I
hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving holiday! Our office was able to have a couple of Patient Appreciation Days in October and November. We did a Food and Fund Drive for a local Food Pantry. It was a HUGE success! I was so grateful to see the generous contributions. Some brought in boxes of food to donate, and some gave cash. I dropped off the donations and it made me feel humble to be a part of something so wonderful.

It’s been a tough last couple of years for many and the challenges may still be there. I encourage you to get lost in serving others, especially throughout this holiday season. I’ve learned that as I help others with their challenges that I forget about the issues in my life. Take time to refocus. Take an inventory of your year. What went well? What didn’t? Are there some changes you can make? Any course corrections needed? Are you taking care of yourself as well? It’s easy to let ourselves go as we are busy taking care of those around us. Reach out to someone who could use a phone call or a visit. Who is coming to mind right now as you read this? Write their name(s) down. What do they need to help them feel joy this holiday season? Take some purposeful action as this year ends and identify how you can welcome in the new year. A quote attributed to Helen Keller says “Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” Call us at 303-993-6092 if we can help.

ith the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period ending on December 7, I thought I would give you a recap of all the different enrollment periods that you have as a Medicare beneficiary. First and foremost is your Initial Election Period (IEP). This is when you turn 65. It occurs the 3 months prior to your 65th birthday month, the month you turn 65 and the 3 months following your 65th birthday month (7 months total). You can enroll in Medicare Parts A and B during this time and avoid a penalty. You could also qualify for a Special Election Period (SEP). An SEP is given to you when you are covered through an employee group health plan and retire anytime after turning 65. You have 8 months to get on Medicare Part B but only 2 months to get a Part D drug plan to avoid penalties. Then there is the Annual Enrollment Period that occurs for everyone on Medicare October 15 - December 7 each year. During this time you can make changes to a Medicare Advantage Plan or Prescription Drug Plan. And finally is the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) which is January 1 March 31. A couple things happen during this timeframe. (1) For people 65+ who do not have a SEP, you can apply to add Medicare Part B. Part B would then start July 1 of that year. (2) Folks with a Medicare Advantage Plan in place on January 1 can make a one time plan change during this time frame. If you have any questions, please reach out. ʻTis the Season of Change and Celebration Offered by: Jan Hepp-Struck, Hepp Realty
H
ello December…it seems just yesterday we were saying Happy New Year and welcoming in 2021 (with a good strong kick in the keister to 2020) filled with hopes that Covid would soon be on the way out and life as we knew it might return to some semblance of “normal”. This decade of twenty twenties has certainly started out with a “bang” and challenged all of us to rethink “normal” and what it means both collectively and individually. In October I wrote about the winds of change and how the housing trends show that working from home continues to be a positive option for many industries, and that includes real estate. Over the past two years, our group has spent increasingly less time in our office space on 4th Avenue. After much introspection and discussion, combined with the opportunity to welcome a wonderful new business to the Brighton community, I have decided the time has come to lease the full building to Dulces Suenos Anesthesia, LLC (pain specialists), and I hope you will join us in welcoming them! As 2021 winds down, we are grateful beyond words for so many loyal clients and friends throughout the years, and though we may not be in the building, please know that we are still just a phone call, email, or text message away and will continue to specialize in providing extraordinary service to the Brighton community and surrounding areas in buying and selling residential and commercial real estate. In the meantime, like most everyone else, we are looking forward to celebrating with loved ones near and far, and we wish all of you happiness and joy, and the best the season has to offer! For proven expertise in establishing your home value and/or searching for a new or existing home, please call Jan at (303) 520-4340.

What are your financial resolutions for 2022? Offered by: Tim Roberts - Edward Jones
As
you know, 2021 was full of challenges. We were still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic when supply chains shut down and inflation heated up. So, if you’re like many people, you might not be sorry to see the year come to a close. But now it’s time to look ahead to a brighter 2022. And on a personal level, you may want to set some New Year’s resolutions. You might resolve to improve your health and diet, and possibly learn some new skills, but why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few ideas to consider: Tim Roberts, CRPC® 129 S 4th Avenue Brighton, CO 80601-1000 303-659-2301

