Years ago, I asked Chuck Stone for advice about a fuel leak on a Thrush. “Bill, if hasn’t caught fire by now, it probably won’t.” Turned out to be good advice.

I’ve attended a couple of spray clinics in the past few weeks. It is always good to see old friends and meet new ones. Since the first clinics started over 15 years ago, there has been a notable change with more turbine-powered aircraft and less Ag-Cats, Pawnees and Cessnas on the scene. I suppose this is a sign of the times. Notably at the clinic in Steele, Missouri were the shiny new AT-802s.

New paint sure looks good and I hope it is an indication of prosperity.

However, you don’t have to have a new turbine powered aircraft to be a successful and professional flying service. Albeit, who wouldn’t want one?

I believe operating a high-end use piece of equipment falls into two categories; either use it until it is completely worn out, or trade it on a frequent schedule, maybe every two or three years while most components are either in warranty or won’t give you a problem.

I know an operator in Mississippi that has been trading his AT-502 every two years for a new one with a great degree of success. He performs one annual that is basically an inspection and rarely has to budget for parts and maintenance during the two years he owns the aircraft. He logs about 1,000 hours on the aircraft and receives a premium for it on trade.

New paint and deice runoff

On the other side of the coin, I have seen operators do very well by keeping their aircraft well maintained and when needed, overhauling major components, such as the engine and prop, keeping up with the ADs, new paint, etc. Their maintenance expenses are considerably higher, but their depreciation and other related costs, like insurance, are less.

Each operator has to decide which avenue is the best for his operation. I know that during good times, a business needs to upgrade its equipment so that the bad times are easier to navigate.

Changing the subject, I was reading an article not long ago where the U.S. EPA was proposing new rules that would affect the handling of the wastewater for deicing aircraft. Imagine that! I have often wondered how long it would be when deicing runoff concerns would impact the airlines and others.

If an ag operator was to allow runoff of any kind and it was viewed by the public like when an airliner is hosed with deice fluid, the repercussion would be heard throughout our industry.

What is amazing is the proposed rules would only affect airports with more than 10,000 annual aircraft departures and 1,000 annual jet departures, requiring a re-capture of 60% of the fluid,

rather than allowing it to drain off the pavement, where it can end up in nearby water systems.

Gosh, I suppose the other 40% has no affect on the water systems, huh? What about airports that have less than the 10,000/1,000 departures? Is the affect any different for half that many?

I know that in our industry even a one-aircraft loading area is subject to as much scrutiny as a fleet would be.

Either the runoff is a problem or it is not.

I can’t visualize “part of a runoff” being any less of an issue than all of the runoff.

Maybe it’s some kind of dilution-thing calculation.

It just goes to show that the government does not work in an equal and fair manner. But, you already knew that. This only proves it. The airlines are already bankrupt for the most part, no sense in the EPA putting them out of business. That’d be a hardship on the flying population (read voters). I wonder if skyrocketing prices and limited availability of food and fiber would be a consideration for the EPA? For my two cents’ worth, I think runoff should be contained, both for our industry and the rest of aviation. For agaviation, runoff looks bad, smells and is an all-around detriment to a professional operation. I know it is a problem and rainfall only exacerbates the issue, unless loading under cover. If you are doing any long range budgetary planning, you might need to figure in a covered loading pad, or one that is portable. Actually, covered loading areas are pretty nice.

I have a contact in Argentina that could potentially lead to a seat in the near future. I’ve been researching to figure out how licenses convert, work visas, etc., but unfortunately haven’t come up with anything concrete yet. I talked to Rick Reed who said you would be a good guy to talk with. What can you tell me about spraying down there? Do you know anything about the process of converting a commercial license or even a pesticide license? It may be more of a hassle than anything, but I thought I would investigate it a bit

The odds of you landing a job in Argentina are probably close to nil. It would be similar to an Argentine trying to land a seat in the U.S. You’ll need a sponsor, a work visa and be able to speak the language, Argentine pilot’s license/medical, at a minimum, maybe other requirements that I am not aware of. It appears you have a contact, hopefully someone you know well and can trust. There are those without scruples in Argentina, like in the U.S. I know of a Canadian (Nacho Aguero) that has managed to fly both in Canada and Argentina, but he holds two citizenships. I’ll copy him our email and he may respond to you about your questions better than me.

Another item is there is no shortage of good ag-pilots in Argentina. But, if your contact has a viable reason to bring you in, then that may not matter.

Basically, your efforts hinge on your sponsor and your willingness to jump through the hoops.—Bill

update How are you? Here the spray season is easy now, but we haad a strong season throughout the country. Unfortunately, a lot of airplanes were broken and three pilots killed.

Thanks for a good paper. I saw the pictures that my brother Jim sent in last month of our dad’s old Cubs, Super Cubs and Stearmans. Thanks for publishing them. I met the folks in IA who now own and restored the

old Stearman that was the one Daddy started with, but I didn’t get up to see it as I’d hoped to. Maybe this year.

I’ve owned four different Stearmans over the years, but I’m currently flying the old J-3 that I learned to fly in and a recently restored Fairchild PT-26.

Jim and I gave up on ever restoring one of the old PA-25 Pawnees that fell between the Stearman and Thrush eras, so we ended up giving one away to a fellow over in North Carolina who wants to convert it to a two-holer fun plane. We pulled the engine and prop and gave him everything from the firewall back. It has some damage in the cockpit area from where a hangar fell in on it during a storm, but the rest of it was in good shape, having been hangared every night of its now 50 year old life. I hope he gets it going again. I’ll keep you posted.

Actually, it would be an exercise of wasted time. In almost all cases, the helicopter is used in a specific environment that the fixed wing can’t effectively work. It could be sensitive areas, or very small fields, etc. There is no doubt that overall the helicopter costs more to operate per acre, except in these speciality applications. Otherwise, everyone would be using helicopters. It’s

all about money, my friend. Of course, I’m sure there are rotorheads out there that would disagree.

As for the fishing, that sounds like a wonderful idea, one that I may take you up on! Did your dad buy that boat he was looking at many years ago? Is it the one we’ll go fishing on? Hope it is long enough to handle the seas and has two motors!—Bill

I was unable to submit a photo through your newspaper web page; Piper, Super Pawnee PA-25 was taken on the skirts of Chaparrastique Volcano at the operation airfield back in 197980 cotton seasson. The location is at Departamento of San Miguel, El Salvador, Central America. Pista “El Tambor” (airstrip).

That year a civil war broke out in El Salvador that lasted 12 years and put an end to the agricultural industry.

