A Word from the President Liebe AATG-Mitglieder, der langersehnte Sommer ist endlich angekommen! Es gibt keine Unterrichtspläne und Lehrerkonferenzen mehr. Die lieben Kollegen im Klassenraum nebenan sind auf einmal weg, man kann den Frühstückstisch zuhause wieder draußen decken und im Sonnenschein genießen. Der Kaffee schmeckt sogar ganz anders… Mit anderen Worten, Ruhe und Entspannung sind wieder in unser Leben eingekehrt. Diese Ruhe, die wir in den letzten Monaten nie hatten, wirkt aber auch etwas befremdlich, denn man musste das ganze Schuljahr hindurch ständig „Wichtiges“ unbedingt und termingerecht erledigen, während alle anderen Aufgaben und Pflichten möglichst nicht zu kurz kommen durften. Wir Deutschlehrer tendieren nämlich dazu, Perfektionisten zu sein. Und hier renne ich bei Ihnen sicherlich offene Türen ein!

Aber jetzt ist all dies vorbei. In den ersten freien Sommertagen scheint alles traumhaft schön zu sein.

Da herrscht sogar ein Gefühl der Befreiung! Es gilt letztendlich keinen Zeitplan einzuhalten, und niemand fordert uns auf, unseren beruflichen Pflichten nachzukommen. Aber nach und nach kommt in uns das Gefühl auf etwas schaffen zu müssen. Man möchte doch endlich den im letzten Sommer angefangenen Roman zu Ende lesen oder den Garten unbedingt auf Vordermann bringen. Vielleicht soll das Arbeitszimmer ausgemistet und auch das Kinderzimmer neu gestrichen werden. Man will auf keinen Fall den ganzen Sommer ohne Ziel und Zweck herumlungern und Zeit verschwenden. Diese To -Do-Listen sind uns allen bekannt und bestehen selbstverständlich aus den verschiedensten Aufgaben, die uns zwar voneinander unterscheiden und doch verbinden.

Aber das muss in den Sommerferien nicht so sein, denn es gibt auch ruhige Momente, die uns plötzlich zum Nachdenken auffordern. Da sind Freunde, Eltern und Geschwister anzurufen, oder lange Gespräche mit Familienmitgliedern zu führen. Wir können neue Backrezepte ausprobieren und Nachbarn zum Kaffee einladen oder eventuell auch allein im Gartenstuhl sitzen, Vögeln nachsehen und ihren Flug bewundern. Das Leben hat auch eine wundervolle, prächtige Seite, und jetzt haben wir die Zeit, diese auf unsere eigene Weise auszukosten.

Diesen Sommer fliege ich—wie üblich—in meine zweite Heimat nach Soest, wo ich schon seit über 20 Jahren meine Art von Paradies gefunden habe. Da komme ich immer zur Ruhe und fühle mich richtig gut aufgehoben. Dann besuche ich auch meine jüngere Tochter, die sich zur Zeit in Göttingen aufhält. Da werde ich als wohlwollender Papa ihr neues Leben begutachten und mit ihr erleben. Ich freue mich schon auf unsere gemeinsame Zeit, denn sie ist auch eine richtige „Kaffeetante“ geworden. Wir wissen inzwischen die gemütlichen Cafés und die Kneipenszene in Deutschland gemeinsam richtig zu genießen. Sicherlich werde ich auch meine Backkünste nach langen Fahrradtouren ins Blaue neu aktivieren und mit sehr guten Freunden teilen. Dies alles wünsche ich mir im Sommer und noch viel mehr! Ich habe mittlerweile das unbehagliche Gefühl, dass die Tage der letzten drei Jahreszeiten an mir vorbeigerast sind, ohne dass ich sie richtig wahrgenommen habe.

Geht es Ihnen auch so, dass Ihnen jedes Jahr kürzer als das vorangegangene Jahr vorkommt?

Von Herzen wünsche ich Ihnen, dass Sie sich diesen Sommer die Zeit nehmen, etwas für sich zu tun, etwas, was richtig Spaß macht und Ihnen innere Ruhe schenkt. Das haben zweifelsohne alle, die im Lehrerberuf tätig sind, verdient. Die Zeit schreitet voran, der Herbst und damit das neue Schuljahr warten mit neuen Aufgaben auf uns. Und diese Aufgaben können wir nur mit Bravour meistern, wenn wir in den Ferien gut „aufgetankt“ haben.

AATG celebrates Staff AATG staff members Barbara Hartman and Pamela Edler retire AATG recently honored the service of staff members Barbara Hartman and Pamela Edler upon their retirement from the organization.

Barbara Hartman, AATG Shipping Coordinator, retired in May after 17 years of dedicated service to AATG. A native of Southern New Jersey, Barbara started her work at AATG in April 1999, after working in various positions in banking and data support. At AATG, Barbara was responsible for maintaining the online AATG Store and fulfilling merchandise orders. She carefully packed and shipped each and every item that went out the door. In addition to processing and shipping orders, Barbara also assisted with numerous bookkeeping tasks.

Barbara plans to spend her retirement enjoying time with her husband and children, and rooting for her three grandsons at their sporting events. She also hopes to catch up on craft projects.

AATG also bids farewell to Program Associate Pamela Edler following her seven years of service. Since she began working at AATG in 2009, Pamela’s key responsibility has been the support of the Delta Epsilon Phi National Honor Society for High School Students, Delta Epsilon Phi Junior National Honor Society for Middle School and Junior High Students, and Epsilon Phi Delta, National Honor Society for Community College Students. Pamela generated thousands of membership certificates, and packed and shipped membership pins, honor cords, graduation tassels, and other honor society memorabilia.

Pamela’s retirement plans include spending time with family, keeping up with her Stammtisch group, and travelling frequently to visit friends and family in Nürnberg, her home town.

Barbara and Pamela have been key in providing AATG members with highquality service. These two dedicated employees will be greatly missed by the AATG staff and membership. AATG Executive Director, Keith Cothrun said, “Barbara and Pamela have contributed significantly to AATG during their many years of service. We wish them both the best—but really wish they weren’t leaving. Their meticulous work—and deep commitment to AATG’s members— is simply remarkable.”

Deutsch macht Spaß Grant funds available Ever dream of launching an exciting project to support your German program? Need some Kohle to get that started? The AATG has grant funds from the German government’s Netzwerk Deutsch program to support local campus or community events to promote German learning and engagement with German culture. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded to support creative and innovative projects. Projects must be completed by December 15, 2016.

Eligible applicants are teachers at Saturday schools, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and post-secondary institutions, or teams of teachers from multiple institutions.

