Our October issue is always a fun one to put together. You can feel the excitement of Fall’s wonder and the energy created in the communities to celebrate this time of year. What’s in store for us in this Northeastern Metro Area in October?
We’ll enjoy beautiful colors of changing leaves, “all things pumpkin” will soothe our souls, tantalize our taste buds, and bring wonderful color to our interior and exterior decor. There are many exciting events coming in October and their ads are spread throughout our entire magazine. Save the dates on your calendar so you can stay close to home and have fun with friends and family throughout the entire month.
We’re truly fortunate to live where there are so many excellent markets where we can buy delicious fruits and vegetables to enjoy and for those who like to can, prepare for Winter/Spring eating as well. Harvesting to many has to do with produce, but, for others the term could be related to our lives in general. I’m thinking we’ll all want to gather all the great moments we can this coming month and consider them our Special Fall Harvest.
All e Best, is October!

7 Great Tips To Keep Your Teeth Healthy This Fall!
Offered by: Mountain View Family Dental
Fall
is upon us! To accompany the changing of the seasons, here’s a checklist of seven new dental health ideas to carry you through this lovely autumn weather.
1. Clean Out that Mouth! If you’re a homeowner, you’re probably thinking about cleaning out your gutters this time of year. After all, twelve months of debris raining on the eaves of your roof means you’ve probably got a lot of junk to clear. The same goes for your teeth – particularly if it’s been twelve months! Pull out your calendar early, because the schedule at your dental office can start to get busy this time of year.
2. Replace Your Toothbrush: Homeowners and renters are familiar with the time-honored drill of replacing heating and air conditioning filters with the change of seasons. It’s also a great time to switch out your toothbrush! So, when you change the filter, change your toothbrush as well! Here are a few tips on choosing the right toothbrush to make sure you pick the right one.
3. Pick up a Pack of Xylitol Gum: This is one little secret that’s starting to catch on. Use a sugar-free gum that contains Xylitol – a natural sweetener derived from plants. Xylitol doesn’t break down like sugar, and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Both of which will help you avoid cavities.
4. Eliminate a Habit: Whether it’s smoking, acidic beverages, or chewing habits that can wreck your teeth, try eliminating a habit that does harm to your teeth. Doing so now is a good idea because we’re still outside the hectic holiday window. There are fewer demands on your willpower reserves, making a successful effort that much more likely.
5. Pick up a Habit: There are a lot of good dental habits that’ll help you do good by your teeth year-round. This fall, try a few you’re not familiar with and give your mouth a boost. A few new ones might be: dry brushing, going with the right food choices, or wearing a mouthguard if you play sports. Try a few on for size to see what works for you.
6. Buy yourself an Early Holiday Gift: Who says you have to wait until the holidays to spoil yourself? Why not start now by picking up a dental care tool to make your teeth look great, your gums feel great, and your breath smell great! There are a lot of easy to use, budget-friendly options, including teeth whitening, interproximal brushes, dental irrigators, and even tongue scrapers!
7. Check-in on Your Insurance Benefits! As the end of your insurance year approaches, you’re going to want to take advantage of any unused dental benefits that may still be available. In most cases any unused portion is lost when your new insurance year starts. Many people can use HSA and Flex spending accounts for dental work and some of those expire at the end of the year. So, be on top of this... after all, they’re benefits you have already paid for! And don’t forget: many of those dollars can be used for items other than actual exams!

