DIE UNTERRICHTSPRAXIS/ TEACHING GERMAN

The May issue 2023 (56.1) has been published. This issue introduces a new type of article — the Forum Article

These short articles of about 2,000 words are always in response to a call for papers, which sets the topic for a forum with different voices We had issued the call for papers under the title "(Re-)Discoveries in a Time of Disruption" in November 2022. The 21 Forum Articles of the latest Unterrichtspraxis focus on two broad 'disruptions': COVID-19 and the enrollment crisis in German studies and language learning. In the context of COVID-19, several instructors rediscovered reading practices that they had abandoned in prepandemic curricula (Elizabeth Mittman; Renata Fuchs; Alyssa Howards) Martina Caspari went back to the natural approach and total physical response of the 1980s. Other authors discussed the inclusion of activities that support student mental health, community engagement, and accessibility in foreignlanguage learning (Heidi Denzel & Nicolay Ostrau; Penelope Kolovou; Jacob van der Kolk; Sabrina Link; Kathleen Condray). Colleagues reflected on the benefits of the pivot to technology-enhanced teaching-and-learning during the pandemic (Albrecht Classen; Adam Oberlin; Alysha Holmquist; Felicitas Starr-Egger; Beate Brunow & Kerstin Kuhn-Brown; Abhimanyu Sharma). German programs had been shrinking already before the pandemic. The rapid transition to online learning under lockdown conditions generated additional pressures on teachers of German.

However, the use of simple technologies also triggered positive change (Lynn Kutch). Authors showed how they are adapting the German program to make them more attractive to students (Melissa Elliot; Karin Schutjer, Kaleigh Bangor, & Robert Lemon). Such opportunities often lie in the practical utility of learning German (Anita McChesney; Marija Stanojevic Veselinovic). Kiley Kost, Seth Peabody, and Juliane Schicker re-imagine the firstyear German curriculum by focusing on equity and inclusion. This last Forum Article of this issue bridges the topics of enrollment crisis and diversity, equity, and inclusion The latter will be the primary focus of these short articles in the second issue (56.2) of this volume of Die Unterrichtspraxis / Teaching German in November. We anticipate also having Forum Articles in May of next year; a call for papers on the broad topic of student recruitment and retention in both the secondary and post-secondary sectors of German-language education will come out soon. Thank you so much for the support to attend the GLIB seminar 2023 sponsored by Notre Dame University and the Max Kade foundation It took place at the Literaturhaus Berlin located at Fasanenstr 23 in Berlin

Charlottenburg It began with an introduction of the program for 2 weeks and an introduction of the 17 participants, who consisted of German higher ed educators and graduate students The focus of the two week seminar was the current literature production in all types of media, including film, television and radio

The seminar work consisted of an interview and text reading of a best selling and award winning author, Antja Strubel This was followed by an interview of speakers from book agents from Graf und Graf We visited Der Tagesspiegel and attended an editors meeting as observers followed by a discussion with Literature Kritik, Gregor Dotzauer The group visited the Fontane-Archive in Potsdam and attended various theater performances performed by professionals and students. We also met with representatives from Suhrkamp Verlag and heard a reading from the author, Dilek Güngör We had interviews and discussions with owners of bookstores, translators and various publishers.

In conclusion, this program was full of activities and as a member of the AATG community, I was able to network and hear about many university and college German programs and the classes that they offer. I was able to immerse myself in the German language for the entire 2 weeks which helped me to improve my pronunciation skills I was able to build a new and current vocabulary for media and literature. During this time we also visited 3 different theater productions and I was able to reflect on the different theater styles with fellow participants The level of German by nonnative speakers was amazing and the intellectual level of critical thinking was impressive and it really helped me to understand what is going on in German departments at 4 year universities The entire program brought me new insight and allowed me to connect with other college teachers and learn about PhD programs at Universities.

