lot of people can be nervous about the retirement years. It’s a whole new phase of life, an unknown. Retirement brings with it navigating Social Security, Medicare & finally using our retirement accounts. It must feel so strange to be putting money away your whole life and then all of a sudden being at the age where you get to live on that investment. I will never claim to be a Social Security expert, but I have a lot of folks ask me about the best time to start taking Social Security income. I tell people to always consider what makes you most comfortable. If you take it early, you have a reduced monthly benefit forever. If you wait and take it at full retirement or later, you are increasing your monthly income for the rest of your life. You have to decide what monthly income you are willing to live on for the rest of your life. I look at it from a monthly perspective because my bills come every month. Others look at it as a total lifetime benefit and will take it early so they are getting more money over the course of their life. When it comes to Medicare, if you are receiving Social Security income benefits, Social Security will deduct your Medicare premium from your income each month. If you are not receiving Social Security benefits then you will receive a bill for Medicare and will need to pay them directly. As always, I am more than happy to help you with your Medicare questions and can even help with some of your Social Security questions. I’m just a phone call away, 720-626-6524. you’re looking for something fun to do this July 4th, come see us! We’re celebrating Independence Day – and community – July 4th the right way with food, fun, and fireworks in person. Fireworks, Ninja Warrior Course, bounce houses, Fire Hose Water Slide, Petting Zoo, People Puller Tractor Ride, food trucks, beer garden, Car & Bike Show, live DJ, and evening concert with rising country music star, Kimi Most. Registration and a small fee are required for the Car & Bike Show, and the Ninja competition starting 4:30pm. All other activities are FREE! Community celebrations are coming back from a long (uninvited) slumber this year with special meaning. I think for those of us in public service roles in particular, we have spent months planning for how best to serve everyone and bring back what made our communities so strong to begin with – each other! Fort Lupton has always taken great pride in offering progressive events that attract a regional crowd, yet maintain that ‘hometown vibe.’ The July 4th Independence Day celebration is the perfect time to celebrate community…it’s our comeback tour starting on July 4th. If you’re ready to get out and have some family fun, we welcome you to make our hometown, your hometown July 4th! Visit us online at: www.TheBrightonBuzz.com

une is Effective Communications Month. And it’s a good idea to recognize the importance of good communications because it plays a role in almost every aspect of living – including your finances. You’ll want to clearly communicate your financial goals to your loved ones – and you’ll want to hear theirs, too. Let’s look at some of the communications you might have with family members: Your spouse – You and your spouse may have different thoughts about a range of financial topics – how much to save, how much to spend, the level of debt with which you’re comfortable and so on. Try to reach some type of consensus on these issues. However, in regard to investing, you don’t necessarily have to act in unison all the time. You each may have different investment styles – one of you may be more aggressive, willing to take on more risk in exchange for potentially higher returns, while the other would rather invest with an eye toward mitigating risk, even it means accepting a lower return. Of course, there’s nothing stopping each of you from pursuing your individual investment strategies in your own accounts – IRA, 401(k) and so on. Still, if you are going to work toward common goals – especially toward a shared vision of your retirement lifestyle – you each may want to compromise in your investment choices. And this accommodation is even more necessary in your joint accounts. Your parents – If you may someday be involved with your parents’ financial plans – which is highly likely – you should know in advance what to expect. This may not be the easiest conversation to have, but it’s an important one. So, for example, ask your parents if they have a durable power of attorney, which allows them to designate someone to manage their financial affairs if they become physically or mentally incapacitated. You might also inquire if they have protected themselves against the potentially enormous costs of longterm care, such as an extended nursing home stay. If not, you might suggest that they contact a financial advisor, who can offer solutions. Once you begin communicating about these issues, you may well want to go further into your parents’ estate plans to determine what other arrangements, if any, they have made. If it seems that their plans are not fully developed, you may want to encourage them to contact an attorney specializing in estate planning. Your grown children – Just as you talk to your parents about their estate plans, you’ll want to discuss the same topic with your own grown children. Let them know who you have named as a durable power of attorney, what’s in your last will and testament and whether you’ve established a living trust. If you’re already working with a financial advisor and an estate planning professional, make sure your children know how to contact these individuals. Of course, you don’t have to confine your communications to estate plans – if you want to help your children financially, such as loaning them money for a down payment on a home, let them know. By talking with your loved ones about key financial matters, everyone benefits. So, keep those lines of communication open. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, Member SIPC.