Afterwards, I moved on to the airlines, it never crossed my mind to finish my carrer as pilot in command of a B-737. So, instead I’ve been trying for the past three years to get back to where I left my heart so long ago in ag aviation. I’ve been checking on

and isn’t comfortable flying night time nor is he ILS qualified, he’s a daytime close to the ground kind of guy.

He’s interested in enrolling in Billy Howell’s AgFlight, Inc program in Bainbridge, GA, but needs $17K for the school/program, all up front, cash.

No bank will loan him the cash, so my wife and I have felt led to step forward and offer the needed funds, which Vern wants to pay back. (I am a retired Navy and Marine Corps aviator, 28 years).

The only two individuals I knew of in the ag flying business are in CA and FL, and both of them painted a rather dismal picture of the current situation. Bill Howell says you would be the person to convince me that it is a sound investment. After reviewing your website, I would have to agree; you seem to be the outfit that “has the pulse” on the agricultural flying business.

I don’t want to take a lot of your time to ‘chew the cud’ and make me feel “comfortable” about the investment; all I want to know is whether you think this would be a sound investment for a died-in-the-wool world class bush pilot, who is dying of boredom right now. If you say it’s a go,

I’ll go with it. I would be happy to pay you for your time, right down to the minute.

There are regions of the country where it may be suffering, but overall it is in the best possible situation. Plus, there is and will continue to be a shortage in replacement pilots as pilots in our industry median age increases, close to 60, now.

To further prove my point, Air Tractor and Thrush Aircraft are sold out for production slots through most of the year. It is almost impossible to find a reasonably priced, good, used agaircraft due to demand.

More new chemicals are coming to the market that require aerial applications.

Attending ag-school does not make a pilot an ag-pilot, but it will help him get his foot in the door and it will also provide an opportunity for him to determine if this is really what he wants and can do. In the big picture, you can’t get any kind of degree, or trade certification for $17,000 in tuition that would potentially provide a career where one can make a decent living and do something they love. So, the $17k is a bargain. Without the love of the business, it won’t work, because the job has hard, long hours.

Controlling droplet sizes with adjuvants in Bolivia

by Alan McCracken Zacarias Valle is one of many Brazilians who immigrated to Bolivia with the intention to produce high quality soybeans, corn and sunflowers in the region of Santa Cruz. He is constantly searching for new technologies that will enable him to increase his productivity and reduce his input costs. In addition to farming, he is also a partner in a chemical distribution business, Agropoint, which has been established to service a group of farmers. He views agricultural aviation as an essential tool and plans to increase his utilization of aerial application for reasons of speed of application and to avoid mechanical damage to his high yielding soybeans.

This report deals with a number of tests made with different products to enhance the quality of application of fungicides and insecticides on his farms utilizing Piper Pawnees owned and operated by Verly Valdez Ruiz. Verly is very involved with aircraft and also flies a Piper Cub for pleasure. He owns and operates Trabajo Aereo Agricolas, based near Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Aerial application in Bolivia: There has been significant growth in the use of aircraft during the past few seasons. Increased areas of soybeans and the decision by a number of farmers, including Mr. Zacarias, not to use ground machines after the rows close over has contributed to the increase of use. The majority of the aircraft in operation are Piper Pawnees and Cessna 188s including a total of eight imported from Colombia last year. In addition, there are some Brazilian made Ipanemas and several Grumman AgCats plus a few Krucks with radial engines. Most of the spraying is being done between 10-20 liters/hectare [1.0- 2.0 gpa], however several operators are now reducing their spray volumes and improving their technology to improve the quality of application. Recently, some farming groups have taken the initiative to conduct training programs for pilots/ agronomists and farmers to make them more aware of the importance of nozzle selection, droplet size and accurate calibration.

Trials made with a Piper Pawnee 235 fitted with 10 Turboaero rotary atomizers: The Turboaero rotary atomizers performed well in these tests for applications at low volume producing an excellent, narrow droplet spectrum, however with a significant number of very small droplets. This should not present problems for the application of insecticides and fungicides, however it would present a high risk of drift with herbicides. Because of the production of very small droplets, I strongly recommended to Mr. Zacarias to not use the rotary atomizers as configured for the application of herbicides.

After evaluating several spray additives, I concluded that it was feasible to conduct a good application even under severe conditions of high temperature and low humidity, utilizing Harrier, an organosilicone adjuvant and Maxidrop, a drift reduction agent, that reduced the evaporation of the spray droplets, while also helping to maintain a narrow droplet spectrum. However, for extreme climatic conditions, it is preferable to add 10-20% emulsified oil in the spray solution. Participating in the field evaluations were Lisandro Falzone and Gustavo Ghirardi, owners of Arrows, SRL based in Argentina, who kindly provided the Harrier and Maxi Drop products.

The Harrier organosilicone has the effect of preventing the production of very large droplets with Maxi Drop working as the drift reduction agent. In reverse the Maxi Drop minimizes the production of extremely small droplets generally caused by an organosilicone product. The end result is that 98% of the droplets collected were within 100-250 microns, which is considered near perfect for low volume applications of fungicides and insecticides.

In addition, I evaluated a conventional spray boom equipped with 8002 flat fan nozzles, positioned inclined down at 90 degrees to obtain maximum breakup of the droplets as an option for the application of fungicides on soybeans.

Ron Deck inducted into North Dakota’s Aviation Hall of Fame The North Dakota Aviation Council founded the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1997 to honor outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the aviation industry. Individuals have been selected on the basis of: major achievements in aviation in North Dakota, significant contributions to the development of others in aviation in North Dakota, special service to the state of North Dakota in aviation activities, activities that bring credit to North Dakota aviation, either nationally or internationally, significant contributions to the local community or the state of North Dakota that are not related to aviation (i.e.: service clubs, church related, political, etc.).

This year, Ron Deck was one of two individuals inducted in the North Dakota Hall of Fame. Ron, who lives in Hillsboro, North Dakota, grew up on a family farm near Harvey. While on a tour of duty in the Navy, he began taking flying lessons at a local airport. He earned his private pilot’s

license, soon followed by his commercial license and instrument rating. He later added ratings as a flight instructor, multiengine airplane, helicopters and ground instructor. Ron started Deck Flying Service in 19790 and has been active in aerial application ever since. Ron has participated in many aspects of aviation and excelled and enjoyed himself in all of them.

His contributions to the local community, North Dakota and across the country are many and varied. They include: His company, Sky Tractor Supply Company, LLC, promoted GPS as an important technology in aerial application and has provided for many people for 40 years.

He introduced many into aviation through his flight instruction, mechanical training, sky diving flights or as his employee. Ron has flown planes and rebuilt planes and engines, providing the spark to encourage many of the people in aviation today. Ron’s company has developed a reputation as a national supplier of aerial application parts

with good customer support and training, helping North Dakota become a leader in new technologies. Ron’s successes have been featured in many publications, including National Geographic magazine.

