The June 2019 cover features Paul and Nicola Bennett of Pilgrim Motorsports in Henfield.

We enjoyed our visit to Pilgrim and wanted a shot that included the two cars predominantly associated with the business. Namely, the Cobra and Mustang.

There were half a dozen Mustangs parked outside, but the Cobra was driven out of the garage to serve as a backdrop! You’ll see from the stripe pattern that it’s not the same one we’re pretending to clean on the facing page...

Other contenders for the front included a picture of Horsham Ladies rugby player Lizzie Lloyd and clock maker Stephen Jackman.

Notes from the Editor

Horsham’s Custard Pie & Pancake Legend The name John Le Rossignol may not be familiar to you, but you might well have attended one of the countless events he has organised.

John has been a driving force behind Funday Sunday and Horsham Pancake Races, as well as charities like Set4Success, which provides support for leading young sportsmen and women in the Horsham District.

He is a larger than life character; a perfect fit for a ‘My Story’ feature in AAH. I’ve asked him about it many times, but he’s always played down his achievements. After hearing that John has only weeks to live (he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer some years ago), I phoned him up. I asked if he wouldn’t mind if I wrote a few words...

Our friendship started from a disagreement.

Years ago, when I was editor of The Resident, I was critical of Kidz Stuff, an event he helped organised in Horsham Park. It culminated in a brilliant world-record breaking custard pie fight, but I felt that Kidz Stuff had otherwise been disappointing. John felt my article had been too harsh on the fledgling event.

That wasn’t the only time we didn’t see eyeto-eye. I was delivering the very first AAH in May 2011 when I bumped into John at a Royal wedding street party. He welcomed me into

his home and - in front of several guests - said that I was making a huge mistake in leaving The Resident to start a magazine. “AAH will never work!” he said. He later apologised, but John is such an amiable, well-meaning man that I never really minded!

We became friends and occasionally meet for lunch at The Green Man in Partridge Green.

He has similarly close links with other local editors as he understands the role we play in promoting Horsham Rotary events. In fact, at the launch of Horsham’s Year of Culture, John insisted on grouping me with Davey Pearson (District Post) and Blaise Tapp (WSCT) for a photo. We all reluctantly smiled, as it was him!

A good community needs people like John.

They don’t do things for personal profit or political gain, yet they inject a little bit of magic, creating a better place for us all to live.

The sort of place where businesses host ‘Trick or Treat’ for kids at Halloween (this is down to John and his friends at Horsham Rotary) or put elephants painted by artists in shop windows (he was the talisman for this too).

When I last spoke to John in person, he was lobbying hard to secure a small slice of the money set aside for the Year of Culture, to ensure that Funday Sunday (the popular free family event he organises) went ahead as planned in Horsham Park. So, when I heard

that Horsham District Council had lost about ten times the amount he had asked it for by cancelling its own so-called “showpiece event”, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry!

I’m sure that if John Le Rossignol was organising the staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Knepp Castle, it wouldn’t have ended with an embarrassing loss of taxpayer’s money. Lots of it...

I won’t dwell on that, as I’d be delving into political territory and the man himself wouldn’t care much for that. But knowing what John can put together on a shoestring budget, I can only imagine what he could achieve with a massive, self-assigned bounty. My guess is that it would involve thousands of children having fun whilst getting very messy at an event that would have made the front pages of the local papers. He’d have seen to that.

There would have been prizes donated by a town centre business for the kid in the best fancy dress, probably presented by Dave Benson Phillips in a pair of wacky red trousers.

John just has that knack of pulling the right people together.

The vibrant, warm sense of community in Horsham is down to us all. But John Le Rossignol of Mannings Heath has given a little bit more than the rest of us.

One Boxing Day match between Dick, Kerr Ladies and St Helens Ladies at Goodison Park was watched by a crowd of 53,000, with 14,000 more unable to get into the ground. However, the Football Association soon outlawed the game, deeming it unsuitable for females.

Horsham District voters went to the polls on Thursday 2 May, with the count taking place at Bluecoat Sports Centre, Christ's Hospital.

Voters elected 48 district councillors, up from 44 in the last local elections after a boundary review was carried out. Bramber and Steyning Parish Councils also held elections. Average turnout at the elections for District Councillors was 35.1%.

Horsham’s first Comedy Open Mic Night takes place at The Anchor Hotel, Market Square, Horsham on Wednesday 5 June.

Horsham Artists Open Studios (HAOS) hosts its annual Art Trail on 8 - 9 June and 15 - 16 June.

Horsham artist Hannah Stewart has created a life-size bronze statue of footballing trailblazer Lily Parr for the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Parr played for Dick, Kerr Ladies, a team comprised of workers at a munitions factory in Preston and one of the earliest women’s teams in England. She later played for Preston Ladies. In a 32-year career that started in 1919, Parr scored 980 goals and

Horsham Football Club won promotion to the Bostik Premier Division after a 2-1 victory over Ashford United at Culver Road, Lancing, on Friday 3 May. A crowd of 880 watched the play-off final as Horsham triumphed to return to the Bostik Premier for the first time since 2012. A stunning half-volley by George Hayward gave the Hornets the lead, before Sam Corne equalised for Ashford from the penalty spot. Horsham Rugby Club has also enjoyed great success this season, gaining promotion to London 1 South.

A crowd in excess of 600 cheered on the green and whites in a play-off match on Saturday 13 April, between the sides finishing runners-up in the London 2 SE and London 2 SW leagues. Horsham ran out comfortable 44-17 winners with tries from Jack Osgood (2), Declan Nwachukwu, Sam Hampson and Joe Wilde. Jonathan Whiting was named man of the match.

