The Journey Ahead

A Commitment That Drives Us:

Safety on Every Road

For over 120 years, AAA has been synonymous with mobility, and that legacy began with a simple, yet profound purpose: safe roads and safe travel. Founded in 1902, the auto club’s initial mission was to lobby for better road infrastructure, advocate for common-sense traffic laws and protect the rights of motorists as America transitioned into the automobile age. This commitment to safe mobility is the bedrock of everything we do.

AAA has grown exponentially over the decades — nationally and here in Central Pennsylvania — expanding to offer everything from emergency roadside assistance and insurance to travel planning and financial services. Still, safety remains the cornerstone of our organization. The products and services we offer, and every policy we champion, ultimately tie back to our core principle of protecting our members and the public. We understand that a tow service gets you off the side of a dangerous highway, but prevention through advocacy is what keeps you and your loved ones out of harm’s way in the first place.

This unwavering focus translates into advocacy for safe mobility laws and policies. AAA Central Penn is deeply involved in efforts of the Pennsylvania AAA Federation, which promotes the enactment of laws designed to create a safer driving environment for everyone.

A recent success is the passing of Pennsylvania’s Slow Down, Move Over law in 2021. The law protects tow truck operators, emergency responders and roadside workers who risk their lives to help others. It requires motorists to slow down or change lanes when they see a vehicle with flashing lights on the roadside. The AAA roadside team and contractor network respond to over 30 million calls for help each year, often working on roadside shoulders no wider than four feet. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research, a roadside assistance responder is struck and killed by a passing vehicle about every two weeks.

We are also tirelessly advocating for a primary seat belt enforcement law in Pennsylvania. Research consistently shows that states with primary enforcement — where an officer can stop a driver solely for an observed belt violation — have significantly higher seat belt usage rates and lower fatality rates. This simple, effective legislative change can save thousands of lives annually.

Additionally, we are on the front lines of the fight against impaired driving. We strongly support rigorous enforcement, technologies like ignition interlock devices and better training for law enforcement to recognize impairment, especially as new challenges like marijuanaimpaired driving emerge. We also continue to push for stable, reliable transportation funding because safe roads and bridges require consistent, long-term investment.

While you may know us best for the peace of mind our emergency roadside service offers, know that the heart of AAA Central Penn and AAA across the nation beats strongest in our support for safe travel. Even as we expand and innovate, our original mission of safety is, and always will be, our heritage, our commitment and

The 119th Annual Meeting of AAA Central Penn will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Please contact Executive Assistant Karen Hill at khill@aaacp.com or 800-421-4552 for more details.

AAA Cares About Our Community

AAA Central Penn Closes for

Third Annual MLK Day of Service

At AAA Central Penn, giving back isn’t just a value — it’s a tradition. For the third consecutive year, all 10 branch locations will close on Monday, January 19, to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a united day of service.

Making Strides

This annual initiative reflects Dr. King’s enduring message of social justice, compassion and community empowerment. Instead of reporting to their usual posts, AAA Central Penn employees will spend the day volunteering at local food banks, volunteer fire departments, Habitat for Humanity build sites and other local nonprofits across the region.

Together, staff members aim to contribute more than 1,000 hours of service, making a meaningful impact in the communities they serve.

While branches will be closed, essential staff will remain available to assist members with roadside service. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, January 20.

Against Breast Cancer

AAA Central Penn is stepping up in the fight against breast cancer. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk takes place each October in Harrisburg, raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and patient support services. AAA’s sponsorship helps cover event costs, provides shopping bags for use at the merchandise tent and supports the mission of the American Cancer Society.

This year, AAA Central Penn added a special touch: Pink visors were donated to anyone who spent $20 or more at the merchandise tent, helping participants show their support in style while contributing to a great cause.

“As a company deeply rooted in the Harrisburg community, we’re honored to support this vital cause,” said Jodie Daubert, President and CEO of AAA Central Penn. “Breast cancer affects so many families, including those of our employees. We’re committed to making a difference.”

Event organizers praised AAA’s support, highlighting how corporate partnerships amplify the impact of grassroots efforts in the fight against breast cancer.

Give Your Old Phone a New Purpose:

Support Cell Phones for Soldiers

In a world where technology evolves rapidly, many of us upgrade our phones and tablets regularly — leaving perfectly usable devices tucked away in drawers. But what if those old gadgets could do more than collect dust? What if they could help a soldier stay connected to loved ones?

