As spring fills the air and the days grow longer, it brings with it not only the promise of new beginnings but also moments of reflection and gratitude – inviting us to join in several delightful rituals of the season.
Spring planting in May. There’s no better time to roll up your sleeves, dig into the soil, and sow the seeds that will bring beauty and abundance. There’s something inherently therapeutic about getting your hands dirty and nurturing life from seed to sprout.
At the heart of May lies Mother’s Day, a day dedicated to celebrating and nurturing those who have shaped our lives with boundless love and unwavering support.
And May culminates with our observance of Memorial Day as we honor the courageous men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country, we are reminded of the profound impact of their selflessness.
Let’s all take a moment to embrace the simple act of planting seeds as we honor the interconnectedness of our lives, and the legacy of those who have gone before us.

Down Payment Assistance —
Thedream of homeownership can feel daunting for prospective buyers struggling with saving enough for a down payment. Fortunately, there are down payment assistance programs across the U.S. that can help make homeownership more accessible. ese programs—generally offered by government agencies, non-profits, or employers—provide financial support to qualified homebuyers, typically in the form of grants, loans, or tax credits that cover part or the full down payment, and sometimes, closing costs.
Eligibility criteria, funding, and assistance amounts vary widely. Approximately 60% target first-time buyers, while others focus on certain demographics or areas. Research programs in your area to determine which ones you may qualify for and understand their requirements.
If you are considering looking for down payment assistance, you can increase your chances of success by starting early and getting your ducks lined up before applying.
• Research available programs. Keep in mind that some programs have limited funding and may have waiting lists or application deadlines.
• Prepare required documentation. You will need proof of income, assets, and financial history, and perhaps other items specific to the applicable program. Having everything ready to present can help streamline the process.
• Know your credit score and improve it if needed. e higher your score, the better your chances for approval!
e application process can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Working with a professional who can help you understand and navigate the process is recommended. Give us a call—we can help!

Bill met with his attorney and had some estate planning documents prepared. He went home and placed them in his gun safe. When his children were visiting, he proudly told them that “I took care of it.” “It” was referring to planning for his disability or death.
Bill had taken a critical step towards having an estate plan that would help things go more smoothly on his disability or death. However, like many people, he let his children believe that because he had prepared documentation, that in the future there would be nothing else to do.
Look at it from the perspective of his children. They took their father at his word, that “I took care of it” and assumed that there was nothing to do upon his disability or death. This is a critical mistake many families make. The reality is that there is a lot to do when a person dies. There are no self-executing magic estate plans that miraculously take care of things in the future. Someone has to take action and deal with matters upon your disability or death, and that “someone” is usually your family members.
Most family members don’t know what to do, how to do it, or understand how they should pay for the assistance they need. There is a 100% chance you’re going to die. And there is a 100% chance that someone will need to do something after your death. If things are going to go smoothly and effectively after your death, you must take steps to prepare your family.
Remember, estate planning is a process of preparation prior to your disability or death. It is not having a certain type of document. By taking the time to prepare, you can be assured that the process will be easier on your family.

