The Weather Can’t Make its Mind Up

Grandma’s Big Day Out in Slippers I turn 40 next year. I know that as I’m contemplating buying a convertible and hiring a young secretary.

Yet remarkably, all four of my grandparents are still going strong. Both my parents were teenagers when I was born.

Prior to then, they both owned an exuberantly-painted Ford RS2000 Mark 1, which they’d cruise around Horsham in. By the time they were 21, they’d been traded in for a Morris Marina Estate as they had three children.

Consequently, my parents needed the support of my grandparents and I’ve always been proud of my close family.

For my maternal grandma, the last couple of years have been difficult. First, she lost her driving licence on the doctor’s advice.

This was probably for the best, given the number of dents and scratches that she couldn’t explain. But nonetheless, it was a blow to her independence.

Then, she had to move into a local care home. Despite the friendly support offered, my grandma is lonely.

She goes through her phone book (she’s of that generation that took the number of everyone they ever met and now just crosses out the names of those who have either changed number or died) and dials numbers until someone answers.

Her memory is waning and she’s not always sure who she’s called or why she’s calling them and clearly finds this frustrating.

I receive several calls from her each day, as does my dad at his work in Storrington, and my mother-in-law, who she hardly knows but my father-in-law is a domestic appliance engineer who once fixed her washing machine and left his number!

Sometimes, grandma will realise you’re busy and cut the call short.

“Just wanted to hear your voice, but I’ve done that now!”

But on one occasion this month, she sounded really down. “Thank

God!” she said when I answered.

“I was just about ready to shoot myself!”

It was close to my print deadline, so I was really busy, but seeing as she sounded so fed up, I promised her that I’d pop in for a quick coffee. I could refill the AAH stand at the leisure centre nearby while I’m there, I thought, a touch selfishly.

When I arrived at my grandma’s, I peered through the window and she looked miserable, crouched over the phone on her old writing desk. I wondered why she wasn’t downstairs with the group of women chatting in the lounge, but she later informed me that “they’re all the oldies!” It might be that grandma doesn’t always

remember how old she is now.

But upon seeing me, her face lit up. She was beaming as she shuffled over to me in slippers and violet-coloured velvet trousers. They’re like something off Soul Train in the 1970s.

She’d completely forgotten about our call earlier in the day. “I hoped and prayed somebody would take me out of here and here you are, my angel!”

In all honesty, it was a pain in the arse as I really couldn’t spare the time, but I didn’t have the heart to let her down.

“I guess we’re busting out!”

So, grandma clambered into my work van and we went on a big day out.

For me, it was just a few errands. I

popped into Crates as they needed some more copies of the AAH Events guide. Grandma had a chat to owners Marion and PJ about her slippers.

I topped up the AAH stand at Henry Adams and told her to wait on the bench outside as they’re very busy people, but she didn’t bloody listen and waltzed in anyway, announcing that “the weather can’t make its mind up!”

We bumped into a friend of mine, picking up suits at Moss Bros for his wedding. He squeezed in next to grandma and we gave him a lift back to his home on the new estate in Broadbridge Heath. She chatted about the development being built in Loxwood, where she used to live.

“There’s 4,000 of them going up and it’s only a small village!” she mourned. Matt sympathised gamely, although it’s only 17 houses going up.

We then pulled up outside my house, where she declared, “This is where Ben lives!”

Who did she think had been driving her around all day?

Grandma sat down for a coffee with my wife and after a minute, started crying. She said the day had been brilliant and just to be out helping me, seeing people going about their business and chatting to them had been amazing.

“I have to keep pinching myself to check that I’m not dreaming.”

She waltzed back into the care home beaming, sure that every other resident would be talking about her wild adventure. And I drove away feeling I’d had a pretty good day too.

It turns out, I could spare the time after all.

I don’t know how many readers might have a relative in a similar situation to my grandma. But if you do, just pop in from time to time, if you don’t already.

We’re all going to be old one day and when we are, we’ll all say daft things, we’ll all be forgetful and we’ll all just want the chance to feel normal again.

Despite regularly advertising Tudor and Rolex watches in AAH, this is the first time the shop has been extensively featured in the magazine. However, we did run a small editorial in 2012 on the launch of the Rolex range. Our Business feature in this edition is more comprehensive, covering the incredible history of Wakefields, dating back to 1911.

For the cover photo, Toby set up a studio light in the centre of the shop, using the Rolex sales area as a backdrop for the portrait. Another picture of the owners standing up (without chairs) was the editor’s preferred choice, but Toby liked the composition of this image, so it got the nod!

Other contenders for the cover included triathlon champion Issy Hayes, harmonica player Terry Potter and Martine Ayling of New Street Butchers.

are looking for 1,000 - 1,500 sq ft of space (preferably level access) close to Horsham town centre, with access to toilet facilities.

The foodbank in Horsham currently distributes around 14,000 meals a year through referrals from various agencies including Citizens Advice, social services and other support services, schools and churches.

The foodbank centres and the warehouse where the food is sorted and stored are staffed entirely by volunteers.

The Southern Co-op has agreed to trial Silly Moo cider, produced by Trenchmore, a small family farm on the edge of Partridge Green and Cowfold. The farm, which has over 19 varieties of traditional cider apples in their orchard of over 1,400 trees, uses only fresh apple juice and in 2017 was named Farmers of the Year at the Sussex Food and Drink Awards.

The Horsham District Foodbank could close unless it can find a new premises to store supplies.

The foodbank was established four years ago by community charity Horsham Matters, in partnership with The Trussell Trust. It provides parcels with three days of emergency food for local people in crisis.

Last month, the donated food on which the foodbank relies had to be moved out of the warehouse space at the back of the Horsham Matters premises in East Street. It is currently housed temporarily in other local premises but will need to be moved again soon.

The Sussex Guild Contemporary Craft Show will be held at Parham House & Gardens on 16 – 17 June, from 10:30am - 5pm.

The Guild is a group of professional designer makers selected for their high degree of skill and creativity. The Guild’s craft show takes place in a large marquee within the award-winning gardens, with spectacular examples of ceramics, leather, textiles, jewellery, wood, glass, metalwork and modern furniture on show and craft demonstrations too.

