here’s no denying that 2023 was a tough year for real estate. As the year ended and the Fed announced likely decreases in mortgage rates in the new year, the sighs of relief were almost palpable—especially for anyone who has been waiting for that news with the intention to buy as soon as the rates fall. But there’s another way to look at this news, and waiting for that rate drop may not garner the results you were hoping for or be your best strategy. We’ve all seen what happens when demand exceeds supply…price spikes and bidding wars with homes going fast, furious, and well over asking price, potentially wiping out any possible savings from the lower mortgage rate. So yes, while lower mortgage rates will most assuredly encourage more homeowners to list their homes, you will also have even more competition for available properties from buyers who can qualify for mortgages, and larger loans and have also been waiting for the rate drop before jumping in. A few things to think about as you strategize for the year ahead…If you can qualify now, before rates drop, you can always refinance once rates drop at least a percent. Perhaps you go with a smaller home than you ultimately want with the plan to use it as a steppingstone to your dream home. Or maybe your best strategy is taking these next six to twelve months to really hunker down and save to increase your down payment and potentially increase your income and buying power. A Person With A Purpose Never Despairs Offered by: Colorado Karate Club

iktor Frankl was a renowned Austrian psychologist who survived three horrendous years in four concentration camps during the Holocaust. As he recounts the most dehumanizing conditions of the camps, the back-breaking work, and harsh treatment from the guards, Frankl began to notice that there was something different about those who survived. They had a sense of purpose. Frankl, along with others, began to encourage others not to lose hope. He also began to write his memoir and developed a new kind of therapy. In his mind he would construct a future where he would publish his book, reunite with his wife, and many other things that gave him a purpose to keep on living. Although his wife had died at a nearby concentration camp in 1944, he was liberated a year later, and shortly after did publish his book titled “Man’s Search for Meaning” in which he explores how a person can find fulfillment and meaning, even under the most horrific circumstances. The book has been a bestseller in multiple languages since 1946. In a TV interview Frankl was asked, why does he think people despair? He answered that despair can be explained in a mathematical way as the equation: D=S-M, Despair is equal to Suffering without Meaning. A person who has found meaning in their life, even while suffering, can turn a predicament into a triumph. A person with a purpose never despairs. While we hope never to experience the horrors that Mr. Frankl went through, we can hope that through his experience and that of many others, we can find the courage to look beyond our immediate problems and find meaning and purpose in our daily activities, even if they may seem menial at the time.

