1. Clean Out that Mouth! If you’re a homeowner, you’re probably thinking about cleaning out your gutters this time of year. Pull out your calendar early, because the schedule at your dental office can start to get busy this time of year. 2. Replace Your Toothbrush: Homeowners and renters are familiar with the time-honored drill of replacing heating and air conditioning filters with the change of seasons. It’s also a great time to switch out your toothbrush! So, when you change the filter, change your toothbrush as well! Here are a few tips on choosing the right toothbrush to make sure you pick the right one. 3. Pick up a Pack of Xylitol Gum: This is one little secret that’s starting to catch on. Use a sugar-free gum that contains Xylitol – a natural sweetener derived from plants. Xylitol doesn’t break down like sugar, and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Both of which will help you avoid cavities. 4. Eliminate a Habit: Whether it’s smoking, acidic beverages, or chewing habits that can wreck your teeth, try eliminating a habit that does harm to your teeth. Doing so now is a good idea because we’re still outside the hectic holiday window. There are fewer demands on your willpower reserves, making a successful effort that much more likely. 5. Pick up a Habit: There are a lot of good dental habits that’ll help you do good by your teeth year-round. This fall, try a few you’re not familiar with and give your mouth a boost. A few new ones might be: dry brushing, going with the right food choices, or wearing a mouthguard if you play sports. Try a few on for size to see what works for you. 6. Buy yourself an Early Holiday Gift: Who says you have to wait until the holidays to spoil yourself? Why not start now by picking up a dental care tool to make your teeth look great, your gums feel great, and your breath smell great! There are a lot of easy to use, budget-friendly options, including teeth whitening, interproximal brushes, dental irrigators, and even tongue scrapers! 7. Check-in on Your Insurance Benefits! As the end of your insurance year approaches, you’re going to want to take advantage of any unused dental benefits that may still be available. In most cases any unused portion is lost when your new insurance year starts. Many people can use HSA and Flex spending accounts for dental work and some of those expire at the end of the year. So, be on top of this... after all, they’re benefits you have already paid for! And don’t forget: many of those dollars can be used for items other than actual exams!

I wish he would have shared the reference for this research poll he mentioned and forgive me for not getting the source for this conference, but I found it very interesting that SLEEP was the #1 driver for happiness. I know my day goes much better when I’ve had a refreshing night’s sleep. I had a patient this week come in and tell me that she had the best night’s sleep that she’s had in a long time since starting care here. The funny thing is that she came in because of headaches related to her tight neck. The body is an amazing thing when you remove the interference to the nervous system and allow it to heal and function as it was designed. This makes me happy. I watch the statistics on the housing trends reports and then read the various commentary and projections from national experts, I’m reminded of the lyrics to Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’. That song was originally released in 1964, yet the lyrics seem as relevant today as they were then, on a variety of fronts, including the current housing market. What is, wasn’t, and what will be is not... Because the trend of working from home doesn’t seem to be lessening all that much for many industries, the necessity of close proximity to the office has continued to wane. This has allowed home buyers to expand their search, venturing further out to the suburbs and beyond, including different states. Colorado continues to rank in the top ten percent of the most expensive of the 50 largest metro areas, yet active listings for the metro Denver area are down nearly 40% over last year, and average days on the market has also decreased. The national median price is up more than 10% year over year but growing at a slowing pace because an increasing percentage of smaller starter homes is becoming available as buyers upgrade to homes with more than two thousand square feet in order to allow for separate office and more living space to fit changing lifestyles as a result of Covid. In a nutshell, numbers can be very deceiving and context, like location, is most definitely important. Likewise, timing and expertise can make a bigger difference than you might think! What does retirement security mean to you? Offered by: Tim Roberts - Edward Jones
October is National Retirement Security Month. But what does retirement security mean to you? And how can you work toward achieving it? Here are some suggestions: · Build your resources. While you’re working, save in tax-advantaged accounts such as your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. In your 401(k), contribute at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. Remember, especially early in your career, time is often your biggest asset. Be sure to save early, since the longer you wait, the more you’ll need to save to help reach your goals. · Look for ways to boost retirement income. When transitioning to retirement, you can take steps to align your income with your needs. For example, consider Social Security. You can start collecting it as early as 62, but your monthly payments will be much larger if you can wait until your “full” retirement age, typically between 66 and 67. (Payments will “max out” at age 70.) So, if you have sufficient income from a pension or your 401(k) and other retirement accounts, and you and your spouse are in good health with a family history of longevity, you may consider delaying taking Social Security. You also might want to explore other income-producing vehicles, such as certain annuities that are designed to provide a lifetime income stream. · Prepare for unexpected costs. During your retirement, you can anticipate some costs, such as housing and