Buying a Home in a Tough Market Offered by: Jan Hepp-Struck, Hepp Realty
If
you’re like most hopeful homebuyers, you know whether you prefer to buy a move-in ready property or a fixer-upper, and if the latter, what level of “fixing up” you’re willing to take on. But in a tough market like the one we’re now experiencing, with limited inventory and crazy high price points often exceeding appraisal value, buyers who are willing to re-evaluate their requirements and broaden their search to include properties needing work, are having a higher level of success. This shift has been especially true for millennial buyers who, according to a recent survey by Angi (formerly Angie’s List), purchased a home requiring varying degrees of renovations, though only 42.4% of them began their home search with that intention. These buyers cited price point as the primary driver but the unspoken driver behind rising price points is, of course, the disparity between supply and demand. Move-in ready homes, especially in desirable neighborhoods, are always going to be more expensive than properties in need of renovations. The survey also highlighted that buyers (46% of respondents) who didn’t exceed their budget on the purchase price of properties needing renovations did ultimately end up exceeding their overall budget within the first year because of the renovations. The exploding cost of lumber, currently up more than 200% over a year ago (Forbes), is certainly a factor. For those unaware, the pandemic driven labor shortage has resulted in a shortage of lumber, and the cost is projected to continue climbing for the foreseeable future as we head into the home building/renovation season. For proven expertise in establishing your home value and/or searching for a new or existing home, please call Jan at (303) 520-4340.

The Bumblebee Shouldn’t Fly… and yet it does Offered by: Colorado Karate Club
As
a young child, I wasn’t the most athletic of kids, a little on the chubby side actually. My mom’s friends would walk up to me and pinch my fat cheeks exclaiming how cute I was. An already grumpy kid that I was, the unwanted attention annoyed me even more. My older brothers were more athletic than me, they integrated our school’s soccer team, track and field, and others. Me, on the other hand, had the honor to make captain of the chess team three years in a row. While I did try out for the other sport squads, I just never made the final cut. In Karate however, I found something that I could do without having to “make the team”. I developed at my own pace, and progressed according to my own efforts and capability. In time, I came to excel at Karate, just as my older brothers had done before me. But most importantly, I enjoyed it, and thrived doing it... Many years later, I still do. To me, doing well at Karate was like the fly of a bumblebee. People wonder how a bumblebee can fly with such tiny wings and a large body. Similarly, one would ask, how could someone excel at Karate when they are not physically gifted? The problem, I think, is that we make the wrong assumptions about the bees and about people. For a bumblebee it would be impossible to fly like a bird does. Instead, this oddly shaped insect has to flap its wings over two hundred times per second in order to get some lift. Same objective, different approach. As a Karate practitioner, I could not rely on my natural ability to progress in my training. Instead, Karate required other things first, discipline, focus, perseverance, and determination. With that as a base, everything else came later in its own time. I see this with my own students, but I also see it in everyday life. Those folks who have the mental strength to outwork their competition and to stay on task when things are difficult. Those are the folks who succeed, even against all odds. People wonder how they got there, and the answer is that, like the bumblebee, they flapped their wings furiously while many others tried to glide to their goals. To my students I say, be more like the bumblebee, work hard, be consistent, and find a way to achieve your dreams, even if it requires a whole different approach. Not only are you more likely to succeed, but you actually become a much stronger individual through the journey. And that’s what I wish for you as well.

