Mitchco Garages By
Specializing in RV garages
Mitch Clausen & Sons have been in the contracting business a combined total of 47 years. They are third generation contractors. Mitch began working in construction and remodeling as a child, working for his father’s Minnesota-based company. It was under his father’s tutelage that Mitch acquired all the skills necessary to build and remodel homes. When Mitch turned 18, he had the realization that it was “now or never” to dream big and pursue building his own contracting company. Mitch soon found that he really enjoyed building garages and in 1983 decided to make garage building the primary focus of his business. Since then, Mitchco has built over 5,000 Garages in the greater Denver Metro area. Mitchco Specializes in RV garages and builds 30-50 complete garages annually. Mitchco now focuses primarily on the Adams County region where they reside, but builds garages all over the North East Denver Metro area.

y unique background in western medicine and holistic healthcare combined with gentle Chiropractic instrument adjusting allows me to help numerous people suffering from various conditions from head to toe. I have a passion for teaching and helping my patients expand their knowledge and understanding about their body and health, empowering them to make better decisions leading to a more active and independent life. I am excited to serve Brighton and its surrounding communities. My experience in healthcare began over 25 years ago when I received training in the Army as a combat medic and then on as a Licensed Practical Nurse. This allowed me to gain valuable experience in emergency rooms, hospitals, primary care clinics (internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics), neurosurgery and spine, and long-term care facilities. I furthered my education by completing pre-med and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology. Then, in December 2001, I achieved my childhood dream goal of obtaining my Doctor of Chiropractic degree. I additionally completed Post-Graduate training in Applied Kinesiology and Acupuncture as well as thousands of hours of other Chiropractic techniques and education in nutrition since. My wife (Heidi) and I have a “Brady Bunch” family with my 3 and her 3 and we have a rescued German Short-Haired Pointer named Skye instead of a housekeeper. My wife is an educator and has worked for Brighton 27J and Adams 12. Like most people that live in Colorado, we enjoy the outdoors mostly with hiking and biking. We love taking trips and creating memories with the family.

You may have heard that the Medicare Supplement Plan F is no longer available. There is some truth to that but let me clarify. Folks who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 cannot get the Plan F. Those who were on Medicare prior to January 1, 2020 can. But what does all this mean anyway??? Insurance companies like to compartmentalize their plans. They might offer a variety of Medicare Supplement plans but they put each policy into its own bucket. If the bucket is full of clients, the monthly premiums stay very stable. If the bucket starts to lessen, then the premium can be effected. Where a person might have had 5-8% annual rate increases from their plan, they might start seeing 10-13% rate increases when fewer people are in the bucket. Right now, the State of Colorado is offering a Special Enrollment Period for folks who have an active Medicare Supplement Plan F. They have made it so folks with the Plan F can move to a Plan G and avoid going through the underwriting process. This could be a great opportunity for folks who want a lower premium but still want to keep the same basic coverage as their Plan F. In some cases, I have saved individuals $50-$120/month.

What’s the catch you might ask? The only difference in coverage: you become responsible for the Medicare Part B annual deductible. Currently this is $203 for 2021 but it can change each January. Once you meet this annual deductible, the Plan G picks up the rest of the expenses much like the Plan F. You don’t have to change doctors or hospitals. If they take your Plan F now, they will also take your Plan G. I understand this can cause some other questions and I am happy to help you work through any thoughts you might have about making the change. ProActive Physical Therapy offers BFR Therapy
Offered by: ProActive Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine
What is Blood Flow Restriction? Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) was initially used in Japan in the 1970’s and became popular in the U.S. in the early 2000’s. It was designed for military service members recovering from injuries. In 2015, the treatment technique became widely accessible to the general public. It involves applying an inflatable blood pressure device around a limb in order to reduce or prevent the blood flow out of the muscle. The goal is to increase muscle growth while minimizing joint load. Is it SAFE? Research surrounding BFR supports its effectiveness and safety for gaining strength. Studies have examined the safety concerns of this treatment and conclude that BFR is a safe tool for rehabilitation when it is prescribed and supervised by a trained professional. ProActive Physical Therapy uses the Delfi Personalized Tourniquet System, which is the only device that has been cleared by the FDA for this type of treatment. When used properly, the potential side effects are limited to bruising, soreness, and temporary numbness. In some situations, it might be the best, or only, option to help someone maintain or gain muscle strength safely. How can it help me? - Reduce the amount of muscle atrophy after surgery or injury. - Strengthen muscles that surround joints where arthritis is present with less pain. - Strengthen one side at a time to prevent imbalances. - Improve your cardiovascular and bone health. - Recover from tendonitis injuries faster. ProActive Physical Therapy individualizes this treatment for each patient, specific to their goals, training level and past medical history. To learn more about BFR Training at ProActive Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Brighton, visit proactivecolorado.com or call (720) 689-5637. We look forward to seeing you in clinic.

