President’s Letter Dear Friends and Fellow AATG Members, This has been a most unusual year due to the pandemic caused by the novel Coronavirus. Every AATG member has been impacted by the changes brought about by this epidemic, and our organization has been impacted as well.

I want to thank Dr. Susanne Rinner for her very dedicated work as our organization’s President for 2018 and 2019. I would also like to thank our former Executive Director, Keith Cothrun, for the uncountable contributions and efforts he made on behalf of our organization, beginning as a regional representative, later as the national President, and finally as the Executive Director for the last eight years.

In February we began the process of selecting a new Executive Director. Through the able leadership of Susanne Rinner, the Selection Committee put forward the suggestion that we select Dr. Michael Shaughnessy. I led the contract negotiations with Mike and he took on the full responsibilities of Executive Director on July 1, 2020.

Mike and I have spoken a great deal over the past five months about our hopes and visions for our organization. He instituted some changes right away that are showing benefits for our membership.

Chief among these changes was upgraded electronic equipment for our national staff, so that they could work better from home. The staff will continue to use the equipment in the future as they hopefully transition to more in-office days. Mike has worked tirelessly with our national staff to help them feel comfortable, while maintaining efficiency, as they work primarily from their homes.

This Spring, the Board of Directors and I drafted a statement on racial injustice that reflected our strong beliefs that, as an educational organization, each of us must do all we can not only to oppose racism, but also to lead in educating and informing about racism and racial oppression. Grant money provided the venue for a fall workshop with the theme of developing teaching materials about creating safe spaces. AATG members with varied ethnic and gender backgrounds were strongly encouraged to apply for the workshop. The final assembled group reflected well the great diversity that makes AATG strong and vibrant. Plans and grant applications are being set in motion to continue this vital work.

Realizing that the AATG did not have a specific written policy on diversity, equity, and inclusion, I led the research to develop a policy. With very fine and supportive feedback from AATG members, the Board and I were able to create the AATG Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that was finalized and placed in the Bylaws in October. This statement formalizes the positions that we

understand, value, and promote diversity among our members, equitable treatment of all, and inclusive actions that strive earnestly to help each member know they are valued deeply.

Recognizing the need for a specific group to look at issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organization, the Board of Directors created a Standing Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This committee will begin its work in 2021 and will be composed of six members, three K-12 representatives and three post-secondary representatives. Members of this committee will serve a three-year term. The application is now open through Friday, January 8, 2021 at 11:59 PM EST and can be found at aatg.org/page/ App_DEI_Committee. Committee members will be selected in January and commence work in February.

I also worked throughout the summer to help members file a petition for a constitutional amendment to bring their aspirations to fruition in the form of a legally acceptable petition. This petition seeks to amend the AATG Constitution to include a position on the Board of Directors for a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. Members can vote on the petition through December 30, 2020 online. The Board decided to publish the explanation of the petition, included with the final version by its writers, so that all members can be informed.

Due to the Coronavirus, in-person chapter meetings and state conferences were largely cancelled for this year and changed over to online events. I was able to represent the AATG at the digital GASANC workshop in August, where I presented two sessions. This Fall I participated in state chapter meetings in Washington, Indiana, South Carolina, and Central Pennsylvania, as well as attended the Georgia Department of Education online conference for German educators and the Colorado-Wyoming autumn online teacher workshop.

Last year we changed the format of many of our external committees that did not have a specific governance task related to AATG to Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The Board and I are working on guiding points for structural frameworks for the and this action is Staff in response BySIGs, Jennifer McArthur, Writerto numerous requests from AATG members that the Board more carefully outline the functions of SIGs. The structural frameworks will be finalized by December 2020, and I can assure members that there will be room for innovation in the frameworks.

Looking to the future, I believe strongly that we need to develop, discuss, and examine closely strategic plans for both the immediate future and the longer reach of time. I do not mean to harp on the concept of the pandemic, but it has most assuredly changed the field of education. We must look with fresh perspectives at what we can hope to accomplish, and then work hard to bring those hopes to realizations.

