Knaresborough Town: A History

The club were very successful in the York Football League during their early days under the name Knaresborough Football Club, winning the championship in 1902–03, 1903–04 and 1904– 05, the latter of which was achieved with a 100% record. The club was folded at the start of World War II, but reformed under their original name, the name of Knaresborough Football Club due to financial problems. Soon after the Town part of the club’s name was restored. They did not return to the York League however, in the following 25 years they played in the West Yorkshire League and the Harrogate and District League. They also moved to their current ground Manse Lane by the end of the 1950s. For a long period from 1972 onwards, they were a part of the Harrogate League. Only to be accepted back into the West Yorkshire League as recently as 1993–94. They marked their return to the league in style, winning the Premier Division League Cup final against Sherburn White Rose 3–1 at Queen’s Terrace; Ossett Albion’s stadium. The Whitworth Cup was won in 1995 and the Hulme Cup in 1999 & 2004. The Reserves had success with League and Cup wins in the West Yorkshire League, doing the double in Division Four in 1994–95 and followed that by winning the Division Three title the following year to gain promotion into division two. It was after this season that the Premier Alliance Division (now called Alliance Division One) was formed for the reserve sides of the Premier Division teams. The Reserves have won the Premier Alliance Division League Cup in 1998–99 and again in 2003–04. Under the management of Rob Pearson and Colin Lacey the Club won the Whitworth Cup in 2005–06. Brian Davey brought it back to Knaresborough in 2007–08 and finished a creditable third in the West Yorkshire League Premier Division. In Brian’s words his objective was to improve on that position the following season and he certainly stood by those words, winning the West Yorkshire League Premier Division Title in 2008–09.

Last Time We Met Saturday 15th August 2015

Knaresborough Town 2-1 Hull United AFC Lees, 4 Lenehan, 32 og Whitehead, 49

After an undefeated start to the season, we travelled to Knaresborough to try and keep it going. Things weren’t looking good when Toby Lees put the hosts 1-0 up within four minutes. We got back into it thanks to WIll Lenehan’s own goal, but just after half time Graham Whitehead scored what proved to be the winner. This condemned us to our first defeat of the season, but can we avoid a repeat result on Saturday afternoon?

A Quick Word Another long trip in store for us on Saturday, a tough journey to Knaresborough. It’s a long one but I reckon the lads could produce a result for us to make the long trip worth it. It’s a great time for the club now we’ve put all the negatives behind us, with the club issues and the rough December. I was gutted that Dronfield was called off, that’d have been a great game to watch, but considering it was on a Tuesday night and with Dronfield a good 77 miles away I’m almost glad it was binned off, as I’m at uni at 9 on Wednesdays. As the head of the media department at the club, I’d like to boost the profile of the club. Now the only thing is I have a bunch of ideas but I aren’t sure which ones to do. I’m thinking of creating a huge magazine to co-incide with the end of the season, with player and coach interviews, huge features and something for you guys to enjoy. I have a few ideas and if you want to have a word with me about them then please do so! I also would just like to personally thank everyone who offers me lifts to the games, I feel so rude having to rely on people to get me to games but I really appreciate it, makes the experience all the better! Enjoy the game everyone and see you there. United, United We Stand. Aaron Irwin Programme Editor Twitter: @AaronIrwin7

Last Time Out Eccleshill United 0 Hull United AFC 2 (Poucher, 32, 37) Hull United put their cup exit behind them as a stunning first half performance sealed a 2-0 win for The Citizens over Eccleshill United. Two quality goals from Lewis Poucher secured the three points. His first was a wonderful volley before hitting the second from range just minutes later. The second half saw United seal out the hosts and get back to winning ways following cup defeat to North Ferriby last week. The visitors were dominant throughout the opening period. Poucher and strike partner Gary Bradshaw were attacking well, the latter holding the ball well for Poucher with both looking dangerous. It took until the half hour mark for United to break the deadlock, with James Piercy sending in a wonderfully weighted cross which Poucher volleyed home with aplomb. The pressure was piling on Eccleshill and Poucher’s strike was just reward for the dominance United showed. Six minutes later United doubled their lead, with Poucher grabbing his second with a long range finish. He shot from around 30 yards out and his shot dipped beneath the bar and beat the ‘keeper. The visitors were in control, and went in at the break unlikely to surrender their lead. The second half was about consolidating the win and that’s what United did. It threatened to turn scrappy with some 50/50 tackles going in from both sides. However United held firm and secured a fantastic clean sheet. With fixtures coming thick and fast throughout March, United’s squad depth may just be the key to success, with eight games in the next month.

