FROM THE COCKPIT

Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com

Drones - Where’s the Economic Advantage? One of the more often asked questions that I’m approached with goes something like, “How do you believe drones will impact our industry?” I read a lot of digital information concerning drones from news alerts subscriptions to newsletters dedicated to drone use. Admittedly, I’ve never flown a drone and my hands-on experience is naught. However, AgAir Update does own a drone for photography that is used legally for photo work for some articles. None of the above qualifies me to be considered an expert drone commenter, either pro or con for the devices. However, that fact doesn’t prevent me from making observations backed by decades of experience in agricultural aviation. A significant part of the drone industry believes drones are ideal for agricultural aviation applications and for whatever reasons solve perceived issues that don’t exist. Regardless of your particular feelings about drones in agaviation, the mantra “follow the money” should be adhered to. In this case, it is more like, “Where is the economic advantage?” The drone industry has two insurmountable problems that, from what I know, have not been approached effectively by it; drift potential and load/production ability. I have yet to see scientific data that validates a drone can make an even swath application and without drift issues. I know there is current research on-going, but only for one, maybe two, particular drone configurations. How about the different configurations of rotors, for example? This is a two-fold issue in that effective, current drone capabilities require Ultra Low Volume (ULV) applications, which in turn lead to very small droplet sizes to be effective. A 6 | agairupdate.com

ULV applications can actually outperform higher volume applications, if done accurately and correctly. Here’s where the drone may fail a flight test for a swath evaluation. How does six to eight rotors that keep the drone airborne affect the spray pattern? Where is the needed downwash that is easily created from a heavy, fixed wing aircraft or helicopter? It takes a massive air displacement to have the downwash needed for an application’s crop penetration that a drone does not have. Let’s keep this in perspective by stating this discussion relates to current market drones that are economically feasible. Here comes into play the economic advantage, or rather the lack of. Sure, the military and maybe some wellfunded research entities may have a large UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). But, how much does one cost that is as large as even the smaller 400-gallon ag-aircraft, or even the 200-gallon capable ag-aircraft? How much does a fleet of these very large drones cost? Drones believed to “take over” ag-aviation are typically under 55-pounds, or are attempting to receive an FAA waiver for only, relatively, slightly heavier drones when compared to a real ag-aircraft. Now you know the two “elephants in the room” limitations for drones in ag-aviation: drift potential and economic advantage. It is going to be very challenging to overcome the drift potential problem with multi-rotor drones. The helicopter drones probably could mitigate the drift potential. Single-rotor drift data is available. They still face the economic advantage obstacle, of which there is none, considering the initial purchase price and operating costs. Why does the industry need drones for large scale applications, anyway? Ideally, if the drift

potential, label requirements and application efficiency can be met, the lack of capacity can be overcome when the drone is used in very tight and otherwise inaccessible locations by traditional ag-aircraft. These will be very small acreages, which in turn greatly limit the economic advantage. The drone operator should be within line of sight. God forbid a drone loaded with a pesticide go AWOL and crash into a school. Otherwise, drones are not needed in ag-aviation and therefore when there is no market demand, there is no market. Ultimately, a business must make a profit to survive and that should be its focus. Everything else is mute without a profit. Evidently, drone manufacturers don’t understand the logistics of spraying a field. It is challenging enough for our industry to make a near perfect application in a field that requires three or more loads, even with GPS. Imagine hundreds of loads per field, how many batteries and battery chargers would be needed? How many additional people to manage changing out batteries and hooking up load hoses for a few gallons of mix? What about the transportation needed to each application site? It would take a small army to effectively take on a large scale spray job where multiple fields of large acreages are concerned. Maybe technology will advance to the point loading and battery changes will be automated, even for “swarms”. With this editorial, I’m challenging the drone industry to show me scientific data where a multi-rotor drone can make an on-label, accurate application with a crosswind component. Drones typically have rotary atomizers, but even those that don’t, the emitters used all produce ultra-fine droplets that without the additions of crop oil and adjuvants rarely make it to the target site; requiring more capacity. The next player in all this should be the EPA. Our industry and the National Agricultural Aviation Association has worked for countless years mitigating risks, always striving for the very best application for the grower with minimum risks to the public and environment in the safest manner possible. The NAAA is already working very closely with the EPA and has made tremendous progress, the most notable being the EPA’s recognition there is a large potential for off-target application. Technology moves at an astounding pace, so I’m not discounting the future, but should the drone industry meet the requirements of legal and accurate applications without changing the rules, it will then be faced with making the devices economically feasible - the economic advantage.

