Gender Revealed

It would be good if every agpilot practiced an emergency dump.

Normally, I wouldn’t… but, I simply could not let it go. By now, I venture to say almost every ag pilot has either read or heard about the gender reveal that went wrong and nearly killed two people. I’m referring to the AT-602 that was reported to have been loaded with 350 gallons of pink colored water and dumped the load to “reveal” the gender of a yet to be born child. The parents are lucky to not be attending a double funeral before the birth.

A load of 350 gallons would seem to be prudent for an emergency dump exercise. Actually, it would be good if every ag-pilot practiced an emergency dump. Starting with 350 gallons would be reasonable for a 602; at altitude and without a passenger.

Probably, every one of us has done stupid things in an ag-plane. That doesn’t make it right. I have to admit that I took my two-year old son for a ride in my turbine Thrush. That was in 1980, before PAASS and before an awareness that has taken place within our industry that simply forbids such stupidity. I look back today and can hardly believe I really did that, something I would not even consider today.

All I know about this event is what I have read.

I have not spoken to the pilot, or anyone directly related to the incident. I take caution with what I write, as I am most certainly not a judge and jury.

I did see a photo of the aircraft. I’ve seen many damaged ag-planes over the decades and even crawled out of a couple. I find it incredible that anyone survived the crash of this aircraft, much less the survival of two people that were in a

cockpit designed for only one passenger.

The point of this editorial is not to drag the pilot through the mud of criticism. I doubt I could add any more to what has already been given amongst circles of ag-pilot discussions, not to mention the national media. I’m sure the pilot’s description of the accident to the FAA was an interesting one. The message I hope to deliver is for everyone to understand the setback this has caused the industry. Sure, we’ll survive it and this unfortunate crash will become a faded memory. In the meantime, the event reflects in a very negative way toward our industry. Every major news media picked up the article and published it.

Fortunately, the pilot lived through this and maybe his flying will become more safety oriented.

The kicker here is not so much the gender reveal water dump, but the fault for having a passenger on board. And, the inability to conduct an emergency dump without crashing the aircraft in the process.

As the PAASS mantra says, “Upon the performance of each, rests the fate of all.” Let’s use these ag-planes for the purposes they were designed. Always ask yourself, “If I step out of the design envelope are the potential consequences worth it?”

Wright Bros Master Pilot Award Just wanted you to know. Denny O’Hara received the Wright Bros Master Pilot Award during a ceremony in Amarillo this past week. You did an article on Denny in 2011. Working in USA I am trying to find out what is required to obtain a FAA Agricultural Pilot Rating. I currently hold an Australian CASA APTL with Multi IFR and Agricultural ratings and have over 3000 hrs agricultural and fire experience and 9500 hrs total time. With the drought in Australia, I am considering looking for agricultural work in the USA. Marcus Hucker Australia Marcus; Good Morning. The US does not have an “FAA Agricultural Pilot Rating”. You can fly as an aerial applicator with an FAA Commerical Pilot’s License..

You would need to get an FAA Part 137 sign-off in your logbook, but that is very simple.

Successful 2019 Ag Aviation Expo Brings Ag Aviation to Orlando

The 2019 Ag Aviation Expo was held in Orlando, Florida November 1821, 2019. This year’s convention, opened by 2019 NAAA President Perry Hofer, was held earlier than in the traditional first of December and proved to be a great location for the 1,626 attendees and 151 exhibitors. The following short articles are a summary of news and events during the very busy week in the Sunshine State.

AssuredPartners Aerospace Announces the Addition of Two Ag Aviation Insurance Professionals AssuredPartners Aerospace is pleased to announce the addition of two aviation insurance professionals in the Midwest and Southeast United States.

Doug Bontrager has joined as an Aviation Insurance Sales Executive. Based out of Indiana, Bontrager will focus on providing knowledgeable representation to aerial applicators and other commercial aviation businesses. He brings ten years of experience as an aerial application pilot and has nearly 5,000 hours flying ag aircraft. In addition, Bontrager was the recipient of the 2016 NAAA Robert Horne Memorial Safety Award and is an experienced insurance agent, giving him a unique advantage that few insurance brokers can offer.

Kris Parsons has also joined as an Aviation Insurance Sales Executive. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Parsons gained extensive knowledge having previously worked as an aviation insurance underwriter for insurance companies and offers

more than 19 years of experience including coverages for aerial applicators. In addition, he served as an Avionics Technician in the U.S. Marines and three years with the USAF Reserve as a Flight Engineer. Parsons holds a Commercial Pilot Certificate with Multi-Engine and Instrument Ratings and is a Certified Flight Instructor.