He was president of the Red River Valley Aerial Applicators Association before it merged with the state’s North Dakota Aerial Applicators Association. He was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Pesticide Applicator of the Year in 1991 by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture. He served as president and on the board of directors for the National Aerial Applicators Association and was their first recipient of the Outstanding Aerial Applicators Award. He has been recognized by the NAAA numerous times, including the prestigious Falcon Award, the Allied Industry Individual Award and the Outstanding Service Award.

Ron has attended and exhibited at the annual NAAA convention for 38 straight years. He supports local businesses, school

events, the 4-H club, tractor and horse pulls and the championship old pro softball team, the Sky Tractors. During the 1997 spring flood, Ron was asked to fly schoolteachers over the flooded Red River, saving them from driving more than 100 miles around the flooded areas to get to work. In 2003, Ron was honored by the American Red Cross’ Everyday Heroes program, receiving the Good Samaritan Hero Award after saving a neighbor’s farmhouse from fire by dropping a load of water from his airplane before the fire department arrived.

Ron is a well-respected employer, skilled aviator, an astute businessman, is an inspiration to many who have had the privilege of knowing him and is the creator of the award-winning “Dakota Chili” in a fundraiser in 1995. The North Dakota Hall of Fame thanks Ron for his contributions to the state and to aviation.

The turbine transition experience

by Walt Jazun Recently, I had a chance, or better said, the privilege to complete the Flying Tiger Aviation Turbine Transition Course conducted by Robert McCurdy in northern Louisiana, USA flying a 400-gallon dual cockpit turbine Thrush equipped with the P&WC PT6A-15AG 680 SHP engine, guided by the Satloc M3 GPS. By way of introduction, I am not an ag-pilot. My professional career got a start flying corporate airplanes and in the last 21 years as an airline pilot, 12 of those as a captain on various aircraft (B727, B737, A319/320 Airbus), where I constantly receive training, line checks, inspections, etc. as part of the job description. Throughout my career I’ve always welcomed the opportunity to receive training and the chance to learn something new.

My association with ag-aviation is through friends and acquaintances in the industry, both in the USA and Latin America, as well as representing AgAir Update Latinoamerica in South America.

Having flown and instructed in turboprops, I waited with anticipation the opportunity to attend the turbine transition course as a student and to evaluate it.

I had to recognize my apprehension to fly a 400-gallon ag-plane, since the largest ag-plane I had ever flown was a couple of ferry flights in a Piper Pawnee.

My apprehension dissipated quickly by observing the quality of instruction Robert McCurdy conducted during the course. Robert is a retired US Navy pilot with more than four decades of ag-flying.

He is blessed with the gift of patience and ability to explain things the simplest possible way.

The course consists of five segments or learning blocks where each block builds upon the previous one in a natural sequence. Each segment starts with a thorough briefing, followed by a flight of approximately an hour and a debrief.

One of the important aspects of this course is that on each flight, the student gets to conduct a turbine start, taxi, preflight checks, flight operation,

landing, reverse, beta mode operation and shutdown, following manufacturer SOP checklists, which establishes good operational habit patterns and exposes the pilot to the complete range of turbine engine operation.

The flight portion of the training starts with air work and familiarization with the aircraft, Dutch rolls, power on and off stalls, steep turns, crosswind ops and airport pattern work.

Gradually, more challenging

maneuvers are added, such as aggravated stalls at a safe altitude with the intention to show the student the consequences of sloppy flying a loaded airplane close to the ground.

Simulated power failures and multiple landings reinforce the training. After these are accomplished, the course gives an intro to ag-flying and operation of the Satloc M3.

The training continues with the airplane loaded to 330 gallons with emergency dumps of the remaining load after spraying.

The phone rings. The field man is calling to see if you flew the field he set up.

“Yup, sure did, you say. His reply is a bit terse, “Then why am I seeing bugs eating away at my lettuce?”

A bad start to what could be the last conversation you might have with this particular rep.

Field edges are like landings. The entire flight can go without a hitch.

Professionally executed down to the last moment of the approach, but bounce the landing and you’re no better than that crazy guy who crashes the shopping carts around in the grocery store parking lot.

I have learned some very hard lessons on flying the edges. Flying a 60-foot swath, a quarter-mile run will net you almost two acres of covered ground.

It doesn’t sound like much, but when lettuce is drawing upwards of $30,000

Getting the edges an acre, it can get pretty serious really quick.

If a pilot misses an edge or leaves a streak, then whatever creature, insect or fungus, inhabits that particular area will continue to feed and grow. It may take the field rep or grower a while to get back and check the results of your work. Two or three days is a long time in the life of a bug and the bigger they are the more they eat, the more babies they make and the harder they are to kill.

If a field or an infestation gets out of hand, the damage can cost thousands of dollars and lead to a field that stands out like a billboard as a crop protection job that just wasn’t done well. Trust me, you will hear about it for a long time. Not only will you bear the burden of seeing a professional failure etched in what

should have been a clean, neat produce field, you may also be responsible for seeing a good account going down the road to the next operator. At the least, you will find yourself making an extra trip to clean up what was missed, costing the price of extra chemical, unnecessary fuel and time on your machine.

We have relatively small fields here in southern Arizona, forty acres is the average block and most have wires on one side and some all around. We have a couple of fields that we work that look as if the lettuce is merely a secondary crop in a wire field. It seems there are bumper crops of wires every year. I’m not to sure if that is true about the lettuce.

Making sure the edges are covered well can be a challenge and downright

difficult and unsafe under certain circumstances, particularly at night. Having a field spotter can be invaluable. He can tell you what the wind is doing and can confirm whether or not you got an edge covered. The smoker is a great help too, and yes you can use your smoker at night. You just have to be quick to come around and catch the puff of smoke in the “fuzzy edges” of your night working lights. Most likely you will see the shadow more than the smoke itself.

You probably won’t detect the actual drift with the smoker, but you can extrapolate the difference in reference to where you were coming out of the field and where the smoke is when you do see it.

Depending on the drift potential, covering the edges can be an exercise in Kentucky windage. A pilot may have to fly outside the field, over the road or outside the wires, varying his height depending on the density of the material and the velocity of the wind in order to cause the spray to land onto the target area. It takes practice, experience and a certain amount of intuition to get it right.

I always check for cross wires and guy wires before making my pass.

All this is well and good, but what about herbicide applications? When applying herbicides, the concern is more about off-target drift and a good, even application across the field.

Edges sometimes need to be left off or addressed later when the wind is right.