Saturday 22nd June 2019 8pm St John the Evangelist RC Church 3 Springfield Road, Horsham RH12 2PJ Horsham Twinning Association hosted 33 guests from the twin town of Lage, Germany in May. The group enjoyed an interesting tour around the Houses of Parliament, courtesy of Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, as well as a walk around tourist sites of London.

They also visited the Great British Weekend in Horsham and Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, before travelling to Brighton. There was a welcome dinner at Roffey Park Institute, where the Association welcomed Horsham councillors Peter Burgess and Jonathan Chowen, with a concert by the Pleasure Singers. Strong links have been maintained with Lage since the formation of the Association in 1985.

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens in Lower Beeding hosts a Summer Concert Series as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019.

Chanctonbury Playschool in Ashington has a new children's allotment and play area, thanks partly to help from Old Barn Nurseries in Dial Post.

Fruit trees, fencing, compost and other gardening supplies were donated by Old Barn to the charity-run playschool.

This is just one of a number of special gardening projects supported by Clive Gravett from The Budding Foundation.

He will be returning to help with another project at the playschool, involving living willow sculptures. Old Barn Nurseries is also planning to host a charity grotto for The Budding Foundation.

Horsham District Council has recruited four Neighbourhood Wardens for the Horsham District.

Dominic Woodhead and Jacquie Cave are the new warden team for Southwater and Chris Poore and Andy Cotton are wardens for Storrington & Sullington.

They join the existing team of 10 wardens based in Ashington, Billingshurst, Horsham Town, Pulborough and Steyning/Bramber/Upper Beeding.

The 21st annual Storrington Duck Race, hosted by The Friends of Storrington Primary School, took place on Sunday 12 May. Author Julia Donaldson CBE was the special guest and started the first race. Julia is best known for popular rhyming stories including The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Stick Man. The duck race was keenly contested, with the top ten ducks in each of the six heats entering the grand final.

The JubyLee Bakes team celebrate the funding

JubyLee Bakes has secured £50,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund People’s Projects.

The Horsham business, run by young adults with learning disabilities, attracted 4,878 votes in a competition held to find worthy causes - the highest amount of any applicant in the UK. This funding will allow JubyLee Bakes to create its own kitchen in Thakeham.

Horsham Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Concert will be held at The Capitol on Saturday 29 June, at 7.30pm.

The concert features Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis (for strings) and Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy (for wind and brass). The orchestra

then perform the world premiere of Adriano Adewale’s Percussion Concerto, with the composer as soloist. After the interval, the orchestra perform Bartok’s folk-inspired Dance Suite.

St Mary's Church in Horsham hosts its annual Flower Festival on 13 - 16 June.

The theme of the festival is Diversity, using flowers to interpret local culture, from beekeeping to bell ringing, local artists and composers, historic schools and Horsham's twin towns.

The opening concert by St Mary's Church Choir is on Wednesday 12 June, 7:30pm.

It is followed by a preview of the flower arrangements. The Parish Church of St. Mary's is also joining in with the HAOS Art Trail on 15 -16 June, with four artists exhibiting work in the church. Don’t confuse the above with the event at St Mary’s Church, The Street, Thakeham, which hosts its Flower Festival & Open Gardens on 14 - 16 June, from 10am - 5pm each day.

This year’s theme is ‘Walk on the Wild Side’. St Mary’s hosts flower displays on Friday 14 June, followed by evening entertainment in the Village Hall, including an Auction of Promises with Rupert Toovey.

Memorial Plaque at Coolham Airfield

There will be a Remembrance walk at Coolham Airfield on Sunday 9 June to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day. All are welcome to stroll around the World War Two airfield and remember the sacrifices made by those serving there during its short but active existence. 174 pilots were stationed at Coolham Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) with 15 pilots and groundcrew (eight Polish, six British and a Canadian) losing their lives.

The countryside walk around the fields is about two miles and is described as ‘easy going’. Car parking has been arranged at the airfield and at The Selsey Arms, which will offer a 1940’s menu to complement war memorabilia.

As the Allies prepared for the greatest coastal invasion in history, they built temporary ALG airfields to support fighter aircraft.

Work on Coolham Airfield began

in August 1943 and took ten months to complete. The first plane to land on 15 February 1944 was a shot-up American Marauder returning from Dresden. When its only remaining engine died, the bomber crash landed and skidded along the ground. Part of the propeller detached and killed one man on the ground. The last war-time landing took place on 19 January 1945.

The annual Horsham Riverside Walk starts at Horsham Rugby Club, Hammerpond Road, RH13 6PJ, on Saturday 6 July, at 10am. See parts of Horsham you never knew existed on the 13-mile walk. Starts at the rugby club with lunch and a selection of popular covers from The Toons at Warnham Nature Reserve. This free event will be held in support of Horsham Queen Elizabeth II School. The final resting place of William Pirie (1802 - 1868) has been restored thanks to two local businessmen.

Ross Andrews, Manager of Piries Bar, Horsham, was researching the history of the man who gave Piries Place its name when he discovered that he was laid to rest in Denne Road. Finding the grave in poor condition, Ross enlisted the help of Jamie Edworthy of Monumental Mason to help restore it.

“Very few of us are going to leave a legacy that will see us remembered 141 years after our passing,” said Ross. “Mr Pirie is one of the lucky few. Upon finding his grave, I felt it

was my obligation to give the monument some care and attention.”

Along with volunteers Nico Draisey and Steven Latto, Ross and Jamie were able to transform the monument.

William Pirie rebuilt Collyer’s School in 1840 and served as Headmaster for 46 years. He also built Piries Place - a terrace of cottages to fund his retirement. He was a familiar figure around Horsham, riding in his donkey cart, the inspiration for Lorne McKean’s statue in the town centre. He was buried with his second wife, Emma and one of his sons.

Horsham’s second major town centre event of the year, the Great British Weekend, was held on 11-12 May. Saturday’s Day of Dance, organised by Broadwood Morris, saw many styles of Morris performed by sides across town.

