President’s Letter Dear Friends and Fellow AATG Members, Spring is indeed arriving in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, and with the changing of the seasons, there does seem to be an emerging hope.

I know full well that we are not out of the hard times of the past year, and that far into the future there will be many lives impacted deeply by what has all happened, but I feel that a turn is springing to life. It could indeed be due to the change of the seasons, as well as progress that we have made.

Let’s choose to pursue the changes that are happening, learn from those that have happened, and dream with action as we move forward.

Our organization has been making great strides over the past year in many different areas. Like the rebirths felt in the springtime, many things will become fully realized in the coming months. I would like to highlight some of the items and actions that have happened over the past year and draw your attention to things that are springing to life within the AATG. In the last year the issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) moved into the attention areas of many people.

AATG has adopted a policy statement on the importance of recognizing DEI issues and our organizational commitment to creating environments in which, and opportunities for which, all feel welcome and valued. The amendment to add a DEI officer to the AATG Board of Directors was approved by a strong majority of those who

voted. The Board and I worked out specific responsibilities for this new position and those will be included in the policies handbook.

By the time you read this letter, there will be a six-member DEI committee that will work with the DEI officer to identify areas within the structure of our organization that can be improved to better reflect the broad spectrum of our membership. A member of the Board of Directors will lead this committee until the actual DEI officer takes office on January 1, 2022.

We are moving forward with fundraising to establish a dedicated professional development fund for members. The AATG has various funds that have directed purposes, but we have never had a fund that is solely dedicated to professional development. I want to express my deep gratitude to the many chapters and members who have donated to this new fund, realizing that even in these hard times we need to plan for a brighter future.

Highlighted in this newsletter are the many programs that are being offered to members. True, we are not able to offer many travel-study options this coming summer, but our 2021 programs offer possibilities for each and every member. Some of these programs are continuations, or new versions of previous options, while others are completely new for 2021.

Please take time to study over the program offerings, and feel free to reach out to each program point person for further information. A complete 2021 offerings list is found on our website.

Last spring I wrote a letter about hope to you all, and it was filled with some very personal writings and recollections from me. This has not been an easy or comfortable year for many, and I know it all is not over yet.

While the new normal slowly establishes itself, I hope sincerely that you will avail yourself of opportunities that come to you through your AATG membership. We truly are all together in this, and I believe we are going to come through it all much stronger.

Thank you for being a member of AATG, and please consider letting at least a bit of the revival of springtime impact you for good.

Read the grant specifics to ensure that you pre-qualify, then apply for the desired grant through a form on our website. Member login is required to access most grant forms. Our 2021 grant application process is simple and accessible to members of all backgrounds and career stages.

Once you are notified that you have received a grant, you can start planning.

This may involve additional steps, like purchasing airfare or submitting additional information to the AATG.

During this stage, you take part in the grant activity or project and document the experience with photos, notes, and/or receipts for reimbursement.

This will set you up for your reporting stage of your grant, which shows AATG grant donors the value of funding grants for German teachers in the U.S.

Missouri AATG: Looking Back, Looking Forward

By Angel“Until Lane, we President, AZ Chapter can finally meet in person again, the Missouri chapter is working to stay connected.”

As with so many aspects of daily life, this school year was a challenge for our chapter. Our members are scattered across the state of Missouri and include teachers from the “Metro East” region—our neighbors directly across the Mississippi River from St. Louis in southwestern Illinois. Our members teach at both public and private schools, from kindergarten through the university level, and ranging from large suburban districts to small rural towns. Many of us teach in schools where we are the only German teacher in our building, and so we definitely look forward to meeting and exchanging ideas with our colleagues whenever possible.

A highlight for the members of our chapter each year is the fall workshop hosted by Larry Marsh of the German Culture Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Although we missed meeting in person, we enjoyed our workshop on a Saturday in

circumstances of the 2020-21 school year.