It would be an extreme risk to spray at power line height with a defoliant. It wouldn’t do anybody a whole lot of good to get that edge cleaned up if you burn down the field next door.

Of course, we all do whatever it takes to make sure we do a good job. You don’t have to be Bob Hoover, but agpilots can be quite creative in how they fly in order to get the job done. Safety of man and machine must always be the forethought in everything we do. Common sense dictates that there are times when an edge or a corner is just simply not doable. If that’s the case, then so be it.

A pilot can treat the crop as well as the grower planted it. Make sure the edges that can be covered are covered. This will go a long way toward establishing or maintaining a pilot’s reputation and will provide the satisfaction of seeing clean, neat rows as a tribute to a crop protection job well done.

Is 2010 the year for an aircraft purchase?

How is the current economy influencing your business? Is an aircraft purchase decision being considered this year?

What are some common sense considerations affecting an aircraft purchase decision?

Bonus depreciation may be extended in 2010, but that doesn’t guaranteed it will benefit you. Profits are down for many companies. Lower profits may not allow you to benefit from this extra depreciation. The difference between the bonus depreciation and normal depreciation deserves comment. The total amount that can be depreciated using either method is the purchase price plus sales tax for an outright purchase or the cash difference paid plus the sales tax for a trade transaction. The

difference between the bonus and normal depreciation is the year in which the depreciation is deducted as an expense. To evaluate the financial difference, prepare an after-tax cash flow for the next five years using both the bonus and normal depreciation methods.

Then use Net Present Value (NPV) to compute the value in today’s dollars of each depreciation method. You might be surprised with the results of this calculation.

The aircraft depreciation remaining on a current aircraft impacts the cash flow for the continued operation of that aircraft. The depreciation amount claimed each year is a non-cash expense that reduces the tax bill and effectively produces cash. Think of the tax savings

from depreciation as an interest free loan from the government for as long as the aircraft is owned. If you are near the end of your depreciation, then evaluate a replacement aircraft. If the replacement aircraft is a new aircraft, then it might qualify for the bonus depreciation. The delivery date is one of the key items affecting bonus depreciation. Taxes are always one of the factors affecting a purchase decision, so visit your tax counsel and advisor to confirm the aftertax financial impact of a purchase this year.

Used aircraft values are depressed.

The resale value has a big impact on total ownership cost. New aircraft offer greater reliability and lower operating cost than used aircraft. If you’re trading

a used aircraft for a new aircraft, the trade value offered might be a deciding factor in the purchase decision. Will the resale value of the used aircraft increase significantly in the future? Purchasing the new aircraft at a significant discount might change the resale percentage, but be careful about jumping to conclusions.

Purchasing or trading for a used aircraft is an alternative since used aircraft values are depressed. Due to the depressed market today, the used aircraft could actually appreciate in value. Since bonus depreciation applies to capital improvements on any type (new or used) aircraft, making improvements to your current aircraft or purchasing a fixer-upper might be a better financial option. Common sense tells us that as the aircraft ages it will be less reliable and cost more to maintain.

Has your aircraft reliability or availability changed significantly? How much longer will your current aircraft be up-to-date with technology? Will your aircraft maintenance cost increase significantly?

Those making a purchase decision to order a new aircraft that delivered in the years that the economy was strong enjoyed the greatest financial reward.

Preparing for the return of a hard market The article in the March 2010 issue of AgAir Update entitled Aviation Insurance Market Update for 2010, described the fact that there are several indications the current soft market that began in 2006 may have bottomed out, signaling a potential return to the hard markets seen in 2001 -2005.

A “Hard Market” is generally characterized by fewer markets bidding on a particular risk resulting in fewer options, increased rates and premiums, decreased limits of liability, fewer ancillary coverages, in addition to more stringent underwriting requirements on training with less flexibility for the

operational managers.

For most industry experts, the question isn’t “if”, but “when” and “how” the aviation insurance industry will return to a hard market. The other questions are, “how hard and how fast?”

There isn’t a single underwriter who wouldn’t like to see premiums rise. The consensus is that there are two major factors keeping premium rates down—the poor economy which has shrunk demand for insurance and too much capacity for the market conditions.

The “Big Bang” theory is that a catastrophic event with a huge potential liability settlement will shock

the insurance companies into turning on a dime, drastically raising rates and severely tightening underwriting requirements.

A more pragmatic scenario might be characterized by an improving economy combined with a reduction in capacity through merging aviation underwriting companies or further departures from some or all markets by some insurance companies. Rate increases and underwriting restrictions would be more gradual and implemented selectivity.

Either way, every insurance buyer needs to consider the potential impact on their budget and what they can do to

mitigate potential cost increases.

Understanding how insurance quotes are generated can help.

Aviation insurance is not automated like auto insurance. Except for light pleasure and business aircraft, most aviation quotes are generated manually by an underwriter using a rate book base on a “best guess according to historical experience” of that insurance company. A scale of rates is created for each type of risk that the underwriters must follow. The goal is making an underwriting profit.

The underwriters manually apply these rates to generate the quote based on the information sent to them by the broker.

One of the keys to getting the best quote is to help the underwriter get a better understanding of the risk they are rating and to find a comfort zone which will allow their pen to move down the scale instead of up.

• The quality of the submission by the broker is usually the only thing the underwriter has to determine the quality of the risk.

There are two parts that make up a quality submission—an accurate, full description of the risk and the appearance and organization of the submission itself.

Pilot history forms Pilots hate forms, especially pilot history forms. The hardest job a broker has may be getting a properly completed, legible, and signed pilot history form from the insured’s pilot(s). From a common sense point of view, if the insured is asking the underwriter to give them the best rate, and the only thing the underwriter has to go on is information presented on paper, doesn’t it make sense to put the most complete information in the neatest, most organized way, especially if the pilot is short on some experience?

If some pilots are relatively inexperienced, is there a training program in place which allows them to gain the experience they need while addressing operational needs and the concerns of the underwriter?

Ag turns and gray eagles Recently, the last remaining AT-503 in this country was brought to me by the new owner who wanted some ag flight instructions in it and a turbine transition, which would also involve flying in our (Flying Tiger Aviation) dual-control, Turbo Thrush. I say “the last remaining AT503,” because that’s what I was told, but that may not be true at all. For those of you who are saying, “What the heck is an AT-503?” It is a tandem seat, dual control AT-502, one of only four ever built.

I bring all of this up, because as I was reading the POH for this airplane, I read a page that included the following: Flaps may be used as a turning aid providing small deflections are used (5 to 8 degrees).

The usual method of using flaps is to

make the pull-up and initial bank with flaps retracted. As the aircraft is being banked to turn back into the field, touch the flap switch briefly, and let off a little back pressure on the stick, as the flaps cause a slight pitch up tendency.