That’s the mission of Cell Phones for Soldiers , a national nonprofit founded in 2004 by two teenagers with a big idea: turn unused electronics into free communication for active-duty military members and veterans. The organization collects gently used cell phones, tablets and MP3 players, refurbishes them and sells them to recycling companies. The proceeds fund prepaid international calling cards for troops stationed overseas.

AAA Central Penn is proud to serve as a local donation center for this meaningful cause. You can drop off:

• Cell phones (working or broken)

• Tablets

• MP3 players

• Accessories like chargers and cases

AAA Central Penn will cover all shipping and handling costs, making it easy for you to give back.

Your old device may seem insignificant — but to a soldier far from home, it can mean everything. By donating, you’re not just recycling electronics — you’re helping bridge the distance between service members and their families.

Next time you upgrade, don’t toss — donate . Give your device a second life, and make a lasting impact with Cell Phones for Soldiers.

Caitlin’s Smiles Initiative:

Helping Kids Be Kids — For Over 7 Years!

Since 2020, AAA Cares has proudly partnered with Caitlin’s Smiles, delivering over 20,000 Coping Kits to children in medical facilities across our communities. Caitlin’s Smiles is driven by a heartfelt mission: to bring joy, creativity and comfort to children facing medical challenges. Through art and craft kits, they offer young patients a chance to express themselves, build confidence and — most importantly — smile.

This February , AAA Cares invites you to be part of the magic. Each AAA Central Penn branch will be stocked with materials so you can stop in and help assemble Coping Kits . These kits are specially designed for children in emergency rooms or outpatient surgery settings and include things like a cheerful greeting card, small toys and craft materials. Every item in a Coping Kit helps reduce anxiety, spark creativity and remind children that they are not alone.

Join us in spreading smiles — one kit at a time.

Confusion Over “Slow Down, Move Over”

Laws Puts Roadside Responders at Risk

New AAA Foundation study finds most drivers are unaware of or misunderstand the laws, leading to dangerous gaps in compliance.

In 2024, 46 emergency responders never made it home, according to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. They were police officers, firefighters, EMTs and tow truck operators — struck while assisting others on the roadside. “Slow Down, Move Over” (SDMO) laws were created to prevent these tragedies, but a new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAAFTS) finds that confusion about the laws and inconsistent enforcement are leaving responders at continued risk.

“For more than 20 years, AAA has championed ‘Slow Down, Move Over’ laws in every state, yet we are still losing far too many roadside heroes in the line of duty,” said Gene Boehm, President and CEO of AAA National. “It’s clear that awareness alone isn’t enough. Drivers need to understand what these laws require and why they matter.”

While every state and the District of Columbia has a “Slow Down, Move Over” law, many drivers don’t fully understand what those laws require. In a forthcoming AAAFTS national survey, twothirds of drivers said they’ve heard of SDMO laws, but many couldn’t say whether their state has one or what the law entails. Drivers are far less likely to move over or slow down for tow trucks or stranded vehicles than for police, revealing a widespread misconception about who the laws protect.

When researchers reviewed real-world footage of drivers passing roadside incidents, they found only 64% of vehicles either slowed down or moved over. The remaining 36% did neither . Changing lanes was far more common than reducing speed, suggesting that many drivers are missing half the law’s intent.

The research reveals several troubling trends. Tow truck operators face the greatest risk. Only 58% of drivers witnessed in surveillance footage slowed down or moved over when a tow truck was stopped at the roadside, compared to 66% who slowed down or moved over for police vehicles.

Intentions don’t match actions. Most drivers say they comply with SDMO laws, but roadside video shows otherwise — especially when it comes to reducing speed.

AAA is encouraging policymakers, enforcement agencies and safety partners to strengthen and align their approaches to “Slow Down, Move Over” laws — making them clearer, more consistent and easier for drivers to follow. Recommendations include:

• Clarify and align SDMO laws across states, including a consistent definition of what it means to “slow down.”

• Raise public awareness through emotionally compelling, visually clear campaigns that humanize the impact of noncompliance and showcase all vehicles covered by the laws.

• Increase enforcement visibility with coordinated, high-visibility efforts and education-first use of emerging technologies like dashcams and automated enforcement systems.

AAA furthers its mission to protect service technicians and tow providers by offering innovative solutions that improve safety at the roadside by partnering with companies, like HAAS Alert, to provide advance notice to drivers about an incident at the roadside and remind them to slow down and move over.