German Program Success in Montana

Montana AATG has had a great 2019-2020 school year. Despite setbacks due to COVID, we were able to double our membership. Last Fall, we received a Deutsch Macht Spass grant, which helped bring teachers from across the state together for an engaging AATG workshop on local Hutterite communities. In the Spring, middle school and high school teachers from Bozeman Public School District worked together with Montana State University on a Holocaust lesson and banner project. The banner was to be hung at the entrance to the Bozeman exhibit, which unfortunately did not take place because of the pandemic.

In addition to projects and programs, our high school German programs have been experiencing departmental growth and increasing class sizes. In particular, Billings Senior High School and Billings West High School German programs have seen

Before long, as the programs grew, those part-time positions became full-time positions.

Kristi Schell (Billings Senior HS) and Natasha Campbell (Billings West HS) are long-standing pillars in the district. In

2016, Kristi launched the first AP German course in Billings, which had a substantial positive impact on the program. In 2017, Paul Asleson (Billings West HS) came on board to support the overflow of German classes. In 2018, Mark Buckner (Billings Senior HS) took on extra classes, as Paul moved to Billings West High School full-time and started the second AP German program.

Billings West High School's AP Program has grown from 10 students in its initial year to 19 current students, and there are 40 German 3 students eligible for AP German next year. Billings West also applied for and received a teaching assistant, Jill Biethan, from Germany through the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst. In 2019, Olga Shatalova (Billings Skyview HS) rejuvenated the German program, doubling the number of intro-level classes.

Finally, in 2020, Billings West added four more sections of German because of high demand from students. The overall growth in programs from 2016 to 2020 (four-year span) is 2.8 positions to five full-time positions. They attribute their success not only to this spirited group of educators, but also to their ability to collaborate on exciting opportunities and events for students. Billings German participates yearly in the National German Exam (all schools participated, with medal winners at all schools), Meet a German Day, and National Teach German Week. The teachers maintain strong connections with the state university German programs

(Montana State University and University of Montana) through professor visits and online meetings, and even a friendly lip-sync video contest between Bozeman’s and Billings’ teachers. They have active German clubs with Billings West hosting a yearly Oktoberfest. With the success of Oktoberfest, they also added a Fasching/

Karneval celebration this past year in addition to other cultural events, weekly meetings, and fundraising.

During these events, you just may find Paul, Olga, Kristi, Natasha, and Jill strolling the halls in their finest German get-up. Still more reasons for their success include:

Building a strong community of German teachers across the district who collaborate, keep in touch, and celebrate each other.

Aligning curriculums to ensure consistency and quality of German education across levels and across schools.

Maintaining a city-wide German presence.

Focusing on professional development. The teachers learn and implement different strategies for creating more engaging classes, incorporating CI, and fostering better communication.

Highlighting our discipline. The educators make a strong statement about German to colleagues in other departments and on social media by recognizing exam medalists at assemblies and regularly updating social media pages.

Billings German has exciting prospects on the horizon as well, with another teaching assistant from the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst arriving this school year. The groundwork is being set for future GAPP/ GAVE programs, and there are preliminary talks for a Deutsches Sprachdiplom Program. Moreover, Paul Asleson is a member of the German team for College Board’s new "AP Daily" video series (Paul attended the 2019 ACTFL Convention, where he received the German Embassy of Excellence Award). We are so happy to see the success of German programs across our state, and we applaud Billings’ German teachers for their hard work in making German a reputable institution in Billings’ schools.

Making Lemonade: Recruiting World Language Teachers—Especially German!

The global pandemic has thrown a monkey wrench into the travel plans for many courses. Life has given us lemons, and now it’s time to make lemonade. When Cathy Altmeyer’s January 2021 trip to Berlin was canceled for her students at Washington & Jefferson College, Cathy decided to instead address the shortage of world language teachers by offering a two-week course that would allow students to give language teaching a try and learn about the profession. Over the years, many W&J graduates had contacted her years after graduation to express an interest in world language teaching and ask for advice. Most of these students had majored in the language and continued to study it at the graduate level, but had not taken education courses as an undergraduate.

