ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROUDLY WELCOMES NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN BILL PETERSON Adopt-A-Family is thrilled to announce that board member and long-time supporter, Bill Peterson, has assumed the role of board chairman effective July 1, 2017. Mr. Peterson has been a dedicated member of Adopt-A-Family’s board of directors for a number of years, most recently serving as first vice chair.

After a decades-long career in broadcast news and television, Mr. Peterson retired in 2009 as Senior Vice President/Television Station Group for the E.W. Scripps Company. Prior to his time at Scripps, he served as Vice President/General Manager of Scripps-owned WPTV NewsChannel 5 in West Palm Beach. He also held similar roles at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, NC, WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, and WTKR-TV in Norfolk, VA. Mr. Peterson’s community leadership in Palm Beach County spans nearly three decades. He served as a long-time member of United Way of Palm Beach County’s board of directors and as the annual campaign chairman in 1992, which was the first county-wide campaign. He has also served as chairman of LISC Palm Beach County, which built hundreds of affordable housing units in Palm Beach County.

“My wife Kathy became an Adopt-A-Family volunteer more than twenty years ago and we both were impressed with its culture of care for clients and efficiency in its operations,” shared Mr. Peterson. “I am honored to serve with a most impressive board of directors with members of varied expertise and ability; all of whom hold a common commitment and respect for our clients and donors.” – Bill Peterson Bill and his wife Kathleen have two adult children and reside in West Palm Beach, Florida. We are excited for the wealth of knowledge, leadership experience, and expertise Mr. Peterson will bring to his term as board chairman!

A DREAM IS WITHIN REACH THANKS TO SERVICE ENRICHED HOUSING

When Darniece first stepped into her new apartment at Adopt-A-Family, her eyes lit up with excitement. For a number of months, home wasn’t a certainty for Darniece and her three children, ranging in ages from eight to thirteen. On this day, she knew she was finally home. Prior to joining Adopt-A-Family’s homeownership program, Service Enriched Housing, Darniece was living day-to-day at a local motel, lacking the stability necessary for a healthy home environment. This past spring, Darniece received a call from Adopt-A-Family informing her that there was an opening in Service Enriched Housing.

She hasn’t looked back since.

Today, Darniece and her children have moved into a beautiful apartment at Adopt-A-Family, newly renovated thanks to a generous grant award from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. “My goal is to buy a home and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the program,” shared Darniece. “To have a case manager in my corner helping me to navigate the challenges and complexities of credit, in addition to setting a realistic budget, I’m certain my financial goals and dream of homeownership will be in reach.” Darniece is a shift supervisor at a local Lake Worth business and is on track to advance to a store supervisor or director position soon.

When she speaks about her three children, her face brightens with a smile. “Brianna, my 13-year-old, loves school. She’s made honor roll for the past three years. The same goes for my 8-year-old,” said Darniece.

“My ten-year-old son James, on the other hand, has historically struggled in school, but this year he made a great deal of progress and worked hard toward making gains in reading and writing. The highlights of his year were making the honor roll for the first time and being selected for safety patrol! I’m excited for my kids and their future. I couldn’t be a prouder mom.”

ADOPT-A-FAMILY SELECTED FOR INNOVATIVE ART DISPLAY IN DOWNTOWN WEST PALM BEACH We are excited to announce that Adopt-A-Family was one of 25 local nonprofits selected to participate in the City of West Palm Beach’s Summer in Paradise “Aesop’s Tables” program presented by the Art in Public Places Program. Twenty-five amazing local artists were selected to hand paint picnic tables illustrating collections of timeless Aesop’s Fables. These colorful tables were on display June 1st through August 31st on the West Palm Beach waterfront. Palm Beach County artist, Sharon Koskoff, brought the illustration of ‘The Mischievous Dog’ to life!

BANK OF AMERICA HOSTS SPECIAL MOVIE NIGHT WHILE RENEWING SUPPORT OF WILEY REYNOLDS GARDENS APARTMENTS On June 2nd, Bank of America volunteers hosted and sponsored a special “School’s Out” edition of Movie Night on the Turf. Our children and families were treated to snow cones, freshly popped popcorn, healthy juice, and pizza from Lake Worth’s Downtown Pizza. We are so grateful for the energy and enthusiasm of the Bank of America volunteers who provided a memorable and fun-filled evening for our 63 attendees.