Applications should include: 

goals for the project;  activities to be undertaken during the project period;  rationale that the project will help promote visibility of German programs and support the recruitment of new students;  implementation plan;  supporting letter from principal, departmental chair, or other administrator;  other supporting documentation that applicants deem appropriate;  a detailed project budget.

Submit your proposal as a pdf file via email to info@aatg.org. Project proposals will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. The final deadline for submission is August 15, 2016.

2016 National German Exam Over 5,100 students participate in Level 1 Exam 5,130 Level 1 students took the 2016 National German Exam. The number of students participating in Level 1 increased by 23% over last year. Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, and Alabama ranked highest in number of student participants.

Results 558 students scored in the 90th percentile or higher on the exam and were honored with Gold Medals. 511 Silver Medals were awarded to students scoring in the 80th to 89th percentile and 409 students earned Bronze Medals by scoring in the 70th to 79th percentile on the National German Exam. All National German Exam Gold, Silver, and Bronze

Award Winners are also honored online in the Presidential Honor Roll with a special commendation from AATG President Hal Boland.

Mean scores The mean score of students in the Standard Group was 68.4. The Standard Group was comprised of 4,987 students who responded “no” to the survey question, “Is German spoken regularly in your home?” If the students’ knowledge of German comes only from German classes taught in US schools, they are instructed to answer no. 143 students who answered yes to the survey question comprise the Non-Standard Group. The mean score of the Non-Standard Group was 77.4.

Exam format The Level 1 Exam is tailored to the knowledge and skills of a beginning German student. Specially designed to allow German I students to show what they know, the exam is divided into two sections: Section I assesses listening and viewing and consists of 50 questions, Section II assesses reading and consists of 50 questions. Students have 40 minutes to complete each section. The content of the exam focuses on family, friends, school, and hobbies.

Chapters honor student excellence Many AATG chapters hold award presentations to honor students for their achievements on the National German Exam. It’s a great way to garner community recognition of outstanding German students, great teachers, and strong programs.

Maryland / DC Metro The Maryland/DC Metro chapter held its 21st annual awards ceremony to recognize achievement on the 2016 National German Exam on Sunday, May 22, 2016. A crowd of 200 filled the Adlersaal of Baltimore’s Zionkirche, a historic church founded by German immigrants, to watch the 68 gold and silver medal winners receive their medals, certificates, and cash awards, which were generously donated by the German Society of Maryland.

Chapter president Amanda Sheffer of the Catholic University of America opened the program by introducing AATG President Hal Boland, who informed winners, family members, and friends of the history and growth of the National German Exam. Anton Smoot, president of the German Society of Maryland, then challenged the audience to engage with the history of immigration in Baltimore at the society’s brand-new Immigrant House Museum, which focuses on 19th and 20th century immigration to Baltimore. Andreas Gebert of the German Embassy spoke of the importance of German, the second-most widely spoken language in the EU, and the future benefits of language ability in the global economy.

Anton Smoot and Maureen Helinski presented awards to college students who are majoring and minoring in German in Maryland.

The Society concluded its section of the program by presenting Sarah Ross, Fallston H.S., with the Gerhard Meinzer Award to support summer study in Germany. 2015 Meinzer Award winner and the winner of the AATG/PAD Summer Study Trip described their trips to Germany. The students emphasized that studying in Germany allowed them more academic freedom and offered the chance to make new friends for life. The program concluded with Matthew Woorman, Maryland Lyric Opera, singing Wagner—and reminding the audience of the importance of German for music students.

Smoot presented the students with their NGE awards, including cash awards from the German Society of Maryland. Each student received an AATG medal, a certificate with their name, and a gift bag with items donated by the German Information Center and the Goethe-Institut Washington. A reception with German pastries followed.

German Society of Maryland support of student achievement was the brainchild of former chapter and national AATG president Mohammed Esa, McDaniel College, who reached out to the German Society of Maryland. The partnership has bonded both organizations, who work together throughout the year to further the study of German and cultivate interest in German-Americana.

The students were excited not only to receive their goodie bags, but to hear the presentations by the trip award winners. Even our vocal performer encouraged students to consider how they could use German in their future careers. Mr. Gebert mentioned the bonus that it can add to your paycheck. Students felt honored by their achievement and the parents also saw the importance that German can bring to their child’s future studies.

National German Exam awards presentations Massachusetts Students who score above the 90th percentile and their teachers are invited to the Massachusetts AATG Chapter National German Exam Awards, and each student can bring up to two guests. In addition to families and teachers, the Consul General from the German Consulate in Boston is an invited guest. The chapter publicizes the event on its website and also encourages students to provide information about the awards ceremony to their local papers.

The awards ceremony is hosted by the Goethe-Institut Boston. After words of welcome, the chapter testing chair, Peter Weise, introduced the study trip winners and past study trip winners reported in German about their experiences in Germany. Students are recognized individually with a certificate, a gold medal, and either a book, CD, or DVD. At the conclusion, guests are invited to Kaffee und Kuchen which has been set up in the back room.

Sponsorship from local businesses such as Trader Joe's, Wegmans, and a local Swiss baker helps subsidize the Kaffee und Kuchen. The Goethe-Institut provides the facility and some book prizes.

There is a $7.50 fee per guest to defray reception costs. This year, the chapter also gave book prizes to the teachers whose students scored above the 90th percentile, as a gesture of appreciation. At this ceremony, the chapter also presents its Klett-Langenscheidt award to a teacher for increased participation in the NGE. The award presentation has a wonderful influence on students and their enthusiasm to learn German. Honored students show up at school on Monday VERY pumped about the experience and their prizes from the awards ceremony. The speeches of the past study trip award winners have a profound effect, and are quite inspiring. The students are mesmerized as they listen to them speak, and you can see the wheels turning in their heads as they think, “I want to be standing up there speaking German that well next year.”

Northern Illinois The annual awards ceremony for students was hosted by Northwestern University on May 1. The chapter invited 203 students who scored at or above the 90th percentile on the NGE and four post-secondary students who were nominated for the Northern Illinois AATG Collegiate Award of Excellence by their institutions.

About 300 people attended the ceremony, including about 120 NGE awardees and three collegiate awardees. Chapter president Ninja Nagel welcomed the guests, recognized teachers and parents for their support, and spoke of the importance of studying German. Two students who received Study Trip Awards last year spoke about their experiences in Germany.

Each student received a bag with the motto “AATG National German Students from Oak Park and River Forest High School Exam—Ich war dabei!” filled with gifts ranging from books to calendars, sporting their NGE medals and “Ich war dabei” awards bags, iTunes gift cards, jackets, travel mugs, and other special surprises, which with teacher Liliana Boyce. had been donated or purchased—and the gold medals. The collegiate awardees received Tragetaschen from Munich, donated jackets and travel mugs, books from AATG, and gift certificates from local restaurants. Two colleagues were also recognized during the event, Johanna Jurgens of Hinsdale Central High School with the KlettLangenscheidt Award and Katharina Barbe of Northern Illinois University with the Northern Illinois AATG Outstanding Educator Award. The two teachers also received books and gift certificates.

