Brolly Brewing in Redkiln Close, Horsham hosted a launch party for The Fermentarium on Saturday 18 April.

The Fermentarium is located opposite the independent brewery and taproom, owned by husband-and-wife Brook and Holly Saunders.

It will host live music on Friday nights and is available for private hire.

Brook said: ‘When the previous tenants left last year, our landlord suggested we take on the unit, as another business might affect our ability to offer outside seating. Initially, we considered opening a café, but my dream was to create a music venue. Music is in my blood and the main reason I started brewing in the first place is because my band folded and I need another creative outlet! One of our beers, Reelin in the Year, is even inspired by my favourite band, Steely Dan. ‘We used to live near The Rec Rooms and watched many great acts there. Despite that,

The Rec Rooms couldn’t keep its doors open, so our challenge will be making a music venue financially viable. We hope to achieve this by growing the brewery. People love our taproom (named Best Independent Brewery Taproom at the 2025 SIBA Business Awards) and appreciate the lengths we go to when brewing our beers. There’s always a good atmosphere in the Taproom. We may use The Fermentarium to accommodate people at busy times, but the intention is for it to be a dedicated space for music, helped by income from private hire for events and functions.’

Although the original idea may have come from Brook, Holly made it happen. She has created an intimate, relaxed space with a well-defined decor, while also making provisions for a stage and small bar.

Horsham MP John Milne officially opened the venue, before Brolly’s supporters enjoyed music from D-Dog, with Brook playing a cajon drum as they performed classic covers

throughout the afternoon. The venue then hosted Black Heart Angel on 24 April, with May’s line-up including stand-up comedy (1 May), Soul Nest (8 May), Hommeage (22 May) and The Rattlebacks (29 May).

Brook said: ‘It was emotional to see the community come together for the launch, as this has been our dream. The venue is not yet everything we hope it will eventually be, as we are working with a local company to install a modern PA system to perfect the acoustics.

Once it’s complete, we’ll be able to offer not just a great venue, but one with great sound.

‘We also plan to introduce jazz and blues acts on Sundays. The Fermentarium has a jazz club vibe, like Ronnie Scott’s, so lends itself to that style of music. However, my ultimate dream would be to welcome Simply Dan, a fantastic Steely Dan tribute band. That would be a big one ticked off my Bucket List!’ www.brollybrewing.co.uk/fermentarium

AAH (ALL ABOUT HORSHAM) COVER STORY Our May 2026 cover features Sally Wright of Southwater and Horsham Swan Rescue at Warnham Local Nature Reserve.

We met Sally at the reserve in the evening, shortly before the gates closed. The Council’s Parks and Countryside team allowed us access to the fringes of the Mill Pond, near the Discovery Hub. One of the resident swans, a Pen (female) named Lori, was lured closer to the bank with food. As photographer Alan Wright crouched amongst the reeds, Editor Ben Morris was throwing food towards Lori from a yellow bucket, while still trying to stay out of the photo!

We didn’t quite capture the ideal shot, as Lori was largely out of picture during Alan’s efforts to take a closer portrait of Sally. We also took pictures at the Rookwood Golf Course pond, but couldn’t hang around as we were holding up a four-ball!

DISTRICTNEWS MONTHLY ROUND-UP OF WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT

Elections for the new Horsham Parish Council take place on 7 May. It is expected that – once elected – the 18 new councillors will re-name the council as Horsham Town Council.

The new council has operated in a “shadow” capacity since January, setting up structures, policies and priorities that will allow it to work effectively once the new councillors take office. The council will serve over 22,000 residents and be responsible for representing the community, supporting local services and

taking decisions on issues that matter to the town. The new council builds on the work of Neighbourhood Councils, who have provided a voice for residents for over 50 years.

Jane Eaton, Chief Executive of Horsham District Council, said: ‘The creation of a town council is a first for Horsham. The new council will protect local decision-making, champion Horsham’s needs, and ensure residents continue to have councillors focused specifically on the town.’

Councillors elected on 7 May will decide most of the services the new council will be responsible for. Allotments will be the first, but others could include local arts, events and landmarks, parks and playing fields and cemeteries. The creation of the Parish Council follows a two-part consultation with local residents, businesses and community groups.

Some 75% of respondents supported the formation of a parish council for improved community representation in decision making.

Cornerstone Methodist Church is organising a series of events to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Methodism in Horsham. An exhibition entitled ‘Methodism in Horsham and its surrounding villages over the last 250 years’ will be held at Horsham Library on 11 – 23 May. As part of a ‘Wesley Weekend’ at Cornerstone London Road to honour the founder of the Methodist movement, The Wesley Story – A Radio Play will be performed on Saturday 16 May, 5pm. Entries are being welcomed for the eighth annual Horsham Film Festival, with an awards night held at Everyman Cinema later this year.

There are four categories for both Over 18s and Students, each with their own award, including Best Drama, Best Documentary, Best Animation and Best Comedy. Work has been completed on the Broadbridge Way flood resilience project. A blockage in a culvert running under Broadbridge Way had previously contributed to substantial flooding of the recreation field and Monster Play Park (above). Volunteers cleared debris to relieve the flooding, revealing that a build-up of silt and hidden roots of a tree were obstructing the natural flow of the water. This led to Operation Watershed Broadbridge Way, part funded by West Sussex County Council’s Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund, to protect the Village Centre and play park. The project involved de-silting of the culvert, the installation of an 800mm “trash screen” to prevent blockages, and extensive re-profiling of the banks to return the stream to its natural path and depth. The planting of wildflowers has also increased biodiversity.

Project Lead Cllr Sam Hazell said: ‘Bringing this project to fruition required collaboration between the Parish Council, WSCC and local landowners. By working closely with County Councillor Christian Mitchell and contractors Countryside Civil and Infrastructure, we were able to resolve this problem.’

TOOVEY’S Revised plans for the Bishopric area of Horsham place a stronger emphasis on improving access between John Lewis/Waitrose and the town centre.

At an HDC Cabinet meeting in March, Cllr Ruth Fletcher (Member for Planning & Infrastructure) outlined updated proposals, which reflect public feedback. Other key priorities include retaining mature trees on the western side of the Bishopric, the addition of a waterfall feature along Albion Way, and new flexible space for accessing businesses, outdoor dining and market trading. There will also be improvements to street furniture and signage, as well as new urban green spaces. Funding for detailed design and implementation was approved in 2023.

The Steyning Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with a wide range of events and activities held on 22 – 31 May. The programme features comedy, theatre, literature and the visual arts – with some events held in a Big Top at Fletchers Croft.

Highlights include Steyning Drama Club’s production of Quingo at Steyning Cricket Club on Tuesday 26 May, 7pm.

A troupe of thespians perform clues and musical interludes spanning all genres and eras during a show which combines a quiz and bingo. Tickets £6.

Musical highlights of the Festival include an opening night party with The Beatles Dub Club at the Big Top on Friday 22 May, 7.30pm. Fleetwood Mac’s iconic Rumours album will be performed by Transatlantic Ensemble in the Big Top on Wednesday 27 May, 7.30pm.

A tribute album to Wisborough Green musician Matt Long reached No.1 on the official Jazz and Blues charts upon its release in April. Matt was lead singer, guitarist and main songwriter for multi award-winning rock band Catfish, and was twice Instrumentalist of the Year at the UK Blues Awards. He died of cancer in 2024, aged 29. Members of Horsham Cycling were due to welcome two record-breaking cyclists as they arrived in the Horsham District on Tuesday 28 April. Father and son George and Josh Kohler set off from their Norfolk home in March 2025, and have since cycled across Europe, Central Asia, China, down the South East Asian peninsula, across Australia, and the width of South America. They are now nearing the final stages of their ride around the world and were expected to arrive in Storrington on 28 April, with local cyclists there to greet them. It was hoped that they would ride into the Carfax for lunch at Panino’s. The Kohlers have so far raised about £33,000 for UNICEF. kohlerscycle.com

Amberley Museum hosts James Bond at Amberley on Sunday 24 May. In 1984, locations across the old Chalk Pits and Quarry Tunnel were transformed into the fictional Main Strike Mine for the 1985 film, A View to a Kill. A group of 25 volunteers joined the Friends of Horsham Park litter pick on Sunday 19 April.

The twice-yearly event is held to clear visible and hidden debris from paths, grass and undergrowth around the park, with April’s litter haul including bottles, cans and plastics.