What’s Up with all the Breath Talk?
O ered by: Dr. Eric Anderson DC and Heidi Anderson Brighton Clinic of Chiropractic
Haveyou noticed that breathing, specifically proper breathing, seems to come up everywhere these days? I personally have a couple health issues that I am working with that would appear to not have any correlation to breathing. Yet, when I research these topics, proper breathing is one of the recommended exercises to help improve them.
So what is proper breathing? Doesn’t the body just breathe naturally by itself? Hard to imagine that I can change a function that happens on its own. But guess what? We can, but we have been conditioned to breathe incorrectly.
ink of a time you watched a baby. How do they breathe? ey are belly breathers. is means you can see their belly moving in and out as they breathe. Now you try it. Take a couple big breaths in and out and pay attention to the parts of your body that are moving. If you are like most Americans, our shoulders and upper chest go up when we take a big breath. is is called chest breathing. is should only happen during strenuous exercise, not relaxing, everyday breathing.
We should be belly breathing like that baby! If we started out as belly breathers, why do we not do so now? Our culture’s expectations of small waists and flat stomachs has taught us to not EVER push our stomachs out. We have been conditioned to keep the stomach in and tight at all costs. e costs are affecting our health and oxygen utilization which we thrive on as human beings!
I’ve learned you can reprogram your brain and body by changing your awareness to breathe properly. Place your hand on your belly and when you breathe in start feeling your hand move out, and then in as you exhale. Be sure to keep your shoulders and chest still as you feel the motion coming from your belly. After you’ve done this for a while, your body will be retrained to switch to this type of breathing.
What are the benefits? ere are so many! is can help with things like headaches, fatigue, concentration, and even fat burning. Belly breathing is a great calming tool for both adults and children and I’ve learned it helps with overall healing in the body. I know some call it diaphragmatic breathing, but belly breathing just sounds more fun. So give it a try this month and have more fun with better breathing through your belly! Good luck, and enjoy your Autumn Breaths!

My name is Nikki Rolando and I’m the owner of Goat Bubbles Bath & Body LLC (AKA MNR Goat Bubbles).
I’ve been a knitter/crocheter for 15+ years and in 2019 was invited to a fibereista group held at Janie Akerlands home where she raises Alpacas, Cashmere goats and a beautiful Angora rabbit for fiber to spin into yarn. One day we had a fun lesson on making goat milk soap. I had so much fun that I went home and made more for myself and even taught my daughter and sister in law how to make it. It went from that to the idea of selling it to friends and family then to the idea of “I could make all sorts of luxurious bath products with goats milk!”
I started doing my homework on other products and got into making goat milk bath bombs that I call “goat bombs”! and wonderful goat milk body butter. After talking to several people about it, I was asked if I had a website and of course I had to get on that right away haha! I started my website in October of 2019 and after a few years decided I needed a store to carry all my products. Here I am today with a store front. I have some other ladies who have brought in their beautiful items as well that are not made with goats milk, however they’re just as wonderful! Come visit and I hope to see you soon!

What You Need to Know When Buying a New-Construction Home
O ered by: Jan Hepp-Struck, Hepp Realty
Inlast month’s article I covered the base-level, or starter-home, type of new construction. But if you are blessed to be in the market for a home at a higher price-point then you may well be looking for something more along the lines of a semi-custom build.
While this level does have a starting point with base floor plans and amenities already included, the quality is higher than a starter home, and the available upgrade and customization options are going to be far greater! It’s also possible that the lot size is going to be larger, and your neighbors won’t be quite as closely packed in. You might say it’s the sweet spot for those who want options, but also don’t have the ability or time to go fully custom.
At this level of new construction, you can realistically expect larger rooms, more natural surfaces like wood or stone as opposed to MDF and Formica or vinyl laminates. Other perks like ceiling fans and nicer electrical and plumbing fi xtures will be more common, as well as more storage areas or built-ins, and larger garage spaces. It’s also very likely that better quality, and larger and/or more decorative style windows will be factored into the home options, or that they will be among the list of possible upgrades if not.
As with the starter-level, there is a base price, and any additions or changes add to the total purchase price. If you are looking at a new semi-custom build, it’s still wise to be working with an experienced realtor who can help you strategically, so you don’t end up spending more than you need or want to.

