I

n 25 years, 356 members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry have completed its rigorous credentialing process. It’s the rarified air of dentistry’s most accomplished practitioners and laboratory technicians.

The process is designed to give dental professionals the chance to learn, grow and interact with colleagues working toward the same goal. It requires successful completion of a written examination, an oral examination, and multiple clinical case submissions.

Becoming an AACD Accredited dentist or laboratory technician helps provide better care to their patients and clients and distinguishes their practices and labs within their communities.

While becoming an Accredited member is a significant accomplishment, there is more—becoming an Accredited Fellow!

Fellowship is the highest level of achievement in the AACD credentialing process.

Only 58 members in history have achieved this status. In 2012, we warmly welcomed two new members to Accredited Fellow status—Drs. C. Lee Wyant and Susan Hollar.

A graduate of Baylor College of Dentistry, Dr. Susan Hollar maintains a private practice in Arlington, Texas where she limits her practice to reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry. She is an Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a Pankey Scholar.

Dr. Hollar serves as visiting faculty with the L.D. Pankey Instititute and the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry.

She is an Accreditation Examiner with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a board member of the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry, and past editor of the Accreditation Essentials for the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. C. Lee Wyant is an Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Wyant has been a member of the Academy since 1996 and obtained Accredited Member status in 2001. A graduate of LSU School of Dentistry, he has practiced comprehensive restorative and esthetic dentistry in Little Rock, Arkansas since 1982.

Dr. Wyant has been actively involved in the AACD, serving on the AACD Charitable Foundation Board of Trustees, as a speaker and speaker host. Dr. Wyant is also a Give Back a Smile volunteer who has completed several cosmetic cases for women who were battered as the result of domestic violence. Dr. David K. Chan earned his DMD degree in 1989 from the Oregon Health Sciences University Dental School in Portland, Oregon.

After completing a post-graduate residency program at the University of Iowa, he returned to practice in the state of Washington. Dr. Chan is a graduate of the Kois Center and serves as president of the Northwest Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, an AACD affiliate cosmetic dental study club in his home town. He currently maintains a full-time practice with an emphasis on cosmetic and comprehensive dentistry located in Vancouver, Washington.

Todd Cochran has been a laboratory technician for 19 years. He started Horizon Dental Studio, Inc. in 2003 which specializes in cosmetic and implant dentistry. Todd has lectured locally and nationally on the topics of cosmetic and implant dentistry. Todd and his wife Christi have four boys and they enjoy many outdoor activities such as; skiing, snowboarding, and watching baseball. Todd is an avid golfer and spends much of his free time on the golf course.

Mr. Decker has been a laboratory technician for more than 35 years.

In 1977, he and his cousin started their own lab in Clyde, North Carolina. In 1982, he became sole owner and received his CDT certificate in 1985. Mr. Decker is a proud Christian, to which he acknowledges all of his successes in life and business. He and his wife have three children and four grandchildren and enjoy many activities that include them.

Dr. Chiann Fan Gibson was born in Tokyo, Japan and is the daughter of Taiwanese parents, who immigrated to America with less than $200 and unable to speak English. Dr. Gibson received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Washington and her Doctorate of Dentistry from Tufts School of Dental Medicine. She served on the AACD Board of Directors from 2009-2011. Chiann and her husband, Jim Gibson are actively involved in numerous church and charitable organizations. Chiann believes that “The American Dream is alive and well for those who dare to reach for it!” which exemplifies Chiann’s spirit and success.

Dr. Gesica Horn is a family, restorative and cosmetic dentist in North Oaks, Minnesota. She graduated from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Dr. Horn is active in several study clubs and with evolving techniques in the field of dentistry she has made it a personal responsibility to stay on the cutting edge of dental technology and training. She enjoys playing golf, traveling, training for marathons and spending time at the lake with family and friends. Dr. Horn, her husband Chad, and their two children reside in North Oaks, Minnesota.