PITCHPERFECT HORSHAM’S CRICKETERS PREPARE TO DEFEND TITLES

Men’s 1st XI Horsham Cricket Club enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, winning both the ECB Premier Division of the Sussex Cricket League and the Premier Division of the BACA Sussex Women’s Cricket League. As the two teams prepare to defend their titles, AAH visited the Cricketfield Road ground to hear about the club’s resurgence…

Horsham Men’s 1st XI dominated the ECB Premier Division of the Sussex Cricket League in 2025. Blending experience and youth, Horsham went undefeated as they won the title for the first time in 21 years.

There were fine some individual performances: Matthew De Villiers’ unbeaten 168 from 112 balls against Three Bridges; Will Beer’s century in the final match against local rivals Roffey; Bertie Foreman’s five wicket haul at both Preston Nomads and Bognor Regis; and Ollie Sheen claiming five wickets for only 41 runs against Ifield. However, captain Will Beer emphasised the importance of team spirit over the season.

He said: ‘We have built a team around younger players who have progressed from our junior teams, and more experienced players who help with their development.

Teams are allowed to field one overseas player and last year that was South African Matthew de Villiers. Matt had an exceptional season and is now playing first-class cricket at Joburg Super Kings. However, the whole team was hungry for success and we hit a sweet spot.’

Will was born and raised in Horsham and would often watch his dad Andrew Beer and uncle Robin play for the 1st XI. Will inherited their passion for the game, playing for Horsham’s junior teams before joining the Academy at Sussex County Cricket Club at 13. The leg break bowler (a wrist-spin technique) went on to represent the County for 15 years from 2008, playing every game as the Sussex Sharks won the 2009 Twenty20 Cup, taking two wickets in the final at Edgbaston.

However, even during his professional career, he would regularly turn out for his home club at the weekend.

Will said: ‘Cricket is one of the few sports where amateurs will face professional players. There are still several Sussex players who occasionally play for Horsham, including Tom Clark and Tom Haines, will Jofra Archer was in the side only a few years ago.

Imagine coming to Horsham as a visiting batsman, expecting a nice day out, and facing an England fast bowler!’

‘However, we’ve been gradually shifting the club’s ethos. In 2019, Horsham were relegated to Division 2, which was a wake-up call. The club had perhaps been relying on returning professionals to win the odd game to keep Horsham Academy player Bertie Messenger, 14 SPORTS 23

it in the Premier Division, rather than focusing on its youth programme. The club’s culture was split between the 1st XI and everyone else. It needed a reset and under the guidance of Chairman Chris Nash, we have achieved that. Some of the 1st XI coaches and players help train the juniors, while we provide young players with more opportunities in senior cricket. This is clearly paying dividends, with both the men and the women winning the Premier Division.’

EMERGING TALENTS Horsham’s talented juniors include 14-yearolds Bertie Messenger and Ben Nash.

Bertie joined Horsham as an eight-year-old and his versatility as a right-handed batsman and leg spin bowler makes him one to watch.

He made his debut for the 1st XI in the final game of last season at Haywards Heath.

Although a dominant display by Horsham’s opening batsmen meant that Bertie didn’t need to put his pads on, he did excel with the ball in hand.

He said: ‘I bowled an over against the tail-enders and took two wickets in two balls.

It was a lot different to Under-14s cricket – they throw the ball a lot faster and hit it much harder! But it was fun and hopefully I can have more opportunities in the men’s teams and maybe the 1st XI this season.’

Ben’s dad Mark and uncle Chris both played in the outstanding Horsham team that won two Premier League titles in the early 2000s and – famously – the Cockspur Cup (ECB

Captain Will Beer National Club Championship) at Lord’s in 2005. Now, he hopes to follow in their footsteps.

Ben, a batsman and wicket-keeper, said: ‘My dad stopped playing competitively quite a long time ago, but I often came down to Horsham to support my uncle, Chris. I enjoy playing for the Under-14s and last season, we had some strong results, finishing runners-up in the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival.

I played for the 3rd XI a few times and hope this season to play in

the 2nd XI. If I play well. If I perform well, hopefully I’ll get a chance in the 1st XI, as it would be good to play alongside my uncle.’

format where teams bowl 20 overs) and Limited Over (40 Overs) matches. Having narrowly missed out on the title in 2024, Horsham dominated last season and they too thrived with a combination of youth and experience.

Izi Noakes, who recently took over the captaincy from Hannah Phelps, said: ‘We were disappointed to lose out to Hailsham by a couple of points in 2024, so it was great to come back strongly last season, especially with the Men’s 1st XI also being crowned champions. This season, we have entered a new national competition, the ECB Women’s Club Cup T20, and aim to do well in that, while also aiming for back-toback championships. It will be a rebuilding year, as some experienced players who have served the club well make way for young talent; but I believe we have the strength in depth to manage that.

‘I live in Shoreham but have played for Horsham since I was 14, as it has a beautiful ground and provides good support for women’s and girls’ cricket. Girls progress through Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 age categories before feeding into the 1st and 2nd XI. Although I played for England at Under-19 level, I was born too early to have a chance of playing professionally.

However, it’s wonderful that girls now have more opportunities as the women’s game grows. A few of our Horsham girls are showing great potential and hopefully they can progress and play at the highest levels.’

TALENT PATHWAY When the BACA Sussex Women’s Cricket League was first formed with the support of Sir Ron Aldridge, there were only two Divisions – the Premier and Division 2. In just three years, Division 2 has expanded into three separate leagues, with Horsham 2nd XI playing in Central Division alongside Weald Willows (who play at Thakeham) and with Wisborough Green in the West Division. The gradual expansion is a sign that the women’s game is still attracting new players, says Tess Walder, Women’s Cricket Manager at Horsham.

‘When I was growing up, I didn’t have opportunities to play cricket or football, so hockey was my game. I became involved at Horsham when my daughter showed an interest in cricket and joined the Under-13s.

I offered to help with training and still love being involved 17 years later! When I first joined, the club had one women’s team and lacked the numbers to form teams in different junior age groups. That has all changed, thanks to greater exposure of women’s cricket and strong support from the governing body.

‘Now, we have many girls at Under-11s, where they learn the fundamentals of bowling, batting, catching and throwing.

Many continue through the age groups and progress into the women’s teams.

Although the league structure many lack the depth of the men’s – where the Sussex League has 12 Divisions – it is still expanding and I expect a Division 3 to be introduced in the coming years.

‘There is a clear talent pathway too and some of our girls regularly play for Sussex. Georgia Adams, daughter of former England cricketer Chris Adams, started her cricketing journey with Horsham and has since starred for Sussex and Hampshire, and been selected for England T20 Internationals.

She came back to the club for our awards night, which was fantastic for our young players, as she’s an example of what can be achieved.’

Overseeing the club’s current success is Chairman and Club President Chris Nash, who works closely with other committee members including brother Mark (Senior Cricket Development Officer) and Dave Messenger (Junior Development Officer).

Chris is another former County player born locally, attending Heron Way, Tanbridge and Collyer’s before his first-class career began at Loughborough MCC University. Initially a bowler, he later specialised as a

Training at Horsham CC batsman, often opening for Sussex, where he twice won the County Championship. After 15 years at Sussex, he spent three years at Nottinghamshire, before returning to Horsham, where he now helps on and off the field.

Chris said: ‘At this stage of my career, I’m content to play a peripheral role, rather than ask a younger player to give up his day when there’s a strong likelihood of them having little involvement. It’s better for their development to play for the 2nds or 3rds, where they will have more opportunities to shine.

‘However, it was lovely to be involved in last year’s success. Will has done a great job as captain, especially with the young players coming through. When I was growing up, Dr John Dew was Club President. For Dr Dew, it was so important that junior cricketers had opportunities to progress. Somewhere along the way, we lost that ethos. Now, we have a thriving junior section once again, with hundreds of girls and boys attending training and matches every week. It’s vital that we support them, and nurture their development, so that everyone feels part of the same club.’

If the good times have returned to Horsham Cricket Club, then perhaps there is hope for the return of the Horsham Festival of Cricket.

Cricketfield Road last hosted a County Championship match, as well as a one-day cup match featuring Sussex Sharks, in 2015. More recently, a wonderful Caribbean Day – which sees a Horsham XI taking on a Barbados XI – has helped to soften the loss. The seating area outside the pavilion ensures the club arguably boasts the best outdoor drinking spot in Horsham, providing the day with a real party atmosphere. However, there is real hope that the Festival could return too…

2011 Horsham Cricket Festival Chris said: ‘We have not welcomed Sussex 1st XI for over 10 years and hosting the Festival was one of my goals when I took over as Chairman. A few years ago, our facilities were not up to County standard, but our grounds team have done a remarkable job and the pitch looks superb.