Both Horsham markets were buzzing with extra stalls, with the Bishopric Market also hosting a display of Morris Minors.

A giant deckchair attracted plenty of interest outside Horsham Wine Cellar, which hosted sparkling wine tastings from Coolhurst Vineyards.

Sunday’s highlights included a Concert for Samaritans and music from Horsham Folk Club on the Carfax bandstand.

Loxwood Joust provided sword fighting shows in Market Square, whilst circus skills were provided by Richard Alan.

On the Forum, a ‘Horsham-on-Sea’ theme inspired chalk pavement stencils, Dan the Hat and Punch & Judy Shows.

The Dashing Donkeys offered rides to authentic steam organ sounds.

The Great British Weekend includes a reminder of our country’s automotive heritage. Sunday saw a fine display of classic cars assembled by Storrington’s SADCASE group, a red steam bus from Horsham Traction Company and a well curated collection of Aston Martins.

Cote Restaurant’s Concours de Elegance award went to an immaculately restored 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Mk ll Vantage Volante, owned by Dave Whiting. The Manager’s Choice award went to a new DBS Superlegerra.

The Great British Weekend was supported by Horsham District Council and Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. The next town event is Feria de Horsham on Sunday 9 June, from 11am.

Inspired by Southern Spain’s traditional spring fairs, Feria de Horsham is a celebration of Spanish cuisine and entertainment. Guests will be able to enjoy great Spanish food, refreshing drinks and Flamenco music.

Volunteers at last year’s Midnight Walk, sponsored by Gatwick Airport

Ashington Community Centre has a new sensory garden.

Thanks to the generosity of the Ashington Co-op and its customers, as well as the hard work of Ashington Community Centre Trust (ACCT) volunteers, over 1,000 daffodils have been planted. They bloomed in unison in May, in a speciallyconstructed raised perimeter border.

A planting schedule will keep the area looking and smelling beautiful throughout the year.

The St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk takes place on Saturday 8 June.

This year, the walk has a new 2-mile family-friendly route alongside existing 7, 13 and 20 mile routes, so everyone can join in.

Entry is £15 with the fee including a free T-shirt, finisher's breakfast and medal. The event starts and ends at The Bridge Leisure Centre, Broadbridge Heath. Nearly 900 people have already signed up to the walk, sponsored by Gatwick Airport.

The charity is also appealing for volunteers, who are crucial to the evening.

A range of volunteering roles are available, from registering walkers to handing out sweets, to being course marshals and giving walkers their finish line medal.

Reggae Vibe Stirs Up a Carnival Atmosphere Itara helped visitors perform a Limbo Dance

Horsham revelled in the chilled vibes of the town’s first Caribbean Festival and Holiday Show on Sunday 19 May. Organised by Horsham District Council in partnership with The Sussex Travel Company in Queen Street, Horsham, a wonderful array of performers and attractions helped create a truly carnival atmosphere.

A highly-anticipated finale saw leading tribute act The Marley Experience delivering an hour-long set packed full of crowd pleasers including Stir It Up, Could You Be Loved and Exodus.

The Flair Affair made cocktails with style

A feisty cocktail of music and movement inspired many people to dance around the Bandstand, enjoying the rhythms and beats of the Caribbean. There were gentle Steel Pan Calypsos from Rachel Hayward, local Latin dancers and Dance Cubano. Triniboi Joocie and his carnival dancers played two brilliant sets that ended in a Soca Conga, which filled the area in front of the Bandstand.

Local dance group Rhythm and Sole also presented a dynamic set of performances and many took the chance to try limbo dancing, courtesy of Itara.

Dream Destinations The ‘Holiday Pavilion’ featured representatives from many Caribbean islands, leading hotels, tour operators and Virgin Atlantic. Visitors could find out about exciting island holiday options, completing questions for the show’s big holiday competition as they went.

As visitors followed the blue sprayed footprints from Swan Walk, they encountered a vista of Caribbean theming, including a chalk pavement drawing of tropical fish created by Annalees Lim. The Big Plant Nursery of Ashington provided potted palms for a performance area, whilst Horsham General Market was selling Caribbean fruit and vegetables.

The Giant Deckchair attracted plenty of selfies in front of the Tobago bus whilst Southwater Water Sports were kept busy as people asked about getting in some practice locally, before that Caribbean holiday, perhaps?

Youngsters loved the pirate ship that roamed the Carfax, with Pirate Pete dispensing balloon cutlasses. Some children dressed as pirates and mermaids, with the Non-Stop Party Shop awarding a voucher to the best dressed entrants. Classrooms for Kenya is a fantastic local charity founded and run by the students and teachers of The Weald School, Billingshurst.

Every year since 2006, Year 12 students have made their way to rural Kenya on a mission to help build three or more new classrooms. To date, we have built over 70 classrooms at 20 schools. The students will literally get their hands dirty, laying bricks, one by one! It’s an experience they’ll never forget.

How it Works To help raise money, students and teachers have held quiz nights, a monster mud run, car boot sales and craft sales. Each student is expected to raise at least £300 towards the cost of building materials and labour.

This year’s goal is to raise the £36,000 needed to build two new classrooms in three schools: Tuyoo-Kony Primary, Mwiruti Primary and Kaplemur Primary. Kitale is a poor, rural region of western Kenya that lacks funding. Currently, many schools are obliged to use simple mud huts for classrooms. They collapse every few years sometimes when children are in them – and need to be rebuilt. We aim to replace them with permanent, brick-built structures.

Tell us about your latest book, The End of the World in Nigh...

I was in The Works in Horsham when I came across a book about the prophecies of Nostradamus. I thought it would be funny if there was somebody else living at the same time as him, who was rubbish at prophecies. It sparked an idea.