Starting XI v Eccleshill

Interview With The Boss

Following United’s 2-0 win over Eccleshill United, Aaron Irwin spoke to Citizens boss Curtis Woodhouse about the win, the goals and a big month ahead for the team. AI: I suppose the best place to start would be the performance, what did you make of it? CW: “I thought first half we were exceptional. We were really really good and I think we should have been five or maybe six up, I don’t think that’d have flattered them. First half we were fantastic some of our passing and on a difficult surface we were a different class. The thing that I’m more pleased about is our second half performance. We really dug in and grit it out, some of our defending at set pieces, players putting their heads in where it hurts, so yeah, really happy.” AI: Would you argue they were the better team second half? CW: “No I don’t think they were, I just think with the wind obviously going down the hill, they had us under pressure. I can’t remember second half Dobbo having a shot to save. I think they had a lot of territory but with the wind and the hail that has to be expected. We always looked dangerous on the break and I thought, if anything we were going to get a third.” AI: Two lovely goals from Lewis Poucher… CW: “Yeah, you can tell he’s full of confidence, and that first goal was Alan Shearer-esque! So yeah delighted for him. He’s followed up his goal away at Grimsby. Said to him before the game the best way to stay in the team is to score goals and that’s three in two so I’m delighted for him and not only that but his work ethic, which is first and foremost what I expect from the team, and

#UnitedWeStand he epitomised it today.” AI: What did you make of Dobbo’s yellow card today? CW: “I was just saying I think Dobbo probably has the worst discipline of any goalkeeper I’ve ever known! He’s had two red cards and four yellows so yeah, for a goalkeeper, he’s chalking up them bans but, never a yellow card I didn’t think. I never complain about the referees because they’ve got a hard enough job, but I thought the yellow card was harsh.” AI: We got a clean sheet today would you say that was a nice psychological boost for the defence? CW: “Yeah definitely, we needed that as we haven’t had one for a while. I said to the lads before the game, ‘it was only eight weeks ago we had the best defence in the whole NCEL’, so it’s good to get a clean sheet. I thought Footy gives us a real push, he’s a leader out there, he’s a good signing for us.” AI: Got a bit of a problem coming up, eight games in March? Are you looking forward to it or is it going to be a problem? CW: “Not when you’re winning it’s not. When you’re winning you want the next one on. So hopefully I mean I said to the lads that discipline is vital and not to pick up any silly suspensions. Plums has picked up a little hamstring issue so fingers crossed he’ll be fit for Tuesday. If we can keep everybody fit and everybody on the pitch we’ll be fine.” AI: Is it key that we’ve got good squad depth so you can just rotate the team? CW: “Yeah most definitely, like I say Jack Walters didn’t come back from skiing until about 12 today so it’s good to have him back. Jimmy was away today, Shane Hill was away as well. Josh Tennent as well so we’ve still got players to come back into the squad to be available for Tuesday. It’s important to have a strong squad because we will need everybody.” AI: We missed Brett last week because of his ankle, is it still a bit of a problem now? CW: “No he trained on Thursday and did a full session on Thursday. He also got half an hour today so Brett’s fully fit and ready for selection.” AI: Finally we missed Nicky McNamara last week, would you say his presence in the team’s a big boost to us? CW: “Most definitely yeah. He’s a good player and today different class and when I said about people putting their head in where it hurts, I think we had two set pieces cleared off the line and it was Macca both times so yeah he’s vital to the team, he could maybe do to get a little fitter, but he’s a big player for us.” AI: Best look forward to Tuesday then yeah? CW: “Yeah, bring it on!”