Visitors will be able to meet the makers and buy or commission an individual piece.

Coolham Live Music Club hosts its fifth anniversary gig on Saturday 13 October. The club has hosted some of the best artists and bands in the country, performing blues, jazz, soul, Americana and more. The club has raised almost £8,000 for Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice in the process.

October’s line-up will include Elles Bailey (with guitarists Joe Wilkins and Will Edmunds), Dave Ital (who has played for the likes of Beyonce, Tom Jones, Nile Rodgers and Craig David), with his Rhythm and Blues Band,

and London-based soul songstress Georgia Van Etten, who proved a huge hit on her previous visit to Coolham.

The award-winning KidstriUK returns to Horsham to stage the excellent triathlon in Horsham Park on 17 June, for children aged from 8-16.

The event, Organised by Hedgehogtri and Kidstri Events, welcomes those new to the sport as well as those that have previously taken part in triathlons, with categories for novices as well as TriStars. There are trophies for the first three in each Tristar and Youth category, for males and

females. There will be medals for all children taking part.

The events are very well organised, allowing for parents to watch children swim at The Pavilions before a bike ride and a run within Horsham Park.

The League of Friends of Horsham Hospital hosts its Summer Fete at the hospital on Saturday 19 May, from 1 – 4pm.

another school earlier in his career. As well as sharing stories about his life as a comedian, Romesh spoke about the importance of following your dreams and about learning by failing. There’s a brilliant line-up of events at the Steyning Festival, which begins on Saturday 26 May. Among the big names are Barry Cryer, Robert Webb (Peep Show/Back), John Torode of Masterchef, Julia Donaldson (Room on the Broom/The Stick Man), Sir Malcolm Rifkind, Dame Floella Benjamin and Simon Nye, writer of the popular TV series, The Durrells.

There are many events for children in mind, including opportunities to meet the Gruffalo and its creator, and a chance to work on a giant mural under the expert guidance of children’s

author and illustrator, Nick Sharratt.

For music lovers, one of the highlights must surely be a concert featuring Leonard Bernstein’s setting of the Chichester Psalms and a newly commissioned work by Malcolm Singer. PCaSO (Prostate Cancer and Support Organisation) supported by Mark Masonry of Sussex, are offering an afternoon of FREE PSA Tests.

PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen; it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer, although a raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem. The free PSA testing will be at The Normandy Masonic Centre, Denne Road, Horsham, RH12 1JF on Saturday 23 June. The testing will be conducted by trained personnel and phlebotomy nurses.

NEWS ROUND-UP Horsham Museum & Art Gallery presents Averting a Catastrophe – The Kosovo Crisis through an Artist Eyes by Gordon Rushmer, on 1 June – 28 July. Filled with powerful, moving and richly detailed portraits of everyday life in a war-torn country, this exhibition by the renowned war artist celebrates the remarkable achievement of British and NATO troops in keeping the peace in Kosovo twenty years ago. The HAOS (Horsham Artist Open Studios) Art Trail takes place on 9/10 and 16/17 June.

This is an opportunity to spend up to four days touring the countryside, from Ashington to Warnham, as well as venues across Horsham town, enjoying the work of some of the best artists and makers in the area as they open their homes, studios, gardens and shared

venues. It is also a chance to talk to the artists and gain an insight into an artist’s working practice and discuss the techniques used in their creative process.

NEWS ROUND-UP The Knepp Castle Carriage Drive was held on Sunday 8 April. Fifteen beautiful carriages with immaculately turned out horses met at the castle before navigating a 10-mile rural route, taking in pubs including The George & Dragon at Dragons Green, The Countryman at Shipley and The Crown at Dial Post. The drive, which included carriages from Joanne and Michael Hartland from Maplehurst, Bob Alexander from Ifield Wood, Nigel Boardman from Ockley, Ben and David Turner from Capel and James Hyatt from Bolney, raised over £800 for St Catherine’s Hospice.

Geoffrey Enticott will be talking to the Horsham Museum Society about pot lids Wednesday 13 June.

Geoff will focus on Victorian Pratt Pot Lids produced in the second half of the 19th century, when a new underglaze printing process enabled coloured pictures to be printed on the lids. The lids feature a wide range of themes including Shakespeare, the Crimean War, dogs and old English pastimes.

RunWisborough will be held on Sunday 13 May, at 10:30am. The event, now in its third year and with a new sponsor in Christ’s Hospital, is hoping to attract 1,000 participants. The 5km and 10km race is for serious runners and people of all abilities and there is also a Colour Run on the Green for youngsters. Runners will be timechipped with prizes in all categories with medals. Sussex band The Blues Issue will lead the post-race entertainment. The Horsham 10K race takes place on Sunday 20 May, starting and finishing at Horsham Rugby Club. There will be 500 competitors running on a mixed terrain course. This popular event is part of the Sussex Grand Prix and attracts competitors from clubs all over West Sussex and East Sussex.

TERRY POTTER, 82, HORSHAM

I was born on 25 October 1935 and lived in Trafalgar Road until the house burned down! We moved to Rushams Road with my grandparents and I remember driving a pedal car down the road when I was little.

We moved to Clarence Road and I attended the infant school at the bottom of the road, before heading to Victory Road School, which had been rebuilt after a fire.

At the Rushams Road allotments, kids would hunt around for shrapnel from the bombs dropped during the war.

Occasionally, we’d even find plane parts.

“No one plays my style of harmonica. You hear people playing in the blue style, but I play traditional folk.”

When the air sirens sounded, we would all hide under the table or stairs. Once, a bomb fell on houses in Orchard Road and it blew the glass out of our windows too!

There was a baby who miraculously survived in the house that was hit, and I met her 70 years later at a Memorial Concert in Horsham.

I went to Collyer’s Grammar School. I started off in the A form, but it was all downhill from there. I struggled with French and slipped down. I was happier taking extra science classes instead, messing

about with Bunsen burners. Our teacher had a tin leg, having lost his leg in The Great War. He used to say: ‘You can kick it as hard as you like but I won't feel it!’

I loved music from a young age. My dad, Charlie, played the harmonica and mum sang and played violin. I was eight when I joined the choir at St Mary’s Parish Church.