When our chapter met this past February, again via Zoom, many teachers relayed the dizzying speed with which changes had occurred throughout the school year. While some schools

opened for in-person instruction at the beginning of the year, others remained virtual or adopted hybrid instruction. Several opened their doors, only to close again in a matter of weeks. In addition, there were the issues of students who were forced to quarantine for periods of time, which posed additional challenges for instruction.

All of this has brought changes for language instruction. We have adapted to new technology and instruction methods. Our teachers have worked to bond and celebrate with students through virtual ‘Fests’ and online games. Students working remotely have Zoomed in to class to participate in instruction. For those of us instructing in person, classroom routine has adapted to social distancing and face masks. Clubs and special events have moved online, but still have a devoted following among many students.

Through it all, our partners at AATG, the German Culture Center, and the Goethe Institut have offered us chances to connect through online workshops, discussion panels, and exchange opportunities. This spring, the

Sister Cities program between St. Louis and Stuttgart is working to host an online exchange between teachers of both nations to share their pandemic experiences. Until we can finally meet in person again, the Missouri chapter is working to stay connected.

Field trips have been a challenge for most, but our previous chapter President, Gudrun Sherman, was able to take this lucky group from Nerinx Hall High School to see a special exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum.

AATG Members: Interested in funded methodology training in Leipzig?

The Mit Deutsch in die Zukunft seminar is designed for undergraduate students (6+ semesters) and graduate students planning a career teaching German, and new teachers with 3 years experience or less. The 2021 seminar is being planned with an online component taking place over several weekends during the summer, followed by a two-week seminar in Leipzig in early September. Given the pandemic, the traditional mid-summer program has been moved to September to allow for a possible in-person experience, depending on the easing of travel restrictions.

Open Mind, Open Heart, Open World

Everyone all over the world is talking about the pandemic, everyone sees the problems, and everyone notices the challenges. But in the middle of every challenge lies opportunity.

Right now we can’t travel internationally, which means we can’t visit other countries to fully immerse ourselves into a different culture. That seems to be an extra hardship on language learners and language teachers. But for German teachers in the U.S. and English teachers abroad, there is a way out of this dilemma— and one that benefits students as well. GAVE (German American Virtual Exchange) is a great opportunity, especially during these current times. Since the traditional German American Partnership Program (GAPP) can’t operate for the foreseeable future, the Pedagogical Exchange Service in Germany and the Goethe Institute in New York offer support and generous funding to their partner schools in both countries to conduct their exchange programs virtually. Because of this, international partnerships not only stand a good chance to survive, but even the chance to strengthen common bonds.

My co-sponsors in Bowling Green, Kentucky—German teachers Collin Smith (AATG Member) and Nicole May (Kentucky AATG Outstanding Teacher of the Year 2020 award winner)—and I are eager to make the most of the opportunity offered to us. So we get students on both sides of the ocean in touch; have them work on joint projects; encourage them to meet on platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Skype or via social media; and open the virtual doors for them into the world and culture of their target language.

They then sent the pendants to Greenwood High School in Bowling Green as a sign of friendship. Other teams produced short videos about their home countries, virtual presentations about their country’s history, digital brochures comparing cliches and truths about the people in their country, and more. By these exchanges, the students of both nations learned a lot about each other, and a serious interest in culture and language was fostered in the students.

The German American Virtual Exchange helps us to open our students’ minds into the unknown, to open their hearts to other people, and eventually open the door to the world. GAVE certainly is the opportunity that lies in the middle of difficulty. Go ahead and take it!

JOIN SPARK!

Get Involved

SPARK, a joint project by the Goethe-Institut and the AATG, aims to strengthen and increase interest in German and in the German teaching profession. SPARK offers a playful approach to German lessons in after-school programs—providing early access to language instruction and creating opportunities for students to learn German into advanced levels while at the same time encouraging students of German to consider a career as a German educator!

This spring, the SPARK Team welcomed Olga Liamkina as the regional coordinator for the Northeast. She joins our team of regional coordinators, Denise Larsson, Nella Spurlin and Peter Weise. Together with the SPARK Program Directors, Susanne Rinner and Thomas Flanagan, Denise, Nella, Olga and Peter support SPARK Labs and their partners.