Cathy’s idea was this: what if the idea of teaching could be planted into students’ minds earlier in their educational careers? W&J College boasts an excellent teacher preparation program, during which students experience 200+ hours in the classroom prior to student teaching. 100% of the graduates of the program are employed after graduation. It would serve the future of the profession well to encourage language fans to enroll in such a high-quality program.

The United States is certainly already facing a shortage of world language teachers, which will only worsen without action. A few participants will also tutor students in English in other parts of the world, including Spain, China, and Germany. Of course, Cathy is hoping for a promising batch of future German teachers, but there is definitely a need for French, Spanish, and Chinese language teachers.

Participants will learn about the various paths to teacher certification and what various teaching

opportunities are like, including immersion schools, exploratory schools, and traditional language classes. Students will also connect with local world language teachers to learn about the profession.

With any luck, the spirit of recruitment will spread to other disciplines at the college, as there is an overall need for teachers in all subjects. Each of us has had teachers who have made a life-long impact on us, and we need to refresh the supply of passionate educators constantly. Sometimes all it takes is a nudge in the right direction, the debunking of a few well-worn myths, and a small taste of the joy that is teaching.

Cathy Altmeyer is an Assistant Professor of German at Washington & Jefferson College. An active member of AATG, PSMLA, and Delta Phi Alpha, she is passionate about teaching languages, especially German.

She works with future teachers at the college through her teaching methods course and through her work observing student teachers as a member of W&J College’s Committee on the Teaching Professions.

Southern New Jersey Chapter Honors Mary Ann Stecher South Jersey honors our colleague Mary Ann Stecher, who decided to retire after forty-two dedicated years teaching German. We are, of course, sad for the rich talent that will no longer be a part of our active teaching community, but happy for her new adventure to start.

“I first met Mary Ann in the summer of 1993.

I had completed one year of teaching and had moved to my first apartment in Southern NJ. So where did we meet? In Bar Harbor, Maine!

I hadn’t unpacked my boxes yet when I had headed up to Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor. Mary Ann was also participating. She was kind and encouraging and told me that

I needed to be a part of the South Jersey Chapter. Fast forward almost 27 years to the day and I am serving as president of our chapter. Reluctantly, Mary Ann decided her

I replied again with the same answer and she continued with ,,Ich bin zweiunddreißig! Deine Mutter muß...". I repeated my answer again in English and the look on her face as she contemplated my mother could be

The impact she has had on our community rippling out to others is beyond measure. In addition to a thriving German club, Mary Ann has coached one successful Knowledge Bowl team after another. She

has worked collaboratively with her in-district colleagues and worked compassionately with students of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Over her decades of service, Mary Ann has participated with her students in our language day “Sprachfest,” our Niklausabend, Oktoberfest, Filmabende and other South Jersey Chapter events.

She has been an anchor at our PD days and is someone we all have come to count on in our professional lives.

Wesleyan University Students Produce Inaugural Episode of German Podcast Students in the German Studies program at Wesleyan University produced their first German podcast.

Julian White, student at the Wesleyan German Department and producer of the WesGerman podcast, said the idea was initially proposed by faculty, but the segment writing and show operations are handled entirely by students.

“We knew it should be roughly 30 minutes long, and accessible to a broader (non German-speaking) audience, so we decided to have each student write and record their own small segment on an aspect of German/Austrian culture in which they are interested in English. For the first episode we had Musik, Politik, Kunst, and Gespräch. Our big catch for the Oktober episode was Hannah Landel's Austrian grandmother, who gave an interview about her experiences during the rule of the Nazis entirely in German.”

Future segments will include an Empfehlungen segment, where Julian plans to recommend popular German-language tv shows, and crewmate, Hannah, will be sharing German-language poetry.