adly, identity theft happens throughout the year – but some identity thieves are particularly active during tax-filing season. How can you protect yourself? One of the most important moves you can make is to be suspicious of requests by people or entities claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. You may receive phone calls, texts and emails, but these types of communication are often just “phishing” scams with one goal in mind: to capture your personal information. These phishers can be quite clever, sending emails that appear to contain the IRS logo or making calls that may even seem to be coming from the IRS. Don’t open any links or attachments to the emails and don’t answer the calls – and don’t be alarmed if the caller leaves a vaguely threatening voicemail, either asking for personal information, such as your Social Security number, or informing you of some debts you supposedly owe to the IRS that must be taken care of “immediately.” In reality, the IRS will not initiate contact with you by phone, email, text message or social media to request personal or financial information, or to inquire about issues pertaining to your tax returns. Instead, the agency will first send you a letter. And if you’re unsure of the legitimacy of such a letter, contact the IRS directly at 800-829-1040. Of course, not all scam artists are fake IRS representatives – some will pass themselves off as tax preparers. Fortunately, most tax preparers are honest, but it’s not too hard to find the dishonest ones who might ask you to sign a blank return, promise you a big refund before looking at your records or try to charge a fee based on the percentage of your return. Legitimate tax preparers will make no grand promises and will explain their fees upfront. Before hiring someone to do your taxes, find out their qualifications. The IRS provides some valuable tips for choosing a reputable tax preparer, but you can also ask your friends and relatives for referrals. Another tax scam to watch out for is the fraudulent tax return – that is, someone filing a return in your name. To do so, a scammer would need your name, birthdate and Social Security number. If you’re already providing two of these pieces of information – your name and birthdate on social media, and you also include your birthplace – you could be making it easier for scam artists to somehow get the third. It’s a good idea to check your privacy settings and limit what you’re sharing publicly. You might also want to use a nickname and omit your last name, birthday and birthplace. Here’s one more defensive measure: File your taxes as soon as you can. Identity thieves often strike early in the tax season, so they can file their bogus returns before their victims. To learn more about tax scams, visit the IRS website (irs.gov) and search for the “Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft.” This document describes some signs of identity theft and provides tips for what to do if you are victimized. It’s unfortunate that identity theft exists, but by taking the proper precautions, you can help insulate yourself from this threat, even when tax season is over.

hile it may seem like ten, it’s actually only been one year since “Covid” and “pandemic” became part of our daily vocabulary, and “working remotely” and “remote school” a part of our daily lives. If the past year has taught us anything, learning to adapt living space has to be very high on the list. Home is no longer just the home base we leave behind each day as we head out to work, school, or other activities—it has become the place in which many of us literally live, work, and play. It should come as no surprise that this past year has also had a huge impact on 2021 design trends. Topping the list are 1) dedicated home office space, and 2) more delineated spaces (bye-bye open floor plans). Addressing both of those is the “cloffice”. Wait, what? Is that even a word? Well, while it may not [yet] be “Webster approved”—it’s actually a portmanteau of “closet” and “office”—“cloffice ideas” is most definitely a very popular search term that yields oodles of images and articles about a burgeoning small-space hack that gets you (or the kid(s)) away from the kitchen table while also providing a way to literally close the door on the work/school day when finished. Even if you are thinking of selling your home this year, repurposing an extra or under-utilized closet can be an inexpensive way to maximize space and help show potential buyers how the home can work for them. For proven expertise in establishing your home value and/or searching for a new or existing home, please call Jan at (303) 520-4340.