Our 2021 spring kick-off event provided an opportunity to share information and get to know each other. In subsequent sessions, the SPARK team, SPARK Labs and many colleagues and partners are working together in order to share best practices, prepare teaching materials, and train and mentor our students to become SPARK teachers. Our goal is to create a network of students and teachers who spark the joy of speaking German and of engaging with the cultures of the Germanspeaking world to create sustainable and equitable educational opportunities for all students and to foster the transatlantic partnership.

Executive Director Report AATG is proud to represent German teachers in the U.S. We know what challenges you face and are committed to providing you with support through our programs and services. Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to point you to our 2021 program offerings on pages 3-4 of our newsletter and on our website. You will notice some changes.

Firstly, we are working to make our programs more accessible and streamlined. You are busy, we get it! We’ve eliminated as many hurdles as possible in our applications— like letters of reference for small grants. You will see that most applications can be completed by online form (AATG login required, so make sure your account is up-to-date). This should save you time and promote transparency in the programs we run.

Secondly, we’ve created a menu of program offerings showing both grant and donor-funded initiatives. You can see how active we’ve been, and the amazing support offered in 2021. This will give you a sense of the scope of our support programs and provide you with links, dates, and program descriptions. Please take advantage of these opportunities.

As AATG members, these programs are for you and your students!

Thirdly, we’ve provided a point of contact for our programs. If you are unsure about how a grant program works or what the program entails, reach out to program’s point person. They will be able to speak from experience and guide you through the process.

On behalf of the entire AATG staff, we want to thank you for your dedication to teaching German. We’ll show our daily gratitude to you through our continued focus on accessibility and quality program offerings. No matter what level you teach, whether you are new to the profession or retired, our aim is to make AATG your professional home.

News from the National Office AATG continues to operate with limited in-office time due to the ongoing pandemic. We are rotating our office visits to ensure continued operations and to ensure staff safety. We generally process mail orders 2-3 times weekly. As always, if you have a specific question, consult our staff page to reach out directly to the appropriate person!

One change you will notice on the staff page is that Mercedes Pokorny has been promoted to the Director of Operations, effective January 2021. Mercedes brings decades of dedication and experience to AATG and has been invaluable in ensuring that AATG operates smoothly before and during the pandemic. This promotion not only signals a recognition of her good work, but that she will continue to guide the organization and lead the operations of our programs and services to best serve our members. AATG is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication in Spring 2021 of Augenblicke: German through Film, Media, and Texts, by Christina Frei, Bridget Swanson, and Glenn Levine. A cooperative project between the authors, its adopters, and the AATG, Augenblicke is a comprehensive curriculum for the introductory through intermediate university levels of German.

Based on insights and findings from research in applied linguistics and language pedagogy and

centered on best practices for collaborative and active learning scenarios, Augenblicke helps learners develop personally meaningful intercultural communicative competence in German through Intermediate Mid to High (ACTFL) or B1 to lower B2 (CERF).

Augenblicke is available in both a traditional print and e-book form and is accompanied by a fully integrated online learning platform. In addition, adopters also have access to a continually-updated repository of ancillary materials created and openly shared by colleagues. The curriculum proves highly adaptable to different sorts of programs (in-person, hybrid, or fully remote/online), and can be implemented over two, three, or four semesters.

As a not-for-profit endeavor, the price the student pays is based on the cost of print/e-book

production and sharing, with a small fraction of the cost going to the AATG to support future and current teachers of German at all levels.

Gründen Sie ein grünes Startup mit Ihren

Schüler*innen oder entwickeln Sie gemeinsam ein Nachhaltigkeitsprojekt! Die Gewinnerteams erhalten ein wissenschaftliches Coaching und nehmen an einer virtuellen Konferenz teil.

