Morning Doug; I hate that the Wx was what it was while visiting with you. After seeing all that Sandy and I saw, remember, when I was with you I had not seen the Alaskan mountains due to the low ceilings, I wish we could have gone flying. It would have been a blast and maybe there will be another opportunity. If so, I sure won’t plan the “tourist” thing.

Most of the time, when I travel around the world, I am solo and usually shown around by a reader. So, I avoid all the tourist traps and see the best places of where I am. The Alyeska Resort and the Alaskan Railroad train ride were very nice and the right thing to do with my wife along. However, hanging with you a few days would have been the greatest. Being a “traveler” with the locals is far better than being a tourist.

As for “Dust Up”, the video trailers speak for themselves. The “stars” of the show are pretty irresponsible and a shame to the industry. Enough said...

Public attitude about ag-aviation and its unfounded fears of it; competing ground machines and of course, operating costs.

7. What is the future for this industry in the world?

Presently, very good, at least until someone finds a substitute for aerial

spraying of corn and soybeans used for ethanol production. However, as the world population continues to expand and more undeveloped countries become more developed, the demand for food stuffs will increase exponentially. The only way to meet the demand, at least in the near future, is high yield agriculture and that requires aerial applications.

One to remember The 2011 fire season is starting to wind down and it will be one that will be remembered for several different reasons. Depending on what part of the country you were in, it could be looked upon as a very active or a very slow season with strange turns all along the way.

Not long after the new SEAT (Single Engine Air Tanker) contracts were awarded earlier in the year, the Variable Term contracts were cancelled. This happened because of several lawsuits that were filed over the method used to select contractors.

The lawsuits have not reached the courts yet, but hopefully the outcome will result in a more fair and balanced contracting method. With no Variable Term SEATs, the entire fleet was On Call. In some parts of the country this resulted in aircraft being called up for a fire and then being released as soon as the fire was out. This is not good business for contractors and flight crews.

In March and April, huge wildfires raged out of control in northern parts of Mexico. The area they were in was very remote, rugged and of ecological importance. Smoke from these fires was impacting parts of the southern United States. The Mexican

government appealed to the American and Canadian officials for help in battling the blazes. An aerial assault was the only option. Ultimately, three SEATs, three heavy helitankers, three military MAFFS units, and Evergreen’s B-747 tanker were sent from the U.S., while Canada provided the Martin Mars heavy water bomber. Although hundreds of missions were flown, in the end it was Mother Nature that ended the inferno with monsoonal rainfall.

In April, everyone in the aerial firefighting business was shocked to hear that Aero Union’s fleet of eight Lockheed P-3 heavy air tankers had been grounded. There was no reason or explanation given, rumors were that it was a contract dispute, even the Aero Union flight crews did not have a clue. This was the backbone of the heavy air tanker fleet. After about a week, six of the aircraft were back in service and everything was thought to be OK. Then in late June word went out that the United States Forest Service had cancelled Aero Union’s contract. All along it had been about a dispute with the Federal Aviation Administration over a mandated safety program that Aero Union had not followed. Hopefully, in the future the

company will be back on the flight line.

Three states suffered their largest wildfires in history this year. Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas all set records for acres burned in one fire. There is no real reason for this other than they were all wind driven into heavy fuels.

Texas has been hit especially hard this year with over seventy percent of the acres burned in the nation being in the Lone Star State. I have been on duty here in Texas for over six months and there is no end in sight.

The national SEAT program has a

new manager. Glenn Claypool has done an outstanding job of overseeing the busy operations this summer. I know that everybody in the field is excited about having Glenn on board and we all look forward to working with him. The manager he replaced went to work for a vendor soon after his retirement.

I hope everyone has had a safe and prosperous season and maybe I will see you in the mountains some day.

Reclaiming the last frontier - Glenn Air’s ag operation in Alaska

by Bill Lavender What does a Part 137 ag operator do when it is -40°F outside the hangar? Not much, especially anything related to agaviation. However, it is not always that cold in Alaska. Interior-located Fairbanks has reported a record temperature of 99°F (but also a record low of -66°F).

From a very unlikely place to operate an ag-plane, Part 137 operator Glenn Air, has used its 1998 TPE-331-6 powered Thrush to meet the needs of Alaskans since 1988. President and Chief Pilot,

Doug Glenn owns the only Part 137 operation in Alaska. Based in Palmer, about 30 miles north of Anchorage, Glenn Air serves a corridor of the state that runs from Kodiak Island in the south to about 500 miles north to Fairbanks’ mining area.

What does a Part 137 operator do in Alaska? With Alaska’s extreme cold temperatures, most of the work is done between May and August, a very short season that Doug manages to fly his Thrush about 250-300 hours.

Glenn Air’s Turbo Thrush spreads fertilizer over land that has been reclaimed from closed open pit mining operations. Earlier, Glenn Air spread seed on the newly placed topsoil by its sister company, Northern Reclamation Services.

Approximately 35-40% of Glenn Air’s flight hours are for coal, gold and silver mine reclamation work. When an open pit mine project is completed, it is necessary to “reclaim” the land that was mined. This is done by back filling, bulldozing and aerially seeding and fertilizing the ground.

Glenn Air had been providing aerial services for reclamation work through various reclamation companies. Doug explains, “[When] we needed some

ground preparation work done by a reclamation service, our mining customer suggested Glenn Air do all of it. We were already doing the aerial part. so it was a door that opened for us to get involved with the ground side of reclamation. This has turned out to be a natural fit for Glenn Air.” In 2007, Glenn Air formed Northern Reclamation Services. Two of its largest customers are the Usibelli Coal Mine and Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. The

Usibelli Coal Mine is the only operational coal mine in Alaska with an output of 1.5 million tons of coal a year. Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. owns the open-pit Fort Knox mine. This mine produces nearly 350,000 ounces of gold annually. At today’s gold price, that is over $500 million USD. On one reclamation job last year, Northern Reclamation Services hauled and prepped over 275,000 yards of top soil. Then, Glenn Air completed the job by seeding and fertilizing with its Thrush. The Alaskan Department of Natural Resources formulates the blend of blue grass, rye, clover and other ground covers. Glenn Air and Northern Reclamation Services work hand in hand to give mining companies a one-stop, complete reclamation service.

Northern Reclamation Services also manufactures straw wattles. These are long tube-like “bags” that are filled with wheat straw and aid in controlling erosion at a reclamation site. “We were importing the wattles from the lower 48, when I decided to invest in a wattle machine here in Palmer. This allowed us to lower our wattle costs because we avoided shipping costs and are using Alaskan wheat straw to make the wattles ourselves. It gives our employees something to do when it is -40°F,” chuckles Doug.

Glenn Air has been on standby for CISPRI, a conglomerate of oil companies, since 1990 as a first responder for oil spills in the Cook Inlet. In addition, the company seeds the Trans-Alaska Pipeline that consists of 800 miles of 48-inch crude oil pipe from northern Prudhoe Bay south to Valdez at Prince William Sound.

makes up about 25% of Glenn Air’s work. During the last 23 years, Doug has spread over 2.2 billion salmon into Alaskan lakes with his Thrush. Typically, a “load” of salmon is a counted million fish. The “fry’ come from local hatcheries and are counted by weight.

“I slow the Thrush to about 80 MPH at 250 feet above the water with flaps down and dump all the fry at once as far from the outlet of the lake as possible.

They need to stay in the lake for a year to mature enough to swim into the Pacific Ocean. All of the lakes where I spread salmon must have an outlet to the ocean. They will leave for up to five years and sometimes swim as far south as Mexico before 12-15% of them return to the same location where I spread them,” remarks Doug.

The Alaskan Department of Fish and Game calculates the fish population and the available plankton food supply in the lakes. If the lake can support more fish, Glenn Air is called to restock. If more plankton are needed for the fish to feed on, Glenn Air also sprays liquid nitrogen on the water surface for nutrients to help increase the amount of plankton in the lake. Granular fertilizer is not used because the fish would try to eat it.