George, a small nerdy boy is sitting at his desk in school, watching the clock tick, not paying attention to the lesson, but simply counting the minutes. He is focused on grabbing his books and running out to the school bus before the bullies get to him in the yard. Sometimes though, he gets delayed, and that means that some older boy would spit on his backpack, call him names, or worse, beat up on him. But even if he makes it to the bus unscathed, he may also get beat up there, or embarrassed, like when another kid pulled George’s pants down in front of everyone to see and laugh. One day, with a black eye on his face, George finally admitted to his dad that he was being bullied in school. So his father took him to the local karate school, where he found a place where he finally belonged. A place where his efforts and talents were recognized and developed. He learned to stand up tall, even if small. To look at people in the eye and give a firm handshake. His demeanor changed from trying to hide in the crowd, to standing tall and proud of himself. That was the day when George’s life changed. He had found in himself, the potential that was hidden. The bullies tried again to bring him down, but he would not hide or run anymore. He finally stood up for himself, and in time, the bullies did not mess with him ever again. In a few years George earned his black belt in Karate, and became unstoppable. The rest… is history. If you follow the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), you may know him as George (RUSH) St-Pierre, a legend of the sport for his achievements and fighting style. Not to mention the financial success. He is not only an exceptional fighter, but also a gentleman, which I credit to his family and Karate upbringing. A few years ago, a panhandler approached George’s car in the streets of Quebec, and he recognized the shabby guy as the old school bully. The guy hesitated at seeing him, then apologized for what he did as a kid. George forgave him and gave him whatever money he had on him. He held no resentment toward the old time bully, but life had come full circle for them. George St-Pierre did not overcome the bullies by beating them up with his Karate. He overcame them by improving himself. He beat them by becoming successful in life. Karate had given him the tools to become a better version of himself and succeed. In a recent documentary about his journey from being a bullied child to becoming a champion, George gives us the answer to defeating the bullies. He reflects: “You do not overcome the bully by changing the bully. You overcome them by changing yourself. Before you can change the world, you must change yourself, then the world will change by itself after.” And so, I hope we all endeavor to do likewise for ourselves and for our children. YOUR MEDICARE INSURANCE CONNECTION
OFFERING
Spread the Word!! Offered by: Integrity Insurance of Brighton
Are you enrolled in a Plan F, C, or High Deductible F Medigap Policy in Colorado? There is a time-sensitive and incredibly important regulation for folks in Colorado who have a Medicare Supplement Plan F, Plan C, or High Deductible Plan F. Sadly, few people know about this one-time opportunity to change and it ends June 30, 2021! Everyone (and I do mean everyone) who is eligible, should consider changing to a Plan G, Plan D, or Plan G High Deductible. Colorado enacted a new regulation that allows you a ONE-TIME opportunity to change from Plan F to G, Plan C to D, or High Deductible Plan F to High Deductible G. Plan F had been the premier Medicare supplement for many years. In fact, there are over 120,000 members on these plans in Colorado that are impacted. Plan G has the same exact same coverage except that you are responsible for the Part B deductible, which will be $203 for the entire 2021 year. Likewise, the difference between C and D or High Deductible Plan F to High Deductible G is the same Part B deductible.

The premiums now and ongoing are a crucial consideration that begs for your consideration. Not only is the Plan G premium often consistently low enough to make up for the $203 annual deductible, but could surpass that significantly in some cases!

As stated by Eileen Dougherty, Executive Director of the Colorado Gerontological Society, in My PrimeTime News – “It is important to note that regardless of which company you elect to do business, the benefits that are covered are exactly the same. Plans that cost more do not offer additional benefits; similarly, plans that cost less do not offer fewer benefits.” And, “Medicare beneficiaries who want to stay with their current Medicare Plan C, F or F+ won’t have to pay the Medicare Part B deductible. However, The Society is advising that beneficiaries consider changing as we expect the Plan C, F or F+ premiums will escalate as fewer and fewer older adults are enrolled in those plans.” You can help yourself and our fellow Coloradans! The Greatest Gift Offered by: Melissa Rippy - Rippy Insurance Agency / Allstate
My dad was diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia in late September 2017. In the three short months he had AML, he underwent several blood transfusions that would not have been made possible without donors. More than 4.5 million patients need blood transfusions each year in the US and Canada and there are 43,000 pints of donated blood that are used EACH DAY in the US and Canada. Someone needs blood every two seconds and only 37% of the populations is eligible to donate blood. Did you also know that one pint can save up to three lives? For my dad’s heavenly birthday this year, we are going to celebrate his memory by hosting a blood drive. The Rippy Agency is co-hosting the mobile blood drive March 22nd in front of the agency. You can log onto www.donors. vitalant.org and input zip code 80601 or look for the Allstate Melissa Rippy – Bloodmobile drive on Monday, 03/22/2021. You can sign up online for an appointment starting at 11:30 a.m. through 3:00 pm. All donors will receive a goodie bag for their donation and time from our sponsors, the Rippy Agency, SERVPRO and Safelite Auto Glass. Did you know that hosted blood drivers supply roughly half of all blood donations in the US? Blood donation. It is about an hour of your time, but it could mean a lifetime for someone else.

