Xeriscaping — the ROI is Nothing to Sneeze At!

If you aren’t already familiar with the many benefits of Xeriscaping your home, this may be the year to make the switch to more native and drought-resistant plants and materials around your yard.

It’s estimated that annually the average US household uses 300+ gallons of water per day, and nearly 30 percent of that water goes to outdoor uses, primarily irrigation. We’ve been conditioned to believe that good curb appeal is only achievable with big lush green lawns, but this is not true. ere are a lot of reasons to explore other options, especially these days with continuously increasing water rates and irrigation restrictions due to greater demand on available water resources.

Wealth Building Strategies While Raising a Family

Raising a family is rewarding … and expensive. Consider taking these steps to support your family financially through a program of smart investing.

Building a career and raising a family requires management skills. Juggling your time, priorities, and money now while planning for the future can be daunting. Saving now to send your kids to college, take care of your parents as they age, and pursuing a comfortable retirement can be challenging.

Savings alone may not be enough. Saving part of your monthly income is the first step toward building wealth, but with current interest and inflation rates, saving may not be able to do the job on its own. After putting aside enough cash for an emergency fund, you may want to consider investing in a diversified set of investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, and more. I can show you how to match your investment portfolio to your tolerance for risk, your age, your goals, and your income to help you build your wealth.

Start with building your retirement nest egg. Most often, parents put their children’s future first by building a college fund. While this is certainly important, preparing for retirement should take precedence. Your children have options that you don’t. Your kids can use a combination of savings, loans, and scholarships to attend college. You must live on Social Security and the wealth you’ve accumulated. e last thing you want is to depend on your children’s financial support when they begin working and you stop.

Use the tax code to help build wealth. If you’re covered by a qualified employer retirement plan, not only should consider making the largest contributions you can afford, but you should also make sure the money is invested in assets with the potential to provide long-term growth. If you are self-employed or not covered at work, consider an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and/or Self-Employed 401(k), preferably self-directed ones, to hold your investment portfolio. Not only are contributions taxdeductible each year (subject to income and contribution limits), but all your earnings are tax-deferred until you start making withdrawals. You can delay withdrawals until age 70½, giving you many years of tax-deferred growth potential.

Take advantage of other tax breaks. While contributions to a 529 education savings plan are not deductible from your taxes, growth is tax-deferred, and if used for qualified educational purposes, withdrawals are tax-free. Your employer may offer tax-advantaged benefits like cafeteria plans. As your wealth grows, consider if it’s appropriate to allocate money into investment vehicles like tax-free municipal bonds*, Treasury InflationProtected Securities, whole life insurance, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and qualified annuities, to name a few.

Four ways to use cash wisely

There has been a lot of talk about a “cashless” society, but it’s not here yet. In fact, cash can still be a valuable element of your overall financial picture – if you employ it wisely. But how?

Consider these four key uses of cash:

• Everyday spending – Of course, you need sufficient cash on hand to pay for your cost of living – mortgage, debt payments, utilities, groceries, etc. You’ll likely rely on your savings or checking accounts to pay for these needs.

• Unexpected expenses and emergencies – It’s never a bad idea to establish a monthly budget. But, as you know, life is unpredictable – and sometimes you may encounter “budget-busting” expenses, such as a major home repair or a large medical bill. If you haven’t planned for these costs, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments, such as your IRA and 401(k), which can result in taxes, penalties and less money for your retirement. A better alternative is to prepare in advance by building an emergency fund containing up to six months’ worth of living expenses in cash, or at least in a highly liquid account, held separately from your regular checking or savings account so you won’t inadvertently spend the money.

• Short-term savings goal – When you are investing for a long-term goal –especially retirement – you will likely need to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks and stock-based mutual funds. The value of these investments will fluctuate, so, if it’s possible, you’ll want to avoid selling them when their price is down – which may make them unsuitable for short-term goals. But if you’re aiming for a goal that you want to achieve in a year or so – a wedding, a long vacation, and so on – you’ll want to be sure a specific amount of money is there for you when you need it. Consequently, you’ll want to put away cash for this type of goal, possibly in a short-term savings or investment vehicle that might pay somewhat higher interest than a regular checking/savings account.