I came across a comment you made regarding a drone sprayer online today about the impact of drone rotors on spray drift. The article was from late last year; it looked like. Anyway, I’m putting on a seminar in Dayton Ohio that has one of the items for discussion being that exact item and how to get our heads around drift with drone application. The EPA is attending the seminar and I want to get people in the room who have ideas on what may need to be done. I’m attaching the flyer in case you’re interested or if you have colleagues that may have an interest. My goal is to facilitate a discussion with people in all areas of the industry so we have different opinions and concerns and can hear them all in one day. At Dayton, we’re hoping to combine aerodynamics expertise with spray expertise to start figuring out the impacts of drones on spray may have and

how to model/predict it. Let me know if it’s something you think you would be interested in. Thanks Kyle Butz Technical Adviser Spray Analytics Lincolnshire, IL Hello Kyle; Thanks for your email. Yes, I’m very concerned about drones making aerial applications. For drones to be effective, at a minimum there are two basic hurdles they will have to overcome; first the ability to carry more acres per load while maintaining the label’s required minimum application volume and second to apply an effective spray pattern that places droplets within an acceptable droplet spectrum and evenly across a swath width. As far as I know, the above creates a paradox for the drone industry for aerial applications. First, a cost effective drone cannot carry enough product to stay on label. Where has anyone evaluated and published the drone application’s droplets as they relate to a spray pattern with minimum drift? Drone applications that I’m aware of uses rotary atomizers at application volumes that for the vast majority of applications would be off-label, too low. Then, comes into play the effect of multiple rotors with multiple vortexes, lack of aircraft weight for effective downwash, etc. My belief, until shown otherwise, a drone has not demonstrated that it can legally apply an even and effective swath, taking into consideration drift and volume. Be sure to read my editorial in this edition for more about this subject. My primary concern is the aerial application industry of both fixed and rotary wing aircraft have worked very hard to calibrate and accurately make even and effective applications with minimum drift potential while remaining on label. For the drone industry to waltz into our industry and screw it up with drift claims would be unacceptable and undoubtedly will receive a lot of pushback. From all that I read, there has been no discussion of these issues amongst the drone industry; only that drones are the best thing since slice bread. I’ll pass on your info to the NAAA and three key drift analysis companies. If I can be of further assistance, don’t hesitate to contact me. Take care, —Bill

March Celebrates Women In Ag Aviation by Bill Lavender

The month of March honors women in aviation worldwide and this includes those flying in agricultural aviation. Why is that different, being a female ag-pilot? Any ag-pilot knows the job is a physical one that requires serious mental concentration almost every minute in the cockpit. For a woman to fly an ag-plane, it takes all of those traits along with others that men know nothing about! Not that other aviation jobs held by women do not test the physical and mental abilities of any pilot, agricultural aviation holds a very special and unique place in that respect.

AgAir Update has published articles on several women ag-pilots. Regardless of the job’s demands, women fit very well in the cockpit of an ag-plane. This edition of AgAir Update presents a summary of these special women and their careers.

Juliana Torchetti Coppick Possibly the most well-known of active female ag-pilots is Juliana. AgAir Update readers know her through her column, “Volo per Veritas” (Fly for the A 12 | agairupdate.com

Truth), where she writes about her experiences flying ag, not only as a female pilot, but how the industry affects all ag-pilots. She was a pilot for the Brazilian GOL airlines and an aviation cargo company. With an intense desire to fly an ag-plane, she attended and graduated from CAVAG (Brazilian ag-pilot school) in 2013. Afterwards, she found a seat flying an Ipanema. But, Juliana did not stop expanding her career as an ag-pilot. Juliana meet an American ag-pilot, Joe Coppick, who had read her column in AgAir Update. It was only a matter of time before the two were married. What followed was Juliana coming to America to fly ag. In a short time, she found seats in different parts of the U.S. that over time allowed her to fly the turbine Thrush 510G, 510P, 510GR, 660P, Air Tractor AT-402B and AT-502B. She also has logged time in the Pawnee, Ipanema and Ag-Truck. Juliana’s multi-faceted experiences in aviation makes her a good example of what women can

INTERNATIONAL

achieve flying ag. She’s flown ag for eight years of which six were in Brazil and two in the U.S. In addition to professional fulfillment, another fact that makes her very happy is personal fulfillment as a mother and as a wife. The marriage to an experienced ag pilot could not be more perfect, after all, they can talk about agricultural aviation, either at the airport or during dinner.

After extensive training at a Georgia ag-pilot school, Thrush Aircraft’s training facility and close mentoring, KayDee completed her first season in 2019 flying the 510P Thrush. Wisely, she had partnered with Dow Croom, who flew the new 510G and mentored KayDee every step of the way.