Are there historical elements to the book?

The only fictitious creation is the central character of Philibert Montmorency. I spent a long time researching Renaissance France, magnifying the traits of historical figures. If someone is known to have been a little sycophantic, they become very sycophantic in the book. As

The more I researched, the more I realised what a fraud he was.

The End of the World is Nigh follows two timelines. There is a modern timeline where a new prophecy is discovered, predicting the end of the world.

When elements of the prophecy begin to play out, Nostradamus is credited with it. But a Professor of Mediaeval Languages tries to prove that the prediction was not made by Nostradamus, but

by somebody who has been forgotten. The book switches between France in the 1500s and the modern day, as the truth is uncovered.

This is not your first book?

I have written three books prior to this. The Limpet Syndrome, Soul Catchers and Dead Ends, which formed a trilogy. The first three are fantasy comedies, inspired by the likes of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. I read a lot of fantasy books and am influenced by writers like Philip K Dick, who can write science fiction and fantasy with touches of observational humour that mirror our way of life.

Was it nice to finish the trilogy?

It was refreshing to be able to do something different. One of the mistakes I made as a new author was in committing to a

to concentrate solely on books for weeks or even months at a time. It is extremely difficult to switch from work into writing.

Is it hard to promote work?

In my first month, I sold six copies of my first book and I could tell you exactly who bought them! Now, I advertise a lot through social media and have reached the point where I'm selling 1,000 books a month, making a small profit. When you’re self-publishing, you need to have more books, as your audience is smaller. Successful self-publishers like Mark Dawson has over 20 books and that is key.

Can you see progress with each book?

You improve with every one! I look back at The Limpet Syndrome and want to rewrite it. It's a good story, but you learn tricks over time and implement feedback on what readers like.

What is next for Tony Moyle?

I have many ideas that are on hold.

There’s a World War Two story that I’ve long thought about and a dystopian thriller that I have mapped out in my mind. However, it’s important to write what you are thinking about and other ideas are taking priority. I have an idea for a satirical Christmas book aimed at older children, which I may write under a different name. You chose to self-publish?

I completed my first book in 2010, when self-publishing was not available on the scale it is now. I tried to go down the traditional publishing route, but in truth, the book wasn't ready.

Due to work and family commitments, I put my writing dream on hold, before opting to self-publish The Limpet Syndrome in 2017. By then, it didn’t have the stigma attached to it. There was a time when self-published books sold very little and were generally of poor quality. If you look at bestsellers charts today, half of the Top 100 might be self-published. Authors like L J Ross have demonstrated that self-published authors can not only enjoy the freedom it offers, but make money too.

Re-Kindle a Passion Miranda Rijks’ thrillers prove a hit in the States Miranda Rijks Have you been writing long?

My first book, How Compatible Are You? was published in 1999. I had trained as a graphologist and using this experience I wrote a self-help book that looks at relationships by analysing handwriting. At the time, I didn't even have an agent. I wrote to Bloomsbury, pitched the idea and they liked it!

Then there was a long spell without a book?

I wrote through work, even writing a gardening column for Sussex Life. I wasn’t an avid gardener, but my family owned a garden centre at the time. But in 2001, a business opportunity came up in Manchester and I moved to Cheshire. We were happy there, but in the summer of 2015, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, so I moved back near Horsham for specialist treatment. It was a horrific time and the illness put many things in perspective. Having survived, I realised what I most wanted to do was write, so I took a Masters in Creative Writing.

You chose to write a book partly about your experiences?

I felt it was something I needed to do and enjoyed the process.

The book was called Don't Call Me Brave. It is fiction, but it’s informed by what I went through.

When you have cancer, people make all kinds of suppositions and I wanted to put that across. I self-published, as it was a personal project that I found incredibly cathartic. I’m healthy now. I’m one of the lucky ones.

was called The Obituary and the plan was to self-publish. I wasn’t terribly enamoured with the publishing route, as I had done most of the marketing myself yet was only receiving a fraction of the sales. Also, the book industry has changed and it’s far more commonplace for writers to go their own way.

The plan was to write several books which could be released in quick succession. I was all set when I received a call from a Dublinbased publisher, Inkubator.

So, you went with them?

I liked their ideas. They have a different model that provides lots of support throughout the writing process.

We re-released The Obituary with a new cover and title, I Want You Gone. it has been in the Top 30 in Psychological Fiction on Amazon.com since its launch. Then, the focus turned to a series of thrillers based on Dr Pippa Durrant.

You set the books in and around the Horsham District?

That’s right. Dr Durrant lives in Storrington. She is an independent psychologist who collaborates with Sussex Police.

I have two friends, one a former police officer and the other a psychologist, who give me guidance. Pippa specialises in lie detection skills, having learnt from ex-CIA agents.

How many Dr Pippa Durrant books have you written?

The first was Fatal Fortune, in which Pippa’s photograph is found on the body of a dead lottery winner in Broadbridge Heath! Fatal Flowers is based on a senseless murder in a garden centre. The third instalment is Fatal Finale, which is in the final stages of editing and will be out in June.

You are still releasing the books in quick succession…

It’s important to have books lined up, as people binge read.

I am a fast writer and average between 3,000 - 4,000 words a day. It helps that I’ve developed characters over several books and know them so well.

Are the books available at all good book stores?

The business model of my publisher is predominantly based on Amazon and Kindle, although I hope to supply some local stores.

What is the worst thing about being a writer?

Reviews. They can be brutal!

Some people relish sticking the knife in. I think some readers forget that a book is the work of a real person. It has been slogged over for months and is a huge part of them. While some reviews are just written by cynical people, there are other times when a harsh reviewer has been right. I have been guilty of trying to include too much action and not giving the reader space to breathe.