ow that we’ve reached 2024, you might be thinking about your goals and hopes for the new year. But in addition to whatever personal resolutions you might make — volunteering, going to the gym more, learning a new language and others — why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few to consider: • Boost your retirement savings. If you can afford it, try to increase your contributions to your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. The more you put away in these accounts, the greater your chances of reaching your retirement goals. At a minimum, contribute enough to your 401(k) to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. And whenever your salary goes up, consider raising the amount you put in to your 401(k). • Reduce your debts. It’s not always easy to reduce your debts — but it’s worth the effort. The lower your debt load, the greater your monthly cash flow. So, look for ways to consolidate debts or find other, possibly more productive, ways of using credit. And if you truly can’t afford something that’s nonessential, don’t go into debt for it. “Live within your means” is an old piece of advice, but it’s just as valid now as ever. • Build an emergency fund. If you suddenly needed a major home or car repair, or received a large medical bill not fully covered by insurance, would you have the funds available? If not, you might be forced to dip into your retirement accounts or other long-term investments. To avoid this possibility, try to build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account that’s separate from the ones you use to meet your daily expenses. It can take a while to build such a fund, but if you make it a priority and contribute regular amounts each month, you can make good progress. • Avoid emotional decisions. Too many people overreact to events in the financial markets because they let their emotions get the better of them. If the market is temporarily down, it doesn’t mean you need to sell investments to “cut your losses” — especially if these investments still have good fundamentals and are still appropriate for your portfolio. It can be hard to ignore market volatility, but you’ll be better off if you focus on the long term and continue following an investment strategy that’s designed to meet your needs. • Review your goals. Over time, your goals may have changed. For example, while you once might have wanted to retire early, and planned for it, you may now find that you’d like to work a few more years. If that’s the case, you may also need to adjust your financial and investment strategies. • Revisit your estate plans. If you’ve married, divorced, remarried or added children to your family within the past few years, you may need to review the account titling and beneficiary designations on your 401(k) and other retirement assets, along with your estate-planning documents, such as your will or living trust. You might also need to revise these documents in other ways. Of course, you may not be able to tackle all these resolutions at one time, but if you can work at them throughout the year, you can potentially brighten your financial outlook in 2024 — and beyond. As
we begin a new year, I want to remind our readers of some important things. First, ear wax is normal and natural and not necessarily a sign of poor hygiene. For most people, wax simply needs to be wiped out of the bowl of the ear as it naturally works its way out of the ear canal. A cloth or even a Q-tip can be used to wipe it out of the bowl, but the Q-tip should not be inserted into the canal. For some people, wax does not move out of the canal as it should for reasons including the consistency of the wax, narrowness of ear canal, medications, or the use of ear plugs, hearing aids, or cotton swabs which push the wax deeper into the canal. If wax does not properly migrate out of the canal it can cause hearing loss. The problem is commonly exacerbated when wax is impacted or when water gets trapped when swimming or bathing. Use caution with putting ANYTHING (including cleaning solutions, hydrogen peroxide, oils, etc.) without knowing exactly what is actually happening in the ear. A sudden change in hearing with discomfort could be a sign of wax, but it could also be the result of a ruptured eardrum from excessive middle ear pressure. Putting a liquid in the ear canal when there is a hole in the eardrum can lead to bigger problems. A video otoscope can be used to show you exactly what is happening inside of your ear. Avoid sticking foreign objects including bobby pins, car keys, cotton swabs, paper clips, or pen caps into your ear canal. Second, treating even mild hearing loss can increase mental focus. People spend billions of dollars on their health with much of that spent on trying to have more energy. Most people do not know that when the brain tries to understand, focus, or organize information, it uses energy. When a person cannot see clearly, they often struggle to understand the world around them. Recently, a woman related a story about how she struggles to hear and all of her senses seem dull
when she is not wearing her eye glasses or contacts. As soon as she puts on her glasses, all of her senses improve. This is an example of significant energy being put into trying to see, but being unable to focus. When that happens, less energy is available for the other functions the brain performs. The same is true with hearing. With even a mild hearing loss, more mental energy is spent to understand and make sense of sounds than with normal hearing. Trying to understand in a noisy environment uses even more energy. Struggling to hear creates mental and physical fatigue. Simply wearing hearing aids decreases listening effort and listening fatigue, and allows more energy to be available for other mental and physical functions. Third, long term cognitive and physical health is tied to better hearing. Thanks to increased education and awareness, more and more of the tens of millions of people with hearing loss are getting help sooner than ever before. These individuals report greater satisfaction with hearing devices than for those who wait to get help. Long term outcomes for individuals with hearing loss show that the rate of brain shrinkage related to hearing loss decreases as soon as hearing aids start to be worn on a consistent basis. Yet most people do not treat hearing loss, often waiting until it is too late to achieve optimal results. Untreated hearing loss is the largest preventable factor that contributes to dementia. Treating hearing loss decreases the likelihood of developing dementia. If you or someone you know struggles with hearing, we would love to help. you have a certificate of deposit (CD) that is maturing soon, it’s time to make a decision. Your CD has been collecting interest for months or years, helping you to get closer to your financial goals. Now you need to decide whether to roll it over to another CD, deposit it into another account, cash it out and spend it – or invest it. Weigh your options Before you decide what to do, it helps to consider all your options first. Be aware that your bank or credit union may rollover your CD automatically at the end of the term – unless you tell them not to. And, it’s possible their new interest rate could be lower. The bank or credit union is required to notify you in advance before the CD matures, but you should scope out your options in advance. You’ll have a grace period – generally one to two weeks – to act on your decision, but it helps to have a plan first. Here are options to consider: • Let your bank renew your CD. This may be the easiest option – but not necessarily the best, depending on the rates and terms. If you do decide to renew and the rates are good, you may want to take advantage of the grace period and add more funds to your CD. • Withdraw your CD funds and get a different CD. You can search the internet for the best CD rates available, and compare the rates listed on NerdWallet, Bankrate, Forbes, Investopedia, US News, SmartAsset, and other sites. The interest rates you see may prompt you to try a new bank or credit union or stick with your current one. • Withdraw and spend your CD funds. Maybe you’d like to buy a new car or take a well-earned vacation in the next month or two. If that’s the case, you might want to move your CD funds into a checking or savings account during the grace period so it will be more accessible.

