Impact Report 2025-2026 Season

Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to share Arts & Lectures’ inaugural impact report, an opportunity to reflect on the 2025-2026 season and the many ways our programs enrich the cultural life of our region. Each season, Arts & Lectures brings people together in meaningful ways. Whether welcoming thousands of schoolchildren to their first live performance, engaging UCSB students with world-renowned artists, presenting free cultural celebrations through ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara!, or inspiring lifelong learners with new ideas and perspectives, our work reaches far beyond the stage. This report highlights some of the many communities we are honored to serve and the impact these programs have across Santa Barbara County. It also reflects a core belief that guides our work: the arts are most powerful when they are accessible, inclusive and shared.

I want to particularly acknowledge Sara Miller McCune, whose extraordinary, long-term generosity as our Season Sponsor has provided a foundation upon which so much of our work has been built. Her steadfast belief in Arts & Lectures and its role in our community has helped us expand what is possible, both on our stages and off. As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding access and creating transformative experiences that enrich lives across our region. Thank you for believing in this mission and for making it possible. Together, we are building a more vibrant, connected and creative community.

Warmly,

Meghan Bush Miller McCune Executive Director UCSB Arts & Lectures Sara Miller McCune with Meghan Bush

WHY WE SUPPORT A&L

A Community of Curious Minds

photo: Isaac Hernández de Lipa

For the Primacks and the McConnells, a season of performances led to new interests – and new friendships.

“We’re seeing the same concerts as audiences at Disney Concert Hall and discovering books we never would have picked up otherwise.” A&L Ambassador Andrew Primack and Leadership Circle member Liisa Primack with Nancy and Mike McConnell

New to Santa Barbara, Liisa and Andrew Primack arrived at the 2025-2026 UCSB Arts & Lectures season launch party and found themselves sharing a table with longtime supporters Nancy and Mike McConnell. As more than 50 performances and events were unveiled, the Primacks wondered how they could possibly choose. The McConnells had an answer: The WORKS! “Nancy and Mike explained The WORKS! to us and threw down the gauntlet,” Andrew recalled. “They had done it the previous season and had wonderful things to say.” The Primacks accepted the challenge, signing up for the season-long package that includes every Arts & Lectures event. The McConnells recognized the same excitement they had felt when they signed up the year before. A former UCSB dance student, Nancy has a particular connection to A&L’s dance and education programs. “That’s how I was first exposed to the performing arts. I value how much Arts & Lectures pours into local students.”

For the Primacks, Arts & Lectures quickly became a gateway to their new community. “Our son attended UCSB, and that’s what first introduced us to the area,” Andrew said. “We fell deeply in love with Arts & Lectures. This exposure to the arts and humanities is world-class.” Liisa, who spent two decades volunteering with The Music Center in Los Angeles, was drawn to the breadth of the programming. “We’re seeing the same concerts as audiences at Disney Concert Hall and discovering books we never would have picked up otherwise.” Beyond the performances, both couples found something they hadn’t expected: community. “The people are knowledgeable, welcoming, and come from a wide variety of backgrounds,” Nancy said. “Arts & Lectures expands your social circle,” Mike added. “We’ve become friends with people we otherwise would never have met.”

Jake Shimabukuro introduced hundreds of elementary students to the ukulele through a lively Arts Adventures concert. Back in the classroom, teachers reported that students were eager to learn more, with many expressing a newfound desire to pick up an instrument themselves.

“Everything about the concert was great! Amazing that an artist of his caliber would take the time to put on a free show for students! We love and appreciate that there was an opportunity to attend due to the [funding] you provided for busing!” Jake Shimabukuro Dec 10, 2025

More than 1,200 students at four elementary schools discovered the joy of creative storytelling as Story Pirates transformed student ideas into sketch comedy and song. A lively “Swing Makes You Sing” assembly at Goleta Valley Junior High School introduced students to the history and rhythm of American jazz. Members of Lila Downs’ band worked alongside students from La Cumbre Junior High School Jazz Band, giving them firsthand insight into performance and musicianship. A.I.M by Kyle Abraham dancers led San Marcos High School through a movement workshop exploring the company’s innovative approach to contemporary dance.

WHY WE SUPPORT A&L

A Legacy of Opening Doors to the Arts

photo: Grace Kathryn Photography

From New York to Santa Barbara, Maxine Prisyon’s commitment to arts education has spanned decades.

“Exposing young people to the arts is the future of the arts. They will grow up to be patrons, supporters and lovers of programs like Arts & Lectures.”

A&L Partner Maxine Prisyon and Milton Warshaw

Maxine Prisyon and her late husband, Milton, began supporting Arts & Lectures in 2007, drawn first to the performances on stage and then increasingly to A&L’s arts education programs. For Maxine, that work connected with a belief she had held for decades: young people need opportunities to encounter the arts. Long before she arrived in Santa Barbara, Maxine volunteered as an arts educator in New York, introducing children to dance, music, theater and museums. She saw firsthand that many young people – regardless of family income – simply lacked opportunities to experience the arts because no one had opened that door for them. That belief led Maxine and Milton to become early supporters of Arts & Lectures’ education programs through the William H. Kearns Foundation. Their support helped A&L expand opportunities for students to experience live performance and engage directly with visiting artists.

