Foreword AARHUS FESTUGE 2016 – UPSIDE DOWN It’s that time of the year again. The time for one of the biggest annual events in Aarhus, Aarhus Festival. We are proud to welcome you to a 10 day festival where we will turn everything on its head. We are turning the city upside down and inside out. This year Aarhus Festival presents a great number of experiences. Whether you steer determined towards conventional stages or prefer to take a leisurely stroll through streets, squares and parks, Aarhus will be teeming with surprises, sensuality, light, sound, fragrances and flavours throughout the Festival. The Festival presents a wide range of events. From an appearance by a bona fide music star in the flesh as rapper L.O.C. returns to the town of his birth for his only show of the summer - to the Japanese virtual pop phenomenon Hatsune Miku performing at Musikhuset Aarhus. Catch up with the latest from the musical underground at The City Stage in Mølleparken and along the city’s stream, engage in Satie’s 150-year-old 14-hour performance and enjoy art, theatre and dance inside as well as in the urban space and – as always – films, conversations, satire and debates. Make sure you also visit Bispetorvet where Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich literally turns the city upside down. Aarhus Festival is created in the city, for the city and – most importantly – with the city. It belongs to you and me. You could probably find a grand quote from Gandhi or Obama, but I will go with one from rock legend Iggy Pop: “… all of it was made for you and me, ’cause it just belongs to you and me, so let’s take a ride and see what’s mine…” Let that be the message from us: Enjoy the Festival – it belongs to you!

Unofficial Opening

L.O.C.

Liam O’Connor has gone from ’Absinthe’ to ’Champagne’, from ’Frk. Escobar’ to ’Diva’, and from ’Evig ungdom’ to ’Testamente’. Now he returns home to his birth town with a gift in the shape of a great concert at Aarhus Festival’s unofficial opening. One of Denmark’s biggest musical acts takes the stage in the city where it all began with a group of friends and a couple of beats some 20 years ago. Since then L.O.C. has toured intensively, recorded several albums and released the most downloaded album in Danish music history with ‘Prestige, Paranoia, Persona Vol. 1’. The concert will be L.O.C.’s first this year and the only chance to see the artist and entertainer on stage this summer.

Official Gala Opening

Keiichiro Shibuya / Hatsune Miku: Vocaloid Opera ‘THE END’ Witness the Japanese animated superstar flip the concept of pop stardom upside down in a magnificent, visually rich and alternative opera experience

In many ways she is exactly like so many pop stars of today: millions of fans all over the world, sold-out concerts in huge stadiums, designer clothes and hundreds of hours of video material on YouTube. However, Hatsune Miku differs from the rest in one very particular way: she is not human. She is an animated 3D-character with a computer-generated voice that usually sings songs written by her many fans, who contribute through specially developed software. One of her biggest fans is Keiichiro Shibuya, one of Japan’s most renowned young composers, pianists and DJs. He has written the music to the alternative vocaloid opera ‘THE END’, in which Hatsune Miku’s synthetic voice is mixed with classical elements and electronic music performed live on stage by Keiichiro Shibuya. In the lyrics, the eternal 16-year-old Hatsune Miku ponders her own immortality. ‘THE END’ is visually and aurally an overwhelming experience that is sure to surprise and fascinate the audience.

Rooms that Speak During the Festival, music enters beautiful places that usually preach faith, values or politics and creates a special atmosphere as room and music combine.

Den Sorte Skole in Aarhus Cathedral

Den Sorte Skole embrace Aarhus Cathedral with a concert specially adapted to the church’s atmosphere and acoustic challenges. With a diverse collection of samples, ranging from Arabic lament to industrial noise, the duo build on their latest two records and their collaboration with composer Karsten Fundal and Copenhagen Phil. Obscura-Vertigo and Kasper Daugberg will wrap the cathedral’s space in light in a concert that unites musical genres, cultures and moods.

