s in many May issues of the past, we’ve mentioned the number of occasions the month has to celebrate. This year is no exception.

Let’s start with Mother’s day on the 8th.

What a perfect day to thank your Mother, Grandmother, or Wife for the many things they do all year to make your family life special. Do let them know how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness. Our local markets will be bursting with beautiful flowers, hanging baskets, vegetables to plant in gardens, statuary and yard art to create your 2022 outdoor sanctuary. Another huge reason to celebrate is the opening of Brighton’s Oasis Water Park and planning for Summerfest, the first week in June. Both events bring the City of Brighton alive with fun and festivity as the Summer Season begins.

Toward the end of the month, many families celebrate graduations and look toward the next stage of education for their children. For those not yet graduating, summer vacation is on its way, and there are activities to explore in May’s issue for them.

y entire life I have had seasonal allergies, some in the spring but mostly in the fall. Every autumn as the trees turned colors and the beautiful shades of orange and yellow emerged, so did the horrid sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes begin. For me, it took a very hard snow to end the cycle of Kleenex grabbing. Even a light snow would not do it, until the ground was frozen solid, my allergies persisted.

Then, I met Dr. Anderson. I met him in the winter of 2012 so the following fall when it all began again, he suggested I try supplements. I was skeptical. I wanted the fast acting, caffeine induced fix that my over-the-counter stuff would give me. Besides, it was what I was used to. Nothing works permanently, right?

Or we would all know about it, wouldn’t we?

Well, I am a fan of alternatives that don’t have side effects and decided to give it a try. He had me take two different supplements 3x a day. Which I also was not used to. That season went on and I battled the daily sneezing, watery eyes, and red nose, but it seemed better.

It was the next spring, and especially fall, that I discovered a miracle had occurred! Autumn arrived and my seasonal allergies did not! I was not miserable, I was not single handedly supporting the tissue industry. I didn’t have horrid fall allergies that year.

That was 9 years ago. To this day, I only have light or no allergies at all. I continue to marvel over this when I think of how bad my fall life used to be. I continue to take much smaller doses as needed of the supplements he suggested.

Right now, our beautiful Colorado springtime is full of blossoming plants, trees and grasses with aggressive pollens that attack our immune systems. There is help!

S

ome might say we are in the midst of navigating some unchartered waters on the current real estate horizon. While some patterns are certainly recognizable, even as recent as those which played out this time last year, there isn’t any denying that the current housing landscape in our area was dealt a couple of pretty big wild cards over the past two years with the huge loss of homes in Boulder County on top of the pandemic and resulting supply and labor shortages, inflation, rising interest rates, and ever-increasing demand for housing. According to Realtor.com and economic experts, it’s a mixed bag, but not without some positive indications as we look forward.

Yes, the construction backlog continued to grow during the first quarter of 2022, but so were there increases in housing projects under construction, up 2.3% nationwide from the previous month, and 24% over this time last year (Realtor.com). Granted, some of that was housing projects with five or more units, but that isn’t surprising considering the crushing need for more affordable housing options.

The current landscape leaves home builders at a juncture of tough choice based on varied factors—huge demand versus supply chain and labor shortages, mortgage rates that are the highest they’ve been in over a decade, and which seem poised to continue to rise. It’s not surprising there is hesitation by builders about overcommitting themselves considering the lingering memories of the Great Depression and so much geo-political instability impacting the global financial markets. That said though, the continued drive and demand for more housing starts and market ready inventory is a powerful force, hopefully powerful enough to eventually find at least a little balance and calmer waters. One thing is for sure, it’s still a good time to sell, and with the right strategy, maximize the opportunity.

o achieve most goals in life, you need some type of strategy. And that’s certainly true for your financial goals. Since you likely have multiple financial goals, you may need to pursue several different strategies – but they all should follow a similar process.

What does this process entail?

Here are the basic steps: • Fully define each goal.

Like most people, you probably have a goal of someday enjoying a comfortable retirement. But have you defined what “comfortable retirement” means to you? Do you plan to spend your retirement years traveling the world, or would you rather stay close to home to be with family members? Would you like to pursue your hobbies? Open a small business? Think carefully about what this goal looks like.