Glenn Air started when Doug was hauling diesel fuel to remote mining sites in a Cessna 206. The demand for fuel flown into remote areas grew and Doug bought an Ag-Wagon. Today, Doug pumps 500 gallons of diesel into the Thrush’s hopper and lands it loaded at the remote site. “I don’t like hauling fuel. Obviously, it would be easy to lose control of the loaded Thrush on landing.

So far, I’ve not had any problems,” says Doug.

Glenn Air is proof an ag operation can carve out a niche business just about anywhere. Despite the unlikelihood of a Part 137 operator based in Alaska with its short summers, Doug Glenn has been successful for over 23 years. Seeing a turbine Thrush parked on an Alaskan airport ramp does raise one’s curiosity.

Bug bombers fighting fires

Teixeira II, Nebraska Forest Service, Fire Resource Manager More than 35 years ago, a few folks got together and came up with a wild idea: Let’s get a bunch of aerial applicators from across the state and put together an aerial firefighting program that could help the rural fire departments in the event of a large wild or grass fire. With the cooperation of the Nebraska Forest Service and the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, a list of cooperating aerial applicators, known as the “Emergency Assistance for Wildfire Control” or “Yellow Book” was developed.

The concept was pretty simple. If a wildfire or grass fire was too large and fast moving for the local fire department, they could call the participating applicator in their area and request their assistance. The decision to fly / assist was completely left up to the pilot based on the ability to fly safely and whether they might be in the process of spraying fields for their farming customers. In 1976 this program enrolled more than 100 private applicators from across the state.

From what historical data this writer can find, in 1975, aerial applicators provided assistance on 10 different fires, delivering 47 loads and hauling 7,000 gallons of fire retardant solution.

Before the use of Class A foam, a liquid ammonium polyphosphate fertilizer was used and mixed with water. Today, only Class A foam can be used.

After the Ft. Robinson and Belmont fires of 1989, the need for training pilots and firefighters was recognized. This training program was developed by

Ralph Moul of the State Fire Marshal’s Training Division and Ole Sihm, an aerial applicator from Grant. The Wildland Aircraft Tactics / Pilot Rescue program was first presented at the Les Lukert Winter Conference in 1991. They also acquired their first training fuselage that year.

The largest fire receiving the assistance of aerial applicators was the MullenThedford fire of 1999. On March 18, 3 aircraft dumped 26,000 gallons of water and 260 gallons of foam on a fire that, ultimately, scorched 79,000 acres.

The aerial applicator program continues today, and is still funded through the Governor’s Emergency Fund.

However, like anything else, we have fewer cooperating pilots. The list has gotten smaller over the years for many reasons, so the future of the program is uncertain. As of this writing, the 2011 “Yellow Book” has gone to print with only 20 cooperating applicators.

This past year Roger “Rod” Shelburne of Ogallala, a very good and long-time participant of both the aerial applicator program and fire service, passed. The 2011 “Yellow Book” has been dedicated to him.

Air Tractor shines at 2011 49th Paris Air Show

by Igor Bozinovski The 49th International Paris Air Show, known locally as “Le Salon du Bourget” and recognized as the world’s oldest and largest air & space industry exhibition, took place June 20-26, 2011 at Le Bourget Airport. Located on the outskirts of Paris, the airport is the very site where Charles Lindbergh landed after the first trans-Atlantic flight over 80 years ago.

The event saw a participation of more than 2,100 international exhibitors that exhibited over 140 aircraft from 14 countries. One company that shined at Le Bourget was Olney, Texas-based Air Tractor Inc., and its highly-successful European dealer - Valencia, Spain-based company Air Tractor Europe. The second joint appearance of these two companies at the Paris Air Show marked the third year in a row that the Air Tractor brand was at the Paris Air Show. The teams were lead by Mr. Lee Jackson of Air Tractor Inc. and by Mr. Vicente Huerta of Air Tractor Europe and Avialsa T-35.

Despite the fact that this year’s Paris Air Show was smaller than that of 2009 and 2007, this event can be considered highly successful for Air Tractor Inc. and Air Tractor Europe. Paying tribute to Mr. Leland Snow, the US-Spain company duo exhibited two highly impressive aircraft: the fire-fighting amphibious AT-802A Fire Boss and the counterinsurgency (COIN) AT-802U. The AT-802A Fire Boss represented the most successful singleengine fire fighting aircraft of all time and is owned by Air Tractor Europe’s sister company, Avialsa T-35 S.L., Thanks to the affordability, ease of operation and maintenance, high sophistication in terms of its water, foam and retardant

dispersal systems, over 415 AT-802As have been manufactured. The AT-802A is flying in US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Cyprus, Israel and Australia. Many other wildfire-affected countries are seriously considering employing these unique aircraft for protection of their citizens and national interests.

The highlight of Air Tractor’s presence at the 49th International Paris Air Show, however, was the two-seat armored and armed AT-802U COIN aircraft. It was the very same aircraft that appeared at Le Bourget in 2009 with one very significant difference - this year the AT-802U arrived at Paris not as a demonstration-of-concept aircraft but as a pure combat plane that is already operational. Designed to support special operation units from forward locations, the versatile, rugged and dependable AT-802U was exhibited at Paris with new types of weapons along with the Wescam MX-15Di retractable airborne reconnaissance infrared sensor turret.

Unlike 2009, this Wescam unit was connected and powered to demonstrate its capabilities to the professionals that were interested in this small fighting beast. The AT-802U is able to carry out complex, 10-hour plus intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions while carrying a weapons load of up to 8,164lb (3,703kg).

The Paris Air Show also produced an important announcement for the Air Tractor community. Air Tractor Europe’s sister company Avialsa T-35 S.L. presented EUREKA’s Eurostars Programme a 1.99 million Euro project

for creation of an advanced training center for the AT-802 aircraft. The project is scheduled to be completed

by December 31, 2013 and includes a flight simulator system, officially named Flight & Navigation Procedures Trainer (FNPT), for pilots of AT-802 aircraft in land and amphibious configurations. The simulator will be developed with unique capabilities to simulate fire-fighting

missions with a level of fidelity and accuracy as described in the JAR-SDT 3A for an FNPT. The successful completion of this project will significantly help in increasing the quality of training of AT802 pilots, and will definitely supplement the recent appearing of the two-seat AT-802 Fire Boss amphibian fire-fighting and training aircraft.

Pollinating Texas style

One Schweizer and nine R22 helicopters wind up the pollinating season on the Kubecka Flying Service ramp in Edna, Texas. The pilots come from all over for four to five weeks of flying every day, weather permitting, from 11a to 2p pollinating seed rice. Dan Kubecka’s company has been doing this kind of flying for over ten years, in addition to aerial applications and wild hog control. The seed rice is planted in alternating rows of male and female rice plants. The helicopters fly two to three feet above the male plants at 15-20 mph disturbing the air to move the pollen to the female plants. Pollinating starts the end of June until the first of August.

TracMap releases new GPS guidance product Recent new entrant to the guidance market, TracMap have already established a reputation for easy to use and reliable systems.

This is now further enhanced by the release of TracMap Lite. This new addition to the TracMap range is targeted at pilots looking for a basic guidance system. EPA solicits regional agriculture IPM grants proposals for 2011 The EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs is soliciting proposals for new Regional Agricultural IPM Grants totaling $500,000 for projects that support Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches to reduce pesticide risk in agriculture. The agency anticipates funding approximately 10 projects, one per EPA Region, with a maximum funding level of $50,000 per project.

Assistance under this competition is available to states, the District of

Columbia, territories, city or township governments, county governments, any agency or instrumentality of a state including state universities and all federally recognized Indian tribal governments to implement integrated pest management in agricultural settings in the United States. Initial applications must be submitted on or before Monday, September 19, 2011.

The goal of these grants is to reduce the risks associated with the use of

pesticides in agriculture by increasing IPM adoption. These grants were developed to help formalize and expand public-private stewardship and collaborative pesticide risk reduction efforts in agriculture.