The month of March honors women in aviation worldwide and this includes those flying in agricultural aviation. Joelize Franciele Friedrichs

KayDee Mitchell Is it possible for someone to go from zero time to ag-time to ag-operator in less than a year? Ask Kathryn “KayDee” Mitchell! It took her less than a year to not only become an ag-pilot, but also an ag-operator with two turbine powered ag-planes at the age of 21. Like so many young people in college, KayDee was unsure about what she really wanted to do in life. Having grown up on a large cotton farm, KayDee was studying agri-business and knew she wanted a career in ag. During a casual conversation with her Uncle Gary, a 20,000+ acres farmer of soybeans and cotton, he mentioned to KayDee that he needed an airplane that could handle all of his acres. With her interest peaked, KayDee volunteered. The irony, however, is that KayDee had never been in an airplane.

Joelize, known as “Jo”, started her flying career in 2007 at the Carazinho Aero Club in Rio Grande do Sul Brazil. Here, she earned her Private Pilot’s license. Like so many pilots starting out, Jo worked at a Mato Grosso airport cleaning aircraft, pumping fuel and any other duties that would help her pay for the hours needed to earn her Commercial Pilot’s license. Jo was hired to fly copilot for a cargo company. She flew cargo for a little over a year before returning to her first flight school in Carazinho to be a multi-engine instructor. This is where she first discovered agricultural aviation and fell in love with the idea of flying a powerful ag-plane, low over fields with the feeling of freedom that only an ag-plane can offer. After completing CAVAG at Carazinho, she found a seat flying an Ipanema in the state of Goias. After this, she flew Cessna C188s in the south of Brazil, and now is working in Carazinho, including giving instruction at the CAVAG for new ag-pilots. “I came from a farming family. At first, when I was flying over the huge fields of Goias, I was afraid; not of the airplane, but of the huge responsibility of doing a good job. I worked on it and now have great satisfaction when pests have been eliminated, the crop is protected and the farmer is pleased.” Jo is flying her eighth season and is a partner-owner of Agrofly in Carazinho, Rio Grande do Sul. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 13

Laura Lawrence

Laura Lima

When it comes to aviation, it always helps if a parent is your aviation mentor. Canadian ag-pilot Laura Lawrence’s father flew in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a flight instructor in the PC-9. He was a pilot for the Canadian Snowbirds Air Demonstration Squadron. He later became a captain for West Jet. While Laura was growing up, she often flew “right seat” with him. Laura got her chance at an aviation career by working at a local ag-operator’s airport on the ground crew while earning her Commercial Pilot’s license and later flying a C-172 for aerial photography work. She decided to become an ag-pilot and attended Battleford’s Airspray school for her training. She started her first season in a C-188 Ag Wagon in 2017. In 2018, she flew the AT-401 and now has three seasons completed. Laura agrees something that is very common for women flying ag is: Growers arrive at the airstrip and ask her, “Where is the pilot?” And, she replies, “I’m the pilot.” Growers feel a little embarrassed and surprised. They are not used to seeing a woman flying a spray plane. It’s only a matter of time and the surprised faces are replaced with a more natural look, “Hi aviatrix! Are you the pilot spraying my field today?”

Laura Lima is 30 years old, graduating from CAVAG agricultural aviation school, Aero Agricola Santos Dumont in Rio Grande do Sul in 2012. During her training as a private pilot, she had the desire to fly ag. She had 800 hours that including working as a flight instructor, before she started her ag training. Today, she has completed seven seasons in several Brazilian states. Laura considers two things to be major accomplishments since becoming an ag pilot. The first was to learn to fly in the hilly region of Ribeira Valley treating bananas. She flew bananas for two years and says the flying requires a lot of situational awareness and skill because of the hills. Laura’s second major accomplishment in her seven season ag-pilot career is flying the Air Tractor 502 XP. “It is a wonderful aircraft with power to spare, in addition to a lot of comfort and safety factors; a dream of almost every agricultural pilot. Laura believes she is fulfilled with her agricultural aviation dreams, but is always acquiring more and more experience, performing her role as an ag-pilot better every day with more promptness and professionalism.

Female ag-pilots face unique issues during their flying career. In some cases, they have to decide on ingenious ways to overcome the strength needed for the job.

Emily Daniels It is good to come from an aviation family. It is good when your spouse is an ag-pilot, too. However, when a woman grows up as a third generation pilot and marries an ag-pilot, it becomes the perfect combination for being a female ag-

pilot. Such was the case with Emily Daniels after marrying her F-16 / ag-pilot, Austin Daniels. Emily started flying at 14 with her father, who is a retired American Airlines pilot. Several years later, she met her future husband, Austin, at the Flying W Airport in New Jersey. The Daniels family owned Wings Aerial Applicators and the Flying W Airport. It wasn’t long after that postively fateful weekend that Austin and Emily married. The couple moved to Texas and later Arizona for Austin to complete his F-16 training in the Air National Guard. During this time, Emily, as a CFII, taught flying lessons, hauled parachute jumpers and ferried aircraft building flight time. Returning to New Jersey with Austin, Emily started her training for flying ag the same way Austin had done nearly 10 years ago; flying a Pawnee, then moving up to the Weatherly 201B. She completed her second season in 2019. She has also opened a flight school for the off-season called, Chick and Rudder Aviation.