United Power Announces Fast Charging Station in Keenesburg Charger Part of Co-op’s Growing EV Charging Network Offered by: United Power
CASH BACK FROM YOUR CO-OP PROOF THAT YOUR MEMBERSHIP PAYS
CAPITAL CREDITS ARE COMING SOON Cooperative members share in the ownership, construction, maintenance and prosperity of their electric utility, and that investment is referred to as capital credits. Capital credits represent our members’ ownership in United Power and are one of the most unique and rewarding benefits of being a member of an electric cooperative. For more information and frequently asked questions about capital credits visit www.unitedpower.com/capital-credits. HOW MUCH IS YOUR REFUND? Refund amounts are based on length of membership and amount of power used during the period retired. The longer you are a members, the larger your refund becomes.
Brighton, CO – United Power announced Tuesday its second electric vehicle charging station is now operational and available for public use. The new charging station is located at the Market Street Mart in Keenesburg, filling a gap in available charging options for rural electric vehicle owners and drivers between Brighton and Fort Morgan. Both cooperative charging stations are available on the ChargePoint network. “United Power has made a commitment to providing innovative technologies that are beneficial for members,” said Energy Programs Director Joel Danford. “This installation not only helps us continue to fulfill that commitment but also keep pace with the emerging trend toward electric vehicles.” The Keenesburg charging station is a 62.5 kW direct current (DC) fast charger available for anyone who has set up a ChargePoint account. Anyone can set up a ChargePoint account using the mobile app or an activation card available through the mail. The charging station was installed with the help of a grant from the Colorado Energy Office’s Charge Ahead Colorado program. United Power has invested in several educational resources for members interested in electric vehicles. The cooperative launched its Choose EV web portal in June, providing a wealth of information about both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It also hosted a live webinar for National Drive EV Week to provide additional education and alleviate common concerns and hesitations about purchasing an electric vehicle. The cooperative installed its first charging station at its Coal Creek office in 2019. United Power leadership continues to look at the electric vehicle landscape and consider programs that will offer the best benefit for members, including additional charging locations in its growing network. “We have made a consistent effort to invest in electric vehicle resources for members over the past couple years,” said Mark A. Gabriel, United Power’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our goal is to provide the right opportunities and the right programs that make electric vehicles practical and accessible for more of our members, especially those who live in rural communities.” United Power is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative delivering electricity to more than 97,000 meters at homes, businesses and farms in Colorado’s north-central front range. For more information about the cooperative visit www.unitedpower.com or follow on social media at facebook. com/unitedpower or twitter.com/unitedpowercoop.

Why “Grandfathered” into Medicare Plan F, should not be ignored! Offered by: Integrity Insurance of Brighton
O
ften when we hear we are “Grandfathered in” for something it comes with some benefit and has a mostly positive connotation. It is not always better! What if, instead of staying with the Medicare Supplement Plan F that you are “Grandfathered” into, you found out you had another option that expires at the end of June and is a sound choice that saves you money? All Colorado Grandfathered Members and even new members on a Plan F have a chance that is about to run out. Without new 65 year old’s joining Plan F rates most likely will increase faster. A person on a Plan F in Colorado has an opportunity to move to a Plan G without answering any health questions only until June 30th. The advantage here is that if you have significant health issues and otherwise would not pass medical underwriting, this chance guarantees your acceptance. The rates for Plan G are lower, sometimes significantly lower! Let’s consider Larry age 73, has Medicare Plan F since retirement at age 65. His current Plan F has paid all his medically necessary procedures and he has been highly satisfied with his coverage and carrier. His current premium is $279 per month for Plan F, moving to Plan G he reduces his monthly premium to $182. Per month the savings would be $85 and annually that’s $1020! So, the coverage with Plan G is the same and the only difference is a 1 time per year deductible for Part B of $203 this year. The money Larry would save is approximately $800 in this example, not to mention his continued savings well into the future. This chance for many is a one-time opportunity and should not be overlooked, Colorado is the only state allowing this type of change. Call if this affects you, check with your friends and family as they most likely do not have the full picture and would benefit from an individual consultation ASAP, if they have Medicare Plan F. Don’t miss out call 303-887-8584.