Continue the turn and as you line up for your next pass, retract the flaps.

I mention this because I have had several of my turbine transition students say they had not been using this method of turning in their previous ag flying and I have also observed other ag pilots not using this method. Truth of the matter is, I am very happy to see this turning technique in a publication by Air Tractor, for whom I have a world of respect.

in the method mentioned in the POH is that I usually use full flaps in the turns, especially when I am heavy. Then I extend the flaps as the secondary turn is initiated and I permit my airplane to make a climbing arc during the secondary turn. The altitude at the peak to the turning arc mostly depends on how heavy I am. The angle of bank will go beyond 45 degrees (that’s all I will say about that). I have been asked, “what is my airspeed at the peak of the turn”, and the bloody truth is I do not know!

I don’t think I have ever looked at the airspeed indicator while I was working. I am “sitting” on my airspeed indicator. I know when I am getting too slow and I do something about it. “How steep is the angle of bank?” Again, that depends on how heavy I am and the airspeed I have

when I begin the secondary turn. As the nose of my airplane passes through the horizon at the 90° point, I begin descending and intercepting the next swath.

After reading this excerpt from the AT-503 POH, it made me think of a remark I heard recently from another ag pilot about a very “gray eagle” ag pilot.

It was mentioned that this gray eagle made all of his turns the same, whether heavy or light and an observer could not tell if he was at the beginning or end of the mission. I thought to myself, “What a wonderful thing to say about an ag pilot and how he flies.” That’s probably why he is still ag flying after many, many years and probably is accident free to boot. Furthermore, I bet he is not overly fatigued at the end of a long day. His customers will rue the day when he finally hangs up his hard hat. This is one gray eagle ag pilot (me) who tries to fly just like this other old gray eagle ag pilot.

Ag-pilot, air racer Al Goss passes December 16, 1942 to March 17, 2010—Alfred Fredrick Goss Jr., or “Al” to all that knew him, was born December 16, 1941 in Shenandoah, ID to Alfred and Lucille Goss.

At 18, Al started flying and soon found employment as a crop duster flying for Pat Tomlinson of M & W Flying in Porterville, CA. After several years he migrated to Northern California and flew for Daryl Day, Dusters, Farm Air, and Bob’s Flying Service. Twenty-two years ago, he took a job in the Bakersfield, CA area with Old River Crop Dusting, owned by dear friend and fellow air racer, Eddie Van Fossen.

In his professional career, Al flew Pawnees, Snows, J-3 Cubs, Stearmans, Thrushes, and Ag Cats, just to name a few. When not flying commercially, he focused his efforts on his beloved vintage North American, SNJ-6 Trainer - “Warlock” - Race 75. Al and his crew

Alfred (Al) Fredrick Goss, Jr. were always working toward his next chance to win Gold at the Reno Air Races.

This September was to be Al’s 30th Anniversary of racing “Warlock” at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, NV. Wednesday nights during race week, his crew members would bring out their band instruments and the band would play until late into the night. Al loved to have this annual party for all his crew, friends, fans, and his

Sadly, on March 17 while taking a flight, Al, his crew chief -Steve Ballard, and Warlock would not be returning to Minter Field.

A memorial service for Al has been set for Saturday, April 10, noon at Minter Field in Shafter, California at Eddie Van Fossen’s hangar.

Al is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara. He is survived by sons David, Randy and daughter-in-law Christy,

daughter Sandra Mayeux and son-in-law Elijah, five grandchildren, fiancée Anita, and many, many friends.

Flying has always been a passion for Ron Deck, owner of Sky Tractor in Hillsboro, North Dakota. For his son Mike Deck, the flying bug took a little longer to catch.

A native of Harvey, North Dakota, Ron grew up on a farm. He was given his first airplane ride as a teenager and was instantly hooked. After high school, he joined the Navy, where he spent his weekends learning to fly. Ron says he knew flying was what he wanted to do and with his farm background, crop spraying seemed like the best option for a flying career. After the Navy, he took his first spraying job as an operator in Kansas. He later moved to Bismarck, North Dakota, where he worked as a flight instructor. He purchased his first airplane in 1969 and started crop spraying on his own in the spring of 1970.

“I started spraying in the Steele area and up to Harvey. Later that season, I checked out Hillsboro and that’s where

we stayed,” says Ron. He began running his own crop spraying company, called Deck’s Flying Service.

From the age of 10, Ron’s son Mike was helping out at his dad’s business by sweeping the floors and doing other odd jobs. It wasn’t until Mike was 22 that he decided it was time to try flying. While he didn’t have the natural-born passion his dad did, once up in the airplane, Mike knew it was where he was meant to be.

“You get to do what only a small percentage of people get to,” says Mike.

He remembers one time that was unique.

While spraying a field, Mike noticed a fire that had started on a farmer’s deck.

He immediately called his dad, who happened to be test-flying an airplane.

This meant the airplane was full only of water. Ron flew to the site, dumped his load of water on the deck and put the fire out. While most days aren’t filled with this much excitement, Mike says he

“Never in my wildest dreams would I believe we’d be doing this,” says Ron, describing how Surety has improved the way Sky Tractor does business. They began using the mapping system in 2008 and both Ron and Mike believe this technology has dramatically changed the crop-spraying industry by drastically reducing errors and increasing spraying efficiency.

“It’s just a world of difference,” says Ron. “I would never want to go back to the old way.” The “old way” for the Decks was receiving handwritten maps from each farmer. With Surety, they now

Next year will be his 19th year of flying.

Throughout the years, the father and son team have seen many changes to the business. In the 1980’s Ron purchased a parts company called Sky Tractor. It was then that Deck’s Flying Service went from purely a crop spraying business to a spraying and parts company. He also kept the name Sky Tractor. The company

Ron retired from crop spraying a couple of years ago. His main focus is now the day-to-day operations and customer relations. It’s an honor, he says, that he never expected.

Ron has spent his career doing what he loves to do, including sharing his knowledge and training pilots who went on to start their own businesses. contest rules The theme of the 2010 essay competition is “Political Influence on Agricultural Aviation.” The competition is open to all NAAA members and the children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughtersin-law or spouse of any NAAA operator, pilot member, retired operator or pilot who maintains an active membership with the NAAA. The contest is also open to allied industry members and the children, grandchildren, sons-inlaw, daughters-in-law or spouse of an allied industry member. To qualify, dues must be paid by the organization or individual member on or before June 15, 2010.

Entrants must have graduated from high school prior to the entry deadline and be enrolled in continuing education during the year of entry. Previous winners are not eligible to compete.

The entry deadline is Aug. 15, 2010.

Essays must be 1,500 words or less.