The choirmaster was Mr Hodgson, who also taught at Collyer’s. My dad taught me the harmonica and I would play it and sing popular songs on coach outings down to the coast.

Cricket was my game and I played it for many years. I couldn’t hit the ball initially, but dad took me over Horsham Park, gave me good advice, and I improved. He would place a thrupenny bit on the stumps and if I could bowl him out then I could keep it.

Whenever he would come to watch me play for Collyer’s, I would always get nervous and play badly. Still, I hit some good innings and could bowl a bit too.

Once, we took on a Sussex team featuring George Cox, who lived in Warnham. He was also a fine footballer and played for Arsenal.

“We’d been busking in Leicester Square during the preview night for the Ned Kelly film, starring Mick Jagger. Someone heard us play and invited us to appear on TV.”

My first job was at Metal Box in Crawley, but soon after starting I signed up for National Service.

Having passed health checks at Newhaven, I became a medical orderly. We would be woken up at 5am and be out parading in the snow before breakfast! They shouted terrible things at us but after a few weeks, we were more confident. When the next batch of new recruits arrived, you’d laugh as you knew they’d have to go to the barbers. They’d walk in with long hair and come out looking like convicts!

Having been assigned to RAF Waterbeach in Cambridge, I was on duty when a new Supermarine Swift exploded. I had to go and

find what was left of the crew. I found a hand, which made my stomach turn. Another Swift overshot the runway and crashed, leaving the pilot with a badly wounded leg. There were fears he might bleed to death and I had to help the medical team sew up his leg, which probably saved his life.

I enjoyed national service as I still played music and cricket too. I was posted to Germany, as like a twit I signed on for three years to earn extra money. I used to send my wages home, because there was still rationing and times were tough for everybody. I was de-mobbed on 31 December 1956. When I arrived back in Horsham, nobody was home as

my parents had gone out to a dance in Barns Green.

I wanted to go back to Metal Box, but they’d trained another apprentice so I had to wait a year before returning. In the meantime, I worked at Warnham Gardens, cycling there every day to work outside and drive tractors around.

My parents loved square dancing and formed a small club at the Free Christian Hall on Worthing Road. They would play records, learn to dance and occasionally book a professional band. One night, they invited The Benacre Band, comprised of three ladies who took folk music around Sussex. They played traditional

songs like ‘She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain.’ One day, I joined them on my harmonica.

They then invited me to perform at a May Day festival and that was how I gained the confidence to play live.

In 1957, I played my first ever proper concert at the Capitol, then known as the flea pit. I played ‘Blue Bell Polka’ on the harmonica with my friend Geoff Hedger on piano. We couldn’t see each other as he was in the pit, so had to play telepathically!

After the concert, an accordionist called Derrick Smith asked if we wanted to form a band. A good friend called Tony Wales came along with his snare drum and we formed The Derrydowners. We

MY LIFE SO FAR played at a barn dance soon after and attracted other musicians including banjo player George Whetton and guitarist Lionel Bounton.

I have always played the harmonica upside down, in the same way as my dad. It doesn't matter to me as I could never read music; I’ve always played by sound. You don’t hear the harmonica much as a lead instrument. Bob Dylan played it sometimes, but not properly.

There’s no comparison. I would lead the tune for the other musicians to follow. No one

plays my style of harmonica.

You hear some playing in the blues style, but I play traditional folk.

Tony and I were founder members of a folk club in Horsham in 1958, called Horsham Songswappers. We’d meet at Albion Hall, which has since been demolished. The club gave everyone a chance to perform. I started playing a few songs on guitar there. We attracted folk singers from all over, as there were very few venues around. Whilst the club came to an end, Horsham Folk

Club emerged from it and continues very successfully to this day.

We were a close knit group on the folk scene. I met musicians Paul Morris (guitar/banjo) and Mike Howley (accordion) and played with them at The Troubadour in London. It was there that I heard artists like Long John Baldry, Red Sullivan and Rambling Jack Elliott, who would wear a huge Stetson hat.

“You wouldn't think that a harmonica would help you to meet so many people.” Terry Potter at the Albert Hall Festival in 1958, and my own band performed everywhere. Other bands I played in included the Pandemonium String Band and Country Cousins, with my wife Margaret once playing on the washboard. We also liked to dabble in skiffle music with Ian Holder playing the piano. We were one of the first bands to play that kind of music, certainly in Horsham.

I met Margaret in West Green, Crawley, where I was playing in a dance hall. I liked the look of this lady and asked my dad to find out a bit about her. I sent him in to do the dirty work! Finally, I plucked up the courage to ask her out. Margaret travelled to Horsham by train and I met her at the station. We wanted to watch a Frank Sinatra film at The Odeon, but it was sold out. So, we went to The Ritz to see The Dock Brief, starring Richard

Attenborough. We didn’t enjoy it so started talking, until somebody told us to be quiet. I saw Margaret back on the train.

We married in 1963.

Throughout the 1960s, I would collect folk albums. We went to Ireland, playing at the Ceilidh, jazz and blues clubs in Dublin and down to the Wicklow Mountains in Glendalough. Tony Wales was a great collector of folk music and books about the Sussex way of life. My parents, Charlie and Marjorie, would also collect folk songs and recorded lyrics. Their original songbook was presented to Horsham Museum shortly after my dad passed away. It can still be viewed in the museum’s library.

Perhaps the best band I played in was Etchingham Steam Band in 1974 – 76, with Ashley Collins, who also played in renowned bands Fairport Convention and

Steeleye Span. I met Ashley whilst recording the Complete Dancing Master at Sound Technique Records in 1972. We recorded an album of traditional songs with well-known folk musicians including Willie Rushton and Shirley Collins, who was England's leading folk singer.

Ashley and Shirley founded the band.

I joined along with my cousin, Ian Holder, who I’ve played alongside for 50 years. On Adieu to Old England, we performed an instrumental dance tune, ‘Portsmouth’ and I accompanied Shirley on The Chiner’s Song.

We would travel all over the country, sleeping on floors. Whether we were paid depended on how many people turned up. Several guest performers played with us during that time, including Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention) and Peter Knight (Steeleye Span). The other three went full-time, but I couldn't as I had a job.

