O
ne of the feelings that surfaces at the start of a new calendar year is the need to create a better year than the last. How can we lessen the prior year’s adversities and achieve the goals we set as New Year’s resolutions. Often times, daily life brings us back to doing things in a similar way as the prior year just to keep the home fires burning! I’ve been asked fairly frequently if I’m going to retire. The answer is “Yes, of course, sometime.” How and why are good questions to ask ourselves when it comes to rationalizing what we do. In my case, preparing each issue of The Brighton Buzz is a labor of love because the connection with advertisers, learning more about our community, meeting new business owners and finding out about their hopes, dreams and visions keep my mind learning all the time. It also is very rewarding to bring these resources to the readers in our distribution while growing a better sense of community Maybe it’s hard to see where the passion comes from in your daily endeavors, but, when that becomes obvious, it lights the fire to your motivation and captures the interest of those working around you. Our Brighton Buzz designer, Mario Waller, has covered these pages with his inspired view of our advertisers’ offerings. A heartfelt thank you to Mario for giving his all to each issue. edicare has so many rules about timing of when you can and cannot do things. Right now is another one of those time periods when you CAN do something. It’s called the Open Enrollment Period (OEP). During the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, Jan 1 - March 31 each year, you can do a couple things. The first is if you are over 65 and not covered by an employee group health plan and not on Medicare, you can add Medicare Part B. You may already have Part B in place but some people do not enroll in Medicare right when they turn 65. If you are someone who has waited to get on Medicare, this is the time when you should apply to get on Medicare. When you enroll in Medicare during the OEP for the first time after age 65, your Medicare Part B will start July 1 of the year you complete your Medicare enrollment. Also, if you are enrolling in Medicare late, you will have a Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP). This is a monthly fee that will be added to your Medicare Part B premium for the rest of your life. They add 10% of the current Part B premium for each 12 month period you delay Medicare Part B. The other thing you can do during the OEP is make a change to your Medicare Advantage Plan. If you started January 1 on a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can make a one time change to either (1) another Medicare Advantage Plan or (2) go back to Original Medicare and pick up a Prescription Drug plan. If you do go back to Original Medicare, you can also apply for a Medicare Supplement. If you have questions about your specific situation, please let me know. I can help. 720-626-6524.

The IRS holds the refunds until mid-February to protect against identity theft & refund fraud. • The due date this year is Monday April 18th, 2022. (For those affected by the recent wildfires the due date has been extended to May 16th, 2022.) ho knew a month ago, when I wrote my January article on looking forward for 2022, that within just a few days the housing market outlook would change so drastically, not only for 2022, but for years beyond. The horrific devastation from the Marshall fire destroyed 1,084 structures, including nearly 1,000 homes, making it the most destructive fire in our state’s history. It goes without saying that our hearts are with all those affected by this tragedy, and it is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from the surrounding communities. Putting differences aside when it really matters is what is at the heart of community. The sense of urgency to mobilize in the wake of a tragedy of epic proportions such as this is critical. The stark reality is that no matter how much “we (as a community and society) prepare”, it’s never going to be enough, or happen soon enough, nor in a totally organized or calm fashion, if for no other reason than the sheer magnitude of total loss. Homes weren’t shattered, there aren’t pieces to pick up—only ashes and dust. In the blink of an eye, nearly 1,000 families were forced into a state of complete homelessness, with literally nothing other than the clothes they were wearing at that moment—no time to even gather important papers, medications, a change of underwear. It’s an inconceivable situation, and the trauma from that experience encompasses more than the obvious physical loss. Where and how does one start? The recovery process is not weeks or months, it’s years. It’s going to impact every one of us, not just those directly affected. effrey is about 12 years old when he walks into our Karate school for the first time accompanied by his parents. Jeffrey seems happy but shy, his eyes scan the room from side to side as he answers a few questions. How old are you? What do you enjoy doing? Etc. He seems excited about Karate, but at the same time is reluctant to try something different and new. Reassuring him, I welcome Jeffrey into the dojo and run a few Karate drills with him, he loosens up as his eyes seem to light up. I can see that a spark has ignited within him. Fast forward just a few months later and Jeffrey, now a yellow belt, has fully embraced his Karate training. He is slowly tackling all new challenges as he realizes that he has the potential to do very well when he puts his mind to it. He knows by now that many things are not easy, actually they may seem pretty hard at first, but through practice, hard work, and dedication, he can master the techniques, combinations, and the physical work that is required of him. While everyone develops at their own pace, and acquiring self confidence is a process of self discovery, it is always amazing for me to see the change our students experience over time. Quite often we see the once timid kid now leading the warm ups and volunteering to demonstrate a technique or combination in front of the whole class. I think that many times we believe that confidence and timidity are things that people are born with, but in fact, confidence is a skill that can be developed through practice and repetition. I know that as a parent I may instinctively wish to save my children

