The Quirky Dance of Luck

time of year when everyone becomes Irish, leprechauns dance through the streets, and pots of gold are rumored to be hidden at the end of every rainbow. It’s a day filled with greenery, laughter, and a healthy dose of luck – or so we’d like to believe!

In the grand tapestry of life, luck is the mischievous sprite that often catches us off guard, leading us on a whimsical dance through unexpected twists and turns. Whether you’re finding a dollar bill on the street or narrowly avoiding a sudden rainstorm, luck has a way of making the ordinary extraordinary.

Luck has a knack for making appearances in the most unexpected places. Ever stumbled upon a lost item just when you were about to give up hope? That’s luck, giving you a little wink and a nudge to remind you that sometimes, things have a way of falling into place when you least expect it. It’s about embracing the unpredictable, finding joy in the little surprises, and recognizing that sometimes, life’s most delightful moments are the result of an impromptu dance we call luck. So, the next time you find yourself in a fortunate situation, raise a toast to luck and let the dance continue!

Post-pandemic Design Trends

O ered by:

Spring is in the air and that often means renovation projects. It’s always tempting to chase after the trend of the moment, but it’s important to consider your potential ROI and the “shelf-life” and functionality of the design when planning any major changes to your home.

e pandemic forced several major trends in home use. Some have gone by the wayside as we’ve been able to get out and mingle again, especially home gyms. But other home adaptations appear to be here to stay.

Home office: Many people are still working remotely, either full or parttime, and advancements in technology-driven jobs are only getting better so the home office isn’t going away.

Flex space: Over the past year mid-market home size has been trending downward an average of 10% for affordability so being able to do more with less space is critical. ink a “pocket office” that can be closed off with a barn-style door or room divider, or a murphy bed so that extra room can be an office that easily converts to a guest room when needed.

Biophilic design: During Covid, merging inside and outside became necessary to avoid feeling caged. is trend is only growing in popularity as homeowners blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. ink glass sliding/retractable doors, larger windows, phantom screens and window shades to bring in more natural light, and stone, both natural and faux, and “living walls” for interior design elements. What used to be “just a deck or a patio” is now intentional space designed to maximize entertaining and relaxing. ink scenic pergolas and covered patios with living room style comfort.

It’s Time to Re-Focus

Little Jimmy is a very energetic 6 year old in our beginner Karate class, always smiling, great attitude, and very kind kid. He’s always happy to be in class and I love having him there training. However, poor Jimmy gets distracted so easily. I don’t know if he’s daydreaming, or if his attention is simply overtaken by something else around him. e student next to him, the lights on the ceiling, the mirror, how one side of the belt is longer than the other, etc. etc.

People often wonder why some children are unable to focus, they have so much energy, but it seems like it goes everywhere and nowhere. I think that we could look at ourselves for the answer. Some time ago some great minds came up with the idea of multitasking, you hire one employee that can do the work of three at the same time! Brilliant, we thought, and we all bought into it. I remember having “ability to multitask” written on my resume.

e fact is that not only did the quality of our work decrease, but also we lost our ability to focus solely on a single task. We thought we could do many things at once, but instead, our attention span took a huge dive. Even now, sometimes I find myself working on one thing, only to get derailed by a phone alert, a knock at the door, or even a passing thought about something I forgot to do yesterday. Twenty minutes later, I forgot what I was doing to begin with.

When I asked my karate class if they sometimes get distracted, many of them shook their heads and said, ‘no’, as if getting distracted was a terrible thing. But a couple of them said ‘yes’, and I agreed and told them that we all get distracted, it is normal. Let’s say we’re doing some high kicks and the student next to you slips and drops to the ground with a loud noise. Of course it will be distracting to your training, but after helping him up and making sure he’s okay, what we need to do is RE-FOCUS. Distractions are going to happen, guaranteed, but if we are aware of them, we have the ability to say, “don’t get distracted, it’s time to refocus”. When we do that repeatedly, it will become a habit, and our ability to focus will increase exponentially.

As for Jimmy, he still gets distracted here and there, but he’s starting to learn to refocus. His dad told me recently that his teacher at school noticed great improvement in the quality of his work, and his attention in class has gotten better. He’s even helping other students to be more focused. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but I’d like to think that we are laying the foundations, one student at a time, one day at a time.