If they had stuck to playing locally, I would have stayed, but they went on a tour of Europe. I was made to feel like I was letting people down by leaving, but I just couldn't keep it going.

In terms of regular work, I had many jobs after leaving Metal Box. I worked as a statistician at ThornEricsson on Foundry Lane, I was a bursar at Forest Boys School in the days of Frank Newby, worked in the dispatch department at Ciba-Geigy, was an administrator at the tax office and I also worked at Sun Alliance for a time. I've been a jack of all trades, but my heart has always been in music.

In 1970, we appeared on BBC2 for a programme about Ned Kelly. We’d been busking in Leicester Square during the preview night for the Ned Kelly film, starring Mick Jagger. We happened to have recorded songs about the outlaw and sang them until the police moved us on. But someone heard us play and invited us to record on a late-night show at Shepherd's Bush. Whilst there, we met Joan Bakewell, John Cleese and Raymond Burr. We were chauffeured home and that ride cost me my last 10 shillings!

I was working at Sun Alliance and a few people at work saw it on TV. They didn't have a clue that I played in a band, even though I had long hair and wore flowery shirts. You had to project the right image.

In 1974, I played four tracks with the Steam Band on John Peel’s BBC Radio 2 show. Over the years, music gave me many memorable moments. You wouldn't think that a harmonica would take you all over the country and help you to meet so many people.

I played with countless other bands including the Country Players, No Man’s Band and Potter’s Wheel. In 1977, we went on tour to Sweden with Potter’s Wheel, playing in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Copenhagen (Denmark). We even took a trip to the studios where ABBA recorded. That was one of the few times I ever made good money through music.

Folk music is not usually a moneymaking concern, but if you reach the top, you can make a living of sorts. I’m very proud to have so many recordings, particularly from the 1960s, when I still had my voice.

I play folk music for the heart. I still get nervous every time I start playing or singing and there are still songs that make me emotional. My mum used to sing The Bailiff’s Daughter and even when I sing it now, it makes me cry.

CROWN FOR A CENTURY The Story of Wakefields

There are some watches so lavishly decorated that they command extraordinary sums of money.

There’s the extravagant Hublot Big Bang, which contains more than 1,280 diamonds and counts musician Jay-Z among its owners.

The other-worldly Louis Moinet Meteoris reputedly contains fragments from an asteroid, a meteorite, the moon and Mars, while the Patek Philippe 1928 Single Button Chronograph is embellished with 28 different jewels.

But for generations, one watch maker has been more revered around the world than others: Rolex. Its status was proven once again in 2017, when Paul Newman’s engraved Rolex ‘Daytona’ became the most expensive wristwatch in history, going under the hammer for $17,752,500.

The sale owed more to the enduring prestige of the brand and the iconic perception of the Hollywood actor than it did the value of the watch’s decoration.

Put simply, there’s nothing quite like a Rolex.

When the Swiss watch maker was looking for an official partner retailer in Horsham, Rolex fittingly opted for a business that had also been in existence for

more than a century and has a comparable reputation, albeit on a more local scale.

Wakefields is a name synonymous with Horsham, having been founded in 1911, six years after Hans Wildorf and Alfred Davis founded Rolex in London.

For Wakefields, it was a pivotal moment in the history of the West Street shop. Having first opened its doors the year before the Titanic set off on its doomed maiden voyage, the jewellers has seen countless changes. Yet it remains a family-run business, owned and managed by the great-grandchildren of its founder.

Melanie Wakefield, who runs the business alongside brother Dominic, looks back at its origins and explains why Wakefields has survived two world wars, eight recessions and 20 different British prime ministers.

Riding into Town John Wakefield, Melanie’s great-grandfather, is said to have ridden into Horsham on a Penny Farthing in about 1890, with five pounds in his pocket.

He found work as one of five watchmakers in the basement at Jury Cramp’s shop on West Street, eventually advancing to senior watchmaker. He married Sarah, who was working at the

sweet shop at 59 West Street, buying the shop when the owner, Mrs Jupp, retired.

John opportunistically bought the butcher’s shop next door too, making an offer while the owner was suitably inebriated, and turned it in to a gentleman’s outfitters, which also survives to this day.

Melanie said: “John opened the jewellers in direct competition to Cramp’s, so they fell out.

Initially, Wakefields was located in the alleyway that now runs alongside Costa. As well as watches, clocks and jewellery, the shop included an optician service and sold all manner of gifts and oddities, from silver cutlery sets to barometers.

During The Great War, munitions shells were made there, with women employed to polish shell cartridges. The shop then moved to its current location at Number 11 in 1935.”

Café Culture The Wakefields dominated Horsham town for decades.

In addition to the sweet shop, outfitters and jewellers, the family ran a China shop in East Street. Wakefields also operated a huge café, running from the current Clarks shoe shop unit, all along the first floor to the current Wakefields jewellers site.

The cafe offered shoppers a chance to relax, eat and drink. It also catered for wealthy clients at private residences, including the Queen at Windsor, and was among the country’s largest importers of Mumm Champagne.

Jim Wakefield took over from his father at the jewellery shop and gained a reputation as being a stickler when it came to maintaining high standards.

During a failed robbery, someone tried to escape by jumping through the glass at the front of the shop!

Customers could even smoke in the shop, using crystal ashtrays.

Graham Wakefield, Melanie’s father, joined in the mid-1960s, working alongside Jim for many years.

Melanie said: “When my dad started out, he was still having to go to homes and cut rings from the fingers of people who had died, as the family wanted to retrieve the jewellery.

“He faced some scary situations in his years here, including being pistol whipped. During another failed robbery, someone tried to escape the police by jumping through the glass at the front of the shop!”

Jewellers Endures Gradually, the other Wakefields businesses fell by the wayside.

Changing fashions for dining out meant that the café’s popularity waned in the 1970s.

Others closed as relatives wanted to pursue careers away from the High Street. The gentleman’s outfitters was bought about 25 years ago, although it retained the Wakefields name and survives to this day.

Award-Winning Farm Shop New House Farm Shop and Tea Room is located in a beautifully renovated 16th Century barn, hidden in a quiet spot on the edge of Horsham. People come from all over to enjoy our cafe and locally sourced produce.