• Source of investment – In regard to your longer-term investment strategy, cash can play two important roles. First, it can serve as its own asset class, alongside other classes, such as stocks and fixed-income vehicles. Unlike these other classes – especially stocks and stock-based mutual funds – cash won’t fluctuate in value, so it can potentially help lessen the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. And second, having the cash available in your portfolio gives you the opportunity to quickly take advantage of other investment opportunities that may occur. And you may be able to use your existing investments to help replenish the cash in your portfolio. For example, if you choose to take stock dividends in cash, these dividends can be “swept” into your brokerage account and held there until you’re ready to invest them. (However, depending on your comprehensive financial strategy, it may be a good move to simply reinvest the dividends into the same stocks or stock funds.) Keep in mind that you won’t want your investment accounts to contain too much cash, as its purchasing power can erode due to inflation. By managing your cash efficiently, and putting it to work in different ways, you can gain some key benefits – and you’ll help yourself to keep moving toward your short- and long-term goals.

Weeds. Spring is upon us and if you are like me, you are enjoying the songs of the birds, the beautiful sunrises, and the warmth of the sun. But, we cannot forget our long-forgotten friends, THE WEEDS! ey’ve already begun to peek their gnarly little faces out of the cracks in the driveway and sidewalks. And don’t forget about those sunshine-looking villains known as dandelions and the deceiving pretty purple flowers of the infamous GOAT HEADS! I’m sure you’ve tried natural weed killers or the ones from the big box stores to do your own weed elimination. It’s time consuming, back breaking and a little heart breaking. To follow up, we spread fertilizer and still the weeds persist.

So how do we get MORE OF THE GOOD? I don’t have a green thumb, but being in healthcare and taking care of people over the years is a lot like taking care of our yards. I notice that people want to attack the invaders instead of nourishing the soil. We get sick and want a drug or injection to kill it. When in reality, what we really need is to add MORE OF THE GOOD. When we add good before the invasion, the health invaders don’t hang around.

e health of our soil is like the health of our gut. If you have a bad gut, you are going to get bad things growing in your gut, just like weeds in our yards. Proper nourishment allows for proper balance of nutrients and pH levels which result in improved health. Most people’s digestion is shut down by overuse of antacids and a poor diet. Similarly, we abuse our yards with frequent mowing, too much or too little water, and overuse from pets and kids. Planting seeds and then nourishing them is even spoken of in the Bible. It doesn’t say, wait until bad things occur and then nourish.

Nourishing is an everyday event from the start. If your health or yard has suffered for a long time, it will take time to restore it. Be patient and enlist the help of professionals as needed. Call me if I can help you with your health (not your yard) 303-993-6092!

The Way of Cleanliness

Oneof our young karate students grumbles “Am I getting paid for this?”, while another one exclaims happily “ is is Fun!” as everyone, including all instructors, grab a rag out of the water bucket. e students line up against the wall, put their rags on the floor, both hands on top of the rags then race down the dojo floor creating wavy wet streaks. Rinse and repeat from the opposite side. To the casual observer this could seem like Sensei is taking on some free janitorial services… but there’s more than what meets the eye.

In Japan, at the end of the school day, the children grab their rags and brooms and clean up their classrooms, halls, and bathrooms. It is called “Soji” , or Soji-Do (the way of cleanliness). It is taught and practiced to develop humility, responsibility, respect, and courtesy.

In Karate the word we use to bow is “Rei” which translates to “Courtesy” or “Respect”. Courtesy means that we care about others, how we make them feel, and how our actions may affect them in a positive way.

So I asked our Karate students: “When you leave a dirty plate in the sink, who cleans it?” Some students said: “I do…” but the parents in the background shook their heads in disagreement. So I asked, “doesn’t mom get to do it?” e kids nodded. en, I continued, “If you go to a restaurant and leave a mess at the table, who cleans it?” ey replied, “the people that work there..?” I said, “Correct. But is it nice to give mom more work? Is it nice for us to make other people work more? Even if it’s their job?. Courtesy is to think about mom when you wash your plate, when you put your toys away, when you wipe down the table after dinner. Courtesy is to leave the space you used clean, and things in their place, and you will be better for it too.”

