Hemsworth Miners Welfare: A History

Hemsworth Miners Welfare Football Club was formed in 1981 following the disbanding of Hemsworth Colliery Football Club the previous year. The new club joined Division Three of the Doncaster and District Senior League. In 1985–86 the club were promoted to Division Two. Following back-to-back promotions, they reached the Premier Division in 1987–88. After winning the Premier Division Cup in 1995, the club switched to Division One of the West Riding County Amateur Football League. In 1996–97 they won both the league and the Division One Cup, and were promoted to the Premier Division. The following year they won the Premier Division Cup, a feat repeated in 2001. In 2008 the club were accepted into Division One of the Northern Counties East League, where they have remained since.

Last Time We Met Saturday 22nd August 2015

Hemsworth Miners Welfare 1-1 Hull United AFC Connolly, 25

Richardson, 35

We managed to grab a draw last time we faced each other. In August we travlled to the MDC Stadium and despite Nash Connolly opening the scoring for the hosts, Jamie Richardson managed to grab the equaliser for us. We’d love a repeat result tomorrow night, but it won’t be easy. However stranger things have happened, and could we see the lads grab a good result tomorrow night?

A Quick Word Here we go again, mad March is here everyone! Eight games in a month, and the Premier League teams say they have it hard. Tomorrow we face Hemsworth, they’re top of the league and look lie a sure bet for promotion this season. It’s not an easy game by any means, and I’m hoping we can pick a result up and make the journey over there worth it. I’ve said my piece about Knaresborough and we should put that behind us, let’s hope we can consolidate that top six place we have currently. We have such a good squad at the moment, with Dobbo in goal looking solid. That save he produced on Saturday was ridiculously good. Also our defence is top notch, Plums, Piercy, Footy, and the other lads are all superb. Midfield has always been a solid position and with Gary Bradshaw and Lewis Poucher coming in to shoulder the burden of goalscoring with Brett Agnew. We have a fantastic team and it’s a pleasure to follow this team and work for the club. United are on the up, and I know for a fact we are going to be a force to be reckoned with. I’m sure we’ll also have a ground to call our own next season. I’m sure the guys behind the scenes are working hard to give us a ground. I hope to see you all there tomorrow night, if I can get there myself! United, United We Stand. Aaron Irwin Programme Editor Twitter: @AaronIrwin7

Last Time Out Knaresborough Town 0 Hull United AFC0 Hull United and Knaresborough Town played out a 0-0 draw at Manse Lane, with both sides having half chances but neither could break the deadlock. In a game bereft of clear cut efforts on goal, United ‘keeper Phil Dobson produced a strong display exemplified by a great save midway through the second half, with Knaresborough having a late penalty appeal turned down. Both sides started the game attempting to get a hold of possession and settle into a rhythm, but after exchanging the ball throughout the half, neither could show any dominance. There were a few tough tackles going in by both sides but neither could register a real shot on goal. Nicky McNamara managed to have the first chance ten minutes from half time. His shot from the edge of the area on the turn sailed over the bar. However it started a sustained period of pressure from the Citizens. United had another chance when a long ball was controlled well by Gary Bradshaw, with the striker taking a touch before seeing his shot go just over the crossbar. However it wasn’t to be and the first half ended goalless. Knaresborough, who withstood the United pressure well, had their first chance when a flick on from a corner went just wide. But this was a taste of things to come as Dobson produced a world class save. A volley in the area looked like it was sailing into the goal, but Dobson got a hand to it and expertly kept it out. United couldn’t find a way past Knaresborough despite a long period of pressure towards the end. Their dominance and possession counted for nothing when referee Colin Unwin called for full time. Not before Knaresborough had a penalty appeal turned down, with the man in the middle judging the Knaresborough man to have dived. A point for Curtis Woodhouse’s men on a day when it could easily have been three, had it not been for a resolute Knaresborough team.
