NATIONAL INITIATIVE FUND What is NIF? The National Initiative Fund (NIF) was created to strategically advance awareness and recognition of ABPS Member Boards as a choice for physicians. NIF contributions enable the organization to advocate for ABPS Board Certifications with influential stakeholders, including the U.S. Congress, state legislators, state medical boards, hospital systems and health plans.

This is the result of hospitals, health plans, online databases and communication platforms updating their policies and bylaws to include ABPS. In April 2021, for the first time, a ABPS BCEM virtual oral examination was successfully conducted. The virtual examination process better meets the needs of busy examiners and provides a more cost-effective examination process for candidates (headed by Mrs. Susan LoBianco).

With the fiscal responsibility that we have demonstrated, the financial future of AAPS has been secured by sale of unused office space and retirement of our mortgage and attainment of a balanced budget with positive cash flow, even in a pandemic year when other organizations are struggling for economic survival.

4. The successful efforts of our External Affairs team continued throughout the pandemic, growing legislative relations, and educating decision-makers to the objectives of AAPS and ABPS. In addition, the staff’s efforts have contributed to the increased number of applicants seeking our boards of certification by over 30% (team led

5. Our emergency medicine fellowship program has grown exponentially and is continuing to gain recognition across the country. This expansion of the Emergency Medicine Graduate Training Fellowship Program was accomplished by the dedicated Committee Members and staff (headed by Dr. Elizabeth MaxwellSchmidt).

6. Launch and implementation of the “AAPS Achievement Awards Program” with the assistance of Dr. Terrance Baker, Jeff Morris, JD, and Ms. Keely Clarke.

7. Reestablishment of the AAPS Foundation (first appointee and chair Dr. Craig Smith).

8. Selection of an Editorial Board for the American Journal of Clinical Medicine (AJCM).

9. Establishment of the AAPS position of Archivist to document and establish a historical record of the AAPS (first appointee Dr. Madeline Zak).

10. Establishment of the AAPS position of Presidential Advisor selected by the AAPS President (first appointee Dr. Terrance L. Baker).

11. Development of the Biographical Abstract of the AAPS Executive Committee and its Board of Directors to help educate AAPS Diplomate Members on their leadership within the organization.

12. Submission/acceptance of multiple manuscripts in PubMed refereed journals supported in part by grants from the AAPS Foundation (first efforts by Dr. Terrance Baker, Immediate Past AAPS President).

15. Reorganization of the ABPS Surgery Board in General Surgery (headed

16. Reorganization of the ABPS Surgery Board in Ophthalmology (headed by Sade Kosoko-Lasaki).

17. Development of a new two-tier eligibility and certification process under our Board of Certification in Family Medicine Obstetrics.

18. All the objectives of the Strategic Planning Committee 20202021 have been met and we have exceeded every goal in membership growth, financial growth, and membership retention (headed by Drs. Jerry Allison, Judy Smith, and many others).

BCFMO Now Offers Non-Surgical Pathway To better serve Family Physicians practicing Obstetrics in the United States, the Board of Certification in Family Medicine Obstetrics® (BCFMO) now offers a non-surgical option for certification. The new non-surgical path to Family Medicine Obstetrics certification requires a log of non-surgical deliveries and successful completion of the written certification exam. The surgical path to certification, which is now referred to as Family Medicine Obstetrics with Surgical Qualifications, requires an additional log of cesarean deliveries and successful completion of the written and an oral exam.

Federal Activities Even through the challenges of 2020 and the COVID-19 Pandemic, Jeff Morris JD and Monique Tapie, our External and Government Affairs consultant continued to advance our federal and government relations efforts, expanding our reach into new areas. In 2020, NIF funds were essential in advancing recognition before legislators and regulators. Your donations to NIF enabled Jeff and Monique to further build awareness of the impact of the monopoly in physician board certification. Their work resulted in coordinating directly with the White House to identify some of our top physicians for potential Presidential Appointments, along with direct conversations with Senior Counsel of HHS. In advancement and support of their efforts, Jeff and Monique worked directly with one of the country’s top antitrust attorneys that resulted in the white paper titled “The American Board of Medical Specialties: Certification and the Need for Antitrust Enforcement. If you have not yet accessed the white paper please click here. This white paper, funded by the foundation, helped to advance and support their efforts before key legislators, congressional committees, regulators and influencers.

The monopoly and their key partners continued their discriminatory practices, even in the hardest hit cities combatting the pandemic. These actions drove Jeff and Monique to further their ongoing efforts to educate and build awareness of the ABPS and its physicians. This resulted in garnering the attention of key legislators, State Health Chairs, Attorneys General and the White House. They worked to develop media coverage which highlighted the wrongdoing of the ABMS and top hospitals following such dangerous policies that were denying patient access to care at the time they needed it most.

Expanding upon their existing efforts, they worked to further build ABPS coalitions with key partners that can greatly assist in advancing the organization.

Rising to the Challenge New ABPS Public Website Now Live The new ABPS public website was designed to be mobile-friendly and easy to navigate for stakeholders in the physician board certification marketplace. This new website offers an opportunity for Diplomates to create awareness of ABPS among their colleagues and industry stakeholders. We encourage you to share the new website that includes information about our nationally recognized multi-specialty certifying body and its unique board certification options.

Advancing ABPS Awareness Our other marketing communications program continue to increase awareness of ABPS board certification for physicians seeking a choice in certification options. One of these programs is content marketing featuring articles discussing the work and specialty specific subject matter of ABPS Diplomates. We are grateful for their participation in this program.

Other programs include messaging specialty specific residents and physicians on Doximity, targeted digital advertising, and a virtual presentation to a state medical staff professional conference. Our goal with these efforts is to build relationships with industry programs and potential applicants.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. has created a program to identify prospective future leaders in medicine with an interest in cultivating participation in the organization. As AAPS looks to the future of growth and advancement, we are seeking to identify interested candidates who will successfully project the organization in the right direction.

It is our strong belief that developing effective leaders is essential to ensure the continued growth of our organization as well as the advancement of our Diplomates in medicine.

All AAPS Members and ABPS Diplomates are invited to apply. Acceptance is based on level of interest and experience based on response in the application.