The Regional Agriculture IPM Grant is one of many grants that the agency issues to further the adoption of promising technologies and practices that reduce pesticide risk in various sectors. The agency recently announced

the availability of approximately $1 million in grants to further the implementation of IPM in and around the nation’s public schools.

RTCA, Inc., stated in the joint filing that LightSquared has “entirely failed” to solve interference problems, which threaten the future of a GPS-based air traffic system – and no technology exists to provide a remedy.

“The evidence is clear: LightSquared’s proposal puts the entire GPS system at risk,” said AOPA President and CEO Craig L. Fuller. “Study after study has shown that LightSquared’s plan is simply ‘incompatible’ with GPS. At the same time, the company’s proposed solutions rely heavily on technology that doesn’t exist. President and CEO Pete Bunce. “The safety of general aviation and the traveling public relies on a secure and reliable GPS network. LightSquared’s revised proposal fails to protect aviation use of GPS. It must be rejected to allow the aviation industry to modernize and grow.”

LightSquared, after the adverse test results emerged, acknowledged the problems, but blamed the present conflict on past GPS designs. The company publicized an offer of a sixmonth “standstill” period -- while also insisting that modification of existing and future GPS receivers to filter out extraneous signals be part of the solution.

AOPA and GAMA characterized LightSquared’s counterproposal as “extremely far-fetched in the aviation context.”

LightSquared “assumes that suitable filters will soon become available. No evidence suggests that will be the case. Absolutely no filters exist today that can reliably protect GPS from LightSquared interference,” wrote Melissa Rudinger, AOPA senior vice president, and Jens Hennig, GAMA vice president of operations. The FAA’s own impact statement concluded that “no realistic chance exists that a suitable interference solution can be invented, qualified for aviation use, and certified for installation across the fleet in less than ten to fifteen years,” they said.

Given the threats to the GPS-based Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) from the LightSquared network proposal, and technological hurdles to a solution, offering a six-month standstill “is really no offer at all,” they said.

With LightSquared having “entirely failed” to show that its operations are compatible with GPS despite “ample time” for that demonstration, the associations said, the FCC should withdraw its authorization and initiate a rulemaking process to ensure that issues raised in the case are “fully reviewed and approved by the FAA and the Department of Defense before such proposals receive any type of conditional or permanent authorization from the FCC.” In the months since LightSquared obtained its conditional waiver, opposition has grown across aviation and other industries along with awareness of the risks posed by the high-powered network for GPS. In May

many elected officials, concerned about the impact on aviation and other GPS users – such as agriculture – had joined in calling on FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to revisit the network approval process. An FCC bureau conditionally approved the network plan before technical study results were available, and without review by the full FCC.

Wire Traps I have been in the ag aviation business for over 40 years; half of that time owning my own operation in the hills of Mississippi.

During those years, I garnered all the information I could get my hands on and placed in a loose-leaf notebook. I labeled my collection of lessons learned “Suggested Ag Pilot Reading”. I used the term “suggested” because I had a pilot (one of the best I have ever known) who had a little bit of an anti-authority attitude. If I had entitled the notebook, “Required Ag Pilot Reading,” he would have never touched it.

One of the topics I was able to collect quite a few tips for was Wires - Traps and Tips. Here are some of those traps and tips that I have included in the Flying AgAirUpdate 4.66" x syllabus.

6.03 Tiger Ag Flight Training

• Change In Direction- Whenever you see a line of poles along the border of the field you are spraying, look carefully to see if there is a wire that crosses the road. If there is, you can bet there will be a guy wire off that pole that enters the field you are spraying and will come very close to your wing tip as you make a spray pass.

• Wire Sag- During the summer, especially in the South, people are running air conditioners (lots of current, lots of heat) and the outside air temperature may reach into the high 90s. Electrical wires between poles or towers may sag several inches to several feet and wires that you flew under in cooler air two months earlier when the crop was only a few inches high may

• Telephone Wires- This may not be such a problem as it was 20-30 years ago, but it is still worth noting. Often times a black telephone wire will be half way up the pole, darn near invisible until the split second before you fly through it.

• Wires Across Corners- This is a very insidious danger. Many times I have seen wires strung across a corner and their poles hidden in trees, or on the opposite side of the road.

• Old House Sites- Often old, dead electrical and telephone wires will be where an old house site once was.

Inspect these old house sites very carefully.

across the top of high-tension, cross-country type wires are difficult to see. If you must jump one of these cables, give yourself lots of extra clearance. I lost a highly competent and very good friend because of them.

• Acute Angle Wires- This could be difficult to explain. When you are spraying such a field, enter the field over the top of the wires in such a way that as the swath progresses across the field, the wires are moving further away from you. Coming into a field from the other direction could very easily trap your wing tip under the wires.

Surely there are other wire traps that I have not listed here. If you know of some, please let me know and I will include them in Flying Tiger Aviation’s Basic Ag Flight syllabus. And so, as always, be safe, have fun and make money,

in a larger machine.

The mid season doldrums slip up on us before we know it. It’s fatigue that borders on exhaustion; perhaps a touch of anxiety over having so many other things on hold.

Family life, appointments, ball games and birthdays - they all take a back seat to the job at hand. That is just the way it is in the life of an ag pilot.

The trouble I see, and I’ve seen it in my own flying, is that a pilot’s senses can become dulled to the point of distraction. After making the same motions thousands of times and in many cases over the same fields flying becomes tedious, almost monotonous.

I believe that it is more likely to occur in night flying, simply because of the lack of visual stimulation. Most of the time a night pilot is floating around in a vat of ink. There is a lot of apprehension involved in flying in the dark, which increases stress and accelerates fatigue.

The schedule a night pilot keeps is also a factor.

A pilot might experience the “asleep at the wheel” syndrome, suddenly finding that he is a half hour out and not remembering in detail what he had just been doing. That might sound unlikely and certainly dangerous, but it happens. I think this could be the cause of a lot of wire strikes, drift claims and chemical mix ups.

Long hours and a hectic work schedule are an inherent part of what we do. It’s the nature of the business and it takes some getting used to, especially for a new guy or when getting back in the saddle at the beginning of the season.

Ag pilots view their occupational stamina as an issue of pride and a gauge of their experience and abilities.

Experience should also tell a guy when he’s had enough. Sure, you can go twelve hours in the cockpit without a break, and I know a few operators who demand just that. However, the smart operator or pilot takes an opportunity to

get out and stretch every now and then.

That’s hard to do when the work orders are accumulating and the clock is ticking.

Just by climbing out of the cockpit to clean the windshield and lights or to pump on fuel helps with limbering up stiff knees or a kinked back and gives a pilot a minute or two walk around and clear his head. It’s not a lot, but it helps.

You’ll be sitting on the ground for these things to be done anyway.

A guy has got to stay sharp in this line of work. If a pilot is getting run down to the point of losing his focus, then that’s a pilot whose odds are stacking up against him; at the very least he could wind up having to explain why the wrong field got sprayed or why he flew into a set of wires that he should have known were there. Those kinds of explanations are hard to come by.

Fatigue breeds complacency.

Short cutting standards or procedures in order to get the work done can become a crutch that will inevitably lead to a botched job or a bent airplane.

Of course it’s not only we pilots who get run down and worn out. The ground crew, the office folks and even the cleaning lady get frazzled after months

of constant grind. The whole operation gets tired which can be quite evident in the attitudes and dispositions of all involved. It’s important to keep those things in mind and perhaps bite our lip when the guy on the other end of the load hose seems to stumble a bit, the lady behind the desk snaps, or the boss growls. I try to carry a few “grains of salt” around at all times and keep them handy. It’s a good idea to use caution when offering them to others, however.

ability to have a relationship with God. If humanity is ever going to have a relationship with God, it has to be God doing the initiating and speaking. A spiritually dead person cannot know and understand a holy and infinite God unless God reveals Himself to that person.