‘We have worked hard to attract Sussex 2nd XI and they will be playing over 20 matches at Horsham this season. As a club, we have a great history with Sussex, having produced many County players over the years, and we are strengthening that relationship once again. There are financial hurdles that need to overcome before we can bring back the Festival, but my dream is to bring back first-class cricket, with the ultimate goal of hosting a 50-over Rothesay County Championship match in 2027.’

The Sportsman in Amberley has become a community-run pub after a successful campaign by local volunteers.

The pub is known for its incredible views overlooking Amberley Wild Brooks, with many visitors using the rear terrace to catch a glimpse of the white-tailed sea eagles which nest in the nature reserve.

Villagers have been battling to keep the pub open since the previous tenants left in 2024, after which The Sportsman was placed on the market. Roger Agate fronted a Save Our Sportsman (SOS) Action Group in a bid to prevent it being converted into residential dwellings.

Roger said: ‘My grandfather used to run the grocery shop in Amberley and I have fond memories of growing up in the village. The Sportsman’s history dates back to the mid-19th century, when it was first established as a beer house. It was later in brewery ownership, firstly with Chichester-based Henty & Constable, then Friary Meux.

‘However, it was under Chris and Jenny Shanahan that the pub truly thrived and became a focal point of community life. They ran the pub for about 20 years, before leasing it to a succession of tenants. Each landlord tried something different: One brought in a very good chef, while another took inspiration from taprooms and brewed on-site. They all had good intentions and some worked very hard, but all eventually succumbed to the financial challenges involved.

‘After the previous tenants left, Chris put the freehold up for sale. There was interest, but anyone looking at buy for commercial reasons could see that the pub required investment, so its value as a business was below what the owner was hoping to realise. Despite the hopes of everyone that it would remain a pub, it was – in all likelihood – going to be sold to a developer and converted for residential use.

The only way to prevent this was to buy The Sportsman as a not-for-profit community asset.

Although I had no prior experience of the pub trade, some of us regulars believed it could be a proper village pub again.’

SHATTERED DREAMS The Save Our Sportsman (SOS) campaign was formed, with volunteers conducting a survey amongst villagers and patrons. The responses showed that people wanted a traditional pub with a casual atmosphere, which they could visit any time of day. They wanted a local selection of beers and wines, and good food at affordable prices – not a gastropub or fine dining restaurant.

The newly-formed committee of Community Sportsman Amberley Ltd took inspiration from Plunkett UK, a charity which helps communities rescue and run local businesses, particularly shops and pubs. Their plan was to raise funds to buy the freehold by selling shares to locals wanting to own part of a village pub, as well as through business loans and grant schemes.

It was initially hoped that a significant proportion of the necessary funds would come from The Community Ownership Fund (COF), a government initiative designed to help community groups take ownership of local assets, such as shops and pubs. The newlyformed SOS committee delayed the submission of an application to the COF, opting instead to compile a more detailed case for the next round of applications. The delay proved costly.

‘The COF was a victim of his own success,’ says Roger. ‘The first rounds of grants attracted a lot of publicity, as they were very successful, so the third round of applications was oversubscribed.

By the time our application was due to be considered, a General Election had been called and the COF initiative ended with the change in government.

‘Such a grant would have formed a significant part of our fundraising target to buy the pub’s freehold.

Having missed out on the grant, we were left in a state of limbo, as we needed to make up for the shortfall in other ways. However, we continued to seek support from individual shareholders, asking for a minimum of £500, with a fundraising target of £780,000 We have received support from a mix of people. Some live in Amberley or have connections through friends and family. One shareholder is a former resident who now lives in Australia! I originally thought we were doing this for the village, so it has been a pleasant surprise to have received support from people from much further afield who love the pub and appreciate what we’re trying to achieve.’

‘It has been a hard slog and we’ve gone months without making any progress at times, so it feels surreal for all of us involved in the campaign to have reached our goal.

However, we are continuing to sell shares, as it will enable us to pay back some of the loans and fund improvements to the pub.

Throughout this time, our full-time manager Jo Westland has done an amazing job and it really does feel central to village life once again.’

GREAT GRUB The Sportsman has recently won a coveted CAMRA award for local branch pub of the year 2026, returning to the CAMRA Good Beer Guide after a 20-year absence. It offers ales from a number of Sussex breweries including Firebird Brewing Co and Lakeside Brewing Co, and hosts a Beer Festival twice a year. One of the committee members is largely responsible for sourcing beers and the prospect of The Sportsman brewing its own beers in an adjacent garage has been mooted for the future.

The pub works in partnership with Petworth-based wine merchants Henning’s on its wine list too, which currently includes bottles from nearby Nutbourne Vineyards.

The pub has both a lunchtime and an evening menu, with a selection of very reasonably-priced pub classics including South Downs pork sausages with mash, vegetables and gravy (£15.95), Best beer-battered fish and chips with crushed peas and lemon (large £19.50/small £15), Wholetail scampi with chips, tartare, peas and lemon (£15) and ham, egg and chips (£14.95). On its lunchtime menus, it has a welcome range of lighter bites, including baked potatoes with daily fillings (£10.95) and a selection of sourdough sandwiches (all £11.95) including brie

The Sportsman is really famed for its views, but if it’s known for anything else, it’s probably its range of wonderful burgers. These include a crispy halloumi burger (£17.50), Peri-peri breaded chicken burger (£18.50) and arguably the pick of the bunch, a Trenchmore Farm Sussex Wagyu beef burger (£19.50) which is sourced from the Cowfold farm famed for its melt-in-the-mouth beef.

Sussex wagyu burger a Bridge group and book club regularly hold meetings there. The Wild Brooks, adjacent to RSPB Pulborough Brooks, attract people from far and wide. Many visitors perch themselves on the outside decking and scan the landscape through binoculars or long-lens cameras. Thanks to a LEAP grant from Horsham District Council, several old wooden garden tables have been replaced by tables made from recycled plastic, which are better suited to the changeable climate.

Roger said: ‘The Wild Brooks is vast – over 800 acres – and as it’s mostly owned by Sussex Wildlife trust in partnership with the RSPB, it’s protected habitat. There are always

The landscape is remarkable and changes by the hour, as it shifts with the tide and floods during heavy rain. When people see it for the first time, their jaw drops. We are treated to the most beautiful sunsets too, so just sitting outside is a wonderful way to spend an evening.’

‘We have five guest rooms too, with several overlooking the landscape. Many come here as Amberley as an ideal location between the North and South Downs. We have plans to improve the view too, potentially replacing the

conservatory with a more permanent structure in future. There is scope to extend the dining area too, and possibly add a lower terrace to make best use of the views and give even more people to visit our beautiful community-run pub.’

Common questions regarding Grant of Probate Dealing with a loved one’s estate can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re faced with unfamiliar legal processes at such a difficult time. Here we’ve answered a few common questions to help guide you through the basics.

What is a Grant of Probate?

It’s an official document from the Court giving executors named in the Will the legal authority to deal with an estate. If there’s no Will, it is called a Grant of Letters of Administration.

Does every estate need a Grant?

Not always. It depends on the estate value, the type of assets and how they were owned. If the estate is small or assets were owned jointly (like a bank account), a Grant might not be needed.

But it’s tricky to work out, so getting legal advice is a good idea.

What does an executor do?

The executor (or administrator if there’s no Will) handles everything in the estate.

This includes identifying assets, liabilities, getting valuations, paying inheritance tax, applying for the Grant, selling assets, settling costs and other taxes, preparing accounts and distributing what’s left to beneficiaries named in the Will or under the intestacy rules. It’s a big responsibility and executors are personally liable for their actions.

How long does it take?

The Grant can take a few weeks to many months. Dealing with the administration after the Grant usually takes 6 – 12 months for straightforward estates. Complex estates, especially if there are disputes, may take several years.

How much does it cost?

Each estate is different depending on the value and complexity. Common costs include court and registrar fees, taxes,

statutory notices and bankruptcy searches.

If you use a solicitor, professional fees will range between 1% to 3% of the estate value. Costs are paid from the estate, not by executors personally.

Can I do this all myself?

Yes, but help from a solicitor can save you stress, avoid costly mistakes and may reduce the amount of tax payable on the estate, leaving more for the beneficiaries.

