ABOUT THE COVER Diamond Jerusalem is a piece created by Stacy Blumberg Garon, one of our regular evening minyanaires who joins us virtually from her home in Fort Lauderdale. She created this incredible rendition of the Ellman Chapel’s stained glass in a medium known as diamond painting. Stacy describes diamond painting as a mosaic art form that’s a mix between counted cross stitch and paint by numbers. The painting consists of 128,000 tiny resin tiles, known as diamonds because of their sparkle, and it took Stacy six months to create. “I saw a picture of the stained glass on the shul’s website and knew it would make a perfect diamond painting,” Stacy said. “I wanted to make a gift for the shul to show how much I appreciate the minyan service, the rabbis, and the community.” Stacy says she’s been overwhelmed by the positive response she has gotten from everyone who has seen the painting. “I’m so glad everyone likes it,” she says. “Now I just hope to come up to Atlanta someday soon and see the original stained glass in person!”

A Message from the Outgoing President It Takes a Village

s the conclusion of our AA fiscal year r a p i d l y approaches, it’s hard not to be gratified by the progress achieved over the past 24 months in revitalizing and advancing the workings of our beloved Synagogue. With a highly committed and capable clergy, our High Holiday services introduced new and different musical offerings that were universally received as beautiful enhancements to our traditional services. Under the direction of our new Education Director, Sharon Graetz, we have witnessed exponential growth in the level of student and family participation in our Kesher Program. Your Board of Directors took the bold step of entering into a long-term (seven-year) contract extension with Rabbi Blustin, ensuring that, in partnership with Senior Rabbi Rosenthal, continuity of our uniquely talented clergy team will be ensured for years to come. After many years of highly distinguished service to our Congregation as its Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Neil Sandler was named Rabbi Emeritus and has re-joined our AA team, leading periodic Adult Education sessions along with providing pastoral counseling on an as needed basis. Notwithstanding the many significant challenges imposed by Covid-19, we’ve learned to touch our congregants in new and different ways. Virtual participation at weekly minyan and Shabbat services has grown overall participation dramatically. Following a carefully directed ten-month study of trends and practices followed by conservative synagogues, both locally and across the country, our Interfaith Inclusion Committee (with Executive Vice President, Gary Alembik, at its head) led to our congregation’s successful ratification of amended bylaws to explicitly welcome interfaith families to our sacred community.
Your board of directors approved acquiring a parcel of burial lots at Arlington Memorial Park explicitly earmarked for the burial of interfaith families, underscoring AA’s strong desire to accommodate the needs of all its members. Enabled by our successful Capital Campaign, in which more than 300 AA families participated, we are halfway through the renovation of our beloved sanctuary which, God-willing, will allow us to gather safely together for future years’ High Holiday services. For the fourth consecutive year, under the most capable direction of our Executive Director, Barry Herman, the synagogue will again operate with a balanced budget, with combined voluntary Chai dues and Yom Kippur Appeal gifts reflecting the generosity and deep commitment of our congregants. Consistent with the goal established when I assumed the presidency of our congregation back in 2020, we have made significant progress in building the synagogue’s permanent endowment to $10+ million; an achievement of this milestone will help to ensure the financial viability of our synagogue for the next 135 years. None of the above accomplishments could have been achieved absent effective and committed leadership. We are indebted to a uniquely gifted clergy team, to an unusually capable officer group, to a highly committed boards of directors, and to a highly skilled administrative team. It truly takes a village. The commitment and collaboration of your officer group has been nothing short of outstanding, and I would personally like to recognize the efforts of Executive Vice President Gary Alembik, along with Vice Presidents Michael Plasker, Adam Hirsch, Mark Stern, and Nikki Novotny, all of whom have committed extensive amounts of time to advance the workings of our shul. I’m excited for AA’s continued success, noting that we have truly assembled a deep and capable leadership bench to guide our synagogue for years to come. Thank you for the honor to have served as your congregation’s president.

A Message from the Incoming President By Gary Alembik
M
y vision for Ahavath Achim Synagogue is rooted in the ancient Jewish concept of l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation. When I think about the future of our synagogue, I think about the next generation, and the importance of preserving, sustaining, and growing our sacred community to pass on to the next generation.
As Jews, we have an obligation to pass on our values, rituals, traditions, and history to the next generation. What better way to do that than through our Bet Knesset, our place of gathering? Together we will fulfill the meaning of l’dor v’dor. It will take a village, our village, to achieve these lofty goals. I look forward to working with you as we expand our AA family and prepare our shul for the next generation.
Over the course of my two-year term as president, my primary focus will be on membership, education, development, engagement and preparing our physical home for the next generation. We will grow our membership and build a welcoming, thriving, diverse and inclusive community to pass on to our next generation. We will enhance our youth and family education programing, and will seek to grow Kesher, our religious school, and Ahava, our early learning center, to educate our children about Judaism and our traditions and to ensure the continuity of our Jewish people. We will continue our immediate past president Gerry Benjamin’s legacy by building our endowment and securing our financial future for the next generation. We will grow our Tikkun Olam initiatives and Mitzvah projects to inspire and to attract the next generation. We will preserve and improve our physical spaces by upgrading our building to include a remodeled main sanctuary, Cohen Pavilion, and Srochi Hall, new plumbing, a new roof and electrical upgrades.