Melanie began working alongside her father and grandfather whilst still a schoolgirl in 1984, before joining the business properly four years later.

Whilst not much has changed on the outside – the restored clock over the shop is still a reliable time check – a willingness to evolve and introduce new brands has ensured continued success.

Melanie said: “We’ve always been passionate about people and our products. We’re always looking forward and not back, and that's why we’ve survived.

“We have new designers coming in soon, including Rachel Galley and One More from Belgium, as we’re always searching for high quality new designers.

“We know it’s important to have entry-level fashion items alongside more prestigious brands, for our jewellery range and our watches.

“We’ve introduced brands to attract a younger clientele, including Daisy and Links of London. When we sold Pandora, footfall went through the roof. We passed on the opportunity to continue selling Pandora as we’re now appealing to a different clientele by working with Rolex.”

Archers Time Becoming an official Rolex retail partner was a defining moment in the shop’s history. It was only achieved after an arduous bidding process.

Ultimately, it was the commitment to customer service that impress Rolex, with the first watches arriving in 2012.

Whilst some of the more historical aspects of the store remain, including cabinets that were part of the Boots that the jewellery shop replaced, Wakefields was extensively refitted to accommodate the new brand. Staff are also required to complete a two-day course at the Rolex service centre, where they learn how to handle and present the watches.

Melanie said: “It’s an amazing place; like a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for watches,

“The Rolex factory is like a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for watches and the makers are the Oompa Loompas.” and the makers are the Oompa Loompas. They service the watches in absolute silence, as they’re working on intricate components. They wear eye glasses with various magnifying loops, so it’s fascinating to see them work. Some listen to Radio 4 through headphones and their feet start tapping when they hear the music to The Archers being played. The whole place emits the great heritage and history of Rolex and it’s obvious everyone is proud to be a part of it.”

Second-Hand Boom As well as offering new Rolex watches, including Submariner,

Lady-Datejust, Cosmograph Daytona, Oyster Perpetual and Yacht-Master, Wakefields offers pre-owned watches.

Melanie said: “Pre-owned items come in and go out very quickly, as there’s huge demand. It’s the biggest growth sector in our industry, as people are investing in watches in the same way they invest in art.

“Some can be worth double what they were bought for originally. The Daytona, for example, is highly sought-after.

“People didn’t used to hang on to a good watch because they didn't appreciate how valuable they would become. So, those that remain in good condition are in demand. We recently had

a customer come in with a ‘Double Red’ Sea-Dweller Submariner, which wasn’t in the best condition, but it re-sold within minutes.

“We are still learning about old models and need to research those that come in, as their value varies greatly. We always need to ensure that all the parts are genuine, because in the past some Rolex watches were fixed with non-genuine parts.

“Styles come in and out of fashion too. The new grey dial models have been hugely popular, but fashions change and the watch industry moves with it.

“In the UK, we’ve traditionally bought items to last forever, so watches have never really been considered as a fashion accessory. But they are. The millennial generation are more appreciative of that. They are grasping that not only is Rolex iconic, but the new models reflect changing styles.”

Tudor Resurgence However, not everyone has yet caught on to Tudor, despite the company being created alongside Rolex back in 1926 by Hans Wildorf.

Tudor watches were created as a more affordable alternative to Rolex. However, because of the skill of the watchmakers, Tudor became renowned for creating superb tool watches, with professional divers and military personnel often using them.

The Story of Paul Newman’s Daytona A Rolex Cosmograph Daytona once owned by the actor Paul Newman sold for $17.8m in 2017.

The watch was a gift by his wife, Joanne, who bought it from Tiffany & Co in New York and had it engraved with the message “Drive Carefully.” At the time, Newman was a motor racer.

The Daytona wasn’t a popular model but grew in provenance and eventually became known as ‘The Paul Newman.’

Newman gave his watch to his daughter’s then boyfriend, James Cox, in 1984. Even when Cox and Nell Newman separated, they remained on good terms and jointly sold the watch at auction.

It was expected to fetch about $1million but made global headlines when it sold for a record figure. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Nell Newman Foundation and the Newman’s Own Foundation.

The brand was relaunched in 2009 with new models including the Grantour Chronograph and the Heritage Chrono, inspired by the Montecarlo from the 1970s.

Melanie said: “You cannot buy a watch as complicated as Tudor for the same price. They are just amazing.

“From a sales perspective, they’re a slow burner, particularly in the UK where the brand is perhaps perceived as a poor man’s Rolex. But that’s not the case.”

“I know the shop is intimidating to some,” confessed Melanie.

“We used to have an open-door policy, but we’re not able to do

that now. We ensure the staff on the door are friendly, but I appreciate that it’s a barrier some people don’t want to go through.

Sometimes, people come in and apologise for what they're wearing, which we don’t want. I couldn’t care less what people are wearing!

“When you stop to look around the shop, there’s an informal atmosphere. It’s bright, there’s music playing and the staff are warm and friendly.

“We want to appeal to everyone, but we appreciate that’s difficult.

We don’t want people to perceive us as a snobby jewellery shop, as we’re not. We sell watch straps, children's earrings and small gifts for teachers or friends from just a few pounds.

“We offer ear piercings, engraving, re-threading and we have an extensive repair service, as we have done since the store first opened in 1911.

“We’re still a shop that serves the whole community and we hope that’ll continue for many more years to come.”

TRI, TRI AGAIN! So, who’s this then?

This is 14-year-old Isabella Hayes, or Issy for short, one of the brightest triathlon prospects in the country.

Remind me what happens in a triathlon?

It’s a three-tiered event involving swimming, cycling and running.

Team GB has enjoyed great success in the sport, thanks to Alastair and Jonathan Brownlee.

Issy also enjoys the biathlon, which removes the cycling element.

So, how do you find out if you’re good at the triathlon?

We’re fortunate in these parts as a company called Hedgehogtri organises popular junior triathlons locally. One such event is held at The Pavilions and Horsham Park every summer. Issy still likes to compete in this as she lives in the town. However, her first attempt was at the Crowborough race.