Student achievement honored The ceremony was followed by a reception with punch, lemonade, and cookies. The event had great support from local businesses including restaurants, Aldi USA, headquartered in the area, Chicago Importing Company, International Fashions by Ingrid, and the Illinois Turner Camp, along with continued support from the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago in the form of a scholarship for one student to attend Concordia Language Villages. Congratulations to all the fantastic and talented student award winners, their fabulous and hard-working teachers, the amazing faculty award winners, the excellent and dedicated testing and awards chairs Kathy Betterman and Marianne Zemil, and the wonderful team that helped conduct interviews and organize the awards ceremony!

Philadelphia Vicinity and Delaware The chapter awards presentation takes place every year at the Cannstatter Volksfest in Northeast Philadelphia. All students from the region who scored at the 85th percentile or higher on the National German Exam are invited, along with their teachers. This year, more than 30 schools were represented, and over 100 students were recognized for their achievements! The chapter received generous donations totaling over $3,000 from 12 different sponsors, including local Austrian and German organizations. Light refreshments and snacks were served at the end of the ceremony.

Minnesota The 2016 Minnesota AATG Award banquet was held on May 22 in the University of St. Thomas’ Anderson Student Center, Woulfe Hall, with 130 guests gathered to honor achievements of both students and teachers.

All students who scored above the 70th percentile of the National German Exam were invited to attend with their families and teachers. Andrew Staab, former Dean of Waldsee at the Concordia Language Villages, delivered an inspiring keynote address, and Cody Hou, last year’s AATG/PAD Study Trip Award Winner, spoke about his experiences.

During the luncheon, high school students from throughout Minnesota were recognized for their high achievement in learning German. In addition, the AATGMN chapter honored Matt Beck, 2016 AATG Minnesota Teacher of the Year. This year for the first time, the chapter invited all three nominees and announced the winner during the banquet—like the “Oscars.”

Wonderful sponsors enable the Minnestoa chapter to hold the awards presentation banquet. Donations come from non-profit organizations, local colleges and Minnesota students celebrating their achievements in German. universities, and private donors who want to promote German in Minnesota. Their generous support helps cover the cost of awards for the students as well as the luncheon for the students, teachers, and sponsors, and to keep the ticket costs as low as possible for family members attending. Everyone involved enjoys the event, and the last few years have been particularly festive! Chapter testing chair Ginny Steinhagen followed up on the event by sending messages to school principals commending student and teacher achievement.

AATG chapters through the years The heart of AATG is—and always was—the local chapter. AATG’s first chapter was founded in December 1926 in Metropolitan New York. The following year, chapters were established in the Hudson Valley, Central and Western New York. Extensive growth in chapters was evident in the 1960s.

Through the years, chapter boundaries have changed—most notably in Texas. The Texas chapter was founded in 1956, followed by the El Paso chapter in 1964 and Houston in 1968. In 1988 the Texas chapter split into North Texas and South Texas chapters. A year later, El Paso was merged with New Mexico. West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania were established as separate chapters, in 1957 and 1961 respectively—they merged in 2011. The Washington DC chapter merged with Maryland in 1998 to form the Maryland/Metro DC chapter. The International chapter was founded in 1988 and dissolved in 2013. There are now 59 chapters serving members across the US.

First women in AATG Leadership Margaret McKenzie, Vassar College, was the first woman elected to serve as president of AATG in 1972–73. Born in Great Falls, Montana, she moved to Beverly Hills with her family in 1925. She graduated from Scripps College in 1940, where she later served on the Board of Directors. She earned a masters degree in German Language at Harvard University and a PhD from the University of Chicago.

She served as chair of the German Department at Vassar College, and was a member of the Executive Council of the Modern Language Association. In 1972, while she was AATG president, she gave the commencement address at Scripps College. One of her initiatives as AATG president was launching a task force to develop competency-based teacher training programs, and inviting AATG and AATSP to join the effort.

After her retirement, Margaret McKenzie became co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Beyond Shelter, a Los Angeles nonprofit organization that provides housing and life-skills training to lowincome men and women with children. She died in Beverly Hills in 2009 at the age of 91.

AATG Honorary Member Ruth Klüger was the first female editor of The German Quarterly from 1978–83. Klüger, University of California-Irvine, is author of the bestseller weiter leben. Eine Jugend, about her childhood experiences as a Holocaust survivor during the Third Reich. In January 2016 she addressed the Deutsche Bundestag in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Ruth Klüger has received many awards, including the Goethe-Medaille.

Renate A. Schulz, University of Arizona, was the first woman to edit Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, from 1980–85. She served as AATG President 1990–91 and was also president of the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers' Associations. Renate Schulz served in the Peace Corps and is author of Life in Alien Territory: Memories of Peace Corps Service in Mali. She has also been recognized as an AATG Honorary Member.

In the early years, AATG leadership positions included the president, and first, second, and third vice presidents. Thelma Bryant of Thomas Jefferson High School, VA, was the first woman elected as first vice president, in 1938. As noted below, Katherine Kümmerle served as a vice president from 1927 through 1931, and many other women were elected to serve as vice presidents.

Exploring Internet resources In this column, Doug Philipp of Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, introduces Internet resources that are school-safe and can be used in various ways in German classrooms. Please send Doug your ideas for future columns.

This month, we’ll focus on music and pictures. Most US schools will be on summer break by the time you read this column, so I want to draw your attention to websites that invite summer perusal and planning for the coming school year.

deutschmusikblog.de This website, by Freya Conesa of the Goethe-Institut, is a real treasure chest of materials, which frequently reveals new gems suitable for classroom use. Freya Conesa started Deutschmusikblog in 2011 and has added to it ever since. One of her main objectives is to sift through the vast catalog of modern German songs and sort out ones that can be used well in language classrooms. I realize that boundaries for suitable materials are different in each school district, so please be sure to preview any source before you use it in class.

All of the materials can be accessed by using the drop-down buttons in the website’s upper toolbar, or through the Kategorien toolbar on the right side of the page. Let’s click on the Niveau A1 button where there are over 35 different videos listed, many of which have class-ready materials included. If you go back in the listings to page 3 for A1, you will find materials posted on 27 Februar 2015 for “Wie schön, dass du geboren bist” with a version from the group Deine Freunde.

I could not get the posted link to work, so I did a simple Google search and quickly found the song. When I tried clicking on the links about an E-Card, I needed to search further due to dead links, and this website solved the issue.