You learn from that. But still, most reviews have been very positive!

AAH meets Chairman Liam Young and long-serving members Jerome Roberty, Becky Sayers and James Mallock to find out more...

Liam: The South Downs Siegebreakers was founded seven years ago. I was previously Chairman of a games group in Eastbourne, but formed Siegebreakers with a couple of friends when I moved closer to Horsham.

Liam: We always meet at The Moon in Storrington High Street.

Pubs are ideal, as they offer a venue free of charge and in return the club brings people in.

We buy food and drink from the pub, as it’s very good and helps create a vibrant atmosphere. It’s a win-win situation, particularly as Tuesday nights are traditionally a quiet night for pubs.

James: I live in Storrington and came across a flyer on the village noticeboard, about a new games club. At the time, I loved playing Warhammer 40,000, so decided to pop along.

Liam: Initially, there were three or four people attending our weekly meetings. But it grew, mainly because of Warhammer 40,000.

I met Luke Alderson, who is now Treasurer, and he coerced some of his friends into joining.

Gradually, membership expanded through word-of-mouth and new gaming enthusiasts turned up.

Members come from Horsham, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Brighton and across Sussex.

Jerome: We are proud to have three or four females among our members. I can promise you that is a lot for a games club! That creates a more pleasant atmosphere. Some clubs are very competitive, hosting tournaments all the time, but this is more like a social club.

James: For those of us with families, the social side is vital. I have less time to paint models or build scenery than I used to have.

For me, it’s more about meeting up with friends whilst still maintaining a hobby.

Liam: Warhammer has been largely dropped on club nights, as interest has waned. There are

good reasons for that. Most games we play have affordable starter sets.

Jerome: With Warhammer, spending can escalate quickly as you build up armies. It is brilliant for introducing young people to gaming and Games Workshop stores are great, as they host demonstrations which encourages the social aspects of gaming.

But with new books and armies continually being introduced, the costs involved can really add up!

Liam: As our membership numbers have increased, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve drifted more towards skirmish and cooperative games, as we can get more people around the table. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cater for two-player battle games that take up half the space. Members will often bring in a new game to try out. Some prove a hit, others are played a couple of times before disappearing forever!

James: Tonight, we have several games underway. The Walking Dead is based on the TV series. Players can work together or fight each other as they avoid being eaten by zombies.

Tanks is a simple war game where players take command of a tank platoon with the aim of destroying an opponent. Gaslands is a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max style game. Players modify Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars and they can ram and race their way around the track. We also have Mythic Battles, a card game based on Ancient Greece.

Liam: We have a strong Guild Ball following at the club. It’s a skirmish game played with miniature figures, like football, but you can beat up opponents!

Jerome: The games industry has changed dramatically over recent years. Games Workshop and Warhammer used to dominate, but other more affordable games have entered the market. Star Wars X-Wing was the one that really altered the landscape by breaking into the mainstream. Its success was followed by games like Infinity and Malifaux. This has made it far more exciting.

James: As we don’t pay for a venue, we invest membership money on days out. This year, we went to Salute, the biggest board gaming convention in the UK, run by the South London Warlords. There were hundreds of stalls, allowing us to try out new games. But it can be hard to generate a following. Most games are run by small companies, supporting just one or two employees. They create amazing games, but don’t have the marketing power to properly promote them.

Liam: The level of detail in some of the games is remarkable. We’ve just backed Pacific Rim, a game based on the films, and the models are just phenomenal.

Jerome: One of the good things about skirmish games is that the models can be used for longer. It’s soul destroying when you have spent months painting an army, only for it to be destroyed with one roll of the dice!

James: Miniature model painting will always be an important part of gaming.

For some, creating scenery and painting characters for a game is where their passion lies. The detail of Chris Holt’s set of The Walking Dead is incredibly authentic, with lots of fake blood!

Becky: As well as board games, I arrange role play games on club nights, usually played with cards and dice. I spend a lot of time creating different characters and scenarios. Role play can be as strange as players want to make it, although there are tactics involved to reach the best outcome, so they help develop gameplay.

James: There is a huge gaming community. There are other clubs like Wargames in Crawley and 1066 in Hastings, and come shops rely on a games community. Unfortunately, Battlequest closed in Horsham, but we still have Gobsmack Comics, which has taken on Warhammer, as well as A and B Gaming in Worthing and Games Workshop in Crawley.

Jerome: Computer games like Fortnite are popular, but the physical world can’t be replicated by online game play. You cannot recreate the enjoyment of making and playing with real objects or the social interaction it gives.

A Parisian Tale In 2007, an extraordinary thing happened in Paris. A clock maker and an underground ‘cultural guerrilla’ group devoted to maintaining France’s national heritage, broke into the Pantheon, one of the city’s most famous monuments. From a secret workshop under the dome, they meticulously restored the Pantheon’s clock, which hadn’t worked in decades. It took a year, with even security guards oblivious to their presence.

“Previously, I was a cabinet maker, but had grown tired of the dust involved and needed a career change,” recalls Stephen.

“I had studied clock restoration at West Dean, joining for the second half of the two-year course as I had prior experience.”

“During that time, I asked David if I could come along to help him with the clock courses, just to gain more experience. When he did call me, he instead asked if I wanted to buy the business!

Some people might bring in a Grandfather clock picked up for only a few pounds at auction, whilst others might have highly valuable pieces. On one occasion, a collector on the course repaired a clock worth £30,000.

“I always advise against buying on eBay,” says Stephen. “Clocks will often have missing parts and we can’t fix them. With an auction house, you can check if a clock is complete. Having damaged parts is better than having missing parts, as replacements can often

cost more than you paid for the rest of the clock!”

“We see some fascinating pieces.

