A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO AND BOARD PRESIDENT My journey with Adopt-A-Family began thirteen years ago when I was hired as a case manager for one of the agency’s homeless prevention programs. I was attracted to the agency’s culture of compassion and altruism. This year I was appointed CEO. In this role, I am tasked with ensuring that the agency’s vision, values, and principles are adhered to and enhanced. This new role would not be possible without the support of our staff, board of directors, community partners, and the families we serve.

We are proud to report that our agency continues to flourish; and, more importantly, we remain a vital source of support to vulnerable families in Palm Beach County.

In the 2013 – 2014 fiscal year, Adopt-A-Family helped 1,742 families. The agency operates nine programs designed to holistically address barriers to self-sufficiency. This report outlines our noteworthy successes over the past year, highlighting accomplishments such as: • 9 8%

As we enter the 2014 – 2015 fiscal year, we have a tremendous amount of momentum. Plans are underway to enhance our Project Grow space and to develop additional housing for families in need. While we pursue these exciting opportunities, we will continue to do what we do best: operate efficient and effective programs with the goal of improving the lives of the families we serve.

PROGRAMS THE HOUSING STABILIZATION PROGRAM (HSP) is a homeless prevention program that serves

a motel or referred to a partner family shelter. Once the immediate need is met, they may be eligible for Rapid Re-housing. The family would work with a Housing Specialist to find housing in which they can regain stability. Once housed the family would work with a Family Advocate to confront and overcome barriers that have prevented the family from remaining housed in the past. Families whose support system is outside of Palm Beach County may opt to take advantage of a program in which Adopt-A-Family is able to assist reunifying the family with their support system.

From July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014, HSP assisted 112 families (accounting for 142 adults and 280 children) in avoiding becoming homeless.

Adopt-A-Family’s unique homeless prevention program has maintained support from public entities and garnered the attention of prominent private foundations.

The Lewis Center is open seven days/week and 365 days/year.

PROJECT GROW is dedicated to improving the lives of children in Kindergarten through 5th grade in an afterschool, educational setting. This program is customized to meet the unique challenges that formerly homeless and very low income children face. Project Grow builds on the children’s social, emotional, and educational skills to not only address their specific needs, but also instill the self-confidence necessary for a healthy childhood. Recently Project Grow has introduced children to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) fields to expand future educational and career possibilities. Despite 45% of students not being on track for promotion at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, program intervention and academic support services enabled 98% of the Project Grow students to achieve successful promotion to their next grade level at the end of the year.

SENATOR PHILIP D. LEWIS CENTER HOMELESS RESOURCE CENTER opened its

doors on July 2, 2012 as a centralized point of entry for homeless families and individuals in need of services in Palm Beach County. This is a county facility run with the collaboration of many agencies including Palm Beach County, Gulfstream Goodwill Industries, AdoptA-Family of the Palm Beaches, The Lord’s Place, and the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County.

Adopt-A-Family runs programs to shelter and house families who find themselves without a place to live. After being assessed by Adopt-A-Family, and depending on the situation, families may be placed in

A Place Called Home

Project Grow has maintained the highest rating category of “Maintenance Level” since inception of the levels in 2010. By the end of summer 2014, the Project Grow playground will be transformed into a space that includes a state-of-the-art, all-purpose turf and a new basketball court. This will dramatically improve the green space for our children.

PROJECT SAFE (STABLE ABLE FAMILY ENVIRONMENT)

Project Grow, full STEAM ahead!

The first housing program of Adopt-A-Family, Project SAFE provides homeless families the opportunity to reside in safe, permanent, affordable housing. Residents are referred to project SAFE from Palm Beach County’s Lewis Center. The head of household must have a disability which impedes the ability to live independently.

To address the barriers and challenges families are encountering, intensive support services are offered— including case management, advocacy, budgeting, mental health counseling, access to education and job training, financial literacy, and childcare—all designed to help clients become self-sufficient. All families must either be attending school and/or working while in the program.

SERVICE ENRICHED HOUSING (SEH) is a residential program serving families who earn less than 200% of the federal poverty level and who are on the path to homeownership. The program consists of 28 two-bedroom apartment units located adjacent to the agency’s Family Resource Center in Lake Worth. Rent is calculated at 30% of gross income, but families residing in SEH pay a base rent of $525.00, while depositing the remainder of the 30% into an escrow account. The residents then use their escrow account to address their credit obstacles, down payment, and closing costs toward the purchase of a home. To assist these residents in addressing their obstacles to home ownership, each family receives comprehensive housing and credit counseling.

NEIGHBORHOOD STABILIZATION PROGRAM 2 (NSP2)

Adopt-A-Family, as a partner in the Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), received approximately seven million dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in January of 2010 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Adopt-A-Family rehabilitated and sold 17 homes in the neighboring community to households earning 120% and below Palm Beach County’s Area Median Income (AMI) and created 24 affordable rental units to house families earning 50% and below the AMI. NSP2 has allowed Adopt-A-Family to offer additional affordable housing options for Palm Beach County families in need. Supportive services are offered to all NSP2 rental households. The NSP2 Housing Coordinator maintains monthly contact with households to check-in and provide case management and referrals as needed.

A Place Called Home (APCH) is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-funded permanent supportive housing program for families living with pervasive disabilities. Homeless families with disabilities are assessed and referred by the Senator Phillip D. Lewis Center and are placed in two- or three-bedroom apartments or houses in Lake Worth, FL. The program enables special needs families to live as independently as possible.

Eligible homeless families have the opportunity to live in safe, quality, and affordable housing, while also being able to access supportive services that will help them reach self-sufficiency. Rent for families is limited to 30% of their gross income. The coordination of social services for these nine families is provided through Project Connect Collaborative (PCC) – a partnership between Adopt-A-Family and Families First of Palm Beach County.