Maria Aparecida dos Santos Maria Aparecida dos Santos was born in Itiquira, a city in the interior of Mato Grosso. She is proud of her state’s wealth and large number of agribusinesses. In 2006, she started her life in aviation with all the difficulties to pay for the hours. Then she did the private pilot course as it was not possible to do all the portfolios at once. So she went to live in the hangar to complete these other portfolios. Maria flew executive aviation for a few years, then moved to Campinas in search of opportunities with airlines, but agricultural aviation kept drawing her to it. In 2011, she completed her first season as ag-pilot. Maria says that the greatest joy for her is the

participation of women in agriculture, feeding the world and believing in their potential in all areas, especially in agribusiness. Furthermore, she says agricultural aviation was one of the best career choices she made within aviation. Like Juliana Coppick, she is married to an agricultural pilot as well.

Marie Joyce B. Gascon Captain Marie Joyce B. Gascon recently became the first Filipino spray pilot. Captain Gascon, a registered nurse, wanted to pursue her love of aviation. She attended a flight school near Davao City, which is in southern Philippines. She wanted an aviation career that suited her lifestyle and that turned out to be ag-aviation. Training under Captain Domenico Rafael C. Venuti, the chief pilot of Davao Aerowurkz Corporation (DAC), she earned her Ag-Cat G164 rating in a dual cockpit Ag-Cat with a P&W R-985 engine. She now flies Ag-Cats for DAC. She is completing her first year flying ag. Established in 2007, DAC has a fleet of 15 aircraft. The company is primarily engaged in providing agricultural aerial spraying services in Mindanao. The primary crop treated is bananas. Female ag-pilots face unique issues during their flying career. In some cases, they have to decide on ingenious ways to overcome the strength needed for the job. If they want to have children, that has to be addressed. But, most importantly, they have to overcome the natural idea that ag-pilots are males. As this article points out, that it not true. There are at least six women that are actively flying ag and are successful at it. There will be more and they will do just as well. They deserve March as their special month of recognition.

Effective Low Applications During a period prior to the fungicide applications in the Republic of Argentina, a group of application companies I usually work with entrusted me with the task of analyzing the minimum liters per hectare can be applied without losing application efficiency? We know the economic result of an aerial application is directly related to the swath, the ferry distance and the liters per hectare applied. It is very interesting to analyze in terms of application efficiency what is the minimum limit with which you can work in low volumes using oil as a carrier. In the beginning of the analysis, it cannot be ignored that the configuration and position of the spray boom is decisive for how many droplets will reach the target. This can be seen in the adjacent graphic. if the vortexes of the wings are loaded, droplets rise and evaporate or drift off target.

In earlier years, this vortex effect was intentionally sought, often due to the vapor phase of some chemicals. Now, we know that if droplets enter the vortexes, most are lost going off target with a very noticeable effect; less droplets find their way to the target with these low volume applications. In the same way, we must also consider what type of boom hanger we are using. Depending on the relative position of the hanger, it will have a drag effect that can be seen in this photo.

A 16 | agairupdate.com

All these aerodynamic effects achieved from an adequate configuration / calibration of the spray equipment are absolutely critical in reducing the flow of application since the coverage can be seriously affected. If we assume that structurally the spraying equipment is in perfect condition and we start analyzing in theoretical terms how many drops are produced according to their size and the liters per hectare, we can arrive at an initial approximation of what is the lower limit without losing efficiency. For this we will apply the volumetric formula:

For example, if we apply five liters of total product per hectare (0.5 gal/ac), we have a droplet spectrum that will equate to 68% of the droplets produced will be 100 microns. We know the theoretical result corresponds to 95 droplets / cm2 should reach the target. So, why do a lot less droplets arrive? How much efficiency are we losing due to small droplets of low average volumetric diameter for applications with an oil carrier? Is it possible to achieve good results with low application volumes? The answer will be directly related to two analytical variables. In theory, the production of drops and their orientation are assured considering the parameters described above. Atmospheric conditions will limit the ➤

stability and permanence of each drop produced. The air mass between the formation of droplets will also have an impact on the outcome. We will analyze both conditions. To analyze the atmosphere, we must know the affects of both temperature and relative humidity; the latter being much more limiting in terms of the longevity of droplets produced. We know lower relative humidity has a higher evaporation rate, causing droplets to have a shorter life. Studies carried out a few years ago determined the lifetime of a droplet of 100 microns (typical diameter of an aerial application) is directly related to atmospheric conditions and the density of the spray mix. However, the tank mix density can only be modified with a suitable adjuvant. The graph shows the evaporation time for 100-micron droplets with different volume concentrations by the addition of adjuvants in a controlled atmosphere. That is to say, the type of evaporation reducing adjuvant, used in aerial applications, is limited because it is initially emulsified as a first step and then the bulk density of the tank mix must be modified to preserve the greatest amount of drops from atmospheric demand, e.g. evaporation. In order to analyze the atmosphere between the droplet forming and the target, it is important to consider the different scenarios that may arise for each treatment. It is not the same to achieve good coverage with little or no crop canopy (fungicides in cereals), since only the flag leaf needs coverage. It is much more complicated to achieve the same coverage with a denser crop canopy (fungicides in soybeans or corn).