Don’t overlook importance of cash
O ered by: Tim Roberts - Edward Jones
If you’re an investor, you no doubt pay a great deal of attention to your stocks, bonds and mutual funds. But you shouldn’t forget another key element of your financial strategy: cash.
Cash is part of any financial strategy and investment portfolio, but how much have you thought about the different uses of cash, and how much you really need? Consider these four key purposes:
• Unexpected expenses and emergencies – If you face an interruption in employment, you need an extensive home repair or you encounter an unplanned medical expense, you may need access to cash. If you’re not retired, it’s a good idea to have three to six months of living expenses in cash, possibly supplemented by access to a line of credit. If you’re already retired, keeping up to three months of living expenses in cash, possibly supplemented by a credit line, is a good rule of thumb.
• Specific short-term savings goals – You may have some goals you want to meet within the next year or two, such as a wedding, a vacation or the purchase of a new car. And since you have a little more time to meet these needs than you would for an emergency, you might consider using a money market account or a short-term certificate of deposit (CD), in addition to your other savings vehicles.
• Everyday spending – You’ll always need cash to provide for your dayto-day spending needs, such as your mortgage, other debts, groceries, utilities, entertainment and so on. If you haven’t already done so, you might want to create a budget, which could help highlight areas in which you can reduce spending to free up funds for investing in longterm goals. If you’re still working, keeping one to two months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid account may be sufficient, but if you’re retired, you may need up to 12 months of living expenses, which you can adjust to accommodate outside sources, such as Social Security or a pension.
• Source of investment – You can look at cash as an investment source in two different ways. First, cash can be considered its own distinct asset class, and because it typically behaves differently from other asset classes, it can provide some diversification to a portfolio containing stocks and bonds. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.)And second, the cash in your portfolio could be used as part of a systematic investing strategy in which you put set amounts of money at regular intervals into investment vehicles that are appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance.
Clearly, cash is an important part of planning for the future, but there can be too much of a good thing. While cash may seem like a perpetual safe harbor from the stormy investment seas, it is not without risk. If you hold too much cash, you could underfund your longer-term investments — the ones with the growth potential you need to reach some of your most important goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
Put your cash to work. By using it wisely, you can add a valuable element to your financial picture.

A Healthy Start in Life
Offered by: Mrs. Glover’s Goods
Having years of passion for health and wellness, it took having kids in 2016 to really inspire me to create and cultivate the business and community Mrs. Glover’s Goods has now become. I wanted to provide my family with the best opportunity at natural immunity, equipping them with the best products for their bodies.
I dedicated my time in researching ways to boost the immune system. I stumbled upon a little berry that has since become one of my best allies.
By sharing my love for elderberry with my friends and family, I quickly saw how sharing something I was passionate about with others, needed to be shared with as many people as possible. That is when I launched Mrs. Glover’s Goods in 2019.
I am here to help give others the confidence to know that they are capable of supporting their own health and wellness with something as simple as a daily serving of elderberry. I am committed to making other people’s lives easier and helping them create healthy habits. I have carefully crafted delicious elderberry products to do just that. Products that are superior to others on the market today, a product that you can trust. Here are what customers are saying about Mrs. Glover’s Goods:
“I love this stuff. I use it daily and have it as part of my morning ritual for self care. It’s got the good stuff without the additives you find in ones at the grocery store. Since regularly using it, I have noticed stronger immune defense against those sick around me. Plus being a portable bottle makes it easy to travel with. I highly recommend.”

I spent over three months with another real estate agent before I was introduced to Mike. After I made the switch to Mike, I was able to go under contract in one week! He and his wife have extensive knowledge of the market and made great suggestions at every turn. Mike is a fantastic agent, very responsive, and gets aggressive when you need to in order to get the deal you want done. If I could give him more than five stars, I would. Fantastic experience all the way around and couldn’t have asked for anything more. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, Mike and his team will get the job done without question. Super big thanks to Mike and Lindsy for making my first Colorado home purchase amazing!