The God of the Bible, creator of everything in heaven and earth, used many ways to speak to humanity. God spoke to Abraham in a vision and by an angel. God spoke to Joseph in dreams.

God spoke to Moses through a burning bush and face to face. God spoke to Daniel in dreams, visions and through angels. God spoke to Elijah in a still small voice and God spoke a warning to Balaam through a donkey. The Pharisees said, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But Jesus said, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately

cry out” (Luke 19:39-40). God can speak through a stone just as easy as He can speak through a human.

The Old Testament prophets were men of faith, but they didn’t understand everything that God revealed to them.

God used many men to write the Old Testament, speaking to each one of them in different revelations, but none of the Old Testament prophets had the full truth of God. Peter tells us, “Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into” (1 Peter 1:10-12). The Old Testament prophets were writing down what God told them, but they didn’t fully understand all they wrote about. Not even the angels in heaven understood fully what God had for the future of humanity.

“God, in these last days, spoken to us

by His Son,(Jesus Christ) whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:2). From an earthly point of view, Jesus Christ was born into an insignificant and poor Jewish family. Jesus Christ grew up in obscurity and only one time did He leave the boundaries of Israel, and then only for a short period of time. Jesus Christ had very little earthly wealth or worldly influence and had no training or education in worldly schools. As a very young child Jesus Christ caused a king so much worry that the king killed many young boys trying to kill Jesus Christ. As a young boy he puzzled the learned theologians and lawyers with His knowledge. As a man He walked upon the water of the Sea of Galilee and calmed a raging storm on that same sea.

As a traveling prophet, teacher and

preacher, Jesus Christ healed hundreds of people from many diseases and demonic oppression without any medicine, and didn’t charge anyone for His services. Jesus Christ never wrote a book and yet thousands of books have been written about Him. Jesus Christ never wrote a song and yet He has been the topic of thousands of songs. Jesus Christ never founded a school or college, and yet all the schools in history have not had as many students as Jesus Christ has.

Jesus Christ never practiced medicine and yet He has healed more broken hearts and healed more shattered emotions than all the doctors in history have healed broken bones. Thousands of famous men have lived and died; but Jesus Christ still lives, sitting at the right hand of God (Hebrews 12:2). Herod tried to kill Jesus Christ, but failed. Satan tried to seduce Jesus Christ into following him, but he failed. Death and the grave tried to hold Jesus Christ, but they also failed.

God is still speaking to humanity through His Son, Jesus Christ, but most humans cannot hear because “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 3:14). To become spiritually alive and

able to understand what God is saying a person must be spiritually born again (John 3:1-16). How do we do that? By believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and receiving God’s Holy Spirit who gives us God’s divine power to live a godly life (Ephesians 1:13-14; 2 Peter 1:1-4), and escape the clutches of this corrupt world, your sinful flesh and Satan and his demonic forces. Here are some of the words that Jesus is speaking to you!

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die…I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him…He who has seen Me has seen the Father…The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works” (John 11:25-26,14:6-10). If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus Christ—like Father, like Son. He is our Lord and Savior—the preeminent One—the Savior of the world. Jesus Christ will be your Savior or He will be your judge! Is your name written in God’s book of life? Jesus Christ is speaking to you today—are you listening?

I often hear the following comments from aerial applicators using CoRoN® as the diluent. “This stuff hangs in the air a lot longer.” “This material gets all over my windshield and I never get this with water.”

“I can see this material drifting downwind.”

by Dennis R. Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas About this time of year I start to hear talk about how the “diluent” changes the application efficiency and/or drift potential. Diluent is defined as “a substance causing dilution.” Applicators think of this as a carrier and in most

cases it is simply water. Water is a substance that evaporates quickly, especially when it is being distributed in very small droplets. Other substances such as CoRoN® may be used as all or part of the diluent to reduce evaporation, provide some additional wetting-sticking agent, add plant nutritional value, or

help manipulate the droplet spectrum.

CoRoN® is typically used as a diluent on many fungicide applications on corn with a total volume of spray being in the 2 GPA range. Fungicide application tests conducted over the last couple of years indicate that this combination is very effective toward enhancing

All applications have some small amount of the total spray volume in relatively small droplets. The number of small droplets generally increases when the total application volume decreases.

This has to happen so there are enough droplets to provide adequate coverage.

Obviously, if the material is one that evaporates quickly, such as water, the smaller droplets don’t survive very long under warm or hot and dry conditions.

One could easily argue that any diluent that reduces evaporation potential should help the smaller droplets survive to get into the canopy and on target.

The perception that small droplets made from applications with products that don’t evaporate quickly and hang in the air longer may be true. This doesn’t mean that there were smaller droplets generated initially; perhaps they just survived longer in the environment they were released into. If a small water droplet impacts a dry aircraft windshield, it will evaporate very quickly. If an oily or non-evaporative substance impacts that same windshield and doesn’t evaporate, the scene is much different. As several of these small droplets accumulate, the windshield very quickly becomes opaque and difficult to see through. This often leads applicators to believe that these type carriers have smaller droplets and are more prone to hang in the air.

Low evaporation rate products like CoRoN® set up this scenario. Research shows they do help product application efficiency and efficacy. Application evaluations indicate this doesn’t come without some downsides. So, there we are in the real world!

But what Nick says has really made his business “phenomenal” is his company’s corn fungicide work. “We get three or four weeks of corn fungicide work a year where we go as hard as we can go with our 602. It’s really made our business what it is.

The company works through September and early October doing cover crop seeding that Nick says is starting to get more consistent in the area. Then, about the second week of October, he says, “It’s time to clean up

Nick flies the company’s AT602, acquired this past winter, and well equipped with a Satloc M3, a Hemisphere Intelliflow® flow controller and CP adjustable spray nozzles. “The versatility of CP nozzles is very nice,“ says Nick, “It helps our efficiency tremendously to be able to go from five gallons to two gallons in a matter of five minutes just by switching orifices. They do a great job” The company does shape files for every spray job using AgSync aerial application software. “Every field we go

to has a boundary on it. The GPS flies us right to the field and the precision is incredible.”

When Nick does five-gallon work in the AT-602 he typically uses a 75-foot swath; when doing two-gallon work he bumps it up to 80 feet.

“The 602 is a beautiful aircraft to fly,” says Nick. “It’s light on the controls – maybe a little heavier than the 502, but hardly noticeable – and it can get a lot of work done.”

Chad Olds is the ground manager and does inventory and keeps application operations organized. Doug Bontrager handles work on the ground and does double duty in the Cessna Ag Truck.

Nick’s cousin, Rhys Yoder, also helps out when times are busy.

Trennis Vaughn and Dennis Spreuer, longtime local ag pilots with their own aerial application businesses, occasionally step in to pick up the slack when orders start really stacking up.

“Dennis is trying to slow down,” says Nick, “but once you get this industry in you, it’s hard to get out.”

Trennis, an A&P mechanic, also does some of Nick’s 100-hour inspections.

Annual inspections are done by Garrett Eby, of Agriflite Services out of Wakarusa, Indiana. Nick uses AgSync AeroManage to keep the aircraft up-to-date on required and upcoming maintenance needs.

The company’s mixing and loading activities, handled at Nick’s private airstrip, is done on a 70 x 70-foot cement pad, drained to one central location, and sealed to contain any spill.

An ongoing challenge for Nick is maintaining good relations with residents living near the fields he sprays.

“In our area,” Nick says, “we have a lot of people living around the fields we spray and, as far as our potato work goes, we are in those fields every five to seven days.”

So Nick employs an effective public relations strategy. “For the farmers growing potatoes for Frito Lay, we get big bags of potato chips and deliver them along with our business cards to tell residents what we are doing. This works really well letting people know we are here and doing a professional job, not just out flying around and having a good time.”

But for Nick it all comes down to productivity. “When we have application work to do,” says Nick, “we need to be able to get it done efficiently and with precision. Our ‘602 and ‘502 do a phenomenal job for us. They are stateof-the-art aircraft and the equipment we have on them is state-of-the-art.”

