01 Dancers’ Home
Quadrangle Courtyard of Artists Personal Work Project Location: Beijing, China Tutor: Yue Guo (E-mail: yueg@mid-aa.com) GFA, Gross Floor Area: 751 ㎥ Located at the East Street Forty-one in the Dongcheng District, it is one of the several old towns in Beijing with a relatively long history. With the rapid development of city, the old town has been encircled, day after day, by modern skyscrapers, thus becoming increasingly unsuitable for living. Nowadays, most residents there are natives and migrant workers. This project is about how to design a desirable studio for dancers where they can live and work well. Service objects are divided into three categories in accordance with how close their connection with dancers’ home is, including strange visitors, regular visitors, and families. Since their demand for architectural functions differs greatly, the whole building is divided into several layers to satisfy various requirements. Moreover, as suggested by relevant on-site surveys, on both sides of the comparatively narrow street parked many private vehicles, which has further narrowed down the communication and activity space of residents. In other words, the weight of usage requirements is equal to that of residential demands. The major task: to restructure the original Quadrangle Courtyard, thus to create a satisfactory living and working atmosphere for dancers, and broaden the communication space along the street.

Project Location Located at a quadrangle courtyard at the East Street Forty-one in the Dongcheng District, Beijing, this old town is an important cultural heritage with a profound history. The fast development of Beijing has wiped away a large number of Hutong and quadrangle courtyards, which have been gradually replaced by high rises and other modern architectures.

Comparison Between Original And New Building
The original

The reconstructed
Reconstructed perimeter
The original architecture is similar to other buildings in height, or is even lower than the latter, which then made it difficult to stand out or broaden the view.
On both sides of the original street parked many vehicles, which blurred the division between lanes, sidewalk, or cycle ways, and narrowed the communication space for residents.
The restructured architecture featuring broad vision has left more space for dancers, while in the meantime serving as a landmark of Hutong.
The restructured building has a special public zone for communication where vehicles are kept away. Further, the zones for periodical activities such as dancing are available for local residents to change their simple lifestyle.

02 Recall The Lost Memory
Construction Of Countryside Public Zone Personal Work Project Location: Taizhou, China Tutor: Chi Zhang (E-mail: zc900424@gmail.com) GFA, Gross Floor Area: 842 ㎡ Every residential area has its own profound history. In the 20th century when economy and industry are prospering at a relatively high speed, the excessively fast development of urban area has gradually widened the gap between city and countryside. Hence, it has been the subject of many controversial voices that how to draw city residents back to the countryside, hereby to contribute to the growth of local economy while enjoying the slow-paced life themselves. Located in the Xianju County of Taizhou in Zhejiang Province, a place featuring its rough and stair-shaped terrain, cliffs and mountains, Gongyu village, sitting in a small basin, is surrounded by soaring mountains. Although praised as ‘Shangri-La’ in the East China, its complicated terrain has made it extraordinarily difficult to build any traffic facilities, so that people have to enter the village on foot. Therefore, most residents have moved to towns or cities, turning it an ‘empty village’. In the late 1990s, hikers found out the village by chance and then posted pictures of its beautiful scenery on the Internet, thus having introduced it to the public attention. However, the shabby accommodation and public facilities are still keeping visitors away. Main task of the project: to design a public space for residents and visitors, and a profit-oriented public space for villagers. The comfortable and simple environment will also, in the meantime, relieve the stress of hikers who live in the fast-paced urban area.
- 13 -
- 14 -
Project Location The village is in the middle of Zhejiang Province nearby the sea, with East China Sea in the east, Shaoxing and Ningbo in the north, Wenzhou in the south, and Jinhua and Lishui in the west.
Xianju County Topography: Located in the Southeast Zhejiang Province, Xianju County inclines from outside to inside, from the west to the east in terrain. Valleys and basins different in size are distributed proportionately.
Xianju County Topography
Xianju County Village Distribution: Xianju County is sparsely populated in villages, and has only 354 thousand permanent residents.

Section View The main architectural body is divided into three zones, which are the outdoor zone and the recreation zone on the first floor, and the shared kitchen and dining hall on the second. The outdoor space on the first floor is mainly for camping and campfire parties, while the indoor zone is for informal communication and recreational activities such as tasting the local waxberry wine. Those who pay a short visit to the village can also take a brief rest there. The dining hall and kitchen on the second floor serve mainly local residents and visitors. The first part is comprised of semi-outdoor cooking benches (lightened by the campfire on the balcony on the first floor) and dining hall, hereby to serve food prepared in a large canteen cauldron in the smallest space with the least resources. The other part is indoor public kitchen and dining hall where users can communicate with each other when cooking.