Topic deviation and/or modification will not be accepted. Papers submitted will be judged on content, theme development, clarity, originality and proper grammar. All sources used must be cited. Plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification. Entries must be typewritten and double-spaced.

To ensure that the judges will not know the identities of the writer, keep any reference to the author’s name, sponsoring company and company location out of the essay itself. The destruction of Satan God created angelic beings and set up a ranking order among the angels. Lucifer, one of the highest ranking angels, decided that he wanted to take God’s place. Isaiah wrote, “How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High’” (Isaiah 14:12-14). God had anointed Lucifer as a guardian cherub and he was blameless until wickedness was found in him (Ezekiel 28:15). Lucifer rebelled against the authority of God and he was expelled from the mount of God and

one-third of the angels followed Satan in this rebellion against God (Revelation 12:4). Satan and his demons are now in a battle with God and His forces for control of the universe and everything in it.

God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden of Eden and told them they could eat of every tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and if they ate of that tree they would die (Genesis 2:16-17) .

Satan lied to Eve by telling her that she wouldn’t die and that she would be like God if she ate of the tree. Eve saw that the tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, desirable to make a person wise and she ate of its fruit. Then Eve gave this fruit to Adam and he ate (read Genesis 3:1-6). The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the lust for worldly

wisdom caused Adam and Eve to disobey God and obey Satan. Adam and Eve sold out their control of the earth to Satan and all their descendants were born with the natural tendency to sin (sin nature). Jesus said that Satan is the prince of this world (John 12:31) and Paul said that Satan is the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4). Satan even offered to give back the control of this earth to Jesus Christ if He would worship him (Matthew 4:8-9).

God allowed Satan to become the prince of this world and to tempt all of humanity with all sorts of evil and cause problems for the human race.

A good example of this is when God allowed Satan to cause Job to lose all of his wealth and his children to be killed (Job 1-2). Satan is out to destroy anyone God will allow him to go after. Peter

warns us to be self-controlled and alert.

Our enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Paul tells us to, “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). James tells us to, “Submit ourselves, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Satan is a liar; he tells people that they don’t need God. But spiritually strong Christians don’t fall for Satan’s lies; they know that Jesus Christ will destroy Satan.

After Antichrist and the false prophet are thrown into the lake of fire, an angel from heaven with the key to the Abyss and holding a great chain, will seize Satan and bind him and throw Satan into the Abyss and lock and seal it over him to keep him from deceiving the nations

until a thousand years have passed. After the thousand years are over, Satan will be turned loose for a short time and he will deceive the nations of the earth and gather them together for battle against God’s people and Jerusalem. Even after being imprisoned for a thousand years, Satan still hates God and his people as much as ever; Satan knows that his time is about over, so his fury against God and his people is even stronger.

There will be Christians who live through the tribulation and enter into the 1000 year reign of Jesus Christ on this earth in their fleshly bodies. These Christians will have children who are born with the same fleshly bodies and they will have to make their own decision about Jesus Christ. During the 1000 year earthly reign of Jesus on this earth there will perfect peace, no hunger, no sickness and godly living conditions on this earth.

Because of this the lifespan of people will be lengthened dramatically (Isaiah 65:20), which will cause a population explosion.

In spite of the benefits of living under Jesus’ perfect rule, many of the descendants of the Christians that have survived the tribulation will follow Satan’s final rebellion against God. This

will prove the inherit wickedness within the human heart and mind, and destroy the sociologist’s humanistic idea that humanity is inherently good. “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9). These people who rebel against Jesus Christ while under His perfect rule will justify God’s punishment of the wicked. Arrogance is what caused Satan to rebel against God, and arrogance is what causes a human to rebel against God. After Satan has been released from his prison, he will go out and deceive the people and nations in every part of the world. Satan will gather his horde of demons and his people for battle against God and His forces. Satan will surround God’s people and Jerusalem in an effort to destroy God, His angelic forces and His people. But God will send down fire from heaven and destroy Satan’s forces.

Satan will be thrown into the lake of fire where Antichrist and the false prophet are (Revelation 20:7-10). God needs no angelic or human help to destroy Satan!

God never forces anyone to follow Him, but those who refuse His grace and mercy through faith in Jesus Christ will be cast into the lake of fire with Satan and his evil forces (Revelation 20:15).

Anytime a regulatory agency decides to make a ruling, it is wise and prudent to allow those affected by the ruling to make a comment. As the publisher of the worldwide, leading agricultural aviation publication, AgAir Update, I am grateful for the opportunity.

Basically, the draft needs to be rewritten in a comprehensible manner that eliminates vague terms (“could cause” or “could contact”), inaccuracies and incorrect assumptions.

It is proven, scientific knowledge and fact that drift does not occur upwind, therefore buffer zones should not be required in such cases that are upwind of the application.

Another inaccuracy is drift claims concerning aerial applications, when in fact, based on lead state regulatory agencies, ground applicators are more prone to drift.

It is not better to fly lower to the ground in most cases, although “lower” is a relative term. Ten to fifteen-foot application heights above the ground are proven to be more accurate with less drift.

These proposed changes would bring about unnecessary regulations and have an overall negative impact on the environment. Aerial applicators are green stewards of the land and environment. Because of their efforts and professionalism, America (and the world) enjoy an abundance of safe food, fiber and bio-fuels, that otherwise would require huge amounts of land clearing to offset reduced yields if not for aerial applications. This extra land clearing to offset yield losses that will occur with these proposed changes, negatively affects wildlife, increases the amount of fossil fuels consumed and increases production costs that must be passed on to the consumer.

EPA and aerial applicators ultimately want the same things. We should work together to accomplish these goals and in a responsible and professional manner that reflects accurate data and common sense.

Helpful steps on planning your insurance for the upcoming season

These steps can be implemented to help mitigate your risks and continue to improve the risk management of your operation.

1. Remember to always review your current policy limits and commodity prices with your aviation insurance agent/broker. Make sure you are comfortable with the limits you have compared to your property damage exposure.

2. Review and contact the operators you will be working with or that you will call in to work with you this

upcoming season. This important step will confirm you know who the pilots are and familiarize you with the aircraft they will be operating, thus presenting an overall picture of your operation. Obtain a certificate of insurance from each operator in order to confirm they have coverage. You will also need a certificate in order to avoid paying service fees on workers’ compensation paid to independent contractors.

3. Review any contracts you have with any farmers, seed companies and chemical suppliers to confirm you have the right coverage to comply with what they are requiring in those contracts.

4. We suggest that you have a winter review with all of your staff and pilots.

This provides an opportunity to discuss the challenges and successes of the previous season. This would allow the time to implement any changes or provide training opportunities to make your operation more efficient and safe this upcoming season.