Somebody from a famous clock making family attended a course as he was building a collection. It was amazing to see his antique pieces, dating back to the 18th century. It was the clock equivalent of somebody walking into an art gallery with an original Van Gogh painting. It’s the variety that makes this exciting. Even after 14 years, there are two clocks here this week that I have never seen before.”

Best of British Some of the most sought-after names among collectors are those of British clock makers in the 16th and 17th century. A reportedly “dirty” table clock by Thomas Tompion, renowned as the ‘father of English clock making’ sold for £900,000 in 2003. A design by Joseph Knibb went under the hammer for £1.2million, whilst a clock by French maker Breguet sold for over £5million.

“Collectors all over the world are happy to pay huge sums for the finest clocks by the likes of Tompion, Knibb and Edward East,” says Stephen. “As with art, value very much depends on who made it. A stunning painting might be worth next to nothing, whilst one signed with the right name can be worth millions.”

“In the 1600s, English makers came to the fore and what followed was a golden age. The French made beautiful clocks too, but in my opinion, ours were best!”

by Londonbased maker Thomas Bradford, made circa 1695. “The clock has been in my family for as long as I can remember and has been reasonably well looked after,” said Niels. “But it needs a good clean and regular service to ensure it doesn't deteriorate. It is valuable, as it comes from the period when British clock makers were at their peak, so I need to handle it delicately. It’s reassuring to have someone with Stephen’s knowledge to turn to with any problems!”

If you break it, a replacement will cost you £1,000.” David Chamberlain was working on a Grandfather clock made in Leighton Buzzard, circa 1830. “The clock belongs to a friend,” he said. “People know that I do this as a hobby, so they regularly bring me clocks in the hope that I will fix them!”

For me, it’s as much about the social side as anything. Those of us staying in the local pub meet up in the evening, chatting about clocks over a pint or two. We all have plenty of time to discuss clocks!”

GOES LIKE A BULLITT TUNING MUSTANGS & COBRAS AT PILGRIM MOTORSPORTS When it comes to choosing the greatest car chase ever committed to celluloid, there are several leading candidates.

Motoring movie fans could make a case for the high-speed chase through Paris in Ronin, or the thrilling getaway that introduces more recent hit, Baby Driver.

But in terms of iconic status, nothing comes close to 1968 classic Bullitt, featuring a Ford Mustang GT 390. Fifty years on, it continues to inspire global passion for the Mustang.

One business to benefit from this is Pilgrim Motorsports in Henfield, renowned as a leading restorer of Mustangs. ALL REVVED UP To those passionate about a certain breed of classic car, Pilgrim is an established name. The business has been running for about 35 years, but has reached new heights under current owners Paul Bennett and Adrian Hewittson.

Having sold a previous business, Paul arranged a trip to America with fellow classic car enthusiast Adrian. It was a trip that would eventually lead them to Pilgrim. Their Arizona tour culminated with them buying a dozen cars, which they duly transported across the Atlantic. “We rented some space in the back workshop at Pilgrim Cars, which at the time was

struggling,” says Paul. “We restored the cars for several months, before we discussed the idea of buying the business.”

“We were both up for the challenge and our offer was accepted. We changed the name to Pilgrim Motorsports and substantially increased what we offered. Today, we’re a one-stop shop for all makes of classic cars. We have a body shop and paint shop, so we’re able to repair and restore cars, and our team has invaluable experience.”

COBRA BITES BACK AC was a British car company that found success with the AC Ace. But a letter from an American named Carroll Shelby set events in motion that would alter motor racing history. Shelby asked AC to modify the bodywork of the Ace so that it could accommodate a Ford V8. The result was the AC Cobra.

“Shelby took the car to Le Mans and shocked the world of motor sport,” said Paul. “His Cobra Shelby beat the Ferraris and people couldn’t believe what they were seeing. That was how Shelby became a legend and why children of my generation had Cobra pictures on their bedroom wall.”

Early in the 1980’s, the original owner of Pilgrim decided to replicate the Cobra, with design patents having expired. He used an original AC Cobra, which today would be worth over £1million, to create a body mould.

Ever since, Pilgrim Cobras have been created from scratch, with parts built around a fibreglass shell. Customers can select their own colour and V8 engine, with options including a Rover engine, a Chevrolet 350 or a Ford 302.

“We are building cars as they used to be built and that is what people love about Pilgrim,” said Paul. “Customers often come in and watch, as everything is done by hand, as it was 50 years ago.

I often say that there are two car manufacturers in the south-east of England; Rolls-Royce and Pilgrim Motorsports!”

Finding good ones is harder than ever and Adrian turns most down.

Only last week, he drove 2,300 miles in nine days, looking at 12 cars in different States. He only bought two of them.”

Soon, the mums in the scrum will be ready to turn-over a new page in the history of Horsham Rugby Club.

Under the guidance of coaches Stephen Driver and Tyrone (Ty) Matthews, Horsham Ladies has been growing in both numbers and confidence since its foundation last autumn. The squad is training in preparation for its first league campaign, which will kick off in September.

“The idea initially came from Stephen and Ty,” says Trish Lefevre, a founder player.

“Horsham has established several strong and successful girls’ teams and there was a concern that they would be forced to stop playing rugby after leaving the Under-18s as there wasn’t anywhere for them to go. By establishing a ladies’ team, they’ll be able to carry on their involvement.”

Only a handful of players turned out for the early training sessions, but word spread quickly. Social media helped generate interest, but most recruits came from mums watching children in Sunday’s youth training session.

Jo Thomas, who has a son and a daughter playing for Horsham, was among the first to step forward.

“Once people could see us taking part in training, they started asking

questions and wanting to be involved. By November, we had a good number of players and a high proportion were mums, which encouraged others to try.

By Christmas, it had snowballed to about 25 players.”