IDYLLIC FAMILY-RUN FREEHOUSE RE-OPENS IN THE HAVEN

Sophie & Simon Bailey with son, Hugo The Blue Ship in The Haven re-opened its doors in April, having been closed during the winter months.

Owners Simon and Sophie Bailey have run the pub, located on a rural lane between Billingshurst and Rudgwick, for 14 years. Last year, they bought The Blue Ship from brewers Hall & Woodhouse, making it a free house.

Exemplifying the challenges faced by those in hospitality, the couple closed the pub from January to March and will now only be open from Fridays to Sundays.

Sophie said: ‘Even before Covid, we were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as the pub was quiet. We expected to return to a Wednesday to Sunday service, but prices rose so quickly that making ends meet proved challenging. On weekdays, we were not busy enough to cover the costs of turning on the lights and heating a 400-year-old building.

‘I also run a construction consultancy and Simon works with me during busy periods.

This has stood us in good stead during recent times. For the pub to be financially viable, we focus on the consultancy business from

Monday to Thursday, and open the doors Friday to Sunday. This condenses weekly trade across just three days, ensuring the pub is busy with a warm and friendly atmosphere.’

CARRY ON CAMPING The Blue Ship also shuts for the first three months of the year, which is largely down to its dependence on a campsite in the adjacent field, also run by the Baileys. If keep the pub open has become more challenging, growing demand for the campsite has helped to compensate. Thanks to its tranquil setting,

most of its 28 pitches are occupied on weekends throughout the spring and summer. Already, only a handful of spots remain for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Sophie said: ‘We open on May Bank Holiday weekend and the campsite remains busy until October. Our offering is basic – we have built some nice toilets, but there are no showers – and people like that. Typically, they stay for a couple of nights, perhaps having a BBQ one evening and eating with us on the other, so the campsite drives pub trade too.

We attract people from London and the coastal towns looking for a rural retreat, as well as West Sussex residents who like to explore the Downs Link and other nearby trails.

‘We close at the start of the year because the pub is too quiet. People don’t have much disposable income after Christmas, and many partake in dry January too. So, we use this time to focus on our other business, prepare the campsite for the spring, and carry out repairs and maintenance around the pub.’

‘We have recently been granted planning permission to convert a beautiful outbuilding into a one-bedroom holiday unit too, which will provide us with an additional income source. It’s another example of how our business dynamic has changed in a way we never expected!’

FAMILY FEEL The natural beauty of The Blue Ship’s locality is matched by its interior charm.

The pub has had its listed status upgraded to Grade II*, owing to the special architectural interest of its serving hatch. It is thought to be one of just seven remaining in the country, with others lost to pub closures or modernisations. With room at the bar for just one person, you might need to queue for your pint. But for most visitors, this is part of the experience.

It also typifies the feel of a traditional, family-owned pub, which The Blue Ship much is. Sophie’s mum Jacquie regularly helps Sophie with service, while dad Graeme looks after Simon and Sophie’s son Hugo, particularly when dad is busy preparing food for diners.

Sophie said: ‘The pub has the warmth that only a family can bring. Although it always felt like ours, even when it was owned by the brewery, the locals were made up for us when we bought it. We met many of our closest friends here, so it’s a lovely, supportive environment for Hugo to grow up around. He is a sociable soul, and as he arrived in May two years ago, spent most of his first summer being passed around customers!’

It may be a while yet before Hugo is pulling pints, but when he does, he’ll enjoy the freedom of a free house. The pub supports several local breweries with beers changing regularly. Currently, The Blue Ship serves ales and lagers

by Crafty Brewing in Godalming and Hepworth’s of Pulborough (including a low alcohol beer on tap), with beers from Horsham Brewery coming soon.

When it comes to food, Sophie and Simon have tried to retain the feel of a traditional pub, where anyone wanting to pop in just for a pint would feel welcome.

So, while it is food-led, The Blue Ship is not a gastropub and instead prepares “pub grub done well.” Dishes are handmade using fresh ingredients, and prices remain very reasonable, with no increases on food or drink implemented

When small adjustments quietly shrink our world In the last article, we looked at how small changes in mobility can affect everyday life and connection. But another pattern often follows quietly after those first adjustments.

Most people don’t make a conscious decision to do less. It happens gradually. A longer walk becomes a shorter one. You choose the café with easier parking. You stop standing for long periods, or decline invitations that feel like they might be a bit too much. At first, these adjustments make sense. They feel practical.

Sensible. In many ways, they are. But over time, something subtle can begin to happen.

During that time, the body can begin to compensate in ways that place extra strain elsewhere; joints stiffen, confidence drops, and movement gradually becomes something we plan around rather than something we simply do.

The circle of what feels manageable begins to shrink, often so gradually that we don’t notice it happening.

Many people who visit the clinic say a similar thing: “I thought it was just something I had to put up with.”

When adaptation becomes delay

They may have been managing discomfort for a long time before seeking advice, often very successfully. Not because they ignored it, but because they found ways to work around it.

The challenge is that when movement becomes something we work around, everyday life can slowly become smaller.

Walks become shorter. Errands become fewer. Social plans become easier to decline.

Often this narrowing happens so gradually that it’s only obvious in hindsight.

People are remarkably good at adapting. In fact, we’re often too good at it. We adjust our pace, our routes, and our routines. We learn which activities feel easier and which ones to quietly avoid.

The difficulty is that adaptation can make it easy to delay addressing the underlying problem. If something hurts, but you can still manage by changing how you move, it’s tempting to carry on. Life is busy. Other things feel more important.

Weeks turn into months. Months sometimes turn into years. Often, people only realise how much has changed when they try to return to something they used to do without thinking; a longer walk, a day out, or even standing comfortably for a period of time. What once felt easy now requires planning, hesitation, or recovery afterwards.

Addressing issues earlier also tends to mean simpler solutions, shorter recovery times, and a better chance of maintaining normal movement patterns before compensation becomes more established. And confidence is often the key that allows everyday life to stay open, rather than gradually closing in.

Staying connected to the things that matter Mobility isn’t only about physical health. It shapes how we participate in the world around us. The ability to walk comfortably through town, visit friends, spend time outdoors, or simply move without hesitation helps keep people connected to their community.

When we support movement, we’re not just addressing discomfort — we’re protecting independence, confidence, and the everyday rhythms that make life feel like yours.

THE DIAGNOSIS I was diagnosed with cancer on 4 January 2023. Some years before that, I had a hernia operation which caused me lasting problems.

In September 2022, I was in so much pain that my wife, Hazel, took me to A&E. They couldn’t find the root of my pain, but recommended a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), used to detect cancer. After a positive reading, I underwent a colonoscopy. It’s a strange experience, as you’re sedated yet conscious, and can watch the procedure on the monitor.

As a man, if there’s a TV in the room, I’m going to watch whatever’s on!

I knew from the reaction of those around me that it was bad news. I underwent a series of biopsies, MRI and CT scans which revealed 40

that I had stage 4 bowel cancer, which had spread to my liver and lungs. It wasn’t curable, but was treatable. I was told I had two to three years left to live. In that moment, a range of emotions rush around your head. You ask yourself, why me? As a man of faith, I wondered, “where is God in all this?”

THE TREATMENT I started chemotherapy in the hope it would help shrink two cancerous tumours in my bowels, which could then be cut out. Soon after starting the treatment, my Fitbit went crazy as my heartbeat had rocketed, so I went back to hospital. The drugs had triggered a heart arrhythmia, so I stopped chemotherapy to undergo cardioversion, where the heart is restarted via an electric shock. With my heartbeat back to normal, doctors tried to remove the tumours through keyhole surgery.

Unfortunately, the join holding my bowels together didn’t hold. It started to leak, causing incredible pain. So, I needed open surgery which – although successful – left me with

a colostomy bag. Out of everything that has happened, that has been the most difficult thing to accept.

After more chemotherapy, they tried to remove the cancer from my liver too, which meant that my gall bladder was taken out.

Unfortunately, when they cut me open, the cancer was worse than expected and they couldn’t proceed, so I lost my gall bladder for nothing. So, I started immunotherapy, which targets cancerous cells.

By this time, I couldn’t help but think that the end was drawing near. Alone with your thoughts, you can disappear down some very dark holes.