“Doug and Kris both bring practical experience along with insurance knowledge adding to our capabilities and depth,” commented Jon Downey, AssuredPartners Aerospace President, “I am excited to welcome them to our aviation team of specialists.”

Isolair Shows New Spray System at 2019 Ag Aviation Expo Isolair is pleased this year to have shown a newly built Bell Huey with the new 3900-205/ UH1 Spray System. Isolair has gotten one-off STC approval and paperwork is going to the FAA very soon for the multiple STC Approval. Isolair has also been very busy with many new H-125 systems both wet and dry for mosquito control and spraying in China. The updated STC for the H-125 is into the FAA, the new tank is 185 gallons, up from 165 gallons. Isolair is also getting back on the STC for the Bell Long Ranger, Isolair 3900-206L Spray System. Isolair is pushing ahead with the new 3900-505 Spray System 185-gallon tank with forward mount booms. They have completed test fitting and have the design done.

Need to make a few minor changes, then start flight testing. The Bell 505 is proving to be a good working utility machine taking the place of the Jet Ranger with a competitive price.

What’s New at AG-NAV? What is Ag-Mission?

This is the latest web application designed by AG-NAV Inc., for pilots, office staff, clients, suppliers, inspectors, ground personnel, GIS personnel and any one who needs to make work orders for aerial application. Ag-Mission will do what it says, “Make a Mission for AG work”.

The web application allows you to generate a full work order including product description, application rate, swath width, spray polygons, exclusion zones, buffer zones, flight lines, obstacle view and new entries, aircraft and ground crew tracking, application reports, and much more; so you can load the work order to your Ag-Nav systems or others that take the SHP file format.

Meet Air Tractor’s New Training Manager At Ag Aviation Expo Brian Hahn, Air Tractor’s Director of Training. was at the Air Tractor exhibit at the 2019 Ag Aviation Expo in Orlando, FL to provide information about the company’s new Air Tractor Maintenance Familiarization Course.

The course is designed to familiarize maintenance technicians with Air Tractor airframe characteristics, structures, flight controls and systems, as well as the interface between the P&WC PT6A powerplant, Hartzell propeller and Air Tractor airframe. There is some hands-on time for processes that are commonly performed on Air Tractor aircraft.

The familiarization courses allow attendees to address specific challenges that they may have encountered and allows much one-on-one interaction with instructors.

Hahn reports there are still a few seats available for the next Air Tractor Familiarization class, scheduled for December 9-13, 2019. More classes are scheduled through 2020.

Air Tractor hosts the courses at their headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Olney, Texas. Hahn says that classes can also be conducted at customer facilities upon request. “Sometimes it makes better sense economically for an instructor to go to the customer instead of making customers come to Olney,” Hahn said. “We will go where we’re needed.”

Air Tractor Brings AT-402B To NAAA Ag Aviation Expo in Orlando

Air Tractor displayed an AT-402B with some of the latest equipment updates for 2020 production models. Air Tractor dealer Farm Air, Inc. facilitated the sale to its new owner.

Serial number 402B-1428 was purchased by Jim Jones of Sutton, Nebraska. The airplane has been equipped with MVP50T engine instrumentation, an Air Tractor custom avionics package, LED nose and position lights and Air Tractor’s SureLock tailwheel lock, which was introduced last year at the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo. Air Tractor Customized Club Car Up for Auction at NAAA Ag Aviation Expo In addition to the Air Tractor AT402B that was on display at the National Agricultural Aviation Association Ag Aviation Expo, another sleek yellow and blue vehicle garnered close inspection at the Air Tractor exhibit. GE Aviation announced at the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) Ag Aviation Expo in Orlando that it has expanded the scope of TAE Aerospace within its Authorized Service Center network to support GE’s H-Series and M601 turboprop engines in North and South America.

In 2012, Australia-based TAE Aerospace became a Designated Repair Center supporting H-Series and M601 engines for the Asia Pacific region. The companies recently expanded their existing agreement to include heavy repair options in North and South America beginning in 2020.

This new agreement gives TAE Aerospace authorization to perform line maintenance inspections and routine installed engine maintenance, removal and replacement of engines and engine components and heavy repairs for GE’s H-Series and M601 engines. GE will provide the necessary OEM parts to meet TAE’s needs.