transportation, but other expenses are more irregular and can’t always be predicted, such as those connected with health care. Even with Medicare, you could easily spend a few thousand dollars a year on medical expenses, so you may want to budget for these costs as part of your emergency savings, and possibly purchase supplemental insurance. “My math grade dropped to a ‘C’, but the teacher just didn’t explain anything” exclaims one kidto another. “That’s right,” continues the friend sitting nearby, “that teacher doesn’t do a good job.” As I listened to the exchange, I thought about how many times I have heard similar stories of woe at every level: “I was late, but it was because of traffic.” “I missed the deadline, but it was because my coworker didn’t do his part.” “Times are tough, but it is the fault of the previous president, governor, mayor, boss, CEO, co-worker, etc.” I guess that as a matter of self preservation, we try to avoid being blamed when something doesn’t go well. But by doing this, we admit that we were never able to do any better. Something or someone out there was, and is, truly in charge of my success (or failure), and if I fail, it’s their fault! On the other hand, in his book, “Extreme Ownership” (one of my recent favorites), former Navy Seal commander Jocko Willink states that you must “own everything in your world”. You must be truly and ultimately responsible for every success and failure. There is no one else to blame. One must take ownership of everything that impacts the mission and develop a plan to win. That is extreme ownership. (Now stop and read that again.) Imagine if your employee, your child, your co-worker, and yes, even our politicians took extreme ownership of everything within their reach. What if you did too? Try practicing extreme ownership in everything you do. For example even our youngest beginner Karate students, know that there are 3 general rules at the Dojo:
We believe that instilling a no excuses mentality (extreme ownership) in our students, makes them more solution focused, and less likely to become a victim of the circumstances. So the next time you are tempted to shift blame and say “it was not my fault,” “not my job,” or try to make an excuse for anything large or small. Stop yourself, and take ownership of it all. You will be surprised how empowering it feels to finally take charge of your future and your success.

Why Didn’t My Will Work? Offered by: Dolan & Associates, P.C
Have you ever heard of a situation where someone left a Will dividing their estate equally among their children but one of the children ended up with most of the assets? How did it happen? Your Will said to divide the assets equally. Unfortunately, your Will only governs the assets that it captures. Assets that are in joint ownership, or have a payable on death or beneficiary designation payable to someone other than the deceased’s estate, bypass the instructions in your Will. Many people assume they know who the beneficiaries are on their insurance and accounts. Quite often they are mistaken, and the family is shocked after death to learn that one child is named as the beneficiary. That child, even if they are the executor named under your Will, is entitled to keep the assets. And they usually do! Even if you trusted them to divide them among the rest of your children. The problem also arises if you have minor children. Young parents often put a Will in place which creates a trust to take care of their minor children until they become adults. They then name their children as the beneficiaries of their accounts and life insurance should they both die. Upon death, the Court must appoint a Conservator for the children because the assets bypassed the trust created under their Will and went directly to the children who are too young to legally own the assets. Ask yourself, “Are my assets titled correctly so my estate planning instructions will control where the assets end up?” This is one of many important considerations when planning your estate. ith heading back to school and fall activities fast approaching your family is spending more time in the community. With community-spread transmission of COVID 19 high, the Centers for Disease Control recommends wearing a mask at indoor public settings to help slow the spread of COVID 19. Some families are finding it difficult keeping masks on their children. The exceptions to wearing masks are kids under 2, anyone unable to remove their mask independently, anyone having trouble breathing, and people with cognitive disabilities. (CDC.gov). Wearing a mask for children can be a challenge for families and the kids themselves. Here are some easy steps on how to approach kids about wearing a face mask. First, be a role model and wear your mask in public, showing your children that wearing a mask in public is a good thing to do. Allow time for your child to get used to wearing his/her own mask by setting time aside at home and have your child practice wearing his/her mask at home for short periods of time. As your child becomes more comfortable wearing his/her own mask, gradually increase time periods of wearing their mask at home. Have your child help pick out their own mask and decorate their face mask to make it fun for them. For school age children talk to them about the reasons why it is important to wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID 19 in the community and for their family to stay healthy (childrenscolorado. org). Marijuana sales tax question to be on the ballot for the November 2 Election Offered by: City of Brighton Communications