Do any of these sound familiar?

• Aches and pains slowing you down?

• Frustrated you can’t play with your kids or grandkids?

• Tired of your doctor telling you your aches and pains are normal for your age?

Have you ever heard someone mention their slipped disc, ruptured disc, or herniated disc? If you’ve experienced back or neck pain, sciatica, leg or arm pain, shooting sensations, numbness, tingling, or weakness, a spinal disc issue could be the culprit.

So, what exactly is a disc herniation? To understand this, let’s review some basic disc anatomy. Spinal discs sit between the vertebrae (bones of the spine), providing shock absorption and facilitating spine mobility. ese discs span from the second bone in your neck to the lowest bone in your lower back. Visualize the discs as jelly donuts: a soft, gel-like interior surrounded by a tough outer layer made of ligaments, which helps contain the softer material. However, abnormal forces, repetitive stress, or trauma can cause tears or weaknesses in these ligaments, leading to disc issues. In some cases, excessive swelling or bone degeneration can result in stenosis, narrowing spaces that may pinch nerves or compress the spinal cord.

e three most common disc issues are disc bulge, protrusion, and extrusion. A bulge occurs when the softer material pushes against the ligament without tears. In a protrusion, part of the softer material intrudes into torn ligament fibers and may extend beyond them. An extrusion happens when the softer material extends past the torn ligament, sticking out even further. e symptoms experienced depend on the disc’s location and affected level, potentially impacting the spinal cord and/or nerves.

Chiropractic adjustments can positively influence these disc issues, yet severe pain or symptoms may necessitate surgical intervention. However, non-surgical spinal decompression, an alternative option available for over two decades, may offer relief. True decompression creates a vacuum within the disc, aiding in pulling back the material instead of resorting to surgical removal or mere traction.

It’s crucial for individuals to be aware of available options. If you have questions or seek answers, we’re here to assist. Reach out to us at 303-993-6092.

Feeling like you paid too much in taxes this year?

A financial advisor could help you find a tax-advantaged investment strategy for you.

It’salmost that time of year when many people start receiving their tax refunds. If you get one, what will you do with it?Of course, the answer will depend somewhat on how big your refund is. Last year, the average refund amount was about $2,750, according to the Internal Revenue Service’s Filing Season Statistics report.Whatever the size of your refund, you’ll want to maximize its benefit. Here are a few suggestions:

• Contribute to your IRA. If you were to receive about $2,750, it would go a long way toward funding your IRA for the year — but any amount would help. You still have until April 15 to contribute to your IRA for the 2023 tax year, but if you’ve already “maxed out” on it, you could use your refund for 2024, when the annual contribution limit for a traditional and Roth IRA is $7,000, or $8,000 if you’re 50 or older. And by getting an early start toward fully funding your IRA for the year, you can reduce the pressure of having to come up with large amounts later.

• Build an emergency fund. Your tax refund could help you start or expand an emergency fund. It’s a good idea to keep up to six months’ worth of living expenses in such a fund, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account, separate from the funds you use for your daily expenses. You might need to draw on this fund for unexpected expenses, such as a major home or car repair or a medical bill that’s not fully covered by your insurance. Without such an emergency fund in place, you might be forced to dip into your IRA or other retirement accounts to pay for these types of costs, and such a move could be expensive, resulting in taxes, penalties and lost opportunities for growth.

• Contribute to a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren and you’d like to help them further their education someday, you might consider investing in a 529 education savings plan. With a 529 plan, earnings and withdrawals are federally tax free, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. Based on where you live, your 529 plan may provide state tax benefits, too. (It is possible, though, that 529 withdrawals could affect financial aid packages, depending on who owns the account.) A 529 plan can be used to help pay for college, accredited trade school programs, some K-12 expenses and even to help repay some student loans.

• Pay down debts. Most of us probably wish we could reduce our debt loads. Your tax refund may give you a chance to do just that. But which debts should you tackle first? You could follow the “snowball” method by paying off the smallest of your loans or debts as quickly as possible. Or you could choose the “avalanche” route by making minimum payments on all debts and using extra funds — such as your tax refund — to pay off the debts that carry the highest interest rates. Either method could help you save money in the long term.

Your tax refund can be a valuable asset — so use it wisely.