• Move your funds to a brokerage account. If you’re willing to accept more risk for potentially higher returns, this may be your best option. When—and why—talking to an advisor about your CD might be the best solution CDs are extremely low-risk products and are insured by the FDIC (if they are held with an FDIC-insured institution). There is also no market risk with a CD, and their interest rates climbed into the double digits in the 1980s, when inflation rates were also high. CD terms usually range from three months to five years and can be a great choice for someone who wants to lock-in an investment for a set amount of time, with set returns. There is a downside, though, if you need to access your CD funds before maturity. Early withdrawal penalties for CDs vary by institution and are typically calculated as a set period of interest earned, such as 90 days or six months. But if you’re investing for the long term, your best option may be talking to an advisor and moving your maturing CD funds into a brokerage account. A Forbes article from September 2022 pointed out that CDs were paying above 3% in a high-interest environment, but the historic annualized average return of the S&P was 11.88%.1 So, while CDs may be considered a safer investment, they typically reward you with less of a return over a longer period of time. How to avoid a late enrollment penalty(LEP) for Part D! Offered by: Headwaters Health and Wealth LLC - Lisa Asmussen
W
hen you are first eligible for Medicare whether at age 65 or due to disability prior to age 65, Part D becomes available to you. At this point you have 63 days from the date of getting Part A or Part B of Medicare to get Part D prescription drug coverage. Part D may be delayed if you have coverage from your current work through a group health plan with a group of 20 or more members. A delay is also permitted if you are on your spouses group health plan again it should be for 20 or more members. If you do not have coverage and you do not enroll in a plan that offers Part D from a private insurance company, within the time limitation, then at some point in the future if you would ever want to get prescription drug insurance, Part D, you would have a penalty for all of the months you did not have creditable coverage. Often after enrolling in Medicare Part B upon retirement and signing up for coverage a letter will be sent to anyone that signed up for Part D coverage but is after their initial eligibility date. It explains that you must validate your previous coverage to avoid a penalty. These forms are important and must be followed with communication to the insurance company to avoid this type of lifelong penalty. We assist with understanding the deadlines, responding to inquiries and providing reliable direction to avoid the Part D penalty.

hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season. It’s my favorite time of the year because I get a little time to rest. Now that we are into the new year, there are a few things to remember. January 1 - March 31 is the General Enrollment Period for Medicare. This is a time for anyone who is not on Medicare, but is eligible, to enroll. If you delayed getting on Medicare because you didn’t want to pay the premium or you were using VA benefits and thought that would be enough, you are able to enroll in Medicare during this timeframe. Remember, you will likely have a Late Enrollment Penalty for delaying enrollment in Part B. Remember, this is for people who are not on an Employer Health Plan. If you delayed enrollment in Part B and are worried about the Late Enrollment Penalty, please note that the longer you put off joining Part B, the larger the penalty grows. Please call me to help understand how this penalty works. The first quarter of the year is also the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. This is a time when folks who started the year on a Medicare Advantage Plan can make a one-time plan change. Here are some examples of why you might take advantage of this time period. If you switched plans and your MD no longer takes the plan you switched to, you can change to another Medicare Advantage Plan that your MD does accept. If you have heard about another Medicare Advantage Plan that has benefits which are appealing to you, you can make a change. You can also leave a Medicare Advantage Plan and go to Original Medicare, add a Prescription Drug Plan, and if you’d like, also add a Medicare Supplement. A lot of times we think we are stuck in our plan but there is a little bit of grace for Medicare Advantage Plan enrollees in this first quarter of the year. If you have questions, please reach out. ow that fall has come to an end and we have settled into school routines, let’s talk sleep. Sleep is essential for early brain development from infancy through adolescence. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that infants get 12-16 hours of sleep (including naps), toddlers should be getting 11-14 hours (including naps), preschoolers should get 10-13 hours (including naps), children between 6 and 13 yearsold get 9-11 hours of sleep and teens age 13-18 years should aim for 6-12 shours per night. What can parents do: • Keep to a consistent bedtime schedule and routine. • Avoid screentime one hour before bedtime. • Be active during the day. • Keep your child’s bed a place for sleep and not a place for play. The AAP recommends the 4 B’s before bed: Bath, Brush teeth, Book, Bedtime. Baths/showers are soothing to children and hygienic. Brushing, also hygienic, after the last meal or bottle cues the child that it’s time for bed. Books are great for bonding, increasing vocabulary, and a good replacement for screentime. Bedtime: Once you’ve set the stage for bathing, brushing, and books to signal bedtime, you should encourage your child to fall asleep independently at an appropriate bedtime that works for your family.

least 1 in 5 children have a diagnosable mental health condition. When these conditions are left unaddressed, this can lead to a decrease in quality of life or worse. Rates of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents continue to rise. Suicide continues to be a leading cause of death in adolescents in most states. It is well known that early access to mental health services makes the greatest impact on these challenges. Yet, access to mental health services often seems to be beyond reach. Many barriers to these services exist such as insurance coverage, distance to a mental health provider, and time, just to name a few. Premier Pediatrics has decided to take on this challenge by doing what we can to make mental health services more readily available to those who need it. We offer many services such as “telehealth” or virtual visits with a licensed therapist/counselor or a psychiatrist at our office or in your home. We also have partnership with other mental health counselors in our community who can provide much needed emotional support. Through our partnership with many mental health providers, most can receive mental health services that will be covered by their insurance or at an affordable rate. We are committed to eliminating the barriers to mental health by maintaining these programs and exploring other new options.