Protect Your Family!
(Part 3 of 6)

B
ill and Jane’s daughter has struggled since the accident. She was only 13 when it happened, but it was clear she would be disabled for the balance of her life. Now 23, she is dependant upon government assistance for her survival and medical care. Bill and Jane thought they did not need estate planning. Why not just put everything in joint tenancy, because “it is simple and may avoid probate.” Thinking about their disabled daughter, they sought guidance from a counseling-oriented attorney who took time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect their daughter after they died. The attorney worked with them to put together a plan that would place their savings, life insurance and home in a trust for their daughter, following their deaths. This would prevent the assets from disqualifying their daughter from the benefits she is receiving from government programs. As a result, the inheritance can pay for things the government programs do not cover, providing additional comfort to their daughter. Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in basic estate plans. Individuals should look closely at all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide to them while they are alive, and provide to their spouses and their families after their death. Does your estate plan address these types of issues? If you would like to learn more about an estate planning process that is producing great results for families, visit www.EstatePlansThatWork.com to sign up for a complimentary educational workshop.

une is an exciting month as the Rippy Agency gets to attend the first car show in over a year! Join me on Saturday, June 26th, at Ye Olde Auto Club’s Show at the Adam’s County Museum, located at 9601 Henderson Rd. You can find me underneath the Hagerty tent so stop by for some goodies! You can pre-register your ride or online at https://yeoldeautoclub.com. There is a $15 registration fee and another $5 if you register a second car. Registration begins at 9 am and awards are at 1 pm. All vehicle types are welcome and we hope to see you there! Warmer weather means more cars are on the road and the number of car accidents begin to increase. School is also out which means we’ll see more teen drivers on the road. More than half of all teen drivers will have an accident in their first year of driving. Did you know that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens? While car accidents that involve teens happen year-round, the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” since the number of teens killed in car crashes increases each month during the summer by 26% as compared to other months of the year. If you’d like a free parent/teen driver agreement, email melissarippy@allstate. com or give us a call at 303.219.1470 and we will mail you one.

Road Trip Safety Offered by: Ellen McCormick,MD - Premier Pediatrics
At
any age a road trip with friends is one of modern life’s great pleasures, and for the young, one of the exciting steps to maturity, independence, and self-reliance. We Americans love books and movies about road trips and at some time most of us will be included on one. Our teens and young adult children are probably highest on the list of likely road trip participants. It’s worth the time to consider and discuss with teens and preteens the important and practical safety aspects of climbing into a car headed for the open road. What should you check on before departing with your friends? Some items to consider are: Is the registration sticker on the license plate current? Do you have the car’s license number, make and model in your memory or better yet, your phone? Is sobriety an agreed upon requirement for driving? Do you have roadside assistance coverage and is their contact number in your phone? Are the registration and proof of insurance easily accessible to the driver, and do all potential drivers have their licenses on hand? Imagine getting pulled over in the next 5 miles and plan accordingly. Who is the designated driver? Does everyone have a cell phone with the phone numbers of a parent of every other person in the car? If you needed their health insurance information could you easily/quickly get it? Is there a cell phone charger in the car? A charged cell phone is always the number one safety device while traveling. What are the group’s agreements on the route, stops, and payments for gas? Who is the designated navigator? Is there a second set of car keys and where? If you lose your credit card is the cancellation phone number in your phone? Have you photocopied all the ID and credit cards in your wallet so you know exactly what’s gone if the wallet disappears? Smoking and smoke exposure is largely a question relegated to the past but if anyone insists on lighting up, be prepared to tell them that you don’t have permission from your pediatrician to remain in the car. Vaping is also a harmful exposure: it is not just water vapor but it is time to leave the dark ages of nicotine addiction/dependency behind us. Nicotine is a previous generation’s affliction, unworthy of perpetuation. Who in the group knows how to change a tire and are the spare and jack in the trunk AND well maintained? Who In the group knows how to jump a car, and are there cables in the trunk? How much night driving will there be and who will drive at night? Who will NOT drive at night? Things to pack: A box of TicTacs/breath mints and a Vicks VapoInhaler handy in the driver’s door pocket or in the clean ashtray, for ready access by the driver, in the dark. A mouthful of breath mints and/ or a sniff of Vicks will fight off the sleepies and help to focus the mind even in the dark. And when this is needed, it is time to stop, walk, and change shifts. A small cooler of water and sodas for everyone. Pushing fluids makes your pediatrician happy and ensures regular stops for bathroom breaks, a brief walk, and reassessing the travel plan. Other things to pack: a trash bag, window cleaner and paper towels, and a well charged jump starter kit. These are cheap, compact and a valuable gift for any new driver or teen (available on Amazon, Walmart, etc.). Most roadside emergencies can be prevented or greatly mitigated by thinking about them and being prepared and educated, so talk with your teen and set the example every time you take a trip. Car problems usually happen at the most inconvenient time/place. So, have your teen change a tire at your curb in good weather, especially your daughters, please, as even today many girls are still not encouraged to learn practical automotive skills as much as are their brothers. And every adult who drives should know how to attach jumper cables and how to tighten lug nuts, even in the snow. This is COLORADO! We are the center of the known universe for awesome road trips!! So how about doing one this summer BEFORE your last one is grown and away?

