Our work as ag-pilots entails a degree of artful talent. Before the days of GPS, that talent was especially true when the ag-pilot could “make a square peg fit in a round hole”, meaning if the farmer told him the field was 50 acres, then a 50-acre load would fit regardless how inaccurate the farmer’s guesswork. GPS changed that “art”.
Not too long ago, I was riding in a car in Brazil driven by a Brazilian friend of mine. Until you have been on a twolane highway in Brazil crowded with big, slow trucks, you may have a hard time understanding the danger in driving there. It is quite unlike anything in the U.S., or any other regimented driving country.
Back then the pilot had the flexibility to “adjust” the swath on the fly, although no changes were made to accommodate the changes to booms and nozzles. Also, the spray valve was used to adjust the spray pressure helping to get the square peg into the round hole. Not any more with flow control, that art is gone, too.
The point of all this is the comment made by my driver, Marcelo. A car had just passed us on a hill, in a curve, going who knows how fast, came upon a truck head-on to split the difference between the passing and the oncoming vehicles. Even my Brazilian friend shook his head to this feat, although it is very common there.
One of the last artful things ag-pilots do in this age of technology is the timing for turning on and off the spray valve. Sure, there are GPS units that can do that for us, following the shape file. But, most pilots rely on their inherent timing, adjusting for ground speed, wind and obstacles that in most cases lay the swath down right where it is supposed to go; well, not always. That is why it is an art and not a science. Every pass, load and job is different when it comes to turning on and off the spray valve. The more artistic ag-pilot (tongue in cheek) does a better job. One day, probably, that art will be gone. Well, the techno-geeks haven’t yet figured out how to “milk” a loaded ag-plane off a short strip. It’ll be a few more years before that happens.

“One should not let one minute be used to take the rest of one’s life,” were the loosely translated words that Marcelo spoke. I’ve often thought about that, how that driver was trying to save what amounted to maybe a minute by risking the rest of his life and others, as well. I’ve thought how that so readily translates to ag-flying. Why do we risk the rest of our life in a basic procedure turn trying to do it only a matter of seconds faster? It doesn’t make sense. I don’t advocate 60-90 second turns, unless conditions dictate it. I don’t believe in 20-second hammerhead turns either. I was as guilty as they come the first few years I had a turbine Thrush. It
could do remarkable things compared to the radial Ag-Cat that I had been flying. It takes discipline and professionalism to restrain yourself when at the controls of such a powerful machine. After I sold my flying service to my competitor, then flew for him another 15 years, I learned a valuable lesson about ag procedure turns. I watched my new boss make his first turn of the day very much like the last one and all those in between. He set an example that I knew to follow. At the end of the day, I was much less tired and had covered as many acres as ever. I’m not sure the difference in 20 seconds and 30-40 seconds turns adds up to much. Have you ever counted the number of turns made during a busy day of flying? Probably not; who has the time? Since not all of those turns would be 20 seconds, assuming the first half of the load wouldn’t allow it, nor during the heat of the day, I propose the time gain would be minimal. 502XP: Signed. Certified. Delivered. With Air Tractor’s recent announcement of Federal Aviation Administration certification of the Air Tractor 502XP, President Jim Hirsch reports deliveries of the XP series aircraft are taking off— and just in time for the upcoming season. The new airplane was introduced at the 2015 National Agricultural Aviation Association Convention last December. “We showcased both the 502XP and its PT6A-140AG engine. They drew a lot of interest from convention attendees,” says Hirsch. Air Tractor dealers began receiving calls from ag operators and pilots after they heard about the airplane’s debut in October at Air Tractor’s launch party. Deliveries of the 502XP have begun. Hirsch reports Air Tractor is ramping up 502XP production to address orders on hand and anticipated demand for the remainder of 2016. Currently, four 502XP aircraft are in the delivery stage, with one going to Lane Aviation for buyer Glinz Ag Aerial in North Dakota;
one headed to Frost Flying, and another to Farm Air. In April, Terry Mundell, of Mundell Enterprises, with Air Tractor dealer Robert and Larry Neal, took delivery of the very first production 502XP.
Hot As A Panhandle Ag pilot and operator Terry Mundell ranches and farms 5,000 acres and runs his aerial spraying business in Rosston, situated on the eastern edge of the Oklahoma panhandle. It’s a region of wide-open spaces and is known for record-setting weather extremes. Temperatures hover around 100° F for a good portion of the summer growing season. Mundell has flown an AT-402B for ten years, working within a fifty-mile radius of his FBO. He puts in an average of 300 hours a year of spraying and Spike work as far south as Canadian, Texas. “We work with alfalfa and little bit of wheat. Pasture is our big thing,” says Mundell.