Soji then is not only about cleaning, but about showing respect, about taking responsibility, learning humility, and achieving personal growth. And just like our students, I hope you will embrace Soji too, everywhere you go.

What Will This Summer Bring?

Summer brings with it all kinds of thinking. Where to vacation, what home projects to tackle, when to retire, etc. If you’re thinking about retirement, here are some nuggets to remember when it comes to Medicare.

Medicare is for folks who are 65 or older, have been on Social Security Disability for 2 years, or anyone who has End Stage Renal Disease or ALS.

A lot of people will continue to work beyond the age of 65. If that is you, and you have been on an Employer Group Health Plan (EGHP) but are considering retiring, there are some things you will need to know to be prepared for the Medicare Application Process.

First, you will need a form signed by your employer to show that you have had creditable coverage since turning 65. is form is the CMS Form L564. You can search this form online and download it. Your employer will need to complete this form for you AND your spouse/significant other if you are also covering that person on your EGHP.

If you haven’t started Medicare at all, you can go to SSA.gov and use the “Apply” section to enroll in Medicare. You can sign up for your SSA Income benefits at the same time or you can do them separately. You will need an account on SSA.gov to use the online application. After you do this online form, you will need to get SSA the Form L564 that your employer completed either via fax or mail.

If you already have Part A, you can do a “Medicare Part B only” application either on paper or on the SSA.gov website. With the Part B online application, you can attach the signed Form L564 to this application.

If you are not comfortable with an online application, you can schedule a phone appointment with SSA. You will need to call to schedule the appointment. e appointment might be 4-6 weeks out so please leave enough time before you retire to get this appointment completed. I recommend calling three months before you retire.

Why Didn’t My Will Work?

Have you ever heard of a situation where someone left a Will dividing their estate equally among their children but one of the children ended up with most of the assets?

How did it happen? Your Will said to divide the assets equally. Unfortunately, your Will only governs the assets that it captures. Assets that are in joint ownership, or have a payable on death or beneficiary designation payable to someone other than the deceased’s estate, bypass the instructions in your Will. Many people assume they know how their accounts are titled and who they have designated as beneficiaries. Quite often they are mistaken, and the family is shocked after death to learn that the assets are not being divided as planned. Then the fight breaks out over what you actually intended to do!

Some make a child co-owner or beneficiary because they are the executor named under their Will, but when they do, that child is entitled to keep the assets. And they usually do! Even if they trusted them to divide them among the rest of their children.

The problem also arises if you have minor children. Young parents often put a Will in place which creates a trust to take care of their minor children until they become adults. They then name their children as the beneficiaries of their accounts and life insurance should they both die. Upon death, the Court must appoint a Conservator for the children because the assets bypassed the trust created under their Will and went directly to the children who are too young to legally own the assets.

Ask yourself, “Are my assets titled correctly so my estate planning instructions will control where the assets end up?”

May is Stroke awareness month, here is a quick list of signs and symptoms to be on the lookout for, that might indicate that you should act immediately:

1. Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, often in the face, arm or leg.

2. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech.

3. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

4. Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, or trouble walking.

5. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

If someone is experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to act quickly and seek emergency services. Every second counts and can prevent or limit long-term damage to the brain and improve chances for successful recovery.

Medicare coverage, with additional insurance, will limit what you would pay for an ER care visit. An Ounce of Prevention…

Asa child I remember hearing many idioms and proverbs from my grandparents and others who were older and wiser than me. Some were easy to interpret and the meaning was simple to figure out, while others were difficult to understand without context. Much like the parables and proverbs of the Old Testament and New Testament, comparison to common things simplifies complex ideas, making them memorable and understandable.

One saying that took me a long time to figure out was “A stitch in time saves nine.” I was embarrassed to ask anyone what it meant and figured that it somehow related to the book A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. After reading the book in elementary school I was left perplexed as it did nothing to help me understand the saying. en one day, a string started to come off part of my shirt. As I pulled on it, the hem started to unravel and I could do nothing to stop it. As a result, I became familiar with thread, sewing and stitches. I later learned that an able tailor or seamstress could easily fi x a fraying hem with a simple stitch if performed immediately, whereas fi xing a hem after it was unraveled would require significantly more time and energy. us, “a stitch in time saves nine.”

