Hallam: A History
Although formed in 1860, the football club can trace its links even further back, to 1804, when the owner of the Plough Inn public house on Sandygate Road agreed to allow a new cricket club, Hallam CC, to start playing on an adjacent field he owned. The club had in excess of 300 members by the 1850s,and in 1860 it decided to form a football club to oppose Sheffield F.C., formed three years earlier. On Boxing Day 1860 the two clubs played each other on Sandygate Road for the first time. The match report for the game in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph states that the game was played between 16 of Sheffield and 16 of Hallam and Stumperlowe (Stumperlowe being a hamlet half a mile from Sandygate). At the end of the 1932–33 season the landlord of the Plough Inn public house decided to lease the Sandygate Road ground to other teams (Crookes WMC and later Fulwood) as Hallam weren’t providing enough bar takings. Although the club retained its affiliation with the local FA, Hallam’s eviction from their ground saw them refrain from playing any football for a period of 15 years. Hallam’s return to football came about in 1947 when they finally arranged a return to Sandygate Road, playing in the Sheffield Amateur League and the re-formed Hatchard League (which they won) before finally re-joining the Sheffield Association League in 1949, winning the title for the first time. A year later Hallam won the Sheffield Senior Cup for the first time when they beat Stocksbridge Works at Hillsborough in front of 7,240 spectators, and in 1952 they entered the Yorkshire League. That same season an Amateur Cup tie with Dulwich Hamlet was switched to Hillsborough stadium because of increased ticket demands – the attendance of over 13,000 proving to be a club record. After winning promotion to the top flight of the Yorkshire League for a second time in 1960, Hallam spent twenty years playing at the same level. The 1982–83 season saw the demise of the old Yorkshire League, with Hallam entering the new Northern Counties East League (NCEL), which demanded more stringent ground grading rules. With only seven years of its ground lease remaining the club could not commit to expensive improvements. Protracted negotiations with the landlord eventually led to a 99 years extension being granted but a large premium was demanded within one year. A massive fund raising effort secured the new lease and continued for the provision of floodlights, first used in 1992, and a stand behind one goal to shelter 100 people. The club has spent most of its time in the NCEL in the Premier Division (which currently sits at level 9 of the English football league system), but in 2011 they were relegated back to the First Division. In 2004 the club won the NCEL’s League Cup competition when beating Mickleover Sports at Buxton F.C.’s Silverlands ground. In 2012 Sandygate Road received a much needed facelift, paid for by a posthumous donation by a lifelong supporter who had left the club a substantial amount of money in his will.

A Quick Word We’re at the oldest ground in football! This is a big game, Hallam sit in and around us in the league table and so it’d be great to seal the win and another three points. It’s been a tough week but the gaffer is right, we just have to keep going. Show no signs of weakness and no one can affect you, it’s only if we let these naysayers get to us that we cheat ourselves. We’ve got seven games left, that’s 21 points, even if we lose the appeal we can make play-offs. it won’t be easy but since when has supporting United being easy? We’re doing it the hard way this season and I’m certain with a bit of luck and good fortune we can still get promoted this season. If we lose the appeal so what, it’s not the end of the world, we will still be here. It may mean no promotion but oh well, Rome wasn’t built in a day was it? I hope you all enjoy the game tomorrow and I hope to see you all there. Let’s get another three points and keep on marching up that table! United, United We Stand. Last Time Out Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 0 Hull United 3 (Bradshaw, 4, 49, Richardson, 85) A routine 3-0 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic means Hull United end a troublesome day on a positive note. A Gary Bradshaw double and a Jamie Richardson goal sealed the win for The Citizens, and following the 12 point deduction, the win was well received. The play-off push continues with Worsbrough rarely threatening Phil Dobson’s goal. It took five minutes for United to get on the scoresheet. Following a foul by the Worsbrough man in the area, United had a penalty. Bradshaw stepped up and slotted it under the ‘keeper, who went the right way, to give The Citizens the lead. The visitors could easily have had six or seven with several goals being chalked off for United. The first was on 20 minutes when we strayed offside before slotting it in the goal. However this served as a wake-up call for Worsbrough. They started to push and put pressure on United, but young defensive duo Tom Giblin and Kealan Coxon handled it well and were well composed throughout. Richardson almost put United two up shortly before half time with a curling effort going just over the bar. Two minutes into the second half United somehow missed the chance to double their lead. A Shane Hill cross was dropped by the ‘keeper, a shot was cleared off the line before new signing Chris Coy scuffed his shot and the ball was cleared. However moments later the Citizens put things right as Bradshaw’s header supposedly crossed the line. Though the lead was almost instantly halved as a Worsbrough man fired a shot at goal. It looked like it was going in until Dobson produced a sublime save to deny the hosts. 15 minutes from the end Bradshaw almost had his hat-trick as he fired just wide from being one on one with the ‘keeper. Youth though was key for boss Curtis Woodhouse as six teenagers were on the pitch at one time. This included 16 year old Regan Horn and the 17 year old Giblin. The midfield won the game for United as Tom Bennett and Nicky McNamara controlled the game from the middle. Midfield partner Richardson ran onto a ball over the top and slotted it home in the bottom left corner to seal the win for United.