I had a second liver operation after immunotherapy, which was successful, and began radiotherapy to target the last traces of cancer in my lungs. If that is successful, then there will be “no evidence of disease”. Although they cannot say the cancer is gone, having no visible signs is a win for me. Still, there are daily challenges. I often feel tired and lack energy. When my six-year-old granddaughter visits, she wants “The Tickle Monster” to chase her, but I can’t do that anymore. Not being the grandad that I used to be is hard to handle.

a person of faith or not, we all place value on life, and so when something bad happens, it’s natural to ask yourself, why me?

By writing about my thoughts and reflecting on my experiences, I started to think, why not me? What have I done that sets me apart?

People have found the book helpful, as I’m very open about my feelings.

A launch night was held at the Drill Hall, now owned by Lifespring Church. I was formerly lead pastor and although I stepped down from the eldership last October, I continue to support the church and have many close friends there. About 150 people took a copy home, in return for a donation to WayMaker, a Christian charity I founded. Our focus is on sustainable change in Africa and moving away from “toxic charity”, where charities with good intentions can actually have a negative impact.

As an example, a Christian group carried out an annual toy drive, with volunteers dressing as Santa and delivering presents to poor families on Christmas Eve. It sounds wonderful, but while children would be very excited, it dented the pride of the fathers, who couldn’t afford such gifts. Now, the church invites parents to choose presents and give them to their own children. We have also built schools in Zambia and Tanzania, and run farming co-operatives focused on sustainability and breaking poverty circles.

THE GIFT Throughout my treatment, the NHS has been phenomenal. Having worked across Africa, I know poorer communities there cannot access the same professional medical help.

Andy Robinson Their only chance is to trust in God. During my prayers, I have asked for the best of God and the best of medicine. Personally, I feel medicine is a gift from God anyway. For that reason, all the money raised from my book will go towards the building of a health clinic in Zambia.

In theory, my maximum life expectancy has run out. So, believe me when I say that finding travel insurance is now extremely difficult! I will have a shortened life-span, although exactly how shortened remains to be seen. But I am

looking ahead, focusing on the things that are most important to me – my family, friends and charity. Every day is precious, so it’s important to make each one count.

Michelle Catterson is Executive Head of the Moon Hall Schools Educational Trust, a specialist day school for children with dyslexia. This September, Moon Hall will be opening a second site within the grounds of Copthorne Prep in West Sussex. AAH met Warnham-resident Michelle to discuss the school’s unique environment…

Tell us about Moon Hall School…

The school was first established in 1985 around the kitchen table at Moon Hall, the home of Mrs Berry Baker. Her son Daniel was autistic and dyslexic, and local schools couldn’t meet his educational needs. As a qualified teacher, Berry decided to homeschool him instead. Dan made such good progress that other parents asked Berry to teach their dyslexic children too. After four years, the table wasn’t big enough, so parents launched a campaign to raise funds for a new specialist school. This opened in 1990, in the grounds of Belmont School in Holmbury St Mary, near Dorking. To help students progress to secondary school, Berry and husband David purchased Burys Court Prep School, which became Moon Hall School Reigate in 2005. A decision was made by the Governors to relocate all provisions to Moon Hall Reigate. Today, we have about 200 students with an extensive waiting list.

Who do you teach?

The child’s primary need must be dyslexia.

Moon Hall has over 40 years’ experience, we understand children with dyslexia and how to support them. It is common for someone with dyslexia to have co-occurring neurodevelopment conditions including ADHD, dyspraxia (impacting co-ordination and balance), dyscalculia (maths difficulties) autism, or speech and language difficulties.

We accept children with these co-occurring difficulties, but dyslexia must be the primary need.

What challenges do dyslexic children face in mainstream schools?

I received a good education at a state school, as have my children, and I previously served as a governor of a mainstream school.

For most, the education provided is very good.

However, they typically have classes of 30 students, and perhaps 20% of these have neurodiverse conditions. How can one teacher, maybe with one assistant, meet the needs of the entire class? It’s not possible.

Supporting the 20% would have a negative impact on the progress of the other 80%.

While I welcome additional funding to help mainstream schools support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through personalised learning programmes and inclusive environments, the one change that would make a difference would be smaller class sizes. Our admission reports from mainstream schools about a prospective student always cite similar points: Child struggling to concentrate, can’t keep still, are not interested in learning and are disruptive to others. That is usually because the child’s own needs are not being met.

What is different at Moon Hall?

Students are supported by specialist teachers in much smaller classes. We also put accommodations in place to prevent behavioural issues or attention difficulties, so that children are comfortable and focused. Around the school, you’ll find wobble cushions and gym balls. We have standing desks to aid learning and plan movement breaks to release energy and maintain alertness. We enjoy activities on Friday afternoons, so children head home for the weekend feeling happy and relaxed.

We also have Buzz, our therapy dog, who is much-loved by the children. I wish more decision makers would visit to see what can be achieved with the right funding, resources and ambition.

Are parents reluctant to place children in specialist school?

There can be a stigma around neurodiversity, although hopefully less than there used to be.

Most parents of children with neurodiversity trust their school or special educational needs co-ordinator to do what’s right for them and their child. However, struggling children often stay in mainstream education for too long, in the hope things will improve. Things often unravel at secondary school and they may even become school refusers. We provide a supportive environment underpinned by the basic values of kindness, inclusion, nurture, perseverance and aspiration.

Does Moon Hall produce strong results?

We do have outstanding performers achieving grades 7+ in many subjects, but for some children, achieving a grade 3 can be an equally amazing result. What is most important is how much they have progressed

and the opportunities we create for them. If I was Education Secretary, I would dispose of the current exam-based system, as it restricts creativity in favour of those who can easily recall information. An adult speaking at a conference is not asked to recite facts and figures off by heart. They use notes, cue cards, or PowerPoint presentations. Yet we ask children to recall everything they’ve ever learned in a three-hour exam, which is absurd.

It is in these subjects that our students can showcase their skills and creativity. So, it’s a hybrid model. They will wear the same uniform, attend assemblies and enjoys sports day together, and enjoy all the benefits that come from belonging to the wider school community.

Yet many people with dyslexia achieve great things…

Research suggests that about 40% of selfmade millionaires in the UK are dyslexic.

People with dyslexia are excellent problemsolvers, as traditional methods of learning don’t work for them, so they find alternative pathways. That is the mindset of the entrepreneur who finds a more efficient way of doing something and breaks convention.

Many successful people, from Richard Branson and Steven Spielberg to Lewis Hamilton and Keira Knightley, have dyslexia.

They often possess tenacity and resilience, which is key to their success. Sadly, a more negative statistic is that about half of offenders in UK prisons have literacy or numeracy difficulties. This shows what happens when we fail to help people during the early stages of development and provide early intervention.

Where do Moon Hall students come from?

Like with many specialist schools, some students may travel quite a distance each day, as there is no provision near them that can give the same support. We have 12 minibuses that transport children to school, including a service that operates in Horsham and Southwater. About 70% of our students have an Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP), with their education funded by the local authority. Any families whose child has an EHCP who doesn’t feel their needs can be met in a mainstream school are very welcome at our next Open Day. We also offer bursaries, providing means-tested support to families for diagnostic assessments, and have our own assessment centre, run by HCPC-registered psychologists and therapists, at Moon Hall Reigate, with plans to extend this to Copthorne. We offer assessments for Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, OT, SALT and behavioural Optometry.

PENFRIENDS SALLY WRIGHT OVERSEES THE SAFETY OF LOCAL SWANS Sally Wright

Sally Wright has rescued dozens of swans and other water birds in the Horsham District. Having founded Southwater and Horsham Swan Rescue, Sally helps protect one of the UK’s most elegant native species. AAH met Sally by the banks of Warnham Mill Pond to find out more…

How did you become a swan rescuer?

I’ve lived in Southwater for nearly 25 years and regularly walk around the Country Park.

As an animal lover, I would often stop to feed the swans and other water birds on the lake.

Four years ago, I spotted a swan stuck in the ice during a harsh winter. Swans are usually strong enough to break free, but I knew this particular bird had a wing injury. After it had been stuck for some time, I became concerned. The fire service wouldn’t intervene and I didn’t know who else to call.

I was quite prepared to jump in to try and save it myself, but then I heard about the Swan Sanctuary. That was how my journey as a volunteer rescuer began.

What happened to that swan?

Danni Rogers, who volunteers for Swans & Friends Bird Rescue in Copthorne and also the more widely-known Swan Sanctuary, visited the Country Park. No sooner had he arrived than the rain came, softened the ice and allowed the bird to free itself naturally.