Julian says the podcast crew has been fortunate to have the guidance of Assistant Professor Martin Bäumel, AATG Member, and the advocacy of Adjunct Professor Iris Bork-Goldfield, AATG Member, Chair of the German Studies program at Wesleyan and AATG-Northeast Regional Representative.

Executive Director Update I want to express my gratitude to everyone at AATG. I first want to express my thanks to the AATG staff as they work tirelessly to adapt to the challenges that 2020 has presented. Our office is not only focusing on reacting to the challenges, but making changes that are sustainable in the future. We are committed to upgrading and improving our operations and you will see these operational changes roll out throughout the coming year.

My sincere gratitude also goes to the amazing educators in our association who have shouldered burdens and lifted their communities up during 2020. We see you, hear you, and are

proud of the work you are doing!

In Cherry Hill, we’re looking at 2021 with some degree of optimism. We are planning, despite continued challenges we all face, to expand programs in certain areas. Our new fundraising initiatives will focus on how we can support German throughout the United States, at every level.

On our new website, you will find funding and grant opportunities in three areas: teaching and program building, student funding, and professional development. AATG will regularly post updates there with internal and external opportunities. We are working with various affiliated organizations to get as many resources for our teacher and students. Please check these pages for current opportunities and don’t hesitate to apply!

It’s in times like these when you see how impactful our organization can be. We need each other, rely on each other, and can learn from each other. AATG is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication in spring 2021 of Augenblicke: German through Film, Media, and Texts, by Christina Frei, Bridget Swanson, and Glenn Levine. A cooperative project between the authors, its adopters, and the AATG, Augenblicke is a comprehensive curriculum for the introductory through intermediate university levels of German. Based on insights and findings from research in applied linguistics and language pedagogy and centered on best practices for collaborative and active learning scenarios, Augenblicke helps learners develop personally meaningful intercultural communicative competence in German through Intermediate Mid to High (ACTFL) or B1 to lower B2 (CERF).

Augenblicke is available in both a traditional print and e-book form and is accompanied by a fully integrated online learning platform. In addition, adopters also have access to a continually-updated repository of ancillary materials created and openly shared by colleagues. The curriculum proves highly adaptable to different sorts of programs (inperson, hybrid, or fully remote/online), and can be implemented over two, three, or four semesters.

As a not-for-profit endeavor, the price the student pays is based on the cost of print/ebook production and sharing, with a small fraction of the cost going to the AATG to support future and current teachers of German at all levels.

AATG and Concordia Language Villages are proudly partnering to offer scholarships for both in-person and virtual village experiences in German language and culture for high school students during the summer of 2021!

Given continuing pandemic-related uncertainties regarding safety and travel to Germany, AATG’s traditional awards through the PAD (Pädagogischer Austauschdienst) will not be available in 2021. AATG will continue to explore travel options through the spring of 2021 as conditions warrant. Our partnership with Concordia ensures that National German Exam prizewinners will be eligible for an immersive language learning experience to recognize their achievements.

“Als Kleinkind gab es immer am letzten Samstag im November den großen Backtag für den Advent bei meiner Oma zu Hause, die in Bamberg aufwuchs, und nach den harten Kriegsjahren in die USA nach Michigan umzog.

An dem Tag machten wir Enkelkinder eifrig mit. Ich kann mich noch heute stark an den Tag erinnern, an dem ich zum ersten Mal an der Kurbel des Fleischwolfs drehen durfte und zusah, wie die ersten Plätzchen herauskamen. Das war eine Art Übergangsritual. Die Oma schnitt sie vorsichtig mit einem Gemüsemesser ab, legte sie aufs Backblech, und erzählte von früheren Jahren, in denen es keinen Krieg gab. Dieses Jahr gebe ich in meiner eigenen Familie die Tradition weiter. Unsere vierjährige Tochter Hildegard wird heuer eingeladen, zum ersten Mal den Fleischwolf zum Einsatz zu bringen. “ Adam Orange, East Lansing, Michigan

“My great aunt and uncle were vital parts of the childhoods my siblings and I experienced. Tante Käthe and