Five European Cities To Visit in 2026

Would you like to pack as much culture, history, dining and entertainment into your travel plans as possible? Focus on cities. Looking for an experience that’s as simple and stress free as possible? Choose European cities and work with AAA Travel to get there. You’ve got dozens of options to choose from when it comes to destinations, of course, but for now let’s focus on five that we’re confident will delight a wide range of travelers.

For travel to the “Fair City” of Dublin, or other destinations in Ireland or Scotland, we partner with Brendan Vacations and their passionate team of professionals who are experts in the Celtic homelands. For more information, scan the QR code.

Dublin “The Fair City”

Let’s begin in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. New to international travel? Concerned about language barriers? Dublin is a city that can readily make American travelers feel at home. For starters, English is the primary language. The city is highly walkable and easy to navigate. And, visitors are warmly received.

For an extra heavy dose of Irish warmth and hospitality, stop into one of Dublin’s many pubs, the city’s most popular gathering spots. Even if you don’t drink, you’ll enjoy the cozy atmosphere and the easy conversation. You’re also likely to find live music.

Visiting Dublin is a shortcut to a wide survey of Northern European history. Within just a few blocks, you can explore evidence of life during the Viking, medieval and Georgian periods. The highlights include Dublin Castle, Christ Church Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Kilmainham Gaol, a historic prison built in 1796 that is now a museum and monument to Irish nationalism.

And about those Vikings ... Dublin has the largest Viking cemetery found anywhere outside of Scandinavia. It includes more than 40 graves dating back to the 9th century.

Lisbon

“The City of Seven Hills”

Paris

AAA Member Choice Vacations® can readily meet your desire to experience the many pleasures of European cities — and many other fascinating and appealing destinations as well. In fact, AAA Member Choice Vacations® provides guided vacations around the world for today’s traveler. For more information, scan the QR code.

From the most northern city on our list, we move to the most southern, Lisbon, Portugal. It’s also the westernmost capital city in mainland Europe. Founded by the Phoenicians as a trading post in about 1200 BCE, Lisbon is older than Rome. In fact, it is the second-oldest capital city in Europe, following on the heels of Athens. Like Rome, Lisbon is situated on seven hills. The world’s oldest bookstore is in Lisbon — Livraria Bertrand, founded in 1732. You’ll find it on the main street of the Chiado district.

“The City of Light”

From the coasts of Ireland and Portugal, let’s move inland to Paris, France.

Like Dublin, Paris is an extremely walkable city. In the City of Light, one outing on foot can easily include multiple landmarks like Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, the world’s largest art museum. Walking along the River Seine will guide you to many more notable sites. Easily venture further via the famous Paris Metro, which has been in operation since 1900.

Be sure to spend some time in Montmartre. This historic neighborhood, famous for its artistic past, once attracted Van Gogh, Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec, among others. Modern-day artists are still drawn to the picturesque streets and flourishing nightlife. One of the highest points in Paris, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, is located at the summit of Montmartre hill. Be sure to take in the view. The Montmartre Cemetery is the final resting place of dozens of the famous and infamous, including composer Hector Berlioz, artist Edgar Degas and novelist and playwright Alexandre Dumas.

Venture a little beyond the city limits to see the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The tower is a 16th-century fortification that served as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. The monastery was commissioned by King Manuel I and built over a period of about 100 years, beginning in 1501. Another notable landmark is the Capela de São João Baptista in the Igreja de São Roque. One of the most expensive chapels in the world, it is famously decorated with gold and precious stones.

Thanks to the city’s thoughtful response to the earthquake of 1755, and its unique approach to building, Lisbon is considered the world’s first earthquake-resistant city.

A curious fact about Paris: The world-famous Eiffel Tower was never intended to be a permanent fixture. It was built for the 1889 World’s Fair and intended to be taken down after 20 years, but it proved to be useful as a radio tower and so was saved.

Budapest “The Paris of the East”

Eastern Europe is home to another “Paris”: Budapest, Hungary. While Paris, France, has the River Seine, Budapest has the Danube, a central feature of the city. In fact, the Danube splits the city into its two historical parts: Buda and Pest. (The two weren’t joined into one city until 1873!)

Too often, Budapest does not get enough recognition for its stunning architecture. Two fine examples are Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament Building. The castle is the historical palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. Portions date to 1265, but the Baroque structure that dominates the site today was built between 1749 and 1769. The Parliament Building opened in 1904 and has reigned as the largest building in Hungary ever since. Its design was heavily influenced by the city hall in Vienna.

Budapest’s subway is even older than Paris’s and is UNESCO recognized. Having opened in 1896, it’s the second oldest electrified underground railway in the world, after London’s.