Three Lessons from Cobra Kai
Having trained Karate for over four decades, I’m always interested in Martial Arts TV shows and movies. I enjoy watching some good fi ght scenes, but most of all, I like watching martial arts shows that underline the philosophy and thought behind the practice of the martial arts.
Shows like Kung-Fu with David Carridine in the 1970’s were a staple of my childhood, and Bruce Lee fi ghting it out with Chuck Norris in the Roman Colosseum in “ e Way of the Dragon” was the most memorable fi ght scene I have ever seen on a screen.
Watching each season of Cobra Kai has been entertaining, and many people ask me what I think of the show. I wanted to offer three positive observations. Setting aside “details” such as everyone getting a black belt in record time or the excessive amount of Karate brawls, just to mention a couple, I think we can benefit from focusing on some of the good lessons we can gather from the show.
Not a Bad Guy - I was very happy to see a different side of the story of Johnny (the original “bad guy”). In my experience most people are not evil. Yes, some folks can be angry, demanding, dishonest, and more, but there is much good in everyone, if we just take the time to get to know and understand them. e bully at school, for example, may be seen as a bad guy/gal, but we probably miss their own story of frustration at home, neglect, disappointment, or bullying by others. A lesson from Cobra Kai is that we should be patient and try not to judge too quickly. at person who you think is evil, may even become your best friend and hero if given the chance.

Redemption - ere are also many examples of overcoming adversities, trying and failing, winning and losing, all the while continuing to move forward. Over the years I have encountered a few students who quit training because they failed a belt test, or because they did not do well at a tournament. Even worse, their parents allowed them to quit, reinforcing the idea that if you don’t do well at fi rst, one should give up. e majority of students however, are resilient and use any setback as a lesson to work harder and perform better each time. One of the main underlying themes of the show, I believe, is redemption, and how it is within everyone’s reach.
No Guarantees - Finally, I think that the series demonstrates a quote from Master Jasuhiro Konishi, who stated that “Karate aims to build character, improve human behavior, and cultivate modesty; it does not, however, guarantee it.” Just the fact that a person practices Karate or other martial arts, it does not make them good, respectful, or disciplined. Karate in fact fosters these traits, but it is up to the individual to take full advantage of their training. I think Cobra Kai demonstrates how Martial Arts can be a path for positive development, but also how we always have a choice in the matter.
I hope you also enjoy watching the series, but even more, maybe you’ll consider starting Karate Training. Whatever your age or current physical abilities, Karate is a great discipline for children and adults, and we’d love to see you on the mats.
This is the BEST time of the year!! We start to see the leaves change colors, kids running around in fun and scary costumes AND Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)!!!
Starting October 15, you can make changes to your Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or your Medicare Advantage Plan. e changes you make during AEP, will go into effect on January 1, 2023.
2023 is bringing out some really cool benefits in the Medicare Advantage Plan world. Comparing the different benefits of the different plans is an excellent idea. Working with a broker (someone like me) will help you sort through all the different offerings.
Be aware, there is a lot of creative marketing out there. You’re going to see confusing commercials along with all sorts of mailers. If you ever get concerned that you’re missing out on benefits available, please talk to your personal insurance agent. If you do not have one, I am always happy to help you sort through your questions.
Insurance agents do not charge you to speak to them. We get compensated by the insurance companies. is makes it great for both you and I because we can have a conversation and not worry about how much it costs.
Please take this time to review your current coverage. If you would like some assistance, I’m always happy to help.

Celebrating 20 Years!
Offered by: Melissa Rippy - Rippy Insurance Agency / Allstate
Cooler days are here again, YAHOO! I don’t know about you, but I’m excited for fall, the changing of colors and cooler temperatures after this hot summer we have had.
On October 4th, 2022, I will be celebrating my 20th year in the insurance industry. Eleven of those years were as a claims adjuster handling litigated files and the other nine years have flown by while starting my agency off the ground and from scratch back in 2013.
When we opened back on November 1st, we had zero customers. Over the next nine years, we have met many people in our community who have entrusted the Rippy Agency to help protect what matters most. You are the reason we are still here in the Brighton community and we wouldn’t be here without you so it’s time to celebrate!
We are having a client appreciation event on October 5th from 5 pm to 8 pm at Copper Rail Bar & Grill. This celebration is reserved for clients and business partners. We’ll have food, drinks and prizes from locally owned businesses. You MUST RVSP to attend and join the festivities!
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/410020220517
You have probably seen that there is critical blood shortage country wide. Right now, there is an emergency blood shortage and Vitalant’s blood supply has dropped by nearly 50% since the start of summer. On November 1st, we are bringing back a Vitalant blood drive to the Rippy Agency. You can sign up online at www.vitalant.org and enter Blood Drive code 10360. We hope to see you there! HAPPY FALL, Y’ALL!

