the beginning of the year, which is time for our students to create their vision boards. We always get some very cool and inspiring boards with what our students envision for themselves in the future. There’s pictures of nice houses, pickup trucks, black belts, doctors, police officers, places to travel, etc. We love to spark our student’s imaginations for a wonderful future, so that they can begin to build it now. As Albert Einstein said: “Imagination is everything, it is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” However, there’s always a student or two who would rather skip the assignment and ask: “Sensei, is this required? Do I have to do it?” After hearing this a few times in the past, I decided to give the students a different perspective on why we do Vision Boards, since it is, in fact, not mandatory. Last week, when a student asked that question at the end of class, I answered: “No, the Vision Board is not mandatory, one can always choose to be mediocre. Do you know what mediocre means?” Shaking his head “no”, I continued, “Mediocre means that we can choose to do the minimum, just enough to get by. Some people are okay with that, but you must know that it is your choice. Today, you can choose to be extraordinary, you can choose to want more for yourself and your family. To be someone who can help and inspire others. If you want to be great, it takes work, it takes time, but first it takes imagination. You have to construct your future in your mind first. Then put it down in words, then in drawings and pictures, then bring them all together on a poster board that you can look at every day. It will remind you of your goals and purpose, so you can work towards those every day.” He smiled, said, “Okay”, and left. We shall see… The reverse psychology doesn’t always work, but it remains true. Through my half a century of life I have encountered many amazing individuals, men and women who by their discipline, ingenuity, and courage, have achieved great things in their personal and professional lives. I have also met mediocre people who are “just fine” with what they are and have, and yet I’ve met others (the under-achievers) who are totally unhappy about everything but will do nothing to change it. The difference is that the first group realized that being great is a choice, one that requires work and sacrifice, a sacrifice not everyone is willing to make. So today, as in every day, NO, you don’t have to read that book, you don’t have to exercise, you don’t have to attend the seminar, take the class, put the extra effort at work, school, or your training, and no, you don’t have to create a vision board. hen many people think about investing, the first thing that comes to mind is the stock market. And that’s not surprising, as the rise and fall of stock prices is constantly in the news. But if you’re going to achieve your financial goals, you may well need to look beyond stocks and include fixedincome investments in your portfolio.
Fixed-income investments offer three important benefits: • Income – When you invest in fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, Treasury securities and certificates of deposit (CDs), you receive regular income in the form of interest payments. And you continue to receive this income until your investment matures or you sell it, no matter what’s happening in the financial markets. Of course, the income you can receive from fixed-income investments will always depend on the interest rates at which these investments were issued. But if you own a mix of long-term and short-term fixed-income investments, you can gain some protection against fluctuating rates. When market rates are low, you can get greater income from your longer-term bonds, which typically — although not always — pay higher rates. And when market rates rise, you can benefit by reinvesting the proceeds from your shorter-term bonds. • Diversification – If you were only to own stocks, or stock-based mutual funds, your portfolio would be susceptible to higher risks, especially with market downturns. But you may be able to reduce the impact of market volatility by adding fixed-income investments to your holdings. Bond prices often move in a different direction from stocks, so if stock prices are falling, you might find that the value of your bonds is rising. You can also diversify within the fixed-income portion of your portfolio by owning a mix of corporate and Treasury bonds, as well as CDs, just to name a few. • Stability – As mentioned, you will always receive interest payments from your bonds if you hold them until maturity. But if you wanted to sell your bonds before they mature, you could get more, or less, than what you originally paid for them. When market interest rates rise, the price of your current bonds will likely fall, as no one will pay you the full price for them when they get newer ones that pay more — this is what’s known as interest-rate risk. Conversely, when market rates fall, the prices of your current bonds will probably rise. But here’s the key point to remember: Bond prices generally don’t fluctuate as much as stock prices. In other words, bonds are typically less volatile than stocks. Consequently, owning bonds can add diversification to your portfolio. And to maximize the stabilizing effects of bonds, you may want to stick with high-quality bonds rated as “investment grade” by independent bond-rating agencies. How much of your portfolio should consist of fixed-income investments? There’s no one right answer for everyone. And over time, your interest in these types of investments may well change — for example, as you near retirement, you may want to consider shifting some of your growth-oriented investments into income-producing ones, though you’ll still need some growth potential to keep up with inflation. In any case, the combination of income, diversification and stability provided by bonds and similar securities should be compelling enough for you to find a place for them in your investment mix. aking hard decisions often takes a lot of time, energy and sacrifice. For big decisions or big changes, some people need to reach a breaking point or to “hit rock bottom.” Others have to experience some form of turning point or “aha moment.” Treating hearing loss can be one of those major decisions. Even with numerous negative mental, physical and social consequences, most people wait seven to ten years to treat hearing loss from the