“They give us confidence.” he concludes, “that we can do the best job that can be done – because we have the best equipment available to do it.”

The buyer must fill out FAA Form 8050-1, “Aircraft Registration Application,” in order to apply for a new registration in his or her name.

This is a two-part carbon copy form, and the pink copy of the form is to be torn off and placed in the aircraft as the buyer’s new temporary registration. You can obtain the 80501 form from AOPA, your local flight standards district office, or at many airports. Finally, the buyer should include a check or money order for $5 made payable to the FAA to be included in the paperwork submission (including the bill of sale and the registration application).

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Superior Air Parts and Lycoming (formerly Textron Lycoming) fuel-injected engines. This AD requires removing from service, certain fuel servos. This AD became/will be effective August 16, 2011.

This AD requires, within five flight hours after the effective date of this AD, removing your fuel servo if AFS Diaphragm P/N AV2541801 or AV2541803 was installed at any time after May 20, 2010, as specified in AFS MSB AFS-SB6, Revision 2, dated April 6, 2011.

On August 10, 2010, a Piper PA32R-301 airplane crashed after reporting a loss of engine power. The subsequent investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board suspects a faulty fuel servo, Bendix model RSA10ED1. AVStar Fuel Systems (AFS) had overhauled the fuel servo using a new AFS diaphragm, part number (P/N) AV2541803. The diaphragm failed after 19 flight hours (FH) since new due to suspected manufacturing defects. AVStar Fuel Systems produces diaphragms, P/ Ns AV2541801 and AV2541803 under a parts manufacturing authorization (PMA).

Diaphragms produced from specific lot numbers could have stud threads that don’t meet design, incomplete braze between the stud and hub, and studs made from lower temper material.

Diaphragms from these lots could fail in fatigue prematurely. About 261 diaphragms, P/Ns AV2541801 and AV2541803, might still be service inside either AFS new or overhauled servos of any manufacturer (Bendix or Precision).

Other overhaul facilities may also have purchased AFS diaphragms between the dates of May 21, 2010, and October 19, 2010, and used these diaphragms in their overhauls. This condition, if not corrected, could result in an in-flight engine shutdown due to a failed fuel servo diaphragm and damage to the airplane.

The FAA estimates this AD affects 60,000 engines installed on aircraft of U.S. registry. It also estimates it will take about 0.5 work-hour per engine to perform the inspection, 2.0 work-hours per engine to remove the servo from 261 engines with discrepant AFS Diaphragm P/N AV2541801 or AV2541803.

Ag flying takes you to the dance

by Bill Lavender The portion of the Red River Valley that runs between North Dakota and Minnesota boasts some of the best farmland in the United States. The fertile soil of the Red River Valley, now drained by the Red River of the North (that flows north) were formed from lacustrine (lake) deposits of silt from Lake Agassiz. It is believed this prehistoric lake contained more water than all the lakes of the world combined.

Although the winters of North Dakota can be extremely cold, with an average January temperature of -2°F, the summers are pleasant with the June sun rising at about 5.30 am and setting at 9.30 pm. This allows plenty of daylight for crops to grow. Spring wheat has given way to soybeans and corn as the most plentiful crops. Sunflowers, edible beans, sugar beets and other cereal crops are planted as well. The 39 million acres

of farmland in North Dakota create a strong demand for aerial applications during its 100-140 days a year that are frost free. One of those companies is Tall Towers Aviation, Inc. owned by Tim McPherson, based 35 miles northwest of Fargo in Page, North Dakota.

Tim comes from a family of eleven siblings. In the summer of 1977, his first summer after high school, and attending North Dakota School of Science in the Business Aviation program at Wahpeton, ND, he loaded and worked on ag-planes at Tri-State Aviation under the mentorship of Gerry Beck. During his second summer with Tri-State, he started flying ag at the age of 19. He continued to work at Tri-State during the winter under the supervision of Beck, A few years later, he worked with Bob Odegaard of Kindred, ND., With the combined hours from Bob and Gerry, he earned both his A&P and IA licenses.

About 100 miles north of Wahpeton, Page had been without an ag operator in the area for several years. Tim saw this as an opportunity to start his own business, Tall Towers Aviation, named after two nearby towers that are 2060 and 2063 feet AGL. One of the towers was the first to exceed 2,000 feet in height and from 1992-2009 was the world’s highest structure. It remains the highest structure in the U.S. This was also the name of the athletic conference of the schools in the area when Tim was in school and it essentially represented the trade area that would be established.

To launch Tall Towers Aviation, Tim leased a CallAir A-9 from the farmer that he had watched spray since he was in 2nd grade when he knew he wanted to be an ag-pilot, and he flew off of his airstrip also. Following his first season, during the winter, he bought and rebuilt a wrecked Ag-Cat that replaced the

CallAir. This was the beginning of more than 20 Ag-Cats that Tim would rebuild over the next 30 years.

As Tall Towers Aviation’s spray area grew, a faster plane was needed. During the winter of 2000 Tim converted a Super B Ag-Cat to use a PT6A-15 engine.

Another operator north of Page had recently bought an Air Tractor AT502.

The rest of his fleet was Ag-Cats and he wanted to trade Tim the AT502 for the turbine-powered Super B Ag-Cat. Tall Towers Aviation has operated Air Tractors in its fleet ever since. Today, the company operates an AT502, AT400, C-188 and a recently rebuilt Ag-Cat.



Along with the aerial spraying ops, Tim farms 2,400 acres and provides a custom ground spraying service using a John Deere RoGator and a TerraGator.

The ground machines are used primarily for herbicide applications. “Our largest customer needed ground applications because of sensitive areas and shelter belts (trees planted years ago as windbreaks). Now, we provide custom spray services and it helps compliment our aerial services, especially in an area that is difficult for the airplane to spray,� explains Tim. The winter months are spent in the shop working on airplanes.

Soybeans and corn make up the bulk of the spraying with some sugar beets, edible beans, sunflower, and wheat applications. Most of the spring wheat acreage is now planted in corn and is no-till or minimum-till planted. A typical

farmstead is 3,000 acres planted in 1/4 sections (160 acres). With all of the Roundup Ready crops, drift complaints have been dramatically reduced overall in the industry. Also, wheat receives a Roundup application as a harvest aid.

So much Roundup has been used for weed control, Tim is starting to see a resistance to it. This is causing the need for a chemical rate increase, as well as always adding ammonium sulfate (AMS) to the tank mix for better control. These applications are made at 2-3 GPA. On a good day, an AT502 can cover 1,8002000 acres at this rate.

There is more to this story than a successful ag-operator based in North Dakota. Tim McPherson has a love of aviation that takes him out of the cockpit of an AT502 into that of a P-51D Mustang, for starters. The Mustang part

Along with a Cascade Pressure Cowl for ram air into the engine, Tall Towers Aviation uses the Tri-State Aviation Super Boom designed by Gerry Beck. It is dropped below the trailing edge fitted with dropped nozzles. The Super Boom is an airfoil and adds lift helping to keep the aircraft tail up when loaded.

Of course, this means the boom brackets have to be checked regularly for cracking. The boom is made of aluminum. Tim would like to see it offered in stainless steel.

In 1988 Tim started buying his first P-51D parts, wheels and landing gear.

For 18 years, he steadily collected parts he needed to build “Boomer”. Sue, Tim’s wife, managed the office for many of the early years and she would often wonder what some of those checks would be for to somebody in California or Florida. He would tell her it was for parts. She was

not satisfied with just parts, but parts for what, an Ag-Cat? She said she hadn’t heard of an Ag-Cat with retractable gear.

He had to tell her eventually and in the process, said he would call the P-51D, Sweet Sue! That was all fine until his two sons were helping him paint Boomer and they had always heard him tell her it was going to be named “Sweet Sue”. She had sorta known all along it would be named Boomer, but played along anyway.

owned by Tim’s brother, Jerry McPherson, who is an ag-operator in Yuma, Colorado.