Issy recalls: “My parents bought me a tight triathlon T-shirt and it took forever to get into during the transition from the pool, as I was still wet. As I was competing in the novice category, I only swam one length of the pool, then spent ages trying to get changed!”

I guess she improved quickly?

Having enjoyed the experience, Issy started competing in more triathlons. Once she’d mastered the transition, she progressed to the Tristar category, competing over greater distances and beating competitors associated to triathlon clubs.

Aren’t these local events all about the bicycle you have?

In the novice category at triathlons like the one in Horsham, you see all sorts of bicycles, including BMX bikes.

Last year, I saw one bike with pink ribbons on it!

Which is wonderful as it’s all about development and having fun. At the Tristar level, most competitors tend to have a lightweight bike with a carbon frame, suitable for the conditions.

From Hedgehogtri events, Issy targeted the South East Junior Series, run by British Triathlon.

Further success led to national and international events.

How successful are we talking?

Two years ago, whilst a pupil at Farlington School (she now attends Reigate Grammar) Issy was entered in to a qualifying event for the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships,

Issy said: “I finished seventh and that was the point that I started to think I could compete with the best. Then, last year, I returned and won the event.”

Wow! Just her day, was it?

Well, to prove it wasn’t a fluke, Issy successfully defended her title in the snow at Crystal Palace just a few weeks ago. She said: “I wanted to defend my title, especially for John le Rossignol and all of the others involved with Set4Success.”

What is Set4Success?

A local charity which supports talented young sportspeople across the Horsham district. Issy was recently awarded the Neilcott Trophy by Set4Success.

It’s given for the person demonstrating the highest achievement in their chosen field. Issy also won gold at the world’s largest junior triathlon, held at Hever Castle in Kent, and has twice represented Great Britain at World Championship events. In Florida in 2016, Issy finished eighth in the individual event and claimed a bronze in the relay for Team GB. The local triathlons have proved to be a springboard then?

Indeed. Success there could even lead to national selection.

Issy entered the Billingshurst Kidstri last year to gain points for qualification. As well as winning the girls’ section, she finished three minutes ahead of the first boy in her age category.

Issy said: “The Hedgehogtri events have really helped me progress. There are a few

promising athletes who all started out there.”

Is Issy strong across the board?

That appears to be the case.

Athletes who are very good at all three disciplines tend to triumph over those who are excellent at one and average at the other two.

Issy said: “I often see people who are fantastic swimmers that have vanished by the end and great runners who give themselves too much to do. Development coaches need to see that you can run and swim. If you can do that, you have the stamina to ride a bike as they can teach you how to improve your techniques and develop drafting tactics. That is why biathlons are increasingly popular, as they take away the advantage of having the best bike.”

How does Issy train for three disciplines?

It involves a lot of hard work. Issy joined Horsham’s Atlantis Swimming Club at the age of 10 and is one of a healthy number of members to have claimed impressive results. The club has County, Regional and National squads and Issy has reached the top group. She said: “Atlantis is a big commitment as you have to devote a lot of time to swimming several times a week. But I train hard every session and try to do my very best for Atlantis, and the coaching they give me improves my times in the triathlon and biathlon.”

And running?

Issy later joined the Blue Star Harriers. Despite initially hating middle distance running, she nonetheless showed natural ability.

Training with two older athletes, Issy focuses on the 1500m and 3000m, but also competes in the

What does she need to do to reach the top?

Continue improving in all three disciplines. She hopes to shave a

couple of seconds off her 100m front crawl over the season, as well as improving her technique whilst swimming in rough conditions. Issy said: “I'm strong in the pool, but when it comes to open lakes, like the one at Hever Castle, I tend to struggle. I have a smooth technique, whereas you need a powerful stroke to cut through the heavy water.”

How far can she go?

Owing to the success of athletes such as the Brownlee brothers, the triathlon is popular across the country, particularly the south, so the competition for places at the highest level is fierce. However, Issy has her sights set on the Olympics. Who knows, she could be at Paris in 2024!

Rob Ayling, Owner of New Street Butchers, Horsham Town Centre is sadly lacking a butcher, a baker and for that matter a candlestick maker.

However, on the fringes of town, L.M Clapham’s on Elm Grove and New Street Butchers are among the few to have survived economic downturns and changing shopping habits.

With people now turning back to good quality, locally sourced produce, those that made it through tough times are reaping the rewards.

We met Rob Ayling, owner of New Street Butchers and Delicatessen, winners at the Sussex Food and Drink Awards.

How long have you been a butcher?

I started here when I was 16, straight from school. I planned to take three months off, but my dad said: ‘No you're not. I've got a friend who runs a butcher’s and he needs a lad to start straight away.’ So, I came here and worked for David Unstead. He was a hard taskmaster, but I'm glad he was as he taught me the value of hard work.

Did you take over from David?

Another butcher, Bernie, took over for a few years, before he too retired 20 years ago. Bernie approached me and my dad to

see if we’d consider buying the business and we jumped at the chance. We ran New Street Butchers as partners and most of the time we got on very well!

Are supermarkets partly to blame?

We have lost our greengrocers to the supermarkets and they’ve had a good go at bakers too. But when it comes to meat, they can't hang it, prepare it and care for it like an experienced butcher can. Nowadays, people are increasingly appreciating this quality and our trade has risen considerably. Customers know the importance of local produce and understand how important they are to the whole community.

Where do you source your meat from?

We always used local farms, and in years past that was just a given. Now, customers want to know about your suppliers. We bring in our pork from Richard Scott, who run the family-run Scott Free-Range in Cootham, whilst Shaun Hutchings, who worked here long ago and now runs his own butcher’s in Partridge Green, supplies beef and lamb from his Ashurst farm.

Our poultry comes from R.P Meats in Brighton, and all these

relationships have been built over many years. We've never had a complaint on the quality of the meat we sell.

Have people’s tastes changed over the years?

When I started out, people ordered simple stuff. We sold mince, pork chops, sausages, diced beef and diced pork. We still sell plenty of that, but people are more adventurous with their flavours. They want meat that is oven ready, so we have kebabs that are ready to be cooked and stuffed chickens or chicken Kievs.

There needs to be an element of convenience in what you offer.