from the difficulties of life, shield them from the problems and challenges I may have encountered myself. However I know that adversity forms the strongest characters and most resilient mindsets. So I always encourage my children to try to resolve any challenges on their own, before I would come to the rescue, if at all. By resolving things on their own, they become more self-sufficient, and gain the confidence needed to face other obstacles in life. These lessons I apply to our Karate students as well. very ranch has a story. Maybe you’ve heard our story before or perhaps you are a new friend and are curious about the history of our ranch. Either way, we think it’s a story worth telling again. It’s a story of our family; hard-working ranchers dedicating their lives to the dream set upon their hearts. It’s the legacy that was left to us, and that we will leave to the generations to come. The Hall family has been providing Premium Colorado beef to family and friends for quite some time. In 1916, Charlie and Laura Hall, along with their two young children, homesteaded 160 acres in southeast Colorado between La Junta and Trinidad. They built their first house, a one-room dwelling that later became the chicken house. Then they built a three-room house where they raised seven children. Through hard work and determination, through the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, they were able to stay and grow the ranch as most other homesteaders moved away. In 1948 their son Lloyd and Edith, his wife, bought a neighboring ranch. Later, they bought Charlie and Laura’s ranch from the six brothers and sisters increasing the ranch size to over 20,000 acres! Good beef has always been a luxury at the Hall ranch. We didn’t always have lots of things but we always had good beef. Quite often friends and family would come for dinner and the main course was always the same—beef. It has always been what’s for dinner at the Hall ranch. Our guests would always appreciate the good steaks, pot roasts or grilled burgers. Some of them began to ask if we would feed a beef for them. We have been providing premium Colorado beef for friends and family ever since. 104 years later, now into the 3rd, 4th and 5th generation, Monk and Lynda Hall are carrying on the family tradition of providing Premium Colorado beef to friends and family. It has been somewhat difficult to do some of the things that we routinely did pre-covid. My hope is that if you have had difficulty staying active that you consider the long-term effects of maintaining cardiovascular health. As we approach spring consider getting those appointments scheduled for primary care providers and specialists. I continue to hear that they are booking further out for appointments, so taking a few minutes to get scheduled to take care of yourself is one way to love yourself. Other ways we can love ourselves might be changes in eating habits. If you have veered away from eating as well as you did before the holidays or feel the need to adjust your diet to include more healthful options, now is a time to consult with your doctor and implement changes. Small changes that you can make daily like lowering caffeine and salt intake are worthy steps in the right direction. Are you getting enough heart healthy exercise? If you made a resolution and are making progress toward your goals, congratulations!! If you still haven’t tackled fitness the way you would like, looking for ways to adjust your daily routine to include more exercise is an area you can focus on. The inviting weather we will have in a couple more months will be best enjoyed if you are fit enough to participate in your favorite outdoor activities. any parents are wondering how to safely manage screen time and media usage for their children during these unprecedented times. While using screens has become more necessary for remote learning and connecting with family members, here are some general tips to keep your kids safe and healthy. 1. Children younger than 18 months should avoid screen media except for video chatting with family. 2. Children age 2 to 5 should limit screen use to 1 hour per day, and choose only high-quality programs. 3. Children over age 6 should have consistent limits on the type of media allowed and the time spent using media. Children should not sleep with electronic devices in their bedrooms, and should avoid exposure to screens for at least 1 hour before bed. 6. Take frequent breaks to avoid eye strain and dry eyes. Eye doctors recommend the 20/20/20 rule: look away from the screen every 20 minutes, focus on an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds. Children should also walk away from the screen for at least 10 minutes every hour. 7. Communicate openly with your children about online safety and treating others with respect online. 8. Designate media-free times for your family, such as during dinnertime.

Stephen F. Cardos, M.D Celebrating His Retirement Offered by: Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.
A
fter more than 46 years of dedicated service to the Brighton Community, Pediatrician Dr. Stephen Cardos is retiring. Brighton City Council proclaimed Jan 18th, 2022 as Dr. Stephen Cardos Day, in honor of his service, to the residents of Brighton. Being originally from New York, where he earned his medical degree he served in the US Air Force as Major and Chief of Pediatrics in Omaha Nebraska. Dr. Cardos opened Brighton Pediatrics in 1975 after being recruited from Brighton Community Hospital. He served as the only Pediatrician in Adams County for 20 years. Over the years, Dr. Cardos was President of the board for House and Neighborly Services, He served on the board at Platte valley Medical Center, He was one of the Founding Fathers of Almost Home where he served as Board of Directors for 20 years and served in many other Community Organizations. He plans to spend his free time traveling, ballroom dancing with his wife Peggy, playing classical guitar and spending more time with his family. Thank you Dr. Cardos for your service to our community. We wish you a wonderful retirement!