• Identify the costs. Once you’ve identified a retirement vision, you need to put a price tag on it. How much income will you require? You don’t have to identify a figure down to the penny, but you should be able to come up with a pretty good estimate. A surprising number of people never reach this point – more than three-fourths of pre-retirees haven’t calculated how much they’ll need once they retire, according to Four Pillars of the New Retirement, a study by Age Wave and Edward Jones.

• Invest appropriately for each goal. Your investment strategy should reflect your risk tolerance and your goals. So, for example, when you’re working toward a long-term goal, such as retirement, you’re essentially investing for growth, which means you’ll accept the level of risk that always accompanies a growth strategy. Each of your goals may have its own investment strategy, but you still need to look at your goals holistically. hen I get old, I want to be like Grandma”, said one of my daughters as we sat chatting around the dinner table. My daughters were (and still are) amazed at my mother’s vitality and active lifestyle.

You see, she had her 74th birthday just two months ago.

She is a second degree Karate Black Belt who trains consistently, plays tennis every week, rides her bicycle and as you could also guess, is always cheerful and upbeat.

As I listened to my daughter, I thought about so many people who instead, lose their vitality way too early in life. They are more likely to yell at the kids to stop making noise than to go play with them. I understand that, like myself, many parents sacrifice a great deal for our children’s well being. Sleepless nights, long hours at work, stressful situations, you name it. And in the hustle of it all, we forget to take care of ourselves.

I never have any “me” time, some folks tell me. Our eating habits deteriorate to snacking or grabbing something from the fast food joint. And our exercise routine boils down to walking around Walmart twice a week.

While it is wonderful to provide well for our families, we must realize that staying healthy will mean more meaningful time with them for years to come. YES, you must tell yourself that it is OK to schedule some “me” time. Take care of yourself; both, for your own good, and for your family and friends to fully enjoy your company.

But there’s more, it is widely believed that vigorous exercise produces the release of endorphins which boost your mood and lower your stress level; making you feel more positive, and energetic. So not only will you be around longer, but people will actually enjoy being around you more!

So take care of yourself, not tomorrow, not next week, not next year, start today.

You can do it either on your own, or with the help of a coach. There is plenty of information on the web about proper nutrition and exercise. Even better, you have resources here in town, like healthy food stores, gyms and of course our Karate School who can help you get into the exercise habit, while having a great time.

he day we met, you’d think we were there for a celebrity as the cars were lined up around a corner on Riverdale Road. You literally run to the top of a hill to get to the destination since it is “First come, first serve.” When we made it to the top, there he was – a rescue puppy from Northern New Mexico with one brown eye and one blue eye at Lifeline Puppy Rescue.

Over the next 14 years, he became known as my “Wrigs”, Wrigley Field Rippy, and held the position of my companion and best friend. When I first got him, I was telecommuting and working from home. We would go on three walks a day, just like clockwork; morning, lunchtime and after work. If I was running a few minutes late on a break, he would bring my tennis shoes to me and let me know it was time to go and stare at me until we went.

We took camping trips in the mountains and stayed at several lakes all over Colorado. We went snowshoeing at St. Mary’s Glacier and hiked all over the state in all four seasons. We took road trips through New Mexico and Arizona.

He loved cold weather and sticking his head out the window, no matter what the temperature was. He chased rabbits and frogs and loved to camp and go into ponds. His favorite thing to do was walk and just be by my side.

Together we made it through some of the hardest days. He had torn his Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) in one knee requiring surgery, and tore the other knee in the months that followed, requiring another surgery. After I lost my dad, I found it difficult to go outside, let alone walk, because I couldn’t stop crying. Wrigley kept me moving forward on the days I didn’t think I could move. On April 12th, 2022, he let me know that he couldn’t move forward anymore and I had to say goodbye to my best friend on one of the hardest days of my life. ADOPT a pet. Often it is worthwhile to re-shop to check for premium savings every couple of years if you do not have a chronic condition.

Advantage Plans replace your Part A and B benefits by providing them as part of the Plan chosen for a low or $0 premium. This type of coverage has a network of providers and can offer additional benefits beyond original Medicare like dental and vision. Plans are specific to your home zip code and county. Some plans are designed to offer extra support for low-income individuals or those that would benefit from coordinated care because of a chronic condition. Advantage plans have many enrollment periods, many people qualify for changes outside of the annual enrollment from October 15 to December 7.

he pandemic caused many people to work from home, and some companies do not plan to return to office-based work until this summer, if ever. While you may view this as a mixed blessing, you can capitalize on the situation to save money for your short- and long-term goals.