In 1981, the aircraft was a total loss in a hangar fire. Somehow, the data plate survived and ended up in the possession of Jack Roush of NASCAR fame. Fortunately, Tim was able to buy Boomer’s data plate from Roush and rebuild the aircraft from the ground up with parts from probably 25-30 different planes.

Tim started assembling his collection of P-51D parts in 2003. He made Boomer’s maiden flight with its 1,650 SHP Merlin engine and 12-foot prop on July 17, 2006. “Flying Boomer is not that much unlike an ag-plane except for its immense torque on takeoff and, of course, the ability to reach 400 MPH,” describes Tim. Tim’s involvement in aviation doesn’t stop with the P51. Wanting to recognize the importance of North Dakota agriculture and ag-flying, in 2003 Tim built up and donated an A-Model Ag-Cat for display at the Fargo Air Museum.

The Ag-Cat dramatically “flies” through a wall mural in the main area of the museum. It appears to be pulling up at the end of a spray run. Besides Tim donating the airframe, the engine shell

was furnished by Covington Aircraft Engines, the slow turning propeller by Maxwell Propeller and the Super Booms

by Gerry Beck. Tim serves on the Board of Directors at the museum and is actively involved in its many projects. The museum is known for its displays being flyable (www.fargoairmuseum.org).

Another aviation project Tim is part of is “Duggy” - the Smile in the Sky Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Mitch Carley, Bob Odegaard and Tim bought and restored the C-47 and painted it using 45 gallons of Air Tractor yellow on it and its famous cockpit smile. Duggy’s purpose is to get kids to live their dreams, even if they are not aviation related. Duggy can be seen at air shows and airports throughout America making presentations to children. Who knows, maybe one day there will be a cartoon series about Duggy (www.duggy.com). The possibilities and potential of this Smile in the Sky C-47 are endless.

If there is a cartoon series about Duggy, it won’t be anything new to Tim and his partners. In 2007, Tim, Carley and Odegaard produced and released the DVD “Thunder Over Reno” (www. thunderoverreno.com). Although the movie did not overwhelm theaters with

Duggy and Bob Odegaard’s #57 in formation flight.

attendance, it portrayed fantastic flying footage.

On Opening Day, September 21, the movie was viewed at the Fargo theater in downtown Fargo. There was no doubt what was going on at the theater with both Boomer and Odegaard’s F2G-1D Super Corsair #57 posed on the street in front of the theater.

When Tim says, “Ag flying gets you to the dance”, it is evident the success of Tall Towers Aviation allows Tim to participate in a variety of aviation projects. His ag-flying skills made for an easy transition to flying Boomer. His mechanical skills made building Boomer

possible, along with rebuilding a fleet of ag-planes. Combined with his overall love of aviation, Tim has been able to make it all fit together.

• For those of us who work in multiple states, yes. We could also remove non-essential state employees, save on taxes, and balance budgets.

• One license for all 50 states!

• Could be a boom for NAAA membership to give out some credits at convention and Op SAFE clinics. Some differences between states of course but in the end they are all following EPA guidelines anyhow.

it should be recip to other states like hand gun license. Too much BS with going from one state to another to fly. I just had to take the test in Iowa, when I’ve had a license in Texas for 32 years.

In the interest of Homeland Security and accountability this day in age, why hasn’t this happened sooner? I am sick and tired of greedy operators manipulating the state laws to their financial advantage instead of earning a client’s business.

• Each state has their own problems or lack of to deal with what works for one state may really be an unnecessary burden on another • Although it sounds handy to have a single license that covers all states; having the federal government involved more than they already are would be a detriment to the industry.

• States are better prepared for oversight rather than federal government.

• What effects a chemical has on one state may not be the same in another due to temps, wind and rainfall. Each state should regulate their own industry.

I’ll pass Federal government has too much regulatory power already YES!!!!! I have over 30 years experience with aerial application, and it has always amazed me that as soon as I cross an imaginary line on a map, I must suddenly forget all that I know and have learned about applying chemicals by air! I can think of no other reason why I would have to be tested after crossing that line, or is it so the state I’ve entered can now collect a fee (tax)? A federal license program is long overdue!

In theory it might be better, but in practice all applicators should be following the manufacturers instructions already?

The states could charge a registration fee per state to generate revenue.

Having been an applicator for thirty years, holding licenses in four states

and being a state regulator for over five years, I do not believe that one license for the entire U.S. would be a good idea. I do feel that the “core” portion of a general applicators license covering the EPA and other federal requirements would be a good idea. However, each state has enough differences in agricultural makeup, laws, weather conditions, etc. that they (the state) need to maintain their own state specific test before granting an individual the right to operate as a licensed aerial applicator within that state.

Each state has the right of granting reciprocity to applicators of another state, if they so desire.

• I think the federal government makes a mess out of everything it gets involved with.

pilot reported seeing an airplane coming towards him, but assumed the airplane would turn in front of him towards the runway. When the Aero Commander pilot noticed the other airplane was on a collision course with his airplane, he applied throttle to gain the attention of the other pilot, but was unsuccessful.

The propeller of the Air Tractor struck the right wing of the Aero Commander, substantially damaging its right wing.

The pilots reported that there were no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframes and engines of their respective aircraft that would have precluded normal flight.

Aircraft: Schweizer Aircraft Corp G-164B Injuries: 1 Uninjured.

On June 11, 2011 a Schweizer G-164B lost engine power after takeoff. The airplane struck a rice levee and impacted terrain. A post-impact fire ensued and the airplane was substantially damaged.

The pilot was not injured. According to the pilot, the engine lost power immediately after liftoff. The landing gear struck a rice levee and the airplane nosed into the ground and rolled onto its side. There was fire after impact.

On June 1, 2011 a Hiller UH-12E

performed an emergency autorotation into a grove of cherry trees while performing low level agricultural operations near Stockton, California. The pilot was not injured and the aircraft sustained substantial damage. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time for the local area agricultural flight.

The pilot reported that he was parked at the chemical loading dock, which housed the agricultural spray he was using for his dusting. There was a chemical tank and another airplane parked in front of him. After loading his tanks he proceeded to increase the throttle and turn to the right while watching his left wing to clear the obstacles. The Air Tractor pilot commented that he was not watching his right wing due to the sun. At that time, the pilot of the Aero Commander was stopped on the taxiway and idling, waiting to proceed towards the loading dock. The Aero Commander

Upon reflection the pilot reported that he had lost track of time and ran out of fuel causing the loss of power. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe and engine that would have precluded normal flight.

NTSB Identification: *CEN11LA404* Date: June 16, 2011 Location: Athleimer, AR Aircraft: AYRES CORPORATION S2R-T34 Injuries: 1 Minor.

On June 16, 2011 an Ayres Corporation S2R-T34, sustained substantial damage when it made a forced landing to a soybean field after an uncontained engine failure and in-flight fire. The pilot sustained minor injuries.

According to the pilot, he departed with 2,400 pounds of fertilizer and flew to a 23-acre field approximately onemile from where he departed. Just as he started his first pass, and without any warning, the engine “exploded” and the propeller “slammed” to a stop.

He also saw flames around the cowling and exiting the exhaust stack. The pilot immediately established best glide speed

and headed toward a soybean field while dumping the fertilizer. He said that as he was approaching the field, there was a lot of black soot coming from the engine and he could still see flames and pieces of metal exiting the exhaust stack.

As he touched down in the field, he wanted to avoid hitting a canal, but the smoke was too thick for him to see. The landing gear struck the canal and was torn off the airplane. It then skidded for approximately 75 feet before coming to a stop, and the pilot was able to exit the airplane before it was consumed by fire.

The airplane and engine were recovered and taken to a secure salvage facility for further examination.