Die Idee der Nachhaltigkeit ist heute wichtiger als jemals zuvor. Wir erleben ganz unmittelbar, wie sehr das Handeln von jedem einzelnen unser aller Wohlergehen beeinflusst. Entscheidungen, die wir jetzt treffen, haben zudem direkte Auswirkungen auf das Leben künftiger Generationen. Die Vereinten Nationen haben 17 Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung beschlossen und verfolgen gemeinsam eine große gemeinsame Mission: Gesellschaften weltweit sollen friedlich und nachhaltig zusammenleben. Die Reise des digitalen Wanderbusses geht in 2021 weiter!

Als einer der Höhepunkte des Jahres der deutsch-amerikanischen Freundschaft reiste der Wanderbus des Goethe-Instituts 2019 über 40.000 Kilometer durch die USA und besuchte dabei über 60 Schulen und Universitäten. Dank dieser Erfolgsgeschichte wurde der Wanderbus 2020 in ein virtuelles Angebot für Schulklassen weiterentwickelt.

Der Digitale Wanderbus bietet eine 3D-Welt, in der Lehrer*innen mit ihren Schüler*innen zusammen oder jeder einzeln an eigenen Geräten in eine Vielzahl von Themen eintauchen können wie Kultur, Sport, Geschichte, Wissenschaft und Politik. Natürlich bietet der Digitale Wanderbus auch spannende Spiele & Quizze und die Möglichkeit, auf unterhaltsame Weise Deutsch zu lernen.

Dieses Frühjahr wird eine neue Wanderbus-Version mit dem Fokus auf Karriere gelauncht – der “Karrierebus”! An verschiedenen Stationen im Bus können sich die Schüler*innen über die Möglichkeit eines Studiums an einer deutschen Universität erkunden, einen Einblick in die Forschung deutscher Forschungsinstitute erhalten und hautnah erleben, wie ein duales Ausbildungsprogramm in Deutschland und den USA aussieht.

Feiert den Jugendkunstmonat mit der Kinderuni!

Deutsch lernen durch Wissenschaft

Es ist wieder soweit – im März feiert der Jugendkunstmonat seinen 60. Geburtstag! Seit 1961 feiern Bildungseinrichtungen im ganzen Land die Künste. Die kostenlose Digitale Kinderuni des Goethe-Instituts hebt den Wert der Künste in einer Videovorlesung zum spannenden Thema Graffiti hervor. Die jungen Wissenschaftler lernen nicht nur unterschiedliche und kritische Denkfähigkeiten, multikulturelles Bewusstsein sowie technische und kommunikative Fähigkeiten, sondern auch noch Deutsch.

Das unterhaltsame, videobasierte Bildungsprogramm der Digitalen Kinderuni umfasst 30 Vorlesungen für Kinder von 8 bis 12 Jahren. Die angebotenen Fakultäten „Mensch“, „Natur“ und „Technik“ und die sorgfältig ausgewählten Videosequenzen

entsprechen der Erfahrungswelt von jungen Schüler*innen.

Es gibt verschiedene Wege, an der Kinderuni zu studieren: • auf Englisch: Jede der 30 Vorlesungen erklärt ein wissenschaftliches Thema in englischer Sprache und lässt dabei spielerisch einige deutsche Wörter einfließen.

• auf Deutsch: Studierende können die Vorlesung auch auf Deutsch ansehen und lernen dabei neue, schwierigere deutsche Wörter. in anderen Sprachen: aktuell gibt es 6 weitere Sprachversionen. Spanisch und Französisch werden bald hinzukommen.

Untertitel sind auf Deutsch und Englisch verfügbar. Das erfolgreiche Abschließen einer Vorlesung bringt die KinderuniKarriere vorwärts: vom Status Student*in, zu Bachelor, Master, Doktor, Junior Professor... bis hin zum/zur Professor*in! Studienbrücke – in Deutschland studieren!