I wanted to provide you with alternate links so you can easily incorporate this song and activities into your beginning German classes. Deutschmusikblog often has alternative video links listed, due to all the various country restrictions.

In Niveau A2 there are more than 30 videos listed. In this level Freya Conesa has gathered and created more items that deal with language learning facets, such as working with comparisons.

The video of “Dein Glück” by the band Jeden Tag Silvester demonstrates some ideas to work with.

Moving down in the Kategorien toolbar, let’s click on Landeskunde. There are approximately 50 videos with materials in this section of the website. In a unit about modern Germany, my German 4 students enjoyed working with the listing about Helden from 11 März 2016.

We read numerous classic fairy tales earlier this semester in German 4, so the class was able to compare and contrast the modern Helden images very well with those of the classic tales. They wrote letters to future generations from the viewpoint of classical heroes, describing what was necessary to be a hero. Then the class wrote emails about people of today, describing what makes a modern hero.

I hope that this introduction and quick tour of Deutschmusikblog has piqued your interest to explore it further. The website truly is a resource filled with many usable and easily adaptable materials that can match up very well with leading themes in our language classrooms.

Using music and photos in the classroom photopeach.com Summertime is when I try to get my photos more organized so that I can use them easily and successfully in my classes. Let’s look at one possibility to create online picture shows. There are many sources to create slide shows, and the one I am profiling this month is called Photo Peach.

If you have some spare funds, upgrading to the educator account status allows lots more options, however, the free option could be used by an entire class with each person able to have a separate account on Photo Peach. This website makes sharing slide programs across various media quite simple.

To demonstrate how to use Photo Peach, I am going to create a slideshow with some of my photos from Weimar. Click on the Upload Photos to start loading.

You can use the control/shift keys to upload multiple photos at once.

After all the photos are uploaded, you can easily move the slides around to achieve the order you want. Then you can select music if you wish and simply save the show on the website.

If you want to create captions and quiz questions, you will need to click on the Edit icon right above the slide show box, and the following toolbox will appear.

Clicking on the button to Edit Caption & Photos will open another page where there are many options to enhance the slide show. I simply added a quiz question to the first slide.

Because I want to first show my students photos from Weimar, I later deleted the question and saved the new version of the show.

Once the show is complete, you can share it for free on various social media pages. To fully download the show, you must purchase a membership. You can always view the show for free on the Photo Peach website. It will stay there until you delete your work.

In the next newsletter, I will highlight various podcasts and sources for them. My students like listening to podcasts, because they gain greater knowledge of current German trends and become more versed in culture. I will be describing some of our preferred podcasts, but I know there are many out there.

Each year in the spring, middle and high school German students have a chance to challenge their German language abilities and experience German culture by participating in the BYU German Fair. The Brigham Young University (BYU) German Language Fair held in Provo, Utah was a huge success! This year over 650 German students from 27 middle and high schools all over the area attended. Individual students and small groups were able to compete in numerous categories including poetry reading, skits, visual arts, solo vocal music performance, choral performance, conversational German via interview, video, choir, and even soccer and baked goods! Judges from the university gave out rankings and ribbons for the highest achievements.

The baking competition is a new addition this year. It not only gave students an opportunity to try their hand at baking authentic recipes, but it also helped students learn about the differences between baking German and American treats. Bakery favorites such as Pflaumenkuchen, Apfelkuchen, Schaumtorte, Nussecken, and Käsekuchen were all properly represented. One judge commented that the Nussecken he tasted was just like what he buys at a favorite bakery in Germany!

The other categories had outstanding performances from the students as well, and many of the judges were quite impressed at both the level of fluency they demonstrated and the excitement for the language and culture that exuded from all present. The larger and more immersive part of the Fair – Kleindeutschland – had booths with games, food, souvenirs, and all kinds of activities related to German language and culture for students to try. The whole area was marked “German only” so when students greeted booth members or had to ask questions, all of their responses had to be in German. Instructions for activities were also given strictly auf Deutsch, and although it was difficult for some, many students commented about how cool it was that they were able to understand. However, if anyone happened to be caught speaking English, he or she was taken by the police, thrown in “jail,” and asked to sing a German song or perform a Zungenbrecher to be released.

Students received a passport to go through Kleindeutschland. At each booth they could complete tasks to get a stamp for their passport. With a certain number of stamps, they could then be entered into a drawing for chocolate and other German goodies.

The activities ranged from a German Landmark Schnitzeljagd to a photo booth with cut-outs of famous Germans and Austrians like Martin Students enjoying visiting the „Bier“garten and candy store 16

Luther, Angela Merkel, Bach, and Marie Antoinette. Other booths included a “Bier”garten with Apfelschorle instead of beer, a candy store with Haribo, Milka, and Kinder products, and souvenir booths with t-shirts, hats, and little bears dressed in Lederhosen.

In addition to the booths the University provided, individual schools and teachers also contributed. One sold authentic (and delicious) Berliner, one hosted a Germany-geography based game, and one even taught students how to measure a Hogwarts robe and wand in German!

The soccer tournament is another well-loved competition at the Fair. A Volkswagen dealership even sponsors one of the schools for its involvement in the tournament, as can been seen on the player’s t-shirts.

Overall the Fair is great opportunity to get students involved in the greater language learning community and help them see the broader perspective of where learning German can take them. The event is an amazing coming-together out of love for the German language and culture and the beauty of being united. The BYU German Fair and events like it promote exactly what AATG strives for: promoting high quality language learning experiences, providing increased access and opportunities to learn German for students from all backgrounds, and creating a solid relation with the public.

BYU German Fair 2017 is already highly anticipated! The event has an incredible potential for growth and outreach in the community and has the schools and university very excited.

AATG Professional Partner vobot – New vocabulary training app with sentence-based exercises Student motivation is key to making progress in German. At L-Pub, we believe there are three main factors that drive motivation: relevance; context; and feedback. These are also the differentiators that make our new vocabulary trainer app “vobot German” unique: students learn words that are relevant to them, practice them in authentic phrases, and always get immediate feedback whether their answers are right or wrong. vobot = “vocabulary robot”

No question, using technology itself is a great motivator, but if it is only for technology’s sake, attention soon wanes and little has been gained. So what makes vobot different?

How vobot works – the basics The default start screen in vobot is the empty search field. Students can choose to look up a word in German or English. The beauty of vobot is that students create their own customized learning lists. No one likes to study words they already know or are not ready for yet, so vobot is designed to let the student learn what they want— Looking up a what is relevant to them at that moment. Let’s say a student is reading a text about a farm and sees the word word in German “Pferd”. So they type P-f-e-r-d into the search field. All of the words that begin with those letters will be shown, the shortest one first. Even if a student types in the flexion of a verb, e.g. “wusste”, they will be directed to the base form “wissen”. The advantage is they will be able to find the meaning without necessarily having known the base form. The same applies to nouns: “Ärzte” leads to “Arzt”, etc.