Pool Safety This Summer Offered by: Rachael Janoso, M.D.- Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.
It
is nearly summertime. That means cook outs, trips to the park, and, of course, pools and water parks! While swimming pools are a great place on a hot summer day, they can be very dangerous for children if left unattended. The National Safety Council reports that drowning accidents are a significant cause of death or injury for children under 5, from being left unsupervised. This can include pools, both community and residential facilities, backyard pools, spas, lakes, water parks, and rivers. Even bathtubs, toilets, water dishes for pets and buckets of water can pose a risk to very young children if left unattended. All it takes is a moment of distraction. So, what can you do to keep your kids safe and have fun? Here are some safety tips: 1) Never leave your child alone, if you need to step away, bring your child with you. 2) Enroll your child in swim lessons. They should learn skills like floating, rolling to their back, and swimming to the sides of the pool. However, keep in mind that even “good swimmers” can drown too, especially if they are tired or there’s rough play. 3) Lifeguards aren’t baby sitters. 4) Teach children to stay away from drains. 5) Don’t swim alone, and especially not at night. 6) Don’t consume alcohol when operating a boat, and make sure everyone has a well-fitting life jacket. 7) Do not dive into unfamiliar or murky water where you cannot see the bottom. 8) Get training in CPR. Have a fun and safe Summer!

As a result of a traumatic event a piece of our soul breaks off and goes to hide in the astral/spiritual realms to avoid feeling the pain of this trauma. After a time this separation leaves our soul incomplete and fragmented; unknown longings, doubts and fears may present themselves for seemingly unrelated reasons or situations in our life. During the Soul Retrieval process the soul fragment will be found and reunited with the embodied soul, bringing a sense of renewed inner peace and strength to move forward in one’s life. Anyone who has experienced a significant traumatic event or a deep physical/ emotional wounding in their life, (this lifetime or past lifetimes), will benefit from soul retrieval.

Yes. The process is non-invasive, and does not cause the trauma to re-surface during the process, although some emotional processing may be experienced as the soul fragment releases its fears and becomes accustomed to life in the present time. There will be homework needed to facilitate this process or welcoming and reintegrating the soul piece fully. Call/Text Wellyssa to schedule: 720-732-5798, or email: wellyssaspellsong@gmail.com

or years I have wanted to create videos to help new students expedite the learning of horsemanship and horse behavior. Last spring, the pandemic gave me some down time to put together Part 1 of these lessons. The Horsemanship at Home online class has become a way for students to learn theory to help them understand why things are done the way they are done as well as “how to” reminders they could review before coming to a lesson. Students can review halter tying before they come so when they get here they remember how to tie it on the horse. This enables a student to get the horse out before their lesson so their paid lesson time is spent learning new skills. I was pleasantly surprised at students who purchased and watched Part 1 could move quickly through skills that normally take several lessons. Part One of these classes go over safety, haltering, grooming, and horse psychology. It will also help a new horse owner get through some of the struggles of horse ownership and help develop the start of a great relationship with their horse. Text Kim at 303-941-2037 or email Prostable@aol.com to ask for information. We are also doing lessons, private and groups, as well as our summer camp program.
Email Kim at prostable@aol.com to receive an information/ registration form.