Some Thoughts on Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can occur at any time, at any age.

Some people are born with it. Others lose their hearing from disease, illness, trauma, or noise exposure. For some, the stigma of hearing loss is enough for them to deny they have a problem. For others, having witnessed a family member or loved one battle with hearing problems later in life is incentive to treat their own hearing loss sooner rather than later.

When a person loses hearing, it means some part of their auditory system has been damaged. Hearing loss can be temporary or permanent. e most common temporary loss is from earwax blocking one or both ear canals. Fluid in the middle ear and trauma to the tympanic membrane, or eardrum, may cause hearing loss that lasts as long as the fluid is present or until the eardrum heals. Permanent hearing loss can occur when the trauma to the eardrum does not heal, long term infection damages the middle ear bones, or the hairs in the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve become damaged. Damage to the auditory processing portion of the brain from an aneurysm, dementia, stroke, or traumatic brain injury can also cause hearing loss.

lead to strained relationships.

Because permanent hearing loss usually occurs due to permanent damage to part of the auditory system, wearing hearing aids does not make the hearing perfect. Without hearing aids, some things may be impossible to hear. With the help of hearing aids, many more sounds and words will be audible and understandable, but hearing will not be perfect. Individuals with hearing loss may need more time to process what is said, so slowing down when speaking will help. Individuals who get help with hearing loss sooner rather than later benefit more from hearing aids.

Preventing hearing loss is always better than treating it. Avoiding loud noises, wearing hearing protection, and not putting objects in the ear, along with living a healthy lifestyle, all decrease the likelihood of having hearing loss. If you decided to ignore all the professional advice you have ever heard to not use cotton swabs in your ears, make sure you only use them on the outermost part of the ear canal to avoid pushing the wax further back in the canal or damaging the eardrum.

Sometimes a person with hearing loss will respond to questions or comments by saying something that does not make sense or is humorous. Most of the time, a person who mishears will respond appropriately to what they thought they heard, but not to what was actually said. Lack of hearing does not mean lack of intelligence. Making fun, chastising, or belittling a person who respond incorrectly can create emotional scars and

10 Mistakes People Make When Dying

O ered by: Dolan & Associates, P.C.

(Part 2 of 3)

In this three-part series, the following are 3 of the top common mistakes people make when they die.

Focus on Taxes. Spending too much time and energy focusing on tax implications and overlooking critical family issues that arise upon and after death can cost you and your family much more than what you would have paid in tax. Saving taxes is important, but it shouldn’t be put ahead of family consideration and future harmony.

Confusion about Documents. Another common mistake is the belief that the estate planning documentation you have put in place will accomplish specific goals when it does not. You should know what documentation you have, why you have it, and what it accomplishes. Also, you should know how it works in relation to the other steps you take in an effort to have an effective estate plan.

Don’t Know What Options Are Available. Putting a plan in place without knowing what all of the options are to produce an effective plan is a common reason why estate plans fail to meet their objectives. ere is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all estate plan. You should understand what options are available to you so you can maximize the benefit to your family upon and after your death.

Don’t let your failed estate planning be the horror story people talk about when they get together for coffee. Take the steps necessary to avoid these common mistakes so that things go smoothly after you die.

Tune in to next month’s Brighton Buzz for final installment of the Top 10 Mistakes People Make When Dying, and if you have questions about these issues, you are encouraged to gain more knowledge about available estate planning options, by visiting www.EstatePlans atWork.com to sign up for a complimentary educational workshop.

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

O ered by: Headwaters Health and Wealth LLC - Lisa Asmussen

St. Patrick’s Day, originally a religious celebration of Ireland’s patron saint, has evolved into a secular holiday fi lled with revelry and Irish pride, especially in the United States. St. Patrick, born in Roman Britain, brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century and is associated with various legends, like banishing snakes and using the shamrock to explain the Trinity.

Irish immigrants, particularly in the US, transformed the holiday into a lively affair, marked by parades and festivities. Cities with significant Irish populations, such as Boston and New York City, began hosting elaborate celebrations as early as the 18th century. Chicago even dyes its river green in homage to St. Patrick.

