we navigate the excitement and frenzy of the holiday season it’s nice to pause for a few moments to take a deep breath and truly appreciate the blessings we have, especially in the tumultuous world in which we currently live. It can be challenging to stay grounded and positive with the constant onslaught of news headlines and I find that acknowledgement of the blessings, no matter how small, helps to provide balance and strength. On
December 25th, billions of people around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Traditions and customs from different cultures and societies take place. One common element of Christmas traditions is light. Some customs include lighting candles, others include hanging lights around homes and on trees, and a star is often set on top of Christmas trees. It is no mistake that the holiday falls just after the shortest, darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, commemorating the beginning of longer days and increasing light. Another holiday, Hanukkah, is celebrated in December and is also a celebration of light as the oil used to light candles miraculously lasted longer than it should have. Without light, we are unable to see. With insufficient light we are unable to see clearly. Recently my daughter and I were having a conversation and she asked how hearing aids worked to help people hear. After I answered, she responded, “so hearing aids are like glasses for the ears.” I explained to her that in some ways that is true, but there were other major differences. While hearing aids collect acoustic energy and amplify specific frequencies to make sounds audible, glasses collect, bend and focus light energy for individual eyeballs to make things look clearer. Within the past 2 months I witnessed two different individuals struggling with vision tests. My son and I were at the DMV and dozens of people stood at the same stripe and read letters from a variety of different signs. Most were successful either with or without glasses. The most memorable was the young man who could not correctly read any letters and had been completely unaware that he had a vision problem. The other instance involved a man who was having a CDL physical. He was unable to read any of the letters and was required to see an eye doctor. A couple of weeks later, he returned wearing glasses and easily passed the test.
I then heard him say, “I had no idea that things were not supposed to be blurry.” This is also often the case when it comes to hearing as many people with hearing loss do not realize or have forgotten how things are supposed to sound. Most people with hearing loss do not realize what they are missing. Witnessing someone start hearing better, whether it is from getting new hearing aids or having a blockage in the ear canal removed, can be very interesting. Some people are delighted that they can hear things they were missing. Some people are irritated by sounds that they are not used to and ask “am I supposed to hear that?” or “do you hear that?” I then get to explain that, yes, I hear those sounds, and then, that it takes time for the brain to adapt to hearing new sounds, much like when a person has to adjust to new eyeglasses. Society has benefited greatly from the invention of both eyeglasses and hearing aids. Being able to hear and see clearly allows for more freedom and independence and better long-term health. Many of the negative stereotypes from wearing glasses have disappeared and the same is happening with hearing loss as hearing aid technology improves and more people start wearing them at a younger age. If you or someone you love is having problems with hearing clearly, we encourage you to seek help for the benefit of yourself and those around you so you can more fully enjoy life and light through the holidays and into the coming year. very so often someone walks up to me and asks, “Hey Sensei, how long does it take to get a black belt?” Tongue in cheek I reply, “with my Amazon Prime, if I order within 45 minutes, probably by Wednesday before 8 pm.” Then I follow it up by: “Now, BECOMING a black belt takes much longer, somewhere between 5 to 8 years of consistent training…” I joke like that because I want my students to realize that in order to achieve more, they must become more. Whether it is in Karate, at school, home, or work (or almost anything else that matters), to get to the next level, there must be that personal growth. On the other hand, we all know there are some folks out there always looking for a shortcut in life, and whenever someone mentions something about some shortcut, I greatly discourage it. You may get to your goal sooner or easier, but in the long run, it will come back to bite you in the rear, simply because you failed to first become the person that was needed to fill those shoes. It seems to me that this is one of the reasons why many lottery winners are broke again within a few years from their “lucky break”, they never grew (as a person) into their fortune. So, they find themselves suddenly rich, but with a poor person’s mentality. Jim Rohn puts it this way when he talks about reaching and growing toward your goals: “Whatever good things we build, end up building us.” Success then, is a constant process of growth and achievement, of achievement and growth. In Karate, for example, students will work for years, developing not only their technique, but in the process, exercising perseverance, self control, discipline, courtesy, and much more. Through that rewarding journey, he or she will become, and earn, a black belt; and from there, will again renew the process of further growth, perfecting their art, and themselves. But whether you are a martial artist or not, when you set your goals for the next few weeks, months, and years, remember to ask yourself: “In order to have, be, earn, or do, who must I first become… today, in six months, and in five years?” Now let’s get started.