SOLBRUD in Langenæskirken Last year, Danish black metal band Solbrud released their second album, ‘Jærtegn’, and with its sparse production and rough expression it evokes the early days of black metal in Norway in the 90s. The record received quite a bit of attention, and Solbrud have played Roskilde Festival and Copenhell. Langenæskirken’s bright space is in clear contrast to the band’s dark music, adding a different dimension to the concert.

Rooms that Speak

LISS + support: SILVESTER in Sankt Johannes Kirke Aarhus band Liss are on the verge of their big breakthrough nationally and internationally. Performances at P3 Guld and a critically acclaimed concert at this year’s SPOT Festival have attracted the attention of Danish audiences, while none other than Pharell Williams has singled the band out and praised singles like ‘Try’ and ‘Always’. The four young lads impress with catchy and quirky pop melodies, with lead singer Søren Holm’s characteristically nasal voice leading the way. The supporting act is Silvester, which consists of experienced musicians from CTM, Emma Acs, etc.

MOGWAI in Aarhus City Hall The Scottish rock band perform the music from the film ‘Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise’ as the film is screened. Mark Cousins’ film investigates the human relationship to nuclear technology and the development from the Hiroshima bomb to life-saving medicine. The music encompasses dreamy melodies, distorted guitars and hopeful synth harmonies to underline the duality of the immense power and potential of nuclear power. Aarhus City Hall, Rådhuspladsen 2 1 September 9.00-10.10 p.m. (doors at 8.00 p.m.) 225 DKK (175 DKK with student discount) via aarhusfestuge.billetten.dk Aarhus Festival. Sankt Johannes Kirke, Peter Sabroes Gade 20 30 August 8.00-10.00 p.m. (doors at 7.30 p.m.) 120 DKK (80 DKK with student discount) via aarhusfestuge.billetten.dk Aarhus Festival. Thanks to Sankt Johannes Kirke Yes

I THINK YOU’RE AWESOME in Risskov Kirke Over the past five years this group have established themselves on the music scene, embracing the American song-writing tradition, folk music, improvisation, pop and African rhythms. The concert in Risskov Kirke is a reworked version of their compositions adapted for the church. They have replaced their two drummers with cellist Maria Isabel Erdlund to accommodate the acoustic challenges. With a grandiose sound and simple melodies, they work with themes such as love, youth and loss. Risskov Kirke, Solbakken 2 4 September 4.00-5.00 p.m. Free Risskov Kirke Yes

New Musical Currents ‘Understrøm’ is a new music festival for the growing music scene in Aarhus, spotlighting the many talented and hard-working concert organisers that the city has to offer.

Understrøm

During the course of two days and at four new venues along the city’s stream, free concerts will take place with a line-up chosen by the different organisers. SPOT Festival and Studenterhus Aarhus each curate their own day at two of the stages, while the rest of the festival’s programme is made up of acts chosen by showcase festival Oppenheimer, concert and party organiser Uncle Tang, festival Lyd+Litteratur, underground festival Mono Goes Metal and concert organiser Limbo Collective.

As a part of Understrøm, Dokk1 houses two events on Saturday. The film ‘Born to Lose’, about musician Lorenzo Woodrose, is screened, followed by a conversation between Lorenzo and the film’s director, Palle Demant (1.00-3.30 p.m.). Also, the sample duo Den Sorte Skole explain their creative process (11.00 a.m.-12.30 p.m.). See the final schedules for each of the Understrøm stages at aarhusfestival.com

New Musical Currents

THE CITY STAGE Mølleparken is transformed during the Festival as some of Aarhus’ music institutions put the city’s musical talent on display at The City Stage. During the week, newcomers will play alongside established professionals at free concerts and shows. Experience a selection of highlights from The Royal Academy of Music, hip hop from Aarhus er Fresh!, concert with Katedralskolens Big Band, kids’ show with Skrallebang and rock music with URO – Ung Rock I Aarhus.