Do you have more choice with less volume?

To a degree, that is the case.

Years ago, people just asked for pork sausages. Now we have lamb and mint, beef and horseradish, wild boar and apple, and many more. Still, lots of customers have a look down the list before ordering a good oldfashioned pork sausage. We try new things and sometimes it

takes several weeks before a customer will decide to give it a try.

Does the delicatessen offer local produce too?

Yes, there’s a good number of Horsham suppliers. We have Ready for Honey which is made by a Horsham man with his own apiary, awardwinning cheeses from Bookham Harrison Farm in Rudgwick, wine from Bolney Wine Estate, gin from Cabin Pressure, beers from Hepworth’s and local jams and chutneys. We also have a delivery of fresh bread from the fantastic Jengers Mead Bakery in Billingshurst every morning. It is such a shame that we don't have any bakers in Horsham town any longer, especially as I remember when there were three in New Street alone! So, it’s nice we’re able to offer that service here.

Where are your customers coming from?

We serve a lot of local residents but people travel here from all around the district and beyond. We also supply local catering companies, pubs, restaurants and care homes. People like the fact that it's a family business and when it comes to building partnerships with other businesses, that’s certainly a factor.

Have you considered expanding?

We did look at the possibility of running a stall in the Carfax market on Saturdays, but we were wary of overstretching. We’ve also pondered the idea of introducing tables and chairs outside the shop, but we’re not sure it’s quite right for the area.

We were named best butchers at the 2018 Sussex Food & Drink Awards. It’s an award that we know gets a lot of media attention and is well respected.

PAUL FEARN ART WITH CHEMICAL E Paul On Wildlife Art...

‘Wildlife art has traditionally been two things: colonial and technical. Colonial in the sense that it’ll typically depict a zebra under a tree or a herd of elephants with a backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

In terms of technical depiction, art was used to record the flora and fauna discovered by explorers and scientists. We would shoot birds of paradise and an artist would take precise

measurements to accurately recreate its size and colour.

Wildlife art has taken a long time to move away from those two aspects. Contemporary art has come on leaps and bounds, but if you visit a wildlife exhibition, you will see that the transition away from traditional art is only just beginning.

I started out with very traditional pencil drawings of wildlife. At one exhibition, someone came in and muttered ‘there's nothing contemporary here’ and left within seconds. That was an eyeopener for me, as I realised that

it doesn't matter how many hours you spend creating a realistic pencil portrait if it’s not what people want. I decided to create something different that would appeal to a contemporary wildlife art market.’

On Creating Art...

‘I believe I'm the only artist creating work of this kind, with this level of control.

I combine chemicals with metal to create an unusual and unique pattern. The wildlife depicted is

almost incidental to the finish.

I love the textures that are created when metal reacts with chemicals. To a degree, I can control certain elements, particularly colours, by using specific oxides.

The effect my artistic process creates does tend to require a focal image that fills the sheet of metal, so my art may feature Koi carp or a flocks of birds, as oppose to a single animal.

Alternatively, I may create an image of one animal in an abstract form. One of my paintings, entitled Mud and

Often, retired people have managed their finances successfully over the years and enter retirement mortgage free. At the same time, many, whilst having no mortgage, also suffer from reduced income and there is a saying in our profession that it is not always wise to have everything tied up in bricks and mortar and yet have nothing to spend. Others may wish to continue their mortgage past normal lender retirement age, whilst they may still be working.

There are schemes where equity can be turned into a mortgage (not necessarily equity release) and where off-spring may be able to assist with the repayments in order to secure and protect their inheritance whilst also ensuring a comfortable retirement for their parents.

This is not right for everyone, but it is certainly worth talking to a qualified adviser to review all possibilities.

According to some lenders reports, there are an estimated 600,000 people due to come to maturity on their interest only mortgage by 2020, aged over 60. Many will probably have no way of repaying their interest only mortgage. Some will have endowments that didn’t meet expectations, or maybe the house has not increased in price as much as hoped.

Stricter mortgage rules and lending criteria has made it harder for those over 55 wanting to re-mortgage. However, despite the high street being almost a closed entity, there are plenty of other options (not that your current lender is likely to advise them - they just want their money back!) The lender has the right to request repayment of their loan at end of the mortgage term. If the customer has no way of repaying this and has just continued to pay the interest over the last twenty-five years or so, they face the possibility of having their home repossessed or being forced to move out.

On the high street, the end of the loan term will normally hit those aged between 65 to 70. This is not new news but does highlight that many people are still burying their head in the sand and hoping this will go away or the lender may be lenient.

There are a number of lenders that recognise that 'normal retirement' age is no longer set in stone and people continue to work long in to later life. These are not high street names and as such, rates may be slightly higher than the big super tanker, large volume producing household names that we are used to.

But at least they will consider helping out and could keep you in your family home!

‘Before I even think about working on the metal, I will draw different compositions and whittle them down to a favourite, which will dictate the colours and metal I use.

Primarily, I use dirty metals like copper and brass, as they react very well with oxides to form rustic effects.

Before I add chemicals, the metal sheets need sanding and lathing, as they tend to come out of the factory shiny and greasy, whereas I need the acids to bite into the metal to create patterns and textures.

I use a mixture of chemicals and leave them to form for anywhere from a few minutes to several days.

Verdigris is the effect created when a copper roof or structure, like the Statue of Liberty, is weathered by the elements over a long period of

time. I recreate atmospheric oxidation by applying acetic acids to copper sheets.

Techniques I’ve developed through trial and error enable me to manipulate the colours I create, as well as the patterns to a lesser extent.

You might think that the colour created would influence the animal I choose to depict on each piece, but it’s not the case.

I utilise a wide range of oxides to create different colours, as once you look past the idea that an elephant must be grey, you can paint it any colour you like.’

On the Day Job...

‘Painting is a full-time occupation for me. I studied up to A’ level and from there I'm self-taught.

After studying languages at university, I worked for the Home Office for 12 years before realising I hated working under fluorescent lights!

I took redundancy and that allowed me to pursue art, which I’ve loved since I was young.