Viele Schülerinnen und Schüler machen sich Gedanken über ihre Zukunft. Wie wäre es mit einem Studium in Deutschland? Deutschland gehört zu den beliebtesten Studienstandorten für internationale Studierende. Kein Wunder: in Deutschland ist das Studium kostenfrei und auf allerhöchstem Niveau. Die Studienbrücke am Goethe-Institut bietet einen Weg zum Erwerb eines Hochschulzugangs während der Schule in Deutschland. Schülerinnen und Schüler nehmen Online-Sprachkurse, Sommerkursen in Deutschland und Prüfungsvorbereitungskursen teil und können sich direkt nach ihrem Abschluss an ausgewählten Partneruniversitäten bewerben.

NEU AUF DEM LÄNDRPORTAL USA: TRAININGSVIDEOS POETRY SLAM Slam Poetry ist eine wunderbare Art, die Schönheit einer Sprache zu entdecken. Im Fremdsprachenunterricht ermöglicht Slam Poetry die Arbeit mit verschiedenen Fertigkeiten, wie Hören, kreatives Schreiben und performatives Sprechen.

Wie integriert man Poetry Slam in den Deutschunterricht? Wie gelangt man von einer ersten Idee zum Text und letztendlich zur Performance?

In drei Trainingsvideos führt der Berliner Slam Poet Böttcher uns Schritt für Schritt durch den Entstehungsprozess von Slam Poetry und illustriert diesen mit anschaulichen Beispielen und praktischen Übungen.

Im ersten Video geht es um den Inhalt und die Frage, wie wir über Worte, Klänge, Bilder und Assoziationen zu Ideen als Grundlage für unsere Slam Poetry kommen. Das zweite Video befasst sich mit dem Text und bietet Einblicke in verschiedene Methoden des Textschreibens. Im dritten Video steht die Show zentral und bekommen wir Tipps und Tricks für die perfekte ''performance''.

Die Trainingsvideos können für Deutschlernende verschiedener Niveaustufen im Präsenz- und im Online-Unterricht eingesetzt werden.

SAGA trotzt der Covid-19-Krise „Es war eine Herausforderung, den Unterricht in unseren Klassen den Infektionsschutzmaßnahmen anzupassen“, erklärt Anjanette Gonzales, die Schulleiterin der Seattle Area German American Immersionsschule (SAGA).

Seit 2005 gibt es die SAGA als vollwertig anerkannte Vor- und Grundschule, seit ca. fünf Jahren hat sie ihren Standort im Norden Seattles in einer alten Kirche und sie ist mittlerweile zu einer festen Institution geworden – mit der Intention, durch die Integration der deutschen Kultur auch ein übergreifendes kulturelles Verständnis zu etablieren.

„Sprachen lernen kann nur in realen Kontexten erfolgreich stattfinden, das ist die Philosophie, der unsere Schule folgt“, führt die Schulleiterin weiter aus.

Fast 140 Kinder im Alter von Pre-K bis 5th Grade profitieren derzeit von diesem ganzheitlichen und kulturverbindenden Ansatz.

Natürlich hat die Covid-19-Krise für die Schule und die jungen Schüler/-innen einige Veränderungen mit sich gebracht.

„Zur Umsetzung der erforderlichen Maßnahmen gemäß den staatlichen Bestimmungen war es notwendig, viele Bereiche neu zu denken“, erläutert Anita Dunlap, die Leiterin des Vorschulbereichs. „Wir haben „bubbles“ geschaffen, also Gruppen, die sich nicht vermischen. Jede Gruppe hat nicht nur ihren eigenen Raum, sondern auch einen eigenen Eingang, die Kinder haben ihre eigenen Boxen für ihre Rucksäcke, ihre Stifte und Bastelmaterial.

Im Garten der Schule sind Pavillons aufgestellt, sodass der Unterricht so oft wie möglich im Freien stattfinden kann.

Auch die Eltern oder Besucher dürfen die Schule nicht mehr betreten, um die Infektionsgefahr so gering wie möglich zu halten.

Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA)

Wie effektiv und mittlerweile etabliert dieses Konzept ist, zeigt sich unter anderem an der Tatsache, dass der Schulnewsletter zu 80 Prozent über pädagogische Inhalte und Informationen zu anstehenden Veranstaltungen berichtet – und eben nicht mehr über Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung des Virus. „Unsere Maßnahmen werden von allen akzeptiert und befolgt, die Eltern unterstützen uns und selbst die Kinder haben keine Probleme, die neuen Regeln einzuhalten“, erläutert Anjanette Gonzales.

Davon konnte sich auch Isabell Barthel überzeugen, die zurzeit als Teaching Assistant über das MYG-Programm des Pädagogischen Austauschdienstes an der Schule arbeitet. „Ich war total überrascht, als ich verstanden habe, warum die Kids mit ausgebreiteten Armen durch ihren Gruppenraum laufen – das sind ihre „Airplane-Arme“. Die British International School of Houston – eine neue DSD-Schule in Houston, Texas Die BISH ist eine Gesamtschule und bietet Deutsch als Fremd- und Muttersprache seit 2018 bereits ab der Vorschule durchgängig an.

In allen Deutschklassen werden kulturelle Komponenten integriert. Während in der Primarstufe und Mittelstufe Ereignisse wie Ostern, Weihnachten, das Oktoberfest und der Tag der deutschen Einheit zelebriert werden, achtet man in der Sekundarstufe und bei den Diplomabgängern auf karriereorientierte Anlässe; z.B. gab es für interessierte Schüler/-innen am 13. Januar 2021 einen Vortrag der Fachberaterin Susanne Dreyer über Studienmöglichkeiten in Deutschland. Als DSD-Anbieter möchte die Schule ihr Sprachangebot für die IB-Abgänger erweitern. Für diese Schüler erweitert sich mit einem DSD-Diplom die Auswahl an Universitäten immens. Das DSD kann ihnen die Türen zu Schulen, Universitäten und Karrieren öffnen.

In Zeiten von Corona bietet die Schule den Familien die Wahl zwischen virtuellem und Präsenzunterricht.

Die Familien können nach Belieben ihren Lernstatus ändern und die Schüler wechseln leicht zwischen den gegebenen Optionen.

Es wird an der Schule viel Wert auf Gruppenarbeit, Kreativität und Präsentationsfähigkeit gelegt und den Kern des Unterrichts bildet das Erlernen von Fähigkeiten.

Als internationale Schule ist selbstverständlich auch das Fördern des internationalen Denkens ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Unterrichts, berichtet Frau Henecka, die langjährige Leiterin des Deutschprogramms an der BISH.

Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) Die German International School Chicago – eine neue DSD Schule in Chicago Offizielle IB World School, akkreditierte ISACS-Mitgliedsschule, PASCH-Schule und nun auch eine DSD-Schule: Nach dem Erhalt der Prüfungsgenehmigung für das Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz, Stufe I, verfügt der Bundesstaat Illinois nun mit der German International School Chicago (GISC) über die erste Vollzeitschule mit einem DSD -Programm.

Die GISC, die 2007 infolge einer deutsch-österreichisch-amerikanischen Initiative von Eltern und Pädagogen gegründet wurde, ist eine zweisprachige, gemeinnützige Privatschule, an welcher der Großteil des Unterrichts immersiv auf Deutsch erfolgt. In den 13 Jahren ist die Schüler/-innenzahl in den Klassenstufen 1 bis 8 auf 150 gewachsen.

Die Schulleiterin Petra Obritzberger schätzt die Wachstumschancen der Schule als sehr gut ein, bieten doch die im Jahr 2018 erworbenen neuen, großzügigen Räumlichkeiten im beschaulichen Chicagoer Stadtteil Ravenswood optimale Voraussetzungen für das Ziel, über die kommenden Jahre bis zur 12. Klasse zu wachsen. Es ist geplant, künftig einen dreifachen Abschluss anzubieten mit IB Diploma, DSD II und High School Diploma.