If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Start a game today and make it a part of your daily brain workout! The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. Is This the Year to Repaint Your Home? Offered by: Dan & Beth Cochran - The Haven Team, Keller Williams
T
here is nothing like a postcard-fresh paint job on your home to make it look and feel brand new again, but it is unlikely you will need a new coat of paint every year. So how do you know when it is time to repaint? Let’s walk through some of the biggest signs that it’s time to break out the buckets and brushes.
•
The Purpose of Paint
Although paint is nice to look at, and the color you choose definitely tells a story and lends a mood to the whole neighborhood, paint serves another very important function as a waterproof barrier. For many homes, especially those that are older, there is very little standing between the siding and the living space; this is why having a good paint really matters. Paint waterproofs your siding, and it helps prevent moisture from crossing from the outdoors inward. This, in turn, helps slow the damage time brings, like wood rot and damage from insects drawn to a moist environment. So even though it is a lovely thing to look at, paint is really one of your best defenses against the elements. Painting is not limited to wooden siding, though. You can also paint many types of siding considered non-paintable with the right kind of preparation and primer. So, if your house is covered in a horrific color of vinyl siding, all hope is not lost.
•
•
How to Tell It is Time to Paint
Knowing when it is time to paint your house is as much an art as a science. There are things you can look for that indicate the time is coming near, but you’ll also need to balance that with the expense and effort involved. Here are a few clear indicators to watch: • There is chipping paint. Most people know that chipping paint is a sign it is probably about time to start considering a paint job. But there is a fine line between a little bit of acceptable flaking and serious chipping. If

you are only noticing a few very small flakes falling off here and there, you should be working on picking a new color, but you don’t necessarily need to stop everything to get to painting. On the other hand, if big chips of paint are shedding off in multiple places, you have probably waited too long. Your waterproofing is failing. If your paint no longer keeps water from soaking into your siding, and instead it seems to be absorbing more water, your waterproofing has failed. Generally, you want water to bead up on your siding, then work its way down and onto the ground. If the paint is so far gone that your siding is soaking up rainwater, a paint job is needed ASAP. Waiting risks further, more serious damage. There is damage. Visible siding damage is a good sign it’s time to paint. After all, after you’ve fixed the holes in the siding created by woodpeckers, or by falling trees during storms, you’ll want to ensure the paint matches. Sometimes you can get away with just painting that side of the house, but large patches or siding replacements will usually not match existing paint, even if you use the same bucket. UV light breaks down the pigments quickly; just how quickly depends on the colors you have chosen. Are you ready for a change? You can paint your house just because you hate the color. It is totally legit and it can be a much easier process to just paint it than to wait and deal with damage or worn out paint. Just make sure you are preparing the surface just like you would for a coat of paint meant to be a repair so it will adhere properly. Or, if it is just time for a new home, we would love to be your Real Estate Professional. If you are curious to see how much your home is worth in this market, we would love to meet with you and give you a free Home Market Analysis. Please give us a call with any questions. A Little About Earwax Offered by: John Wilson, B.S., BC-HIS - Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center
A
bout once a week I get a call from someone who is having problems hearing and after a few questions find out that they stopped hearing after trying to clean their ears. Almost every one of these callers either used a cotton swab or some form of oil to try to clean their ears themselves. Sometimes the hearing is just muffled while other times they lose their hearing completely.
Ear wax is a natural substance that nearly everyone produces in their ear canal. It is usually made up of two substances that are secreted in the canal, sebaceous and cerumen, and dead skin. Other materials such a loose hairs and dust or dirt may also be present in ear wax. If everything is working normally the ear is self-cleaning and wax and debris can simply be wiped out of the bowl of the ear. Ear wax may build up and block the ear canal potentially causing hearing loss, infection, pain, tinnitus and vertigo or balance issues. Build up can be caused by excessively thick or sticky cerumen, small or narrow ear canals, or foreign objects pushing the wax back into the canal causing it to become impacted. To prevent impacted wax, follow this advice which has been around for ages: “Never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow.”