The storybook marriage was over, Mary had lost her job, and with the extra time at home she discovered her husband’s infidelity. Mary’s father had died seven years ago and left her a substantial inheritance. Not believing that her husband could do such a thing, Mary had simply combined the inheritance with the other family assets. Unfortunately, in the divorce there was no way to distinguish the inheritance from the marital property. Being unable to determine the difference, the judge divided all of the assets between Mary and her unfaithful husband. To add insult to injury, Mary had just lost half of her inheritance.
But the outcome didn’t have to be this way. If Mary’s father had done a thorough estate plan, he would have left the inheritance to Mary in trust. Mary would control the trust, but the trust would help her keep the inherited assets separate from the marital assets. If Mary used the assets inside the trust for her benefit, but did not draw them out of the trust and spend them, she could have easily identified the inherited assets in the divorce. As a result, the inherited assets would not have been divided in the divorce.
Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookie-cutter form-driven estate plans. Individuals should look closely at all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide to them while they are alive, and provide to their families after their death. After all, when is it okay that your child’s ex-spouse receives the inheritance you left to your child?
If you would like to learn more about an estate planning process that is producing great results for families, visit www.EstatePlans atWork.com to sign up for a complimentary educational workshop.

Flu Season - Get Vaccinated
Offered by: Kelly Fausey, CPNP- Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.
October is a great time of year to contact the office for your family’s annual influenza vaccination. e flu season is fast approaching, with children back in school and cooler temperatures. Influenza is a respiratory illness that targets the nose, throat, and lungs, with symptoms ranging from moderate to severe, which can mimic a cold. However, influenza virus is different than a cold due to the fast onset of symptoms and severity of complications that can occur. Influenza symptoms include sudden fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, fatigue and in younger children, vomiting and diarrhea. Influenza virus is spread by what is called droplets, meaning it is spread by coughing, sneezing, and talking from an infected person. Influenza virus is most contagious during the first 3-4 days of illness; however many adults can continue to spread the virus for 5-7 days. Children who have weaker immune systems can spread the virus longer, around 7-8 days. Typically, symptoms do not appear for up to 2 days after being infected by the influenza virus. is leads to the spread of the virus between many adults/ children without realizing they are sick with influenza.
e Center of Disease Control and Prevention estimates millions of people a year get sick with the influenza virus (CDC.gov). e population most concerning for severity of illnesses from influenza are children under 5 years old, in particular children 2 years and under. Many children are hospitalized each year for complications from influenza virus. e Center of Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone get an annual influenza vaccination to prevent the spread of the virus. Influenza vaccination can be given starting at 6-months-old. Brighton Pediatrics will be offering visits for influenza vaccinations this fall. Please contact Brighton Pediatrics for your children’s yearly influenza vaccination.

The Thinning of
Time for Divination and Connecting with your Ancestors
Offered by: Wellyssa’s Well
Our ancestors have powerful influence in our lives, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. Ancestry effects our lives in many ways: the color of our eyes and skin, the way we walk, those seemingly innate or inborn talents that manifest themselves with little or no background or life exposure, our religion and belief systems. ese can all be influences that have flowed through your ancestors to you, today.
Our ancestors have a lot to tell us. ey want to tell us their story, they want to help us to not make the same mistakes they did, they want us to remember them. Sometimes healing is needed.
ere may be “bad blood” that needs to be addressed, a transgression perpetrated by an ancestor that needs to be made right; there may be forgiveness or compassion that is needed. Ancestor work can bring healing to old wounds.
Perhaps you have a person who was dear to you that has passed and moved on from this world? Maybe you’d like to reconnect with them one more time? Maybe there’s something that was left unsaid and you just need a chance to actually say that to them. You might just need to know that they are OK, and you might want to let them know that you are ok.
Traditionally, in May and October through mid-November, the veil between the realms of the living and the dead, thins for a while. is liminal space, this threshold, is more easily crossed during these times. Also, from an astrological perspective, the Sun moves into Scorpio, the zodiac sign associated with death and rebirth and occult explorations. is is a good time to do ancestor work and divination.
ere are numerous ways to accomplish this work, and we will decide on that when we meet. is work is priced by 15 minute increment - at $20/15 minutes.
Divination: is is also an excellent time for divination. I can help you get answers, or understanding of a situation through tarot, oracle or the throwing of bones. $40/30 minutes, $80/60 minutes.

udoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game. If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Start a game today and make it a part of your daily brain workout!
The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9×9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if:
• Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9
Any 3×3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9
Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9

Aboutonce a week I get a call from someone who is having problems hearing and after a few questions find out that they stopped hearing after trying to clean their ears. Almost every one of these callers either used a cotton swab or some form of oil to try to clean their ears themselves. Sometimes the hearing is just muffled while other times they lose their hearing completely.
Ear wax is a natural substance that nearly everyone produces in their ear canal. It is usually made up of two substances that are secreted in the canal, sebaceous and cerumen, and dead skin. Other materials such a loose hairs and dust or dirt may also be present in ear wax. If everything is working normally the ear is self-cleaning and wax and debris can simply be wiped out of the bowl of the ear.
Ear wax may build up and block the ear canal potentially causing hearing loss, infection, pain, tinnitus and vertigo or balance issues. Build up can be caused by excessively thick or sticky cerumen, small or narrow ear canals, or foreign objects pushing the wax back into the canal causing it to become impacted. To prevent impacted wax, follow this advice which has been around for ages: “Never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow.”
Professional removal of earwax is typically done by flushing, using physical instruments such as a curette or forceps, or suction. Over-thecounter solutions exist for softening and flushing wax, but should never be used until knowing exactly what is in the canal. Numerous tools and devices exist for self extraction of wax. Every time a new gadget for removing ear wax at home comes out, I get countless comments and questions from my patients. At one point I had a drawer full of worthless devices patients had given me that were purchased from ads they saw online, in magazines, or on television.
Anytime someone finds out what I do they ask about how to clean ears. My response generally goes like this. “Everyone is different. The only way to know what is in the ear canal is to look. Yes, you can potentially clean it yourself depending on the amount, composition, and texture of the wax, and size and shape of the canal. However, you should never put anything in the ear to clean it until you actually know what is in it because ear infections, damage to the tympanic membrane and wax blockage can all have similar symptoms. Putting a foreign object in the canal can push wax in further and if there is a hole in the ear drum, fluids could enter the middle ear causing more severe problems.” In short, before I ever give specific advice about ear cleaning, I look in the ear canal.

October Home To-Dos
Offered by: City of Brighton Communications
A hh, October – A great time for leaf peeping and pumpkin spice lattes.
To add to your fall checklist, it’s also prime time to check your home for potential breakdowns before winter. Here are a few things to look out for:
• Check for cracks in walkways to prevent a trip or fall. Small cracks can be fi xed with epoxy. e City of Brighton recognizes that in some cases, such repairs can be costly to homeowners. Take advantage of Brighton’s 50/50 Sidewalk, Curb & Gutter Replacement Program and have the city pay for 50-percent of the replacement cost. Read more and sign up: www.brightonco.gov/5050program.
• Clean and repair siding to prevent mildew. How? Bring out that pressure washer to clean it up. Use this time to also check for rotten areas and inspect caulking.
• Inspect faucets for leaks in the kitchen and bathrooms. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a faucet that leaks at one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. How to check for a leak? Turn on the faucet, turn it off and then watch for dripping. Check out Brighton’s Water Conservation and Efficiency web page for tips on how teflon tape and replacing equipment with WaterSense products can help - www.brightonco.gov/ waterconservationandefficiency. And don’t forget - Shut off exterior faucets and store hoses for the winter.
• Cover or store outdoor furniture and grills. Doing so will protect them from the elements.
• Change air fi lters. Try and do this regularly. According to the EPA, if a fi lter is dirty or overloaded, it won’t work well. e benefit? Lower energy bills and a longer-lasting HVAC system.
• Check safety devices. Test smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors (batteries may need to be replaced). Also, check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher.
• Maintain your wood stove or fi replace. Make sure they are serviced before lighting the first fire of the season.
• Service yard equipment. Change your oil and fi lter and install new blades if necessary.
• Remove leaves before the fi rst snow settles in. By removing leaves, not only will your grass be preserved, you’ll avoid having to reseed next spring to replace grass killed by snow mold. Doing so will also remove any wet hazards. Also - trim any dead tree limbs. Brighton has a free tree limb drop off site - Click here for details: www.brightonco.gov/ treelimbdropoff.
• Clean gutters after most of the leaves have fallen. Inspect for cracks and loose parts in need of repair.