Onkel Willi had met as war refugees in Salzburg and had gotten married there. When they immigrated to the United States in 1955, they began to open their home to others, striving to be hospitable to all. I remember as a little child that I was amazed at the kindnesses that the two showed to everyone, fully independent of any biases. They welcomed people that others would not, and I think this hospitality came from their faith and their experiences. They truly accepted people. Part of that acceptance was manifested yearly in the dozens and dozens of cookies that Tante Käthe would bake before Christmas... Springerle, Spitzbuben, Lebkuchen, Zimtsterne, vanille Kipferl, as well as American classics like fudge, divinity, chocolate crinkles, sugar cookies with colored glazes, and peanut butter cookies. When I was in college, tins of Tante Käthe's cookies would arrive just before final exams, and there was always much rejoicing by my roommates and me. My aunt's standard cookie repertoire included 15 different varieties annually. When she was in her mid eighties, Tante Käthe cut back to only 12 varieties, and Onkel Willi had to comfort her, telling her that she was most definitely not a failure. WIE GUT IST LECKER? Learning about sustainability and food auf Deutsch ''Essen'' ist eines der beliebtesten Themen im Deutschunterricht und nicht ohne Grund. Es geht dabei nicht um ein Verstärken von existierenden Stereotypen, wie Bratwurst und Bier. Vielmehr bietet das Thema vielfältige Möglichkeiten, Klischees zu dekonstruieren und zur selbst-reflexiven und kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen Diskursen, wie zum Beispiel ''Nachhaltigkeit'', anzuregen.

Diesen Herbst haben wir drei Module mit interaktiven Aufgaben für Schüler*innen an High Schools zum Thema ''Nachhaltiges Essen'' veröffentlicht. Die interaktiven Arbeitsblätter richten sich an Schüler*innen im dritten Lernjahr Deutsch oder höher und können sowohl im projektorientierten Präsenzunterricht als auch im virtuellen Unterricht eingesetzt werden.

Auch laden wir Schüler*innen dazu ein, an unserem Kochwettbewerb ''Wie gut ist lecker?'' teilzunehmen und uns ihre Beiträge zur Veröffentlichung auf einem echten deutschen Kochblog zu schicken!

EBAN HOLT IDO-GOLD AUF NIVEAU A2 Eine Teilnehmerin aus den USA - Eban Ebssa, Schülerin an der Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia – hat in diesem Jahr die Internationale Deutscholympiade (IDO) auf dem Niveau A2 für sich entschieden. Am Finale der IDO, dem weltweit größten Wettbewerb der deutschen Sprache, der 2020 zum ersten Mal

TF: Was war die schwierigste Aufgabe für dich?

EE: Obwohl alles in einem unerwarteten Format war, hat das IDO-Team kreative Aufgaben für uns organisiert.

Deshalb fühlten sich die Aufgaben nicht wie Aufgaben an, sondern wie Aktivitäten. Aber alles hat seine Herausforderungen. Die Kunstwerk-Aktivität am ersten Wettbewerbstag war schwer hochzuladen (es gibt immer technische Schwierigkeiten), aber Thomas und Walter vom IDO-Team waren sehr unterstützend. Und am zweiten Gruppenarbeit Wettbewerbstag hatte ich ein bisschen Angst, dass jemandes Internet während unserer Präsentation getrennt wird, aber glücklicherweise ist alles gut gelaufen und ich hatte eine tolle Zeit mit Sóley und Ndèye! Ich würde sagen, es gab keine Aufgabe, die für mich am schwierigsten war, sondern alles war angenehm herausfordernd.

TF: Was war dein persönliches IDO-Highlight?

EE: Ich habe so viele Highlights (Band-Workshops, Live Global, als Dr. Görgen mich als Gewinner ernannt hat, usw!), aber ich werde hier nur eins beschreiben. Meine beste IDO Highlight war natürlich die anderen Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen kennenzulernen. Wir haben viel miteinander ausgetauscht — Kulturen, Memes, und Deutschkenntnisse! Aber das Beste an diesem Highlight ist, dass es nach der IDO immer noch passiert. Ich bleibe mit ihnen per WhatsApp in Kontakt und wir reden über alles, von Gemälde und Haustiere bis Donuts und Schule.