(treatment without umbrella biomass

In conclusion: Ultra low volume sprays (5 liters/ ha or 0.5 gl/acre) are perfectly possible and highly efficient (70 drops/cm2), if the following parameters are considered. • Configuration and calibration of the application equipment. • Atmosphere’s % of relative humidity. • Tank mix chemistry, or evaporative reducing capacity. • Analysis of the environmental criteria of the application.

New Zealand’s First Air Tractor 502XP Delivered To Super Air Ltd. The popular Air Tractor 502XP continues its global reach by taking to the skies above New Zealand, thanks to ag operator Super Air Ltd. The popular Air Tractor 502XP continues its global reach by taking to the skies above New Zealand, thanks to ag operator Super Air Ltd. John Elliot, manager of Super Air Ltd. in Hamilton, New Zealand, took possession of the 502XP (SN 502A-3149) in late 2019. Following the addition of variable rate spray equipment, it has joined the company’s fleet of two Air Tractor AT-502Bs. “Already owning two AT-502Bs, we know that in most situations in New Zealand the Air Tractor airplanes can do the job in a tough environment with short, irregularly formed airstrips—the vast majority of which are not paved,” Elliot said. When working in these rugged conditions, responsive, reliable dealer support is vital to keep your plane running. “The Air Tractor product is supported by a great dealer network for parts,” Elliot said. “This sets it apart in an industry where time is money. The Air Tractors work in well with our Cresco airplanes, and Air Tractor’s options on size and configuration allow us to fit the right type and set up of Air Tractors to each regional environment we operate in.” Elliot reports the 500 series aircraft are well suited for the types of aerial application work conducted in New Zealand, which is primarily aerial application of superphosphate, New Zealand’s most widely used pastureland fertilizer. He also notes that the Air Tractor is well equipped from a safety point of view, and the aircraft is well supported by Australian dealer, Field Air. Stepping up to the XP simply means taking something that has proven itself to the next level. “Super Air Ltd. is owned by a large corporation (Ballance Agri-Nutrients Ltd. Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, New Zealand), and safety is paramount to our operations,” Elliot explains. “Having a solid frame around the pilot with the fertilizer positioned forward of the pilot rather than behind all point to a far better outcome for the pilot in the event of an accident.” A 24 | agairupdate.com

Field Air, the authorized Air Tractor dealer for Australasia and Asia-Pacific regions, imported the 502XP into Australia for assembly and initial modifications that include a Transland Wingman system. The airplane was initially registered as VH-XPN for the ferry flight to New Zealand. After its arrival in New Zealand in August 2019, the airplane’s registration was changed to ZK-SXP for its new owner Super Air Ltd. The very first Air Tractor to fly in New Zealand was 25 years ago as a demonstration airplane. It was serial no. 502B-0265 and was flown for a time in the country by Field Air pilot John McDowell during 1994. However, the first Air Tractor to be owned and operated in New Zealand was SN 402B-0990 ZK-SAT. It was delivered in 1995 to Don Hart of Skyfarmers Aviation Ltd. in Ashburton, New Zealand and is currently still owned and operated by Duncan Hart, Don’s son. Air Tractor president, Jim Hirsch says, “We’re thrilled that ag operators around the globe are seeing that the 502XP fits their operation. Since the plane went into production in 2016, we’ve delivered them in the U.S., Canada, South America, Africa, Australia, and now New Zealand.” “Demand for the XP has steadily grown, and by the end of 2019, we had delivered more than 70 of them,” says Hirsch. “We expect demand for the 502XP will be strong again in 2020,” he adds. The 502XP, with its PT6A-140AG engine, boasts 867 horsepower to haul a full load even on the hottest days. It’s a productive balance of an advanced airframe and engine that provides speed, capacity, and productivity in extreme conditions. With the 502XP, operators can finish more acres in less time.

