Check out Te Komititanga, the fully pedestrianised plaza outside Commercial Bay. Designed by Mana Whenua weavers, it features over 137,000 basalt pavers to mimic a whāriki (Māori welcome mat).

Winter Weekend Itinerary: ALL EYES SOUTH To rush through South Auckland in a hurry to the next stop would be a mistake. A myriad of experiences await all those who delve a little deeper.

FRIDAY: ACTIVE INDULGENCE Ease your way into a relaxed weekend with a morning High Tea at Fisher House in Highbrook, a 20-minute drive south of central Auckland. Available between 9am and 11am, pick at sweet pastries in the former grounds of Sir Woolf and Lady Fisher. Built in 1962 as a 71-hectare racing horse stud farm, it’s preened to perfection.

With rounded bellies, drive a further 15 minutes west to Manukau Harbour, the larger of Auckland’s twin harbours and a spectacle of tidal flats and wading birds. The harbour’s inner reaches can be admired from Mangere Bridge, a bonny village bristling with community spirit.

Six minutes from here is Ambury Regional Park, gateway to the Manukau Coastal Cycleway.

Grazing the waterfront, this 14km return route is flat and easy.

Follow the trail to Ōtuataua Stonefields with its resident large-scale archaeological remnants.

TOP TIP: No bike? No worries. Hire your wheels from Torpedo7 in Manukau.

Not solely an ancient volcano with impressive 360-degree views, Māngere Mountain encompasses an Education Centre and gardens. If you have energy left in the tank, guided 90-minute walks are available.

With appetites rife once more, head to Pah Homestead in Hillsborough, a 10-minute drive north. Located in an impressive Italianate heritage building, the café sits atop a hill overlooking Monte Cecilia Park. Tuck into a light lunch before admiring some of the 9000-strong collection of contemporary artworks curated from the Wallace Arts Trust Collection, then pop into the shop, and an emporium of fantastic one-of-a-kind crafts. A walk around the sweeping park is equally hard to resist.

Finish the day at Villa Maria Estate winery. The newly renamed Tasting Room combines wine tasting with small platters, served in the vineyard’s stately surroundings.

SATURDAY: BARGAINS, GARDENS & GLAMPING For an experience unique to South Auckland, rise and shine for the Otara Flea Market in Manukau. Erupting from 6am every Saturday, discover 150 lively stores peddling everything from Polynesian crafts to fresh produce and a kaleidoscope of bric-à-brac. There are food stalls where Pacific flavours prevail, live music and vibrant cultural performances. Cash is king so load your pockets with gold.

Spend the afternoon at Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa. An all-round crowd pleaser, this great green expanse has something for everyone, and dogs are welcome too, albeit on a leash. Kids love the award-winning Potter Children’s Garden which is both educational and enthralling.

There are large-scale outdoor sculptures, 10 hectares of forest and lakes, an edible garden for those after backyard inspiration and just about every imaginable

plant species for the die-hard horticulturists. Peckish? There’s a café, too.

Stay at Castaways Resort tonight. Perched on a wild cliffside over Karioitahi Beach, their glamping experiences include luxury coastal tents with fire pits and outdoor bathtubs. But first, dinner. From the gardens, detour to The Munted Jandal in Waiuku.

Famed for both its amusing name and gourmet takeaway burgers, it’s just a nine-minute drive from Castaway Resort. Skedaddle home and chow down before a stunning oceanscape.

What can visitors expect at Weta Workshop Unleashed?

Expect the unexpected! We think of it as offering our guests whatever their mind can unleash.

Unlike most museums and exhibitions, guests can play with so many elements – touch is such an important part of learning.

It’s a hyper crazy version of our workshop in which there are three movie elements – a classic, lowbudget, horror flick, a fantasy film and an epic sci-fi movie with a local connection.

How do your tours differ from Weta Workshop tours in Wellington?

They are really quite different. Our Wellington tours showcase the cool stuff we've made over 25 years. In some cases, the items are precious so you can’t touch them. In Weta Workshop Unleashed, guests can see, feel and touch what we’ve made; take photos and play.

Tell us about your role I am the experience lead, so my job is to make sure everything is running properly. And I look after

our fantastic crew. We call them Unleashed Technicians and they are the face of our experience – bringing it to life and making it really fun and lively. I also help our team in the Weta Cave. This is our biggest and most exciting retail site where visitors can come and see the displays and rare collectibles.

What do you like about it?

Every day here is very different and I really love the fast pace – there’s always something happening.

Another great part of my role is seeing how the hosts build relationships with our guests. All of our crew bring a little of themselves to Weta Workshop Unleashed.

What is the most popular workshop and why?

You really can’t compare them – they are very, very different experiences. We encourage people, if they can, to see both.

Any other thoughts?

We have had such a wonderful response from our guests and we would love to see plenty more Kiwis come and experience Weta Workshop Unleashed.

30-minute ferry from Sandspit Wharf Enjoying its own microclimate, winter temperatures can still hit 20 degrees celsius. Dense bush lends itself to rugged walks and bird spotting. Sir George Grey (Governor-General of New Zealand) purchased Kawau in the 1860s and you can still visit his Victorian mansion, botanical and zoological park (now with a café). Auckland has an extensive public transport network of buses, trains and ferries that make it easy to get around. You can travel to most parts of Auckland with the Link bus departure points, Britomart train station and ferry terminal all located around the lower end of Queen St.

BUS SERVICES

Auckland Transport (AT) Metro bus services operate from early in the morning, with higher frequency services during commuter times, and run until around 11pm. On Friday and Saturday, later Northern Express and Night Buses depart central Auckland to various suburbs, and operate into the early hours of the morning.

FERRY TRANSPORT

RAIL TRANSPORT

AT Metro ferries have regular commuter services that sail from central Auckland to 13 coastal locations including Devonport and Waiheke Island, and the more recent additions of Hobsonville, Gulf and Pine harbours.

AT Metro trains travel to south, east and west Auckland. They depart from the Britomart Station at the bottom of Queen St and are ideal for getting to major shopping centres or events at Eden Park and Mt Smart Stadium.

You can pay for your AT Metro bus, train or ferry trip with cash, or with an AT HOP card. For more details about AT HOP cards, visit AT.govt.nz/ATHOP.

TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT SkyBus operates the City Airport Express to and from the airport and central Auckland, operating seven days a week from 5.50am. The North Harbour Express service is temporarily suspended.

Airporter buses operate seven days a week from 4.30am to 11.45pm, on a 15-20 minute schedule.