1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
2. Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
3. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
4. A lways walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
5. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
6. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up.
7. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
8. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating.
9. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
Costumes for a Safe Halloween
1. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
4. W hen selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
Drive Extra Safely on Halloween
1. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
2. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
3. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
4. Get rid of any distractions - like your phone - in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
5. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
6. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Be especially alert for kids during those hours.

As a home seller, you have a lot more control in pleasing buyers than you think. If you start the selling process by learning what buyers really want, you can prepare your home to come as close to their dreams as possible. Here’s what you can do to please buyers and get higher offers for your home.
Curb Appeal
You only get one chance to make a first impression. Your home should sell to the buyer from the curb. at’s how important curb appeal is. Your buyer should be so impressed, so charmed, so delighted that they want to leap out of the car and run inside.
How do you create curb appeal? Show attention to detail. Your home has to be prettier, cleaner, and in better condition than its neighbors.
Start with sweeping the drive, walkway, and porch or entry of dirt and debris. Get rid of leggy bushes, wilted flowers, and broken tree limbs. Plant fresh flowers in the front garden or in containers at the entry.
Power-wash the exterior and hand-wash the windows. Touch up paint around the windows, if needed. Paint the front door a fresh, modern color. Replace the door hardware and porch sconces. e idea is that the home looks fresh.
Space
e number one reason why people buy homes is to have more room. Whether they’re moving from an apartment or moving up from the home they have, they want to have plenty of space to do the things they enjoy.
If you have a large home, you’re golden, but that doesn’t mean you’ve got it made. You can ruin a buyer’s first impression with too much clutter, so make sure to keep your home picked up so your buyer can see your home’s features clearly and easily.
What if you don’t have a lot of space? Plan to do some storing and staging. Rent a storage unit and put away all out-of-season clothes, toys, and home decorations and accessories. Clean off all tables and countertops so you have only the minimum of things your need to operate your home. Empty closets of anything that is “stored” and move it to the storage unit. e small expense you’ll pay in storage fees you’ll more than make back from your buyer’s offer.
Updates
ere’s a reason why first-time buyers and singles tend to buy older homes –they’re more affordable than buying new. So unless your buyer is a building contractor, chances are they want a home that’s as updated as possible.
You may not be interested in putting in a new kitchen to sell your home, but you can do a few things to make buyers happy. Replace the most dated features – cabinet doors, countertops, and appliances.
Bathrooms are so personal that they can easily turn buyers off. Invest in new towels, bathmats, and a shower curtain. row out slimy soaps and limp-ragged bath sponges. Replace with liquid shower and bath products. You can take all the new stuff with you to the next home.
Painting is expected by buyers, but don’t repaint the same colors that you chose 10 years ago. Pick an updated neutral like a warm grey. Be sure to choose a color that will complement the architecture and flooring in your home.
Homebuyers aren’t expecting your home to be the same as a new home, but they do expect to see pride of ownership. e more tweaks, updates, and repairs you perform, the more confident your buyers will be that they’re choosing the right home.