Dr. Phillip Kemp is a graduate of the University of Tennessee Dental School and has been practicing family and cosmetic dentistry in the Nashville area for more than 20 years. Dr. Kemp serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee’s College of Dentistry. He has been a member of the AACD Board of Trustees, Professional Education Committee, and Chairman of AACD’s Give Back a Smile Domestic Violence Committee.

Dr. Kemp is the Founder and President of Hope Smiles Foundation, a Christian non-profit organization. He lives in Brentwood with his wife, Rhonda, and their four children.

Lonnie Lee is a dedicated ceramistartisan and multi-dimensional technologist. Widely renowned for his passion and ability to organize and present multiple aspects of technical and clinical dentistry utilizing proven, evidence-based principles and methodology. Lonnie currently serves as Director of Professional Relations at Knight Dental Group (KDG) in Oldsmar, Florida. He remains a prime influence for essential dental team relations, including coordination of advanced diagnostic and functional esthetic process learning and application methods at KDG’s nationally acclaimed Comprehensive Aesthetic Center.

Dr. Pitts graduated in 1988 from Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

She continued on with her postdoctoral residency in general dentistry advanced education. She received her Doctor of Science Degree in Advanced Restorative Dentistry from Boston University.

She served as an associate dentist in Orlando, Florida from 19952000 and presently maintains a private practice in Lake Mary, Florida. Dr. Pitts became an Accredited dentist of the AACD in 2007 and an Accredited Fellow in 2008. She lives in central Florida with her husband Charles, their Persian cat and an adopted Greyhound. Some of her hobbies include decorating, painting, drawing, graphic design and shooting. She was the college games champion marksman.

Dr. Lauren Shanard graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry. She moved to the Burlington, Vermont area and joined a multi-specialty group practice and ultimately opened Contemporary Dental Arts. Her practice is devoted to reconstructive, esthetic, and implant dentistry. She has been an AACD member since 2004 and is past President and member of the New England Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Shanard lives in Burlington, Vermont with her son Jacob. She is an expert alpine skier and enjoys boating and water skiing. Dr. Shanard is an avid runner, an occasionally inspired chef, and enjoys listening to jazz.

Dr. Todd C. Snyder received his doctorate in dental surgery at the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry. He went on to graduate from the prestigious F.A.C.E. institute for complex gnathological (functional) and temporomandibular joint disorders.

Dr. Snyder lectures on numerous aspects of dental materials, techniques, occlusion, equipment and brand/media marketing. He has been on the faculty at U.C.L.A. in the Center for Esthetic Dentistry and is currently on the faculty at Esthetic Professionals. Dr. Snyder is an international author and lecturer.

Dr. Ali Tunkiwala received his Bachelors Degree in dental surgery from Nair Hospital Dental College, University of Mumbai. He pursued his Masters Degree in prosthetic dentistry from the Govt. Dental College and Hospital affiliated to the University of Mumbai. He is a Diplomate in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and a Fellow in the Indian Society of Oral Implantologists. The passion he has for a variety of charitable activities and social causes is associated through the Rotary Club of Bombay Bandra. He enjoys cycling and scrabbling and spending quality time with his wife and two beautiful daughters.

Ossie is a native South Carolinian who has lived in Washington for 33 years. He was first introduced to dentistry in the United States Navy. He attended Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Washington and ultimately opened Vereen Dental Technology. He is a graduate of the Dawson Academy and Kois Center. In recent years Ossie suffered a stroke which threatened his life, business, and profession; but with perseverance and faith in God, he is on the mend. When he is not in the lab, he enjoys traveling, listening to audio books, biking, playing basketball, and exercising. His newest hobby is ballroom dancing with Darlene, his wife of 23 years.

ccreditation is a true reflection of the collaborative spirit that fuels the Academy. It’s education, inspiration, motivation, and profitability. If you are not already in the process, set a goal to become Accredited. If you are not an Accredited Fellow, set a goal to become an Accredited Fellow, not for status or recognition, but for the enhanced clinical skills you will gain. It’s not just about the credential, it’s about the knowledge you will gain along the way.