While considering a trip to Dubrovnik, consider cruising the Croatian coast aboard Princess Cruises. Princess Cruises typically offers excursions to Italy and Greece as well. After all, you might decide to add other Mediterranean destinations to the trip. For more information, scan the QR code.

Budapest is more famous for its geothermal springs. The city boasts a network of more than 200 caverns and tunnels formed by the springs. Its thermal baths have led to Budapest often being called the “City of Spas.”

Dubrovnik

“The Pearl of the Adriatic”

Dubrovnik, Croatia, could be the one city on our list that you’ve never heard of. But, despite its not getting as much press as the others, it certainly deserves your attention. Dubrovnik is a Mediterranean city located across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. Founded in the 7th century by Roman refugees, the city has served as a filming location for “Game of Thrones.” The Old Town section is yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by medieval walls, it is a car-free zone.

Care for a swim? Dubrovnik offers both pebble beaches and sandy beaches. Popular options include Banje Beach, Copacabana Beach and Buža Beach, which is not so much a “beach” as a cliffside swimming spot situated just below the city’s walls.

Dubrovnik is a world leader in more than one category: The city walls are renowned for having never been breached. In 1432, the city established one of the world’s first orphanages. A pioneer in public health, Dubrovnik, in 1377, created one of the world’s first quarantine facilities. And, in 1776, the Republic of Dubrovnik was the first country to recognize the United States.

For many, a voyage to Antarctica is more than a destination — it’s a revelation. To stand at the bottom of the world, surrounded by stillness, ice and the vast southern sky, is to rediscover a sense of wonder.

Adventure for All

The beauty of adventure travel lies in its inclusivity. It isn’t reserved for the young or the daring — it’s for anyone who believes there’s still more to see, taste and feel.

Adventure doesn’t have to mean scaling peaks or crossing deserts. It can be a gentle hike, a cultural exchange or a scenic cruise that stirs the soul as much as the senses.

Because every adventure, no matter how grand or small, expands our view of the world — and of ourselves. It reminds us that life, like travel, is best lived with curiosity and courage.

More Than 150 Years On,

America’s First Zoo Is Still Leading the Way

Planning to visit Philadelphia for our nation’s 250th birthday next year? Be sure to make time for the Philadelphia Zoo. The Zoological Society of Philadelphia was chartered in 1859, making it the birthplace of organized zoology in the United States. Though the Civil War delayed its opening until 1874, the wait was worth it. America’s first zoo has been enchanting visitors and thoughtfully caring for animals ever since. But this historic distinction is just the beginning. The Philadelphia Zoo has been advancing animal care and conservation for more than 150 years.

Over the decades, the zoo has pioneered innovations in animal care, breeding programs and visitor experiences. It was the first U.S. zoo to successfully breed orangutans and chimps, and it opened the world’s first children’s zoo, and developed groundbreaking approaches to animal nutrition and healthcare.

From its founding, the Philadelphia Zoo’s mission extended beyond exhibition to advance scientific research and understanding of animal behavior. This led to the creation of the first research center within a U.S. zoo. Today, the Philadelphia Zoo is world renowned for its state-ofthe-art animal healthcare facilities and award-winning education and conservation programs. Among its more recent innovations is a first-inthe-world animal travel and exploration trail system. Known as Zoo360, the system consists of a network of see-through mesh trails that provide primates and big cats with the opportunity to roam widely around and above the zoo grounds.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, and More!

When the Philadelphia Zoo opened in 1874, it was home to about 300 mammals, 674 birds and eight reptiles, including antelopes, kangaroos, lions, monkeys, zebras, an elephant, a rhinoceros and a tiger. Today, its 42 acres are home to more than 1,900 animals representing over 340 species, from Galapagos tortoises and red pandas to western lowland gorillas and Caribbean flamingos.

Beyond the animals, visitors can explore the zoo’s beautiful Victorian garden setting, complete with historic buildings, tree-lined walks and

animal sculptures. The grounds showcase more than 500 species of plants.

Leading and supporting conservation projects is an ongoing part of the Philadelphia Zoo’s mission. In fact, the zoo has played an important role in conservation efforts across numerous species and around the world. The zoo breeds Rodrigues fruit bats as part of a Species Survival Plan that has helped their wild population recover from fewer than 100 in the 1970s to about 20,000 today. The zoo also supports efforts to vaccinate wild golden lion tamarins in Brazil against yellow fever, one of the few examples of vaccinating wild animals to save an endangered species.