When the student selects a word, a new screen appears with a definition and sample sentence (or typical phrase). Most words in vobot have several sample sentences. The student can swipe through them with their finger or use the arrows to see different sentences.

Some words have different definitions. These can be swiped through until the student finds the appropriate meaning. In the case of “Pferd” another meaning is “on horseback” in the sense of “Wir haben die Landschaft zu Pferd erkundet.” Sample sentences are very useful, since the real meaning can often only really be understood in context. When a student finds a sentence they would like to practice with, they can touch the button below their selection to add it to their learning list.

Choosing a phrase to practice with

The first exercise with a word is multiple choice

At any time, students can switch from SEARCH to LEARN mode, by using the icons on the lower navigation. The first screen in the LEARN mode is their current learning list, where they can scroll through all of the words they are currently learning and see how well they have been doing: the green boxes next to a word show how often they have successfully practiced that word. Words with only yellow boxes have just been added or have not been practiced yet. Students can opt to see only these words by pressing the SHOW NEW button. If they want to refresh their memory about any word, they can click it and go to the full definition with the sample sentence.

Reviewing the list of collected words

To start practicing, students press TEST ALL. The set of exercises in vobot starts with multiple choice, to slowly familiarize the student with the word and its meaning, and culminates in them having to correctly spell the entire word in German. This set of 5 exercises must be completed correctly before a word is considered learned.

Since most verbs and adjectives (and some nouns) are written differently depending on their context, exercise 3 draws the student’s attention to this, preparing them for the spelling exercises which can be tricky. To keep students on their toes, the sequence of the exercises is completely random. That’s why it’s better if the student has at least twenty in their list. If a word has not yet been practiced successfully, they will not be confronted with a more difficult exercise for that word. To earn the fifth green box, a student must completely spell the word. After that, the word will move to the student’s mastered list, which can be found in the settings menu (arrows to the upper right). If at any time a student makes a mistake, the correct answer will be shown in red.

AATG Professional Partner Since red is known to attract people’s attention the most, we have chosen never to show mistakes in red. We showed corrected mistakes in red, so the student is more likely to take note of the correct answer. Green is used for positive feedback and grey is used for inactive buttons or to show mistakes.

To sum it up, what’s important is that the student is learning a word that is relevant to them; is in a meaningful and authentic context; and gives them immediate feedback whether they are right or wrong. To get a better idea of how vobot works, please watch the tutorial video found here.

Using vobot in the classroom There are lots of creative ways you can use vobot in the classroom. Here is one example we call “StoryCorner”.

Have your students form groups of five. Give each student one word and also the meaning you would like them to learn, for example, Word 1: der Zug (noun) = a move, usually a figure in a game such as chess; Word 2: doch (particle) = filler word expressing irritation or anger. Ask each participant to choose one sample sentence from vobot for their word. Then the students share their sentences with each other and have to collaborate on a short story using those 5 sentences. They can add their own sentences to bridge the gaps and create a more or less congruent story. In this example, the sentences from vobot are underlined:

The students not only learn the words you assigned them, but will also be exposed to the other words in the sentences, as well as grammar, sentence structure and common collations. By creating a story, your students also become productive, a great way to practice their German skills in an engaging way.

Outside of the classroom, vobot is an ideal way for students to practice their interpretive skills.

Since no one is observing them, vobot provides a safe place to practice. But they still get friendly and useful feedback! You can find more suggestions for how to use vobot in or outside of the classroom on our website.

By autumn 2016, L-Pub will be releasing a version of the vobot app that students can download for free and practice about 20 commonly used German words. If they want full access to the Hueber dictionary, they can opt to purchase the whole dictionary in one go or sign up for a monthly subscription. In these cases, however, the Volume Purchase Program cannot be used.

The German Quarterly Graduate Student Paper Award The AATG announces its award for the best research paper by a graduate student on any topic related to German Studies. Any student enrolled in an M.A. or Ph.D. program at the time of submission is eligible to submit a previously unpublished paper, either in English or German. The winning essay is published in The German Quarterly.

The paper should be submitted to Carl Niekerk niekerk@illinois.edu, editor of The German Quarterly. Students should include a cover sheet with their name, institutional affiliation, contact information, title of the paper, and word count.

A faculty endorsement of the essay must also be submitted. The deadline for submissions is July 1.

Internships at German Parliament Know a young person who speaks German and is interested in politics? Encourage them to consider the International Parliamentary Scholarship program, aimed at highly qualified young men and women who are interested in politics.

The German Bundestag, the German Parliament, offers young people the opportunity to get to know the German parliamentary system and political decision-making processes and to gain practical experience of parliamentary work during a 13-week work placement with a member of the Bundestag.

The program begins March 1, 2017 and ends July 31, 2017.

Winners are chosen by the German Bundestag’s independent selection panel. Selection interviews are held in the United States.

Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler der Jahrgangsstufe 6 der Millard Public Schools belegen jeweils zwölf Wochen Spanisch, Französisch und Deutsch.

Am Ende des Schuljahres treffen sie eine Wahl über ihre Zweitsprache an der Middle School. Sehr viele Schülerinnen und Schüler der Russell Middle School entscheiden sich für Deutsch.

Was fasziniert dich daran, Deutsch zu unterrichten?

Eigentlich war ich ursprünglich davon fasziniert, Deutsch zu lernen. Die Freude und das Interesse an Sprache, Kultur und Geschichte der deutschsprachigen Länder will ich mit meinen Schülerinnen und Schülern teilen und auch in ihnen wecken.

Nörgeln in Alaska ZfA-Fortbildung in Anchorage Im Frühjahr war es wieder soweit: In den Räumlichkeiten des Anchorage School District fand auf Einladung von BDU Natascha Milde ein Seminartag für Lehrkräfte aus Alaska statt.

Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung, zu der sich Lehrerinnen und Lehrer aus Immersionsschulen, Grundschulen, Mittelschulen und High Schools einfanden, standen Informationen zu aktuellen Entwicklungen im DaFUnterricht, eine Präsentation über „Studieren in Deutschland“ sowie kommende Projekte zum Thema STEM.

Auf welche Weise gelingt meaningful learning in deinem Deutschprogramm?

So viel wie möglich unterstütze und fördere ich Kontakte mit deutschen Muttersprachlern. Vielleicht das beste Beispiel ist ein jährlicher SkypeAnruf bei meiner Freundin, die in der ehemaligen DDR aufwuchs. Das machen wir als Höhepunkt einer Einheit über das geteilte Deutschland und die Öffnung der Grenze.

Woran zeigen deine Schülerinnen und Schüler das größte Interesse?