TAE has steadily built its presence in the United States with the acquisition of Copperstate Turbine Engine Company based in Phoenix in February. In August, they acquired Ag Air Turbines, based in Midvale, Idaho. “TAE is a valuable member of our turboprop service network and has contributed to our customers’ growth and success in the Asia-Pacific region,” said GE’s president and CEO of Czech Republic Milan Slapak.

Captain Marie Joyce B. Gascon recently became the first Filipina spray pilot in the male dominated agricultural spray industry.

Capt. Gascon, who hails from Cotabato City, is a registered nurse by profession. She further earned educational units in the United Kingdom for a few years, but returned to the Philippines to help her parents manage their family business.

She also wanted to pursue her dream to fly.

Hence, she studied and earned a commercial pilot’s license at St. Alexius College and Flight School near Davao City. However, she realized that she wanted a career in aviation that would suit her lifestyle. Agricultureal aviation seemed to be the perfect fit. So, she decided to pursue an G164 Ag-Cat rating which would allow her to fly Ag-Cats. She trained under Captain Domenico Rafael C. Venuti, the chief pilot of Davao Aerowurkz Corporation (DAC).

Capt. Venuti earned his aviation ratings in the United States and attended Wayne Handley’s

aerobatics training course in California.

Handley’s course was taught in an Extra 300. It is tailored expecially for ag-pilots, helping them to understand how an aircraft maneuvers close to the ground in nearly aerobatic style.

Davao Aerowurkz Corporation, the company responsible for the build-up of skilled pilots in the Philippines, was established in 2007 and accredited by ISO 9001:2008. The company has a fleet of 15 aircraft. DAC is primarily engaged in providing agricultural aerial spraying in Mindanao. The primary crop treated is bananas, helping Filipina banana exporters produced world class bananas. Not only does DAC cater to the needs of farm owners, but also offers several other services, such as office and hangar rentals, helicopters and planes charter and medical evacuation.

Super Spreading with a Beaver

When working Beavers, we worked on a swath of approximately one chain (22 yards) using granulated super phosphate fertilizer at a rate of one cwt/ac. A 1-ton load (2,240 lbs) ran for approximately 2.5 miles.

When growers used fortified or double strength super, the application rates dropped to 56 lbs/ac.

That meant a 1-ton load ran for approximately five miles.

This required many more swath runs, more procedural turns, more landmarks to use as markers in each sortie (before GPS) and each sortie took much longer, thereby slowing down the hourly output rates.

As you were paid by retainer and tonnage output bonus, taking longer to spread one ton at half the application rate involved more flying for less tonnage output. A reduced output of two ton/ hr flown soon mounted up as lost bonus payment income each day, month and year.

Operational Phases â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Three-Swath Runs Phase 1

with three procedural high G-force turns would take approximately 7.25 minutes and equate to an output rate of approximately eight loads/hour (i.e., 17,920 lb/hour (8,000 kg/h)) and cover 160 ac/h (64 ha/h). The mental plan, methodology and calculated timing of each of the 11 flight phases and coverage of such a treatment area for one load would look something like the figure 1 below.

If however, without the second and third procedural turns and the short swath run of 0.5 miles (0.8 km), Phases 7, 8 and 9 could be avoided. Then, the aircraft would be heading back to the airstrip after the second swath run with an empty hopper after Phase 6. The mental plan, methodology, timing of each flight phase and coverage of such a treatment area for one load in this scenario would become more productive and increase the output to approximately 10 loads / hour (22,400 lb/hour (10,000 kg /h)) and look like the figure 2 below.

being infinitely adjustable and manually controlled with the spreading lever, the application rate and swath run could be varied within practical limits to ensure even coverage with the minimum number of turns away from the airstrip. There was a graduated scale mounted on top of the instrument panel so the actual hopper opening selected could be seen instantly without looking down anywhere else in the cockpit.

A ‘spreading mirror’ was positioned on the port wing strut of the Beaver and adjusted so that the pilot could see either the hopper outlet or the tailwheel assembly to monitor even product flow into the air-stream or check for blockages in the product flow.

Therefore, calculating the most efficient operational pattern to fly presented many variables, all focused on achieving the best output rates per hour in the safest manner. Either adjusting the load, the swath width (to closer spacing than 66 ft (20 m)), or the application rate proportional to the swath width and length of swath run, all needed careful considerations. While it was possible to fly closer swath runs at lower application rates to get overlapped swath patterns, the converse was not possible as it would lead to strips of land with heavy fertilizer coverage and other strips without fertilizer. If it was not obvious on the day, it surely soon would become obvious to all landowners and other pilots when the greenest pasture growth appeared in green stripes known as ‘striping’.
