Rossington: A History
The club came into existence in 1919 as Rossington Main Colliery, making their FA Cup debut in 1921. They competed in the FA Cup until the Second World War, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in 1924, losing 0–3 to Lincoln City. They played in local leagues such as the Doncaster & District Senior League and Sheffield Association League up to the 1970s (having changed their name to Rossington Miners Welfare in 1948), before entering the Yorkshire League in 1975. Their stay in this league lasted just five seasons, finishing in the lower echelons of Division Three on each occasion. The club entered the Central Midlands League (CMFL) in 1983 after renaming themselves Rossington Main. They won the Premier Division title in 1985 and were promoted to the Supreme Division a year later. In 1991 they joined the Northern Counties East League (NCEL), entering Division One. In 1998, the club amalgamated with Rossington F.C., who had been members of the CMFL (although never in the same division as Main). Although officially a merger, Main were the senior partner and their name and league placing was retained. They have remained in Division One since joining the league, only finishing as high as 7th, in 2012.

A Quick Word The league just doesn’t like us does it? 15 points deducted and yet we can STILL make the play-offs! If that isn’t testament to Curtis, Ash and the whole squad then I don’t know what is. The fact we could have been fighting for top two or the title with them points is unreal. Also this is our first season in the NCEL and we’re in the top fighting for promotion. I say credit needs to be given to the ones who’ve assembled the squad and got us this far. This is the start of a mental week with four games in a week. I’m sort of excited to see how well we can do. We have 12 points to grab, so we can essentially earn back the points we lost. However with the last game being Mansfield that one could turn juicy. We have a week, lets get right behind the lads and cheer them on, the play-offs aren’t out of reach! We are United, we are now and we will always be. All we have to do is just not let the others who believe we’re not good for the league be right. If we keep the faith the results will come! United, United We Stand. Last Time Out Glasshoughton Welfare 1 (Fawcett, 26) Hull United 2 (Hill, 50, 90) Hull United sealed another win as two Shane Hill free kicks, one in injury time, saw the Citizens win 2-1 at Glasshoughton Welfare. Kris Fawcett opened the scoring with a rebounded effort sliding under Phil Dobson to give the hosts a half time lead. However Hill scored two free kicks in the second half and with the last in injury time, United sealed another three points on the road. The first half was end to end and looked like it’d go either way, as was the tempo of the whole game. First chance came to United, some nice hold up play from Gary Bradshaw and laid off for a shot, but the shot hit the post and the chance went begging. Just past the half hour mark Glasshoughton were one up. A free kick was drilled at Dobson, who saved it only for Fawcett to slot in the rebound and give the hosts an arguably undeserved lead. A couple of minutes later United were almost level. A cross into the area was met by Jamie Richardson whose header was cleared off the line by the Welfare defender. This gave the hosts the lead over half time. United came out with some intensity and were constantly fighting and five minutes in were given a free kick around 25 yards out. Hill stepped up and hit it into the top right hand corner. A wonderful finish from the winger, who had given United a deserved equalizer. The second half was littered with half chances and a usual occurrence with the Citizens sprung up again. Tom Giblin mis-played his ball and let in the striker, but when trying to atone for his error he brought down the Glasshoughton man. Referee Colin Unwin sent the young defender off for being the last man. Just when the game was heading for a draw, United got a free kick in a similar area to the first goal. Hill stepped up again and a carbon copy of the first goal as he scored in added time. A last gasp win for United who go into a busy final week in red hot form.

Interview With The Boss
After Hull United’s 2-1 win over Glasshoughton Welfare, newly reinstated boss Curtis Woodhouse spoke about the game. AI: Firstly welcome back! we don’t do it the easy way do we. CW: “No, just said to the lads in the dressing room, their desire to always go to the end is second to none. They’re a credit to the football club. We never give up, we never lie down, and that’s why we score a lot of goals in the last minutes because we have the desire to go to the end.” AI: Has Shane been practicing them free kicks in training? CW: “Definitely not, Shane’s got loads of quality and yeah, two great free kicks today but no, I wish I could take credit for that but I can’t.” AI: I suppose the new chant is “we only need 10 men.” CW: “We’re experts when we go down to ten, it’s been that often now. I
#UnitedWeStand said to the lads in the dugout, as soon as we go down to ten men I know exactly what to do. Cause I don’t know how many we’ve had sent off this year but it’s too many.” AI: Do you reckon the red was a deserved one? CW: “Well I think he was the last man and he brought him down so yeah by the letter of the law, you’d have to say yeah wouldn’t you?” AI: I’ve been chatting to some of the fans and they said it was a good team performance, we stuck in there to the end. CW: “Yeah, As I said it’s a Tuesday night the lads have been grafting all day and then they come and put a shift in like that, they’re an absolute credit to the football club.” AI: We’ve got a tough week ahead, four games in a week… CW: “Bring it on” AI: Are you ready for it? CW: “Yeah I’ve spoken to Ash and he’s going to be making his debut in this next week. The lads are ready and we’re short on numbers. But as I said we give our best in every single game and that’ll be no different over the next week. It’s going to be a very tough period for us.” AI: Are we going to see yourself on the pitch as well? CW: “Definitely not, not with the size of my belly.”
