Shirebrook Town: A History

The club was founded as Shirebrook Colliery, and joined the Central Midlands League. In 1985–86 they won the Senior Division, and were promoted to Division One. In their first season in Division One, they finished second, and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1993 the club changed its name to Shirebrook Town. They won the Supreme Division of the Central Midlands League in 2000–01, but were not promoted due to ground grading issues. The following season they won the league again, and this time were promoted to the First Division of the Northern Counties East League. After finishing as runners-up in their first season, they were not promoted due to ground issues. However, the following season (2003–04) they won Division One, and were promoted to the Premier Division, where they remained until 2010. The club was relegated back to Division One at the end of the 2009–10 season. After spending most of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 season in the middle part of the table former player Gary Castledine was appointed manager after former manager Micky Taylor left the club to take over at newly formed club AFC Mansfield. However Gary reign didn’t last long and after 10 games of 3 wins and 7 loses he was sacked by the club and replaced by formed Sheffield FC manager Mark Shaw, who managed to guide the club to a respectable 6th position however during the close season Mark left to take over at Evo-Stick side Worksop Town.

A Quick Word I’m genuinely gutted I’m not at the game this weekend. A family commitment means I’m not travelling to Shirebrook, so I’ll be relying on the live feed, like most fans at home. It’s going to be a weird feeling, as this is the first game I’ve missed since I started working here back in October. It promises to be a great game too, with Sihirebrook sitting directly above us in the table. They’re four points clear so I’m eager to see us close that gap and keep touch with the teams above us. We’re into the final ten games of the season and it’s time to battle and make every game count. As cliche as it is, these are ten cup finals, and we can definitely win them all. Tuesday we were incredible, and that game was crazy. 4-0 lead at half time, a goal within two minutes and three red cards! These games are coming at us and we just have to take them game at a time, but a win tomorrow would be a huge statement of intent from us. They’re a good side and I’m sure the lads can bring back the three points. Who knows guys, we may just win promotion after all... United, United We Stand. Last Time Out Hull United AFC 5 (McNamara, Bradshaw, PEN, Richardson, Hill, Poucher) Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 0 Hull United got back to winning ways in emphatic fashion thanks to a 5-0 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic on Tuesday night. The game was filled with goals and sendings off after referee Mehdi Najefi sent off three men, including United’s Matt Plummer. Nicky McNamara, Gary Bradshaw, Jamie Richardson, Shane Hill were all on the scoresheet as well as an own goal to top things off. After their disappointing defeat to AFC Mansfield on Saturday, United wasted no time in taking the lead as within two minutes, McNamara curled a magnificent effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Within ten minutes United were two up, as Worsbrough’s ‘keeper brought down Brett Agnew in the area, and to add insult to injury was sent off with Agnew being last man. Bradshaw stepped up and slotted the penalty into the bottom right corner. United never looked threatened, and substitute Richardson, on for an injured Tom Bennet, managed to slide the ball into the goal after a small melee in the area. Within half an hour it was 3-0 to the Citizens. Ten minutes before half time United had a 4-0 lead, as Richardson fired in a pinpoint cross which Hill managed to put in the back of the net. Heading into half time and United had scored four. The first time since November that the Citizens had scored four in a game. On the hour mark United made it five, with Lewis Poucher’s run and shot deflecting in off a defender. Technically an own goal but Poucher did a lot of work to get the shot off. However things started heating up after the hour mark. With 20 minutes to go, Plummer was shown a red card by Najefi, initially it looked like a rash decision from the referee but following consultation it appears Plummer stamped on one of Worsbrough’s men, warranting the red. Soon after Worsbrough were down to nine as following a tackle from a United man, he lashed out and pushed him. Najefi gave him a second yellow and gave him his marching orders, allowing United to cruise to victory.

Interview With The Boss

After a huge 5-0 win for Hull United on Tuesday night over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Citizens manager Curtis Woodhouse spoke to Aaron Irwin regarding the game. AI: So, a good win tonight. CW: “Yeah, good win. I’m delighted with the clean sheet and to get a few goals on the board so I’m happy. It was a difficult pitch, very difficult surface to play on but I thought at times we played some good football.” AI: Would you say it was a perfect response to what was an annoying game on Saturday? CW: “Yeah, really frustrating Saturday. I still can’t understand how we came away with nothing on Saturday, so it was important that we bounce back and a good win. Especially with it being one of our games in hand, it was important that we got the three points. It was a good performance as well.” AI: Off that result we’re back in the play-offs, do you think now is the time to try and solidify that spot now and make it ours? CW: “Yeah I said to the lads before the game that it’s important that we get in there and stay in there. We’re in there now, we just have to do the second part now and actually stay in there.” AI: Also we have the best defence in the league, another clean sheet tonight, anything to say regarding your defence? CW: “I always say defence starts from the front, and I think Gary and Brett worked really hard today. I’m obviously delighted to have the best defensive record in the league, and defending is a team effort.”

#UnitedWeStand AI: You can’t really rule out Lewis Poucher, he came off the bench and worked his socks off, he had a really good game. CW: “Yeah he’s excellent Pouch, he’s done really well since he’s been here and constantly coming on and scoring goals. He’s always knocking on my door. It’s a difficult one to select the side, fortunately we’ve got plenty of options up front. Since Poucher’s been here he’s been a breath of fresh air and been excellent for us.” AI: I’m trying to avoid it but I can’t, the referee, He tried to make the game about himself a bit. CW: “Like I say I never really talk about referees, they’ve got a tough job. The pitch was awful and some of his decisions I disagreed with but he’s the man who’s in charge. I respect his decisions even if I did disagree with them.” AI: Is there any word on Plummer? Do you know why he’s been sent off? CW: “Yeah he kicked out at their striker that’s what the ref’s said to me, he’ll get a three game ban for violent conduct.” AI: It’s not his first red card of the season either, I assume that adds to his ban? CW: “Yeah it might be more than three games and we can’t afford to lose him so, frustrating.” AI: Speaking of losing players, Macca went down for a while in the first half is he alright? CW: “Yeah, the way Macca’s eating that pizza now I think he’s alright yeah. But he’s had a bit of a bang on his knee. Fingers crossed he’s fit for Saturday. Benno’s picked up a knock as well so we’re low on numbers at the minute, and we’re going to need everyone now we’re playing Saturday-Tuesday until the end of the season. So while I’m happy with the three points, I’m probably a little bit frustrated. We made a few calls early on today with some reinforcements hopefully coming soon.” AI: Macca’s goal was nice wasn’t it? CW: “Great goal by Macca yeah, he’s a quality player and all season really he’s been a different class for us.” AI: Now you turn your thoughts to Shirebrook on Saturday, are there any initial thoughs on how you’re going to attack that game? CW: “No, not yet, I’ll address it on Thursday really and see what team I’m going to have out really, who I’ve got available and try and get a game plan going from there. Might have to patch a few up for Saturday.” AI: So you’re happy with tonight’s game? I know the referee tried to overshadow it but good result? CW: “I’m happy with the result, I’m happy with the clean sheet, and I’m happy with the three points. I’m happy that we’re now sat in the play-offs and like I said to the lads, we’re in there now, stay in there.”