Prior to the event, the Bank of America team presented us with a generous grant award check in support of Wiley Reynolds Gardens Apartments. The program provides safe and affordable housing paired with supportive services to nine formerly homeless families.

WILEY REYNOLDS SOCIETY RECOGNIZES THE DONAHUE FAMILY & ALICE TARONE On April 25th, Adopt-A-Family hosted its Second Annual Wiley Reynolds Society recognition event at the beautiful Hilton West Palm Beach. Named after visionary supporter Wiley Reynolds, the society is comprised of friends of Adopt-A-Family who have contributed more than $100,000 and share Mr. Reynolds’ passion to positively impact the lives of others. In addition to honoring an esteemed Wiley Reynolds Society member each year, the event also formally recognizes an impressive volunteer with the distinguished Crystal Castor Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The evening’s honorees were Jayne and Tim Donahue (Wiley Reynolds Society Acknowledgement of Appreciation) and Alice Tarone (The Crystal Castor Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service).

For nearly two decades, Jayne and Tim Donahue have played a pivotal role in our agency’s ability to transform the lives of thousands of Palm Beach County families. Their powerful and tireless commitment to our mission has allowed us to achieve our vision in ways we never thought possible. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the Donahue’s profound devotion and caring spirit towards the families we proudly serve.

The word “strong” barely begins to describe Alice Tarone. For many years, Mrs. Tarone has been the driving force behind AdoptA-Family’s fundraising efforts. She is one of our many angels who unselfishly gives of her time, talent, and resources. She is an example of fortitude and grace and is truly an inspiration to all who know her.

Thank you to our honorees for playing such a vital role in providing a brighter future for so many Palm Beach County families in need.

THE HONDA CLASSIC RENEWS FUNDING SUPPORT OF PROJECT GROW We’re thankful for The Honda Classic’s continued investment in Adopt-A-Family’s Project Grow. This summer, we welcomed Executive Director Ken Kennerly and the Honda Classic Cares team for a behindthe-scenes tour of all three summer camp classrooms. The morning also included a check presentation with our K-1st grade students! In 2017, The Honda Classic made a philanthropic impact of $3.6 million to benefit charitable causes in South Florida.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY SUPPORTERS LEAD STRONG 2017 GREAT GIVE FUNDRAISING EFFORT We are thankful for more than 150 friends of Adopt-A-Family who supported us during this year’s Great Give. Thanks to you, more than $25,000 was raised to support our summer camp and programs that work to end and prevent homelessness for Palm Beach County families. Out of 415 participating charities in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, you led us to a 3rd place finish for total unique donations.

Special thanks to our Great Give partner, C.W.S. Lake Worth, for sponsoring a one-of-a-kind event and providing a dedicated space for Adopt-A-Family donors to enjoy the evening and celebrate the spirit of giving together. More than 75 Adopt-A-Family friends and donors attended throughout the night. We’re grateful for the four Great Give host partners: United Way of Palm Beach County, Nonprofits First, Achieve, and United Way of Martin County for making it a special year!

PROJECT GROW SUMMER CAMP SPOTLIGHT Summer 2017 in Project Grow has been a blast! Thanks to dedicated supporters and funders, Project Grow campers have embarked on more than a dozen exciting field trips which included: Miami Seaquarium, Lion Country Safari, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Fun Depot, Butterfly World, and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science. The campers also took an educational field trip to the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach. The museum is dedicated to discovering, collecting, and sharing the African-American history and heritage of Palm Beach County. Our students enjoyed learning about the impact of Solomon D. Spady, a prominent African American educator and community leader in the early-middle 20th century. The museum is the only one of its kind in Palm Beach County and is a true community treasure.

IMPACT CORNER SAVE THE DATES TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION

The 33rd Annual Tree Lighting Celebration will take place on Tuesday, December 5th, at the Sailfish Club of Florida. Tickets are $350.
