Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre King Lear Bill Buckhurst, Director

THU, NOV 20 & FRI, NOV 21 / 8 PM / CAMPBELL HALL $55 / $30 / $19 all students

“No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear.” – George Bernard Shaw, playwright The world-renowned Globe Theatre returns with a vivid and arresting new production of what many call Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. Old King Lear proposes to give up his crown and divide his kingdom between his three daughters, but his rash generosity is cruelly repaid. Lear discovers too late the falseness of the values by which he has lived and, in turn, the suffering shared by all humanity. With its tempestuous poetry, flashes of humor and heart-rending themes, King Lear is one of the deepest artistic explorations of the human condition. Joseph Marcell (from the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) plays Lear.

Exploring the Red Planet SUN, NOV 23 / 3 PM / CAMPBELL HALL $25 / $15 UCSB students and youths (18 & under)

Few events in the last decade of space exploration have captured the world’s imagination like NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. The recent landing of Curiosity, aka the Mars Science Laboratory, made headlines after it turned up evidence of life-supporting conditions on Mars, including water. Kobie Boykins has a boundless enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries of outer space, and Mars in particular, that’s infectious. The NASA engineer helped design solar arrays for previous rovers and now supervises Curiosity’s mobility and remote sensing teams. Join Boykins for an engaging afternoon exploring the Red Planet, with an update on the very latest chapter in the ongoing story of Mars exploration.

Join Mike as he gets arrested in New Jersey, screamed at by a famous director, heckled by Statler and Waldorf, and attacked by zombie rodents. Ira Glass of public radio’s This American Life writes, “Birbiglia’s stories are even funnier live than they are on the radio.” Time magazine calls Birbiglia “master of the personal, embarrassing tale.” The New York Times describes him as a “supremely enjoyable monologist.”