5. As many of you know, aircraft values have changed dramatically over the past few years. However, most aircraft values have stabilized for Ag Aviation. It is still important to review aircraft values if you have made any upgrades on your engine, equipment, GPS, spray boom, nozzles or other items that could have caused the aircraft values to change.

6. Make sure you participate in the PAASS Program and Operation S.A.F.E. as well as your state associations and/ or NAAA conventions. This will keep you up to date on issues affecting the industry, and aids in networking with other operators who may help you in the future. There is also a price incentive for participating. Student project highlights ag aviation industry Students Regan Zanardi and Kyle Grotelueschen, sixth graders at Christ Lutheran School near Columbus, Nebraska approached National History Day with a special project. They decided to feature “Crop Dusting” in their March 6 exhibit in the event’s “Innovation in History” theme.

In preparation of their exhibit, Regan and Kyle interviewed two Nebraska ag pilots, members of the Nebraska Aviation Trades Association. The students contacted Brian Wilcox, of Wilcox Aerial Applications, Inc. of Tilden, Nebraska and Craig Bair, of Ag Flight, York, Nebraska.

They learned from the pilots’ experiences, how their operations worked, what types of aerial applications the pilots make and collected photos from them. Both pilots commented on how they thoroughly enjoyed the students’ interest and curiosity to learn about agricultural aviation. From Craig Bair, the students discovered the Bair family’s three-generation experiences in the industry.

During their interviews, the students researched the advent of crop dusting, how the aircraft were modified after the World War II for aerial applications, advances in chemical safety, GPS guidance systems, turbine engines, and new crop production techniques using aircraft to aerially apply rice seed in Arkansas. As a result, they created an exhibit and it was on display on the Dana College campus for the competition.

Through their exhibit, Regan and Kyle found themselves presenting how the aerial application industry is a great innovation for agriculture. Their exhibit received a 4th place ranking in the Junior Group Exhibit Forum.

Regan is the daughter of Darren & Becki Zanardi, owners of Liberty Aviation, which specializes in aerial application aircraft maintenance, inspection and repair at Norfolk, NE. Kyle is the son of Bryce and Tammy Grotelueschen, who farm and raise cattle at their operation near Leigh, NE.

While maneuvering at low level over a field during an aerial application flight, the pilot took his hand off the collective to adjust the sun visor because the sun was in his eyes. The pilot reported that he had used his leg to block the collective from moving as he adjusted the visor. The helicopter hit mild turbulence and bumped his leg away from the collective. The collective slipped down, and the helicopter impacted the ground and rolled over on its side. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the tailboom and cockpit. The pilot stated

that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the helicopter’s flight control system or engine prior to the accident.

The local flight departed from a field near Los Banos. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed.

The pilot reported that he had just completed an aerial application of a wheat field, and was returning to land.

As he approached the landing area he

began to apply power but the engine did not respond. He continued to twist the throttle, but the engine speed did not change. He aborted the landing approach, and turned the helicopter towards a larger open field. He circled the field about three times while attempting to diagnose the problem. He then elected to perform a run-on landing in the field; during the landing approach the engine speed began to decrease, and the helicopter landed hard.

During the landing the tailboom separated from the aft bulkhead, and the lower fuselage sustained crush damage.

Post accident examination revealed that the throttle control lever, located at the aft end of the collective stick assembly, had become separated from the cam lever rod bearing.

The pilot reported that the airplane was loaded with fertilizer and fuel for the first flight of the day. During the takeoff, the airplane did not perform as it normally did so he attempted to dump the fertilizer. The airplane subsequently collided with terrain in a nearby field.

The airplane sustained damage to the empennage and wings.

NTSB Identification: *WPR10LA125* Date: February 23, 2010 Location: Byron, CA Aircraft: Ag-Cat G164B Injuries: 1 Uninjured.

On February 23, 2010, about 1330 Pacific standard time, a Schweizer Aircraft Corporation, G-164B experienced a loss of engine power near Byron, California. The airplane was operating under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 as an agricultural crop-dusting operation. The airplane sustained structural damage after making a forced landing on a soft dirt field and nosing over onto its back.

The commercial certificated pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions were prevalent in the area, and no flight plan had been filed.

According to the pilot, on the accident flight he had flown 15 minutes when the loss of engine power occurred. He had just finished spraying a field and was making a turn back to the operator’s airstrip when the engine began to run rough, and there was a significant power loss. As the airplane was at a low altitude, he had just enough time to turn into the wind and line up with an open field. The pilot described the field as being deeply furrowed and bare. Upon touchdown the tires and landing gear sank into the soft wet ground, and the airplane nosed over.

The airplane was located two days later by an airborne pilot who observed it in the field and reported it to Northern California terminal radar approach control (TRACON) personnel.

An ag-operator can take his operation to the next level by integrating AGNAV’s advanced GIS SprayViewW software into his AG-NAV Guia GPS unit. It has all the functions of the NavViewW software; however is more powerful with features that can prove beneficial in the long run.

The feature-loaded SprayViewW

software helps create a flight report using a background map and the selected data needed to create a spray area. It can also replay flight data saved in a Shape file from an AG-NAV Guia GPS unit.

money. By being able to show flight data in a KML format, anyone will be able view the data on Google Earth images. This feature is ideal for high quality images used in presentations. If the operator is using AG-NAV’s wireless data transfer technology, AG-NAV Connect, simply convert the KML files into spray areas, and/or projects, and send the output files directly to Guia systems wirelessly.

With SprayViewW software, applications can be analyzed by replaying the flight data for a postflight review and creating an in-depth post-flight report using any one of the files mentioned above to keep accurate information of completed applications.

It is easy to select the data for display on reports for future reference.

SprayViewW software comes with a one-time license fee. There is no annual subscription fee and the license allows access for free updates and free lifetime support. The answer is spinning in the wind Winning Design Revealed in NAAA’s “No Guy Wire Left Behind” Contest

by Ron Cline, Chairman NAAA Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations Committee In 2007, Karen Plath, of Plath Aviation of Oaks, N.D., tried to coordinate an effort to make ag aviation safer in the area where she and her family live and work. She contacted her local utility district to see if

they would install markers on guy wires. It was then that she learned the only choice available was the yellow UV markers called “Guy Guards,” which are installed at ground level. The utility company was willing to install the guy guards and charge her for materials and labor. This was not the solution she was looking for.

The ability to identify obstructions is a very important issue to the ag aviation community. NAAA records indicate that during the previous 15 years, almost 14 percent of Part 137 accidents were the result of collisions with power lines or towers including their supporting guy wire structures. Even more shocking is that these accidents accounted for more than 22 percent of the reported fatalities. Many accidents could be prevented if these obstructions were made more visible to the pilot.