Back pain affects millions worldwide, often disrupting daily life and productivity. Whether it’s a persistent ache or a sharp, stabbing sensation, the impact can be debilitating. ACUTE back pain can be immediate and last days to weeks; unlike CHRONIC back pain which might be 12 weeks or more. Amidst the quest for relief, chiropractic care and non-surgical spinal decompression offer promising solutions.
Chiropractic care, rooted in the belief that proper alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure can enable the body to heal itself, has gained traction as a holistic approach to managing back pain. Chiropractors use hands or instruments to realign the spine, aiming to alleviate pain and improve overall function. By addressing the root cause of discomfort rather than merely masking symptoms, chiropractic care offers a pathway to long-term relief.
Non-surgical spinal decompression, another innovative therapy gaining recognition, targets conditions like herniated discs and spinal stenosis. Unlike invasive surgical procedures, spinal decompression utilized gentle traction forces to relieve pressure on spinal discs, promoting healing and alleviating pain. is non-invasive approach not only reduces the risks associated with surgery but also boasts a shorter recovery time, allowing individuals to swiftly resume their daily activities.
Moreover, chiropractic care and non-surgical spinal decompression prioritize personalized treatment plans tailored to individual needs. Whether it’s through spinal adjustments or decompression therapy, patients receive comprehensive care designed to optimize their well-being. Mom, You Are My Champion!
Offered by: Colorado Karate Club
Many years ago, back in the 1970’s and 1980’s when my brothers and I were just starting in Karate, my mom and dad would take us to Karate tournaments and would cheer us on, win or lose. Always from the sidelines, they did their best to support our passion for the martial arts, but oddly enough, never showed an interest in doing it themselves.
Fast forward twenty five years when I opened my own Karate school in Brighton, to see my mom, in her mid fifties, for the first time putting on a Karate uniform. She said to me after she started training, “It is so different… I’ve watched you boys for years and years, and I thought it would be easy… it’s not easy!” But that didn’t stop her, and now, for over two decades, she’s been setting an example for everyone who ever made excuses like “I’m too old to start”, or “I’ve never done anything like this before”, or “this is too hard…”
Today, at the ripe age of 76 years, she still trains consistently, making the 45 minute drive each way to our Dojo twice per week. So for me, it is a great honor to be able to recognize her hard work and dedication whenever I get a chance. is weekend will be very special, when she’ll be receiving her ird Degree Black Belt; and I couldn’t be more proud to be the one who gives it to her. She’s earned that and more.
On the other hand though, it is a funny thing, to be my very own mom’s Sensei, but I think for both of us, it is, and has been, a wonderful experience. Every night after classes we sit in my office and chat about anything - sometimes for hours -, not as a Sensei and student, but now as mother and son. I love to be able to share this with her. I’m her instructor in class, but as soon as it’s over, I’m just her son again. It’s a unique relationship of mutual love and respect which I cherish so very much.
I hope that, as we approach mother’s day this year, aside from the cards and the gifts, everyone who is still fortunate to have their moms with them will make the time to spend it with her. To me, everything seems so insufficient to show her that I care, except for the time we spend together.
To all the moms out there, have a wonderful mother’s day, and to my own mother, Janet Martens, just wanted to say that you are my champion. ¡Feliz Dia de la Madre mami!

Hearing In Noise
Several months ago, a woman came in with her significant other after he had gotten the new Genesis AI hearing aids. He was pleased with the performance and they wanted to know if there was anything that I could do for her. She was wearing her second pair of hearing aids that were just under 2 years old and she was having significant problems with hearing and understanding, especially in noise. She also was having problems understanding her friends during a weekly meeting. After removing wax from her ears and cleaning her hearing aids to see if it would offer any improvement, we set up an appointment for a comprehensive hearing evaluation. At that next appointment, we performed an air conduction test, bone conduction test, and a number of different speech tests. en we completed the speech-in-noise test which revealed just how difficult it was for her to understand in noise. Her brain just would not process multiple sound sources.
Upon finding this, I gave my recommendation for the Genesis AI hearing aids, and also recommended an assistive listening device called a Table Microphone to be used in noisy environments, such as restaurants, as well as at her weekly meeting. She decided she would like to try the devices and the following week we delivered them to her. As soon as they were fit to her, she noticed an immediate improvement in her hearing with the new hearing aids. Her ability to hear in noise improved slightly, but it still was not good enough for her to be comfortable in a noisy situation. We then reviewed how to use the Table Microphone and set a follow up appointment. When she returned the following week, she was ecstatic about the Table Microphone. She said she used it during the week, and that it was wonderful for her meeting, explaining that she heard and understood everything that was said for the first time since she started attending the meetings a number of years ago. Not only was she excited, all the other group members were excited
for her, and many expressed interest in getting the device for themselves. Since that time, I have recommended the device to several more people and had similar results.
Background noise can make it difficult for people with normal hearing to hear and understand speech. For those with even a mild or moderate hearing loss, background noise can make it impossible to understand speech. For some, simply amplifying the sounds is enough to help understand speech in background noise. But the more severe the hearing loss, and the longer a person has had hearing loss, the more difficult it becomes to understand in noise, even with hearing aids. Unfortunately, difficulty hearing in noise leads to a negative feedback loop where hearing loss leads to avoiding social interactions which leads to decreased ability to hear in noise and diminished mental and emotional health.
Hearing aid manufacturers continuously work to develop technologies and instruments to help improve hearing in all environments, but especially in noise. Some of these include advanced microphones, microphone placement, and multiple microphones on devices for directionality. In addition to hardware, the software that runs in the hearing aids works to distinguish different types of sounds and process them in such a way to make speech more audible. e latest technology actually uses processors that mimic the way the human brain separates sounds to hear in noise. e Edge Mode+ in Genesis AI devices also allows for real-time analysis and adjustments of current actual environment at just the touch of a button, and also allows for advanced adjustment using a smartphone app. For those who have lost the ability to understand in noise, external devices, such as remote microphones, table microphones or other streaming devices give a significant advantage as mentioned in the story above.