by Alan McCracken Before even thinking about pattern testing your aircraft a series of tests need to be conducted to ensure that all nozzles and valves are working properly. Years ago I attended a spray clinic in Colorado and brought along a piece of equipment I developed for this specific purpose. All the aircraft participating in this spray clinic had leakage problems, the record being one aircraft with over 30 problems with nozzles and check valves. I typically work with around a 100 aircraft a year and very rarely encounter an aircraft that is correctly prepared. Many years ago I had the honor of hiring Professor Larry Roth to accompany me on a tour in Argentina and Brazil with the first WRK computer system using a strip of paper. During the first test in Argentina, it was painfully clear that the smaller droplets did not deposit on the horizontal surface of the paper. This was due to the double effect of the flat surface of the paper combined with airflow that caused smaller droplets to pass over the test paper. The total number of droplets collected never exceeded 20 drops/cm². On observing the results, Professor Roth was surprised that his system did not work. He quickly understood why. I positioned water sensitive cards at a 45° angle on a wire coat hanger. These cards collected the complete spectrum of droplets with

over 100 droplets/cm² at the same spray volume of 5 lts/ha (0.5 gal/ac). Larry and I later became lifetime friends. I presented the results at an NAAA meeting and was advised this method does not follow ASABE standards! Many technical people still do not accept this reality. In my opinion, the whole concept of pattern testing needs to be updated. It has been the same for essentially 40 years, conducting tests flying into the wind using water and dyes, first with paper and now with string. The system serves only as a first step to having a rough idea of the effective swath width. On a number of occasions, I have been invited to adjust aircraft that had been approved by a spray clinic test, but the chemical application did not control the pests. The most effective and true evaluation of swath can be made by applying a herbicide to dessicate a pasture. Observe the adjacent page photo showing how the effective swath varies depending on flying height. Most pilots know aerial applications should only be conducted with a crosswind of at least a 30° angle. The next step in the analysis process is to make a minimum of three swaths, preferably four swaths, using a crosswind to determine the true effective swath. In this instance, it’s important to note the effective swath width is wider when racetrack flying than with back-to-back swaths.

INTERNATIONAL

This is logical when we consider the propeller’s torque effect that throws the pattern from the right wing to the left with the exception of some TPE331 turbines and Pezetel radial engines.

Procedure in calibrating an aircraft: Connect the ground loading pump to the spray boom using a hose with a quick disconnect coupling connected to the center boom underneath the fuselage to pressurize the system. Some operators connect at the end of the boom. However, there will be a pressure drop across the boom and hence lower nozzle flow rates at the opposite end of the boom. Visually inspect all nozzles or atomizers. For rotary atomizers, be sure they rotate freely with no visible problems and have intact screens with all blades at the same angle. Ensure that a return air bleed tube is fitted to the end of the boom to eliminate air blockage that will pressurize the boom after closing the spray valve causing nozzles to stream. Install a pressure gauge near the end of the boom to monitor pressure and compare with the aircraft’s boom pressure gauge. Prime the system. Open and close the spray valve to check that all nozzles open and close instantly. It is critical to adjust

all nozzle types: for CP03 and CP09, by tightening the central screw to prevent leakage between the nozzle components. Operate the pump with a pressure of at least 25 lbs/in² and check the flow rates per nozzle, or atomizer. If the difference exceeds 10%, it is necessary to check and clean valves and orifices, or if excessive, replace orifices. The next step is to monitor a typical spray mixture being applied on the field. Place water sensitive cards, mirrors (the better choice) or black glass crossing the line of flight and observe the droplets collected. In addition, observe the life of the droplets by timing how many minutes to dry. The droplets must remain wet for a minimum of 2-5 minutes. This provides confirmation that the product has arrived and was not lost due to evaporation after leaving the aircraft. The best method is to use small mirrors to collect and to observe the “life” of the spray drops. Note temperature, humidity and tank mix, as this will affect drying time. Experience has proven all products perform better when there is a delay in drying. This is especially true for a “knockdown” effect using insecticides and with SC formulations (Suspension Concentrate). If applied with oil, ➤

Top Left: Here the aircraft’s boom has a pressure relief system by plumbing a line from its end into the last nozzle. Notice that the outlet (gray nozzle of the three-colored nozzles pointed straight down) is on the front, this results in a very uneven droplet spectrum since drops splash off the central screw. The nozzle body needs to be turned through 180 degrees such that the gray nozzle is on the rear side. Transland offers a similar boom system, except with an internal bleed back tube. Center Left: Check that all nozzles are producing the same pattern; very rarely is this the case. Bottom Left: CPllTT nozzles need to be installed such that the operating nozzle is on the rear and top of the assembly, as shown in photo attached. If installed and angled down, larger droplets are formed on the central screw. Observe outlet nozzle on top and not underneath.

droplets dry within seconds and leave a dust particle on leaves. This is a major reason why low volume applications of fungicides are more effective in controlling soybean rust than other volume levels. On numerous occasions, I have witnessed excellent deposition on collectors with zero control of pests/diseases. I have also witnessed the opposite with nothing on the cards and 100% control of the target pest. Dr. Scott Brethaur presented results at the NAAA a few years ago confirming this effect. Why mirrors? Many highly concentrated chemical solutions containing 3-8 products without water that are applied in South America do not mark water sensitive cards for the very simple reason the cards are “water sensitive”. Also, mirrors may be photographed for the record, then easily cleaned for a repeat test.