Ulf Hennig, der Fachbereichsleiter für Deutsch, und sein Lehrerkollege Fabian Liesner haben im 2019/20 den von der ZfA angebotenen DSD GOLD-Kurs (Globales Online-Lernen DaF) absolviert und dadurch ihre DSD I-Prüferzertifikate erworben. Das DSD-Programm konnten sie bereits im Schuljahr 2020/21 in dem für alle Schüler/-innen offerierten Präsenzunterricht implementieren. Sie freuen sich darauf, ihren 8.-Klässler/-innen bereits in diesem Frühjahr die Sprachdiplomprüfung anbieten zu können. Wir wünschen den Prüfungskandidaten und Kandidatinnen viel Erfolg!

Neues Schulleitungsteam an der German School Upstate bringt frischen Wind – Erste DSD I Online Urkundenverleihung mit dem deutschen Generalkonsulat Atlanta Seit knapp einem Jahr wird die German School Upstate in South Carolina von einem sehr engagierten neuen jungen Team geleitet. Die DSS Upstate ist die einzige DSD Schule in South Carolina und eine wachsende Samstagsschule an zwei Standorten, Spartanburg und Greenville. Das neue Schulleitungsteam ist sehr professionell aufgestellt und kann auf umfangreiche Erfahrungen hinsichtlich der Durchführung eines anspruchsvollen Deutschunterrichts zurückgreifen. An dieser Schule lernen Schüler vom Kindergarten bis zur High School Deutsch und es werden neben den DSD Prüfungen auch andere landesweite 24

Neues von der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) Deutsch Examen angeboten, bei denen die Schüler der German School Upstate immer zu den Preisträgern gehören.

Die gute Qualität des Deutschunterrichts stellt somit auch die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an den DSD I und DSD II Prüfungen sicher, welche den Zugang zum Studienkolleg oder zur Hochschule in Deutschland über das „Studienticket DSD“ ermöglichen.

Am 16.01.2021 fand daher die erste online DSD I Urkunden Verleihung statt, die bei allen Beteiligten auf große Begeisterung stieß. Den glücklichen DSD I Absolventen wurden ihre DSD I Urkunden durch die stellvertretende Generalkonsulin und Kulturbeauftragte des Generalkonsulats Atlanta, Kirsten Steltzer, sowie durch die Fachberaterin für Deutsch der ZfA und dem Schulleiter der German School Upstate verliehen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an die DSD I Absolventen und weiter so!

Jugend Debattiert jetzt auch in den USA Jugend debattiert ist ein Wettbewerb, den es seit 2002 in Deutschland, seit 2006 international gibt und 2019 zum ersten Mal in Kalifornien stattgefunden hat. Für 2020 war ein Wettbewerb auf nationaler Ebene geplant, der aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie nicht stattfinden konnte.

Üblicherweise bilden die Fachberatungen Lehrkräfte zu Jugend-debattiert-Lehrer/-innen aus, die dann die Inhalte und Übungen an die Schüler/-innen weitergeben. In Klassen-, Schul- und Regionalwettbewerben werden die überzeugendsten Debattanten ermittelt, und im Nationalfinale schließlich der Sieger oder die Siegerin.

Natürlich kann dies im zweiten Jahr der Pandemie nicht so organisiert werden, aber trotzdem laufen die Planungen für die Post-Pandemie schon jetzt.

Zunächst sollen Schüler/-innen der DSD-Schulen in einem OnlineWorkshop in zehn Sitzungen das Werkzeug für eine erfolgreiche Debatte bekommen. Zum Schuljahresende wird es einen OnlineWettbewerb geben. Geplant ist, die talentiertesten Schüler/innen zum Nordamerika- Finale im Oktober nach Kalifornien einzuladen. Wer sich dort die meisten Punkte erstreitet, gewinnt eine Reise zum Bundesfinale 2022 nach Berlin.

Und was machen ihre Lehrerinnen und Lehrer? Parallel zum Schülertraining nehmen sie beobachtend und reflektierend teil. Die Lehrkräfte der erfolgreichsten Schüler/-innen werden ebenfalls nach Kalifornien eingeladen und bekommen dort einen Workshop, um die Übungen zu vertiefen. Und sie dürfen natürlich ihre Schützlinge anfeuern.
