Worsbrough Bridge Athletic: A History
The club was formed in 1923 as Worsbrough Bridge St James in 1923. After the Second World War they were renamed as Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and then Worsbrough Bridge Miners Welfare in 1959. They played in a local Barnsley league until 1961, when they joined the Sheffield Association League. They won the league title in 1965–66 and 1969–70 and also played in the FA Amateur Cup during the same era. In 1971 they joined the Yorkshire League, winning promotion to Division Two in their first year. The following season they lost in the final of the Sheffield Senior Cup to Worksop Town at Millmoor but were promoted again in the league, to Division One. They stayed in the Yorkshire League’s top flight for three years before being relegated, and by 1979 they were back in Division Three. The club had entered the FA Cup for the first time in 1978. When the Yorkshire League merged with the Midland League to form the Northern Counties East League (NCEL) in 1982, Worsbrough were among the founder members of the new competition, being placed in Division Two South. They were subsequently moved around the NCEL following several league restructures, before winning promotion from Division Three to Division Two in 1986. In 1991 they won promotion again to reach Division One, and have remained at this level since. In 2006 they changed their name back to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

A Quick Word Are we ready folks? Yet another Tuesday night game coming! This time we travel to Worsbrough, and hopefully we can get back to winning ways, it’s been a few games since we won. I feel we’re overdue one, and if we play to our strengths, we could get a strong result Tuesday. Mansfield was disappointing but I know for a fact we can play a lot better than that if we put our minds to it. However the supporters turned out in force, it’s great to see we have a sturdy little away day support group as well as the lots of you supporting from home. I hope my live commentary on the social media is helpful to those who aren’t at the games. As someone said to me the other day, we’re a brand new club essentially, and we’re going to have setbacks in our time. However like a boxer we get up off the canvas each time and push harder to make sure we don’t go down again. This season will go down as the ‘Club On Tour’ season, and so it should! If we can play all these games away and still grab promotion then the world is our oyster. Like the old song goes, if we can end the season with promotion, then we did it our way. Last Time Out AFC Mansfield 1 (Williams, 59) Hull United AFC 0 AFC Mansfield profited from a wasteful Hull United as Ryan William’s goal separated the two teams. United tasted defeat for the second time in a week following a poor attacking display. It was a goalless first half, but by no means was it an uneventful one. Both sides were up for the game, with United having more of the possession and were arguably the better side in the first period. 20 minutes in United were the first to have a real chance. A cross in from the right missed all the United players but hit the bar and bounced out. Then a couple of minutes later Mansfield had their ‘keeper to thank as a well-timed shot in the area was expertly saved. Mansfield then came within inches of the opener. A melee in the United area saw the ball cleared off the line onto the bar and cleared away. However this was the closest anyone got before half time. As the hour mark approached, ex-Hull City winger Williams received the ball just inside the area, and fired his shot across goal and into the back of the net. Arguably Mansfield’s only real chance of the game went in. United’s strikeforce had an off day, with Gary Bradshaw waltzing through the defence but lacked the composure to slot it home. The experienced striker snagged his chances and the usually calm and composed attacker failed to make an impact. United failed to score and now sit eighth after two defeats in a matter of days. A strong defensive performance but the composure and power up front struggled against a solid but sometimes below par Mansfield side.

Interview With The Boss
Following United’s demoralising 1-0 loss to AFC Mansfield, Aaron Irwin spoke to Citizens boss Curtis Woodhouse about the defeat. AI: Were you disappointed with today’s result? CW: “Yeah, can’t believe how we’ve lost that game to be honest. We made enough chances to win two games, but once again toothless in front of goal. You can’t keep saying it, we’ve made chance after chance after chance, and miss miss miss. That’s what happens when you don’t take your chances.” AI: Players like Gary Bradshaw looked a little…out of touch out there… CW: “Yeah, Bradders has got to take responsibility out there. Again missed a couple of chances and that’s what he’s in the team for, to put the ball in the back of the net.” AI: Would you say for Tuesday to maybe drop him and bring in Poucher or even Josh Tennent? CW: “No, I haven’t even thought about Tuesday yet, it’s not about any one person. We had three or four different people who missed chances out there. It’s not a case of dropping anybody. We’re playing Saturday-Tuesday over and over again until the end of the season, no one will be getting dropped. But the team will be changed obviously, to freshen things up.”
#UnitedWeStand AI: What did you make of their goal? It was quite a nice finish. CW: “Yeah it was a good finish by Ryan Williams he’s got good quality, and a good finish, took it really well. Think it was their only shot on target all game.” AI: So we’ve lost these two, I’d say, big games, are you starting to get worried we’re not going to make the play-offs? CW: “We’re up against it, we’re behind the 8 ball a bit, having every game away from home, so it’s difficult. It is what it is we’ve got to battle on. I think especially today there was no way they were a better team than we were. But once again if you can’t score, you won’t win games and we can not score. You look at the teams up there, they’ve all beaten someone five, six, seven, even eight nil. We haven’t got that in the locker yet and as I say, toothless in front of goal.” AI: Do you find it annoying we’re playing so well and just getting nowhere with it? CW: “Beyond annoying. Frustrating. Bottom line is that the lads haven’t been good enough, simple as that.” AI: Would you say the whole situation of us having to play all our games away has ruined our season? Or even our position at the top of the league? CW: “Yeah most definitely, I’m more than confident that if we’d have had a home ground we’d have won the league. Simple as that.” AI: So you’re not worried about us missing out on the top six? CW: “No I’m not worried about anything, football doesn’t worry me one bit, so I’m not worried about it we will finish off where we deserve to finish. If that’s in the top six we’re there on merit, if we’re not it’s because we wasn’t good enough. It doesn’t worry me, it’ll be what it is.” AI: I’ll try to end it on a positive note, there was some good defending. I mean we conceded but we held strong for most of the game. CW: “We defending outstanding. James Piercy was a different class, his best game in a Hull United shirt all season. I’ve just said to him that if I was playing in our defence I’d be asking some serious questions of our frontmen. Cause they’re defending putting their bodies on the line, and we can’t score, simple as that.”