· Prepare for the unexpected. If you haven’t already created an emergency fund, now may be a good time to start. Ideally, you’d like to have three to six months’ worth of living expenses in this fund, with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid account. (If you’re retired, you may want your emergency fund to contain up to a year’s worth of living expenses.) Once you’ve got this fund established, you may be able to avoid dipping into long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as costly home or auto repairs or large medical bills. · Boost your retirement savings. The pandemic caused many us to reevaluate our ability to eventually enjoy the retirement lifestyles we’ve envisioned. In fact, 33% of those planning to retire soon said they started to contribute even more to their retirement savings during the pandemic, according to a study from Age Wave and Edward Jones. This year, if you can afford it, increase your contributions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. · Reduce your debt load. The less debt you carry, the more money you’ll have available to support your lifestyle today and save and invest for tomorrow. So, this year, resolve to cut down on your existing debts and avoid taking on new ones whenever possible. You can motivate yourself by measuring your progress – at the beginning of 2022, record your total debts and then compare this figure to your debt load at the start of 2023. If the numbers have dropped, you’ll know you were making the right moves. · Don’t overreact to the headlines. A lot can happen during a year. Consider inflation – it shot up in 2021, but it may well subside in 2022. If you changed your investment strategy last year to accommodate the rise in inflation, would you then have to modify it again when prices fall? And inflation is just one event. What about changes in interest rates? How about new legislation coming out of Washington? And don’t forget extreme weather events, such as wildfires and floods. Any or all of these occurrences can affect the financial markets in the short term, but it just doesn’t make sense for you to keep changing the way you invest in response to the news of the day. Instead, stick with a strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You may need to adjust this strategy over time, in response to changes in your own life, but don’t let your decisions be dictated by external events. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop positive habits that can help you face the future with confidence. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, Member SIPC

Diamonds for Diabetes Winter Fundraiser Offered by: Thollot & Co. Jewelers
T
his marks the tenth year for the Diamonds for Diabetes winter fundraiser presented by Thollot & Co. Jewelers. Things kicked off with the Annual Gala at their Thornton jewelry showroom on November 20th. The evening gave attendees first access to the Wish Upon a Tree ornaments, each with a prize potentially worth thousands of dollars. Thollot & Co. will again furnish over $20,000 in jewelry and gems for prizes. Your $25 donation entitles you to a pick from a tree of special ornament boxes. Every ornament has a natural gemstone or other assorted jewelry inside; some of the prizes would be at home among many enviable jewelry collections. The ornaments were again a popular part of the night and a new record for first night donations was set. The Wish Upon a Tree ornaments will continue to be available in the store until December 31st. During the announcement of a limited number of opportunities to participate in a Pour Your Heart Into It jewelry casting experience, a guest quickly helped get things rolling with a $250 donation and cast the first one of the limited edition poker chips, during the gala! A limited number of opportunities still exist where your $250 donation gives you the experience of hands-on jewelry casting, led by one of Thollot & Co.’s master jewelers. Not only will you hold the torch, directing the curls of the flame expertly over the molten silver, you’ll feel the exhilarating satisfaction of dropping the red hot casting into the cooling bath with a crisp hiss of steam as it’s quenched. When you’re done, you’ll receive your own 1oz. solid sterling silver commemorative poker chip crafted with your own labor and finished with the expert hands of Thollot & Co. jewelers! Recognizing that November is national diabetes awareness month, Thollot & Co. created a special pair of droplet shaped red garnet earrings set in 14k white gold. It’s a perfect gift set with special meaning to those affected by diabetes. They are limited edition and are available with your $250 donation, while they last. Troy and Joy Thollot, Owners of Thollot & Co. created Diamonds for Diabetes after two of their three daughters were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and they were able to see firsthand the challenges families face with the disease. Each year the Diamonds for Diabetes fundraising effort raises tens of thousands of dollars to benefit the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. Your donation supports their innovative research, outstanding patient care, as well as important education and support programs to help those living with diabetes.