As the southwestern plains of Texas and Oklahoma extend to the west and north, elevation steadily increases. From Rosston to the west side of the Oklahoma panhandle, elevation increases 3,000 feet. And when the high plains meet high temperatures, Mundell says he could use the extra horsepower of the 502XP. “By 10:00 in the morning we often have density altitudes of 5,000 feet. About a year ago I decided to trade up from my 402 to something with more horsepower. I had heard about the 502XP and talked with Robert Neal (dealer Neal Aircraft).” Neal explained that the 502XP had 187 more horsepower than Mundell’s 402B, and was particularly designed for working in high and hot conditions. Tractor, Mundell traded his 402 last July for the new 502XP. “I hope it’s as good an airplane as I think it’s going to be. I haven’t flown it, and don’t know the torque or RPM settings with that 4-blade prop, but the engine should be a good one, since it already has a proven history on the Cessna Grand Caravan.”
An Aircraft for Every Mission With the addition of the 502XP, Air Tractor now offers four 500-gallon capacity spray planes: the AT-502B, the AT-504 trainer/spray plane, AT-502A and the 502XP. When news of the 502XP was released last year, some wondered if it would unseat one of the other models. Jim Hirsch put those questions to rest: “Rather than reduce our product line, we are adding to our
capability. Each of our 500-gallon models allows us to offer an aircraft that uniquely meets the diverse requirements of operators around the world.” The 502XP has its place in the industry, he notes. For operators like Terry Mundell, the XP provides an extra margin of power that boosts productivity when high density altitude challenges aircraft performance. All of the 502XP’s attributes contribute to faster ferry times, more acres covered in less time, and reduced pilot fatigue on long, hot days.

The 502XP is based upon the AT-502A airframe, which has a taller tail than the AT-502B. It is powered by the new Pratt & Whitney Canada 867 horsepower PT6A-140AG turbine engine and is paired with a 4-blade Hartzell propeller. The combination of the 4-blade propeller with the PT6A-140AG engine that produces 117 more horsepower than the -34AG engine provides substantially more overall thrust, Hirsch reports. “The 502XP performs and flies great with a full 500-gallon load in high and hot conditions. It’s an ag plane that will help pilots finish more acres, in less time and with less effort,” he adds. “The larger fin and rudder, coupled with a rebalanced airframe and additional power, has yielded an airplane with excellent flying qualities. With its slowerspinning 4-blade prop, the 502XP is quieter than a 502B, too.”
Right Airplane, Right Time Climatologists’ forecasting models suggest there will be higher temperatures in the southern United States, particularly in the Southwest. This means more days during the spraying season when high/hot conditions can be a factor. Even in lower elevations, such as in Mississippi delta and Texas rice country, high density altitude can be an issue. According to Pratt & Whitney Canada, their PT6A-140AG turbine engine has 1,075 thermodynamic SHP, which is unmatched for any other engine in its class. Practically speaking, that means the 502XP provides 867 SHP up to 111°F—the highest takeoff and climb capability of any 500-gallon ag airplane on the market. And because the -140 has no warm-up or cool-down requirements,

the 502XP is ready to work as soon as a pilot climbs into the air-conditioned cockpit. “The AT-502B is Air Tractor’s most popular 500-gallon ag plane. It continues to be a solid, reliable and productive airplane for ag operators around the world,” says Hirsch. port wingtip contacted the ground at the bottom, twisting the aircraft to the left and out of the washout towards descending ground but through the airstrip boundary fence in a nose-high attitude. The pilot managed to get airborne after this. Major damage had occurred to the underside of both wings, the port flap, aileron, and underside of the port elevator. The starboard fuel tank was torn back to the main spar and major fuel loss was underway. The pilot managed to land the aircraft safely. He identified a loss of depth perception in the gloomy conditions as the main cause of the accident.
—24/10/2015 08:30am —Raetihi —Collision - terrain —R44 II ELT activation was received by RCCNZ. Enquiries were made with the operator and he advised that helicopter had crashed. The helicopter was conducting spraying operations at the time of the accident. The pilot had completed a turn when the RPM’s dropped. The pilot reported turning left towards wind and a downhill escape route, however there was not enough speed and height to recover the situation and the helicopter got into an unrecoverable power settling condition and struck the ground. The pilot identified two causes of the accident: not maintaining sufficient speed and height in the turn, and not adapting to the variable wind conditions that prevailed.