While St. Patrick and Medicare may seem unrelated, they share symbolic parallels. Both represent care, compassion, guidance, and protection. As you approach the age of Medicare eligibility at 65, it’s essential to understand your options. If you’re curious about what Medicare means for you, feel free to reach out. I’m here to help navigate the ins and outs of Medicare, ensuring you’re wellprepared for this new chapter.

In the delightful realm of hobbies, where passions blossom and creativity thrives, it’s easy to get lost in the joy of pursuing what you love. However, when tax season comes knocking, it’s essential to understand the implications of your favorite pastimes on your income tax reporting.

While most hobbies are pursued for personal satisfaction, some individuals manage to turn their passion into a source of income. If your hobby generates income, whether through selling handmade crafts, or offering freelance services it’s crucial to recognize the tax implications.

First and foremost, the IRS considers any income earned from hobbies as taxable. Even if it’s just a side gig or a modest earning, it’s essential to report it accurately on your tax return. Keep meticulous records of your hobby-related income and expenses, including receipts for materials, equipment, and any other relevant costs.

If your hobby is more than a casual pursuit and operates with a genuine profit motive, the IRS may classify it as a business. In such cases, you may be eligible to deduct expenses related to your hobby/business, reducing your overall taxable income.

To streamline the process, consider keeping a separate bank account for your hobby-related transactions. is helps maintain clarity and makes it easier to differentiate personal and business expenses when reporting income on your tax return.

Additionally, staying informed about relevant tax laws and seeking advice from tax professionals can help you navigate the intricate landscape of hobby-related income reporting. ey can provide guidance on deductions, credits, and other tax-saving opportunities specific to your situation.

While indulging in your favorite hobbies brings immense joy, it’s crucial to be mindful of the tax implications, especially if your pastime evolves into a source of income. By maintaining accurate records, understanding the tax laws, and seeking professional advice when needed, you can ensure a smooth and compliant income tax reporting experience. Need help to determine if your hobby is a business? Give us a call at (720) 949-7733. Happy hobbying, and may your passion continue to flourish within the boundaries of tax regulations!

MEDICARE

Tuesday,

Tuesday,

Wednesday,

O ered by:

As the final month of the first quarter comes around, I thought I would offer a few reminders for those of you who are on Medicare.

e biggest reminder I’d like to offer is for those of you on a Medicare Advantage Plan. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you likely have an Over-the-Counter (OTC) benefit. is is a benefit that gives you credit each quarter to spend on OTC items – things like bandaids, toothbrushes, vitamins, shower stools, etc. ese benefits are often quarterly and unused dollars don’t roll into the following quarter.

Some companies have cards that you can use in specific retailers, others have online catalogs that you can order from, and other companies give both options.

e other reminder is also for those on Medicare Advantage plans.

e Open Enrollment Period goes from Jan 1 - Mar 31. is allows you to make a one-time plan change if you have discovered the current Medicare Advantage Plan you’re on isn’t working quite right for you. is is only for people who started January 1 on a Medicare Advantage Plan.

My final reminder is a little outside the scope of Medicare but indeed important. I have been getting quite a few questions about scams and concerns with Identity eft. Unfortunately, this is a real problem and it gets bigger every day. Because of this, I have offered Identity eft Protection as a service since 2015. If you have questions about this, please don’t hesitate to shoot me a text or give me a call.

Spring Into Maintaining A Healthy Weigh

As nice weather is approaching and we are starting to prepare for the upcoming summer months, many families are thinking about getting a healthier lifestyle. is is especially important for the pediatric population due to the rapid rise of obesity in children. Maintaining a healthy weight during childhood and adolescence promotes good growth and development into adulthood.

Healthy eating habits are a good way to start maintaining a healthy weight for your children. Start by encouraging plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat and nonfat milk/dairy products. Also eat lean meats such as fish, poultry and protein sources like lentils and beans. As a family, try to avoid sugary drinks such as soda, pops, juices, Kool-Aid, sweet tea and limit sugar and saturated fats. (CDC.gov) Instead promote plenty of water.