innitus, or ringing in the ears, is generally defined as a sound that is perceived by an individual that does not come from a source outside of the body. Millions of people experience tinnitus. The cause for each individual varies. Tinnitus is a type of warning to the individual experiencing it that something is not working correctly in the body. High blood pressure, vascular issues, cranial trauma, toxicity, chemical imbalances and hearing loss are all potential causes of tinnitus. Recently, many people who have recovered from Covid-19 have reported new or increased tinnitus symptoms. At Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center, we strive to help each individual better understand what may be causing their tinnitus and help find solutions that lead to relief. Studies from the University of Nottingham indicate that the sooner an individual treats their tinnitus, the more likely treatments are to be effective, and the better long-term results will be. Individuals who have successfully treated tinnitus have reported increased ability to concentrate, increased energy, less fatigue, improved sleep, less irritability and more patience.
The impact of tinnitus on an individual can range from a minor annoyance to an overwhelming burden. Determining the cause is the first step to finding relief. For some, the problem can be as simple as wax buildup in the ear canal, and in that case having the wax professionally removed can solve the problem. Others who may have a medical condition may find relief by working with their doctor to change medications or dosages. Individuals who have experienced physical trauma may find relief through chiropractic care. For many, treating hearing loss can lead to immediate relief from tinnitus. Ninety percent of individuals with tinnitus have an associated hearing loss, and most individuals with tinnitus have a hearing loss that they are not even aware of. Often, a person will report that they cannot seem to hear or understand people speaking because the tinnitus interferes or blocks out other sounds. This perception is quite common; however, in these cases the hearing loss is the cause of the tinnitus as opposed to the tinnitus causing the inability to hear or understand. Most of the time, simply treating the hearing loss will lead to diminished tinnitus and often will get rid of the tinnitus completely.

City of Brighton launches website redesign Offered by: City of Brighton Communications
T
o kick off the new year, the City of Brighton recently launched a website redesign that is easier to navigate, more efficient and visually-engaging for the public to use. The new www.brightonco.gov website features a modern look and user-centered layout focused on connecting city services and resources for community stakeholders, while also incorporating public input during a recent website survey. “For many in our community, the city’s website is the first step to get the information they need,” said Kristen Chernosky, Director of Communications and Engagement. “The hope is the redesign will create a more user-friendly experience for those individuals to get the answers and resources they need. This reflects our commitment to making that online experience as accessible as possible.” All of the existing features and services of the former website, like paying a utility bill and reporting a concern, are still available on brightonco.gov. The city’s last redesign was launched in 2018. The city receives approximately 550,000 viewers and 1 million page views a year on average. National average 30-year fixed rate mortgage interest rates have been at or near record lows for a decade. They should stay low forever, right? Economists predict that rapid inflation is among the reasons the Federal Reserve will start raising overnight borrowing rates to banks, which will, in turn, raise interest rates to consumers and businesses when they borrow money. Inflation is measured as the annual rise in the cost of living. When inflation rises more than 2%, there are numerous consequences. Goods cost more, causing workers to seek higher wages. This can cause uncertainty for businesses that may slow their investments down as a means of demonstrating caution. Interest rates go up to increase borrowing costs in order to slow down consumer consumption. Mortgage interest rates will increase, and things can change quickly for homebuyers and sellers. Consumer behavior during inflationary periods is unpredictable. Some consumers decide to pull back and not make new purchases, while others leap in to make purchases before prices go up any further. This is one of the reasons why the demand for housing is driving up home prices. Interest rates have been unnaturally low for over a decade, so the anticipation of rising interest rates has some homebuyers scurrying to get in a home before home prices go any higher. Eventually, homebuyers reach their pain threshold and the market for homes can slow down suddenly and dramatically. Once demand ebbs, prices begin to come down. Borrowing rates won’t come down as long as inflation is higher than 2% to 3%, but eventually, low market activity will cause borrowing rates to fall. Lower housing prices coupled with lower interest rates are irresistible and homebuyers will flock back to the market. The ebb and flow in demand and affordability are constantly changing. To illustrate changing mortgage interest rates and their impact on your monthly payment, consider what a difference even a small rise in interest rates means to you. If you take out a mortgage for $400,000 with a benchmark fixed-rate 30year mortgage with a commitment rate of 3%, your principal and interest payment would be $1,686.42. Assuming you make all 360 total payments, you’ll pay $207,109.81 in interest over the term of the loan. That’s $400,000 you’ve paid back plus 207,109.81 in interest for a total of $607,109.81. If interest rates go up, say to 3.25%, your payment will be $1,740.83 and the total interest you’ll pay will be $226,697.10. With just a quarter point rise in interest rates, that’s a difference of $54.41 more per month and an additional $19,587.29 in interest. What if interest rates go up as economists predict? If you’re interested in buying a home, mortgage rates are unlikely to stay low much longer, but you have to weigh that against current home prices and whether or not you want to take the risk that they’ll rise further or whether it’s better to wait and see what happens. Even if the value of your home goes down because of market fluctuations, eventually it will recover and hopefully deliver a profit to you when you sell.