FLUX FESTIVAL – VICE VERSA Flux Festival and Aarhus Festival showcase the thriving alternative and innovative music scene in Aarhus with the new festival ‘Vice Versa’. The line-up is inspired by Aarhus Festival’s theme and presents everything from hip hop to light installations. The artists have the common feature that they challenge the perception of music. The line-up includes acts such as CTM, Babyfather, Equis, Why Be and DJ Sports, and they will be playing the first weekend of Aarhus Festival at TAPE, Kvindemuseet and SpLab.

CONCERT/MARATHON, ERIK SATIE — VEXATIONS To mark French composer Erik Satie’s 150th birthday, his piece ‘Vexations’ will be played at Aarhus Festival. Following the composer’s instructions, the one-minute piece will be played 840 times with uninterrupted piano, adding up to a 14-hour concert. Changing groups of musicians from different genres will interpret the piece, and during the 14 hours it will constantly develop and move in new and unexpected directions.

New Musical Currents Ujazz defies the boundaries of what is traditionally known as jazz. Artists chosen for ther originality and vision will treat the ears to experiences they are unaccustomed to and reward the audience with one-of-a-kind musical moments

Ujazz

As the name implies, ‘Ujazz’ is not really jazz – at least, not in the traditional way. At this one-day festival, audience and musicians alike are faced with a new way of understanding and defining music. The artists have been selected for their artistic vision, and they each bring performances that will push the boundaries for both listeners and performers. However, if you accept the challenge, you will be rewarded with outstanding musical performances. The one-day festival will be held at VoxHall and Atlas, and – as a new addition this year to underline the festival atmosphere – there will be an outdoor stage in front of Atlas, with no entry fee. Schedule 4.00 p.m. Black Nothing, Atlas 4.40 p.m. Boujeloud, outdoors 5.20 p.m. Kentaur, Atlas, 6.10 p.m. Røgsignal, outdoors 6.50 p.m. Klimaforandringer, Atlas 7.30 p.m. Lowly, VoxHall 7.50 p.m. Volcano the Bear, outdoors

The City Upside Down...

Bâtiment Crawl around on a building like a regular Spiderman when Aarhus Festival ignores the laws of physics and instead makes way for play and imagination. ‘Bâtiment’, the French word for building, is a large installation by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich. After a visit to Aarhus he allowed himself to be inspired by the architecture and designed an Aarhus façade that will be built on the ground at Bispetorvet. The façade will be projected via a giant angled mirror to appear as a completely normal, erected building. Jump from one floor to the other, take a vertical stroll on the wall or relax on a windowsill in this illusion of a building that shows the city from a perspective you have never seen it from before.

Bispetorvet 26 August-4 September 10.00 a.m.-21.00 a.m. Free Aarhus Festival. With support from Danish Art Foundation, European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017, Købmand Herman Sallings Fond, Beckett Fonden og Børn og Unge, Aarhus Kommune Only partially

... and Inside Out

URBAN BACK YARD TOUR Aarhus contains an array of scenic back yards, secret alleys and great stories. Some of them are found along the main shopping street, and if you venture where you might think you are not allowed, you will find quite a few surprises. AddSomeArt and Aarhus Festival have created an alternative route through the city centre, from the twisting back yard at Sankt Knuds Torv to the snail-house-like parking house at Salling. The route goes over a viewpoint and through a back yard exhibition, and ends with light at the end of a hallway. It also includes a treasure hunt for the children.