In the future, I think that this grant is great being used for non-native speakers who are enrolled in total immersion programs to refresh or improve their German in Germany This is something that can’t really be done in the US to the same extent The support from AATG is greatly appreciated and this would not have been possible without your support "

Summer Study in Germany

More than 150 students embarked on the journey to Germany this summer, ranging from high school students in AATG's Summer Study Program, to the National German Exam Scholarship recipients in the International Prizewinner Program and the Deutschland Plus cohort, and the undergraduate students earning college credit during their four weeks in Bonn with our College Summer Program

Besides exploring authentic German family life and attending classes at a local school, participants also explore new cities, cuisines, and customs, and get to unwind during indoor and outdoor leisure activities with their new German pals

This summer, we are excited to provide professional development opportunities for our student instructors For the third time, we are hosting our own SPARK Summer School which prepares students to implement SPARK programs in their communities in the fall In addition, SPARK provides stipends for more than 15 students and teachers to attend Middlebury Sommerschule and the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik We would like to congratulate the recipients of our SPARK stipends and wish them all the best as they learn and grow to develop their language and teaching skills

For those of you who would like to learn more about SPARK, please take a look at two contributions in the most recent issue of the Unterrichtspraxis which describe the impact of implementing SPARK In “Beyond teaching heritage speakers: Prioritizing diversity in an elementary school–university SPARK teaching partnership,” Dr Pascale Lafountain, Associate Professor of German and SPARK Lab Director at Montclair State University, writes: “Building on the diversity of our university’s student population which includes 51% students of color and that of our local community, our SPARK Lab’s emphasis is on intercultural awareness and on promoting opportunities to diversify the German teaching field through curricular choices, positive representation, and program accessibility ” In “Training transferable skills: Using “SPARK” as a steppingstone to career readiness, social engagement, and program relevance,” Dr Anita McChesney, Associate Professor of German and SPARK Lab Director at Texas Tech University concludes: “Students demonstrated an awareness of the transferable skills they had gained through this experience and the professional and societal benefits Their responses also underscore their recognition of personal gains from such service opportunities, such as increased confidence and leadership opportunities One student reported that a potential employer specifically asked about SPARK on his résumé at a job interview ” These two articles add important insights to the publication from 2022 which described the implementation of the SPARK Lab at the University of Utah, co-authored by Dr. Karin Baumgartner, Professor of German at the University of Utah, and her students

Liebe Kolleginnen, liebe Kollegen, mit Abschluss des Schuljahres müssen wir uns von unserem langjährigen Kollegen Helmut Kehlenbeck verabschieden und begrüßen die Robert Service High School in Anchorage, Alaska als neue Schule in unserer DSD-Gemeinschaft.

Wir wünschen allen Kolleginnen und Kollegen erholsame Ferien und einen guten Start ins neue Schuljahr!

Von Richmond nach New York und jetzt?

Unserer langjähriger Kollege Helmut Kehlenbeck, seit 1.August 2017 als Fachberater in den USA, beendet nach 6 erfolgreichen Jahren seine Tätigkeit. Susanne Dreyer, Fachberatung Houston, hat ihn zum Abschied interviewt.

SD: Lieber Helmut, deine Zeit als Fachberater der ZfA in den USA geht am 31. Juli 2023 zu Ende. Was sind deine Pläne für die Zukunft?

Es ist geplant, dass ich noch zwei weitere Jahre für die ZfA in einer Stadt in Europa tätig sein werde. Anschließend gehe ich in den Ruhestand und meine Frau und ich werden wieder ganz nach Bremen zurückkehren. Ich bin sicher, dass ich dann ehrenamtlich tätig sein werde, um zugewanderten Menschen in Deutschland die sprachliche Integration zu erleichtern.

SD: Du hast deine Tätigkeit an zwei Standorten ausgeübt. Kannst du davon berichten?

Beide Standorte haben auf unterschiedliche Weise einen besonderen Reiz gehabt. In Richmond, VA habe ich über die Anbindung an das Department of Education sehr viel über das amerikanische Schulwesen erfahren und gelernt. Außerdem haben meine Frau und ich dort sehr gute, bleibende Freunde gefunden und waren stark in das amerikanische Leben eingebunden.

Die von mir betreuten DSD-Schulen liegen aber in Washington DC, Boston sowie überwiegend im Großraum New York City. Seit dem Wechsel nach New York hat sich der Dienstreiseaufwand erheblich reduziert und ich kann viel intensiver auf eine andere Weise mit den DSD-Schulen zusammenarbeiten. Die Partnerorganisationen der ZfA haben alle Büros in New York City, dies war ein weiterer wichtiger Grund den Standort nach New York City zu verlegen.