Starting XI v Worsbrough
Interview With The Boss
Following the 3-0 win over Worsbrough, Aaron Irwin had a word with United manager Curtis Woodhouse to get his thoughts on a troublesome day for the club. AI: So we’ve won 3-0, what do you think of our performance? CW: “Yeah I thought we were very good. Delighted again with the clean sheet, which is becoming a real feature of our play now, defending really well and Dobbo whenever he’s been called upon has been excellent. Delighted, another three points!” AI: We snatched at a few of our chances I mean we could have won seven or even eight nil. CW: “Yep, definitely yeah it’s that bobbly it’s so difficult to hit a clean strike. It was difficult at times but yeah, it could have been a lot more than it was but just delighted with the win and another clean sheet really. It puts us in good stead.” AI: Solid debut for the two new lads. CW: “I thought Kealan was really good at the back headed everything, did what’s required of him and I thought Chris Coy looked excellent. I thought him and Bradders linked up really well and Chris is going to be a really good player for us. He’s sharp he’s strong he’s quick, a good finisher, everything you want from a number nine really.” AI: We saw a few youngsters come in like Regan Horn came in, is that something you’re keen to do with these last seven games? Trying to bring some more youth into the team?
#UnitedWeStand CW: “I mean if you look at since I’ve been here, it’s something that I believe in. Like I said I’m a product of Sheffield United’s youth team I was given my chance at 16/17 so I understand and appreciate that young kids need that confidence to put them in. Tom Gib, Kealan, Regan, Foxy, all young lads. So it’s nice to get them in and be a part of it. I think at one point we had six teenagers on the pitch. Jack Walters you forget Jack is only 19, so yeah it’s great and it’s good. I enjoy giving young lads a chance. I don’t care how old you are if you’re good enough you’ll get your shot.” AI: Do you think they have the potential to keep out the bigger players? Like your Matt Plummer’s? CW: “Yeah definitely. I think it’s important that you don’t obviously put too much pressure on the young kids. You’ve got to bring them in, take them out give them a taste. Foxy has played a couple then ben out and back in, that’s what it’s all about. Bringing them on at the right time and in certain games. But like I say we’ve got our experienced players and it’s good to sprinkle it with a little bit of youth. We didn’t have Plums and Footy today, and they’re two big players for us. So they’ve got an important part to play for us. It’s good to know that you can put a brand new back four together and still keep a clean sheet.” AI: We all know what’s happened off the pitch, but we’ve got another three points so are you still aiming for the play-offs? CW: “No yeah we’re still aiming for the play-offs. We’ve got 12 points deducted and the club’s appealed that. It’s not really my department, my department’s what goes on on the pitch and I think with everything that’s gone on this season the one constant has been the lads and the team continuing to churn out performance after performance. I think the lads can take a lot of credit from that. So our job’s just to continue, I’ve said to the lads we’ve got around eight games to go, we’ve got to win all eight. I think if we win all eight we’ll be in the play-offs.” AI: So there’s no mentality change? As far as you’re concerned nothing going on off the pitch concerns what’s going on on it? CW: “Well I said to them you know for me there’s no excuses. Nothing’s happened to the lads in there that affects them really. We were still aiming for the top two, so to win the top two I said to the lads, you’ve got ten games to go you’ve got to win all ten if you want to be in the top two. I believe that, so now we’ve got eight games we win all eight, now we can aim for the play-offs. So nothing’s really changed on our side, we’ve still got to win the last eight games.” AI: Finally, with Hallam on Saturday are you tempted to start any of these young lads? CW: “Yeah, definitely yeah. I’m not averse to putting young kids in, I’ve proved that since day one that I’ve had the job. So I’ll address that on Thursday, see how we get on a training. Make sure everyone’s come through and nobody’s got any knocks or anything. The reason I didn’t play Footy tonight is because he’ll play on Saturday and as long as you sprinkle it with youth and experience it normally goes a lot better. When I pick the team I don’t think about how old anyone is I pick them on what I think will be best to win that game. So yeah.”