Another such saying that I have seen play out in many different ways is “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” is applies to multiple areas in hearing healthcare. Wearing hearing protection prevents noise induced hearing loss. Treating hearing loss prevents atrophy of the auditory system, which preserves the ability to distinguish speech cues and hear in noise. Also, treating even mild hearing loss decreases the rate of brain shrinkage, cognitive decline, and the likelihood of developing dementia. When we consider the costs related to these things, we find hearing protection is much less expensive than hearing aids, which are much less expensive than the cost of memory care for dementia patients.

Children and Mass Violence

Afterany act of mass violence, it’s common to feel shaken and to struggle to know how to help your children. Following are some tips for helping your children manage their distress.

Talk to your children. Let them ask questions and tailor your information to their chronological and/or developmental age.

Acknowledge fears or concerns they have. Remind them that the adults in their lives will do everything possible to keep them safe.

Keep home a safe place. Monitor adult conversations. Limit their exposure to media. Make time for consistent family activities.

Check in often and monitor for signs of fear or stress. Trouble sleeping, difficulty with concentration, changes in appetite, and changes in mood may occur. is is not uncommon and will typically dissipate over one to two months if no other traumatic events occur. Encourage them to express their feelings in words, art, storytelling, etc. “Red flags” that could indicate a need for more specialized intervention include significant separation anxiety, nightmares/issues sleeping, anger/irritability, risky behavior such as alcohol/drug use or careless driving, and self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

Maintain optimism as appropriate. Talk about heroic efforts of law enforcement/first responders. For older children, talk about ways to affect positive change through school, etc. or even through policy change.

Take care of yourself so you can take care of your children. Model how to manage traumatic events.

Help is available. Reach out to your children’s primary care provider or to any mental health professional if needed.

Healing the Family Lineage

Our ancestors have powerful influence in our lives, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. Ancestry, our family lineage, effects our lives in many ways: the color of our eyes and skin, the way we walk, those inborn talents that manifest with little or no background or life exposure, our religion and belief systems. ese can all be influences that have flowed through your ancestors to you, today.

Many unwanted energies and emotions can also be brought forward, generation after generation. Looking at human history, there is much trauma. A person might experience unreasonable fear, anger and sorrow that does not belong to you, it may belong to your great great great Grandmother. Physical illness and recurring injury in multiple members of a family can be the result of something unresolved that your great grandfather did - you’ve heard of family curses? ere are energies that flow through a family generation after generation, both helpful and crippling. We can seek resolution and healing, we can bring understanding and compassion, we can ask for blessings and gifts to be brought forward to empower our future with the strengths of our ancestors.

You have access to healing for yourself, AND your ancestors. Resolving old built up karma clears the way for future generations to live more powerfully, free from the remnants of pain and transgression of those who have gone before. Your ancestors want to tell their story, and they want to heal. Help them. Empower yourself and future generations.

Traditionally, in May and mid-October through mid-November, the veil between the realms of the living and the dead thins. is liminal space, this threshold, is more easily crossed during these times. Take advantage of this special time, and bring healing and completion.

Sunscreen

Excited for summer? It is important to buy sunscreen, a vital tool in protecting skin from harmful UV rays that can lead to skin cancer, premature aging, and other skin-related issues.

Choosing the right sunscreen can be overwhelming, but there are a few key factors to consider. Make sure to select a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30. It’s important to apply sunscreen correctly to ensure maximum protection. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin, and don’t forget to apply to often-missed areas such as the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet.

Sunscreen should be used year-round, not just during the summer months. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds and cause skin damage. erefore, wearing sunscreen should be a daily skincare routine, regardless of the weather. e Skin Cancer Foundation recommends waiting until the baby is 6 months old before introducing sunscreen.

erefore, keeping younger babies out of direct light when possible, and putting them in protective clothing, such as hats and long-sleeved shirts, can help shield their skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Seeking shade during peak sun hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm, can also help reduce exposure to UV rays. By taking these steps, you and your child can enjoy the outdoors safely while protecting your skin’s health. Have a safe, fun summer!