Term vs. Perm:
If you’ve been thinking about life insurance, especially if you have family, loved ones, or anyone who depends on you financially, you might be curious about the different kinds of policies available. Which type is right for you?Essentially, you can look at two main categories of life insurance: term and permanent. Term insurance is a pay-as-you-go option that covers a specific amount of time, usually 20 years or fewer. Term insurance benefits are paid to your beneficiaries free of federal income taxes if you pass away during the coverage period, but there’s no opportunity to build cash value.Permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, offers coverage for as long as you pay the premiums, and in addition to providing a tax-free death benefit, also offers a chance to build equity, or cash value, on a tax-deferred basis. When determining which type of insurance is appropriate for your needs, you’ll want to consider these factors:
• Cost – Term insurance is generally affordable for most people, which is why it may be particularly suitable for parents and young adults who may be at the beginning of their careers. Permanent insurance is typically more expensive, largely because it is meant to last for one’s lifetime and some of the premiums go toward building cash value in the policy and paying for other features. Generally, the younger and healthier you are when you purchase permanent insurance, the lower your rates will be.
• Length of time insurance is needed – If you think you will only need life insurance for a certain period — perhaps until your children are grown — you might lean toward term insurance. If you feel the need for life insurance for other goals throughout your lifetime, for whatever reason — you might have a special needs child, or perhaps you want to use your policy to help pay for retirement, or you wish to include the policy as part of your legacy and estate plans — you may want to consider some type of permanent insurance.
• Investment preferences – You may have heard the phrase “buy term and invest the difference.” Essentially, this just means that an investor could purchase low-cost term insurance, and then invest the money that was saved by not getting permanent insurance. is can be a valuable strategy in some situations, but people often don’t actually invest the difference. A permanent insurance policy, through the payment of premiums, may result in a steady buildup of cash value or continued contributions to the policy’s investment components. For many people, this discipline is helpful.
• Future insurability – If you have health issues, it could become difficult to get permanent insurance after you’ve reached the end of a term insurance policy. (Some term insurance policies do offer the opportunity to convert to permanent coverage, usually without the need for a medical exam.) You could avoid this potential problem by purchasing permanent insurance when you are still young and healthy.
Ultimately, you will need to weigh the various factors involved in the permanent-versus-term decision. You also might benefit from consulting a financial professional, who can evaluate which type of insurance is most appropriate for your situation. But whether it’s term or permanent, make sure you have the coverage you need to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Why Vacation?
Taking a vacation is not merely a luxury; it’s an essential aspect of maintaining a healthy work-life balance and nurturing mental and emotional well-being. Stepping away from the daily grind allows the mind and body to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate. It provides a muchneeded break from the routine and pressures of work, offering an opportunity to engage in leisure activities, and spend quality time with loved ones or oneself.
is detachment from regular responsibilities can lead to reduced stress levels, a boost in creativity, and an increase in overall happiness. Vacations also offer a chance for reflection and personal growth, allowing individuals to return to their daily lives with a fresh perspective, renewed energy, and perhaps a newfound appreciation for the world around them. In a world that often prioritizes constant productivity, taking time off is a critical act of self-care that can improve not only personal health and relationships but also enhance professional performance by preventing burnout and increasing job satisfaction.
As for me, I’m taking this good advice and taking some time off this month to enjoy the beach and do some whitewater rafting. And I hope that you can make some fun plans this year to get away, relax and enjoy some of your favorite outdoor activities as well. See you next month!