“Playing rugby is very hard work, especially for those of us who are a little bit older and haven’t exercised since school! It’s not for everyone and we have lost people along the way, as physically it’s tough. But everyone in the squad feels better for it.

Rugby helps us stay in good shape, has a positive impact on mental health and gives us a social outlet too.”

“You can be skinny and fast, or big and strong; there is a position for you. Because of that, teams often have a great morale. When we started out, everyone was constantly apologising for making a tackle. Gradually, the word ‘sorry’ has faded away and you now hear friendly banter instead!”

Developing Gameplay Several players experienced their first taste of full-bloodied action in February, when Burgess Hill Ladies gave some Horsham Ladies the opportunity to play a part in a friendly encounter. The team’s first game under the name of Horsham Ladies came later, at a Sevens tournament in East Grinstead.

3D-LIPO REVOLUTION THE HORSHAM BUSINESS PROMOTING BODY CONFIDENCE If you read women’s gossip magazines and tabloid newspapers, you may have heard of 3D-Lipo.

According to OK! Gemma Collins is using the high-tech machines to slim down as its been credited for the “sleeker silhouettes” of Alex Gerrard and Alexandra Burke. A source told Closer that Coleen Rooney had lost weight after a course of 3D Lipo, while in Woman’s Own, one fan of the treatment described how her “fat was melted” as she played Candy Crush!

As this treatment is now available in Horsham, AAH went to find out what it was about....

Cherry’s Place Cherry Largue-Halligan has worked in the health and beauty industry for many years, gaining her Diploma from the British Beauty Council in 1993.

Since then, she has worked as a make-up artist and for a private surgery clinic in Brighton. Now, she runs her own business, 3D-Lipo Sussex.

Cherry started at home, having bought a state-of-the-art device from 3D-Lipo Ltd after reading positive reviews.

After picking up regular clients, Cherry moved the business to Horsham town centre three

months ago. It is now based in a treatment room at Mooeys at 2 South Street.

“3D-Lipo machines are at the heart of my business, as I also use 3D-Lipo for facial treatments,” says Cherry. “The technology is designed to target specific body indications through the treatment of fat removal, skin tightening and cellulite. We can target the ‘bingo wings’ under the arms, thigh gaps, muffin tops or love handles.”

takes a long time to recover from. Often, you need days or even weeks off work and cannot drive afterwards.”

“What I do is offer a private and confidential consultation to see how we can give people body confidence. We look at their lifestyle and diet, helping to educate them. The treatments help, but they shouldn’t be perceived as a miracle cure.

People also need to exercise and drink plenty of water to ensure treatments are effective.”

WHAT’S ON AT THE CAPITOL Fat Removal The treatment that has generated 3D-Lipo the most column inches is its fat removal.

Fat freezing, technically known as cryolipolysis, is the method of using freezing temperatures to break down fat cells in a small area of the body. It takes time for the fat cells to then leave the body naturally.

Cherry said: “For the fat removal treatment, we target just a small area and freeze it at -6 degrees.

That’s cold enough to freeze fat cells, but it doesn’t impact blood circulation. With the fat cells effectively dead, they are flushed out over time. These treatments are not something that should be done regularly. I recommend a treatment every 12 weeks, although that time can be reduced slightly with the addition of shockwave therapy.”

3D-Lipo Sussex also provides for cellulite treatments and has Jett Plasma technology, which is used for skin tightening and nonsurgical skin lifting, as well as other anti-aging treatments.

“People never stop aging, so this is about enhancing what you've got,” says Cherry. “There is huge pressure on men and women today, but there's no such thing as a perfect body. We’re not trying to turn everyone into a size 10. Our treatments are about making people feel comfortable with who they are and giving them just a little bit more confidence.”

BRUSH OVER HISTO THE SUSSEX ARTISTS THAT SHAPED A 90-YEAR LEGACY The Association of Sussex Artists (ASA) hosts an exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery this summer.

As well as showcasing the work of leading artists from across the county, the exhibition will focus on past masters of the 90-year-old Horsham-based Association.

Part of the Horsham District Year of Culture, Adventures in Art tells the complete story of the ASA. A painting from its very first meeting, by Bainbridge Copnall, depicts calves being sold at Horsham Market. It is featured in the exhibition alongside work by contemporary artists including Alison Ingram, Dennis Roxby Bott, Ben Smith, Claire Phillips, John Davies, Angela Britton, Gordon

Rushmer and many more.

Here though, we look back at ASA history and highlight a few of the artists that helped shaped the fine Association it is today...

First Exhibits In 1928, there was no art gallery in Horsham and few museums in Sussex with galleries available to exhibit work. So, when wealthy landowner and amateur artist John Thoburn McGaw of St. Leonardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Grange was looking for a venue to showcase his work, options were limited. His solution was to hold a Sussex Art Exhibition at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, enabling artists and sculptors to showcase their work.

Specialist mortgages offer variety of options

The West Sussex County Times covered the exhibition. Lady Winterton opened the show and two paintings by Felix E. Andrews were bought immediately. Various paintings were described in the paper’s report, including Copnall’s ‘Calves, Horsham Market’, which is now in the Museum’s collection.

The County Times’ critic concluded his report by writing: “Those who have not made a serious study of art may perhaps be astonished to find work in this gallery which to the eye of the uninitiated seems unworthy of exhibition. Some paintings of still life and fruit are distorted, misshapen and appear rather in the nature of a joke. The experts declare that they are serious works of art. The public and majority of artists will, we think, still prefer the beautiful in painting.”

The report added that “children will refuse to worship at ugliness, disorder and revolution as evidenced in paintings of the extreme school.”

Setting the Rules Following the exhibition, Mr McGaw was elected President of the ASA. The Association soon published rules, declaring its intention to “foster by every means the appreciation of art in its various branches in Sussex”.