’m going to jump directly to the point. Estate plans are for everyone! Many studies show that between 73 and 78% of people in the United States do not have an estate plan. If you are someone who doesn’t, your loved ones will likely face significant problems upon your disability or death because of your failure to put an estate plan into place. You may take the “Why should I care, I’ll be dead” approach. Those you leave behind will handle the problems upon your death, and they will pay substantially more in legal fees, court costs, and taxes. Sounds okay, if you don’t mind giving a lot of what you left for them to their lawyers? You may not care about what happens after your death, but have you thought about what happens if you become disabled? If you become unable to manage yourself or your finances, and do not have a basic estate plan in place, this can cause a great deal of frustration and expense for your family. The hard-earned money you saved to take care of yourself is spent on lawyers, court costs, and special healthcare professionals who examine and evaluate your capacity. It can cost $10,000 or more to have a guardian and/or conservator appointed for you by the court upon your incapacity. These expenses and frustrations can easily be avoided by having basic planning in place. Lawyers are making staggering amounts of money helping family members work through the problems created by people who fail to do any planning. Consider taking a little time to put an estate plan in place so you and your family receive the benefit, rather than the lawyers. If you would like additional information regarding how to develop an estate plan that works effectively for you and your family, visit www.EstatePlansThatWork.com to sign up for a complimentary virtual educational workshop.

City of Brighton bus shelters and benches feature You Have Options campaign Offered by: City of Brighton Communications
In
its continued effort to promote its You Have Options Program (YHOP) to encourage reporting of sexual assault, the Brighton Police Department has launched a new campaign featuring the YHOP banner on city bus shelters and benches. As part of this campaign, three bus shelters (two of which are in English and one in Spanish) and one bus bench (in Spanish) feature the YHOP banner in Brighton, with a mirrored setup of bus shelters and a bus bench in Commerce City — locations in Brighton are at Bridge Street west of S. 18th Ave. (nearby Safeway), Bromley Lane west of Fulton Ave. (nearby Walmart), Platte Valley Medical Center east of 1600 Prairie Center Parkway, and 4th Avenue north of Jessup St. Funding comes from a Victims of Crime Act grant to continue the City’s outdoor YHOP campaign. Under-reporting of sexual assault remains a major problem throughout this country. The nationally-recognized You Have Options Program uses a victim-centered approach to offer options to victims of sexual violence who are considering reporting to law enforcement. The program ensures that every reporting party receives advocacy services throughout the process. In 2015, the Brighton Police Department was the first agency to adopt the You Have Options Program, after it was initiated by the Ashland, Oregon Police Department. As a certified YHOP agency, Brighton Police remains committed to sexual assault victims that they will not only be heard, but also have their individual concerns addressed during both the reporting and investigative process. Officers and detectives receive advanced training on trauma interviewing and investigative strategies to identify serial sexual perpetrators. This program is a commitment to victims of sexual assault to work with them through this process, should they choose to report. “We understand that every victim of sexual assault will have unique concerns during the reporting process and we will work with each victim to address those concerns,” said Brighton Police Chief Paul Southard. Reports of sexual assault can be made by phone at 303-655-2301, online, or in-person at Brighton Police headquarters located at 3401 E. Bromley Lane (or call 303-655-2301 to request that a police officer meets with you). All reports can be done anonymously. To learn more about YHOP and reporting options, visit www.reportingoptions.org/brighton-co. If you have questions, please contact Kim Messina, Victim Services Manager for the Brighton and Commerce City Police Departments, at kmessina@brightonco.gov or 303-655-2308.

Pre-Qualified or Pre-Approved? What’s the Difference? Offered by: Dan & Beth Cochran - The Haven Team, Keller Williams
T
here’s a lot to learn when you’re starting out on your home buying journey. From concepts like earnest money to closing costs, it’s a lot to take in during a very short period. But of all the things to know, understanding the difference between being pre-qualified and preapproved for your mortgage is one of the most important. Why Your Mortgage Application Status Matters It’s always been a good idea to bring a strong offer to the negotiating table when it comes to real estate, but it’s even more vital when the market is short on inventory and long on buyers. If you’re in a multiple offer situation (and sometimes, even if you’re not), the sellers are going to weigh the various offers they receive to decide if they think your offer is enough to bring in what they need to sell their home, as well as considering how strong an offer it is. A strong offer is one that has a lot of the obstacles already removed. For example, if you need to sell your house before you can close on the one you’re making an offer on, this might be considered a weak offer for some sellers. A weak offer doesn’t mean a bad offer, necessarily; it’s simply an offer that looks like it could be tricky to actually get to the closing table. The risk versus reward is too high. This is why having the right kind of mortgage application status plays in your favor when it comes to negotiation. Mortgage Pre-Qualification Versus Mortgage Pre-Approval When you meet with a lender for the first time, they generally ask some probing questions about your income and assets, as well as your expenses and credit file. They’re not just being nosy; that lender is trying to help figure out just how much home you can qualify for and what Bee a part of The Buzz next month! To advertise, call:

programs might be best for your financial picture. Sometimes, these lenders will send you elsewhere because their banks or partner lending institutions simply can’t help you, but in a lot of cases they’ll produce something called a pre-qualification letter. Pre-qualification goes largely by your word about your income and expenses, and is not a promise to lend. It’s simply a hypothetical among a list of hypotheticals. If you do in fact make this much money, your credit is as assumed, the house you choose lines up with these guidelines, and rates don’t change dramatically, you should be able to buy this much house. You can see how that would be a bit dodgy for a seller to hang all their hopes on. A pre-approval, on the other hand, shows that you’ve gone through the additional steps to reach the highest level of mortgage approval you can get without actually having a house secured (the house you choose also figures into the final approval, but just how it figures depends on the loan program). For a pre-approval, you’ll need to provide income documents, permission for the lender to pull a full credit report, and details on any assets or liabilities you hold that aren’t included in your credit file. A pre-approval isn’t instant; it requires more review, and you’ll need to choose a lending program to be approved for. However, doing all this extra work shows potential sellers that you’re already putting in a lot of effort to ensure you can actually close when the day comes, and that you’re eager to move the process along as quickly as possible. That’s the kind of buyer a seller wants to see! Please let us know if you have any questions. We would love to be your Real Estate Partner. Call us anytime or drop us an email. Screen Time During the Pandemic Offered by: Caroline Albert-Martin, M.D.
M
any parents are wondering how to safely manage screen time and media usage for their children during these unprecedented times. While using screens has become more necessary for remote learning and connecting with family members, here are some general tips to keep your kids safe and healthy.
1. Children younger than 18 months should avoid screen media except for video chatting with family. 2. Children age 2 to 5 should limit screen use to 1 hour per day, and choose only high-quality programs. 3. Children over age 6 should have consistent limits on the type of media allowed and the time spent using media. 4. Media use should not take the place of physical activity. Children should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. 5. Media use should not interfere with sleep. Children should not sleep with electronic devices in their bedrooms, and should avoid exposure to screens for at least 1 hour before bed. 6. Take frequent breaks to avoid eye strain and dry eyes. Eye doctors recommend the 20/20/20 rule: look away from the screen every 20 minutes, focus on an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds. Children should also walk away from the screen for at least 10 minutes every hour. 7. Communicate openly with your children about online safety and treating others with respect online. 8. Designate media-free times for your family, such as during dinnertime.

Helping Children Through the Pandemic Offered by: Dr. Warren Johnson, Owl Creek Medical
P
arent-teacher conferences February 2021: “Dr. Johnson, your grandson, Little Tom is failing language arts. Go see his doctor. Maybe something is wrong.” My two legs turn to jelly. My two eyes barely contain the tears. My one mind strains to control the panic: “Little Tom is sick?! There’s something wrong with his brain!?” ADHD, autism, or worse? But wait, I’m a doctor who knows about these things. COVID 19 has upset every school child in America, perhaps every child in the world, making them look normal on the outside but feel terrible on the inside. They feel lost without daily structure of the classroom and the hallway chaos between classes. Remote learning at home always within your sight adds a new stress for school aged kids. They have no opportunity to master life’s little lessons on their own. Kids need some time away from parents. With hybrid learning the student is often confused about in-school expectations compared to in-home rules. Teachers too suffer from the lack of structure and lack the support of fellow educators to talk about Tom’s progress in other classes. Counselors and special education teachers are not easily available when schools are closed. So when the teacher says “have Tom evaluated by the doctor”. Don’t panic! Doctors can help by assuring that Tom’s hearing and vision are adequate. Tom may be depressed, a normal response to the stress of COVID 19. Fortunately most students do not need medication or special treatment. Tom’s parents benefitted from consulting his doctor, and so did I. Owl Creek Medical has adopted a careful approach to pandemic school problems and our patients seem to appreciate the improved performance and higher self esteem. ave you noticed that your gums have started to shrink or recede? Gum recession is common and can lead to sensitivity, root surface cavities and eventually the loss of the tooth. Until recently, the surgery to fix this problem required cutting donor tissue from the roof of the mouth and grafting the tissue to cover the receded areas using sutures. With the Chao Pinhole Surgical TechniqueTM (PST) a doctor can correct receding gums without cutting or sutures and with little or no downtime. There is virtually no pain, minimal bleeding and an instant transformation of the defective gum line. PST is a scalpel free, suture free and conventional graft free method for gum recession. Patient’s love this procedure because it’s quick, easy and instantly pleasing. The teeth are cleaned and the gums are numbed. A small entry point is made in the gum above the tooth or teeth to be treated. Specialized instruments are inserted through the pinhole(s) to free the gum tissue, then the gums are gently guided down to their proper position.