Soul Retrieval
As a result of traumatic events or deep physical/emotional wounding, sometimes a piece of our soul breaks off, shredding from ourselves, and flees to a place of perceived safety in the astral realms. There it hides, until it is called back, if it is ever called back. This leaves our soul incomplete and fragmented, it leaves us less and less able, over time, to emotionally cope with life and to experience desire and enthusiasm for life . Retrieving these lost pieces of soul is deep meditative work using Shamanic techniques. With the assistance of our guides, I will assist you in your journey to find those lost pieces. I will guide you in the process of reintegrating the lost fragment back into your soul. This integration brings relief from unknown longings, doubts and fears, while enlivening and healing the soul as it moves towards completeness. Do I need it?
Anyone who has experienced a significant traumatic event or a deep physical/ emotional wounding in their life, (this lifetime or past lifetimes), will benefit from soul retrieval. The human race has been on this planet for over 12,000 years, experiencing multiple lifetimes and multiple traumas. I have yet to meet anyone who does not have a fragmented soul.
Is it safe?
Yes. The process is non-invasive, compassionate and private; you will not need to re-experience the trauma, although you may become aware of it and some memories may resurface. Homework will be given to assist you in the continued integration of your soul fragment for a short time after the actual work is performed.

Using Medicare When Traveling
Offered by:
I hope you’re enjoying nicer weather and ready for all the pretty colors of spring and summer. I know that this time of year brings about thoughts of travel.
If you have Medicare, you may or may not know how your Medicare coverage works when it comes to travel. In fact, a lot of people I meet with usually have a little bit of fear around traveling and what might follow if they have a medical emergency.
ere are a few ways that Medicare plans cover you when you’re traveling
e first is the Medicare Advantage Plan. Medicare Advantage Plans come with emergency and urgent coverage across the country. Some of the plans also give you emergency worldwide coverage. is means that if you’re on vacation or visiting family out of town and an emergency arises, you are able to go to the closest emergency room and you’ll be covered just as if you would have been in your home area. e same applies to Urgent Care.
With worldwide emergency coverage, you are covered out of the country if a medical emergency happens. Here are the steps, while you are there you will need to pay the bill, keep the receipt and when you come home, submit the receipts to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. e plan will pay just as if it would have paid had you been in the country. A lot of these plans will waive the Emergency Room Copay when you are out of the country. Unfortunately plans cannot bill internationally but they can reimburse you. e second arrangement is if you have Medicare as your primary payer, you can go to any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. You might also have Tricare for Life, Champ VA, or a Medicare Supplement. ese plans will pay second after Medicare has paid. With Medicare you are only covered in the United States, with limited coverage near the US border. Some Medicare Supplements have a small lifetime amount of Foreign Travel Emergency Coverage (Plans C, D, F, G, M & N).
If you’re not sure what your plan includes, I am happy to help. Please feel free to give me a call at 720-655-6015.

How To Manage Your 401(K) When You Switch Jobs
Considering all options for managing funds in a former employer’s retirement plan
Presented by T. Lloyd Worth, Worth Wealth Management
Inthe past, baby boomers and Generation Xers often held on to jobs for 10 or more years. Some professionals stayed with the same company for most of their working lives. e Great Recession changed this for many. Now, people have become more comfortable moving from job to job. Millennials are especially adept at this. ey change jobs three times more often than other generations.
Changing jobs introduces a new dilemma for people, regardless of why or how often they do so: what to do with the 401(k) account they had with their former employer. Should they consider taking the cash distribution, or could there be a better choice?
Consider All Options
Here are some options to consider:
1. Take the cash: When people make financial decisions, they may choose to do so based on interest rates and cash in hand. But another important factor to consider is taxes. When you take cash distributions from your 401(k) account, you may pay a lot of money in taxes and fees. is includes a 20% federal withholding tax and then another 10% penalty for people who are under the age of 59 ½ years old.
2. Directly roll the money into an IRA: An individual retirement account (IRA) is much like a 401(k), but it can remain independent of any employer. You may want to consider this option if you change jobs often or if a new employer does not offer retirement plans.
3. Use the new employer’s plan: Some professionals prefer to keep rolling their 401(k) savings forward. You may want to consider this option if you mostly work corporate jobs with good 401(k) plans. Rolling the money over directly from one employer to the next may also help to eliminate any fees from the IRS. Note that even if you are not yet eligible to contribute to your new employer’s retirement plan, you should be able to roll over your money.
4. Keep the old plan: If you have at least $5,000 in your old retirement account, your employer must allow you to retain your 401(k) account if you want to. You can no longer make contributions to the account, but you can make decisions regarding the investment of your assets. You may want to consider this option if you leave your job to start a business or want to add some diversity to your retirement holdings.
e Importance of Research
e right approach depends on a number of factors. Aside from those mentioned above, you should consider the rules at your company as well as longevity. Is the company in financial trouble? What happens to your retirement plan if it goes under? Some employers may also set lower thresholds to allow former employees to leave their retirement accounts behind. Speak directly with the human resources department to get some answers.