From Sankt Knuds Torv to Fiskergade 26 August-3 September 10.00 a.m.-8.00 p.m. Free Aarhus Festival in collaboration with AddSomeArt and FO-Aarhus. Thanks to Salling, Harman and ALECTIA Yes

BAZAR FEST A diversity of smells, tastes and cultures moves to Store Torv and changes the atmosphere of the central square completely when Bazar Vest brings some of the many stalls and shops to the Festival. All week the Festival’s guests can experience the typical bazaar feel in new surroundings in a meeting between the well-known open square and the lively exotic buzz from Bazar Vest in Gellerup. Store Torv 26 August-4 September 9.00 a.m.-9.00 p.m. Free Aarhus Festival in collaboration with Bazar Vest Yes

... and Inside Out

The Blue Bridge

Aarhus Å is a central part of the city’s DNA, but ‘The Blue Bridge’ offers the chance to experience it in a new way. Solar-powered boats glide quietly through the water and offer passengers a rare opportunity to look at the city from the stream. A new boat sails from the lush and green area at the stream’s source in Brabrandsøen to the city centre. Experience the journey from untamed nature to the urban landscape in a heartbeat as you duck under the low bridges.

NB: Planned departures may be cancelled in case of heavy rain or elevated water levels.

Musical Traditions Turned Topsy-Turvy

AARHUS FESTIVAL CONCERT: AARHUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, KAREN KAMENSEK, CARMEN LINARES AND VANESA AIBAR Carmen Linares is one of the best flamenco singers in the world, with a successful career lasting more than 45 years and a status as a national star in her homeland of Spain to prove it. Her voice is hypnotic, wailing and beautiful at the same time. Joining her on stage is flamenco dancer Vanesa Aibar, who is the physical manifestation of the genre, with relentless handclaps and seductive hand motions. Together they make up part of the concert in which the orchestra and conductor Karen Kamensek will play music with Spanish undertones, including Ravel’s ‘Bolero’.

GRAVITY WAVES In 1916, Albert Einstein introduced his theory of relativity, marking a new era for traditional physics and for the understanding of gravity. Exactly 100 years later, scientists have discovered gravity waves, and found that these can be heard. This has inspired composer Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard to write the piece ‘Gravity Waves’, which will be premiered at two shows at Dokk1. Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard has translated the sound of gravity waves into an orchestral piece for horns, hihats and sine tones. Parks and Squares Music tents, dance performances and exciting new festivals are some of the many good reasons to take a trip to the city. And there is no better place to start than the family-friendly City Park.

The City Park

Play, education and relaxation sit side by side in the green City Park between Musikhuset Aarhus and City Hall. Early birds can start the day with yoga and gymnastics, and the children can take a ride on the mini-train after visiting Cirkus Krone. The Danish Museum of Energy entertains with a science show, there is an introduction to the art of fencing, and Falck teaches first aid to schoolchildren. Aarhus Showband will make the park resonate with music, and the smell of delicious street food at Officerspladsen will stimulate your appetite. These are just some of the events taking place in The City Park, where there will be activities every day during the Festival.

You can meet Nordic growers, chefs and producers and try new flavours, engage in interesting debates about food or be inspired to improve your own cooking. WHAT’S ON THE MENU? The festival features food enthusiast Timm Vladimir, the national final of Local Cooking 2016, beautiful surroundings and a great atmosphere, the national hotdog championships, a knife-sharpening class, award-winning chef Rasmus Munk from Restaurant Alchemist, workshops, lectures and courses, local entrepreneur and Masterchef judge Jesper Koch, edible insects, a debate about food waste, River Cottage, beer tasting, and much more.

Invitation

Reception for Expats

RECEPTION FOR EXPATS Aarhus Festival invites expats and their families to a special reception where you can relax with your family and meet other foreigners living in Aarhus. Over the years, the reception for expats has become a much looked forward to tradition, and last year 700 people participated in the event. You will be welcomed by the Mayor of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard. Afterwards you will be treated with some light refreshments prepared by chef Lars Kyllesbech, the founder of restaurant Mefisto in the old Latin Quarters, and freshly made Italian ice cream by the popular Paradis. Taking place in the heart of Aarhus, the reception is just a stone’s throw from a number of other entertaining and engaging festival activities for the whole family, making the reception the perfect excuse for a day of family fun.