APCH offers parenting classes, job training, afterschool programming, financial capability courses, and nutrition counseling to clients in the program. These supportive services are offered by partner agencies including Clear Point, Community Partners, Boys Town, local universities and colleges, and Gulfstream Goodwill. These services complement housing-based case management offered by the full-time case manager strictly dedicated to the families of APCH. Families work closely with the case manager to design “Family Action Plans” that are tailored to each family’s goals and needs.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 29TH ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION

Adopt-A-Family truly appreciates the hard work, creativity and dedication of those who serve on the Tree Lighting committee. Subcommittee chairmen for this year were Alice Tarone and Didi Smith (silent auction); Penny Heller and Sherry Hay (live auction); and Carolyn Haggerty (centerpieces).

On Tuesday, December 3, Adopt-A-Family hosted its 29th Annual Tree Lighting Celebration at The Sailfish Club of Florida. The evening included a holiday gourmet dinner, a large silent auction with beautiful holiday decor, magnificent orchids, and a live auction.

Tree Lighting bustled with 220 guests.

The additional dedicated and talented individuals serving on this year’s committee included: Judy Backstrom, Trudy Brekus, Lori Corrigan, Hermé de Wyman Miro, Jen Dudnyk, April Finch, Karen Fischer, Susan Ford, Mari Frankel, Julie Gambale, Dona Gibbs, Ann Jaeder, Carol Jeney, Nancy Kalaher, Arlinda Marrano, Marietta Muiña McNulty, Paula Michel, Bel Miller, Carol Nolan, Chris Oberlink, Debby Parr, Kathy Peterson, Jennifer Ribek, Annette Rickel, Patty Rodgers, Adele Siegel, Nancy Siegel, Stephanie Smith, Anita Tauber, and Barbara Thomas.

The event is made possible due to the many sponsors and underwriters, especially Grand Benefactors Linda and Edward Edelman, and The Edward L. Hennessy, Jr. & Ruth S. Hennessy Foundation, and Grand Sponsors Sherry and Lewis Hay. Edward and Ruth Hennessy, long-time supporters of the agency, also served as Honorary Chairmen, and their daughter Beth Hennessy was Tree Lighting Chairman.

In December 2013, Adopt-A-Family earned its 7th consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

Receiving 4 out of a possible 4 stars indicates that Adopt-A-Family adheres to good governance and other best practices as well as executing our mission in a sound and fiscally responsible way.

Only 2% of charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least 7 consecutive 4-star evaluations. This “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Adopt-A-Family from other agencies and proves to the public it is worthy of its trust.

DUCKY DERBY 2014

Nearly 10,000 yellow rubber ducks made a big difference for homeless families here in Palm Beach County. The 2nd annual Adopt-A-Family Ducky Derby took place in Downtown Lake Worth on Sunday, March 16 as part of the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. For $5, anyone could “Adopt-A-Duck” and have the chance to win the $5,000 Grand Prize and other awesome prizes. A special pond was created for the ducks who swam adjacent to Dave’s Last Resort Restaurant, who was a sponsor of the festivities. Local celebrity Greg Rice, emceed the random plucking of the winning ducks. The $25,000 raised will help Adopt-A-Family continue to provide programs and services for local families in crisis.

2014 BETTER BALL INVITATIONAL

The third annual Better Ball Invitational, held on April 28, was played at the exclusive Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach. Eighty players enjoyed an afternoon of lunch, 18 holes of golf with carts and a forecaddie, and an awards ceremony to wrap up the festivities. Nick Coniglio and Cachi Garcie Valez were the winning team.

Congratulations to the tournament committee—Sean Bresnan, Tom Frankel, Gary Pohrer, Frank Bresnan, Joe Carron, Joe LaRocca Jr., and Jeff Preston for planning such a great day of golf. Thanks to the support of the players and tournament sponsors, a record-breaking $60,000 was raised to support programs that provide housing, rental assistance and supportive services to homeless families and families at risk of homelessness.

GREAT GIVE

Thanks to all of the donations received during Great Give Palm Beach and Martin Counties. On Tuesday, May 6, the agency raised over $22,000. Through 89 eligible gifts and matching funds, the agency placed 7th out of 330 local participating organizations. The money raised was used in part to support Adopt-A-Family’s housing programs. Thank you to The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, United Way of Palm Beach County and United Way of Martin County for spearheading this tremendous event which raised more than $2.2 million for participating local non-profits.

2ND ANNUAL PHYSICIANS TALENT SHOWCASE

The 2nd annual Physicians Talent Showcase raised over $34,000 for Adopt-A-Family’s Project Grow Program.

I came to Adopt-A-Family’s Service Enriched Housing Program at a dark time in my life. My two sons and I were sharing a room at a friend’s home and she needed us to move but we had nowhere to go. I had a steady job in the health care industry but was having hard time finding a place I could afford. The Service Enriched Housing program helped me to repair my credit and save money to purchase a home. I reached the goal I came to the program for: I purchased a home for me and my boys! I couldn’t have done it without Adopt-A-Family.

After four months of living in a domestic violence shelter with my two sons, I started to doubt my decision to leave my abuser. As anxiety and worry began to take over, I received the call from Adopt-A-Family informing me about available housing. My life has changed drastically since moving into A Place Called Home. I am employed, attending college and have reliable transportation. My two boys are so happy, and at times I still cannot believe it! I could not have done any of this without the love and support of Adopt-A-Family.

I don’t need to worry about my homework because the Project Grow teachers help me with my homework by giving me clues and explaining it. When I go back to school my teacher is proud of me because I worked hard to finish my homework and it’s right. My favorite subjects are reading, writing, and science.