Members had to be resident, or have been resident, in Sussex and could include painters, sculptors and certain craftsmen, such as bookbinders. Later, the list expanded to incorporate jewellery, enamels and metalwork, tapestry, woodwork, ceramics, stained glass and illumination and textiles.

Whilst this is a slight negative for the mortgage market, as their lending book amounted to over £3.7bn, others continue looking for ways in which to help attract new business. We’ve seen some great new product additions and just recently, our friends at Masthaven Bank have launched some fantastic products aimed at the Buy to Let sector.

They’ve also launched a new ‘Specialist Landlord/Tenant’ product to cater for a wider variety of landlord and tenant types including Holiday lets, Airbnb lets, DWP/Asylum tenants and Houses of Multiple Occupation/Student accommodation (6 or fewer rooms on a single or multiple AST). Great news.

Finally, Help to Buy (HTB) schemes have also been given a boost.

We have a lender who offers free standard valuations on all HTB products available in England and Wales. They will also consider schemes with 5% Builders incentives and allow the mortgage offer to be valid for 6 months with extensions possible.

Obviously with all the above, terms and conditions apply and it’s down to the lenders standard underwriting and affordability checks. But these are signs that despite the uncertainty, there are active and proactive lenders looking to help all types of customers.

There were only a handful of members in the Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early years, although several were influential figures in Horshamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history. J. T. McGaw was the son of an Irish landowner and entrepreneur who had accumulated wealth from sheep and minerals in Australia. He developed a talent for watercolour painting, exhibiting at the Royal Academy.

J. B. Shrewsbury was Art Master at Horsham Grammar School (Collyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s), where he was known to the pupils as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Shrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. He was also made an Honorary Curator of Horsham Museum in 1928 and one of his watercolours is featured in the upcoming exhibition. H. A. Rigby was Art Master at Christâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital School, where one of his pupils was Keith Vaughan.

Miss Edith Harms became Principal of Horsham School of Art. She exhibited regularly with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in London, the Royal Academy, and the Society of Women Artists. One of her paintings is featured in this new exhibition .

P. H. Padwick was a professional artist. The year after the formation of the Association, he exhibited two paintings at The Royal Academy. One of his works will be on display.

B. Lintott was a councillor of Horsham Urban District Council.

By all accounts, he was a talented amateur, though the Museum has none of his works.

Moving Forward By 1930, the ASA had established its annual exhibition in June, whilst members now included John G. Millais and Dr Geoffrey Sparrow.

A report on the Brighton Exhibition of Sussex Artists at the Municipal Galleries in 1932 now provides an insight to the state of art in Sussex at that time. Sussex Women Art Club submitted 117 works by 41 artists, Brighton Art Club 96 works by 35 artists, East Sussex Art Club 71 works by 32 members and the Association of Sussex Artists submitted 50 pieces by 21 artists. Society and the Society of Painters were also represented, whilst there were 101 artists not affiliated to any club.

The Sussex art scene was evidently flourishing, as was the Association. In 1939, it was reported that since its inauguration the Association had sold art to the value of £274.10, with 4,244 people visiting its shows.

Due to the war, exhibitions were moved to Horsham Town Hall, which helped increase visitor numbers. One committee member was Vincent Lines, Head of Art at Horsham Art School.

During the war, he was one of several notable artists employed to record Britain. After the war, it was agreed that the exhibition should be held outside of Horsham. So, Hove Museum was the venue in 1946, followed by Southover Grange in Lewes. The Association would go on to exhibit at Worthing, Lewes and Steyning, as well as in Horsham.

Throughout the years, the ASA continued its programme with little concern about changes in the wider art scene. This led to accusations that the same people were voting for each other’s entries. Accusations of bias among members or the lack of contemporary work could be debated, but what is certain is that the Association took a wrong step in 1950. By a majority vote, it was decided that lady members should not be invited to be members of the Committee.

It was a decision that would not have pleased founder member Edith Harms.

Modern Art Debate Like the rest of the nation, the 1951 Festival of Britain encouraged the Association to hold a month-long exhibition.

The County Times reported that 100 paintings failed to make the grade, with 180 hung and 70 others exhibited.

One letter to the paper claimed that the exhibition contained no examples of contemporary and modern work. In response, ASA member Noel Hopking wrote that the exhibition, “contains much sound, honest painting of a high standard and happily none of the decadent daubs of the surrealists.”

His stance was echoed the following year, when President Joseph Powell described the ASA as a “sound school free from imported eccentricities.”

The County Times provided illuminating commentary. It reported that there was “nothing ultra-modern, obscure or experimental about the paintings, etchings, drawings, pottery, gems and carvings on display”, leading to much correspondence. Views for and against modern art were expressed by readers. The Secretary was quoted as saying that, “it is not the mission of the Association to administer shocks to its patron.”

However, a year later, the critic H.G.B would write of the exhibition in The Sussex Express: “There is confident competence in picture-making, but too little depth of vision or originality.”

By 1954, The County Times commented in a similar vein.

true artist does need something above mere skill? Surely it is his perceptive genius which lifts his work out of the workmanlike rut into the realm of original art.”

The Purchase The ASA works within a context of the wider art scene. The greatest complaint of it is that it is not contemporary and is too traditional.

The 20th Century saw an explosion in art movements all exploring the human experience.

At the same time, new materials led to a demand to be different.

The Association came into existence at a time when Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism challenged the status quo. Later, New York gave us Abstract Expressionism, using form and colour to interpret the artists’ subconscious thoughts.

In the 1950s and 60s, Pop Art became a popular medium, before Post Modernism arrived in the 1980s.

Does it matter? Should the Association keep up with new trends? Or should it be producing art that the public enjoy? Perhaps both, exploring the new trends to challenge and enable them to grow as artists, whilst also seeking to produce quality work.
