The guide provides details of major events on the district’s events calendar. It also highlights just some of the numerous fantastic places to visit, a selection of pubs and restaurants, as well as accommodation in the area.

However, you can find out much more at the Horsham Visitor Information Centre, located at Horsham Museum, located within one of the oldest town buildings along the historic Causeway.

The centre will help you discover Horsham town, where Sussex heritage combines with the cosmopolitan air created by

independent shops, outdoor cafes, pubs and restaurants along cobbled streets.

Part of the charm is generated by the largely pedestrianised centre, allowing a leisurely shopping and dining experience in a town renowned for its blooms and public art.

Swan Walk Shopping Centre is home to a wealth of high street names and a fine selection of independent quality brands, whilst the new John Lewis at Home and Waitrose store is a fine addition to the town.

The Shoppers Guide and Places to Eat Guide provides a detailed list of places to eat and drink, with over 90 bars, restaurants, cafes, pubs and coffee shops catering for every palette. The Visitor Information Centre and website also has information on hotels, bed and breakfasts, self-catering and campsite accommodation, as well as upcoming events,

information on villages, places to visit and things to do.

One of the best places to start is Horsham Museum and Art Gallery itself, celebrating 125 years this year.

With more than 26 galleries covering subjects from local trades to fashion, and prehistory to the poet Percy B. Shelley, the museum has been described as the “Victoria & Albert in miniature”. With ever-changing temporary exhibitions, award-winning gardens and 26 galleries, there is always something different to see. Highlights include an exhibit on dinosaurs, featuring the remains of the Great Horsham Iguanodon discovered by George Bax Holmes, a narwhal horn once thought to belong to a unicorn and mementoes from the time of the ‘Acid Bath Murderer’ John Haigh, who was held in a Horsham police cells.

Horsham Piazza Italia Friday Horsham Town Centre 10am - 4pm

Since 2007, the Easter weekend in Horsham town centre has been unique, thanks to the Piazza Italia festival.

Thousands of people flock to the market town to experience a powerful formula of supercars, themed entertainments and Italian food.

The first day of Piazza Italia includes the Italia in Piazza market, with delicacies from across Italy. The market is delivered in association with Giovanni’s, the team behind Panino café.

Organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and commercial/voluntary partners

There will be a Lamborghini display in the Carfax and, Ferraris in the Bishopric, with Minis at Parkside and Italian motorcycles in East Street. Other highlights of Good Friday include music from the Carfax Bandstand, street theatre, Pirelli’s F1 Simulator (part of the Kwik Fit Road safety Zone at Parkside) and Italian Job Mini’s promoting their 30th anniversary tour.

Horsham Easter Bunny Hunt Horsham Town Centre As part of Horsham’s Easter celebrations, town centre businesses will host a Bunny Hunt during the School Holidays from Good Friday 30 March until Sunday 15 April.

Accompanied pre-teenage children will be able to visit a range of Shops and draw ‘Find the Carrot’ cards to discover whether they have won a little

treat and then find which Bunny is hiding in that shop. The children will enter the bunny’s name on to a form with a chance to win prizes. Entry forms can be downloaded from the ‘Rotary Club of Horsham’ Facebook Page.

Horsham Contemporary Craft Show Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, RH12 1RL 10am - 5pm Designers and makers will be displaying a variety of beautifully made crafts, which have been created in workshops and studios across Sussex and the adjoining counties.

Come and meet designers with their ceramics, furniture, jewellery, metalwork, printmaking, textiles

and woodwork at Parkside (the joint offices of West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council). The pedestrian entrance is in Chart Way, off North Street, a short walk from the town centre.

Horsham Pancake Races Carfax, Horsham 12pm onwards Horsham businesses, charities and organisations, many wearing fancy dress, will compete in the rescheduled annual Horsham Rotary Charity Pancake Races.

Horsham English Festival

Day of Dance

Carfax and East Street, Horsham

Horsham Town Centre Various Times The English Festival celebrates all things English, with dance and music around the town, plus a medieval market with local food, drink and Sussex crafts.

Based around the well-established Day of Dance and organised by the local Broadwood Morris Men, the event attracts 20 or more ‘sides’ which display at locations across Horsham town. The teams mostly perform traditional Morris styles (Cotswold, North West and Border), plus step clog.

10am - 4pm A celebration of English traditions, featuring Horsham Folk Club Band and Singers, The Rocking Bankers (Horsham Folk Club’s very own Rock & Roll Band), Horsham Community Choir, Okee Dokee and the South Downs Folk Singers.