Pushing Past Obstacles to Physical Activity
Offered by: Dawn Dycus, MD, - Brighton Pediatrics
Despite the benefits of regular physical activity, many families have excuses for why they aren’t more active. Benefits of physical activity include spending time with friends and family, maintaining a healthy weight, improving body image, increasing energy levels, decreasing stress, and just plain having fun! Some excuses or barriers to getting enough activity include things like: “I don’t have enough time,” “I’m not good at any sports,” “I’m too overweight,” or “My neighborhood just isn’t safe enough.”
For each obstacle, there are several solutions that could work. One suggestion is to build activity into your day (such as taking the stairs, walking the floor of the mall once before shopping, or parking the car far from an entrance to walk more). If sports is an issue, try other enjoyable activities such as dancing, hiking, riding a bike, or swimming. Sometimes having an “exercise buddy” to be active with 2-3 times a week will increase how much fun you have and keep you on track.
Starting slow with 10-15 minutes of activity per day and then regularly increasing activity time is good for those who feel they are too overweight or lack the endurance to be active. If outdoor activities don’t feel safe enough in your neighborhood, then indoor activities such as dancing or workout DVDs are an option. Most communities will have a YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, or local recreation center available; signing up can be an incentive to use the facility for physical activity. Finally, consider writing down a personal activity plan as a guide for keeping on track.

On February 22, 2024 - The Parkland Metropolitan District No. 1 sent Palizzi Farm a notice of intent to purchase a wide strip of Palizzi’s farmland for a permanent easement that would extend across the farm from east to west for their drainage project.
If Palizzi Farm rejects the purchase, PARKLAND WILL MOVE FORWARD WITH LEGAL PROCEEDINGS TO EXERCISE EMINENT DOMAIN, meaning they will take the land they want for the underground drainage project. Additionally, the Parkland Metro District wants IMMEDIATE access to the Farm to begin construction, which would abruptly END the 2024 farming season for Palizzi Farm.
This action would force the closure of Palizzi farm stand located on Bromley Lane because 90% of the produce sold there is grown on the farm. Palizzi Farm would lose the entirety of the crops already planted, will have to pay the workers hired for the entire season, and be unable to supply the five different summer farmers markets it attends every year.
On May 13, 2024
There is an Immediate Possession Hearing where a judge will determine the fate of the 2024 farming season and ultimately, the ability of Palizzi Farm to operate their produce farm in the future.
COME SHOW SUPPORT FOR PALIZZI FARM at the hearing Monday, May 13th at the Adams County Courthouse Division C. The hearing is scheduled for 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

6 External Influences That Lessen Home Values
Home prices are still near record highs, so if you’re purchasing your next home in a cheaper or unfamiliar area, be aware of outside influences that can lower your property values.
Noise. Traffic noise, sirens, construction, and other noise pollution can impact home values. Areas to avoid include next to a freeway, on a busy thoroughfare, or across the street from a school.
Danger. Crime statistics can be found at USA.gov. You can search the Office of Justice Programs for known sex offenders living in your area.
Industrial pollution. Builders often look for land in industrial areas where the parcels are cheaper and larger to construct apartments and houses. Visit The Environmental Protection Agency and enter your address to learn how emissions and releases from industry are impacting your neighborhood.

High number of rentals. If you’re buying a condominium or house managed by a homeowner’s association, you have the right to see all governing documents and financial records. High turnover rates make it more difficult to get mortgage loans and expose you to transients who may not care about their neighbors since they don’t own the property.
Bad neighbors. You’ll have to introduce yourself to potential neighbors and ask them what the neighborhood is like, but you can also tell a lot from the state of other properties near your next home. Rundown homes around your home make it less desirable.
Your Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colorado Real Estate Forever Agent SM will be able to help you research the home and neighborhood. We are always here to help with your real estate needs and questions. Call us at 303-905-8850 or visit BHHScore.com