he holiday season is upon us. Department stores have taken down Halloween and have almost completely skipped over Thanksgiving to begin displaying Christmas decorations. If you haven’t already started thinking about your holiday gift giving, you could find yourself scrambling at the last minute – and that’s never good. Before you know it, you’re rushing “willy-nilly” through the aisles of the department store and grabbing up anything you can find without considering the cost. So, here are some tips to surviving the holidays without breaking the bank.

Set a budget
I know I say this all the time – budget, budget, budget. We’re not talking about your annual household budget here – just your holiday budget. Set aside your desire to get everyone on your list exactly what they ‘want’ and be honest with yourself about what you can responsibly afford. We’ll talk about creativity and bargain hunting later. Right now, be realistic about what money you have and what you can afford to spend without blowing your annual household budget. How do you do that? First consider your existing budget. How much do you normally spend on discretionary items like eating out, cable TV, or movies? Can you cut any of these temporarily to save for the holidays? In other words, “reallocate” some of your discretionary spending towards your holiday budget. When you’re calculating, don’t forget things like postage for Christmas cards, home decorations, and holiday party favors. Instead of spending excessively on each other this year, join with other family members to help those who may be less fortunate.
Make your list
Now that you have your budget in place, make a list of all the people you want to buy for. Don’t forget to plan for those little remembrance gifts for teachers, co-workers, etc. Then go over the list and decide how much you can spend on each. If you don’t have enough money to cover your holiday budget, consider cutting names or amounts. If you have a large family, consider drawing names with the adults and only buying for the person whose name you drew. Perhaps a group gift for husband and wife, or for a family – like a game for family game night. Once you’ve settled on a dollar amount for each person, that’s it. Focus on the amount you’ll spend, not what you’ll buy.
Shop, but don’t drop
There are lots of ways to be creative when saving on holiday gifts. Take the time to bargain-hunt and employ some of these suggestions; • Look for special “savings days” at your favorite retail stores. • Use coupons from your newspaper, online or in-store. • Scan group-buying sites like Groupon, Amazon Local, Chic Market, and others. • Take advantage of free shipping with online purchases. • Ask party guest to contribute a dish to your gathering. • Tap into your own creative skills with DIY presents. • Shop through cash-back reward sites to earn back a percentage of your purchase. • Give experiences rather than things. Consider the intangibles for gift giving. If you’re already baking cooking with your family, make an extra batch for a neighbor or a friend. Offer to baby-sit for a friend who has a lot on her plate. Take an elderly relative or friend for an outing. The cost is next to nothing, but the gift is priceless. Make your gift giving part of a theme. Come up with a theme for presents and then look for sales – game-night packages, movie-night motif. Going with a theme helps save money and creates fun. Be creative. Store bought gifts are great but homemade gifts are often more meaningful. Sites like this should give you a few ideas to start with.
Remember the reason for the season
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, keeping the holiday’s spiritual message front and center is a good antidote to the holiday gimmies. Instead of spending weekends leading up to Christmas in the mall, it would be a lot better gift to spend your time with your family. Remember that what you do for one day of the year is not as important as what you do for the other 364 days.

