This is a very exciting year for AAS and the first few weeks were particularly busy!

The 2017-18 school year sees us celebrating our 50th Anniversary and on 15th September (deliberately chosen because of its significance in the Bulgarian academic year) there was a day of celebration.

This included everyone wearing a commemorative anniversary t-shirt, a giant horo, the filling of a time capsule to be opened in 25 years time, an all school picnic and of course, the obligatory birthday cake - which in our case was in the shape of the school! We also man-

aged to manoeuvre 628 bodies into place in the shape of our anniversary logo while a cameraman with a drone snapped the photographs.

Two days later we had our inaugural AAS Anniversary Golf Tournament at Pravets.

Our anniversary celebrations will continue in a Grand Black Tie Gala on 20th January 2018. We hope you will want to join us. Further details are available in this edition of the magazine.

Work on the New Arts Centre Begins!

Finally, after some delays to our plans for Phase IV while we purchased new land and

reworked the design of the main building, we were able to officially break ground on our new Arts Centre on 10th October.

After an audio video presentation to guests that included ambassadors, and secondary students in the Vitosha gym, everyone gathered on our new piece of land, in the sunshine, to witness the blessing of the venture by a priest from St. Nedelya church - in keeping with true Bulgarian tradition. Then, after a grand countdown and a shout by everyone of ‘Can you dig it!’. 20 honoured guests, all wearing hard hats, put their shovels in the ground and turned the fresh soil.

The Phase IV project comprises the Art Centre which includes the construction of a two storey 350-seat theatre, music, fine art and drama workshops.

There will also be a maker space and a robotics specialist area.

In this new building will also be a visitor centre and offices for the admissions and marketing departments.

In addition to the new centre, extra classrooms are also being built in both the elementary and secondary wings to accommodate the expansion in our student numbers.

It is hoped that we will be holding a grand opening ceremony in November 2018!

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT!

he greenhouse is a new addition to the AAS garden in 2017. It was graciously donated by one of our AAS parents to help the development of our gardening opportunities. The greenhouse gives AAS students the chance to develop their gardening skill not only during the warm spring and summer days but also during the winter. Within the greenhouse they can grow food all year round or cultivate seedlings - for example growing tomatoes until the plant is strong enough to survive in the open garden.

As a sustainable school, we are proud of our gardening clubs and we are grateful that we have such a strong community, which supports the further development of our gardens. The greenhouse will give students the chance to learn even more about the food that they eat, where it comes from and how long it takes for it to be ready.

What are your plans for the near future?

I am doing an internship at the London Court Theatre. We get to read the plays, go through the process of casting. This is a good experience as I want to go into directing later. When you are an actor, you mostly do what you are told, whereas when you are a director, you can make your own choices.

In the last year of my studies, I will have an internship, I am also thinking of doing a semester abroad.

I have thought of film acting, but it is much less expressive, as you have to act only in front of

Business Management

How did you chose what you wanted to study?

I honestly had no idea as to what kind of career I wanted to pursue after university. A degree like Business Management was appealing in that it leaves the door open to all industries and is a great foundation to have, no matter what you do after.

How is it living in London?

I love living in London as it’s so incredibly diverse and there’s always so many fun and interesting things to do. Also everyone seems to come to London, so I’m lucky to have most of my closest friends from Sofia here. London can get tiring though, as there’s so many people and I always feel like I’m in a rush. The weather isn’t the best either...and it’s such an expensive city!

How is it having a sibling in the same city?

Amazing! We’ve always been really close and living in the same city as her has always made me feel a bit more at home. We lived together for 2 years, and now she lives just down the road from where I work!

Where do you work at the moment?

I currently work in Client Services at a digital marketing agency called Essence.

What do you miss about AAS?

There are many things that I miss, but the one that comes first to mind is CEESA. My favorite memories include travelling to Helsinki and Kiev for soccer.

Do you think that AAS prepared you

for University and/or job?

Absolutely! Doing IB at AAS really prepared me for university. In fact, I’d even say my first year at university was far easier than second year of IB!

Is there something you wish you had known before you went off to University?

Looking back, I wish I had joined more societies in first year, as opposed to getting involved in them in third year whilst managing a far more demanding workload.

As a frequent visitor to our reunions, what is your opinion of them? (Maybe the importance or not? Should people come to them?)