TF: Was wünschst du dir für deine Zukunft?

EE: Ich mag Computerprogrammieren und Statistik und möchte in Zukunft vielleicht Informatik unterrichten oder Datenwissenschaftlerin werden. Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, welchen Beruf ich möchte, aber ich weiß,

dass ich an einer Universität Informatik studieren möchte. Ich möchte sowohl in Deutschland als auch in den USA studieren und suche Auslandsstudienprogramme.

Die nächste Internationale Deutscholympiade findet in Hamburg statt. In einer nationalen Vorrunde im Herbst 2021 werden die beiden besten Deutschlernenden ermittelt, die für die USA im Sommer 2022 dort antreten dürfen. Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) Die Wahrheit des Sprichwortes „neue Herausforderungen erfordern neue Ideen“ hat sich in den letzten neun Monaten bereits mehrfach offenbart. Wir Fachberatungen der ZfA in den USA möchten in den folgenden Beiträgen zeigen, welche erfolgreichen Wege wir und die von der ZfA unterstützen Schulen zur Förderung vom Deutschunterricht gefunden haben, sei es bei der Durchführung von DaF-Projekten oder schulischen Prüfungen, beim Hybrid-Unterricht oder dem Einsatz der Teaching Assistants aus Deutschland.

Entkommen – auch angekommen?

Fünf Jahre nach dem berühmten Kanzlerinnenzitat „Wir haben so vieles geschafft – wir schaffen das!“ stellt sich die Frage: „Haben wir es geschafft?“ Zu diesem Thema beantworteten zwei geflüchtete Jugendliche aus Deutschland die Fragen der Teilnehmer*innen eines Online- Workshops des Samstagsschulverbandes GASANC.

Tarek (20) hat sich mit 15 allein aus Syrien nach Deutschland aufgemacht. In der ostsyrischen Stadt Deir ez-Zor aufgewachsen, flüchtete er vor dem IS und der Zwangsrekrutierung als Soldat der Terrormiliz nach Deutschland. Dort angekommen, lernte er schnell Deutsch, hat mittlerweile viele Freunde und engagiert sich jetzt selbst für Geflüchtete. Er nennt Bremen, wo er seitdem lebt, seine Heimat.

Der afghanische Jugendliche Ali (20) machte sich zur selben Zeit mit seinen Eltern und seiner damals fünfjährigen Schwester auf den beschwerlichen Weg vom Iran über die Balkanroute auf den Weg. Auf die Frage, ob sie „es“ geschafft haben, antworten sie: Noch nicht ganz, aber sie seien auf einem guten Weg. Tarek beendet im kommenden Jahr seine Ausbildung zum Bürokaufmann und macht nebenbei das Fachabitur. Ali geht seit diesem Sommer auf ein Berufsgymnasium für Pädagogik. Er möchte gern Lehrer werden.

Die beiden Jugendlichen hatten im Sommer einen OnlineAustausch mit Jugendlichen aus San Diego und Newport Beach. „Es war sehr spannend, etwas über das Leben von Jugendlichen in den USA zu erfahren“, sagt Tarek. Für die Jugendlichen in Kalifornien war es interessant, von Gleichaltrigen direkt zu hören, was sie sonst nur aus dem Internet, dem Fernsehen oder in didaktisierten Arbeitsblättern für den DSD- Unterricht erfahren haben.

Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) Virtuelle Science Show in der Deutschen Samstagsschule Houston, Texas Am Samstag, 24. Oktober 2020 trafen sich 100 SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen der DSS Houston zu einem außergewöhnlichen Deutschunterricht.