Meine Schülerinnen und Schüler sind sehr neugierig und zeigen das größte Interesse an denjenigen Unterrichtsstunden, die Kultur und Geschichte mit einbeziehen. Viele wollen die Sprache ihrer Herkunft lernen und manche wollen sogar später einmal in Deutschland leben oder studieren.

Was sagt die Schulleiterin, Teresa Perkins, zu deinem Deutschprogramm? „At Russell Middle School, students are drawn to the German program in part due to the depth of the opportunities to learn about the culture and history of the language. Students experience authentic interactions with people who have recently been to Germany, with people who are native speakers and with the customs and traditions surrounding the language.”

Im Workshop zum Thema „Besser (aus)sprechen“ erfuhren die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer anhand von „Höhepunkte beim Essen“ und mit Hilfe des „Nörgel-Bingo“, wie man Aussprache und Intonation der deutschen Sprache auf spielerische und unterhaltsame Art und Weise lehren und lernen kann und nahmen interessante Anregungen mit in die nächsten Schulstunden.

DSD I: Das „Erste Mal“ in Pueblo, CO Die Centennial High School ist die erste Schule im Pueblo County, an der in diesem Frühjahr die Prüfungen zum Deutschen Sprachdiplom der Stufe I (DSD I) durchgeführt wurden. Anlässlich dieser Premiere fand ein Interview mit der Leiterin des Deutschprogramms, Sabine Moosbrugger, statt.

DSD Statewide in Georgia: Erstmals Prüfungen zum DSD I abgelegt

In diesem Jahr fand das DSD I zum ersten Mal an der Centennial High statt. Welche Erfahrungen möchtest du gerne an andere Schulen weitergeben?

Macht es unbedingt! Das DSD ist eine so zentrale und wichtige Erfahrung für die Schülerinnen und Schüler gewesen. Ich habe mich so über die Leistungen meiner Prüflinge gefreut. Viele konnten viel, viel mehr als ich es erwartet hatte. Insgesamt finde ich es wichtig, dass die Lernenden eine Bewertung von außen erhalten. Es geht jetzt nicht mehr nur um meine eigenen Eindrücke und meine Bewertung ihrer Leistungen.

Was haben die Prüflinge über die Prüfungen gesagt?

Meine Schülerinnen und Schüler haben sich wie nach der Besteigung des Pikes Peak gefühlt (ein nahegelegener, über 4300 Meter hoher Berg, der erstmalig 1820 erklommen wurde – Anm. der Interviewerin). Sie sind alle sehr stolz, das DSD absolviert zu haben. Gleich am Tag nach der Prüfung haben wir mit einem deutschen Frühstück ihr Durchhaltevermögen gebührend gefeiert. Interessanterweise empfanden sie selber den Prüfungsteil zum Leseverstehen als die größte Herausforderung.

Welche Auswirkungen wird deiner Einschätzung nach das DSD langfristig auf dein Deutschprogramm haben?

Respekt und Werbung: Das sind die beiden Schlagwörter, die ich spontan als Auswirkung des DSD sehe. Das DSD steigert bereits mittelfristig die Anmeldezahlen an der Centennial High. Da das DSD an meiner Schule zurzeit ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal für die Region ist, steigen die Anmeldezahlen für die Schule und auch für mein Deutschprogramm spürbar. Das DSD passt bestens ebenso zur CTE (Career and Technical Education, DSD I) wie zu den AP Prüfungen (DSD II) - beide Diplomstufen zum CountySchwerpunkt „College Ready“! So gratulierte die für die Schule zuständige Superintendentin, Dr. Constance Jones, allen Prüflingen zur Teilnahme am DSD und zeigte sich auch insgesamt ganz euphorisch!

Dieses Jahr wurde zum ersten Mal auf der Basis eines Memorandum of Understanding zwischen der ZfA, dem Georgia Department of Education und der Kennesaw State University (KSU) das Länderprojekt DSD Statewide in Georgia durchgeführt.

Rund 40 Schülerinnen und Schüler aus vier unterschiedlichen High Schools konnten am 9. März 2016 zum ersten Mal den schriftlichen Teil der DSD I-Prüfung schreiben.

Zehn Tage später kamen die Schülerinnen und Schülern mit ihren Lehrern an die KSU, um den mündlichen Teil der Prüfung abzulegen, der aus einem Gespräch über verschiedene Fragen zum Alltag der Schülerinnen und Schüler und aus einer Präsentation eines selbstgewählten Themas besteht. Dabei hatten sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler Themen ausgesucht, die von Exkursionen nach Deutschland bis zum Lacrossespielen reichten, es wurde sowohl von der eigenen künstlerischen Tätigkeit als auch von der multikulturellen Familie berichtet.

AATG Professional Partner Kunst im DaF-Unterricht: Eine Unterrichtsreihe der Deutschen Welle Ob Text-Bild-Collagen, „Kunstwerke“ aus Büroklammern oder ein Gemälde von Franz Marc: Inhalte und Methoden des Kunstunterrichts können den Deutsch-als-Fremdsprache-Unterricht bereichern – auf fast jeder Niveaustufe.

Die Unterrichtsreihe hat 17 Kapitel, die jeweils aus mehreren Arbeitsblättern und einem Lehrerkommentar bestehen. Die einzelnen Kapitel lassen sich in der Regel in 45 Minuten umsetzen und sind auch unabhängig einsetzbar. Da ist für jeden Kurs etwas Passendes dabei!

Liebe Deutschlehrer/innen in USA, liebe Kolleg/innen, Schon das zweite Jahr unterstützt das Goethe-Institut besonders aktive Deutschlehrer durch die Vergabe von Deutschland-Stipendien an Regionalkonferenzen. In der Zusammenarbeit mit den Geschäftsführer/innen und Vorstandsmitgliedern von NECTFL, SCOLT und CSCTFL hat das Goethe-Institut dieses Jahr drei Lehrerinnen die Teilnahme an einem Goethe-Fortbildungskurs in Deutschland ermöglicht. Wir stellen Ihnen die drei Stipendiatinnen unten vor.

Mitte Juli treffen sich Schüler/innen aus Mexico und USA schon zum dritten Mal zu einem vom Goethe-Institut organisierten PASCH-Jugendcamp in Portland OR. Das Motto von Camp ist „Der Umwelt auf der Spur“ und es gibt den Schülern die Chance, ihre Deutschkenntnisse und ihr Umweltbewusstsein in themenspezifischen Workschops zu entwickeln.

Im Herbst bieten wir einen neuen Gruppen-Online-Sprachkurs für Deutschlehrkräfte, der sich an Lerner auf dem B2 oder C1-Niveau wendet und in seinen Themen und Aufgaben spezifisch für Lehrende konzipiert ist. Sie können sich bis zum 5. September für den Kurs anmelden und gleichzeitig auf ein Stipendium bewerben.

