Dronfield Town: A History
The club traces its history back to the 1860s with the first usage of the name Dronfield Town appearing in the 1890s. The club continued until the start of World War One. The club briefly reappeared in the 1920s but didn’t last long. Another brief revival took place in the 1950s. The next attempt was in 1973 and started life the following year as a Sunday League club, playing in the Sheffield Sunday League. However, lack of interest caused the club to fold in 1996. Two years later Dronfield Sports AFC, a club fielding various junior teams, changed its name to Dronfield Town and shortly after an adults team called Dronfield Cavaliers was formed. The Cavaliers took the Dronfield Town name in 2000–01 and were soon playing in the Midlands Regional Alliance. In 2009, they joined the Central Midlands League Premier Division. A second-placed finish in their debut season was them earn promotion to the Supreme Division where they finished in 7th. When the league was reorganised Dronfield was placed in the North Division. In their first season in that division they finished third. The next season they were CML North Division champions and were promoted into the Northern Counties East League Division One for 2013–14

Last Time We Met Saturday 15th August 2015
Hull United AFC 3-0 Dronfield Town Agnew, 2 Richardson, 56 Start, 88
In our first home game of this season, we hosted Dronfield at Dene Park. It was a convincing win for the Citizens with a solid 3-0 win. Brett Agnew got United off to the best start possible with a goal just two minutes into the game. The Citizens went in 1-0 up at half time and shortly after the break United doubled their lead. Jamie Richardson scored and all but sealed the win, before Matty Start put the icing on the cake for Curtis Woodhouse’s team minutes from time. Could United repeat this scoreline when they travel to Stonelow Road on Tuesday evening?

A Quick Word These games are coming thick and fast aren’t they, as Tuesday we head to Dronfield. Firstly what a nightmare fixture this is to get to. For someone who can’t drive it’s horrible, I aren’t even sure I’ll be at the game. However should I be there I’m certain we will get another fantastic result. Saturday’s win over Eccleshill made me feel so proud to be working for this club. Lewis Poucher’s goals were stunning, the first was brilliantly set up by James Piercy. There’s a real buzz around the club again following a tough couple of months, and I’m so glad it’s back. The fans are happy, with many saying how well we played Saturday and after chatting to Curtis he felt the same way. We are on a roll again, and I have no doubts we will perform well again. We are currently in a fantastic position with a big squad and multiple choices in every position. I know Dronfield is essentially in Timbuktoo, but should we be able to get there, I’m sure the lads would appreciate it. It’s not easy with a lot of us working or studying at Uni/college, but we had to expect that when we became fans of this club. Also I hope the live feed I did on Facebook/Twitter on Saturday was helpful for fans who didn’t go to the Eccleshill game. Should I be there Tuesday I hope you enjoy the game! Last Time Out Eccleshill United 0 Hull United AFC 2 (Poucher, 32, 37) Hull United put their cup exit behind them as a stunning first half performance sealed a 2-0 win for The Citizens over Eccleshill United. Two quality goals from Lewis Poucher secured the three points. His first was a wonderful volley before hitting the second from range just minutes later. The second half saw United seal out the hosts and get back to winning ways following cup defeat to North Ferriby last week. The visitors were dominant throughout the opening period. Poucher and strike partner Gary Bradshaw were attacking well, the latter holding the ball well for Poucher with both looking dangerous. It took until the half hour mark for United to break the deadlock, with James Piercy sending in a wonderfully weighted cross which Poucher volleyed home with aplomb. The pressure was piling on Eccleshill and Poucher’s strike was just reward for the dominance United showed. Six minutes later United doubled their lead, with Poucher grabbing his second with a long range finish. He shot from around 30 yards out and his shot dipped beneath the bar and beat the ‘keeper. The visitors were in control, and went in at the break unlikely to surrender their lead. The second half was about consolidating the win and that’s what United did. It threatened to turn scrappy with some 50/50 tackles going in from both sides. However United held firm and secured a fantastic clean sheet. With fixtures coming thick and fast throughout March, United’s squad depth may just be the key to success, with eight games in the next month.

Starting XI v Eccleshill
Interview With The Boss
Following United’s 2-0 win over Eccleshill United, Aaron Irwin spoke to Citizens boss Curtis Woodhouse about the win, the goals and a big month ahead for the team. AI: I suppose the best place to start would be the performance, what did you make of it? CW: “I thought first half we were exceptional. We were really really good and I think we should have been five or maybe six up, I don’t think that’d have flattered them. First half we were fantastic some of our passing and on a difficult surface we were a different class. The thing that I’m more pleased about is our second half performance. We really dug in and grit it out, some of our defending at set pieces, players putting their heads in where it hurts, so yeah, really happy.” AI: Would you argue they were the better team second half? CW: “No I don’t think they were, I just think with the wind obviously going down the hill, they had us under pressure. I can’t remember second half Dobbo having a shot to save. I think they had a lot of territory but with the wind and the hail that has to be expected. We always looked dangerous on the break and I thought, if anything we were going to get a third.” AI: Two lovely goals from Lewis Poucher… CW: “Yeah, you can tell he’s full of confidence, and that first goal was Alan Shearer-esque! So yeah delighted for him. He’s followed up his goal away at Grimsby. Said to him before the game the best way to stay in the team is to score goals and that’s three in two so I’m delighted for him and not only that but his work ethic, which is first and foremost what I expect from the team, and
#UnitedWeStand he epitomised it today.” AI: What did you make of Dobbo’s yellow card today? CW: “I was just saying I think Dobbo probably has the worst discipline of any goalkeeper I’ve ever known! He’s had two red cards and four yellows so yeah, for a goalkeeper, he’s chalking up them bans but, never a yellow card I didn’t think. I never complain about the referees because they’ve got a hard enough job, but I thought the yellow card was harsh.” AI: We got a clean sheet today would you say that was a nice psychological boost for the defence? CW: “Yeah definitely, we needed that as we haven’t had one for a while. I said to the lads before the game, ‘it was only eight weeks ago we had the best defence in the whole NCEL’, so it’s good to get a clean sheet. I thought Footy gives us a real push, he’s a leader out there, he’s a good signing for us.” AI: Got a bit of a problem coming up, eight games in March? Are you looking forward to it or is it going to be a problem? CW: “Not when you’re winning it’s not. When you’re winning you want the next one on. So hopefully I mean I said to the lads that discipline is vital and not to pick up any silly suspensions. Plums has picked up a little hamstring issue so fingers crossed he’ll be fit for Tuesday. If we can keep everybody fit and everybody on the pitch we’ll be fine.” AI: Is it key that we’ve got good squad depth so you can just rotate the team? CW: “Yeah most definitely, like I say Jack Walters didn’t come back from skiing until about 12 today so it’s good to have him back. Jimmy was away today, Shane Hill was away as well. Josh Tennent as well so we’ve still got players to come back into the squad to be available for Tuesday. It’s important to have a strong squad because we will need everybody.” AI: We missed Brett last week because of his ankle, is it still a bit of a problem now? CW: “No he trained on Thursday and did a full session on Thursday. He also got half an hour today so Brett’s fully fit and ready for selection.” AI: Finally we missed Nicky McNamara last week, would you say his presence in the team’s a big boost to us? CW: “Most definitely yeah. He’s a good player and today different class and when I said about people putting their head in where it hurts, I think we had two set pieces cleared off the line and it was Macca both times so yeah he’s vital to the team, he could maybe do to get a little fitter, but he’s a big player for us.” AI: Best look forward to Tuesday then yeah? CW: “Yeah, bring it on!”