reparing for Medicare coverage as you approach retirement, especially ages 63-65, may not be the top priority for many. This period is often viewed as a time to celebrate leaving the workforce, potentially reduce healthcare expenses, and adapt to a new way of spending time. However, reaching 65 and becoming eligible for Medicare can be somewhat overwhelming due to the constant influx of offers and information. Your phone will ring incessantly with offers for Medicare assistance, and your mailbox will be inundated with letters, postcards, and flyers. So, why all the fuss? Well, Medicare can be a complex endeavor, and the decisions you make can have a long-lasting impact on your healthcare. One critical question is, “What will it cost?” For some, the answer is straightforward, but for others, especially those with higher incomes, careful planning is essential as it can significantly affect your monthly Medicare expenses. If you plan to continue working past age 65 and delay enrolling in Medicare, you’ll have to consider other factors like Part D and HSA accounts. Remaining on employer prescription drug coverage that isn’t creditable for Medicare can trigger a lifetime Part D penalty. Staying informed about these matters will help you avoid penalties and potential tax consequences when you eventually enroll in Medicare. I can help! the annual election period comes to an end on December 7, I thought I would speak about certain things that need to take place this month. If you took the opportunity to join a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan and exit a Medicare Supplement, you will need to be sure to cancel your Medicare Supplement. Medicare Supplements are not tied to the Medicare enrollment tracking system like MA plans and Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) are. When you change plans from a Medicare Supplement, they do not automatically cancel. If you changed from one MA plan to another MA plan, the 2023 plan will automatically cancel at the end of December and your new plan will begin January 1. The same is true for a PDP change. Medicare handles PDP and MA plan disenrollment and enrollments on the backend. If you have been using a mail order pharmacy and changed your prescription coverage through either a new PDP or MA plan, you will need to make arrangements with your new carrier’s mail order pharmacy. Each insurance company has a preferred mail order pharmacy that will give you the lowest co-pays among all the mail order services. Be sure to also take note of who your preferred retail pharmacies are in your plan. If you use a standard pharmacy or one that is not covered at all, your co-pays will be quite a bit higher than using a preferred pharmacy. This year has flown by. We are all probably looking forward to spending time with our loved ones enjoying food and good company. Here are some ways to stay healthy this holiday season. Before holiday trave starts, you should get your annual vaccination against influenza and the updated Covid-19 booster. There are already a lot of respiratory illnesses spreading in the schools, daycares, and community, so keeping up to date with vaccines can help to keep your family safe and oJt of the hospital. If you are traveling by plane, remember to continue to maintain appropriate distancing and wear masks, if appropriate. And continue to wash your and your children’s hands to prevent the spread of disease. Traveling and large family gatherings can cause a lot of stress for children and pets during the holidays when routines are disrupted. Be sure to maintain a consistent routine with bedtimes and nap times. Keep pets safely stowed or away from small children unless they are used to them. Especially when there is a lot of food out. Be sure that your smoke alarm and the carbon monoxide monitor have fresh batteries and are working properly as the temperatures start dropping. Safety first! When it comes to holiday meals and baked goods, we all have a lot of traditions. It is still important for everyone to eat healthy and well-balanced portions with a good variety of fruits and veggies, protein and grains. It is also important to still get exercise even during school breaks and vacations. Going on a walk or going on a bike ride together as a family when the weather is nice is a good way to get exercise and fresh air. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! ortgage interest rates are hovering at the highest levels in over 23 years, causing mortgage demand to sink to a 27-year low. Waiting for home prices to come down has had little success for homebuyers due to an unprecedented imbalance in housing supply. What can you and other homebuyers do to increase your buying power? One advantage to higher interest rates is that they can make you money in other investments until you’re ready to buy your home. Start with a debt consolidation loan to pay off high-interest credit cards. Do some research to learn where it’s best to park some cash in savings, the term of the investment(s), and penalties for early withdrawals, if applicable. High-yield savings accounts. Most savings accounts have variable annual percentage yields (APYs), which means the return is linked to Federal Reserve overnight funds rate changes. Currently, you can get yields between 4.00% and 5.00% APYs while a traditional savings account is .50% or less. Certificate of deposit (CD) accounts. The average 12-month CD is about 1.49%, still much higher than a typical savings account. But many online financial institutions are paying 4.5% to 5% APY, reports CBS. Corporate bonds. To raise capital, some corporations issue debt securities which means you’re loaning money to the company in return for regular income payments and the return of your initial capital when the bond reaches maturity. The benefits are lower risk for investment-grade corporate bonds, lower volatility, and greater diversification that’s not tied to the stock market.