A Message from the Rabbis By Rabbis Laurence Rosenthal and Sam Blustin as an incubator for spiritual music for the entire Jewish world. Thanks to the generosity of the Marilyn Ginsberg Eckstein Cultural Arts Program Fund and the Sonia Fishkin Memorial Fund, this an annual artist-in-residence program will culminate in a live concert and production of an album of new and renewed spiritual liturgy. Our community has leaned into online technology, inviting people from all over the country, and beyond, to join in our prayer services and our study opportunities. Our AA family is growing, and our synagogue has expanded beyond its walls.
W
’d be lying if we said that this year was easy. We have been reticent to speak about silver linings throughout this pandemic because there has been a lot of suffering. We have, however, learned a lot about ourselves. We have seen great acts of compassion and kindness. We have reached past ourselves and connected with others in new ways, for new reasons, with greater purpose. After two years of wading through this difficult time, we are emerging as something new. We are evolving. Our prayer life has deepened. Prayer for our daily minyan crowd has become a practice, something to which each of us returns, day-after-day, as we meditate on ancient words, using them to find a newness in ourselves. Our dearly departed are being honored and remembered by the way we are acknowledging their impact and the presence of their loved ones who honor them by showing up. Our daily minyan creates a space to hold families as they say kaddish for their first year following a death. The connections and relationships have been so meaningful and healing. Our songbook has expanded. For so many years, the story of song at Ahavath Achim focused on the AA tunes. For those of us in prayer leadership, this phrase, the “AA tunes,” caused an eye roll, because, no matter what tune we sang, the complaint was that it is not the AA tune. Identifying and honoring the original tunes was a daunting task, but it resulted in incredible growth in our prayer songbook. Thanks to Rabbi Blustin and our meshorerim (spiritual singers), we have expanded our songbook to include soul-stirring contemporary and classic melodies. We have also established an amazing artist-inresidence program like no other, seeking to serve
Our Sisterhood has renewed and reinvigorated itself. Its leadership is young, and its membership is diverse. Everybody, young and young at heart, is finding a voice, purpose, and place within this powerful fellowship. Our Brotherhood has also found its place. While not holding big gatherings (once believed the best way to connect), our Brotherhood has found a new life by keeping programming simple, plotting biweekly gatherings all over the city to deepen relationships and support one another. These new trends, however, are becoming systemic. We no longer have a program committee, instead opting for engagement. The success of a program is no longer evaluated in terms of the number of people in attendance but rather by the quality of the experience. Our religious school has a new director and a new focus. Through the leadership of Sharon Graetz and her amazing vision and staff, we are seeing an exponential growth in the families being engaged and the young minds being nurtured and expanded. Our Makom Kadosh, sacred space, is changing. The beatification of our grounds (through the efforts and leadership of Myrtle Lewin and the Greening Group) is apparent; we are contributing to the sanctification of our planet using solar energy and composting; the incredible transformation of our sanctuary is imminent. We are meeting the needs and upholding the values of modern spiritual life while maintaining the history and awesomeness of its past. There are many other ways in which we have evolved. The best way to learn about all of it is to experience it. There are many on-ramps to the spiritual life being fostered at your Ahavath Achim Synagogue. Buckle up!

Ceiling Progress In preparation to hang the ceiling timbers, all the ceiling’s structural components and HVAC registers were painted black to create a neutral backdrop. The 5,000 linear feet of lumber were stained, sanded, and finished before installation in a 4-coat process. Installation of lumber is currently underway as we start off the ark wall. The curved geometry of the wall creates a unique condition where the spacing of each timber must taper by an inch. The installation of new, more modern lighting is also underway. The difference in lighting levels and quality in the Sanctuary is significantly improved!

Dome Finishing
A temporary platform was decked out by the scaffold crew to safely access the dome area for finishing. The oculus and structural truss members have been painted white; this will help reflect as much light into the space as possible. After painting, another application of acoustical insulation is sprayed in-between the steel truss members.

Electrical Work ighting rough-in continues as wires have been fished throughout the L lower-level ceilings and new conduit is laid out in the attic. Much of the wiring is original and needed updating and re-wiring to properly operate the new fixtures that are being installed. Trim out of finished fixtures will begin soon.
Concrete Cutting New air returns have been saw-cut into the elevated concrete-joist floor. Given the disruptive nature of this activity, cutting was done after hours to accommodate the Suzuki School.

A Message from the Director of Education By Sharon Graetz

t has been an incredible year of growth for Kesher, our creative education program for kids three years old through sixth grade. Kesher is Hebrew for “connection,” and connection is at the center of everything we do. We nurture compassionate and curious Jewish learners who draw connections between themselves, their Jewish values and rituals, each other, their community, and their environment. Through hands on experiences, students learn to question, problem solve, and build a more just world. See some highlights from this past year:
We began each Sunday morning together with Havdallah, saying goodbye to Shabbat and welcoming a new week. We also used this space to celebrate what’s good in our week.

Students in Gan, our class for kids three years old and pre-k, explored what’s special about the Torah, getting an up-close look at our holy scrolls.
Our K/1 class studied the value of bikkur cholim, the Jewish value for caring for the sick. Rabbi Rosenthal shared tips on how to visit a friend who is sick. Later, students created care kits, which we delivered to classmates who got sick during the year.
Our 2nd-4th grade class assessed our synagogue’s accessibility during a unit about lifnei iver, the Jewish value of inclusiveness and accessibility. Lifnei iver literally means “before the blind” and refers to the prohibition against misleading people (placing a “stumbling block before the blind”) or allowing a person to proceed unawares of possible danger or culpability. They wrote their recommendations in letters to the rabbis, including suggestions for adding automated doors and elevators to our building.

5th and 6th graders did a deep dive into the Passover Haggadah, learning about its origins and finding themselves in the narrative.
We shared what we are grateful for and prayed for peace in our weekly musical tefillah with Rabbi Sam.
We ended each week with huggim (clubs) and electives, exploring different holidays, values, and traditions using different modalities.