Mrs. Plath called NAAA Director of Education & Safety Ken Degg and conveyed the dilemma to him. Ken went to work with Craig Bair, then chairman of the NAAA Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations Committee, to try to find a workable solution. The problem identified was that there is currently no cost-effective guy wire marker for ag aviation. The next year, the committee, then chaired by me, convened in Washington D.C., and spawned the idea of a contest that would reward $1,000 to the person submitting the winning design of a visible guy wire marker for ag pilots.

This “No Guy Wire Left Behind” contest was initiated in February 2008.

By September 2009 the NAAA committee had 12 designs submitted for evaluation. These designs ranged

from high-visibility flagging to suspended surfactant jugs to solar powered strobe lights. The entries were so innovative and diverse that judging became a very complicated task. The winning entry was not unanimously selected but it simply received the most points. The winning entry was submitted by Lewis Blomeley of Albany, Ga., chief engineer for Thrush Aircraft Inc. Lew’s corkscrew design, which he calls a “Guy Guard,” resembles an auger made of high-visibility, colored plastic that snaps onto the guy wire. His design is six inches in diameter and 12 inches in length for two complete turns of the screw. However, he adds that the dimensions of the marker could easily be scalable to make it any size that is needed for visibility in special situations. The marker is held in place by a neoprene rubber retainer that is installed directly below it. The beauty of the installation is the retainer can be pushed up the guy wire to the desired height using a positioning tool with a long handle so that installation can be done without using equipment to hoist the installer above the ground. Of course, this type of installation can only be used for the markers on power line guys and the lower areas of tower guy systems. All that is needed then is for a breeze to spin the marker causing areas of reflected light which appear to move lengthwise making the design effective.

Below is Lew’s exceptional idea. The following judging criteria were used to determine the winner and how the design qualified.

Low cost: Initial tooling cost is high but when amortized over a large number of units the per-unit cost is estimated to be as low as $1.00 ea.

Design Appeal/Visibility: The design is esthetically appealing, scalable and highly visible.

Move with wind: Design will rotate relative to wind speed.

Recycled Pesticide Containers (HDPE): The design could be manufactured from recycled containers.

Weather Survival: The design rotates to reduce attachment loads. Rotation friction can be adjusted to enhance endurance.

Attachment System: The unit can be installed from the ground with the attachment tool and retainer.

Prototype: No working model submitted.

Safety is one of the most important mission objectives of NAAA. The most extraordinary example of that model today is the continuing education that the ag aviation industry receives through the PAASS program. Today’s ag pilot operates in an environment that is increasingly complex and over-regulated. Economic and regulatory-driven solutions have equipped man and machine with technological capabilities never before achieved in agricultural aviation. We fly more acres per hour with a higher level of precision that not only enhances crop efficacy and reduces off-target drift but ultimately increases the net profit for our growers. We should continue toward this goal and strive to reward our industry with not only ideas but solutions to enhance safety in our lives.

Solving cylinder issues for the R-985 and R-1340 It’s the next best thing to new cylinders

by Bill Lavender Most seasoned ag-pilots have at least some experience flying behind a radial engine. Many have thousands of hours logged flying either a Pratt & Whitney R-985 or an R-1340. All have considered the possibility of a cylinder failure, while more than just a few have actually experienced it.

As forgiving as the radial engine is, a cylinder failure can bring a flight to an abrupt halt. However, often times the pilot can safely return to the landing site or make a suitable off-site landing even though the cylinder head has separated from the barrel or the head has split from spark plug hole to spark plug hole.

Regardless of the type of acute cylinder failure, the situation is a very serious one and requires immediate action.

Even if the pilot follows prudent, preventive practices, like a daily walk

around inspection of the barrel-to-head area of the cylinder and using correct power settings during takeoff and operation, the tired, old cylinders are still prone to fail, usually unexpectedly.

Tulsa Aircraft Engines has identified this problem and designed a solution that will reduce the rate of cylinder failure due to the head separating from the barrel for R-985s and barrel skirt failure for R-1340s. Their solution is the next best thing to a new cylinder head and barrel assembly.

Founded by Henry Thompson, Tulsa Aircraft Engines has been overhauling radial engines and their cylinder components since the early 1970s. Tulsa Aircraft Engines is confident its method of overhauling will extend the life of R-985 and R-1340 cylinders while enhancing the overall reliability of these engines. The R-985 newly reconditioned cylinders will have a 1,000-hour warranty protecting against head and barrel separation. The R-1340 cylinders have a 1,200-hour warranty for skirt failure. All cylinders have a prorated warranty for other sorts of failures. Engines received for overhaul are allowed a three-cylinder rejection factor, meaning there are no cylinder core charges up to the first three rejected cylinders.

Customers have several choices for various options when Tulsa Aircraft Engines overhauls their engine. An engine can be dropped off at the Tulsa, Oklahoma shop, or Tulsa Aircraft Engines will arrange for discount shipping that typically saves the customer about 65%.

The savings is passed on to the customer and the shipping bill is added to the overhaul cost.

The customer first decides whether to have the cylinder recondition option with new barrels and reconditioned heads for $600 each for the R-985 and $650.00 each for the R-1340. Furthermore, the

customer can elect to have the new cylinder barrels powder-coated on the outside of the cylinder barrel with a color selected by the customer. Powder coating protects the steel cylinder from the corrosive elements found in aerial applications. It is a $675 option that includes all nine cylinders. Alternately, there is an optional sealer coating available that is applied over the metalizing which protects the exterior of the cylinder barrel for $450 that includes all nine cylinders.

It would seem to be almost a necessity with new barrels to have a set of brand new pistons installed, but it is optional.

New pistons can be installed for an additional $1,530 for R-985 engines or $1,850 for R-1340 engines.

If an operator is not already doing so, he should be conducting a walk around inspection before the first flight of the day and again during a shut down that looks at each cylinder where the head screws onto the barrel. If a wet, oil seepage occurs between the second and third fin of the head, usually in the area under the exhaust port, the cylinder should be suspect of failure. A dye penetrate developer can be sprayed on the cylinder to confirm if the cylinder has cracked. This inspection is worthy of doing for any radial engine, but

With more than 30 engines working in the field for the past 18 months with these types of cylinders, the failure rate has been reduced by 90% when compared to a typical engine overhaul for the same time period. If a Tulsa Aircraft Engine overhaul is good enough for the air show favorites Kyle Franklin’s Waco, Matt Younkin’s Beech-18, Gene Soucy’s Show Cat and John Zayac’s Reno Air Racer T-6 #37, then it surely is good enough for an ag-operator!