He was surprised I had stayed at the scene, as most people’s involvement ends with a phone call. Within a month, the same swan had a fishing hook caught in its bill, so I called Danni again. He was having to travel from Camberley, as there was no dedicated swan rescue volunteer in the Horsham District at the time. He felt I had the passion and empathy required, so I established Southwater and Horsham Swan Rescue, later becoming a volunteer rescuer for the Swan Sanctuary too.

What is the Swan Sanctuary?

The sanctuary is based in Shepperton, Middlesex, and is one of the oldest swan charities in the UK. It is on 24-hour alert, 365 days a year, and when a distress call is made, a local rescuer responds as quickly as

trouble. Another busy period is when eggs start to hatch, as the first few weeks of a cygnet’s life are perilous with foxes, rats, herons, crows, gulls and even pike posing a threat.

What problems do year-old cygnets face?

It is a confusing time for them, as having been nurtured for almost a year, they suddenly find themselves being chased away by their own parents. Some cygnets find another waterway, as they’ve been taught how to fly properly. They may have already flown at height and perhaps even flown with their parents to another lake.

However, at Southwater Country Park, the resident swans are 19 (wild swans typically live around 20 years) and their cygnets are not shown how to fly long distances. Also, the lake lacks the space swans need to hone their landing and take-off techniques. Swans are like jumbo jets – they need a long runway! Some cygnets that have never flown properly fail to attain enough height to find other waterways, often landing in adjacent fields or even busy roads.

Are you nervous when approaching a swan?

They can hiss all they like, but I‘ve never been nervous about them injuring me. The important thing is to approach with confidence and handle them carefully, without causing injury or distress.

Sometimes it helps to lure them into shallow water with food, and as the swan dunks its head, hold the crook of their neck, rather than higher up, which is more fragile. You shouldn’t pull on a bird’s wing, but they will use them as a defensive measure. As a swan’s wingspan concertinas out to two metres, you need to hold the body tightly to ensure they can’t use them against you.

possible. The sanctuary has trained me to handle birds correctly and deal with difficult situations – such as removing fishing hooks and line – and how to help with their rehabilitation. I also volunteer for Swan Lifeline, a charity devoted to the care of swans in the Thames Valley.

Is this a full-time role?

I work for Paragon Bank and they’re very supportive of my voluntary work, allowing me to respond quickly to incidents. Being employed helps fund a lot of what I do, as the sanctuary receives no government funding. So, I can afford to provide swans with the care they need, especially those I rehabilitate at home. It’s expensive, but I don’t mind as swans are my passion.

What was your first solo rescue?

A swan was chased away from Rockwood Golf Course and landed on the A24. It caused long queues and I upset other motorists by cutting through the traffic! The police asked me what I was doing, but when I explained my role, were happy for me to transport the injured bird to the Swan Sanctuary.

Swan’s nest in early spring, with eggs normally hatching in May or June. So, from December to February, the cob (male) and pen (female) start preparing for a new brood and chase away the previous year’s cygnets, who then have to fend for themselves. This is a busy time for rescuers, as many cygnets find

Do you work alone?

I’m part of a network, so know lots of rescuers in the region. In certain situations, everyone pulls together. Sometimes, we even go out in kayaks to check on a swan or lure it towards the bank, and on occasions I’ve waded in to help an injured bird. I regularly work alongside Clare Hill, who looks after swans on Tilgate Lake, and there are other many animal lovers who live locally and enjoy feeding the birds. I couldn’t do my job without them, as they call me when something isn’t right.

Can you identify the swans you rescue?

I know most of the resident swans in the Horsham District, but we “ring” any swan we find without one. Identification rings on their legs helps to identify birds and monitor their movements. The ringing is carried out at a flock lake in Redhill by Jake Everitt, Countryside and Ecology Manager at Horsham District Council. Jake is an accredited British Trust for Ornithology ringer, and demonstrates bird ringing as part of his conservation work.

He does a huge amount for local wildlife and has given me great support too.

What happens to the birds you rescue?

Sometimes I care for them at home, if they just need time to rehabilitate. On one occasion, a swan had been rescued from Tilgate Park, covered in mud and utterly exhausted. It didn’t have any injuries and just needed food, rest and recuperation. Cygnets that have been chased away by their parents cannot return home, so are often taken to the flock lake in Redhill, which is currently home to about 45 swans. There, they have space to recover and many meet their partner on the lake. Mature

swans may be relocated to private lakes, with permission of the landowner, or released on the River Adur. There is often a flock around Shoreham Harbour, although many find their way up-river to tranquil spots around Bramber, Henfield and Partridge Green.

Do you see many human-inflicted injuries?

Most incidents relate to natural behaviour, like a cygnet being chased away, or a swan being hurt in a territorial battle. Just last month, Arthur – a cob who was paired with Martha at Rookwood – died. That was probably due to a territorial dispute. There are occasionally incidents where swans have been hit with catapults or pellet guns. My concern is, if

children are doing this at 13, what will they do next? Fortunately, we haven’t encountered many such incidents in the last few years.

Managing a child’s myopia: a parent’s essential guide Childhood myopia, also commonly known as short-sightedness, is an eye condition that is becoming increasingly common.

The condition impacts a child’s vision, by making it difficult to see objects far away clearly, which an lead to difficulties at school or at home.

What is myopia?

Myopia is also known as near-sightedness or short-sightedness. In a myopic eye, light is focused at a point in front of the retina, meaning the image that falls on the retina is blurred. This means that if your child is myopic, they can see close objects easily – like reading a book or looking at a phone – but things at a distance, such as words on a whiteboard or on the TV, will look blurry.

Regular eye tests are vital in spotting the signs of myopia early and can help slow its progression. To work out how short/ long-sighted your child is, our opticians will shine a light into their eyes – this is called retinoscopy.

Can myopia in children be reversed?

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina (marked by X) instead of on it, making distant objects appear blurred.

What are the signs my child has myopia?

The most common symptoms of myopia are blurred vision, eye strain, squinting or headaches. If your child is complaining that their eyes are feeling tired, or they’re having trouble seeing into the distance, they might be suffering from myopia. You can also keep an eye out for other easy-to-spot symptoms, like excessive blinking, eye rubbing or clumsiness.

Although myopia is not something that can be reversed, Specsavers now offers an advanced lens which not only improves vision, but is also designed to slow down the progression of myopia in a child’s eyesight.

This type of lens technology is referred to as

‘myopia management’ and is available in both glasses and contact lenses. Clinical studies have also shown that the lenses can slow down the rate of myopia in children by up to 60%.

What can you do for a child with myopia?

There are a few everyday tips you can follow to help your child if they have myopia.

1. Make sure they’re spending time outside, at least two hours a day ideally.

2. Try and limit their screen time.

3. Make sure they’re not holding books too close to their eyes.

4. Try and ensure they get a good night’s sleep!

THE SUSSEX SUNDAY WALKERS ENJOY CENTENARY WALK

Sussex Sunday Walkers in Cranleigh (©Martin Bamford) Sussex Sunday Walkers (SSW) celebrated its centenary by recreating the group’s inaugural walk at the end of March.

Although many founder members lived and worked in Horsham, the first walk taken by the group – which was originally called The Society of Sussex Wealdmen – was a 12-mile route in the Surrey Hills on 28 March 1926.

Current members wore 1920s clothing as they embarked on a similar route from Shamley Green to Shere on Sunday 29 March. As the Sussex Wealdmen had caught a motor bus from Shere to Dorking Station before boarding the train back to Horsham in 1926, the Sussex Sunday Walkers also travelled on a vintage bus at the end of the centenary walk.

Gaynor Waterman, Chair of SSW, said: ‘The Wealdmen often travelled from Horsham to their starting point of their walks by train on the Steyning Line or Cranleigh Line, both of which are now closed. Many walks

took in the Surrey Hills and the Low Weald between the North and South Downs, and the group’s motto ‘Sylva Anderida’ is derived from a vast ancient forest which once spanned the region. Although their first walk was shorter, they would regularly walk up to 20 miles, exploring the trails and footpaths of Sussex and Surrey.

‘The name was changed in 2016, not only to reflect a more inclusive society, but also to survive in the internet age. For all of its history, an online search for ‘Sussex walking groups’ wouldn’t point people to The Society of Sussex Wealdmen. However, as it did a century ago, the society still heads out every Sunday, no matter what the weather, which helps foster camaraderie. We say there’s no such thing as bad weather – only bad clothing! So, we head out in rain, hail, even snow, and it has only been flooding that has stopped us.