Vitamin D Deficiency Offered by: Dawn Dycus, M.D.- Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.
V
itamin D is important for bone health; it helps your body absorb calcium which is one of the main building blocks of bone. Vitamin D deficiency has the potential to cause significant issues with bone health, including bone development in children. From birth until 1 year old, infants need 400 units of vitamin D daily. All children over 1 year old including teenagers need 600 units daily. Infants, children, and teens already deficient or at high risk for vitamin D deficiency may need even more. Breastfed infants are at higher risk of vitamin D deficiency because human breast milk does not contain high amounts of this vitamin. It is recommended for all breastfeeding infants to be supplemented with 400 units of vitamin D daily. Certain medical conditions or medications can also increase risk for vitamin D deficiency. Talk with your primary care provider to see if your child is at risk for vitamin D deficiency and discuss having a blood test done to measure a vitamin D level. People can get vitamin D in three ways: from the skin, in the diet, or from supplements. Whenever skin is exposed to sunlight, it will create vitamin D. However, with recent concern over skin aging and skin cancer, many people now limit their sun exposure or use sunscreen, which can lower skin production of vitamin D. Foods naturally high in vitamin D include fatty fish, cheese, mushrooms, and egg yolks. Other foods fortified with vitamin D include dairy, cereals, orange juice, and soy drinks. Many multivitamins contain vitamin D, and there are vitamin D supplements available over the counter. Check with your primary care provider about how much vitamin D to take and for how long, as too much vitamin D can also be harmful. With the proper guidance, you can ensure that your child is receiving the right amount of vitamin D to build healthy bones.

T
he chakras are your access to the energy around you. They take in needed energy, and expel unwanted energy. They open or close to allow you to interact with, or close down from, your environment. When we have been exposed to a high level of stress, pain or illness, the chakras may become congested and/or unbalanced. The resulting discord in the chakras can cause agitation or sluggishness, depending on the individual. This condition increases as you continue to live and work in a stressful or chaotic environment; and concurrently, the chakra’s functioning becomes more impaired causing erratic energy or even shut down of the chakra. Chakra bowls emit a sound specific to each chakra. The sound or frequency is harmonizing, clearing and energizing to the chakra. I will let each bowl sing you its song, from root to crown, leaving you feeling refreshed, clear-headed and more balanced. During this process, we will identify and create an affirmation to use with each chakra. These affirmations will be programmed into the chakra, by you in conjunction with the song of the bowl. The affirmative messages will be accepted and brought into your mind/body system. Affirmation work is a powerful tool which stimulates your subconscious to create the life you want, building new habits, generating potent insights and stoking your own sense of personal power and self-worth. I have been perfecting and practicing various healing and meditative techniques for close to 10 years. I am an Energy Healer, a psychic intuitive and spiritual counselor. Come see me today in my home office. Covid precautions are in place and masks will be required. March special is $75 session. A session usually lasts 50 to 70 minutes. Let’s reset your programming! IRA 101: Know the Facts Offered by: T. Lloyd Worth
I
ndividual retirement accounts (IRAs) are one of the most common assets people rely on to save and invest for retirement. In fact, more than a third of households in America own an IRA. If you’re thinking of opening an IRA for the first time, it’s a good idea to review the rules. Even if you have had an IRA for years, note that laws change. The Different Types There are two main types of IRA accounts to choose from: traditional and Roth. The timing of the tax advantages is the main difference between the two. For a traditional IRA, contributions are tax deductible and tax is paid upon withdrawal. Roth IRA contributions are taxed in the year they are made, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free. Both types are almost equally popular: • 36% of American households have Roth IRAs • 35% of American households have traditional IRAs • 26% of American households contribute to both There are also employer-sponsored IRAs. These may fall into either of the two categories. Contribution Limits The IRS set a 2020 annual limit of $6,000 for people under 50 years old. People who are 50 years and older can make a total contribution of $7,000. What some breadwinners do to maximize contributions is to file joint tax returns and open a second account for their spouses. They then make additional contributions to this account. The IRS states that the combined contribution cannot exceed the lesser of the couple’s taxable income or the contributor’s individual limit times two. Eligibility The IRS considers net income from self-employment, gross wages and gross salaries as qualifying income. Too much income, however, and IRA contributions can get reduced or prohibited altogether: • Qualifying Widower or Married Filing Jointly: The regular contribution rules apply up to $196,000. From $196,000 to $206,000, the IRS reduces the contribution limit. No contributions are allowed after $206,000. • Single, Married Filing Separately (did not live together) or Head-of-household: Filers who earn less than $124,000 follow the usual contribution rules. More than this up to $139,000, the IRS reduces the contribution limit and after $139,000, contributing is not allowed. • Married Filing Separately (lived together): The IRS reduces the contribution amount for less than $10,000 and prohibits contributions for $10,000 in income or more. Tax Deductions How much income you make determines how much of your total contribution you can deduct from your taxable income and whether or not your contribute to an employer sponsored retirement plan: • Qualifying Widower or Married Filing Jointly: Filers who make $104,000 or less can take tax deductions up to the full contribution limit. More than this up to less than $124,000, people can get a partial deduction. Beyond this, there is no deduction. • Single or Head-of-household: For total incomes of $65,000 or less, the individual can take the full deduction. More than this up to less than $75,000, there is only a partial deduction. Beyond $75,000, there is no deduction. • Married Filing Separately: There is a partial deduction for income up to $10,000. After $10,000, there is no deduction. Distributions Like any retirement account, you do not need to wait until retirement to claim your distributions. Here’s what you need to know: • There is no penalty for traditional IRA withdrawals after reaching age 59 and a half. • Traditional IRA distributions get taxed at the rate that is current at the time of withdrawal. • Roth withdrawals are not taxed because taxes were already paid upfront. • Roth IRAs do not have mandatory withdrawal rules, but traditional IRAs require distributions by April 1st of the year you turn 72 or there are considerable tax penalties. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to choosing and funding a specific type of IRA account. This is why speaking directly with a financial professional is so important.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Finding Balance with Acupuncture Offered by: Jessica Ahmed - Brighton Acupuncture
F
ibromyalgia and chronic fatigue affect the lives of millions each year, with symptoms including chronic muscle pain, severe and enduring fatigue, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, anxiety and depression. Significant improvement is generally possible through diet, lifestyle, and natural medicine, although it is realistic to expect gradual progress rather than an overnight solution. Diet recommendations include limiting sugar, dairy, wheat, soy and caffeine, and focusing on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fat. Try to maintain healthy ways of dealing with stress, take enough time for yourself, and learn to say no if that is difficult for you. Acupuncture improves symptoms of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia by benefitting immune function, increasing energy, reducing muscle pain and spasm, reducing stress, increasing circulation, and regulating the nervous system, altering neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Chinese herbs are great for nourishing the immune and digestive systems, increasing energy and benefiting sleep.