The pilot reported that he had returned from a prior agricultural application flight. The helicopter chemical tank was loaded with cleaning solution. The pilot stated that he increased engine power and lifted off again. However, immediately after takeoff, the engine and rotor speed began to decrease,

damage to the airframe. The pilot did not report any failures or malfunctions related to the helicopter that occurred prior to the accident. However, the chemical tank was determined to have been loaded with approximately 90 gallons of cleaning solution, instead of the intended 70 gallons. He commented that the aircraft may have been on a slight incline when the solution was loaded, allowing the right side tank to fill more than the left side tank. As a result, he was unaware of the overload condition. The pilot added that closer monitoring of the helicopter and

and the pilot selected a nearby location for a landing. He flared for touchdown about 10 feet above ground level in order to minimize the forward speed.

The helicopter touched down on the rear portion of the landing skids and began to pitch forward. The pilot responded by applying aft cyclic control to prevent the helicopter from nosing over. He subsequently heard a bang and observed debris coming from the aircraft. He shut down the engine and secured the helicopter. On June 18, 2011 a Piper PA-25-235 was substantially damaged during an in-flight collision with terrain near Faith, South Dakota. The pilot sustained minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, which was not operated on a flight plan. The exact flight itinerary has not been determined at this time.

On June 21, 2011 an Air Tractor AT301 collided with terrain in a field near Hogeland, Montana. The pilot sustained fatal injuries. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the forward fuselage and both wings.

The airplane was located in an agricultural field. The airplane came to rest nose-down, with the forward fuselage sustaining crush damage from the firewall through to the forward cabin. The tail cone remained attached and canted about 15 degrees to the left with the vertical stabilizer and rudder remaining attached. The right horizontal stabilizer and elevator had become separated from their mount points, and were located forward of the wreckage.

The left horizontal stabilizer and elevator remained attached, and exhibited 90-degrees upward bending mid-span.

The left wing sustained accordion-like crush damage perpendicular to the chord, from the leading edge through to the aft spar. The right wing sustained crush damage limited to the leading edge.

During recovery, the engine was located buried about three feet in the dirt below the firewall area. The twoblade-propeller sustained leading edge nicks, gouges and scratches with both tips twisted about 90-degrees.

Aircraft: Rockwell International S-2R Injuries: 1 Serious.

On June 23, 2011 a Rockwell International S-2R collided with terrain during a forced landing near Brawley, California. The pilot sustained serious injuries. The airplane sustained substantial damage during the impact sequence, and was consumed by post crash fire.

The pilot reported that the airplane was loaded with powdered sulfur, and that while en route to the application area, he heard a popping sound, followed by a loss of engine power. He attempted to force land the airplane in a field, and during the landing roll, the airplane struck a railroad track. The collision breached the hopper, and the airplane came to rest intact about 60 feet beyond the initial impact point.

NTSB Identification: *WPR11CA281* Date: June 23, 2011 Location: Havre, MT Aircraft: PIPER PA-36-285 Injuries: 1 Uninjured.

The pilot had just picked up a load for aerial spraying operations and was taking off on a road. He accelerated to approximately 72 mph with 15 degrees

of flaps. The airplane lifted off the road momentarily before settling back down onto the ground. He then lost directional control of the airplane and exited to the left of the road, colliding with a fence.

The airplane came to rest approximately 15 to 20 feet from the road. The pilot reported that he thought he may have hit the wake of a second airplane that was working in the area and had taken off before him three minutes prior to his takeoff attempt. According to a weather reporting facility located 10 miles to the south, the wind at the time of the accident was calm and the temperature was 25 degrees Celsius. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe and engine that would have precluded normal flight.

On June 28, 2011 a Cessna A188A impacted the ground and burned after takeoff from a private airstrip near Estelline, South Dakota. The pilot received minor injuries. The airplane sustained substantial damage due to the impact and the postimpact fire. Visual flight rules (VFR) conditions prevailed for the flight which was not operating on a flight plan. The local flight was originating at the time of the accident.

New requirements for minibulks Changes in EPA regulations taking effect for refilling minibulks. The new requirements for minibulks filled after August 16, 2011 include the following: Containers must: Comply with at least DOT Packing Group III standards that EPA adopted; Be durably marked with a serial number/identifying code; Have a tamperevident device or a one-way valve or both on each opening other than a vent; and be listed on the registrant’s description of acceptable containers.

Dealers must: identify the pesticide previously in the container; visually inspect the container to ensure that it is in good shape; clean the container if necessary; clean the container between uses unless all tamper-evident devices and one-way valves are intact and the container is filled with the same or a very similar product and ensure the container is properly labeled.

If growers are unsure if a minibulk complies with the above requirements they should contact their local dealer.

menu, the first step is to access the Settings editor by selecting “Application” from the Main Menu. At the top of the screen you will now see a toolbar. By selecting Settings, a drop down menu will appear. Select the “Keys” option.

The Guia console provides controls or functions appropriate for each application mode when spraying an old area or generating a new area. The first column displayed will show the functions for . The second option shows the ,the third for functions for . Each row has and the fourth for one function for each key and makes a Control Set or Control Menu. It is highly recommended to edit the Control Menus in the way that is the most convenient for the operator to do his or her job.

Control Menus for “Old Area” are for Grid or Spray mode. Control Menus should have the functions that you will use. Remove functions that you don’t need.

The Guia console contains an extensive list of functions available to the operator such as ZoomIn+ and ZoomOut- which increases or decreases the screen scale.

The Left/Right/Up/Down function will shift the map in the specified direction. Info turns on/off information panel for time, coordinates, etc.

Function PrevLL shifts the Locked Line to the previous grid line. NextLL shifts the Locked Line to the next grid line. ClstLine will shift the Locked Line to the unsprayed line closest to vehicle. With the NewGrid function, you can change grid line direction by spraying a new AB line or entering two points.

The function NewArea generates new area without leaving the current area and NextArea switches to the next area for guidance.

WayPMode will take you to Waypoint mode and MapMode to Map mode.

TankFull resets the tank gauge displayed

at the top right corner of screen. This is done when you fill up the spray tank.

The function To-Cntr is used to change to Contour Guidance and To-Grid for changing to Grid Line Guidance.

There are several different spray patterns available with the Guia system including Split, Skip, Squeeze and RaceTrk (Race Track).

ChgRTK changes the Race Track number and B&F is used for selecting spray pattern starting from the current locked line.

Functions AWayPnt enters a new waypoint for a new area and XWayPnt enters a new cross-country waypoint. With ObstPnt you can enter a new obstacle point (tower, high dead tree, etc.).

Function Dim+ would be used to change the Brightness %. If you wish to decrease the intensity, you would use Dim-.

Used only with the FlightMaster system, CalcDrif calculates spray drift and MetDisp turns on/off the Meteorological Data Display.

AreaLeft function allows you to enter point A for area that will be generated on the left side of the AB line. AreaRght enters point A for an area that will be generated on the right side of the AB line. NextPnt enters point A or B manually, not by spray on/off.

Control Menus for “New Area – Split” are used when you have to generate a new area by entering three points. Control menus for “New Area – Mark” are used when you have to generate a new area by entering thre or more points to form a polygon depicting the boundary of a spray area.

In the “New Area – Mark” Control Menu, NextPnt allows you to enter a point/corner of a spray area or exclusion zone. With New$Zone you can enter the first point of a new spray area. This is done after the boundary of the first spray area is completed. This function is for multiple area generation.

NewXZone allows you to enter the first point of new exclusion zone (XCL). The next point or corner of XCL must be entered by NextPnt. Function EndArea finishes area generation and continues in Spray mode.

Control menus for “New Area – Contour” are used when you generate a new area by spraying along the boundary of the spray area. In this menu, NextPnt is used to enter

a point or corner of a spray area manually.

Control menus for “Waypoint” are used when you work in the Waypoint mode and PntGuide guides you to fly from aircraft to the destination waypoint.

SegGuide guides you to fly from one waypoint to the next along the segment or line formed by the two waypoints.

The function PrevWPnt selects Previous Waypoint for destination when using Point Guidance and NextWPnt for destination when using Point Guidance.

Select SprMode to go into Spray mode.

Control menus for “Map” are used when you work in the Map mode. The Map mode is used to view the spray area(s), exclusion zones, grid lines, locked line and spray data.