Storrington Duck Race

Storrington Village First Race: 12:30pm If you are looking for a “quackingly” good, fun-filled family day out, the duck races offers fun-fair rides, face-painting, craft stalls, music, bar, refreshments, ice-cream, cakes and a BBQ. Participants gather at the Riverside Walk and Library Car Park to race ducks and raise money for The Friends of Storrington First School (FOSS).

Barry Cryer and Colin Sell

Steyning Festival Various Locations in Steyning Amongst the headline acts of the festival a are Barry Cryer and Colin Sell, staples of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, legendary jazz bassist Herbie Flowers, Peep Show’s Robert Webb and Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B. Other well-known names include Baroness Floella Benjamin, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, children’s author Julia Donaldson, and Simon Nye, responsible for successful TV shows, most recently The Durrells.

The 16-day festival, with a theme of Revolution, includes a mix of music, drama, dance, art, poetry, literature, talks, walks and events.

There’s something for all ages, from a sing-along to Bugsy Malone

to the naughty and satirical Bounder and Cad. Live Lounge, the popular music event, celebrates its 10th anniversary, and there is also a wine and beer festival.

Andrew Coates looks for life on Mars, awardwinning journalist John Pilkington ponders

what’s next for Russia and Europe, consultant radiologist Malcolm Johnston explores the science of music, there’s a jamming session for ukuleles, and a specially commissioned piece by two dancers from Ballet Rambert.

And for literary buffs there’s a wealth of writing talent, including Salley Vickers, Sarah Dunant, Amanda Craig and Sarah Gristwood.

Simon Brett and Elly Griffiths are the judges at a Short Stories Awards Dinner, and Mark Billingham, Sarah Hilary, Erin Kelly and William Shaw make up an excellent crime writers’ panel. The Steyning Festival has something to whet every appetite.

Steyning Art Trail Various Locations Steyning Arts is an active group of local

artists, organising art trails and other art related events throughout the year.

About 50 artists will be involved in the art

trail, spread between about 18 venues. Artists that could be involved include Carol Wagstaff,

Kidstri Triathlon Pavillions Leisure Centre/ Horsham Park From 9am

The award-winning KidstriUK return to Horsham to stage the excellent triathlon, for children aged from 8-16.

The event welcomes those new to the sport as well as those that have previously taken part in triathlons, with categories for novices as well as TriStars.

There are trophies for the first three in each Tristar and Youth category, for males and females. There will be medals for all children taking part.

The events are very well organised, allowing for parents to watch children swim in The Pavilions before a bike ride and a run, all within Horsham Park.

Horsham Artist Open Studios Trail Venues across the District Various Times The Horsham Artist Open Studios (HAOS) Art Trail sees some of the best artists and makers in the area as they open their homes, studios, gardens and shared venues.

Tour the countryside from Ashington to Warnham, as well as venues across Horsham town,

enjoying the work of painters, jeweller makers, ceramic artists, sculptors and woodturners.

It is also your chance to talk to artists and see their work, gain an insight into their working practice and discuss the techniques used.

Cancer Research 5km Race for Life Horsham Park, North Street, RH12 2BP Starts: 11am The Race for Life sees thousands of women uniting with one purpose: To come together, to raise money, to bear cancer.

The five kilometre event in Horsham Park is an achievable distance for all ages and

abilities. You can run, jog or walk your way around the course. Competitors jogging typically complete the 5km course in about 30 to 45 minutes.

Walkers take about an hour, but there’s no

pressure to finish in a certain time.

Entry is £14.99, children £10 and Under 6 entry (Girls and boys) is free.

Fake Festival Horsham

The authentic France at Home market returns to Horsham. Traders sell local and regional cheeses, freshly-baked bread, patisserie products, olives and dried fruits, handbags, jewellery, provencal soaps and more.

A Makers' Market, organised by Food Rocks, adds to the fun along with some roaming gallic-themed entertainment.

12pm - 11pm After last year’s event at The Holbrook Club, the Fake Fest moves to Horsham Park (subject to planning approval) with six professional level tribute bands playing in a giant marquee.

The evening is headlined by Coldplay tribute Coldplace, whilst other acts

Horsham Garden Music Festival Human Nature Garden, Horsham Park

BLMRA 12-Hour Race Five Oaks, Billingshurst, RH14 9AE Race commences 8pm Fast, fun and furious, lawn mower racing is motorsport at its most eccentric. The British Lawn Mower Racing Association’s flagship event is held at Five Oaks, with many local entrants among the mowers lining up at 8pm for the night race.