“Exposing young people to the arts is the future of the arts,” says Maxine. “They will grow up to be patrons, supporters and lovers of programs like Arts & Lectures.” Their involvement extended beyond philanthropy. Milton served on the Arts & Lectures Council, while Maxine has long been an A&L Ambassador, welcoming new patrons and sharing her enthusiasm for the organization with others. Reflecting on nearly two decades of partnership with the organization, Maxine says, “I’m proud of the work we’ve done with A&L over our many years of support for the arts education programs.” Their generosity has created a lasting legacy – one that continues to open doors for thousands of students and lifelong learners each year and will inspire future generations to experience, value and support the arts.

Arnhold Education Initiative Established in 2021 by a leadership gift from Jody and John Arnhold, the Arnhold Education Initiative has enabled A&L to deepen its signature cross-campus collaborations that connect world-class artists and thinkers with thousands of UCSB students each year.

Terence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane led a clinic with students from UCSB Jazz Ensemble. Compagnie Hervé Koubi members taught movement workshops for 50 dance students. Ezra Klein joined future climate leaders in a special Q&A with UCSB Yardi Scholars for Environmental Justice.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community & Lifelong Learning Some ideas deserve more than a single experience. Arts & Lectures’ community programs create more ways to engage – from post-show discussions, artist conversations and community classes to free films under the stars. Together, they offer opportunities to explore artists and ideas more deeply, try something new and celebrate the power of shared moments. Community dance classes and screenings included Dance on Film and classes with Ballet Preljocaj, Tango After Dark and New York City Ballet principal dancer Roman Mejia. Guided bird walks and educational hikes brought 160 participants into the region’s natural spaces in partnership with Santa Barbara Audubon and the UCSB Natural Reserve System. Music-focused experiences such as “Listening to Jazz” with Professor Jon Nathan and a Danish String Quartet pre-show talk offered audiences additional context for musical performance and history.

FREE Summer Cinema Each summer, Arts & Lectures transforms the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Garden into an open-air cinema, welcoming thousands of community members to the heart of downtown for free screenings under the stars.

WHY WE SUPPORT A&L

Investing in Community As A&L’s Community Partners, the Natalie Orfalea Foundation & Lou Buglioli have helped expand the reach of artists and ideas across Santa Barbara County. For Natalie Orfalea, philanthropy is about more than funding individual programs. It is an investment in the experiences and institutions that help communities thrive. That philosophy has shaped the Natalie Orfalea Foundation & Lou Buglioli’s nearly decade-long relationship with Arts & Lectures as Community Partners. “When you look at what makes a community thrive, it comes down to shared experiences, intellectual curiosity, and cultural equity,” Natalie reflects. “Arts & Lectures isn’t just a stage for world-class artists, public policy experts, and visionary thinkers. It’s a bridge that connects the Santa Barbara community with the world.”

Natalie Orfalea and Lou Buglioi with author Ezra Klein

Natalie’s involvement extends beyond philanthropy. As a member of the Arts & Lectures Council, she brings her perspective and experience to the organization and its leadership. “In times when public funding for the arts and education faces constant pressure, ensuring stability for programs that bring joy, heritage and dialogue to underserved communities is essential,” Natalie says. “Our partnership with Arts & Lectures allows us to invest in the collective heart, mind and future of Santa Barbara County.”

As A&L’s Community Partner, the foundation helps underwrite the cost of presenting artists and speakers as well as subsidized student tickets, expanding access to programs for students and the broader community.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025-2026, ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! (Viva) is an award-winning program presented by Arts & Lectures in partnership with Isla Vista School PTA, the Guadalupe Visual & Performing Arts Center, The Marjorie Luke Theatre and the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center. Each season, Viva brings acclaimed artists whose work reflects the rich cultural traditions of Latin America to our region for extended residencies that encompass

outreach in classrooms and community centers, as well as free public concerts. Created to fill a gap in Spanish-language cultural programming and arts education in Santa Barbara County, Viva serves four communities with large Spanishspeaking populations: Carpinteria, Santa Barbara’s Eastside, Isla Vista and Guadalupe. Artists perform and teach in schools and other neighborhood gathering places, making it easy for audiences to participate close to home. Ely Garcia

“It was only 15 years ago that I saw Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles in this very theater, The Marjorie Luke Theatre. I got so inspired to practice very hard to make my way to Mariachi Reyna, and I’m really proud to have been part of this year’s show.” – Ely Garcia 14

As a sixth grader, Ely Garcia attended a Viva performance and dreamed of one day joining Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles. More than a dozen years later, she returned to The Marjorie Luke Theatre – not as an audience member, but as a performer with the very ensemble that first inspired her.