In 2026, you can still trust the Philadelphia Zoo to be always expanding and improving on what a zoo can do — both for animals and for all those people of all ages who enjoy and care for them.

Make it a point to visit and see it all for yourself!

Happy New Year!

Time To Review Your Insurance Policies

It’s a good idea to thoroughly review your insurance policies as the new year begins. You may want to consider various factors, from the age of your vehicles to any upgrades you plan to make to your home. In doing this, you can determine what changes you might need to make to your insurance coverage for next year.

This checklist outlines some of the areas you might want to consider.

Home Upgrade. Remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, adding an extra room or upgrading other features in your home may add substantial value to your house. Before the work begins, check to see if you need to increase your insurance coverage. By doing so, the addition or upgrade will be covered in case it’s damaged or destroyed during construction. Also, be sure to notify your agent if you’ve installed a new roof or upgraded your electrical or plumbing system. You may get a reduction in your homeowner’s premium because these improvements can reduce the risk of damage to your home.

Home Inventory. If you don’t have one already, it’s time to create a home inventory. A home inventory is a list of all of the things that you own, with a description of each item, where you bought it, how much it cost, and the make, model and serial number for major items. If you have receipts, attach those, and keep a copy of the inventory in a safe place, like the safe deposit box at your bank. That way, you can access the inventory if the copy at your home is somehow lost or badly damaged.

Home Value. It may be time to re-estimate what it would cost to rebuild your home. The estimate should cover construction costs but not include the price of the land. To determine the ballpark amount, first, contact a local building association or real estate agent and ask them for the current construction cost per square foot for homes in your community. Take that number and multiply it times the number of square feet in your home. That figure will give you an idea of whether you have sufficient coverage to rebuild your home at the current construction cost if it is destroyed.

Liability.

Check the liability coverage on your homeowners or renters policy to ensure it is adequate, especially if you’ve added such things as a swimming pool or a hot tub or now have a trampoline in your yard or basement. This may also be the time to consider taking out a personal umbrella policy for additional liability coverage.

New Valuables.

If you’ve acquired new valuables, such as jewelry or expensive pieces of art, check your policy. There could be a limit on the amount that will be covered for these types of items, and you may need to add an endorsement to cover the value of any additional acquisitions.

Coverage by Multiple Companies. Suppose you purchase auto insurance from one company and life insurance, homeowners, or renters insurance from another. In that case, you may want to consolidate and buy multiple policies from the same company to take advantage of a multi-policy discount.

Auto Coverage. Re-evaluate your auto insurance coverage if you have an aging auto. Check your car’s Kelley Blue Book value to determine what your car is worth, and decide whether the premium you’re paying for collision coverage makes sense based on what you would receive if your car were totaled. Also, figure out if you plan on driving your car more or less during the coming year. If you have changed jobs, retired or intend to go on more long-distance road trips, you may need to change your policy to reflect the miles you intend to drive.

Students in College. If your child is going to college in a car covered by your auto insurance policy, be sure to inform your agent as soon as possible. The premium cost may change.

New Drivers. You may qualify for a discount if your child has less than nine years of driving experience, is a full- or part-time student and has a certain grade point average.

How Long To Warm Up Your Engine Before Driving

On brisk winter mornings, many drivers fire up their cars and patiently wait for the engine to warm up before hitting the road. But how long is long enough? And is this warming-up ritual necessary?

How Long Should You

Warm Up Your Car?

The Ideal Warm-Up Time

Start your engine and let it idle for just a moment, about the time it takes to buckle your seatbelt and adjust your mirrors. This brief period is enough to circulate lubricating oil to all the engine’s critical components. In colder weather, feel free to let your car idle a bit longer while you scrape frost or ice from the windows and windshield.

Modern cars A few seconds

Benefits of Minimal Warm-Up

Electric and hybrid cars No warm-up required

While the answer to “Do you need to warm up your car?” is yes, minimizing your car’s warm-up time has various benefits. Here’s a breakdown:

• Fuel efficiency : Extended idling burns more fuel than necessary. Limiting your warm-up time can improve your car’s gas mileage and save money at the pump.

• Reduced emissions : Idling engines release harmful pollutants into the air. Shorter warm-up times contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment.

Special Considerations

While modern vehicles can handle minimal warm-up times, there are certain circumstances where a slightly longer idle period may be best.

• Older vehicles : Older cars, especially those without fuel injection, may benefit from a longer warm-up period to ensure proper lubrication and prevent excessive wear. Aim for 2-3 minutes of idling before driving.