Professional removal of earwax is typically done by flushing, using physical instruments such as a curette or forceps, or suction. Over-thecounter solutions exist for softening and flushing wax, but should never be used until knowing exactly what is in the canal. Numerous tools and devices exist for self extraction of wax. Every time a new gadget for removing ear wax at home comes out, I get countless comments and questions from my patients. At one point I had a drawer full of worthless devices patients had given me that were purchased from ads they saw online, in magazines, or on television. Anytime someone finds out what I do they ask about how to clean ears. My response generally goes like this. “Everyone is different. The only way to know what is in the ear canal is to look. Yes, you can potentially clean it yourself depending on the amount, composition, and texture of the wax, and size and shape of the canal. However, you should never put anything in the ear to clean it until you actually know what is in it because ear infections, damage to the tympanic membrane and wax blockage can all have similar symptoms. Putting a foreign object in the canal can push wax in further and if there is a hole in the ear drum, fluids could enter the middle ear causing more severe problems.” In short, before I ever give specific advice about ear cleaning, I look in the ear canal.

Migraines - Not Just “All in Your Head” Offered by: Jessica Ahmed, LAc, DiplOM - Brighton Acupuncture
O
ne of the most common conditions I see in my acupuncture practice is pain, and in particular, migraines and other types of headaches. For the 29 million Americans suffering from migraines, these headaches are a debilitating part of life that can strike unexpectedly and ruin your day (or even your week!). Common symptoms include pain, irritability, light/noise sensitivity, nausea and vomiting. Medications may be effective at reducing the pain of migraines and other headaches, but there is so much you can do with natural medicine. Here are some tips, focusing on avoiding or reducing common triggers:
Diet: Avoid foods that may trigger your migraines, which commonly include dairy, wheat, soy, coffee/other caffeine, artificial sweeteners, sugar and alcohol, as well as skipping meals. Reduce Stress: Stress is a common trigger. Find productive ways to manage stress such as yoga, regular exercise, acupuncture and massage.. Acupuncture: Acupuncture decreases headaches by improving circulation, regulating hormones, reducing stress, alleviating muscular tension and relaxing the nervous system. Herbs: I use Chinese herbs for stubborn migraines that do not respond to acupuncture alone. In these cases, there may be an underlying imbalance (related to stress, hormones, etc.) that needs to be addressed in order for the headaches to resolve.

omebuyers are getting a lot of mixed messages this year. Interest rates are near record lows, but housing prices are still rising. So should you continue to rent or go ahead and take the plunge to buy? That depends a lot on both your needs and where you live. You may be wanting more space for home offices, play areas for kids, and more. You may not have to be close to work, which is one reason why there’s a current exodus out of expensive cities like New York City and San Francisco to suburbs or smaller towns. Another reason is cost. According to HomebuyingInstitute.com, home prices will almost certainly continue to rise through 2021, primarily due to limited supply and strong demand. Interestingly, the pandemic appeared to fuel the housing market. Realtor.com reported that median home listing prices rose 15.4 percent between January 2020 and January 2021. And, in the 50 largest U.S. metros homes sold 12 days faster in 2021. At the same time, the number of homes for sale in January was down 42.6% year over year. That means 443,000 fewer homes for sale which only exacerbates demand. Mortgage interest rates hit record lows in January 2021, with nowhere to go but stay the same or go up. You may want to take advantage of that to keep monthly payments low before housing prices rise further. Meanwhile, some home markets may level off, while others like Austin, Phoenix, and Denver are expected to heat up. If you’re considering buying or selling a home, call us at 303-905-8850. We’ll make sure you talk with someone who is knowledgeable about real estate and your neighborhood so you can make the decisions that are best for your family.