Wisborough Green Balloon Festival Wisborough Green Village Green Time: TBC The annual hot-air balloon flights from Wisborough Green is one of the most visually stunning events on the local calendar.

It has been going for more than two decades, with about 25 balloons setting off with charitable donations from the public. The green of the village is used as the starting point of the flights, with money raised given to a designated local charity.

Horsham AmeriCARna Horsham Town Centre 10am - 3.30pm AmeriCARna will showcase American cars and bikes, supported by themed stalls and live entertainment.

The event aims to reflect the 50s and 60s, with live music starting at 11am. At last year’s inaugural event, almost 200 cars and bikes parked around the town, including NASCARS, Corvettes, Mustangs, Firebirds and Camaros, classic 50s and 60s cruisers, customs, Hot Rods, and Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The Carfax Bandstand hosts American inspired music and dance, assembled by Horsham Rocks. A fabulous selection of bands and solo artists are playing from 11am to 3pm, followed by a finale set.

The event has been made possible by collaboration between the council and commercial partners.

Horsham Town Centre Accompanied pre-teenage children are invited to visit participating shops, where they can select Halloween cards to discover whether they have won a treat or will have to perform a trick. Naturally the tricks are not too onerous.

Roosthole, accessed by car from Hammerpond Road, is also a popular starting point for walkers and for a 16-mile forest ride. Some of the most scenic spots are the less visited areas around Colgate, with The Dragon pub a good starting point. White deer are regularly spotted in this part of the forest.

Woods Mill Woods Mill, Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9SD https://sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/ Woods Mill is the headquarters of Sussex Wildlife Trust and an environmental education centre.

Visitors can walk past old ponds and through the ancient woodland, alongside streams and waterways, all contained within its 47 acres. This habitat attracts an impressive number of species including mammals, insects, amphibians and birds.

Woods Mill Nature Reserve hosts a number of events for young children throughout the year. There is no charge but donations are welcome.

Southwater Country Park Cripplegate Lane, Southwater West Sussex, RH13 9UN This 90 acre site, created from a former brickworks, offers outdoor activities including an adventure-style play area, orienteering, canoeing and sailing.

The park also includes a beautiful wildlife area 'The Quarry', supporting lizards, kingfishers, nightingales and various butterflies and dragonflies.

However, it is most loved by children for its Dinosaur Island adventure play area, with aerial walkways, jungle swings and a climbing volcano, all set within a prehistoric swamp landscape.

by Horsham District Council, was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1988. It includes a 17 acre millpond, marshes, grassland, reed beds, hedges and woodlands.

The site provides a haven for a variety of wildlife with over 400 species of

plants and 100 species of bird, including a thriving heronry, wildfowl and all three species of woodpecker. There is a feeding station which attracts a wide variety of birds, mammals and insects.

Open March - October from 10am to 6pm. Admission costs £2 and is free for under 16’s.

The Wildland Project is a pioneering experiment in habitat creation, the largest of its kind in lowland Europe. Knepp is now a hotspot for nightingales, cuckoos, turtle doves and purple emperor butterflies, to name a few. It also has herds of wild ponies, cattle, deer and pigs.

The South Downs Way is a long distance footpath in Southern England and is one of Britain's National Trails.

It runs for around 100 miles from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in Sussex, with a small loop around Eastbourne. The South Downs Way pases through the South Downs a beautiful area, which may soon become a National Park.

The majority of the path is a bridleway and so can be used by horseriders and cyclists too.

Some of the most beautiful parts of the Way head through the Horsham District. The 7.5 mile walk from the village of Washington to Upper Beeding takes passes Chanctonbury Ring and Steyning Ring.

It also offers fantastic views over Steyning to the North and the coast near Shorehamon-Sea to the south.

Despite the picture (taken by Toby Phillips on a particularly gloomy day!) it’s a beautiful walk!

In 2018, the museum is celebrating 40 years. Dedicated to the industrial heritage of the South East, exhibits include a narrow-gauge railway and bus service (both provide free nostalgic travel around the site), Connected Earth Telecommunications Hall, Milne Electricity Hall, Printing Workshop and much more.

The Museum is also home to traditional craftspeople, such as the blacksmith and potter. We aim to have at least three crafts demonstrated every day.