How to make mortgage applications run smooth If you are applying for a mortgage, it is easy to assume that once your application is submitted, the hard work is done. In reality, this is where the process really begins...

While some applications move through smoothly, others can become more complex, depending on how the case is presented, which lender is chosen, and how the application is managed throughout.

where they have local knowledge and can carry out a recce in advance, plotting a route on OS maps and making sure the walk is safe and accessible. It’s not uncommon for old routes to be altered by new developments or to become wild and overgrown.

‘Meetings of the Long-Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) typically follow routes of around 20 miles at a fast pace, while rambling groups usually enjoy walks under 10 miles. SSW is pitched somewhere in-between, with walks from 12 to 16 miles. We always stop for a tea break and go to a pub for lunch, although many members prefer to take their own food and order just a drink. It’s a full day out, usually finishing by 4pm.

‘Partly due to our origins, there’s still a strong contingent of walkers from Horsham, particularly in the south of the District around Billingshurst, Pulborough and Storrington. We now have close to 100 members, attracting people from far and wide, with walks held in East and West Sussex, edging towards the Kent and Hampshire borders, as well as in the north around the Surrey Hills.’

THE STICK MEN The Society of Sussex Wealdmen was founded by seven members of the Horsham Branch of the Commons and Footpaths Preservation Society (CFPS). Its first committee meeting was held in Horsham Town Hall on 3 November 1926, with E.G Apedaile, who lived in a flat above the gentleman’s outfitters at 32 West Street, appointed first Chairman.

Walks were held about once a month, with walkers often reaching their the starting point via public transport. In September 1929, 32 members were joined by 47 walkers from the Connoisseurs Club on, creating a Society record for a single walk that is yet to be beaten.

A few years later, the ‘stick competition’ began, with a walking stick awarded to the lady and gentleman attending the most walks in a year.

During the early war years, when transport was limited, walks were held fortnightly within a 10-mile radius of Horsham. However, walks further afield were back on the programme card by 1943 and trains were used again in 1944. During the 1950s, the Society worked closely with the Ramblers Association and Sussex Pathfinders to record all the

Multiple checks take place behind the scenes, and the way an application is prepared and managed can have a direct impact on the outcome. Understanding the mortgage process, and having the right support in place, can help ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible from the initial application right through to completion.

rights of way being walked in Sussex. In 1960, the Society clocked up its 10,000th mile, while a Footpath Secretary was introduced to the committee. During the 1960s, many rural rail lines were closed (the Steyning Line was a victim of the “Beeching Axe”), but the group continued to publish Horsham or Crawley stations as meeting points for walks until 1992. From then onwards, the group met at a designated start point. The 1990s also saw an increase in lady members, which later helped prompt a name change, with the group becoming Sussex Sunday Walkers in 2016.

Gaynor said: ‘It’s interesting that the group was formed not only to encourage walking as a pastime, but also to help keep rightsof-way open. Even in the 1920s, local ramblers were aware of the importance of preserving and protecting footpaths for future generations.

‘Despite the Society’s name, women joined in with walks from the beginning and often outnumbered men. A diary belonging to Doris Rice was donated to us after she passed away. Doris kept a written account of the Society’s walks for several years from May 1926 and took some wonderful photos, which show that many women joined husbands or partners on walks.

‘It has always been a friendly and sociable group and – after a period of fluctuating membership– we have grown to almost 100 members. We also enjoy an annual long weekend, organised through HF Holidays (formerly Holiday Fellowship), a Christian organisation that operates 16 country houses around the UK and focuses on walking and community groups. Also, to celebrate our centenary, we are walking the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne over eight Sundays, from April to September.

‘I have my own favourite places to walk, including Lord’s Piece near Fittleworth.

However, we are very lucky to have on our doorstep many beautiful areas, such as the South Downs Way, Surrey Hills and the south coast. We are spoilt for choice, and of course, we don’t have to go far to find a good pub, which helps!’

The performance featured numbers from a wide range of musicals, from Guys & Dolls to Chicago, as the Society celebrated its 70th anniversary. With The Capitol closed for refurbishment, HAODS are entertaining audiences elsewhere, with April’s visit to Christ’s Hospital followed by The Tempest in Barns Green in May. Louise Wright, Production Manager for Eras, said: ‘We wanted to present a concert to mark 70 years of HAODS, but these are challenging times, as we are searching for a rehearsal space. We have been meeting at the former Ambulance Station on Hurst Road, but need to vacate the premises by October. Also, with The Capitol closed, we are having to perform at venues outside of town and therefore cannot stage costly productions that require new costumes and props.

‘So, we decided to produce Eras to ensure that we can still come together and let others know we’re still here and are always open to new members of all ages, whether their interest lies on stage or backstage.

HOME SEARCH The society has been unable to find a permanent home since the closure of the old Broadbridge Heath Sports Centre in 2018, when there was no room for HAODS House – which included rehearsal space and storage for costumes and props – in the replacement leisure centre at The Bridge. Although it didn’t offer quite the same comforts, the Ambulance Station has sufficed, but now HAODS is searching for a new home once more.

Louise said: ‘These are challenging times and many amateur dramatics societies are struggling. We’re all counting the pennies and people will naturally prioritise paying for petrol or bills over going to the theatre.

following to help maintain momentum, but for older generations, it’s difficult to travel out of town to venues like Christ’s Hospital.

‘Now we face losing our home, but hopefully we can find somewhere soon. We have a wonderful society that offers opportunities to people of all ages, including young people through Junior HAODS. So, hopefully we can secure our future so the next generation can enjoy amateur theatre too.’

STAR PRESIDENTS Eras included a range of songs spanning the Society’s long history. The group was founded by amateur actors who had met at an evening class at the old Oxford Road School in Horsham, where they performed Gilbert and Sullivan plays. Several members wanted to perform a wider range of plays and musicals, so formed Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (HAODS).

After performing Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, The Desert Song was its first musical in 1954.

Having initially rented rehearsal space at the Station Hotel, HAODS moved into a Nissen hut on a former Army Bomb Disposal site at Broadbridge Heath in 1973. When Tesco redeveloped the site in the 1980s, the group moved into HAODS House, within the new sports centre. Shows were performed at the old Capitol Theatre (where M&S is located today), before moving to The Ritz Cinema in North Street, which was later re-named, firstly as Horsham Arts Centre and then The Capitol in 2003. Only during times of development have HAODS performed shows elsewhere, including Christ’s Hospital and The Drill Hall.

Yvonne Chadwell has been a member for 40 years, directing countless productions, while Howard Collis joined over 50 years ago.

He said: ‘I first appeared in the 1976 production of Fiddler on the Roof and I’m still here 50 years later. It really does feel like a family, with a welcoming environment. That’s why HAODS continues to be so popular.’

SISTERS ACT Eras told the story of HAODS through music, with Act One featuring classic songs by the likes of Gilbert and Sullivan, Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Act Two’s highlights came from 20th and early 21st century musicals, such as Chess, Hairspray 60 HAODS

Jackie Shepherd and Sister Act. As well as classic songs from The Sound of Music and a Lloyd-Webber medley, sisters Becca, Alice, Jess and Ellie (née Attfield) performed together for the first time at a HAODS show.

Alice Rowell said: ‘I remember we watched a HAODS production of Calamity Jane together in 2007 and thought it was fantastic. Becca auditioned for the next show, The King and I, while I joined the junior cast. I’ve been involved ever since, landing my first lead role last year, as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors.

We all have strengths and weaknesses. I feel I’m quite a good singer and dancer, but have had to work on my acting. HAODS has given me the opportunity to do that and I was so grateful for the chance to take on a lead role, as performing is what I love to do.

‘All of my closest friends are here and, of course, being able to perform Sisters, from Irving Berlin’s musical White Christmas, alongside all of my sisters, is wonderful.

Amazingly, this is the first time that all four of us have performed on stage at the same time.

I must confess that the first time we rehearsed, we had to try very hard not laugh!’

YOUNG TALENT Sisters had an extra special meaning for the oldest of the sisters, Becca. In 2015, Martin Bracewell interrupted HAODS’ production of White Christmas for an on-stage proposal. The couple now have two children, with their son expressing an interest in learning the ropes backstage, while their three-year-old daughter is itching to tread the boards.

While some HAODS’ productions require young cast members (such as Annie), there is also a HAODS’ Juniors group for children aged 7 – 15. They rehearse every week, focusing on singing, acting and dancing, with a show held every summer.

