We stand on the brink of a revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and connect with each other. In many industries, some of the most sought-after jobs and skillsets did not exist ten or even five years ago, and the pace of change is accelerating.

Implications of future socioeconomic disruptions will be felt in every aspect of the Danish society. Although automation is more applicable to routine jobs, professions such as doctors, consultants, and investment analysts are now also exposed. The idea that computers are incapable of exercising judgment or being creative is outdated. From the health sector to the financial sector, robots and advanced algorithms can now perform tasks previously performed by human workers.

Technological progress raises difficult questions about the broader impact of automation on jobs, skills, and wages. Some fear that these changes will result in even greater inequality due to workers being made redundant. Others emphasise the prospect of new jobs being created as history has shown several times before. As labour is automated throughout the Danish economy, how can leaders realise potential benefits of this revolution while mitigating negative consequences such as increasing inequality?

Throughout his successful academic career, David Budtz Pedersen has been vocal in public debates addressing the role of humans in a future increasingly dominated by automation. He is an expert on how our self-perception affects what it means to be human. This understanding is more important than ever as robots and artificial intelligence fundamentally change the role of humans in society.