Jo Hecker, der bekannte Wissenschaftsjournalist aus Hagen, der bereits mehrfach für die Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) durch die USA reiste und in Schulen seine naturwissenschaftlichen Experimente auf Deutsch vorstellte, bietet nun – bedingt durch die CoronaPandemie - seine berühmten Science Shows online an.

Im Rahmen des Netzwerk-Deutsch-Projekts, gefördert durch das Auswärtige Amt und die ZfA, fand nun die erste virtuelle Science Show in Houston statt. Nachdem alle 100 Teilnehmer eingeloggt waren, konnte die Show nach der Begrüßung durch die Fachberaterin Susanne Dreyer beginnen.

Gebannt schauten die kleinen und großen Kunststoff ist nicht doof! … weil er ein Gedächtnis hat: Jo Hecker demonstriert, wie sich ein Kunststoffbecher bei Hitze zu seiner ursprünglichen Form – einer Scheibe – Schüler*innen dabei zu, wie saure Gurken zu zusammenzieht. Fotomontage: Jo Hecker leuchten beginnen, wenn man sie an eine Steckdose anschließt und es wurde mitgefiebert, was aus dem Styropor Frosch wird, wenn man ihn in einem Schnellkochtopf zum Kochen bringt.

Auch bei den Experimenten mit einer Infrarot-Kamera wurde mit großem Interesse verfolgt, wie Wärmestrahlung sichtbar wird und dass man mit Hilfe von Infrarot tief in den Weltraum sehen kann.

Es gab viele weitere interessante Experimente mit magischen Räumen und Zauberkunststücke mit Zahlenkarten, die die Schüler*innen zu Hause mit ihren Eltern und Geschwistern nachmachen können.

Abgeschlossen wurde die Vorführung mit einer Q&A Session, in der viele Schüler*innen die Möglichkeit nutzten, auf Deutsch Fragen zu den Experimenten zu stellen und ihr Verständnis von Naturwissenschaft demonstrierten.

Am Ende waren sich alle einig: Wenn wissenschaftliche Sachverhalte auf Deutsch so interessant und verständlich dargestellt werden ist Deutschlernen gar nicht schwer.

Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) United Nations International School: Eine DSD-Schule in New York Unter der Schirmherrschaft der Vereinten Nationen und geleitet von ihren Idealen bietet die United Nations International School (UNIS) ein integratives und vielfältiges Lernumfeld, in dem Exzellenz, Innovation, Kreativität gefördert werden.

Schüler*innen werden inspiriert und ausgebildet um eine aktive Kraft bei der Gestaltung einer besseren Welt zu werden.

Die Schule wird aktuell von mehr als 1.400 Schüler*innen aus mehr als 100 Nationen besucht. Die interkulturelle Vielfalt der Schule ist einzigartig.

Ein Schwerpunkt der UNIS ist das herausragend breite Sprachangebot.

Mehr als 50 Lehrkräfte unterrichten neun Sprachen. Mehrere Länder wie Spanien, Frankreich, Japan und Deutschland entsenden Lehrkräfte an die UNIS. Ein Kernbereich der UNIS ist das Angebot des International Baccalaureate (IB), die UNIS gehörte zu den Gründerschulen des IB. Das Deutschangebot der UNIS für die ca. 90 Schüler*innen wird über 3 Lehrkräfte abgesichert, eine Lehrkraft wird aus Deutschland entsandt.

Deutsch wird auf muttersprachlichem Niveau und als Fremdsprache angeboten. Seit vielen Jahren wird an der UNIS das Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz auf den Niveaustufen DSD I und DSD II angeboten.

Während die öffentlichen Schulen in New York Covid-19 bedingt erst verspätet mit Präsenzangeboten in das neue Schuljahr gestartet sind, hat die UNIS direkt nach den Ferien den Unterricht mit einem Hybrid-Modell begonnen. Aufgrund der hervorragenden technischen Ausstattung und einem sehr durchdachten Hygienekonzept sind die ersten Wochen des Schuljahres bisher ohne Probleme gelaufen. Hoffen wir, dass dies so bleibt.