Aufgrund der Pandemie hatten wir zunächst einsame Monate in dieser riesigen Stadt. Aber bereits von Beginn an haben wir das Leben in dieser vielschichtigen, spannenden und häufig auch anstrengenden Metropole geliebt.

SD: Kannst du kurz beschreiben, welche Aspekte deiner Tätigkeit als Fachberater dir die liebsten waren?

Die Tätigkeit als Fachberatung für Deutsch ist abwechslungsreich und bietet einen großen Gestaltungsrahmen. Besonders erfüllend war die Zusammenarbeit mit Schulleitungen und den Lehrkräften der DSD Schulen. Ich liebe aber auch die mündlichen Prüfungen zum DSD. Dort erfährt man so viel über die Interessen von Jugendlichen und es beeindruckt, mit welcher Leidenschaft und welchem Engagement Kinder und Jugendliche Deutsch lernen. Ich bin außerdem gerne auf Reisen unterwegs und schätze aber auch die Verwaltungstätigkeit. Kurz gesagt: Es war eine großartige Zeit.

SD: Was wirst du am meisten vermissen und worauf freust du dich?

Ich bin sehr dankbar, dass ich 6 Jahre diese abwechslungsreiche Tätigkeit als Fachberatung in diesem schönen, aufregenden und widersprüchlichen Leben ausführen durfte. Die Zeit in den USA hat mein und unser Leben nachhaltig geprägt und wir werden immer diesen Teil unseres Lebens vermissen und Sehnsucht haben. New York hat uns natürlich

auf besondere Weise in den Bann gezogen. Besonders freuen wir uns darauf, dass wir künftig wieder sehr viel näher bei unseren beiden Töchtern leben werden und wir freuen uns darauf wieder ganz in unser europäisches Leben einzutauchen.

SD: Du hast in den vergangenen 6 Jahren eine Vielzahl von Projekten durchgeführt. Welches waren für dich die wichtigsten und warum?

In Deutschland war ich viele Jahre als Oberschulrat in der Schulaufsicht tätig und habe viele Schulen in ihrer Schulentwicklung begleitet. In dieser Zeit habe ich hautnah erlebt, wie wichtig starke Schulleitungen für eine Schulentwicklung sind. Deshalb habe ich über die Sondermittel der Deutschen Botschaft drei Tagungen für die Schulleitungen der Deutschen Sprachschulen organisiert. Diese Tagungen, einmal auch gemeinsam mit kanadischen Schulleitungen, haben zur Stärkung der Deutschen Sprachschulen und zu deren Schulentwicklung beigetragen.

Ein zweiter wichtiger Baustein war das Angebot regelmäßiger DSD GOLD Kurse für Lehrkräfte der DSD-Schulen aus meiner Region, aber auch aus den gesamten USA. Jährlich habe ich einen DSD GOLD Kurs angeboten. Diese Blended-Learning Kurse tragen hervorragend dazu bei, Lehrkräfte auf die Vorbereitung und Durchführung von DSD vorzubereiten und eine schulübergreifende Zusammenarbeit zu verbessern.

DSD GOLD Kurs DSD II – Erstes Präsenzseminar in Chicago

Zur Qualitätssicherung des DSD Programms weltweit bietet die ZfA seit Jahren sehr erfolgreich sogenannte DSD GOLD Kurse für Lehrkräfte an DSD Schulen an. DSD GOLD ist eine nach dem Blended-Learning-Prinzip konzipierte Fortbildung auf der PASCH-Lernplattform.

Auch an den DSD-Schulen in den USA werden diese Kurse eingesetzt. Erstmalig bieten in diesem Schuljahr die Fachberatungen aus New York und San Francisco, Helmut und Kehlenbeck und Gabi Maiss-Minkler einen USA weiten DSD GOLD Kurs DSD II an.