I really enjoy them! I think the reunions are very important as they help build a strong alumni network, providing valuable opportunities for reconnecting with old faces and meeting new people.

What types of people would King’s College be a best fit for?

If you want to live in the city and study in a diverse, international environment then I recommend King’s for you. I wasn’t really interested in a campus-like student experience and knew I wanted to be in London, so King’s was perfect for me! In regards to my course (Business Management BSc), King’s offers a fairly diverse selection of modules to choose from, so you do have the opportunity to specialize your studies in finance or marketing, for instance.

“I believe my family stayed in Sofia, Bulgaria between the years of 1996-1999. One of my earliest memories of the school was when my brother dropped me off at Ms. Emma Goodchild’s classroom for my kindergarten! I still remember how nervous I was that day. I barely knew any English, or anyone from the class. But I was also very much excited of what kind of adventures I would experience. In the beginning, I only hung out with people who spoke in Hindi and was fortunate enough to have Ankit Aggerwal in my class, who helped me a lot in terms of getting acquainted.”

Liz has often used storytelling to help students reach conceptual understanding, while building character and developing essential learning habits. In her spare time, Liz also writes books to inspire children to be their most courageous selves.

During her AAS orientation, Jim Urquhart asked the new staff, “If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?” Liz shared with the group that she would like to be an author. Becoming an author was a dream for more than ten years.

It wasn’t until October 2016, more than a year later, when a friend and fellow colleague told her, “Stop talking about it and just write!” that she finally put pen to paper.

At first, Liz was inspired to share Bulgarian folk tales that have not yet been recorded in

the tale of Stobb’s Pyramids after visiting the a weathered signboard at the site revolved around an arranged marriage, a beautiful veiled bride, a strong wind, a taboo kiss, and a reaction so strong it turned everyone to stone.

Liz was enchanted with the idea and had fun developing the project, but she found it was just not the story that was inside her.

A short time later, a former student of hers approached her about creating a writing club.

“I want to write a book!” the then fifth grade student exclaimed. When Liz answered, “Me, too!” They agreed to meet weekly during recess and lunch. Because of this student’s desire to write, Liz found that she also had to write regularly, in order to honor the club’s foundations. It was during this time that she began to nurture the draft for debut children’s book, When Worry Takes Hold.

LIZ HASKE’S BOOK WHEN WORRY TAKES HOLD

Liz discovered that When Worry Takes Hold, which is based on her own experiences, was the story she had been waiting to tell. As she began to write, she found that the book was just there, waiting to be written down. Of course she went through a lengthy and continuous revision process, but with a little nudging from her fantastic network of international teacher readers, it came together.

In November 2017, the Worry series was officially launched. When Worry Takes Hold is the first in the series. The book, which was awarded the Readers’ Favorite 5 Star status, aims to empower children with strategies such as mindful breathing and self-talk. Liz is currently working the next book in the series which will address school performance anxiety. Nadezhda Dimitrova, an AAS graduate in the Class of 2017 who is now studying at MIT, has been awarded first prize for Creative Nonfiction in the 2017 Claudia Ann Seaman Awards for Young Writers for her piece, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Across From Our Home.â&#x20AC;?

Nadia wrote this story last year whilst still a student at AAS. The award was established in memoriam of young poet Claudia Ann Seaman, in partnership with the international run student literary magazine, Polyphony HS, to recognize excellence in student writing.

During her time at AAS, Nadia was a prolific writer and artist. She was a member of the Lux Svetlina editorial team for four years, serving firstly as Assistant Editor, and then Editor in Chief of the magazine.

ACROSS FROM OUR HOME Nadezhda Dimitrova

A

t the end of Pavlikeni, there lived my family. On the hill yonder was the cemetery ― surrounded by a forest on the left, a vineyard on the right ― and our house in front of the cemetery entrance. It was only me and Mama, who spent all her time working in the Kombinat za opakovki, the cardboard factory. She often brought home colorful cardboard ― unusable boxes with mistaken shades and smeared captions. I folded them in the twilight, while the light faded outside and the fire, reinforced by cardboard, crackled cheerfully inside. The gluttonous flames licked the colored cardboard, creating new hues and highlights in the fireplace; the gluttonous flames first licked them, as if tasting for color ― for sweetness, for joy. They radiated warmth toward me and smiled at me gratefully. The flames often turned red before continuing onto the next colour. But the most charming of all was the turquoise. It reminded me of Mama’s pickles.