As a family, staying active and limiting screen time is also beneficial in maintaining a healthy weight for children. By staying active, children develop bone strength, have a decreased risk for high blood pressure, stress, and anxiety, and boost their self-esteem (CDC.gov). It is recommended that children are active at least 60 minutes per day and limit screen time (video games/tablets/phone time and TV watching) to 2 hours per day. Encourage family walks or time at the park each day with your children. In addition, getting an adequate amount of sleep helps maintain a healthy body weight for children. It is recommended that school children get at least 10-13 hours of sleep at night and teens 8-10 hours per night (CDC.gov). Enjoy the springtime with your family and working towards maintaining a healthier lifestyle of nutritional eating habits, increased activity, and plenty of sleep to promote a healthy weight for your children.

Check Fraud Is On The Rise: Protect Yourself

In 2022, banks saw an 84% increase in check fraud

Check fraud is one of the most common types of identity theft, and it has grown significantly in the past few years as trillions of dollars in COVID relief checks were mailed across the country. e Financial Crimes Enforcement Network – a division of the U.S. Treasury Department – reported that banks saw an 84% increase in check fraud in 2022 over 2021, increasing from about 350,000 reports to more than 680,000.1

e type of check fraud that has attracted the most attention during this surge has been check washing, where crooks steal checks left in mailboxes, deposited in U.S. Postal Service collection boxes, or through other means. By using cheap chemicals such as acetone (found in nail polish remover) or bleach, the crooks erase the payee’s name and the amount, keeping the signature intact. When the checks are dry and clear of the payee’s name and the amount, the crooks rewrite them with a higher amount and a fraudulent name – or they sell them to other criminals for their own fraudulent uses.

Ways to Avoid or wart Check-washing Schemes

By taking a few precautions, you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of check washing.

• Use a pen with blue or black non-erasable gel ink to write your checks. Gel ink soaks into paper and is harder to remove than ink from ballpoint pens.

• Pay your bills online using a private, secure Wi-Fi connection, instead of writing and mailing a check.

• Mail your check payments from the post office during business hours, putting them into an outgoing mail slot inside the building or handing it directly to a clerk.

• Regularly monitor your bank account online to review account balances and look at images of the checks drawn against them.

• Remove delivered mail from your mailbox as quickly as possible. Ask a friend to pick it up for you if you’re away or have the post office hold it until you return home.

Other types of fraud

Check-washing isn’t the only kind of fraud to be on the lookout for, but its ballooning numbers during the pandemic have pushed it higher in the ranks. If your mail has been stolen, you may also be at a higher risk for identity theft. Keep your eyes open for other signs that you – and your identity – may be at risk.

Here are some signs that your identity may have been stolen:2

• You receive alerts about charges you didn’t make.

• New accounts appear under your name.

• Your credit card and/or loan applications are denied.

• You receive bills for services you didn’t use, such as medical services.

• You get calls from debt collectors.

• Your credit score changes dramatically and unexpectedly.

• Mail arrives at your address and is addressed to someone who doesn’t live there.

• Unbeknownst to you, tax returns are fi led under your name.

• Your Social Security Statement contains errors.

• You learn there’s a warrant for your arrest.

• Mail or email that you’re expecting doesn’t arrive.

If you’re lucky, you won’t experience check washing or identity theft. But, it’s always a good idea to be ready in case it happens.

Feeling Lucky? - Play Sudoku!

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game. If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Start a game today and make it a part of your daily brain workout!

The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9×9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if:

• Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9

Tax Tips for Selling a Residence

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the primary residence you sold in 2023 may have federal tax benefits that can help you avoid capital gains on the sale, if you meet certain criteria for ownership and use of the home.

To claim a tax exclusion, you must have owned the home for at least two years and lived in the home for at least two out of no more than five years of ownership. e tax gain exclusion that’s available is $250,000 if you’re single, or $500,000 if you’re married and use a joint tax return. If you sell at a loss, such as a short sale, you can’t deduct the loss from your income, likely because of the many homeownership benefits subsidized by the government, including loan programs, first-time and low-income homebuyer grants, energy star appliance credits, and so on. Tax exclusions are also subsidized by the government.

To maximize your gain and lessen your tax bill, you can adjust the basis of the home you sold. e basis is the price you paid for the home, including closing costs and settlement fees. e adjusted basis, explains Smart Asset, factors in capital improvements that you made to the home, such as replacing the roof or the HVAC, adding a second story, or laying utility lines to the home. You can also adjust for casualty losses, like restoring your home after a fire or water damage.

e higher your adjusted basis is, the lower your capital gains are.