Your savings might not stem from tax breaks, but rather from other financial benefits. You won’t be spending money on commuting, restaurant lunches, afterwork happy hours, etc. Now is a great time to update your budget and financial plans accordingly.

You might be surprised at how much you’ll save. USA Today reports that remote workers can save about $4,000 a year by working from home.1 Other sources put the annual savings as high as $7,000.2 No offense to Starbucks, but just cutting out daily $6 lattes can make a big difference. You can also save money by not spending on a professional wardrobe, fancy lunches, and drinks after work.

Think of the money you’ll save on gasoline (and/or public transportation). You can measurably improve your finances if you apply the $4,000 to $7,000 savings to high-priority items.

Cutting back on child care costs can make a big difference. Although it might not be possible for you to work with children at home, with a little flexibility and creativity you may be able to cut down the time they need to spend in daycare.

Consider taking the money that would have been spent on child care and funnel it into your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), or you could increase your 401k contributions to the maximum allowed, which is $19,500 in 2021, thereby ensuring you receive every cent of employer matching funds.

Attack short-term needs first. Consider your immediate priorities. The first should be to establish an emergency fund with at least six months of expenses set aside. You may never use it, but you’ll thank yourself every day for the peace of mind it brings. Another consideration is insurance, both life and health. Setting up your life insurance plans involves a clear-eyed look at how much your family would need if you were no longer able to provide income. Also consider health savings plans and perhaps a better-quality health insurance policy.

You can really improve your investment plans. Saving for retirement is important at any age, and the sooner you start, the more beneficial it becomes. Lest you think it selfish to sock away retirement contributions rather than spending the savings on your kids, remember that you don’t want them to have to support you in your later years. However, your kids will directly benefit by your contributions to a 529 education plan. Perhaps some family life events, like a bigger home, confirmations or bar mitzvahs, weddings, etc., will require long-term savings as well.

Don’t fritter away a golden opportunity. Establishing a budget if you don’t already have one and tracking your spending closely will let you quantify how much you’re saving by working from home. Infants:

Before 12 months of age, your baby should be breastfeeding or drinking iron-fortified infant formula. This is because cow’s milk does not provide enough of certain appropriate nutrients.

Children:

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children consume no more than 2-3 cups of milk per day. Whole milk is recommended after your child turns 1 year old since the fats help with brain development. Transitioning to a lower fat milk is recommended after the age of 2, since children this age and up need less milk in their diet. Too much milk in the diet can fill them up, leaving them not feeling hungry enough to eat a variety of solid foods, and can cause constipation and iron-deficiency anemia.

Milk Alternatives:

Many children are either allergic to milk protein or have trouble digesting the sugar in cow’s milk. Others avoid it due to taste. The nutritional content in dairy alternatives is important to keep in mind. An appropriate milk alternative is a good source that consists of fat, protein, calcium and Vitamin D - all needed for growth and development. Soy milk fortified with calcium carbonate and Vitamin D is the best milk alternative for children. If you prefer not to give soy, pea milk would be the next best alternative. Almond, oat, coconut, and rice milk are not good substitutions for cow’s milk.

ith warmer days approaching, families will be spending more time around water. Drowning and near-drowning are leading causes of injury-related death and emergency room visits, with risks highest in children under the age of 4 and adolescent males. In children under the age of 4, unsupervised, unexpected access to water is the major factor in these preventable accidents.

While pools, and large bodies of water carry risks, drowning is possible in small amounts of standing water, including in buckets, toilets, etc. Water safety has many components, including but not limited to the ability to swim. Whenever possible, children should be introduced to the water at a young age. Lessons can benefit children as young as 1, but a healthy respect for water safety is just as important. An adult should always be in the water and within arms reach of a child who is unable to swim. Judicious use of life jackets should be encouraged, especially in large bodies of water, even for proficient swimmers.

It is important, however, to ensure that life jackets do not provide a false sense of security for individuals who do not know how to swim. Barriers around swimming pools should be secured when pools are not in use.