In extreme cold, idle for 1-2 extra minutes for smoother performance.

• Longer engine life : Modern engines are designed to reach optimal operating temperatures quickly. Prolonged idling can stress engine components and lead to premature wear.

Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel and creates more emissions than restarting your engine.

• Extreme cold weather : In very cold temperatures or when you’re stuck in the snow, your engine may need additional time to warm up and reach optimal operating temperature. Allow a few extra minutes of idling when warming up your car in winter to help prevent excessive stress on the engine.

• Heavy towing : If you’re towing a heavy load, your engine will work harder to maintain its temperature. A slightly longer warm-up period can help prevent overheating.

If your car won’t start, avoid repeatedly cranking the engine. Instead, let it sit for a few minutes to allow the battery to recover and the engine to warm up slightly. This can help improve starting performance, especially in cold weather.

How Long To Warm Up Your Engine Before Driving

Do You Need To Warm Up Electric or Hybrid Cars?

Unlike traditional gas-powered cars, electric vehicles and hybrid cars don’t need to warm up. Their advanced battery technology and efficient electric motors can operate optimally even in cold weather. In fact, idling an electric or hybrid car can waste energy. Instead of idling, keep your car plugged in and use the climate control system to warm or cool the cabin. This helps conserve energy and ensures thevehicle starts smoothly, even in cold conditions.

Tips for Efficient Winter Driving

Winter driving can be challenging, but the following tips can improve your car’s efficiency and performance:

• Using a block heater : If you live somewhere with extremely cold temperatures, a block heater, an electric heating element that warms the engine block, can help your engine warm up faster, reducing wear and tear. Block heaters typically cost between $50 and $200 for the part, plus installation.

• Warming up the interior : Use your car’s climate control system to preheat the interior a few minutes before you start your car. This way, you can get into a warm car without wasting fuel.

Get Your Car Ready for Winter With AAA

• Gentle acceleration : Aggressive acceleration can increase fuel consumption, especially in cold weather. Accelerate smoothly and gradually to conserve energy.

• Maintain tire pressure : Cold weather can cause tire pressure to drop. Maintain proper tire pressure to improve fuel efficiency.

Winter can be tough on your car, but a AAA membership can help you get through it with peace of mind. Not only will AAA dispatch a tow truck to get you back on the road if your battery dies in the cold, but they also help keep your car running smoothly all winter long with benefits like discounts on battery replacement and antifreeze top-offs.

Are you ready to improve your credit? Start with these steps

Are you ready to improve your credit?

Start with these steps

Getting a higher credit score doesn’t have to be complicated or confusing. Once you understand how your credit score is calculated and, more importantly, how your daily decisions make it go up or down, you’ll be on your way to increasing your credit knowledge, confidence and, ultimately, your credit score.

But there’s no quick fix. Building and maintaining your credit score won’t happen overnight, but it will happen if you practice patience, take time to expand your credit knowledge and stick to your plan for success. To increase your creditworthiness — a lender’s willingness to trust whether you will pay your debts, such as a credit card, auto loan or mortgage — here are five steps you can take.

Learn what influences your credit score.

Five major factors play a role in determining your credit score : Credit Mix (the types of credit you have, such as credit cards, student loans and car loans), Amounts Owed (how much of your available credit you are repaying), Credit Length (the age of your credit accounts), Payment History (your track record of making payments on time), and New Credit (how much new credit you are applying for).

Even if it’s just a few days past the due date, late payments will hurt your credit score. To help avoid this situation, set up automatic payments with your bank or credit union and credit card company, so your payments are always on time.

Using too much of your available credit can lower your credit score. A good rule of thumb: Keep your total credit utilization less than 30%. For example, say you have a retail credit card with a limit of $1,000 and two bank credit cards with limits of $500 each. That means you should aim to keep your total utilization below $600 across all three accounts. Pay your bills on time. 02 Lower your credit utilization rate.

Check your credit reports at least every year.

Credit experts recommend reviewing your Experian®, Equifax® and TransUnion® credit reports every 12 months to check for errors. While negative credit information, such as repossessions and bankruptcies, stay on your credit report for seven or more years, you may spot and dispute errors or signs of identity theft or credit card fraud, both of which can negatively impact your credit score.

If you pay off an account or have an old account that you no longer use, think twice about closing it. Depending on how much available credit you have, this action can increase your credit utilization, lowering your credit score.

Changing your credit score is a journey. By following these steps, you can get to your destination of improvement.