here’s a well known saying that “If you see a turtle sitting on top of a fence post, you know it got some help getting there.” I was recently reminded of this fact some days ago while having dinner with a good friend. I met Miguel back in the early or mid 1990’s while I was still a young competitor in my early 20’s. He was a referee at Karate tournaments and owned three Karate schools in the Colorado Springs area. Being both of us of Hispanic heritage, we became quick friends. Miguel is a wonderfully outgoing and attentive gentleman, always ready to lend a hand. So when I mentioned my intention to open my own Karate school back in 2005, he immediately inundated me with books, articles, and documents on the subject. Any time we’d meet at a Karate event he would march toward me, huge smile on his face, ready to share what he learned at the latest business seminar he just attended. My Sensei in Peru taught me Karate, but having a business mentor was instrumental to the success of my Karate school, Colorado Karate Club. My friend Miguel took me under his wing from the start, sharing his knowledge, giving advice, and inspiring me to follow in his footsteps. At our latest meeting over dinner in the Springs, I stopped, and said, “I hope you know how thankful I am for all the help you have given me over the years. I truly appreciate it.” He looked at me as if he had no idea what I was talking about. But quickly recovered and said, “yes my brother, it is always a pleasure.” You see, I don’t think he thought he was doing anything special by helping me (and others.) That is just who he is, and I have been fortunate to cross his path. If you have something to share, know that there are many out there, ready and willing to learn. Like with Miguel, your experience and knowledge may be invaluable to someone out there. To me, my friend gave me (and still gives me) much more than knowledge, his friendship and mentorship is something I will always cherish and appreciate. That is why, anytime I feel like I have accomplished something of value, I know that I am that turtle on the fence post, and hope that I will always recognize it and show gratitude for the contributions so many have made in my life. (Sensei Miguel Serrano is a 7th Degree Black Belt, Founder and Chief Instructor at the United States Karate Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.)

Wayne’s Electric – Serving the Brighton Area For 47 years Offered by: Wayne’s Electric, Inc.
In
those early days, Wayne’s focus was primarily on residential service and light commercial work. The company continued to grow steadily and overcame the economic challenges of the time. In the early 1980’s, WEI moved into the oil and gas industry arena working on several of the local refineries for (at the time) Amoco Oil. This work helped to sustain the company while many other small contractors were experiencing slow downs, or closing their doors. In the middle/late 80’s, WEI became the electrical contractor of choice for one of the largest grocery retailers in Colorado. Store maintenance and remodels became a big part of WEI’s work picture and opened the door for further growth. Wayne’s Electric was soon known as the premier contractor for grocery and retail store electrical construction and retrofit. Over the last 47 years, Wayne’s Electric crews have been involved in many different types of electrical construction. From the smallest residential service calls to the largest of the retail big-box stores, Wayne’s Electric is there to meet the needs of your projects. A short list of the types of projects Wayne’s Electric has participated on: Retail Stores, health care facilities/hospitals, aviation facilities, schools, concert and entertainment venues, military facilities, renewable energy installations, and oil/ gas production. Wayne’s Electric has also recently expanded their residential department, and is excited to bring Sam Smith (formerly the owner of Divine Lighting and Electric) on board to serve the needs of local residents. Wayne’s Electric, Inc. is licensed in many states

ou might be asking, “What is the best type of estate plan?” A Will or a Living Trust? The most appropriate answer is “it depends”. There are four typical types of estate plans. The first is the government’s plan. If you don’t plan, the government has a default plan for you. The state determines who receives your property, who will be your executor, and the court process that your heirs will go through upon disability and death. The second type of estate plan is a plan that uses beneficiary designations to transfer assets following your death. Putting beneficiary designations on your assets will direct those assets to your heirs after death. Unfortunately, some assets do not allow for beneficiary designations. Keep in mind, your beneficiary designations override any instructions you leave in a Will or Living Trust, and don’t help upon disability. The third type of estate plan is a plan that is designed to use the probate process. These plans use a Will to provide the instructions for the division of property. Many plans unintentionally end up in the probate process, but some are designed to use the probate process to establish protections for minor or disabled beneficiaries. The fourth type of estate plan is a properly implemented Living Trust plan. This type of plan is designed to avoid the probate process and allow your estate to be administered in a private manner without court involvement. It is often also used to provide protections for a surviving spouse, children, or other heirs after your death. You should consider when, how, and what you want to leave your heirs; the time, effort, and resources you are willing to devote to your plan during your life, and the benefits and shortcomings of each type of plan. Then, with the advice of a quality estate planning attorney, you can choose which of the four types of plans will work best for you. If you would like to learn more about your estate planning options, visit www. EstatePlansThatWork.com to sign up for a complimentary educational workshop.