The purpose of the fourth and final run was to ‘tidy up’ a corner of spray area. On this run the aircraft hit a single power wire. The wire span was approximately 300 feet at its highest point and ran for around 500 metres between poles. The poles and the wire were known to the pilot following a reconnaissance flight prior to the job.

The conditions were calm and clear. The area being sprayed was a sloping hill that sloped down into a steep gully, over which the wire was slung. The spray runs were being conducted downhill. The pilot reported that the spray runs were levelling-out to become the same height as the wire. —30/12/2015 2:00pm —Near Waiuku —Collision/strike - vehicle —Bell 206L-3 While on topdressing operations the helicopter was landed for refuelling next to the loading system. Refuelling was completed. The tractor loader being used to load one-tonne bags into the loading system then moved forward to position the bag over the hopper. As the pilot rolled on throttle the main rotor blade struck the end of the loader, severely damaging both blades. The loader driver was hit with a piece of one of the blades that broke off on impact, the injury required hospitalisation.

MVP50T now available for all Air Tractors® as factory option OLNEY, TX— Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch reports that the aircraft manufacturer received Federal Aviation Administration certification for factory production line installation of the Electronics International MVP50T turboprop engine analyzer in all production Air Tractor aircraft. Going forward, the glass panel engine instrument display will be optional equipment in all models of Air Tractor aircraft. “Today, Air Tractor airplanes are rolling off our production line equipped with the MVP50T,” says Hirsch. The MVP50T system has, in fact, been available since 2012 as an option to analog engine instruments, notes Hirsch. “Just like the trend in general aviation, there has also been a steady increase in the number of ag aircraft operators requesting graphic display of engine and flight instrumentation. We have responded to that.” As an example of those efforts, Hirsch points to the RC Allen RCA2600-3 Digital Horizon, which became standard equipment in all Air Tractor production airplanes in 2015. In addition to providing a pilot a wealth of engine information at a glance on an easy-to-read display, the MVP50T also offers much

Serrana Aviação Agrícola — Competence and tradition in the heart of Brazil by Bill Lavender One of the unique attributes of Brazil, as it relates to agricultural aviation, is the possibility for a large fleet of ag-aircraft. Forty or more years ago, primarily ag-aircraft fleets were made up of the Ipanema. The demand for aerial applications has grown during those years, as has the number of hectares being farmed. This caused some multi-aircraft companies to add larger ag-aircraft to their fleet to accommodate growth.
Serrana Aviaçao Agricola is a Brazilian ag-operation that has experienced this growth. Its expansion includes 14 agaircraft and one Piper Saratoga that is used to help streamline business operations that are spread over five Brazilian states. The ag-fleet consists of three Ipanemas, two AT-401s, three AT402-15s and six AT-502-34s. Serrana was formed in 1997 by Marcus Cezar Balzan. He built Serrana into a large ag-aviation operation in São Gabriel do Oeste Brazil. Marcus was killed in an automobile accident in 2007, passing on the company to his brothers, Claudio, and Claudir Jose Balzan.
Today, with its 14 ag-aircraft, Serrana operates from its home base in Sãn Gabriel do Oeste, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) and also has a base in Luiz Eduardo Magalhaes, Bahia. The company also has operations conducted from multiple states; Maranhão, Piaui and Mato Grosso (MT). During the 2014-2015 season, Serrana treated over 2.3 million acres and expects to exceed 2.4 million acres in the upcoming season. This does not include fire fighting operations. Soybeans are an important crop in both regions. However, there is also a significant amount of corn, cotton and sugarcane treated by Serrana. The Midwest region has two seasons; the larger one is October to February, while a smaller season begins in February and ends in August. September is downtime for the aircraft to be serviced and the pilots to take a break. Herbicides are applied using CP nozzles at three gallons per acre. Insecticides are applied with AU4000 Micronair rotary atomizers with rates ranging from .5 to 1.5 gal/acre. In San Gabriel, because it is so hot by midday, applications usually start at 5 a.m. and end by 9 a.m. In Bahia, the aircraft are able to fly all day long.
Farms in Bahia on average are 10,000 acres. While Claudio, along with his family, are busy managing the company Claudio’s son, Caio, is carrying on the ag-pilot tradition of his uncle, Marcos Cezar Balzan, as a second generation pilot for Serrana. At 21 years old, Caio began its first agricultural flights in October 2014. He flew a few hours in an Ipanema before moving on to the radial powered AT-401. After about a month flying the AT-401, he familiarized himself with the AT402 turbine for a week before moving into the AT-502.