Function BestHead calculates best heading and generates grid lines based on this heading. NextHead calculates the heading of the next side of spray area and generates grid lines based on this heading.

SelectLL or SetLL selects Locked Line and goes to Spray mode. Do this when you see the locked line at the right location.

Practical method for calibration of aircraft for accurate seed distribution

by Alan McCracken Many operators have an opportunity to increase their business by entering the aerial seeding market, however, practically all face the challenge in selection of equipment for the aircraft and how to quickly and economically conduct a calibration test to ensure uniform results. On numerous occasions, I have arrived in remote areas of the world and found it necessary to prepare the aircraft equipment and to conduct a calibration test without having access to any high tech equipment. For this reason I have decided to prepare a simple guide that any pilot can use to prepare his aircraft within a couple of hours to make a uniform distribution of any type of seeds or fine granular product.

Equipment necessary to conduct the trials: • Pocket-sized precision balance to accurately weigh 1000 seeds.[eg.

Tanita digital scale model 1479V, see photograph]] • Field balance to accurately weigh up to 50 kgs (110 pounds) of seeds in order

Using a plastic cover to collect the entire swath

to determine the flow rate of seeds or insecticide granules being discharged by the aircraft.

• 24 wood plates, preferably white wood pieces cut equally in size 0.125 sq mts. (11 cm X 11 cm) and smear each piece of wood with a thick coating of clear tractor grease.

• 24 five-gallon buckets.

Preferably prepare 24 pieces of wood to be placed at intervals of one (1) meter on top of empty buckets. The reason to place on top of empty buckets is to ensure that seeds or granules do not bounce from the ground into the grease on the wood. The total area of these 24 pieces represents a collection area of three square meters [see photographs].

Extend a sheet of plastic across the flight path for a visual observation of the seed distribution and swath width.

Measure the weight of 1000 seeds of each species to be distributed, using the pocket electronic balance. Example millet seed has a weight of approximately114 seeds/gram.

Check that the air inlet to the hopper

is adjusted for maximum airflow, in some aircraft the air inlet tube must be directed forwards to ensure adequate airflow into the hopper.

Determine the flow rate of the seeds coming out of the aircraft hopper and adjust accordingly to obtain the desired flow rate. It will be necessary to load at least 100 kgs (220 pounds) of seeds into the hopper for this test. In many cases, it will be necessary to adjust the discharge gate to obtain a uniform flow rate of seed across the complete gate opening.

In addition, check that the rubber seal around the gate is in good condition and parallel, otherwise too much seed may be flowing from one side. Example: An Ipanema flying at 110 mph x 20 meter swath = 5.9 hectares/minute. To apply 6 kgs/sorghum seeds per hectare, this means a required flow rate of 5.9 hectares/minute x 7 kgs/minute = 41.3 kgs/minute. With a seed weight of 38 seeds/gram this corresponds to only 19 seeds/mt. An effective swath width for the Ipanema with a Transland Swathmaster is +/- 18 meters.

In practice, there will be a variation of +/- 10% with the aircraft static, however, in flight the flow rate becomes more consistent and the rate needs to be confirmed after the initial calibration.

Adjust the spreader on the aircraft.

Some types of spreaders have adjustable vanes on the air inlet. If the swath width is not uniform, it is sometimes possible to adjust the vanes to remove a peak in the middle or to smooth out the distribution graph of the swath.

Field experience has proven that the Transland Swathmaster design produces the widest and most uniform swath for the distribution of small seeds and insecticide granules at low rates and this type of spreader has no adjustments.

Load the aircraft with sufficient seeds/granules for 5-10 passes over the flight line into the wind. The reason for numerous passes is two-fold; with a single pass there will be very few seeds and also to be able to produce an average of several swaths. A recommended flying height is 10 meters (30 feet) above the buckets.

Observe the uniformity of the distribution of the seeds on the plastic cover and count the number of seeds or granules collected on each plaque of wood. With this information, it is easy to produce a graph of the seed distribution across the swath. In addition, these numbers can be used to calculate the rate of seeds applied per hectare based on the numbers of seeds per kilogram.

Aircraft Tracking: When all aircraft are working together or in a nearby region

up to 30 km (20 miles) Guia will show the positions of other aircraft on the screen during flight. A local network is formed by using radio modems. If two or more aircraft are working on the same field, or area, the spray data from the other aircraft will show the total sprayed coverage. Data from other aircraft will not be saved to a hard disk. So, when exiting the area, the tracking data will be gone.

Flow Controller: With a smaller flow valve and more sensitive flow sensor, the Ag-Nav flow controller can work well with very small flow rates, 0.5 to 6.5 L/ min or 0.0625 to 1.625 GPM. The target flow rate can be defined precisely with

Oil Chiller™ filter heat sink lowers engine temps up to 30ºF Airwolf’s simple to install unit requires no STC; passive design works on all aviation oil filters.

Middlefield, Ohio and Oshkosh, Wisconsin – Airwolf Filter Corp. has recently developed an oil filter heat sink as a solution to engine oil overheating. The simple design fits on all aviation filters and requires no STC. It comprises a fan-array of anodized aluminium fins surrounding the filter canister, and is held in place by expandable hose clamps.

“Oil Chiller was designed as an inexpensive yet effective method of reducing engine oil temperatures,” said Airwolf’s Jonny Quest. “It meets that promise.”

The Oil Chiller is modelled after multi-finned heat sinks found in computer central processing units; it was designed to increase significantly

the effective surface area of the oil filter to increase heat dissipation from the canister.

Airwolf’s new oil cooler was tested in a Bellanca Scout glider-tow aircraft, whose engine operating temperatures were commonly recorded as high as 250 F, enough to ‘cook’ the hardworking engine. The installed combination of the Oil Chiller, and Airwolf’s firewallmounted oil filter system, resulted in an improved and optimal oil temperature of 185˚ F. The product developer had only

expected a drop of 20˚ F attributed to the use of the remote filter kit and a further drop of 10˚ F with the use of the Oil Chiller, yet the aircraft operators consistently observe a decrease of 60˚ F. “We’re more than pleased with our results,” Quest added.

“There is a definite demand for positive innovations to reduce oil temperatures,” added Quest “Our Oil Chiller is an economic, simple way to accomplish this.”

Booms too low can produce a poor spray pattern

by Alan Corr NE Extension Educator Analista certificado de SAFE Any Nebraska crop duster knows how difficult it was this spring to get much of anything done. Between the wind, rain and cold, very few days were available for spraying or pattern testing. Despite the weather, the Nebraska Operation SAFE finally got on track with 33 planes making nearly 200 passes over the string prior to July 1 and a number of planes are still yet to be tested.

There was a higher number of planes that had to be retested this year due to boom location, nozzle and other equipment problems. In fact, there have been instances where I had to make a return trip for testing before the issue could be resolved; but I guess that is what Operation SAFE is all about.

I did find that nozzles can be located

too far below the wing. If they are located much lower than 26 inches under the wing on a turbine aircraft, the spray seems to merely fall to the ground resulting in a narrow and uneven swath.

An AT502 only pattern tested to just over 60 feet with the nozzles located 33 inches below the trailing edge of the wing. When the nozzles were raised to 26 inches below the wing, it pattern tested out very nicely at 75 feet.

I did have the opportunity to look at fungicide, crop oil and anti-drift additives’ affect on droplet size, but had to postpone most of the work until after fungicide season since so few days have been calm enough for pattern testing. I will likely seek out volunteers following fungicide season to not only look at product affect on droplet size, but evaporative spray loss as temperature increases and some crosswind testing

to determine how far downwind the majority of the product moves at different spray heights and various wind speeds.

I truly appreciate BASF’s involvement and sponsorship of Operation SAFE in Nebraska. The number of aircraft

tested and retested in Nebraska during the past three years is enormous. I also appreciate the interest of NATA members in pattern testing their aircraft to make sure they do an efficient and effective job for their clientele.