Kreativer Wettbewerb für Studenten Wir laden alle Studenten an Universitäten ein, als Teil des 40-jähirgen Jubiläums des GoetheZentrums Atlanta bei unserem kreativen Wettbewerb Mephistopheles – ein Vergleich mit... mitzumachen!

Mephistopheles, der Antagonist in Goethes bekanntem Stück Faust, gilt als einer der faszinierendsten Bösewichte der Fiktion. Obwohl das Stück hunderte von Jahren alt ist, begeistert der schelmische Mephistopheles weiterhin Zuschauer weltweit durch verschiedene künstlerische Medien. Möglicherweise ist dies der Fall aufgrund seiner Persönlichkeit und unserer Fähigkeit, uns zu einem gewissen Grad in ihn hineinversetzen zu können. Mephistopheles' List, Witz, Intellekt und Charisma sind Wesenszüge, denen man tagtäglich begegnet.

DLL (Deutsch Lehren Lernen): Lehrerfortbildung im Blended Learning Format Deutsch Lehren Lernen (DLL) ist die neue Fort- und Weiterbildungsreihe des Goethe-Instituts für Deutschlehrer/innen, die der praxisnahen Qualifizierung dieser Lehrkräfte weltweit dient – im Primarbereich, in der Sekundarstufe oder in der Erwachsenenbildung.

DLL wird in den USA und Kanada, auf Grundlage des sechsteiligen Basiskurses, im Blended Learning Format mit sechs Kursen pro Jahr durchgeführt. Jeder Kurs besteht aus den folgenden Komponenten:  3 Wochen Online-Phase  2,5 Tage Präsenzunterricht  3 Wochen Online-Phase  2 virtuelle Präsenzsitzungen für die Präsentation und Auswertung der Praxiserkundungsprojekte Der nächste Online-Kurs „Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ beginnt am 3. Oktober (Präsenzphase: 28. Oktober – 30. Oktober in Mexiko), Bewerbungsschluss: 30. Juni. Erfolgreiche Bewerber erhalten ein Stipendium, das die Kurskosten sowie Unterkunft und Verflegung während der Präsenzphase abdeckt.

Mathematikausstellung

GETVICO: Virtuelle Lehrerkonferenz

Die Mathematikausstellung „Mathematik zum Anfassen“ ist da und wir laden Sie, Mathelehrer an Ihren Schulen und Ihre Schüler ein! Die Ausstellung regt zum Staunen und Nachdenken an, stellt dabei die vermeintlich abstrakteste aller Wissenschaften sinnlich dar und macht Mathematik begreifbar—für alle Altersgruppen und ohne jede Vorbildung. Besucher sind eingeladen zu experimentieren: Sie legen Puzzles, bauen Brücken, zerbrechen sich den Kopf bei Knobelspielen, schauen einem Kugelwettrennen zu, lassen wunderschöne Seifenhäute entstehen—und beschäftigen sich dabei immer ganz nebenbei mit Mathematik und der deutschen Sprache.

Das Goethe Institut in Zusammenarbeit mit der AATG veranstaltet am 17.09.2016 (Samstag) eine Virtuelle Konferenz für Deutschlehrer und Deutschlehrerinnen in den USA und Kanada.

Das Goethe-Institut präsentiert einerseits neue Entwicklungen im Bereich der Bildungskooperation und stellt Materialien für den Unterricht vor. Andererseits bietet die Konferenz eine Plattform für Lehrkräfte, zu methodisch-didaktischen Themen Wissen auszutauschen bzw. Best-Practice-Beispiele zu präsentieren.

Die Konferenz wird sich mit allen relevanten Inhalten des Deutsch als Fremdsprache Unterrichts beschäftigen und ist untergliedert in fünf Themenblöcke: „Deutschland aktuell“, “Feedback, Fehlerkorrektur & Binnendifferenzierung“, „Mit digitalen Medien unterrichten“, „Handlungsorientierte Modelle der Unterrichtsplanung“, „Film, Musik und Literatur im Unterricht“.

Im Laufe dieses Jahres ist die Ausstellung an folgenden Orten in Nordamerika zu sehen: 23.05–12.06. Washington 05.09–25.09. Atlanta 03.10–23.10 San Francisco

Interviews mit Goethe-Institut Stipendiaten Deborah Horzen, Cypress Creek High School, Orlando, FL Southern Conference on Language Teaching Wann, wo, warum haben Sie deutsch gelernt?

Ich wollte schon immer ein Austauschjahr in Europa verbringen, und Musik studieren.

Glücklicherweise hatte meine Uni ein Austauschprogramm in Freiburg. Das einzige Problem war, ich konnte kein Wort Deutsch...

Warum haben Sie sich entschieden, Deutschlehrer zu werden?

Da gab es keine echte Entscheidung. Es war eher ein Prozess. Ich hatte eine Stelle als Graduate Assistant, und jemand druckte mir ein echt furchtbar trockenes Grammatikbuch in die Hand und sagte „Viel Spass!“ Irgendwann in den ersten Wochen fiel es mir auf einmal ein, dass man sich beim Lehren nie langweilen wird. Seit 2012 unterrichte ich an der Cypress Creek High in Orlando, Florida, wo etwa 170 Schüler bei mir Deutsch lernen. Das Program ist zurzeit das größte Deutschprogramm in Florida, und bietet die Möglichkeit, Deutsch als IB Language B zu studieren.

Was ist an dem Deutschlehrerberuf am schwierigsten? Was mögen Sie an Ihrem Beruf am meisten?

Das schwierigste—ehrlich gesagt—ist, dass ich so früh aufstehen muss. Aber dafür haben die Schüler genügend Energie für uns alle.

Das Beste an meinem Job ist, dass auch nach 20 Jahren Deutsch unterrichten, gibt es die Möglichkeit, jeden Tag etwas Neues zu erfahren. Ich kann ja nie richtig wissen, genau was sich im Klassenzimmer abspielen wird, auch wenn ich dieses Thema zum xten Mal unterrichte, weil ich ständig experimentiere. Diese Lebendigkeit, diese Plastizität schätze ich am meisten.

An welchem Fortbildungsseminar in Deutschland wollen Sie mit Hilfe des GI-Stipendiums teilnehmen?

Das Thema der zwei Elbemetropole Hamburg und Dresden passt den Interessen meiner Schüler sehr gut. Die großen Unterrichtsthemen besonders in den IB-Jahren sind: Kommunikation und Medien, Modernes Deutschland, Diversität, und STEM. Mir sind die beiden Städten und Gegende relativ unbekannt. Besonders faszinierend finde ich diese Gegenüberstellung, wobei zwei der bedeutendsten Städte Deutschlands durch einen Fluß verbunden sind. Aus der Perspektive meiner persönlichen Erfahrung und mit Hilfe der allerneusten Unterrichtsmaterialien werden meine Schüler die beiden Städte in einem deutschen, europäischen und globalen Kontext näher kennen lernen.