time they are diagnosed. Over the past 17 years patients have shared countless reasons why they finally decided to get hearing aids. Here are a couple of memorable examples. One was a rancher who would drive from Moffat County to have me take care of his hearing aids. One day he came in after lightning struck nearby, knocked him unconscious and fried his hearing aids. As we talked about his options, which in this case were to fix his hearing aids, get new aids, or just do nothing, he said that the latter was not an option. He related that he had to have hearing aids so he could converse with his grandchildren and told me that was why he finally got them. He said he had been a rancher his whole life and was tough enough to handle anything. Having hearing loss was not something that bothered him and besides, hearing aids were expensive. His family had brought up the subject of his hearing loss many times and he always dismissed them. Then one day his son and granddaughter came to visit him. While they were talking his son stopped him and said, “You didn’t understand a word she just said, did you?” He then realized his granddaughter had become upset by his responses to her. He admitted he hadn’t understood anything she said and had responded generically just to placate her. He looked down and saw how sad and dejected she was that he had disregarded what she said. He shared she later said she didn’t think grandpa cared about her or think she was important any more. He
said he was heartbroken, and that was the moment he realized how important it was for him to actually be able to hear what she said and vowed to get help for his hearing loss. Not long after that experience, I had two people come in to get hearing aids within a few months of each other for the same frightening reason. Both had interactions with rattlesnakes that they could not hear due to high-frequency hearing loss. The first had been hiking with his dog and the dog ran off the trail a couple of feet into the brush. He could not figure out what the dog was doing as he could hear nothing out of the ordinary but then the dog yelped and started whining and running toward him. At first, he did not realize what was wrong, but the dog was obviously hurt and acting funny. He found two small puncture wounds on its head and rushed the dog to the vet. Fortunately, the vet realized based on the dog’s symptoms that it was likely bitten by a rattlesnake. The diagnosis was confirmed after the vet administered antivenom and the dog survived. The second shared how he was walking up a trail and could see a snake sunning itself on the trail. He continued to walk toward it and as he approached, he could see the tail of the snake shaking, but could not hear the rattle. Both men were found to have high-frequency hearing loss and did get hearing aids, which not only helped them be able to hear rattles but also to understand speech more clearly and also hear better in noisy environments. While not every situation is as dramatic as these three, every individual with hearing loss has to go through a process that causes them to make the decision to get help. It is important to know waiting too long for the “aha moment’ decreases the long-term effectiveness of getting help. The first step is having a hearing test to determine the nature of the hearing problem.

Emotional stress and trauma is carried in the mind and the body. So that’s where we start. We will spend a bit of time discussing the specific stress you want to deal with; then I will identify where in your body it is located (in addition to being in your mind - because it’s always hanging out there). As you bring this stress or trauma to the surface, I will gather it up and direct it out of the mind and body. Results: This process will leave you more clear-headed, light-hearted, less reactionary, and will provide a sense of peace and calm within you. Many experience positive changes in their health as well, as the body has released the energetic blockages that are associated with stagnation and pain in the body. Please note: these sessions can be intense, as we are working through deep emotions. You will probably be quite tired afterward – so try to schedule your appointment on a day when you can return home and rest. Also, if we are focusing on long term trauma, more than one session will be needed so we can be mindful of your capacity to confront, release and heal the powerful memories and emotions we are working through. old weather means busy Pediatricians’ offices and a lot of absences from school. We are not sure why some viruses thrive and multiply better in cold weather, but it may be because people are spending more time crowded indoors, and because some viruses spread better when the air is dry. Four important respiratory viruses to know about are RSV, rhinovirus, parainfluenza (specifically type 1), influenzas (A and B) RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), which usually peaks in January and February, is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (not to be confused with bronchitis). RSV is so common that almost all children have had at least one infection with RSV by the time they reach two years of age. Many children just have a runny nose and cough but, mostly in children under two years of age, it can work its way down the respiratory tract into smaller airways called bronchioles, causing wheezing, and breathing difficulty. Rhinovirus, the “common cold” virus is present throughout the year, but peaks in the cold weather months. Almost half of all upper respiratory infections are caused by rhinoviruses. In addition to the common cold, they can also sometimes cause bronchiolitis (second most common cause after RSV). Parainfluenza (especially type 1) is the most common cause of croup in young children and peaks in the fall. Croup presents with a distinctive cough that sounds like a seal barking, a hoarse voice, and sometimes a distinctive sound called stridor with breathing in. Influenza occurs from late fall to early spring, usually peaking in February. Common symptoms include fever, chills, headache, achy muscles, cough, stuffy nose, and sore throat. Influenza may lead to secondary bacterial infections including ear infections and pneumonia. ack of supply in the resale market is favorably impacting new home sales. In September 2023, the pace of new home sales was up 33.9% year over year to a seasonally-adjusted rate of 759,00 units.