Meet Young Germany auch in Kentucky Frederik Schellmann, Student an der Universität Würzburg, ist der diesjährige Teilnehmer des Programms „Meet Young Germany in Your Classroom“ (früher: Teaching Assistant) in Kentucky. Er ist seit kurzem dabei, sich in das Schulleben der Bowling Green High School zu gewöhnen. Das scheint ihm gut zu gefallen: „Ich bin jetzt seit drei Wochen in Kentucky und erlebe jeden Tag etwas Neues.

Die Bowling Green High School ist top, meine Gastfamilie genial und außerdem gibt es jede Menge zu entdecken. Covid-19 ist zwar eine Einschränkung, trotzdem läuft das Leben hier weiter und jeder bemüht sich das beste aus der Situation zu machen.

Meine Bucket List ist deswegen endlos lang ... was super ist!“

Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) So geht’s – mit Erfolg zum DSD durch MYGs! In der Region USA Südost zeigt das Konzept der engeren Verknüpfung der Arbeit im Rahmen des DSD Programms (Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK) mit der Tätigkeit der neuen MYGs (Teaching Assistants) des Pädagogischen Austauschdienstes erste Erfolge.

Die vier MYGs, welche an sehr unterschiedlichen Schulen in North Carolina und Georgia eingesetzt sind, erhalten über ihre „normale“ Tätigkeit hinaus, die Gelegenheit, bei der DSD I und DSD II- Arbeit dabei zu sein. Durch die Verknüpfung der MYGs mit verschiedenen Schülergruppen und DSD- erfahrenen Lehrern während des DSD-Online-Unterrichts, profitieren nicht nur die Schüler von den angehenden jungen deutschen Lehrern, sondern auch die MYGs erhalten einen Einblick in den Deutschunterricht an DSD-Schulen und in das DSD-Programm. Um die Schüler und Lehrer entsprechend unterstützen zu können, erhielten die MYGs gezielte Fortbildungen durch die Fachberatung Atlanta und es gelang ihnen, durch viel freiwillige zusätzliche Arbeit, ein wichtiger Bestandteil während des DSD-Online-Unterrichts an den ausgewählten DSD-Schulen zu werden.

Ein sehr erfolgversprechendes, gewinnbringendes Konzept für alle Beteiligten, welches darüber hinaus viele inspirierende Kontakte ermöglicht hat und Lust auf die weitere Zusammenarbeit macht.

Liebe MYGs, vielen Dank für eure Bereitschaft, eure Flexibilität und euren Einsatz. Liebe beteiligte DSD-Schulen und DSDLehrer, vielen Dank für eurer Engagement und eure erfolgreiche Arbeit vor Ort! Weiter so!

Außergewöhnliche Ideen in außergewöhnlichen Zeiten Die Schließung vieler Schulgebäude wegen der Covid-1-Pandemie stellt die deutschen Sprachschulen, die seit Jahren ihren wöchentlichen Deutschunterricht in den gemieteten Räumen von öffentlichen, örtlichen Schulen durchgeführt haben, vor ein zusätzliches Problem, wenn es sich um die Durchführung der Deutschen Sprachdiplomprüfungen der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD) handelt.

Die Deutsche Sprachschule Bloomfield, MI, die 1999 als non-profit gegründet wurde, beschäftigt 32 Lehrkräfte und bietet jährlich mehr als 400 Schüler*innen Deutschunterricht auf einem hohen Niveau. Seit Ende März kann der Unterricht nicht mehr in den Räumen der örtlichen Middle School durchgeführt werden, sondern findet online statt.

Für die mündlichen DSD I-Prüfungen wurde eine ungewöhnliche, aber dank der Flexibilität der Schüler*innen und Lehrkräfte, sowie des schönen Wetters in einem der letzten, sonnigen Herbst-Wochenenden gelungene Lösung gefunden: Die 20 Einzelprüfungen erfolgten im Freien auf dem Gelände des Westwynd Golf Course. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an alle Schülerinnen und Schüler für die bestandene Prüfung!