30 Lehrkräfte aus 18 DSD Schulen aus den USA nehmen an diesem Kurs teil, der im Herbst 2022 mit der Online-Phase gestartet ist. Bereits während der ersten Onlinephase zum Lese- und Hörverstehen lernten sich die Lehrkräfte kennen und tauschten ihre Unterrichtserfahrungen in Forumsbeiträgen aus. Höhepunkt dieser Kurse sind die beiden Präsenzseminare. Sie bieten die Möglichkeit des persönlichen Kennenlernens und vertiefen die schulübergreifende Zusammenarbeit. Das erste Präsenzseminar fand 04.-06.11.2022 im DANK Haus German American Cultural Center in Chicago statt. Das DANK Haus stellte geeignete Räumlichkeiten zur Verfügung und sorgte für einen reibungslosen Ablauf des Seminars.

Themenschwerpunkt dieses Präsenzseminars waren das Lese- und Hörverstehen zur Vorbereitung auf das DSD II. Es wurden Unterrichtserfahrungen ausgetauscht und viele Übungen und Spiele zu diesen Bereichen praktisch erprobt. Ein weiterer Themenschwerpunkt bildete die Wortschatzarbeit.

Das gemeinsame Seminarwochenende hat die schulübergreifende Zusammenarbeit weiter intensiviert. Mittlerweile befindet sich der Kurs in der 2. Onlinephase mit den Themenschwerpunkten schriftlichen und mündliche Kommunikation. Der DSD GOLD Kurs DSD II endet im Frühjahr mit dem 2. Präsenzseminar in Seattle

DSD GOLD Kurse bestehen aus drei jeweils eigenständigen Kursen:

- Kurs DSD I

- Grundlagen der Unterrichtsentwicklung

- Kurs DSD II

Über die Kurse erfolgt eine praxisorientierte Weiterqualifizierung der DaF-Lehrkräfte im DSD-Programm.

Deutsche Botschafterin überreicht PASCH-Plakette in Alaska

Die deutsche Botschafterin in den USA, Dr. Emily Haber, hatte zusammen mit der ZfA Fachberatung San Francisco, Gabriele Maiss-Minkler, die große Ehre, in einer feierlichen Zeremonie der Robert Service High School in Anchorage, Alaska die PASCH-Plakette überreichen zu dürfen.

Die Robert Service High School ist damit eine der Neuzugänge im Netz der Initiative „Schulen: Partner der Zukunft“ (PASCH) und die zweite PASCH-Schule in Alaska. In Anchorage ist es somit möglich, von der Vorschule bis zum Abschluss der High School kontinuierlich an einem deutschen Sprachprogramm teilzunehmen und die Prüfungen zum DSD I und DSD II abzulegen. Die DSD I Prüfung findet an der Rilke Schule statt, der weit über Alaska hinaus bekannten deutschen K-8 Immersionsschule. Die weiterführende Schule für die Schüler:innen der Rilke-Schule ist die Robert-Service High School, die das Immersionsprogramm im Deutschunterricht fortführt und seit November 2022 den Schüler:innen die Teilnahme an der DSD II-Prüfung anbieten kann.

Dank gilt den Lehrkräften Fauna Reynvaan und Evelyn Newhouse und ihrem überdurchschnittlichen Engagement und den Schülerinnen und Schülern, die die deutsche Sprache zu einem wesentlichen Element ihrer Bildungsbiografie gemacht haben

Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung hatten die Schüler:innen die Möglichkeit, der Botschafterin ihre Schule und im Besonderen einige der speziellen Programme der High School vorstellen zu können, wie beispielsweise die Biomedical Career Academy, Seminar School und die NJROTC Leadership Academy.

In der anschließenden Frage- und Antwort-Runde beeindruckten die Jugendlichen die Botschafterin mit ihren hervorragenden Deutschkenntnissen und ihrem Wissen über Deutschland und die deutsche Kultur. Die Fragen an Frau Dr. Haber waren breit gefächert: Neben der Frage, was das amerikanische Lieblingsgericht der Botschafterin ist, ging es unter anderem auch um das Engagement der deutschen Regierung in der Polarregion und Alaska, den Ausstieg aus der Atomkraft im Hinblick auf die Energiekrise in Deutschland und den akademischen und beruflichen Werdegang der Botschafterin.