Wildlife has always interested me and has long been the focus of my artistic output. My wife

and I are both keen divers and have visited some of the world's best tropical diving sites. The more we have travelled, the most interest we have taken in conservation.

The world is starting to wake up to issues like coral bleaching and plastic pollution. As a wildlife enthusiast and artist, I want to help if I can.

For the last four years, I have been a finalist in the international David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year competition. David passed away last year, which was a huge loss, as he has done incredible work

for wildlife conservation, raising millions for vital projects. He has been an inspiration to me since I was young. The competition donates 50% of any artwork sold to the David Shepherd Foundation, so to have reached the final and raised money for David’s foundation was a proud moment for me.

Before moving to Southwater, I exhibited around Kingston Upon Thames. My work has also been featured at The Dark Water Gallery in Brighton and the Joie De Vivre pop-up gallery in Esher.

I have also joined the Horsham Artists Open Studios (HAOS) group who are wonderfully organised! I’ll be exhibiting in the HAOS Art Trail in June and again at the HAOS Art Fair in October.’

OF LOVE Love and Marriage, the latest exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, certainly proves that the course of true love doesn’t always run smooth.

There’s plenty for the romantics, with remarkable wedding dresses on display, from hand-embroidered Chinese silk imported in the 1860s to a shocking pink dress for a fashion-conscious bride in the 1970s.

Thanks to the generosity of the people of Horsham district, the exhibition contains a digital slideshow of photographs from weddings spanning the generations.

Tthere are also fascinating accounts of what can happen when a marriage goes awry.

Wife sales occurred here in Horsham and were common in the 17th and 18th centuries as they offered an informal form of divorce to unhappy couples!

Wife sales were not as cold hearted as would be imagined today, as often the arrangement was made in private before the public sale. As wives were legally subordinate to their husbands, this method was used to divorce one’s wife and recover some money in compensation for this loss of “property.”

One writer described a sale in 1772 where the husband: “puts a halter about the neck and thereby leads her to the next market place, and there puts her up to auction to be sold to the

best bidder, as if she were a brood mare or milch-cow. A purchaser is generally provided beforehand on these occasions.”

CHANGING FACE OF LOVE Horsham Museum’s exhibition looks at all aspects of love and marriage, and is worth a visit, not least for its extensive collection of wedding dresses spanning 200 years.

These include a rare grey Quaker

bride’s dress and groom outfits dating to the 1820s, 15 years before Queen Victoria set the new trend for white dresses.

Visitors can also see photographs spanning 150 years of Horsham’s history that show couples, families and friends enjoying their special day together, alongside books about love and romance, an 18th century sexual guide, documents outlining 17th century marriage settlements and a range of wedding certificates dating from the Victorian era through to civil partnerships.

Together, they offer an insight into the ways in which the institutions of love and marriage have changed over the centuries.

One major change, in the western world, has been the now obligatory white dress. In many cultures, white is worn for funerals and not at weddings, particularly in Buddhist and Hindu countries. In India, red is a popular colour for wedding clothing, as it signals prosperity and success.

in 1840, when Queen Victoria wore a white dress to marry Prince Albert, that white dresses become commonplace. Before Victoria, most people wore their best dress, regardless of its colour.

LUCKY GARTERS The bride was often dressed to reflect her family’s social standing, and wedding dresses for wealthy women would be made from the richest silks, furs and lace, and lavishly decorated.

When Queen Victoria chose her

There are recorded instances of brides being mobbed at the altar, with men throwing them to the ground. wedding dress, she wanted to be viewed as a bride and not as the Head of State. She deliberately chose a white dress trimmed with lace, white satin and orange blossom as a contrast to the crimson velvet state robe.

This departure from the norm captured the public imagination and inspired her contemporaries

to follow suit. Victoria’s choice of Honiton lace also had the useful side-effect of promoting the British lace industry.

Given the impracticality of white for day-to-day wear, and its increasing connection to weddings, single-wear wedding dresses have become the norm in the affluent, post-WWII world.

In the past, it wasn’t uncommon for christening robes to be made from old wedding dresses, or for parts of the dress to be handed down to the bride’s daughter.

Now as wedding dresses are typically only worn once, they can be more fantastical in design.

Many brides wear a lucky garter under their wedding gowns too.

In ancient times, bridal garments were considered blessed and the bride would have all her clothes ripped from her by the greedy guests on the night of the wedding.

Gradually attention focused on one small part of the wedding outfit; the bride’s garter-ribbon, a symbol of sexuality and fertility.

In Medieval and Tudor England, unmarried men fought for the bride’s garter to ensure they would be the next to find a beautiful and fertile wife. There are recorded instances of brides being mobbed at the altar, with men throwing them to the ground and snatching the garter during the ceremony.

Naturally, the church protested and the custom evolved. Later, the groom would remove the lucky garter from his new wife in the privacy of the bridal chamber and toss it down from the window to the men waiting excitedly below. This custom has been replaced by today’s practice of tossing the wedding

bouquet to the female guests.

BUNDLING OF LOVE Men’s wedding clothing isn’t as well represented in the museum’s collections as culturally they were not as important as women’s dresses.

Even today, many men hire their wedding suit, whereas most women buy their dress to keep.

Throughout history, most grooms have simply worn their best suit, but in the early 19th century there was a fashion for embroidered wedding waistcoats which were worn on the day and kept as a memento.

As well as looking at wedding day suits and dresses, the museum’s exhibition looks at

traditions that have changed over the years. These include the custom known as bundling, whereby two young people were wrapped in blankets and made to sleep in the same bed overnight without sexual contact.

Bundling was practiced in communities across the world in the 16th - 18th centuries. The idea was that the young couple could spend a chaste night together, under the parental roof, to ensure their compatibility in marriage.

In colonial America, it was common for wooden boards to be placed between the couple to ensure that they had no physical contact. In 18th century Wales, the bundled man retained “an essential part of his dress” and the woman had “her under petticoat fastened at the bottom

by a sliding knot” to ensure that there was no funny business.

In 1765, Thomas Turner, a Sussex man, was courting his future wife and mentions in his personal records that he spent the night with her twice before marriage.

On the first night, he sat up with her until 5am, and on the second visit he stayed with her until dawn. By the 19th century, that practice had declined!