Having worked for four multinational chemical companies worldwide on the development of new products, I regret to inform that very few conduct field trials with aircraft to develop a label recommendation. The standard method is to conduct small plot tests using a CO² sprayer and then extrapolate the numbers for aerial application. The labels are prepared in the office comparing existing labels and then “copy and paste” to prepare the new label! If a certain text was accepted once by the EPA, it most likely will be accepted for another label. If a new text is presented, the EPA will be almost certain to demand clarification. The reason is very simple, as quoted below in requirements stipulated by the EPA.

“Manufacturers of conventional pesticides must obtain Experimental Use Permits (EUPs) before testing new pesticides or new uses of pesticides, if they conduct experimental field tests on 10 acres or more of land or one acre or more of water. Biopesticides also require EUPs when used in experimental settings.” I would greatly appreciate input from any pilot of a turbine powered aircraft flying at 220 ft/ second with an 80-foot swath (2.5 acres a second) who can spray a trial plot with a minimum of five swaths and not cover more than 10 acres! Many experts insist the operator should follow the label on the premise that, if not followed and the product does not work, the chemical company will not accept liability. The problem of Asian Rust is a case in point. At the outbreak of this disease, all experts insisted on following the label and also on using high volumes of water (30-50 lts/ha - 3-5 gal/ac) for good coverage! This is false. The only method that effectively controls the disease is by using smaller droplets at a low volume application of 5 – 10 lts/ha (one half to one gal/ac) with the addition of oil to control evaporation. Another clear example is the control of spider mites. Many labels specify high volumes of 50-80 lts/ha (5-8 gal/ac) and yet the most effective method is with low volumes of 3-8 lts/ha (0.3- 0.8 gal/ac) using crop oils as an additive. In my opinion, the ag aviation industry needs to demand tests be conducted by the chemical companies that determine the most effective method for aerial applications and stop repeating methods that don’t work. Paraphrasing Albert Einstein, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

HANDS ON FLYING

Tracy Thurman thurmantracyt@gmail.com

Risky Business “Isn’t that dangerous?” the man with tassels on his shoes asked. I shrugged and replied with the answer I usually provide to that particular question, “The most dangerous part of any flying job is just driving to the airport.” The man looked at me and shook his head. “It seems like it ought to be against the law, flying a plane like that. I would never do something like that.” The little voice inside my head whispered the reply, “No… I don’t guess you would.” He went on to ask about the chemicals we use and the “fact” that if anyone came within ten yards of Round Up at any time in their lives, they would certainly develop cancer and some of their secondary organs would likely explode. Surely, I had seen the commercials on TV. “You ever dump Round Up on anything?” he asked. “No sir, I’ve never dumped Round Up on anything, I’ve sprayed a lot of it, though.” He rolled his eyes. “You guys dump tons of chemicals on everything, then act like it’s no big deal.” At that point, I paused in the conversation. My knuckles were feeling like they needed to be cracked and my neck was getting stiff. “We consider it a mighty big deal actually. We’re very cautious with what we do,” I replied. The man made one of those ‘hmmppff’ sounds and rolled his eyes again. (I hate that.) “I don’t think you guys know what caution is or you wouldn’t be doing what you do. I’ve seen you crop dusters fly your planes. I’m not a pilot, but I know it’s not necessary to fly like that.” There comes a point in any discussion when you have to accept the fact you’re talking to a person who likely believes Reality TV is actually reality. I disengaged with a polite nod, wished the man well and walked away. Whew! We now live in a society of fear. Fear of scraping an elbow or stubbing a toe. Everything is guarded, marked off, warned about, cautioned over, bubble

wrapped, frowned upon, or against the law. We live in a society that is being overprotected and downright sissified. People are now hard wired to automatically default to the “Flee” instinct. That’s disturbing. I am certainly not saying anything against safety rules or maintaining a good safe working and living condition. Heaven knows we need a good set of safe and sane parameters as much as anyone. However, there is a point where the guardrail just gets in the way. There still has to be some common sense and personal responsibility applied.