03 The Trials of Life
Sustainable Architectural Design Personal Work Project Location: Mumbai, India Tutor: Yue Guo (E-mail: yueg@mid-aa.com) GFA, Gross Floor Area: 8518 ㎥ Bombay, featuring the largest population in India, has attracted migrants from different parts of the country with its commercial opportunities and the comparatively high living standard. The fast development of urban area, however, has generated a series of social problems such as inequality and the wide gap between the rich and the poor. Worli koliwada in the South Bombay is a slum area that was not familiar to most people until 2009 when Worli Sealink was opened. Koli residents make the ends meet mainly by catching and selling fish, and they live on fish as well. The over simple and imbalanced diet has exposed the local to a series of illness. Hence, it has become a major concern that how to change their diet and thus to eliminate illness. Major task of the project: change the local diet from the root; increase the income of local residents and develop self-sufficient economy; solve illness issues resulting from the imbalanced diet.

History The earliest written records in Mumbai can be traced back to 250 BC. In the 3rd century BC, it was ruled by the emperor Ashoka, who believed in Buddhism. Later Hindu’s Hillhala rule ruled these islands until 1343 when they were annexed by the Muslim Gujarat Kingdom.

Development In 1534, Portugal got these islands. In 1661, Princess Catherine of Portugal married King Charles II of England, and these islands were given to the United Kingdom as dowry. In September 1668, the islands were subleased to the British East India Company.
In the 1980s, Mumbai's prosperity relied on textile mills and seaports, but the economy became diversified, and Mumbai's employees accounted for a large proportion of the workforce. Mumbai also has an unskilled and semi-skilled workforce.
- 27 -
With the influx of different classes of people, the gap between the rich and the poor is huge and the society is seriously divided. The residences of many citizens are extremely small. This has also led to the existence of many slums in Mumbai.
Background Worli Koliwada is one of the many slums in Mumbai. Worli Koliwada at the northern end of Worli is one of the first seven islands in Mumbai. The population is between 60,000 and 100,000.
The stratification of Indian society has led to the pattern of social spatial division, and the internal space of the community is not continuous. This social isolation is a clear separation between “Koli” and “Worli”.

Broccoli
Four layers of vegetable crops, such as pumpkin, tomato, broccoli and other crops. Pumpkin is a short-day plant with warm temperature and strong drought tolerance; tomato is a kind of vegetable that is warm, hi-light and water-loving; western blue flower grows strong, heat resistance and cold resistance are strong.
Eggplant
Three layers of vegetable crops, such as cabbage, bitter gourd, eggplant and other crops. The cabbage is warm and full of light; the bitter gourd originates from the tropics and is heat-resistant and not cold-resistant; the eggplant prefers high temperature, and under the conditions of long sunshine and high intensity, the eggplant is fertile.
Fifth floor Corn
The height of the five layers is higher than that of the other layers, so corn, rice, wheat and other crops are planted on this layer. Corn is a thermophilic crop, which requires a higher temperature during the whole growth period; rice is hot, humid, short-day, and the soil is not strict, using paddy soil; wheat long-day crop.

Indoor Perspective
The architecture is decorated mainly with light colors and different kinds of agricultural products. The space layout is rather simple and elegant. The lightwood colored planting shelf for cultivation is no more than 180 centimeters in height, which is to guarantee the maximum lighting and facilitate the irrigation of agricultural products. The LED light hidden inside the shelf can speed up the growth of crops. To echo the color of shelves, the floor tiles are grey and white, which is a relatively comfortable color match. In such an environment, it is no wonder that planters will devote themselves fully to their job.
- 35 -
Outdoor Perspective
The foldable window and door is the most special feature of the architecture. The open space means more possibilities, while in the meantime, suggesting that worli koliwada is a tolerant region that warmly welcomes visitors from every corner of the world. On each level of the building is a storeroom where planning machines can be kept in a satisfactory condition. To sit on the right side of the dining hall enables visitors to enjoy the best scenery. Public toilets are also available in the building, which is a solution to the problem that there is no bathroom nearby the sea.
