“Our Help at Home Service is for anyone over the age of 50 and living in Horsham District. It’s that little bit of extra help around the house, so if the garden is getting a bit too much to handle or if getting the groceries or hoovering is starting to be tricky, please get in touch and hopefully we’ll be able to help.

The service is competitively priced, and the hourly rate you pay depends on your income (starting at £8 per hour).

We are supported by a team of about 50 self-employed Home Helps across the District. They all work different hours/days to suit their lifestyles. All of the Home Helps who work with us are lovely, caring people - we carry out DBS checks and obtain references.”

Those with one of the toys are encouraged to take a picture and upload it to a website at www.globalgruffalo.co.uk with a description of where they are in the world. The gruffalo is then passed on to someone else.

It’s hoped that all 20 will return to Horsham by the end of the year so they can feature in an exhibition at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens during 2020.

VALUES HOW A BBC SHOW TRANSFORMED NAFISI STUDIO

From a workshop in tranquil Plummers Plain, Abdollah and Kate Nafisi use traditional tools to create unique pieces of furniture.

Abdollah’s distinctive style already had many admirers, but his outlook has been greatly altered after his stint on BBC2 programme, The Victorian House of Arts and Crafts.

AAH visited the Nafisi Studio to see the unorthodox crafters at work...

PERSIAN ADVENTURE Abdollah was raised in Iran and as a boy was inspired by his mother’s work as an architect and by the creative mind of his father, a scientist and inventor. He visited England for the first time as a teenager, when his father completed a PhD at Cranfield University. But it was his own wild adventures in Iran that would inform Abdollah’s career path and working ethos.

“Being an entrepreneur and running a business seemed normal, because it was what my parents had done,” he

says. “I always thought I would be an architect. I studied Architecture and Design, but it was my experiences of travelling that truly inspired me.

I spent seven years with tribes and nomads, developing a passion for photography as I captured the people and buildings of the Iranian desert.”

“I was fascinated by the way these people lived spontaneously, moving from place to place, taking animals with them and using sheep wool to make beautiful carpets and rugs.

What I most admired was that their inspiration came from the environment around them.”

“But carpenters were not designing furniture that suited these incredible rugs. Furniture designers create individual pieces which follow the style of the day, rather than looking at the environment all around us. So, I wanted to learn the techniques of western crafts and merge that knowledge with my Persian influences to produce furniture that perfectly suited these rugs.”

EXPOSED PIONEER Abdollah’s style was striking, bold and distinctive, and yet at the same time ingeniously simplistic.

He turned furniture inside out!

“I love handmade joinery which has been exposed, just like the craftsmanship of the rugs that I love is exposed,” he said.

“The hinges that everyone makes inside the cabinets, I moved to the outside. The joints that were always hidden, either for aesthetic or practical reasons, I reversed.

I want people to see them and create honest furniture that not only tells the story of the wood, but has a playful element.”

“When it comes to exposed joinery work, I believe I am one of the pioneers of this style.”

The Horsham and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK organises activities and programmes for the benefit of its members.

As well as Pilates, table tennis and social events, a weekly Qi Gong class helps people restrict the impact of the disease. Qi Gong is a Chinese exercise system dating back centuries. Its gentle movements make it well suited to those suffering with Parkinson’s.

Coach David Sanderson said: “Whilst it is slow-paced and repetitive, Qi Gong focuses on balance, range of movement and flexibility.

It incorporates controlled breathing, helping people to relax through increased oxygen intake, so it’s particularly good for Parkinson’s.”

“Since some exercises are enhanced by imagining the passage of the breath through the body, like many forms of mindfulness meditation, it increases proprioception, the awareness of the body’s positioning.”

Dorothy Hatfield, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight years ago, said: “The class is very good, as it challenges our balance, which is the one thing we all lose. It is not easy, as just standing for half an hour can be difficult, which is why we all have a chair. We can take a break when we need to, but certainly, my body knows it’s been working after a Qi Gong session.”

HORSHAM REPAIR CAFE PROMOTES SUSTAINABLE LIVING

A project that promotes environmentallyconscious living is proving a remarkable success in Horsham.

The Horsham Repair Café, held at the Quaker Meeting House on Worthing Road, is a free monthly event that enables the public to source sustainable household essentials at low cost, gain information on energy saving and even have electrical devices repaired.

By offering practical expertise as well as information on climate action, the Repair Café has proved to be a success, with hundreds of people using it for a variety of reasons.

Quaker Roots The Horsham Quakers established a refill service several years ago, inviting the public to refill plastic bottles with household necessities including washing detergent,

fabric conditioner, shampoo, shower gel and dishwasher tablets. All the products available are supplied by environmentally-friendly brands including Ecover, as well as British companies Faith in Nature and Bio-D. But the demand has grown substantially since the introduction of other services at the Meeting House.

Helen Whittington said: “The Horsham Repair Cafe ties in with the sustainable ethos of what we do as Quakers, so when they asked to share the space, we were delighted. More people are coming every month and it’s reached the stage where it's becoming harder to fit everything in. We now have organic wholefoods from EarthKind too, offering pasta, rice, pulses, dried fruit, seeds, chocolate chips and olive oil, so we need to expand into the afternoon. In the morning, our focus will remain on repairs, refills and energy saving, with a new fabric and textile swap shop, as well as upcycling, moving to the afternoon session.”