He went on to ask about the chemicals we use and the “fact” that if anyone came within ten yards of Round Up at any time in their lives, they would certainly develop cancer and some of their secondary organs would likely explode. We live and work in an inherently dangerous environment. We chose it, we worked hard to get into it and for the most part, there’s nothing else we’d rather do. We spend a lot of time and discussion on risk management. It’s one of the most important things we do in our job. In order to manage or mitigate risks we are subject to, we have to identify and in most cases,

accept those risks as necessary for the completion of the job. The difference is, we study and train to manage those risks in a safe manner. Note, we manage risks, not avoid, or believe we can remove them. It’s part of the job and part of life. We know our limitations and those of the aircraft we fly. We know our environment and we know our own capabilities. We also know there are times when a guy has to push himself a little past his comfort zone in order to learn those things and to hone his skills. If a blade never sees a stone, it won’t be able to perform the task it was designed for. I’m certainly not advocating here throwing caution to the wind. I’m addressing the fact that sometimes we might become too unwilling to push the envelope when we should. For example, there are times when it’s better to go under wires than to pull up over them. We sometimes have to make those decisions on the fly, no pun intended. We’ve all done stupid things in airplanes. If you can say you haven’t, then you’re either a very low time pilot, or you’re lying. No, we don’t fly haphazardly. If conditions exceed the limits, we wait until they don’t. We don’t ignore regulations and we darn sure do not fly or dispense pesticides in any way that would violate the law or present a hazard to anyone. Ag pilots more often than not accept greater risks to themselves in order to mitigate any risk to others, property or livestock. If you live your life without risk, if you exist in the shaded, well-worn center of the path, you’ll miss the opportunity to dare, the chance of the challenge and you’ll stay where you are, unblemished. You will never have felt the burning of the sun or the elation of true freedom. Our society has become one obsessed with safety. Obsessed with avoiding risk of any kind. Thankfully, men and women who existed before us knew to excel and to exceed required risks and often times sacrifice. Otherwise, we would forever be earth-bound, dull and slow witted. Not to mention incredibly boring. What would those pioneers think of the world today? Yes Mr. Tassels, we know it’s dangerous. Perhaps, someday there will be a law against it. If people like you continue to gain influence and control, there very well could be. Until then, I think the rest of us will roll up our sleeves and press on. There’s still a lot of hard work to be done. We’ll get some scrapes, scars and bumps along the way. That’s okay. I’d rather have those than tassels on my shoes. Those who can’t do, should not question those who do. Fly Well and Stay Safe!

Spider X Spidertracks Next-Generation Spider Hardware Spidertracks, a leading provider of satellitebased real-time flight tracking, active flight following and communication solutions, today announced the launch of the Spider X - their nextgeneration Spider hardware. It wasn’t much more than a decade ago when aircraft tracking was feasible only for the top tier of the industry. Innovation in the sector typically followed a traditional pathway of heavy boxes that required integration into aircraft systems, and the cost and complexity of these precluded mainstream adoption. Spidertracks came to market with fresh thinking and a delightfully simple product philosophy that broke down these barriers and revolutionised the sector. Today aircraft tracking has industry-wide adoption the benefits of increased safety and operational efficiencies have seen Spidertracks become the de facto standard. Ten years on, Spidertracks took this to a whole new level with the release of Virtual FDR™ - an adaptive sampling algorithm on the Spider that provides an accurate, high-resolution representation of an aircraft’s actual flight path and movements in (near) real-time. As a trusted provider of aviation safety services, Spidertracks utilise a dedicated Iridium channel for all missioncritical data. This gives the customer assurance of receiving high-quality data, on-time everytime, without reliance on cellular availability or retrieving an SD card. And now, they have done it again with the release of the Spider X. Spider X expands on the power of Virtual FDR™ with the introduction of an attitude and heading reference system. AHRS data is transmitted over the air, allowing simple A 32 | agairupdate.com

and easy access to information about the aircraft’s orientation and position. The innovative piece of hardware developed by the Spidertracks team based in New Zealand is packed with forwardthinking tech such as WiFi, cellular, Bluetooth, USB-C, and serial port interface capability, to provide the ideal development and integration platform. Building on the advanced functionality of its predecessors, the Spider X will make flight data monitoring (FDM) accessible for the general aviation industry as a simple, easy to install, lightweight, and affordable solution. “I am really proud of what the team has delivered with the SpiderX. The look, feel, and design concepts reflect 13 years of aviation DNA and learnings, and future-proofs our customers to meet their ever-evolving requirements,” notes Dave Blackwell, CEO of Spidertracks. Spidertracks are carving out a unique opportunity for a digital transformation within a traditionally analogue industry. Building on their reputation of continually challenging the status quo and solving the problems that the industry faces, they look to redefine the way you access and receive data from the aircraft to deliver more usable insights and better understanding. Thousands of aircraft owners and operators around the world choose Spidertracks, who continue to push boundaries, lead the way towards safer practices, and help support more efficient operations. They are breaking down the barriers of traditional flight data recording through digitising the analogue, and unlocking significant value for customers to better operate, analyse, and optimise their business processes.
