A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP The Responsibility Revolution

“IT DEMANDS THAT COMPANIES MAKE

a difference to society, through their manufacturing methods and operating systems, through their environmental efforts, and community outreach. If you are not paying attention to this revolution, you and your company may be running out of time to participate and thrive in the post-revolution era.” This is what best-selling author Tim Sanders said when he addressed our Academy at the AACD 26th Annual Scientific Session, in Grapevine, Texas. We also learned that 65 percent of American consumers would switch brands if associated with a good cause and if price and quality were comparable. He challenged us, by promising an autographed copy of his new book to anyone in attendance who would volunteer to help our Foundation. Mr. Sanders was moved by the Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program. He found the program to be a perfect fit for cosmetic dentistry professionals with the special talent and skill we possess for addressing the needs of survivors with damaged smiles due to intimate partner abuse.

In the book, Greater Than Yourself—the Ultimate Lesson of True Leadership, Steve Farber explains, “The goal of true leadership is to help others; teammates, employees, colleagues, to become more capable, confident, and accomplished than their leaders.” Another reason why the GBAS program is the perfect opportunity for every dentist who is the leader of his/her team.

I am pleased to report that, due to the combined efforts of our volunteer Board of Trustees focused totally on the GBAS program, Foundation records have been set for the number of survivors of intimate partner violence served and for donated dentistry services provided. These record numbers are the result of the outpouring of support from many volunteer dentists, laboratories, supply companies, and their teams.

With such generous volunteers and an efficient Foundation, paid administrative staff has been kept to a minimum. Every dollar donated to the Foundation is worth 16 times that in dental services donated. For fiscal year 2009-2010, the average value of dental services donated to each program recipient was more than $8,000 totaling over $1.8 million in services!

When the question was posed as to what more can we do for survivors of intimate partner violence, the response was to expand our services. The Foundation now offers career assistance to our GBAS program recipients.

This service aids recipients with job interview preparation and provides scholarships for higher and continuing education.

To increase awareness of the GBAS program, we extend our thanks to Mr. Fred Joyal from 1-800-DENTIST, and Dr. Bill Dorfman, for producing a public service announcement which is currently being tested in crucial areas around the country.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF COSMETIC DENTISTRY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION’S MISSION The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation’s (AACDCF) mission is to assist in rebuilding the lives and dignity of survivors of domestic violence through compassionate cosmetic dental services and support programs.

Our program provides restorative and cosmetic dentistry in the smile zone at no cost to qualified survivors through our nationwide network of volunteer cosmetic dentists and our support team of laboratories and dental manufacturers.

GBAS Program Recipients Since 1999, the GBAS program has restored lives by restoring the damaged smiles of adult women and men who have received dental injuries from a former intimate partner or spouse. Since the inception of the program, generous volunteer dentists, laboratory technicians, specialists, and supply companies have restored smiles to more than 950 survivors of intimate partner violence.

WORDS FROM A SURVIVOR Barbara survived severe physical and emotional abuse from her ex-husband of 18 years, which caused her to lose several teeth. GBAS Volunteer, Dr. John Ames, along with his office team, volunteer laboratory, Yes! Dental Lab, and oral surgeon Dr. Howard Stevenson, restored her smile and—in many ways— her life.

WHITENING FUNDRAISER The year-round GBAS Whitening Fundraiser, sponsored by Discus Dental and Ultradent Products, Inc., allows dental offices to offer whitening treatments to their patients with the proceeds directly supporting the AACDCF. This year, 23 offices participated in the fundraiser raising $29,228.

The challenge raised $24,439 and the top three challenge winners were:

WHITENING CHALLENGE As a highlight of the Whitening Fundraiser, the Second Annual Whitening Challenge was held September 1st, 2009 – March 31st, 2010. AACD members were challenged to participate in this competition to raise funds for the AACDCF.

Challenge winners were awarded prizes generously donated by Discus Dental, LK Dental Studio, Preferred Dental Ceramics, Professional Dental Arts, Relache Spa at Gaylord Texan Resort, and Saigon Block Restaurant.
