Stonewall Inn

IIn the 1950-60s, showing affection to another of the same sex was illegal in most of the United States. On June 28, 1969, police officers began one of their raids on the Stonewall Inn because it was a safe space for homosexuals. The crowd of ejected people and residents of Greenwich Village gathered around Stonewall Inn and started fighting back against the police in an act of civil disobedience.

In 1970 there was a parade honoring Stonewall Inn and LGBTQ+ life and culture. In 2016, president Barack Obama put a plaque on the Stonewall Inn site honoring those who fought and LGBTQ+ people.