Our Christmas Memory Offered by: UE Legacy Beef
O
ne of my favorite memories is when my dad brought Miss Lynda and me a quarter of beef for Christmas. We were just a young couple getting started. It was late in the fall (about this time of year.) We needed the meat. He brought a hind quarter un-cut to our trailer house where we were living in Lamar, Colorado. We cut the quarter with a hand saw and a couple of knives he brought along and we wrapped it on the kitchen table of our trailer. What a blessing. That helped us get through that winter!!! Another great memory is how good and tender that UE beef was!! You know, it’s not too early to get ready for Christmas. Who do you know that could use a quarter or half of beef this year?? Maybe even you. It’s ok to give yourself a gift. Check us out at uelegacybeef.com.

COVID-19 vaccination (ages 5-11) Offered by: Premier Pediatrics Joseph Smith M.D.
Premier Pediatrics has started COVID-19 vaccination clinics for children
ages 5-11. Here are some observations about COVID-19 and vaccination in children in this age group: • Over 1.9 million children ages 5-11 have been infected with COVID-19 resulting in over 8,300 hospitalizations • Of these, nearly 2400 children have had the most serious complication of COVID-19, Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), resulting in nearly 100 deaths in this age group • MIS-C can occur even after mild, initial COVID-19 infection • MIS-C is seen most frequently in the 5-11-year age group (with the 0-4-year age group being second) • Vaccination in the 5-11-year age group can prevent greater than 90% of cases of MIS-C • Myocarditis is rare after vaccination, is mild, and individuals recover from this (no myocarditis was seen in the 5-11-year age study group) Top: Ellen McCormick, M.D. | Michele Tuepker, M.D. | Debra Campbell, D.O. | Janine Lechleitner, CPNP Bottom: Jamie Campbell, M.D. | Joseph Smith, M.D. | Caroline Albert-Martin, M.D.

• Myocarditis after COVID-19 infection or MIS-C is much more frequent, severe, and long-lasting • With over 7 billion doses of vaccine given, the COVID-19 vaccines are no longer considered a “new” vaccine • The number one concern that parents have about the vaccine is potential “long-term effects” from the vaccine. NOTE: No vaccine in the history of all vaccines has ever had long-term effects that have been substantiated (all vaccine negative effects happen within the first couple of weeks, usually are brief, and resolve completely – COVID-19 vaccines are not expected to be any different) For questions about COVID-19 vaccination or to schedule a vaccination for your child age 5-11, please call now!

Have a Safe and Healthy Holiday Season Offered by: Rachael Janoso, M.D.- Brighton Pediatrics, P.C.
T
he holidays are approaching fast. That means that we are all looking forward to delicious home cooked meals and special holiday traditions. For some families, that also means traveling to visit loved ones or perhaps even having them come over. When there are new and even familiar faces coming into the home, they can bring with them bags full of goodies and treats. Often, they also bring with them pill bottles, special lotions or creams, and other medicines. Often, these can look very much like candy to a small child or infant, who explore their environment by putting everything into their mouth. Blood pressure and diabetes medicines, and even herbal supplements can be very dangerous when ingested by a curious child. Accidental ingestions and poisonings are common and are preventable. If you suspect that your child has ingested something, contact your local Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222 right away and if directed to do so, proceed directly to the Emergency Department. Having this number close at hand is one way you can keep your family safe during the holidays. Another way to stay healthy during the holidays is to maintain the normal routines and schedules. It is easy for bedtimes and normal routines to become disrupted when there are people visiting over the holidays. With all of the candy and treats, it is still important to make sure everyone brushes their teeth and flosses to keep the cavities away. With the treats and rich food, keep the whole family active by going on a walk or a nice bike ride if the weather is nice. Even dancing and jumping around is a great form of exercise, as long as you go long enough to work up a nice sweat. This will help keep away the holiday weight gain. Lastly, if you or your family is feeling under the weather with a cough, fever, vomiting, or any sick symptoms, or if you were exposed to covid, please consider staying home to prevent the spread of infection.