Martin said: ‘HAODS’ Juniors is rewarding, with adult members helping to run the group.

Last year, they performed Out of the Woods at The Capitol. It was a great opportunity to demonstrate to our young members the full scope of a large production, both on stage and backstage. It is costly, but gives them the chance to develop skills in a unique environment. They gain confidence too, as they engage with people of all ages. Children that come to us as shy and nervous now perform lead roles on stage, and it’s lovely

to see them develop confidence and social skills. Some first joined as children for adult productions of shows like Annie, and have grown up to become important members of the Society.’

Becky Munden was pregnant with son Elliot when she played the lead in Hello, Dolly! in 2014. In Eras, they shared the stage once again, with Elliot appearing in numbers including Tradition (from Fiddler on the Roof) and Good Morning Baltimore (Hairspray).

Becky said: ‘Elliot joined the cast of our 2025 production of Scrooge and has since become a member of HAODS’ Juniors. I wasn’t sure if he would like performing on stage, but he loves it and it is wonderful for his confidence. I would encourage more boys to join, especially if they’ve not yet found a social outlet outside of school. It sounds like a cliché, but there really is a family feel to HAODS. Elliot’s godparents are in the company and I’m a godmother to other cast members’ children, so this is like my second family!’

Mithu said: ‘After moving to Horsham in 2024, we saw the incredible HAODS production of The Addams Family. Not everyone joins as a youngster. Jonathan Wharton first attended at the age of 45 and in now a key member, as like many amateur dramatics societies, HAODS has fewer leading men than leading ladies.

He said: ‘I did drama at school and university and always loved it, but work commitments meant I didn’t continue.

Having loved watching my daughter perform on the stage for a number of years, I decided to get back involved in amateur dramatics.

I watched Scrooge and was sure that HAODS would be a good fit. I was nervous, as I hadn’t performed in over 20 years and turned up for the first time only two weeks before auditions for the next show! But everyone was very welcoming. HAODS has had a huge impact on my life and now – as well as mid-week rehearsals – I attend the extra Sunday sessions too, as I enjoy the company and want to perform to the best of my abilities.’

EDITOR’SNOTES Ben Morris reflects on the challenges facing the nation’s pubs

coupled with taxes on alcohol, meant that “without change, sadly many more pubs will disappear.”

Traditionally, media outlets report first on the celebrations in Australia, then 12-hours later come images of fireworks exploding over Big Ben or the London Eye. Due to the Bondi Beach terror attacks, Australian festivities were understandably muted last year, so the world instead turned its attention to little Kiribati, which is the first nation to welcome in a New Year.

And this month, we feature two pubs that are not only free houses, but also rely on their locality to attract customers. The Blue Ship, a family-run pub in The Haven, capitalises on its tranquil location by operating a no-frills campsite in an adjacent field. This attracts weekend campers from far afield seeking out a traditional pub (The Blue Ship has one of the last remaining service hatches in England).

The owners have adjusted its opening times accordingly, closing up for winter.

However, The Guardian published a more interesting article on New Year’s Eve, with the headline ‘One pub a day closed permanently in England and Wales in 2025.’

It was actually one pub – or a Leap Year – away from being the perfect headline, with data showing that 366 pubs had been demolished or converted for other uses in 2025. While a startling statistic, the rate of pub closures actually slowed down last year, as nearly 2,000 have shut in total over the past five years.

If you’re a regular reader and have thumbed through this edition in the orderly fashion that the editor intended, you’ll know that running a pub can be a constant battle for survival.

In March’s edition, Regan Howard (owner of The Rising Sun in Nutbourne) described how the rising cost of food ingredients and wages,

for the loss of some pubs. In 2000, there were around 500 breweries, whereas now (according to figures by the SIBA UK Brewery Tracker) there are about 1,715.

Many of these are small, independent craft breweries that attract a different kind of punter who enjoys sampling small-batch brews, often in a rustic or industrial setting, with a street food vendor rather than an in-house kitchen. Quirkily-titled tipples might even be served by the brewer themselves, before being sipped slowly, with an aromatic backdrop of fermenting yeast and pungent hops.

We also visit The Sportsman in Amberley, a historic pub which was likely going to be converted into a residential property before local campaigners raised the funds to buy it.

One of the new committee’s first aims is to extend the viewing areas that overlook the majestic Amberley Wild Brooks. There’s a recognition that bird twitchers seeking out the white-tailed eagle might just revive the pub’s fortunes.

Also in this edition, we feature Brolly Brewing, a micro-brewery owned by Brook and Holly Saunders. There’s always a lively buzz at the Brolly Taproom, located on Redkiln industrial Estate in Horsham, and the Taproom is now complemented by a second unit dedicated to live music. Elsewhere in the District, other independents including Firebird Brewing, Kissingate and Horsham Brewery have created their own unique environment.

All of which suggests that we do still want to support our local pubs, but with money being tight, are seeking something else from the experience.

Keeping the doors open may always be challenging for a public house, free house or brewery Taproom. However, perhaps those that are most at risk are those least adaptable to change – the brewery-owned pubs still trying to survive on a “pint of Carling and a bag of pork scratchings” drinking culture that belonged to a different generation.

Have you noticed that there has been a recent increase in the Asian population in Horsham?

Many new arrivals are from Hong Kong. My husband and I lived in Hong Kong for two and a half years and came to not only love the territory, but also develop a great respect for the Hong Kong people. So, when some of them joined the congregation at Kingdom Faith Church, which we attend in Horsham, we were naturally drawn to them.

For the Chinese, the Year of the Horse, which began on 17 February, symbolises speed, energy and freedom. Interestingly, the name “Horsham” originates from an Old English term meaning “home/settlement of horses” reflecting the town’s early importance as a centre for horse trading and grazing.

An early priority for new arrivals is to prepare for the Life in the UK Test. To help them, we run a weekly ‘British Life Cafe’ at Kingdom Faith Church in Foundry Lane. It runs most Monday mornings from 10am - 12pm. We look at one test question, which is researched before we come together over coffee to share fascinating discussions around the subject matter. This helps forge relationships between local residents and the Hongkongers, encourages language development and offers newcomers a chance to grasp many British cultural and historical intricacies.

We also organise other events including BBQs, walks and teas, giving the Hongkongers an opportunity to become acquainted with each other and the locals. Recently, we celebrated Chinese New Year in the church with over 60 Chinese in attendance, with games, songs, food and lots of fun.

As Kingdom Faith is a Christian church, we decided to run a monthly bilingual service.

Again, this is an opportunity for local residents to connect with the Christians coming from Hong Kong. According to official figures, about 167,000 Hongkongers have moved to the UK since 2021, the majority taking advantage of the British National Overseas (BNO) visa route.

On 23 January, a group of British residents and HK Chinese living in the Horsham area met with Horsham’s MP John Milne to discuss proposed major reforms to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). We were pleasantly surprised when he raised the issue during a speech in Parliament on 2 February. 2

The café forges relationships between Hongkongers and locals, and offers newcomers a chance to grasp British cultural intricacies.

Mr Milne said: ‘I met 30 or so members of the Hong Kong community in Horsham. These people are professionals: they are teachers, students, engineers, doctors, business owners and directors. They are in work, paying tax, buying homes, raising families and contributing to local life. They came here legally. They came because the British Government made them a promise. In talking to them, what struck me most was not anger but fear; fear that the basis on which they uprooted their lives is now shifting beneath them.

‘In Horsham, nearly 90% of BNO households are homeowners. Clearly, they are not a drain on public resources and are financially stable, yet some will nevertheless struggle to meet

the new income threshold. Many cannot simply earn more to bridge the gap, and others will take time to move into higher-paid work and transfer their skills and qualifications. Will the Government consider taking account of assets and long-term stability – not earned income alone – when assessing ILR applications for Hong Kong BNOs? ‘My constituents are also deeply concerned about the English language requirement. Four in five of them say that they are worried about passing the exam, and they are people who seemed quite fluent when I spoke to them.

Obviously this affects older applicants in particular.

‘These families moved across the world on a promise from the British Government, and there is now a genuine risk that that promise will be broken. My asks from the Minister are straightforward: exempt Hong Kong BNOs from the new earned settlement criteria, provide transitional protections for those already on the five-year settlement pathway, and assess household income, not individual income, to keep families together.’

By 6 March, the Home Office appeared to have exempted BNO Hong Kong visa holders from the new B2 English language requirement for settlement applications (as reported by Hongkongwatch.org).