Play Sudoku - Skill is best, not Luck! S
udoku is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is also an excellent brain game. If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Start a game today and make it a part of your daily brain workout! The goal of Sudoku is to fi ll in a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9×9 grid will have some of the squares fi lled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3×3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 Level: EASY

eing active is critical to overall health. COVID-19 and the related restrictions have had a very serious impact on the mental and physical health of countless people. Lack of social interaction and physical activity have had a negative impact on millions of seniors across the country. For many, decreased physical activity has led to muscle loss, weight gain, increased joint and muscle pain, and an overall decreased quality of life. Lack of social interaction has caused difficulties with mental health as well. For well over a decade, I have educated my patients and their loved ones on the connection between hearing loss and brain health. During that time the focus was on ensuring people knew the importance of getting hearing aids as soon as possible when they became aware of having a hearing loss. Recently, however, we have witnessed a problem even with those who wear hearing aids regularly as well as those with no hearing loss. Individuals who are isolated from others and not engaging in regular conversation are experiencing a decrease in their ability to understand speech. The key to preserving the auditory system is using the system. The system extends from the ear we see on the outside of the head all the way to deep

within the brain. Like every other part of our body, we have to use it or it will atrophy, becoming weak and potentially nonfunctional. Studies have shown that the average person hears somewhere between 20,000 to 30,000 words a day. This means that normally, a constant flow of sound energy keeps the system working. For those who are socially isolated, that number can be significantly lower, especially when one chooses to use closed captions when watching TV instead of having the sound turned on. The lack of auditory stimulation leads to decreased auditory function. Even those with good hearing need to be constantly hearing to successfully stimulate the brain. The only way to overcome this problem is to make sure individuals engage in conversation, especially stimulating conversation, on a regular basis. Family members and care givers will need to make an extraordinary effort to ensure this stimulation occurs on a regular, constant basis. Personal, face-to-face conversation is the most effective way to communicate. When that is not possible, video meetings with a tablet, computer or smartphone are the next best option followed by phone calls. Listening to music is another way to stimulate the brain through the auditory system. At Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center, we encourage everyone in the community to take an active part in making sure those who have been isolated have more social interaction through conversation and increased physical activity.