If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Start a game today and make it a part of your daily brain workout! The goal of Sudoku is to fi ll in a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. Sound Quality Matters Offered by: John Wilson, B.S., BC-HIS - Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center
As
a parent who understands the way that sounds and music strengthen the auditory pathways in the brain, I have done everything possible to make sure my children have the opportunity to take music lessons and practice regularly. The physical and neurological connections that are made in the brain and body while listening to and performing music can last a lifetime. Musicians develop an ability to separate sounds made by different notes and different instruments which leads to a much stronger auditory system. With all four of my children having taken lessons, for the past decade this time of year has been a time of piano recitals. After working hard to learn their songs, my children and the other students display their mastery of their musical pieces by performing for other students and their friends and family members. We typically gather in an auditorium or church and some perform basic songs with sheet music in front of them, while others perform complex classics from memory. Last year was different however, as the lessons and recital were conducted over the internet using video due to COVID-19. Each student who performed in the recital had a camera film them as they played and the video and audio were transmitted over the internet to all those who wanted to watch and listen. The music was beautiful and it was encouraging to see so many people working on their talents. However, due to the inferior quality of the microphones recording the music, the varied connection and transmission quality of the signal, and the lowquality speakers found on computers and mobile devices, the quality of the sound was less than it would have been in person.
By contrast, last week we were in an auditorium with a grand piano. The quality of the live music was clear, crisp and vibrant. There was no problem with a faulty microphone picking up the sound, poor transmission quality of the video, or poor output from a small computer speaker. The music could be both heard and felt. This experience reminded me of what so many people have said about wearing hearing aids: Nothing sounds as good as normal hearing. However, the quality of hearing aids makes a significant difference. The quality of microphones, receivers (speakers), processors, and technology found in the hearing aid, along with the fit of the devices, all make a significant difference as to the quality and clarity of sound the listener experiences. For this reason, we now offer the EVOLV AI family of hearing aids, the latest, most advanced technology to help our patients hear and understand speech, and deal with background noise. So, if you or someone you know is struggling to hear and understand during this holiday season, please call us to find out how we can help with hearing loss and tinnitus! Merry Christmas from Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center.

The holidays are near and that means homemade meals. But what do you do with your used cooking oil? Disposing it down the drain or toilet can coat sewers and cause “slow drains,” blockages, back-ups and even expose you to the pathogens in raw sewage. Turns out, cooking oil can be made into fuel and you can help make that happen. The City of Brighton’s Utilities Department is working with RecycOil to keep used cooking oils and greases out of sewers and landfills by diverting them into biodiesel production to be sold back as clean, renewable fuel. To recycle your oil, make an appointment by calling 303-655-2093 to drop-off your used cooking oil at the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 325 N. Kuner Rd. It’s important to also be mindful of the container to store your used cooking oil. The City is giving away free fat trappers and replacement bags to properly catch cooking oil and grease. To get free fat trappers and replacement bags, call 303-655-2093.

Slowing Sales Create Opportunity Offered by: Scott and Lora Nordby, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Innovative Real Estate

fter an astonishing 114 consecutive months of year-over-year home price gains, existing home sales eased two percent on a seasonally adjusted annual rate between July and August 2021. Have rising home prices finally become too much for homebuyers? Not yet. The median existing-home sales price rose 15% year-over-year, according to The National Association of REALTORS (NAR), largely due to a continuing dearth of available homes for sale. Existing supplies nationwide are at a meager 2.6 months on hand, which means that at the current sales pace, supplies would end quickly.
Let us help you reach your 2022 goals
Most impacted by slim inventories and rising prices are first-time buyers who accounted for 29% of sales in August, down from 30% in July and down from 33% a year ago in August 2020. So, what does this mean for you – the homebuyer who may feel discouraged?

Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, said that “potential buyers are out and about searching, but much more measured about their financial limits, and simply waiting for more inventory.” With winter approaching, housing sales tend to slow, especially with holidays pending. This affords buyers more opportunity to purchase a home “in the off season.” In addition, when buyers are pushed to their limits, they begin to withdraw from the hunt, leaving sellers with fewer showing and offers. Stay firm. Don’t “offer over list price” or try to compete with all-cash offers from corporate buyers. Eventually, prices will come down, and nearrecord-low interest rates will continue to be available for some time to come. If you are thinking of selling your current home and buying your next home or are just curious about the current market value is, our premiere home valuation site is a great starting point. HOMES FOR THE Holidays Once upon a time, real estate was thought to slow down as the new year approached, giving way to hot cocoa and flurries of snow. These days, we know better, and when winter comes around, it’s also the time to buy or sell your house. So, grab your mug, sit down by a fire and find out why now is the season of homes for the holidays: Twinkling with holiday lights, your house will shine bright to eager buyers looking for their perfect home. Temperature isn’t the only thing dropping this winter; mortgage rates are near historic lows. Homes are new beginnings for buyers and sellers to start the new year off fresh in their new home. Serious buyers are out. Your home won’t be subject to casual window shoppers. Buyers have extra time off from work, which means more hours in their day to search for a home.