Margaret O. Wilkins, Belvidere High School, Belvidere, NJ Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Wann, wo, warum haben Sie deutsch gelernt?

Ich habe von 1976 bis 1979 an einem amerikanischen College in Lugano, Schweiz studiert. Dort lernte ich italienisch und französisch aber realisierte bald, dass wenn man in Europa lebt, braucht man mehr, um täglich kommunikationsfähig zu sein. Als ich die deutsche Sprache lernte, fand ich eine neue Art und Weise des persönlichen Ausdrucks. Durch Germanistik habe ich eine neue Stimme gefunden!

Warum haben Sie sich entschieden, Deutschlehrer zu werden?

Frau Holman, meine Professorin am Franklin College, begeisterte mich dafür, Deutschlehrerin zu werden. Das ist viele Jahre her, aber ich erinnere mich an die Freude und Begeisterung, mit der sie zu ihren Studenten sprach und somit den Humor der deutschen Sprache zeigte! Ich versuche die Freude, die sie im Unterricht gezeigt hat, auch in meinen Unterricht zu bringen. Nun unterrichte ich drei Stufen von Anfängern bis zur Mittelstufe an der Belvidere High School.

bei regionalen Konferenzen SCOLT, NECTFL, und CSCTFL Was ist an dem Deutschlehrerberuf am schwierigsten? Was mögen Sie an Ihrem Beruf am meisten?

Am schwierigsten ist es, wenn man keine Vorkenntnisse über die deutsche Kultur und Sprache hat. Ich unterrichte jeden Tag einen neuen Aspekt der deutschen Kultur und Sprache. Meine Schüler sind immer wieder erstaunt über alle die vielseitigen Aspekte der deutschen Kultur und Geschichte. Besonders begeistert bin ich, wenn ich bei meinen Schülern die Aha-Reaktion sehe. Letzten Dezember sind wir nach Bethlehem, PA, für den Christkindlmarkt gereist. Das Gefühl von dem Markt war sehr gemütlich und ich war sehr froh, dass ich das meinen Studenten bieten konnte.

An welchem Fortbildungsseminar in Deutschland wollen Sie mit Hilfe des GI-Stipendiums teilnehmen?

Ich würde in Freiburg am Intensiv Kurs teilnehmen. Dieses Thema ist wichtig für mich, da ich viele Jahre Kontakt mit der deutschen Sprache hatte. Ich möchte mein sprachliches Deutsch verbessern. In meinem Unterricht könnte ich die erworbenen Kenntnisse durch Zielsprache einsetzen. Das Beste würde sein, Deutsch sprechend die Schüler zu erreichen!

Maria Herman, Maumee High School, Maumee, OH Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Wann, wo, warum haben Sie deutsch gelernt?

Ich habe begonnen, Deutsch in der High School zu lernen, weil viele meiner Vorfahren aus Deutschland gekommen sind. Auch hatte ich Interesse an Fremdsprachen. Zum Glück hatte meine Schule eine wunderbare Deutschlehrerin und ein tolles Deutschprogramm. Nach 2 Jahren Deutschlernens bin ich in den Sommerferien nach Deutschland gegangen. Als ich dann zur Universität ging, fiel es mir schwer zu entscheiden, was ich studieren wollte. Aber ich wusste, dass ich Deutsch nicht aufgeben wollte.

Warum haben Sie sich entschieden, Deutschlehrer zu werden?

Ich wollte Leuten helfen und die Welt besser machen. Deutsch war (natürlich!) mein Lieblingsfach, und zu dieser Zeit als Studentin an der Uni habe ich gedacht, ich kann Schülern und Schülerinnen helfen, die Welt durch Deutsch zu verstehen. Somit könnte ich nicht nur individuell helfen, sondern auch langsam die Welt verbessern.  Jetzt unterrichte ich alle vier Stufen Deutsch an der Maumee High School, einer kleinen Schule in Ohio. Insgesamt habe ich ca. 100 bis 150 Schüler/innen jedes Jahr.

Was ist an dem Deutschlehrerberuf am schwierigsten? Was mögen Sie an Ihrem Beruf am meisten?

Was ich schwierig finde, ist, dass amerikanische Schüler/innen nicht immer schwer arbeiten. Sie geben nicht ihr Bestes und trauen sich nicht. Viele Jugendliche wollen lieber in ihr Handy schauen, als mit anderen ‘echten’ Leuten, die da im gleichen Zimmer sind, reden. Sie sind nicht immer sehr motiviert. Jedoch genieße ich auch die Zeit mit ihnen. Darüber hinaus genieße ich die Herausforderung, wie ich sie motivieren kann und wie viel Deutsch ich im Klassenzimmer reden kann, damit es ihnen ‘leichter’ fällt, eine neue Sprache zu lernen. Ich mag es auch sehr, wenn ich meine Erfahrungen, die ich in Deutschland gemacht habe, den Schülern und Schülerinnen mitteilen kann. Mir macht es auch sehr viel Spaß, jeden Tag Deutsch zu sprechen und mir neue Wege auszudenken, wie ich Dinge verständlich und lustig für die Lernenden machen kann. Kurz gesagt: Ich liebe meinen Job! An welchem Fortbildungsseminar in Deutschland wollen Sie mit Hilfe des GI-Stipendiums teilnehmen?

Ich werde den ,,Deutsch für Lehrkräfte” Kurs in München machen. Ich will mein Deutsch und meine Pädagogik verbessern sowie die Kultur in Deutschland besser kennenlernen. Ich finde es wichtig als Lehrerin, immer neue Ideen zu bekommen und Lehrmethoden mit anderen Lehrkräften zu diskutieren. Ich freue mich sehr über die Gelegenheit, wieder Studentin zu sein, um meine Schüler und Schülerinnen später besser unterrichten zu können.

The American Association of Teachers of German supports the teaching of the German language and German-speaking cultures in elementary, secondary and post-secondary education in the United States. The AATG promotes the study of the Germanspeaking world in all its linguistic, cultural and ethnic diversity and endeavors to prepare students as transnational, transcultural learners and active, multilingual participants in a globalized world.

With 4,000 members, the AATG serves teachers of German at all levels of instruction and all those interested in the teaching of German. AATG is an allied organization of the Modern Language Association, a constituent member of the Joint National Committee for Languages/National Council for Languages and International Studies, the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations, and an organizational member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the National Network for Early Language Learning, and the Internationaler Deutschlehrerinnen- und Deutschlehrerverband.