Children should be taught to stay away from water without a responsible adult present, and nobody should be in the water without someone outside of the water whose job it is to lifeguard. Learn CPR. Have a fun and safe summer.

i, I’m Emily – a Brighton resident, mom of two young boys and married to a firefighter. I’m also a paramedic. As an EMT and Paramedic for 21+ years, I have bared witness to it all… from brining babies into the world, to holding the hand of a person taking their last breath. My work as a paramedic fluctuates from intensely scientific to deeply spiritual. It is through this work that I have become sensitive to the movement and flow of energy.

My experience around compartmentalizing my emotions from my job clued me in to what blocked energy does to the body. I was witnessing and helping people in so many heart-breaking situations, meanwhile I had to keep it together. Well, let me tell you, that takes a toll. Emotion is energy in motion.

And when you don’t allow these emotions to process they result in physical manifestations of poor health. I began to experience headaches, stomach aches, difficulty sleeping, weight gain.…. one day I started crying after witnessing yet another young person taken too early. And I couldn’t stop crying, the grief over a complete strangers’ death shrouded me like a veil for days. A friend advised me to see a Reiki healer. I didn’t know anything about Reiki, and I was skeptical at first. But the session helped me to relax, and afterwards I felt lighter – like a release had happened. This session was so meaningful that I began to study Reiki. I am now a Reiki Master and have studied both Usui Tibetan Reiki and Sacred Nature Connection Work. I am excited to offer this in Brighton.

Many people find Reiki to be a great tune-up after a moderately stressful week at work, not dissimilar to getting a massage. It can also be a very calming and relaxing way to start the week.

I take a very scientific approach to this work, and you can expect a session that is restful, relaxing, and meditative. uring the past year our youngest son started gymnastic classes. He was extremely excited when he “leveled up” and was able to move on to a more advanced class and learn more difficult exercises. He has been excited to try most of the exercises, but hesitant to attempt others. Over the past few weeks, he finally started to attempt one particular exercise, and during the most recent class, finally executed it with the assistance of a coach. However, he has not been able to complete the exercise by himself. While trying to help him get over his fear of attempting the exercise on his own, my wife asked him what he thought was holding him back. He replied seriously and innocently, “gravity.”

This incident reminded me of something I learned recently in a continuing education course. We discussed many of the reasons people choose not to get help with hearing loss, or what “holds people back” from getting help. It turns out that only about 20% of people with hearing loss get help, and the typical individual will wait 5 years to get checked from the time they first notice a problem with their hearing. Then, once a person has been diagnosed with hearing loss and given a recommendation for hearing aids, they will usually wait an average of 7 to 10 years to get hearing aids. That is a typical wait of 12 to 15 years to get help!

The biggest problem with waiting so long is the negative changes that occur to the brain in that time. The longer a person waits, the more their ability to understand words or discriminate speech decrease and their ability to understand in noise diminishes. These changes are almost always

permanent, but could potentially have been prevented if the person had gotten hearing aids when they first started to have problems with their hearing.

So why do people wait so long? Some people immediately think it is the price of hearing aids. However, many people who can easily afford devices still choose not to get them. Generally, it comes down to some form of embarrassment, vanity, or not wanting to deal with the perceived hassle of wearing hearing aids.

My goal is to help people understand how important it is to hear and communicate with one another, and provide a way to overcome the barriers hearing loss creates. One of the greatest reasons to get help with hearing loss is the fact that we as humans are social creatures. We all have different strengths, weaknesses and abilities. We need each other to thrive individually.

Rarely do individuals survive in isolation, and almost no one thrives alone. Hearing loss is a barrier to communication and separates and isolates people even when they are in the same room or live under the same roof. Treating hearing loss benefits not only the person with the hearing loss, it also benefits those with whom they communicate.

No matter where you are with your hearing, we recommend you have your hearing checked. If you have normal hearing, having a baseline test helps track changes over time. If you have a hearing loss, no matter how long you have had it, treating it now will bring greater results than treating it later. We would like to help you “get over” whatever obstacle is “holding you back” from experiencing the benefits of treating hearing loss. And who knows? It might just require removing some earwax!

better reflect the totality of the communities it serves, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Innovative Real Estate is changing has changed its name to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colorado Real Estate.