When Brighton voters head to the polls for the November 2, 2021 Election, among the questions they’ll see on the ballot are whether or not to allow a marijauna sales tax in the city. On August 31, Brighton City Council approved the resolution to place the question on the ballot with a 9-0 vote. The resolution for marijuana sales would allow for the sale of retail marijuana and marijuana products within city limits. The change to city code would only be allowed if voters approve a 4-percent sales tax on marijuana and marijuana products sold at retail stores in Brighton. City staff have estimated that approximately $1.5 million of marijuana sales tax could be collected per year. Revenue from this special sales tax would be used to fund capital projects, including recreational amenities (with no more than 20-percent of the revenues to be spent on administrative costs). Under TABOR, in order for the City to impose the marijuana sales tax, voter approval is required from its citizens. Maybe there’s something that was left unsaid and you just need a chance to actually say that to them. You might just need to know that they are OK, and you might want to let them know that you are OK. Traditionally, in May and mid-October through mid-November, the veil between the realms of the living and the dead, thins for a while. This liminal space, this threshold, is more easily crossed. 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

arlier this week I spoke to a colleague who recently retired after a long, multi-decade career in the hearing aid industry. She shared with me how the last two years were the most successful of her career. When I asked why, she said that the combination of people wanting to connect with family during the pandemic, and the difficulty of hearing people wearing masks brought more people into her office than ever before. I related to her that I had seen something similar in the urgency people showed as they sought help for the hearing problems they were experiencing during the pandemic. Another trend I have seen is the number of people who are deciding to get help sooner than ever before. Generally, people wait somewhere between 7 and 10 years to do something about hearing loss. However, the number of people I have seen getting help as soon as they detect a problem has significantly increased. There are multiple reasons for this. It seems that the increase is due to more widespread knowledge relative to research linking dementia and hearing loss, improved technology that makes hearing aids sound more natural, improved ability to treat tinnitus, and technological advancements that pair hearing aids to smartphones. Some technological advancements are becoming more common such as Bluetooth compatibility and rechargeable batteries. However, these have been available for a number of years and each manufacturer has different capabilities and levels of success. When it comes to Bluetooth,
not all phones and hearing aids offer complete compatibility. Some manufacturers only offer Bluetooth connectivity in behind-the-ear options. Others have it available in every style from completely-incanal models all the way up to Power behind-the-ear styles. These technologies are helping everyone from those with profound hearing loss who have almost no other option to speak on the phone, to those with mild-or-moderate loss who are working full time. These individuals tend to find improved performance at work due to the combination of improved hearing and communication, and increased efficiency offered when their devices connect directly to their phone. As hearing aid manufacturers compete to create the best products, the most advanced improvement I have seen in the industry is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help individuals hear in all listening environments. These devices actually allow users to simply push a button on the device or smartphone and activate an immediate reprogramming of the hearing aid to optimize the performance for that particular situation. here are pros and cons to doing anything yourself. You weigh factors such as your expertise, the enjoyment of doing a certain task, and the cost savings of doing it yourself (DIY) vs. hiring a professional. But when it comes to selling a home as a nonprofessional, you’ll have out-of-pocket expenses for advertising, many more demands on your time, and more liabilities. But most of all, you’re facing the likelihood of losing money. According to some quick statistics from the 2020 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, published by the National Association of REALTORS,(NAR) the share of for-sale-by-owner sellers or FSBOs who sold their home without the assistance of a real estate agent was only 8%. Forty-six percent of FSBO sellers did no active marketing, and 22% of ones who did marketed to friends, family, and neighbors. Twenty-five percent stuck a sign in the yard. And 14% relied on social media sites including Twitter and Facebook. And the rest was a hodge-podge of open houses, print ads, classifieds, and more. Real estate professionals, on the other hand, have incredible resources to find buyers, including multiple listing services, local to international associates and affiliates, and professional marketing support through their brokers. In addition, they use yard signs, social media, word-of-mouth, and so on. It should come as little surprise then that the typical FSBO home sold for $217,900 compared to $295,000 for agent-assisted home sales in 2018, according to NAR. Why so low? Eighty-seven percent of homebuyers used a real estate professional, six percent bought directly from a homebuilder, and the remaining 7% purchased a FSBO property directly from the owner. If you’re still undecided, it may be because you don’t want to pay a sales commission. The American Genius says that 41% of FSBO sellers don’t want to pay a commission or fee, while 30% of FSBO sellers plan to sell to a relative, friend, or neighbor. Real estate fees can typically range from five to seven percent of the transaction. But, by not testing their homes in the open market they’re losing more money than the fees. Significantly, more buyers are using sales professionals to help them find and buy their homes. In 2001, 69 percent of buyers used the services of a real estate professional. By 2011, that number had risen to nine out of 10 and remains true today. So if you’re planning to sell your home yourself, you may be dealing with a professional agent instead of the buyer across the table. That’s when FSBO sellers miss out on the advantages of having their own listing agent. When you sell it yourself, you have to do everything the real estate agent would do – show the home, negotiate, advertise, and keep the transaction moving forward when hitches arise.