Most people fear fire. Not me. I spoke to the flames which frequently gave me ideas about games or told me things about the world.

Neighbors and even people at the other end of town worried that our unprotected house might one day burn down, but I knew the flames would always protect me.

Because there was no one to look after me at home, Mama sent me to the kindergarten, but that lasted only three days. So I was stuck at home again. I spent most of my free time ― which was all of my time ― alone. I embraced my solitude in the cemetery. There were some trees between the graves, and “stately” perched on their branches were three families of ravens “with mien of lord or lady.”

I listened to their pleasant warble and often I joined their singing with improvised tunes of my own. Occasional visitors shouted at the ravens to leave their deceased in peace. What grave misunderstanding of the harbingers of powerful secrets and guardians of ancestral memories.

With time, the cemetery came closer and closer to us. Our village, Pavlikeni, was a small one, and as there was no cemetery space in any other direction and people continued dying, they began digging graves on the hill

across from our home. I often heard the elders nag how the young had moved to the big city, never to return again. Babies coming into the bright world were a special celebration as no lads remained, and the population grew smaller.

People said that one day our house would be in the midst of the cemetery, too. That didn’t make me sad in the least; I didn’t see how that would change our lives. I asked the ravens if that were true, and they simply told me not to fear the Night’s Plutonian shores.

On Sunday evenings, shortly before dark, I picked bouquets of the flowers people left on the graves. I chose the prettiest flowers, took them home and put them in the jar that had just been emptied of Mama’s pickles. When I became a student, I brought the bouquets to the teacher on Mondays. She had once been to our home and thought the flowers came from our garden.

Mourners brought black crosses made from wooden planks to the funerals. Carved into them were the names and dates of the dead, carved so that spirits would recognize their graves and know their way home after their nightly walks. And also the ravens assured me they would guide any wandering ghost to his bedchamber before morning broke. But after a few months, the spirits could tell their way home. And so, when the flowers on a grave faded and the pile of dirt slumped and dried, I dragged the crosses home.

They couldn’t wait for the fire, to make friends with the cardboard boxes. They popped so blissfully, and the flames jumped up and down, and became golden and hot. It was most pleasant at home. Mama was there and she was always smiling. And the flames told beautiful stories of the dead. Usually Mama spared the stumps and never let me put two crosses in at once so we could have enough to last the frosty winter, and so the stories never crossed.

I walked very frequently to the cemetery; it was both my park and playground. At school, the teacher and other kids were mostly terrified of ghosts, but Mama and the ravens talked dearly about them. I was there mostly during

the day, so I never met the ghosts, although I wished I could meet one and hear something about my father, as Hamlet did. In any case, it was most pretty when a funeral was held. You could feel the world and the afterworld connect.

When the mourners left, they left new crosses, flowers, and sometimes cookies.

While roaming the cemetery’s paths to sate my boredom and beguile my empty stomach, I often found snacks and wine on long-abandoned graves. As if someone was watching for me from above. Or rather below. I thanked them, and they nodded in approval. I put the items in a plastic bag and poured the wine into an empty plastic water bottle. People had their vices, Mama said, and hers was red wine.

That’s how I spent my childhood in the graveyard. From there we ate and drank, from there we took our warmth, and from there came our flowers. Mama said: “Let God be merciful and forgive us, for we have no money.”

These days, I work in a hotel in London. I don’t go back to Bulgaria, but every day I meet

people from around the world and I listen to interesting stories. Some travelers have also spoken with nature; others fear and misunderstand as did my neighbors in Pavlikeni. I think they do so because they are not used to death and do not understand the natural cycle of life; they are afraid of their own perishability and insignificance.

Mama lives in the cemetery, now, which reached all the way to our house, just as the people and the ravens said it would. When they called me to tell me that Mama passed away, I flew back to Sofia, and arrived at the little village of Pavlikeni in a few hours. While I was travelling back home, my thoughts were travelling to my childhood. I tried to laugh because I remembered how Mama used to say: “Now we live across from the cemetery, and in a few years, I will move to live across from our home.

And that is how it happened. Exactly across from our home. As if with the treats, with the crosses and with the flowers, I had carried the cemetery into our home.
