WE ARE A SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER Nevada SBDC guides and assists Nevadans looking to start and grow businesses, with objectives to increase business starts, create and retain jobs, and increase access to capital. One-on-one advising services are free and confidential. Nevada SBDC also offers and coordinates a wide range of workshops and courses in collaboration with public and private entities.

In the News Channel 13 'It's a great loss not only to UNLV but to the community,' AAPI Chamber reacts to tragedy The Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is mourning the loss of two of its members following the UNLV tragedy. "I've heard such great things about all these professors, not only their rapport and a relationship with continuing the education of their students," said Catherine Francisco, CEO of the AAPI Chamber. "I was also told that they were community leaders as well and participated in the community, so you know, it's a great loss not only to UNLV but to the community itself," said Francisco.

By Minjia Yan Executive Director of AAPI Chamber Foundation The largest population of the current workforce is millennial. According to Jeff Speck’s 2018 book Walkable City Rules, “64% of millennials first choose where they want to live, and only then do they look for work.” Competing for success in a global marketplace means creating high quality places where workers, entrepreneurs, and businesses want to locate, invest, and expand. The AAPI Chamber Foundation is a nonpartisan, 501c3 nonprofit organization that engages in a variety of social and economic development activities designed to position Southern Nevada as a leader in the innovation economy by growing emerging sectors, focusing on equity; creating talent of tomorrow; and building neighborhoods as vibrant places to work, live, and play.
In today’s competitive environment, Southern Nevada is not only competing with other surrounding regions in Arizona, Utah, and Texas, but also competing with international cities at a global scale. In order to stand out among the competitions, Southern Nevada needs to take on the next level and go beyond the traditional economic development methods. In the New Economy, knowledgesector jobs are growing, especially in the post-pandemic digital era, and entrepreneurship, innovation, technology, and collaboration are the key drivers of economic growth. Tax abatement is no longer the only thing companies are looking for. Great companies with high-pay jobs are always locating in or expanding to where good talent resides. Therefore, Cities are changing the way they approach economic development.
Instead of primarily promoting themselves with low cost of living, tax incentives, and other traditional competitive advantages, many cities today are attracting multi-generational high skilled talent by becoming desirable places to live, work, and play. Placemaking And the process of creating vibrant, high quality places is called Placemaking. These places can range from large-scale projects such as Downtown Summerlin, Symphony Park, The District, and UnCommons, to small-scale efforts such as pop-up retail, community center, and public park. Elements of high quality places include but are not limited to mixed uses, public spaces, broadband-enabled, efficient transportation multimodal, multiple housing options, walkability, recreation and green spaces, family-friendly activities, safe, community heritage, arts, culture, and creativity. Firms seek talented workers, who seek quality places, and quality places continue to attract new residents, jobs, and investment. Competing for success in a global marketplace means creating high quality places where workers, entrepreneurs, and businesses want to locate, invest, and expand. Therefore, the AAPI Chamber Foundation focuses on a comprehensive approach of the ecosystem. We assist the Chamber on the economic
development initiatives, but we also look at ways to retain and attract talent, youth programs, introducing emerging sectors that make sense for Southern Nevada, and working with public and private partners in planning, land use, architecture, transportation, and real estate development to make sure Southern Nevada has high quality places for these talent and businesses.
Southern Nevada Strong I am thrilled to announced that the AAPI Chamber Foundation has officially joined Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada’s Southern Nevada Strong Outreach Working Group to assist RTC in community engagement and translation service for its regional plan update. The Southern Nevada Strong Regional Plan was first created in 2015 as a vision and blueprint that identifies strategies and priorities to create sustainable communities that promote a higher quality of life for all Southern Nevada residents.
The region’s top priorities serve to organize goals and strategies within the plan into four main themes: Improving economic competitiveness and education, investing in complete communities, increasing transportation choice, and building capacity for implementation. RTC serves as the core administrator of the Southern Nevada Strong initiative in collaboration with 13 regional partners such as the local municipalities, UNLV, Southern Nevada Water Authority, Clark County School District, Southern Nevada Health District, Metro, Nevada Department of Transportation, and Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
Transportation Access to Jobs and Employment In December, the Foundation also joined RTC’s Coordinated Transportation Stakeholder Advisory Committee, which aims to enhance mobility for seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals. And my focused area on this committee is to increase accessibility to jobs and job training centers for workers in underserved communities.