Pandemic accelerates adoption of telehealth strategies for hospice care Offered by: Tricia Ford, VP of Operations for Care Synergy
T
he COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for hospice and palliative care patients and their families. If there is any good at all to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic for hospices and palliative care patients and their families, it may be that the life-changing pandemic has accelerated the use of telehealth. You may have heard about some of the now-common uses of telehealth: A teenager or a working parent at home with minor symptoms talks to their doctor over the video camera on their computer. Or an elderly patient uses a home blood pressure monitor tracked remotely by their provider to avoid another trip to the hospital. With so much of our world off limits because of the pandemic, many hospice and palliative care providers are employing the versatile and adaptable qualities of telehealth. The same technology is being used to provide care at skilled nursing facilities and assisted living centers, where many hospice patients live. These facilities have had to, understandably, restrict outside contact, often even from family members. When nursing homes and assisted living centers collaborate with hospice providers to embrace telehealth innovations, our patients and their families see the benefits immediately. Telehealth may have arrived in hospice and palliative care a little sooner than expected and the patients and families receiving care will benefit over the near and long term from these advances.
et ready to plant a garden for a greener future! The City of Brighton Utilities Department in partnership with Resource Central invites the public to purchase a plant through the Garden In A Box Program. Through this partnership, City of Brighton utility customers can receive a $25 discount off of the water-wise garden kits while supplies last. Sales open to the public on March 1. Residents can choose from 12 Garden In A Box kits with the $25 discount, with boxes ranging in size from 60 to 100 square feet and including anywhere from 15 to 32 starter plants. Box kit selections range from vibrant hardy xeric (low-water) perennials to mixtures of cool and warm-season crops including leafy greens, squash, tomatoes and more. Gift certificates are also available for purchase ranging from $25 to $150 ($25 discount also applicable). Regardless of expertise, the program provides a significant water conservation tool in the form of a plant-by-number garden kit. These professionally-designed gardens improve the beauty and water efficiency of any landscape. Each box kit includes starter plants, a plant and care guide and plant-by-number maps, making this perfect for all gardening levels. Find the perfect garden for you and your landscape by visiting ResourceCentral.org/Gardens. Garden kits will be available for pick-up in May — details will be released on the City’s website and social media accounts at a later date. For more information, visit brightonco.gov/gardeninabox, email gardeninfo@resourcecentral.org or call 303-999-3820 ext. 222.
About Garden In A Box: Garden In A Box is a water conservation program of Resource Central (formerly Center for Resource Conservation). They are also available to customers outside these partnerships, starting at $79 and are very competitively priced. When coupled with RC’s Water-Wise Landscape Seminars, community members across the Front Range can gain valuable expertise that will strengthen their conservation practices and benefit them for years to come. BRIGHTON RESOURCE

Benefits to Purchasing New Construction
Offered by: Scott & Lora Nordby, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Innovative Real Estate
It’s no secret that inventory in the Denver metro area continues to stay at record low levels. There are not enough houses on the market to accommodate the influx of people moving into the area. New construction is working hard to keep up with demand, and many people are looking at those homes for purchase in the new year. If you’re in the market to buy a new home, consider these benefits when making your decision: Less competition New and custom-built homes are an attractive option because there isn’t the bidding war to contend with when you’re looking at a resale. You’ll deal with some haggling over costs and details, but there won’t be lots of other people competing for the same house. This means you can just focus on negotiating the terms that are best for you.
WE FEEL LUCKY TO SERVE THE BRIGHTON REAL ESTATE COMMUNITY!!
627 East Bridge Street • Brighton, CO 80601
Get what you want Obviously, custom-built homes give you complete control over the layout and finishing of your home. But even new tract housing offers a variety of floor plans and finishing touches you can choose from. From flooring to cabinetry, and even more, you can fine-tune your new home so it’s exactly what you’ve dreamed of! Contemporary architecture Newly built offer a number of advances, including contemporary floor plans and architecture. Enjoy open floor plans and more natural light in your new home, which assists with energy use.
NYSE: FNF
www.heritagetco.com
Energy efficient New homes are built to current energy efficiency standards. Windows are sealed well, insulation is dialed in, and appliances meet and exceed expectations for energy use. All of these put together mean it takes less energy to heat, light, and run your appliances so you save money on your bills. Fewer repairs Because everything in and on the house is brand new, major repairs are generally 7-10 years away. OUR PEOPLE Jenna was amazing! My home buying process took over a year. In that time she continued to work hard for me and it paid off with my new condo! I can’t thank her enough! —Jeremy
Tabatha was top-notch! Her guidance, professionalism, attitude, knowledge, and trust. I can’t say enough great things about her. I would strongly recommend Tabatha to anyone. —Theresa
REVIEW FOR: JENNA POWER, REALTOR®
REVIEW FOR: TABATHA RATLIFF, REALTOR®
She was very knowledgeable about the area. She went above and beyond to make sure the sale of the house went smoothly. Would highly recommend her. She was always easy to reach anytime of day. Made great suggestions on how to stage the house and the yard. Made sure everything went well at the closing of my house and the purchase of my new house out-of-state. —Melissa
